The Best Private Boat Tour in El Nido, Palawan

Private boat tour in el nido

Home > Philippines

Booking a private boat tour in El Nido is the ultimate way to go if you want to experience Palawan in the Philippines without the hoards of tourists. So if exploring limestone islands, lying on an empty sandy beach, snorkelling among neon-coloured fish and colorful reefs is your idea of fun, then this is the post for you! Doing a private tour gives you the opportunity to customize the tour to your favorite places and arrive to them before the super-packed tourist boats arrive.

Boat Tours in El Nido

Before I start explaining how we booked our private boat tour in El Nido, I will share with you which tours are usually offered in El Nido. You can choose between 4 different tours. Each will have 4-6 destinations. Usually, the most popular tours are A and C. Due to their popularity, you will see a lot of people there at the same time. If I were on a limited budget, I’d choose tour B and try to see both Entalula Island and Pinagbuyutan Island. They were also our choice on the private tour and the highlight of our trip to El Nido.

  • Tour A:  Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island, and 7 Commando Beach
  • Tour B: Cudognon Cave, Cathedral Cave, Snake Island, Entalula Island (or Pinagbuyutan Island), and Popolkan Island
  • Tour C:  Secret Beach, Hidden Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Tapiutan Island, and Helicopter Island
  • Tour D:  Small Lagoon, Cadlao Lagoon, Nat Nat Beach, Pasandigan Cove, Paradise Beach, and Bukal Island

El Nido Tours

The best private boat tour in El Nido

We spent about half a day trying to find a place that offers private, customized tours. It was already late and as didn’t find anything to fit our wishes, we decided to head for dinner at Frendz Hostel. On our way there we saw a small tourist office right next door. Figuring, if it’s next to the hostel so it must be quite popular, so we walked in asked about private tours.

To our surprise, we got a great offer for 8,000 PHP boat coast, no matter how many people we are. With this cost, you can also choose 5 destinations to visit from any tour – as long as they are not too far apart (see map above to have an idea of choices). And as our luck was on a roll, the next day we also found a great couple to share the boat with! This then came to 2,000 PHP per person.

While I don’t have the name for the agency we booked with and it’s not on Google Maps, here is how you can find them. Go to Frendz Hostel and on the left side of it, you’ll see the place. Here are the photos of what it looks like from the outside. The photos are not the best quality since I never expected to use them, but hopefully, it helps!

Best time to visit El Nido, Palawan

This island is warm all year round and it’s best to travel here between November and May. While the highest temperatures are in April and May, they are also the driest months. We were there in April and while it was quite hot, it was bearable. Read more on best times to visit the Philippines in general here .

El Nido Private Tour 2

1. Pinagbuyutan Island

The first stop was truly the best way to kick-start our private boat tour in El Nido. When we arrived, we couldn’t believe that we had this huge sandy beach and copious amounts of palm trees all to ourselves. Pinagbuyutan Island is absolutely stunning and the huge limestone cliffs make it very unique as well. We were the only boat on the entire island and we really took advantage of that!

El Nido Private Tour 3

2. Snake Island

Snake Island is essentially a long sandbank, shaped like a snake. The sandbank connects the island to the mainland. It’s very popular to take a walk in the sea and swim here, but beware – due to it’s unique look it tends to be quite popular!

El Nido Private Tour 21

3. Entalula Island

Arriving on this island was an absolute dream. This is where our lunch was served and it really couldn’t be more perfect! We spend about 1,5 hours here and a max of 2 boats parked there at the same time! We ate, swam, sunbathe, and hung out. This island is usually part of tour B and just as we were leaving the location, about 10 boats, with around 30 people in each, arrived. Wow, we were very happy to be leaving and can’t even imagine how crowded that tiny beach was afterward. Yet another advantage to the private tour!

El Nido Private Tour 9

4. Shimizu Island

Originally we chose to see the Cathedral Cave as our fourth stop, but the crew told us that at this time of the year there are dangerous sea snakes swimming there, so they recommended we go to another place. So then the fourth stop was Shimizu Island. We spent the entire time snorkeling here and absolutely loved it! The visibility was perfect, the reef was colorful and there were so many interesting fish to follow around.

El Nido Private Tour 1

5. 7 Commando Beach

Our last, and least favorite stop on our private boat tour in El Nido was the famous 7 commando beach. This is also the last stop for tour A, so we definitely didn’t get to experience the peace and quiet of previous islands. It was loud, crowded and at least 30 boats were blocking the shore. We wanted to snorkel, but the boats kept coming in and out and we really didn’t feel like having an accident. So we decided to walk a little lower down the beach by the beach-volley place, to sunbathe. This is the only place we would skip. However, if you like a lively island party to end your private tour with, then you’re in for a treat!

El Nido Private Tour 11

Disclaimer:

Combination and party boat tours are currently forbidden in El Nido. This new policy has been implemented to help minimize the negative impact of tourism in El Nido. These attempts are made to limit the number of tourists visiting El Nido’s most popular destinations (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Beach). You will find that there are still tour offices going around this rule though.

I can't remember what time we started, but the law is the same for everyone and they don't allow to start tours earlier (except for some very special trips). The difference was that we went to those further away first, so we managed to get there before the bigger groups arrive. And that is only possible with a private tour :) Hope it helps!

Omggg my friend just got back from doing this but she couldn't remember any of the detailsssss. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS INFO!! I love a good private tour, and the destinations just make it that much better!!

You're welcome Kay! It's not easy to remember all the details since there is so much info to take in :D But lucky for me I saved all my IG stories and could just go back to remember :) Glad it helps!

Tour Details

Tour A is most beloved because it will bring you to see not one but two of three beautiful lagoons located around Miniloc Island: either Small Lagoon or Big Lagoon, and Secret Lagoon. Swimming and snorkeling there is just amazing. Clear water, numerous fishes… you name it!

Tour A will then take you to Shimizu island, where you can snorkel and see corals and/or relax on the white sand beach. This is also where, most of the time, your boat will stop for lunch. With its great limestone cliffs covered with vegetation, a representative of the geological beauty of El Nido.

At the end of the day, the tour will stop of 7 Commando Beach, which has a long white sand beach, and where you can also find a little bar that will serve you refreshing drinks. While snorkeling there, you may encounter a few sea turtles, so keep your eyes open!

Tour A Itinerary

1 seven comando.

Seven Commandos Beach is part of Tour A in El Nido, which is the most popular tour. Everyone wants to see the Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon. I don’t blame them they are both epic. This tour is a good mix of snorkeling and sightseeing, hanging on beaches and swimming. It can get crowded but that is the nature of the beast in El Nido. The most beautiful places are the most popular more often than not.

2 Biglagoon

This majestic Miniloc Island lagoon called Big Lagoon is one of El Nido island-hopping tour A’s highlights, one of El Nido’s most popular tours. As you enter the Big Lagoon, everything is a sight to behold — the crystal-clear blue water, the ray of light peeking through the top of the cliffs, and the luscious calcareous formation. The Big Lagoon of Island-hopping Tour A has become popular for its elegance as seen from drone shots to kayak views in several movies and postcards.

3 Shimizu Island

Shimizu Island is one of the numerous ones dotting El Nido’s Bacuit Bay. This small island had become a popular spot for snorkeling because of its colorful marine life. It’s part of the Tour A island-hopping package and an alternative stopover spot for lunch, so it can get a bit crowded here during midday.

The Japanese-sounding name makes one wonder about the island’s origin. According to guides and boatmen, a group of scuba divers explored the waters of El Nido decades ago, and one of them didn’t make it back from a deep underwater tunnel. Days were spent searching for the diver’s body until it was found on an island with imposing rock formations and fine white sand. The deceased diver’s last name was Shimizu, and the island was later named after him.

4 Payong Payong Island

Payong-Payong is one of the picturesque white sand beaches on Miniloc Island. The beach is a popular stop for lunch during El Nido’s Tour A island-hopping option. The idyllic setting consists of a small beach, amazing cliffs, and commanding rock formations. There are several trees dotting the island, which provide the perfect shade for picnics.

The crystal-clear waters of Payong-Payong Beach are abundant with fishes and corals perfect for snorkeling. The waves are just small and gentle, which makes it great for leisurely swimming. Because there are no hoops and volleyball nets here, there is not much to do here but just chill and rest after a hearty lunch stop. You can explore the cliffs offshore but make sure that you wear the right shoes – the rocks in El Nido are rough and sharp and Payong-Payong Beach is no exception.

5 Secret Lagoon

It’s no secret that El Nido has been blessed with more than its fair share of postcard perfect scenic locations. From majestic limestone formation jutting out from crystal clear turquoise seas to powdery white sandy beaches along its coastlines, not to mention the sheer diversity of marine wildlife in its perfectly hued oceans, its no wonder foreign publications have declared it the best beach and island destination in the Philippines.

As soon as your boat docks near the lagoon, your guide will direct you to a small opening hidden between a towering wall of limestone rocks by the seashore. It’s easy to miss this secret spot, and most people wonder if its possible to crawl through this tiny hole.

But once you get through it, you’ll be greeted by an unusual sight: a massive limestone rock formation surrounding a small body of water right in the middle of it.

Enclosed within a lagoon and eclipsed by towering rocks all around you, this awe inspiring scenery lends an otherworldly experience for visitors.

Depending on where your boat is parked, you’ll find more secret coves and hidden white sand beaches in the areas surrounding the secret lagoon. Take your time look around beyond the tiny opening to the secret lagoon, and you’ll be rewarded with more spectacular nooks and crannies waiting to be discovered.

Same with tour A, this package is value worthy. The staff assigned to us were friendly, hospitable and accommodating. Day trip to El Nido's Bacuit Bay with private boat

Description

Booking notes.

Embark on a memorable journey with El Nido Tour C by private boat, where you can experience the beauty of Bacuit Bay at your own pace and without crowds.

This tour is one of the most scenic and unforgettable experiences in El Nido, as it takes you to explore some of the most stunning beaches and islands, including Secret Beach, Hidden Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Tapiutan Island, and Helicopter Island.

Discover the mesmerizing crystal-clear waters and the breathtaking landscapes, where you can snorkel among the diverse marine life or simply relax on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. With the privacy and flexibility offered by a private boat charter, you can create your own itinerary and enjoy an unforgettable adventure.

Meet your tour guide at the meeting point in El Nido town and head to the boat departure point to start your full-day boat tour. Discover the stunning islands and secluded beaches scattered throughout Bacuit Bay, including Secret Beach, Hidden Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Tapiutan Island, and Helicopter Island. Immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters of Bacuit Bay and snorkel among the vibrant tropical fish that call the area home. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the boat or on one of the stunning beaches. After the tour, return to El Nido town.

  • Matinloc Island is an absolute gem located just 20 minutes away from El Nido town, making it a must-see attraction in Bacuit Bay. Paired with Tapiutan Island, these two neighboring islands form the narrow Tapiutan Strait, home to some of the best snorkeling spots in the area. Matinloc Island boasts several highlights, including the Matinloc Shrine, Hidden Beach, and Secret Beach. To reach Matinloc Shrine, you'll need to climb the steps of an abandoned building, where you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the stunning Tapiutan Strait. Additionally, there's a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary that you can visit. The tiny Secret Beach, located on Matinloc Island, can only be accessed by swimming through a small slit in the rock face. It's said that Alex Garland, the author of the novel turned movie, "The Beach," lived in El Nido and was inspired by Secret Beach. Meanwhile, Hidden Beach is a small, paradisiacal cove nestled within limestone cliffs, making it invisible from the open sea. Its powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters make it a must-visit spot in El Nido. Tapiutan Island is situated further out in Bacuit Bay and offers a serene atmosphere with pristine sandy beaches and excellent snorkeling opportunities. Talisay Beach is one of the highlights of Tapiutan Island, boasting calm and shallow waters that are great for snorkeling or relaxing on the warm sand. Meanwhile, Star Beach is named after the harmless starfish that populate its seabed, making it one of the best snorkeling spots in Bacuit Bay. Lastly, Dilumacad Island, also known as "Helicopter Island," is another must-visit spot with its towering cliffs, lush tropical vegetation, white sand beach, and excellent snorkeling opportunities.

Best Island hopping in El Nido with a private tour

El Nido Pinagbuyutan Island Beach Hut Couple

Island hopping in El Nido is an absolute must-do when visiting. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with small white sand beaches, lagoons, crystal clear water, and towering limestone cliffs. Choose from the four different boat tours and explore this paradise. This blog post shares our experiences and tips for island hopping with a private tour in El Nido, Palawan.

Island hopping in El Nido

Going on an island-hopping tour in El Nido is a must-do. You can choose whether you want to go on a group or private boat tour. A shared boat is the cheaper option, but you can only select one from the four boat tours. A private tour allows you to combine stops from two tours (not all tour companies will do that) and start earlier than the other tours. We started our tour at 8 am. Group tours usually start around 9.30 – 10 am.

An Island hopping tour in El Nido includes a boat with crew, snorkeling gear, drinking water, lunch, and the environmental tax. If you are vegan/vegetarian, don’t forget to tell them before, they will cook a meal for you without meat or fish. We had rice, veggies, and a fantastic fruit platter.

El Nido island hopping tours

There are four different island hopping tours you can choose from in El Nido, which we have listed here with our recommendations. If you book a private boat tour, they usually allow you to choose from two different tours.

Tour A is the most popular one and that means the places on this tour are usually the most crowded ones.

  • 7 Commandos Beach
  • Secret Lagoon
  • Shimizu Island
  • Big Lagoon (additional entrance fee of 200 pesos per person)

Tipp: If you don’t choose this tour, you can visit 7 Commandos Beach from Corong Corong Beach in El Nido by yourself with a kayak, which is a fun adventure, too.

Secret Beach El Nido Philippines

Some of our favorite places on our private Island hopping trip were from tour B. We loved Pinagbuyutan Island and the small paradise beach of Entalula Island. We did not pick any of the caves since we looked more for the beach and lagoon stops.

  • Pinagbuyutan Island
  • Cudugnon Cave
  • Entalula Island
  • Cathedral Cave
  • Snake Island

El Nido Pinagbuyutan Island Beach Hut Couple

The rest of the stops on the private boat tour we chose from tour C. We loved Helicopter Island and Secret Beach.

  • Helicopter Island
  • Hidden Beach
  • Secret Beach
  • Matinloc Shrine
  • Tapiotan Island

Helicopter Island El Nido Philippines

This is the least popular boat tour in El Nido. If you go on a group trip, we would recommend you choose tour D because chances are high that the boat won’t be complete on this tour.

  • Small Lagoon (additional entrance fee of 200 pesos per person)
  • Paradise Beach
  • Nat Nat Beach
  • Serenity Beach

Where to book your private island hopping tour

We chose a private boat tour to go island hopping in El Nido and booked our trip at Wanderlust Travel El Nido . We can recommend booking with them because they did a great job. The crew was very friendly and hard-working, the boat was big and comfortable, they made vegan lunch for us, and we could choose stops that we liked from two different tours.

We recommend you book your tour 1-2 days before and tell them you would like to leave as early as possible in the morning, which is usually around 8 am. The meeting point is at their office, and they will take you to the boat from here.

Wanderlust Travel El Nido offers group tours as well. It’s not only for private boat tours.

Cost for a private boat tour

The Price for the boat (crew, lunch, snorkeling gear included) was 8’000 pesos (150 $). Besides, we had to pay 200 pesos (4 $) per person for the Environmental fee. This fee is valid for ten days, so if you do several different island hopping tours in Bacuit Bay within this time, you won’t have to pay for it again.

What to pack for your island hopping tour

  • Dry bag for your camera & phone
  • Swimwear & towel
  • Reef-friendly Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses / Hat

Info: You won’t have to bring drinking water for your trip. The boat company will provide a big filter water bottle and reusable cups. In fact, no plastic bottles are allowed on boat tours in El Nido to save the environment. This made us so happy to see.

Best Island Hopping Tour in El Nido

Which of these El Nido tours should you book? A few years ago, tour A and tour C were the most popular. However, due to recent changes to put less pressure on the environment, all tours are equally very impressive. We personally would recommend adding tours A, B, or D to your Philippines Travel Guide .

Where to book an El Nido Island Hopping Tour?

Since the new regulations in 2019, there is a limited amount of people per day that may enter Bacuit Bay. We recommend you book at least two days ahead to be sure you have a spot. There are a few things to keep an eye on while booking an El Nido boat tour. Book a tour online or in town at ArtCafe .

  • Don’t go for the lowest price! The lowest-priced tours will mix you with another group, so they get a full boat. The quality of these tours can’t be guaranteed.
  • Make sure drinking water is included because you are not allowed to take plastic bottles.
  • Check if the tour includes the environmental tax. (200PHP) – Feb 2019
  • Check if snorkeling gear & kayak are included.
  • Try checking the company’s reviews on TripAdvisor.

My family of 5 decided to do tour A using a private speed boat. How much do you suggest we tip the workers?

Hey! We’d usually opt for 10% of the total price but try to pay the workers directly and not the operator. 😊

Throughout the tour the Sturmfrei Travel and Tours guides and driver took great care to ensure the planned itinerary went ahead and met my expectations. Ultimately, though, the tour actually exceeded my expectations in so many ways: the region's amazing natural beauty was enhanced even further by both the Sturmfrei and local guides' general knowledge of Philippine culture and history, the Sturmfrei guides' efforts in ensuring my safety and enjoyment of the various physical activities I participated in, and my introduction to local Filipino foods and delicacies. Booking an El Nido island hopping tour will let you discover these pristine beaches in Palawan with crystal-clear waters and stunning lagoons with limestone rock formations. Lunch is usually included in an island hopping tour, with a change in serving style since 2023 from picnic or boodle fight to packed lunches. Here are the must-see attractions on an El Nido Tour A itinerary:

See our popular El Nido Tours and Activities

Big Lagoon in El Nido

El Nido island-hopping boats used to go inside the Big Lagoon, but the local tourism office changed this. Now, the only way to go inside is by swimming or paddling a kayak through the narrow passageway. Once inside, enjoy swimming in its crystal-clear blue waters, with sunlight peering through the beautiful rock formations.

Secret Lagoon El Nido from above

To reach the Secret Lagoon or Hidden Lagoon, your El Nido Tour A boat will dock near a small white sand beach in the southern part of Miniloc Island. You'll have to get off the boat and pass through a rocky cave-like opening, so watch your head, especially during high tide. If it's low tide, you can easily wade into the opening.

Inside, you'll find a small natural pool surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. You can take a refreshing dip in the cool water and enjoy the soft white sand. Unlike other lagoons, the water here stays cooler because of the cliffs that provide shade.

Boat docked at Payong-payong beach

Another stop on this tour is Payong Payong Beach, located in the southern part of Miniloc Island in El Nido. The beach has stunning cliffs, rocks, and shady trees, perfect for picnics. Snorkeling is popular here due to the clear waters filled with fish and coral, and the gentle waves are great for swimming.

Keep in mind that there aren't any sports or activities available, so it's mainly a place to relax. Here, you can lounge on the sandy beach, swim, take photos, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this secluded spot.

See our popular El Nido Vacation Packages

Shimizu Island Aerial view

Shimizu Island, one of the islands in El Nido’s Bacuit Bay, is the ideal tropical escape with its serene white-sand beach and vibrant marine life. Once you make your stop here, you can relax on the pristine beach or snorkel to discover a plethora of fish species in various colors and sizes.

Legend has it that the island got its name from a scuba diver named Shimizu, whose body was found on the island after he went missing exploring underwater tunnels in the area.

Shimizu Island is a popular lunch stopover for El Nido Tour A island-hopping. After enjoying a meal, you can continue swimming or rest under the shade of the limestone cliffs.

Seven Commandos Beach

Seven Commandos Beach, another renowned beach in El Nido , stretches 320 meters and boasts pristine white sand, coconut trees, and towering limestone cliffs in the backdrop. Although technically connected to the mainland of El Nido in Palawan, it can only be reached by boat.

Legends surround the beach's name; some say it's named after stranded soldiers, while others claim it's linked to a fishing vessel or a carved stone found by locals.

The beach offers ample space for activities like beach volleyball. Its gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and snorkeling, where you can discover its rich marine life.

Shimizu Island Tropical Vibes

One of the best ways to enjoy the stunning tourist spots of El Nido is through an island hopping tour. Here are some essential tips to make the most of your experience:

When you're heading out for El Nido island hopping , make sure you've got these essentials: sunscreen to protect your skin, a towel for drying off after swimming, drinking water to stay hydrated, and aqua shoes for comfortable walking on the beach and in the water.

Don't worry about bringing your own life vest; they're already provided in the boats. Just strap one on before you set out to explore the best beaches in El Nido .

If you want to go snorkeling, remember that snorkeling gear might not be included in your package. You can usually rent for an extra fee, or if you have your own gear, feel free to bring it along for the tour.

Kayaks are available as add-ons, giving you the chance to paddle around the crystal-clear waters and discover hidden coves and beaches at your own pace.

Each stop during your island-hopping tour usually lasts around an hour. Use this time wisely to enjoy the beauty of each location, whether it's lounging on the beach, snorkeling among colorful fishes, or snapping photos of the breathtaking scenery.

Keep in mind that the itinerary might change depending on the season or water conditions.

Your safety is important. Pay attention to any warnings from the Coast Guard, as tours might be canceled if conditions are deemed unsafe. When booking your tour, talk to your operator about refund policies in case of cancellations.

Help keep El Nido beautiful by not littering. Remember to take all your trash with you when you leave, leaving the islands pristine for future visitors to enjoy.
