Benidorm Beaches and coves

Problably the best urban beaches of the world

Fine golden sand, transparent waters and beaches  that are clean and cared for throughout the year are  a trademark of the Benidorm seafront.  At its north end, two small coves of sand and rock are very  suitable for diving  and for those who like to swim alone,  Tio Ximo  cove and  Almadrava Cove .

Further on, starts the bustling  promenade of the popular and busy  Levante beach  which in addition to its  many facilities on offer  also has the added attraction of being lively throughout the year.

South of the port, the magnificent  Poniente beach ,  competes in beauty and facilities and both have in common that they have a south facing orientation, so  in winter the sun shines all day until sunset and in summer until after eight.  Between them, in the old town area and below the shelter of the  Canfali hill is the small cove of  Mal Pas Beach  and opposite, the Benidorm island, a paradise for  scuba divers.

Sustainability

Sustainability

Between Mountains and Sea

Benidorm stands out for its exceptional natural environment, with the Serra Gelada Natural Park and the impressive Bernia and Puig Campana mountain ranges, as well as its 7km of coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. Its compact urban model promotes sustainability by reducing pollution through proximity, which decreases the need for travel in private vehicles, achieving a reduction below 20% of the total daily trips. Benidorm's urban structure, characterized by high-rise buildings and high density, allows for the accommodation of a large number of tourists and residents in a small space, thus minimizing the impact on the territory and promoting pedestrian mobility. Each building in Benidorm, except those in specific areas such as the Old Town and public or private green spaces, has designated open areas for gardens, swimming pools, and sports courts, in accordance with urban planning regulations. The city has prioritized energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energies through a focus on verticality to maximize ventilation, lighting, and solar exposure, resulting in minimal electrical consumption for lighting due to the predominant orientation of the buildings towards the south

Benidorm is the leading tourist destination in the Mediterranean. The Visit Benidorm Foundation is responsible for the management and tourist promotion of Benidorm. We know every corner of Benidorm and we are here to guide you through its wonders. From its stunning beaches to its bustling city center, or its cultural and natural assets, we invite you to rediscover the authentic essence of this Mediterranean gem.

There are so many things to do on a holiday to Benidorm, it's difficult to know where to start. The resort's long, sandy beach is home to an array of water sports - including paragliding, jet skiing, windsurfing and plenty of boat trips. Many Benidorm’s hotels have onsite sports courts and the Costa Blanca offers a choice of 15 golf courses. In summer, Aqualandia water park boasts a dizzying choice of flumes and slides, whilst Terra Mitica has white knuckle rides galore. Your Ultimate Guide to Navigating Benidorm Supermarkets

' src=

Introduction

Embarking on a vacation, whether in a hotel or a charming apartment , is a delightful journey filled with exploration and relaxation. Amidst the thrill of discovering new surroundings and immersing oneself in local culture, arises a practical need that adds a unique dimension to the travel experience – the local supermarket. Far beyond being a mere necessity, the local supermarket becomes a crucial ally for holidaymakers, offering a wealth of experiences and opportunities that enhance the overall enjoyment of the trip. In this guide, we will explore why savvy travellers opt to embrace the local supermarket, unravelling the myriad benefits it brings to those seeking a more authentic, convenient, and personalised holiday experience.

Benidorm municipal market

Mercadona Supermarket in Benidorm

Mercadona Supermarket stands as one of the largest and most popular supermarket chains in Benidorm , boasting four conveniently located stores that cater to the needs of both locals and tourists. Multiple locations ensure that visitors don’t have to venture far to fulfil their grocery needs.

Two of these supermarkets are in the Old Town at;

  • Calle de Mercat
  • Calle Invierno s/n

Calle de Mercado is the most convenient being the the centre of the Old Town with a local market upstairs with amazing butchers, veg and bakers to add to your selection.  This supermarket has extensive fishmongers for everything you could want from prawns, and squid to salt cod you can even buy a ready-selected paella seafood selection.  I did buy one of these once and instead of making paella just cooked all the different clams, squid and seafood separately and ate the lot. I must add the cured ham counter is just the most incredible place to visit.

Fruit and veg in Spain will not disappoint and I often wonder what were are actually being fed in the UK as it tastes nothing like, last time we had an apartment for breakfast I was just eating fresh tomatoes on toast and never got bored.

With the other two being located at;

  • Av. Comunidad Europea
  • Carrer del Secretario Juan Antonio Baldovi

Consum Supermarket Benidorm

Consum is a popular local Spanish retail chain in Benidorm, known for its wide variety of goods and customer-friendly services.

Consum supermarket offers a vast assortment of goods, ranging from fresh local produce to fresh meats ( I personally like their fresh meat selection), seafood, a range of prepacked and frozen foodstuff, fresh fruits and vegetables, bread baked in-store daily, tinned, bottled and dry goods, fruit juices, soft drinks, beers, wines and spirits. The store also stocks household goods, cleaning products, pet food, and beauty products and offers a selection of lactose and gluten-free products. The supermarket chain has four outlets in Benidorm, all operating from 09:00 am to 9:30 pm Monday to Saturday, with extended hours during the summer.

Language Assistance

For non-Spanish speakers, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with key Spanish words related to your shopping list using tools like Google Translate before visiting a Spanish-run store. However, due to the high influx of English-speaking tourists in Benidorm, many Mercadona store staff make an effort to understand and assist non-Spanish speakers. While there may be a bit more difficulty at Consum, in reality, communication barriers have rarely been an issue for those with limited Spanish proficiency.

Store Facilities

All Mercadona and Consum stores are equipped with air conditioning for a comfortable shopping experience. Larger locations often provide free parking for added convenience. The stores prioritize accessibility, offering wheelchair access, a plentiful supply of shopping trolleys, smaller wheeled carts for all customers, and lockers for bags.

Product Range

Mercadona and Consum stores boast well-stocked shelves with a diverse array of canned, bottled, and dry goods, catering to a wide range of culinary preferences. Refrigeration units and freezers within the stores offer an extensive selection of prepackaged food items, along with a variety of both non-alcoholic and alcoholic cold beverages to suit different tastes. I tend to buy a 5L water and wine on my first day for the room.

Dietary Options

In response to evolving dietary preferences, Mercadona and Consum also offer a selection of vegetarian options and ready meals. Their product range includes items that cater to specific dietary requirements, such as lactose-free and gluten-free products, ensuring that customers with dietary restrictions can find suitable options at the store.

With a focus on customer convenience, a diverse product range, and efforts to accommodate different dietary needs, Mercadona and Consum Supermarkets emerge as go-to destinations for grocery shopping in Benidorm, catering to the diverse needs of both local residents and the city’s many visitors.

When you have sunned yourself on Benidorm’s sunny beaches of Playa Poniente and Playa Levante, gone to all Benidorm’s night clubs and discos , visited Benidorm’s four theme parks of Terra Mitica, Terra Natura, Aqualandia and Mundomar as well as enjoyed dinner and a show at the Benidorm Palace , wined and dined on the promenades then now it is time to do some shopping.

La Marina Shopping Mall Benidorm

Benidorm has a commercial area in Finestrat with a shopping mall called La Marina. You can’t miss it. It is just off the N332 and can be seen from the motorway. There is a massive Carrefour, Lidl and McDonalds across the road with ample free parking.

The mall itself has all the typical Spanish & European major retailers such as Mango, Zara, Casa, Ale Hop, Douglas, Druni, C&A, Gerry Weber, Guess, Häagen Dazs, Jack & Jones, Massimo Dutti, Orange, Paco Martínez and H&M.

There is also a good food court including Burger King and cinema.

Centro Comercial La Marina Atención de Gerencia Avenida del País Valencià 2 03509 Finestrat (Alicante)

Shops in Benidorm Old Town

Some of the most popular shops in Benidorm can be found in the Avenida Martinez Alejos in the pedestrianised Old Town district. More shops can be found along the Passaig de la Carretera where there are many shop selling leather goods around the Plaza Mayor. You can get some great shoes and handbags at great prices to take home with you.

Benidorm’s Levante and Rincon de Loix districts are home to Benidorm’s top fashion boutiques with supermarkets, gifts and souvenir shops.

The Chinese bazaars offer the best value for money. The prices are very cheap. In these you can buy all sorts of goods such as sunglasses, beach towels, suncream, swimming trunks and ladies swimsuits and bikinis at rock-bottom prices.

Benidorm also has the markets that are typical to the Costa Blanca being on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Near the Hotel Pueblo is right in the centre of the town, neighbouring Altea’s markets attracts shoppers from further afield and is held on Tuesdays. The markets usually offer local produce, of fruit and vegetables, clothes, shoes, art, carpets, handicrafts, antiques and much much more, definitely a worth-while shopping experience.

El Cisne is the well known flea market held every Sunday and once every month on a Saturday as well. Featuring bric a brac and collector’s items, true bargains can be made.

If jewellery is what you after there are a large variety of jewellery stores in Benidorm selling 14kt gold at reasonable prices many set in precious stones giving it that Spanish style making it some memorable pieces to take home.

Typically of the Mediterranean countries Spain also has its fair share of leather shops selling bags, shoes, belts, jackets and purses. Leather in Spanish is piel so keep a lookout for the trademark.

The most popular leather stores scattered around the streets of Benidorm can be found around the Passeig de la Carretera, the Avenida del Mediterraneo and the main promenade near the Rincon de Loix.

Of course there many Chinese bazaar and other little Spanish shops selling some fairly good quality eye catching clothes for very little money. Also if you have children make sure to make a flamenco dress and matching shoes a treat to take home not to mention the typical tourist shops selling post cards, sun screen, swimming costumes, sombreros, etc.

Indoor Market Benidorm

The Benidorm Indoor Market is located on the Calle Girona in the Rincon de Loix district of Benidorm and has three entrances all of which are wheel chair and scooter accessible. The Indoor Market is open from eight in the morning until six in the evening from Monday to Friday and from eight until three on Saturday. The Indoor Market is closed on Sundays.

The Benidorm Indoor Market is very popular with tourists and is busy all year round. Interestingly the majority of the vendors are British selling British goods and services.

There is a variety of shops and services in the market which includes the Picnic Park good for sandwiches, Sheila’s Money Exchange, Super Drogueria for wines and spirits, Hepburn’s Hair and Nail Salon, Dream Feet Foot Spa, Andy’s Mobile Phone Shop, Salvador the Butcher, Browse Awhile Bookstore, Just Denise Curtains, Jenny’s Fashion Benidorm, Cafeteria and Bar Jose.

Sheila’s is a good place to exchange money. You do need to bring your passport if you wish to exchange currency and on subsequent visits you can just bring the ticket from your prior exchange. There are no commission charges and offer some of the best rates in town. Needless to say there is always a queue.

The Benidorm Indoor Market is the place to shop for accessories and costume jewellery starting at €1.60 and good quality leather handbags, shoes and belts starting from as little as €30.

Opening Hours

Shopping hours in Benidorm are from 10am in the morning until 2pm in the afternoon. Shops close during the hot summer hours siesta time and open again between four and five in the afternoon until eight in the evening.

The big supermarkets such as the Mercadonna, Carrefour Benidorm, and Masymas usually open their doors at nine in the morning until nine in the evening. These shops are also good places to keep a look out for discount vouchers to Benidorm’s theme parks.

However these supermarkets are often closed on Sundays (except July and August) but smaller mini-markets will be open.

Supermarkets in Benidorm

We are often being asked:

Where are the best supermarkets in Benidorm? Do you have a map of supermarkets in Benidorm? Where can I buy British food products in Benidorm?

If you are coming on holiday to Benidorm and you are renting a self-catering apartment then you no doubt will want to know where the nearest supermarkets and shops are.

Hypermarket Carrefour Planet Benidorm Finistrat

We believe the French owned Carrefour to be the best supermarket to visit as it is the biggest in Benidorm and prices are low.

It is best to get on the bus to the shopping centre of La Marina in Finistrat where you will find the huge Carrefour supermarket which has many British and English foods if you can’t do without your familiar brands.

Here you can do a big shop and stock up for your week in Benidorm. Take some bags as plastic bags at the checkout are charged for.

Carrefour Address:

Ctra. Nueva de Finestrat a La Cala, km. 5

03509 Finestrat (ver mapa)

Telephone:  902 20 20 00

Opening Hours:

Monday to Saturday: 09:00 to 24:00

If you are in the Rincon de Loix part of Benidorm (where the Benidorm Palace is located) which is just outside of the popular Levante area you can go to the Carrefour Express on Avenida Mediterraneo. The prices are the same as the main Carrefour at La Marina and the opening hours are 9am until 11pm Monday to Friday.

You can also get beer, spirits and cigarettes at prices much cheaper than in the UK.

For tobacco look out for the yellow and brown sign saying “Tabacos” – they are official shops as licensed by the Spanish government and prices will be controlled. Cigarettes will be much cheaper here in cartons in comparison to buying individual packs fom vending machines in the bars and clubs.

Here are some sample prices:

  • Mayfair  200  €40.00
  • Marlboro 200  €45.00
  • Lambert & Butler 200 €43.50
  • JPS 200 €39.50
  • Old Holborn 10 x 50g €67.50
  • Golden Virginia 10 x 50g €67.50
  • Silk Cut 200 €45.00
  • Benson & Hedges 200 €45.00

In these tabacos, you can also buy stamps and post letters which is much easier than finding a Post Office which will frequently have long queues.

Iceland in Benidorm

The popular frozen-food chain Iceland now has a branch in Benidorm.

The Iceland store (opposite La Marina mall) sells exactly the same food products you would get back in the Iceland store in the United Kingdom, for just a small amount more in Euros.

To get there follow the signs for Carrefour, Iceland is on the same roundabout as the entrance to Carrefour

Avenida Federico Garcia Lorca, 20 – 22 03509 Finestrat Alicante Telephone 965 854 335 Email [email protected]

Monday to Saturday 9am to 8pm, closed Sundays.

Benidorm Shopping Page Summary – Visitors to Benidorm can enjoy a great variety of shopping from the markets, the cheap Chinese bazaars to the designer shops at the La Marina Mall in Benidorm. The Carrefour supermarket in Benidorm is a huge hypermarket with many types of food from Spanish to English (British).

Staying in Gemelos 22 Apartments.

Was wondering where is the best supermarket to get essentials when we arrive, We won't be arriving in resort till after 10pm so was hoping there will be a cheap supermarket or shop that's open late to pick up bread, milk, juice & some beers etc...

' class=

Almost opposite your apartments, on the main road, is a small, but well-stocked, minimarket which, I believe, is 24 hour.

' class=

One further up on same side as Union Jack will be open for basic stuff

Hi Marie the Carrefour Express on the Av Mediterraneo (15 min Walk) is open till 2300 they will have everything you could need ;o)

There is a supermarket on the prom, two units to the right of heartbreak bar which is open till 2 o'clock in the morning 365 days a year. Well stocked and reasonable prices.

Forgot about that one ,yes that is the newish "Open Cor" supermarket owned by the El Corte Inglés chain, there is one on the front at La Cala as well

As one would expect bit pricier than most :o) Ben

Holiday expert explains how Spain's new £97 daily charge will affect your holiday

Holiday expert explains how Spain's new £97 daily charge will affect your holiday

All has been explained on the new tourist rule that was introduced in spain.

Joshua Nair

Joshua Nair

As the weather gets warmer, a lot of us are beginning to get onto those flight and hotel websites to book a summer getaway, with many often favouring Spain as a nearby holiday location with amazing weather.

It is well documented that the European country is a popular holiday hotspot for Brits , so you can imagine that it was a shock when people found out about the new money law put in place there for tourists.

Spain is a popular choice among Brits for summer getaways. (Getty Stock Photo)

The new law states that Britons must be able to show proof that they have at least €113.40 (£97) per person, per day, during their stay in the country.

It's fair to say that the news hasn't been received well, with many threatening not to go back to the holiday destination following the implemented law.

Chelsea, an expert from cheapholidayexpert.com has explained all the ins and outs of the law, such as what we can do to prepare, how serious it is, and what to do if we don't have the required funds.

How new is this rule?

Well, it turns out that this rule is not new at all, as it has been in effect since 1 January 2022, though back then it was at £85 a day per person, being increased to £93 per day in 2023.

So, there's no reason to be scared, it has been quite standard and in place for a while, though it is under a spotlight now that we're past the COVID years.

Should we blame Brexit?

In short, yes.

As the UK left the EU , Brits don't have the freedom of moving throughout the continent anymore, and have to go through closer, more thorough checks.

This can be anything, such as:

  • Showing you have enough money for your stay
  • Showing proof of accommodation for your stay
  • Showing a return or onward ticket

But this could happen in any EU country, not just being limited to Spain - and with that being said, these rules aren't exclusive to the UK either, instead applying to all third party countries as a standard rule.

It's important that you're ready to show proof of funds upon arrival. (Getty Stock Photo)

How will it affect my holiday?

The Spanish ministry states that: "Foreigners must prove, if required to do so," about proof of funds, meaning that it isn't compulsory for them to check every tourist's bank statement upon arrival.

Think of it as a random spot check, you may get picked, or you may not.

Has this actually happened to anyone?

Chelsea posted on her Instagram once the news broke, asking people who has travelled to Spain since the start of 2022 to share if they were asked about money.

Only four of the 1373 people asked said that they had, and provided stories about what had happened.

All of them went through the checks in 2022, and only one had to show proof of accommodation, a return flight, and just flashed their credit card to the officer, who seemed unbothered to see a bank statement or account balance.

The others got away with flashing their credit cards, with no real thorough checks taking place according to them.

But with that being said, they may begin to stop more people as the number of tourists into the country increases.

How should I prepare?

No matter how slim the chance, it's key to have the following at hand:

  • Confirmation of your return flight or onwards travel
  • Confirmation of your booked accommodation and the address of where you’re staying

Screenshots will do, though PDFs and official confirmations will probably look better.

Brits will have to prepare for spot checks when entering EU countries from now on. (Getty Stock Photo)

How do I prepare to prove that I have enough money?

First and foremost, you have to work out if you have £97 per day, with people in families or groups having to do more maths to make this work.

Showing bank cards might be the key, so make sure they're easily accessible, though it sounds like officers are looking for verbal confirmation so far from tourists, according to Chelsea.

The Spanish Ministry of Interior also states you can prove it: "...in cash, or by presenting certified checks, traveler's checks, letters of payment, or credit cards, which must be accompanied by a bank account statement or an up-to-date bank book (letters from banks or Internet bank statements will not be accepted) or any other means with which the amount available as credit of said card or Bank account."

What if I don't have enough?

There are no known cases of this yet, but the official ruling from the Spanish government states: "In the event that, when carrying out the entry control of people in Spanish territory, it is verified that a foreigner lacks sufficient economic resources for the time he wishes to remain in Spain and to continue his trip to the country of destination or to return to the country of origin, or do not have the registered, non-transferrable and closed ticket or tickets, in the means of transport they intend to use, their entry into Spanish territory will be denied as established by regulation."

It does also state that in exceptional circumstances, you could still get let in, but the length of your stay may be reduced.

Bottom line: Come prepared!

This is how it's going to be from now on.
