18 Thanksgiving Destinations to Satisfy Your Wanderlust This Fall

Because sometimes the holidays are even more enjoyable in a new destination. Here, our favorite spots in the U.S. to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Whether you want to seek out sunny rays in warm temperatures or bundle up surrounded by the last of the season's spectacular fall foliage , we've got a Thanksgiving trip planned for you. From Hudson Valley, New York, to Miami Florida, to Sante Fe, New Mexico, these are all beautiful destinations thats views and cultural (and culinary!) offerings you won't soon forget. Some offer access to our favorite bustling cities (many with historic locales you'll want to see while you are there), while others take you to the quiet of nature and all its countryside scenery.

And now to celebrate this season of thankfulness in style with the best Thanksgiving destinations to visit in the U.S.

Hotel Saint Vincent in New Orleans, Louisiana

hotel saint vincent thanksgiving destinations

Take in New Orleans and its take on Thanksgiving with daily weather peaking in the mid-70s. On the holiday itself, you can feast on a deep-fried turkey or turducken, a Cajun creation that cooks boneless chicken breast inside of a boneless duck breast inside of a turkey at one of many restaurants that stays open. You can also don your hat or fascinator for the Thanksgiving Classic, a derby that will kick off the racing season at the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, and catch the Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade as it processes from Superdome to French Market. As with any visit, you'll want to top it off with a beignet from Cafe du Monde.

We recommend staying at the bold-hued, mod-maximalist magic at Hotel Saint Vincent in the Lower Garden District on shop-and-lunch-always Magazine Street. See if you won’t ponder redoing a room in the custom, abstract wallpapers, and nabbing a takeaway from in-house shop By George .

Wildflower Farms, Auberge Resorts Collection in Gardiner, New York

Named one of VERANDA's Most Beautiful Hotels in the World , Wildflower Farms makes a serene holiday destination with its freestanding cabins overlooking Shawangunk Ridge in the Hudson Valley , all outfitted with natural materials you'll likely be able to find in the woodlands just outside the cottage windows. The hotel pivots away from the region's established Scandinavian-inspired style and into a more mature design vernacular informed by native woodlands and wildflower fields. .

Come late November, you can catch the last of the season's Forage the Farm experiences, foraging their 3-acre farm and preparing a meal with their executive chef, or you can join in on a hands-on Winter Buds wreath-making workshop, or take a winter hike into the Mohonk Preserve or Minnewaska State Park.

The Absolute Best Places To Spend Thanksgiving In The U.S.

People gathered around Thanksgiving table

The Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. is right around the corner, but it's not too late to make travel plans. Whether you're looking for an escape with your family or to escape from them, it may be time to start thinking outside the usual spots when planning for Thanksgiving. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), over 2 million passengers passed through TSA checkpoints daily in the week before and after Thanksgiving in 2022. It's safe to say that the November holiday is one of the busiest times of year to be on the go.

November also brings cooler weather across the United States. While some travelers embrace the colder temperatures, others stretch their snowbird feathers and flock south for the winter. Our list of the best places to spend Thanksgiving in the U.S. offers a variety of destinations and activities — and some might surprise you.

Solitude, Utah

Utah locals know what an incredible ski location Solitude is, but it's still under the radar for many. Located just 30 minutes from Salt Lake City, Solitude Mountain Ski Resort boasts over 1,200 acres of prime skiing real estate. While ski season may not be in full swing during Thanksgiving, this scenic mountain destination is anything but boring. In fact, because the mountain may not be fully open, the crowds might be lower, and hotels may be offering deals to fill their vacancies.

Solitude offers visitors plenty of activities that don't involve skiing. From restaurants to spas to trail hikes and more, the town's slower pace can be an appealing change from the hectic holiday season. However, according to Solitude Mountain Resort's Instagram account, the 2023-2024 season will open on November 17, so it might not be too much of a stretch to imagine yourself at least seeing some snow on your Thanksgiving visit.

Arcadia, California

California has a diverse ecosystem as well as a large overall population. The Golden State has everything from northern ski towns to southern beaches, and its biggest cities are often bustling with locals and travelers alike. Outdoor enthusiasts love visiting Southern California because of its mild, year-round temperatures, making hiking and enjoying the outdoors easier. Arcadia, California, located in Los Angeles County, is closer to the mountains than the city of Los Angeles. This makes Arcadia the perfect place to escape from the crowds and enjoy a more peaceful holiday.

Popular hiking trails near Arcadia include Santa Anita Canyon, Sturtevant Falls, and Jones Peak. Some of these well-known hiking trails tend to be overcrowded, but the crowds dissipate as the Thanksgiving weekend draws near. If hiking and biking get to be too much, you can always hop back over to Los Angeles and hit the tourist spots, which may be a bit less crowded around the holiday.

Willamette Valley, Oregon

Skip the crowded wine regions of California and head to Willamette Valley, Oregon. Book your hotel or rental property in Portland and make a convenient day trip to nearby Willamette Valley to visit their vineyards and enjoy the scenery. With over 700 different wineries to choose from, it doesn't matter if you prefer red or white because there is a winery in the region that's right for you. The regions of the valley are divided into the North Willamette Valley, South Willamette Valley, Mid Willamette Valley, and West Cascades.

For something a little more family-friendly, check out the Albany Historic Carousel and Museum . Admission and tours are always free; carousel rides are currently $2 per person. Families may also enjoy the Oregon Film Trail. The trail covers movies filmed throughout Oregon, but in Willamette Valley, you'll be able to see the setting of "Stand By Me" and "Twilight," which were filmed in the area.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Home to festivals for every occasion, New Orleans, Louisiana, is an excellent option for a Thanksgiving getaway. The temperatures hover around the mid-70s during the day, and the nights are cool rather than cold. Crowds will be thinner between Halloween and Christmas, but don't count on the festive city being empty. Even in November, there are plenty of activities to choose from, including the days leading up to Thanksgiving. Several holiday markets will be open to help you get ahead on your Christmas list, and the Oak Street Po'Boy Festival promises to keep you full until Turkey Day.

Don't settle for a boring turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Instead, try a "turducken," which is a Cajun creation. The unique main dish, created by cooking chicken breasts inside a duck breast inside a turkey, is offered at several of the restaurants that stay open on the holiday. Enjoyable activities and someone else cooking? That sounds like an excellent Thanksgiving.

Hudson Valley, New York

New York sounds like a fun place to be, especially in the city that never sleeps during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. However, due to its popularity, the parade can become unpleasantly crowded. Instead, escape to the Hudson Valley area to take in the stunning fall foliage and beautiful views of the Catskills. Along with offering plenty of hiking trails, Hudson Valley is also a great destination for history buffs, and guided tours of historic sites, such as Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate, Philipsburg Manor, and Union Church of Pocantico Hills, are given throughout November (before closing for the winter season).

Families may also enjoy catching the last weekend of the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze , which is held at Van Cortlandt Manor. Running until November 19, the event is a walking experience through thousands of hand-carved pumpkins on display in all shapes and sizes. The Hudson Valley location also employs synchronized lights throughout the displays, adding a unique ambiance to the family-friendly event.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is charming, colorful, and a wonderful place to visit during Thanksgiving. Like New Orleans,  Charleston is a foodie destination with milder temperatures in November, allowing you to enjoy everything the city offers outdoors. The Charleston City Market is a must-visit location for shopping, as it offers wares from over 300 unique artists and craftsmen. It is a great place to shop locally for Christmas gifts while supporting Charleston-based businesses.

Kids and adults alike will be entertained by activities in The Charleston Museum, the South Carolina Aquarium , and the Children's Museum of the Low Country. Walking tours of every kind are a must-do to dive deeper into Charleston's rich history, but if you want to elevate the ordinary, consider taking a carriage tour. An old-fashioned horse and carriage tour takes your group around downtown Charleston and regales you with the history of the city.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama

Alabama's beaches are hidden gems in the state, even though they're in plain sight. Travelers often skip right by Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in favor of Florida's beaches. During shoulder season and into low season, the crowds disperse, and hotels and rentals offer great deals for travelers looking to escape the impending winter weather. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are separate towns, but they're close enough to explore both.

Seafood may not be a traditional Thanksgiving meal, but it should be at the beach. Restaurants like Lucy Buffett's LuLu's , the Original Oyster House, and The Gulf have similar menus with slight differences in their specialties and locations, but all serve seafood local to Alabama's Gulf Coast. While you may not want to swim in the ocean in November, the pleasant weather is a great time to build sandcastles with family or take a sunset stroll along the area's scenic beaches.

Lake Tahoe, Nevada

Another location known for its skiing, Lake Tahoe is a luxurious choice for Thanksgiving. Driving the Lake Tahoe Loop will give you a great view of the gorgeous lake. Stop along the way and stroll along some public beaches, or dip your toes in the clear, cold water if you're feeling bold. In the community of South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove houses the M.S. Dixie II, a paddlewheel-style boat that offers daytime and dinner cruises around the lake. Even if you're not skiing, Heavenly Mountain Resort has a gondola that takes visitors up the mountain to the observation deck, so you can still take in the beautiful views.

North Lake Tahoe is less developed than its southern counterpart, but that doesn't mean it lacks personality. The northern part of the lake offers ski runs and trails, but there are also mountain biking trails, incredible hikes, and fishing opportunities to satisfy every outdoor adventurer.

Ocala, Florida

The self-proclaimed "Horse Capital of the World," Ocala is known for its competitive horse-owning community. However, you don't have to be knowledgeable about horses or their competitions to enjoy the luxury and ambiance of the world-class World Equestrian Center (WEC) and its hotel, The Equestrian Hotel. Visitors to the WEC can enjoy its on-site lounges and restaurants, and the center hosts plenty of non-horse activities like music concerts, theatrical performances, and trade shows. If you plan a visit a few days before Thanksgiving, you can attend the Premier Hunter/Level 6 Jumper event or the Ocala Holiday Craft Show.

On Thanksgiving Day, Stirrups , one of the hotel restaurants, hosts a Thanksgiving Day buffet, so you can spend more time with your family and less time cooking and cleaning. Also, the day after Thanksgiving, the WEC Winter Wonderland kicks off the Christmas season with a display of holiday lights and entertainment.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

The town of Hot Springs is a growingly popular destination, especially among camping enthusiasts. If you'd consider "roughing it" instead of staying in a hotel for Thanksgiving, popular campgrounds like Catherine's Landing  are a five-minute drive from the city proper, so you could blend your outdoor adventure with city amenities. At Catherine's Landing, you can choose from cottage rentals, yurts, RV sites, or tent camping, depending on your "roughing it" comfort level.

Hiking and biking are obvious activity choices, but you can also rent kayaks, canoes, and pontoon boats from Catherine's Landing to enjoy water activities. To add a thrill-seeking adventure to your Thanksgiving holiday, consider a zipline canopy tour at Hot Springs Adventure Park , which is also located at Catherine's Landing, and the zipline tours run year-round. Back in Hot Springs, shopping and dining choices are plentiful, as are family-friendly activities like playing mini-golf, visiting a petting zoo, and exploring the Mid-America Science Museum.

Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg is a place where the past and present collide. Colonial Williamsburg could take all week to explore if you wanted it to. Incredibly immersive, it's the largest living history museum in the world. In addition to the historical value of a visit, the areas around Williamsburg boast championship golf courses, incredible spas, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg, one of the best theme parks in the Northeast . Busch Gardens Williamsburg is uniquely themed to 17th-century Europe, and it has over 50 rides and attractions, including the world's fastest multi-launch coaster, Pantheon.

Save some room for the Foods and Feasts of Colonial Virginia event that occurs on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving in the Jamestown Settlement. Here, you can learn cooking techniques before refrigeration and electricity were invented. Also, visitors who return to the museum on Sunday can take advantage of discounts on store purchases made on Museum Store Sunday.

Lampe, Missouri

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is the crown jewel of Lampe, Missouri, and offers group and private tours of the expansive area for those who appreciate the outdoors. Wildlife Tram Tours gives narrated, guided tours past waterfalls, bluffs, and other scenic stops along the way. Private tours are also available for a more intimate, personalized experience. While the tours are extra, park admission does grant access to other park attractions, including a treehouse built by the team from the Animal Planet television show "Treehouse Masters."

If camping in the Ozarks isn't your thing, there are other options for places to stay on your visit. Because of the park's proximity to the Arkansas border, you could choose to stay in nearby Eureka Springs, which features a historic and artsy downtown area, or drive a little over 30 miles to Branson, Missouri, where you'll find plenty of entertainment options and restaurants serving Thanksgiving meals.

Amelia Island, Florida

Beaches stretch as far as the eye can see in Amelia Island, Florida. Fortunately, they remain mostly uncrowded, especially during Thanksgiving. You'll also find world-class golfing on multiple island golf courses. While there are plenty of amenities, the small-town feeling of Amelia Island encourages a more relaxed pace during your visit. If you need a little more activity, kayaking, biking, and fishing tours are plentiful, and the island's parks feature historic sites, playgrounds, and nature trails.

Rental homes are a great option for a large gathering, but the island also boasts luxurious hotels and bed and breakfast options. If you're looking for a luxurious Thanksgiving experience, the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island is a beachfront property that includes a spa, restaurant, and a pool on-site. For a more intimate experience, choose one of the bed and breakfasts on the island. Many of these are located in historic homes updated with modern amenities.

Macon, Georgia

Southern Georgia is home to Macon, which is on its way to becoming as popular as Nashville for up-and-coming musicians. The music city of Macon will celebrate the upcoming holiday season with a performance by the Macon Pops Orchestra the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the Holiday Light Show Extravaganza  displays over 500,000 lights that synchronize to the music. During the week of Thanksgiving, visitors can also get hands-on with craft workshops at Startup Studios, making snowman lanterns or glass ornaments.

If you're looking for inexpensive fun, Macon has a host of farmer's markets and craft markets that open at various times throughout the month. The Museum of Aviation is a short drive from town, and free admission makes it a great option for families and history buffs. If you are interested in the outdoors or Native American history and culture, consider visiting Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park , one of Macon's most popular tourist destinations.

Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade each Thanksgiving morning has been a family tradition in the US for nearly 100 years. But seeing the parade in person is a true bucket list item, making NYC one of the most iconic places to go on Thanksgiving.

And everyone knows that the end of this parade ushers in the holiday season, with Santa himself closing out the historic tradition. You can continue celebrating the holidays by spending Thanksgiving exploring the city’s holiday markets, like the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park .

best city to visit during thanksgiving

This is a great list and I’m fortunate to have recently visited St. Augustine with my husband. One of my favorite holiday destinations is Branson, MO. Ozark Mountain Christmas officially begins Nov. 1 each year, with all sorts of beautiful lighting displays that complement the natural beauty of the Ozarks. In November, Veterans Week and Thanksgiving Week are extremely popular! Shopping, golf, live theater and music shows, numerous attractions and dining options make Branson, MO a perfect place for a romantic getaway, a girls’ weekend, a guys’ get-together, a multi-generational family-friendly option or for starting new traditions!

Escape the holiday hoopla, and be grateful for a far-from-home getaway.

Ah, Thanksgiving. Pumpkin pie, roasted turkey, football games and time with friends and family are top draws for celebrating the time-honored holiday at home. But if the prospect of navigating crowded airport terminals and bumper-to-bumper traffic to spend time with extended family and engaging in contentious political discussions (or cooking the bird and all the trimmings) has you pining for an alternative escape, fret not. With some help from seasoned travel pros, we've pinpointed unexpected places to spend a stress-free Thanksgiving. So ditch the turkey, gravy and green bean casserole for a sunny locale, urban retreat or snowy getaway over the long weekend.

St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest, Hungary.

Budapest, Hungary

For deal-chasers, "Europe is the place to go over Thanksgiving," says Wendy Perrin, founder and editor of travel-planning site WendyPerrin.com. Autumn marks a low season, yet the weather is still comfortable and rates are relatively less expensive compared to spring and summer. And in Budapest , you can admire striking architecture, soak in heated thermal baths and embrace European charm and Hungarian culinary specialties at charming cafes around Castle Hill. Best of all, in Budapest, you can start your holiday shopping early at brightly lit Christmas markets. Pick up a few gifts and admire the dazzling light displays at the Christmas Fair at Basilica (beginning on Black Friday), and the Christmas Market on Vorosmarty Square.

Over the holiday weekend, there are plenty of festive, kid-friendly traditions at top resorts in the area, from cookie decorating to tree-lighting ceremonies. And with ski season beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 22, powder seekers can tackle well-groomed trails at Park City Mountain Resort before checking out the charming shops and eateries in Canyons Village and strolling along Main Street. Sunset on palm fringed beach, Costa Rica

Itching for a warm-weather escape? If you're looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation – from wildlife-viewing to an adrenaline-pumping zip line above Monteverde's Cloud Rainforest to lounging in a hammock beneath swaying palms – Costa Rica is an ideal escape. While you'll be visiting at the tail end of rainy season, you can take advantage of a few off-season benefits. Aside from fewer tourist crowds and verdant landscapes, you can also secure discounted lodging rates and flights. Plus, you can swap stuffing and mashed potatoes for fresh fruit and morning yoga sessions, and embrace Costa Rica's "pura vida" (pure life) philosophy with wellness-minded activities and nutritious cuisine.

Dunn's River Fall, in Ocho Rios Jamaica, Waterfall

Whether you want to lounge on golden sands, hike along the Blue Mountains or climb the legendary Dunn's River Falls waterfall, there are plenty of ways to embrace Jamaica's picturesque Caribbean scenery and laid-back vibes. "Hurricane season officially ends November 30, so traveling on or before Thanksgiving means you'll be catching the final low rates of the Caribbean's shoulder season before the snowbirds arrive," says Lindsey Olander, editor at travel site Jetsetter.com. Even better, in November and December, temperatures hover in the 70s and mid-80s, and you can secure discounted resort rates. "For sun-seekers, I'd recommend Jamaica in November, which was (thankfully) spared from recent hurricanes," Olander adds.

Old Quebec City at dawn.

Quebec City

If you can't make it to France this fall, you can still enjoy a European-inspired setting and plenty of charm in Quebec City , Perrin says. Francophiles and foodies alike can delight in French-inspired gastronomy at top dining institutions. Plus, the centuries-old structures and quaint cobblestone streets and bistros add to the city's enchanting atmosphere. History buffs can check out Battlefields Park, the Citadel and the Notre-Dame Basilica, while nature lovers can stroll along the serene Terrasse Dufferin. And although temperatures dip into the 30s and 50s at this time of year, you can still admire brilliant maple trees and seize upon shoulder-season discounts.

best city to visit during thanksgiving

Asheville, North Carolina

While Asheville may conjure images of microbreweries and the awe-inspiring Blue Ridge Parkway, there's much more to experience over Thanksgiving. Along with temperatures hovering in the mid-50s and 70s, "you've got the fall foliage," Perrin says, with peak leaf-peeping opportunities in early November. Plus, there's the 8,000-acre, decked-out Biltmore Estate, which has a unique history and elaborate holiday displays. Perrin suggests checking out the dazzling wreaths, lights and decorated evergreens at the annual Christmas at Biltmore Daytime Celebration. What's more, you can check out the intricate winning entries from a national gingerbread competition at the Omni Grove Park Inn, Perrin adds.

Beautiful sunrise over Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with flowers and bicycles on the bridge in spring.

For a winning mix of culture, history and modern allures, set your sights on Amsterdam for the holiday weekend. You can brush up on the past at the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum Foundation in Leiden, Holland, located near the Dutch capital. After getting a history lesson, visit world-class museums throughout Amsterdam, from the Van Gogh Museum to the Anne Frank House. If you don't mind chilly temperatures in the 40s, November also marks an enticing time to visit, given reduced crowds and plenty of flight and accommodation deals. Make the most of your trip by enjoying a canal-lined stroll and carving out some time to unwind in Vondelpark.

best city to visit during thanksgiving

The Big Island, Hawaii

"Hawaii is usually a really great deal in the fall," Perrin says. You can spend your days trekking through tropical rainforests, lounging on black sands at Punaluu Beach, exploring state parks and hiking captivating volcanoes. Catching sight of the fiery lava at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must, as is checking out a quintessential luau, snorkeling and admiring the views from Mauna Kea. With daytime temperatures in the high 60s to low 80s and low-priced accommodations (including resorts with kid-friendly amenities), November marks an ideal time to visit. Even better, you can feast on traditional Thanksgiving culinary offerings at resorts throughout the island.

Whistler ski resort.

Whistler, Canada

Whether you want to enjoy the early ski season – along with enticing gear and accommodation deals as well as faster lift lines – or you're looking to embrace Whistler 's still-pleasant temperatures in the 40s and 50s, you won't mind forgoing turkey for days on the slopes. The official ski season kicks off Nov. 23, and since Thanksgiving in Canada takes place in October, you won't have to worry about battling heavy crowds. Check out the charming pedestrian-only Village Stroll in Whistler Village, and pop into galleries, shops and restaurants to charge up for more adventurous cold-weather activities. When you're ready to get your heart racing, enjoy snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and other active pursuits.

Houses of Arlington Row in the village of Bibury, England

The Cotswolds, England

"The Cotswolds region in south-central England is beautiful any time of year, but arguably it's most picturesque in the fall, when the ivy blanketing its tiny towns and cottages turns brilliant red and yellow hues, and residents begin throwing logs in their stone fireplaces," Olander says. You won't miss home as you explore the area's striking walking trails, like the 102-mile long Cotswold Way National Trail, which weaves past beautiful hills, quaint villages and storied churches. "Restaurants here may not serve your family’s traditional Thanksgiving spread, but their home-cooked, often farm-to-table dishes hit the spot," Olander adds. What's more, there are plenty of affordable inns to pick from, making it easy to keep your budget intact.

Nauset Lighthouse in Cape Cod-Massachusetts at sunset

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Picture the Cape, and serene sands, clam shacks and shingled cottages likely come to mind. But while the warmer months offer an enticing beach break for East Coasters, the shoulder season offers its own draws: reduced crowds and attractive packages. If you can brave the crisp temperatures, with daytime highs in the 40s and 50s, you can enjoy a historic setting and traditional Thanksgiving meal, Perrin says. The peak foliage season will have wrapped up, but you can embrace peaceful surroundings. Immerse yourself in nature on one of the Cape's scenic trails along the Cape Cod National Seashore before refueling with clam chowder and unwinding in a budget-friendly bed-and-breakfast or inn.

Arizona Canal running through Scottsdale, Arizona.

Scottsdale, Arizona

For a warm-weather holiday break with desert scenery, high-end resorts and postcard-worthy landscapes, consider Scottsdale. You can indulge at a decadent spa (think: prickly pear and honey-infused body treatments), kick back in a poolside cabana or commune with nature and enjoy mountain biking and hiking at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. For more recreation, check out the nearby Camelback Mountain. After getting your adrenaline fix, refuel with a memorable meal at an acclaimed restaurant such as Virtù or Roaring Fork. Best of all, in late November, you'll avoid summer's scorching triple-digit temperatures and likely land a reasonably priced rate at a top resort before the peak winter season.

Ice cave is in the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull in Iceland.

"A trip to Iceland might not seem so practical in November, but if you don't mind being a bit cold, it's a perfect place to get away," Olander says. The low season ushers in dwindling crowds, discounted accommodation rates and the opportunity to explore Iceland's can't-miss cold-weather attractions, she explains. Highlights include soaking in the otherworldly Blue Lagoon, exploring icy glaciers and bar-hopping in Reykjavik. "And what could be more magical than catching the northern lights?" she adds, emphasizing that the winter months mark an ideal time to catch the natural phenomenon, as the skies are darkest and clearest. For more adventure, join the Golden Circle tour.

Colonial carriage at Williamsburg, Virginia

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Make the pilgrimage to Colonial Williamsburg, and you'll feel like you've stepped back in time, Perrin says. Learn about the country's revolutionary heritage with the "Come, Ye Thankful People Come" event at the Hennage Auditorium, when Cliff Williams and John Turner re-enactors recite Thanksgiving songs and hymns the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. If you have a sweet tooth, don't forget to pick up a pecan, apple, pumpkin, rum cream or apple-cranberry pie at Raleigh Tavern Bakery. For more of a history lesson, make your way to Jamestown to delight in Foods and Feasts of Colonial Virginia – a three-day extravaganza that recounts how traditional Revolution-era meals were prepped and other historical details.

Charleston, South Carolina, USA in the French Quarter.

Charleston, South Carolina

For a fun holiday weekend, flee to Charleston for an old-fashioned, all-American atmosphere, Perrin says. Temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s, ideal conditions for exploring can't-miss attractions and antebellum architecture throughout the city, from the Nathaniel Russell House to Magnolia Plantation & Gardens. Plus, you can delight in a memorable Thanksgiving meal at one of the city's acclaimed restaurants, she adds. When you're not enjoying a Spanish moss-canopied stroll or taking a horse-drawn carriage in the Historic District, you can pop into charming boutiques along King Street. Best of all, there are plenty of holiday happenings, including the annual Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park and the Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble 5K.

Potted plants in balcony of building at French Quarter, New Orleans

New Orleans

The Big Easy delivers more than jazz, blues, beignets, Sazeracs and stellar po'boys. You can join the fray in the French Quarter before feasting on a Cajun-inspired turkey day staple: turducken (a turkey stuffed with chicken and duck), typically paired with cornbread and gravy. For more holiday festivities, attend the Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And when you need a respite, meander through the Garden District. Already dreaming of a white Christmas? Admire the dazzling displays during the annual Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, when bright lights adorn hundreds of oaks throughout the park, beginning Nov. 24.

Skyscrapers of San Diego skyline with reflections and cloudscape.

Gorgeous weather year-round makes San Diego an alluring beach break at any time, Perrin says, but in autumn, tourist crowds and accommodation rates drop. And while the Southern Californian retreat may be more renowned as a microbrewery mecca and low-key surf town, it's easy to pull off a family-friendly holiday getaway – complete with beachside lounging, hiking at Torrey Pines and exploring Balboa Park – without busting your budget. For those looking to get into the Thanksgiving spirit, there are a variety of turkey trot 5K races and feasts throughout the city. At the famous Hotel del Coronado, for example, you can enjoy a pre-fixe Thanksgiving meal with live music.

The Duomo of Florence at Sunset - Italy

Florence, Italy

With low-season crowds (and prices), Europe's cultural meccas beckon to those looking for a world-class weekend getaway over the holiday, Perrin says. In Florence, you can check out world-renowned art institutions like the Uffizi Gallery without battling swarms of tourists. Plus, you can score tickets to top theater and opera performances. Even better, when you're not admiring iconic art, you can escape to the enchanting hills of Tuscany, leisurely sip distinguished bottles of Chianti and soak in the city's sophisticated restaurant and shopping scenes. And though you can expect chillier temperatures in the 40s and 50s, if you don't mind the crisp weather, you'll be rewarded with off-season hotel rates and shorter attraction lines.

Fountain in Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia.

Savannah, Georgia

With antebellum architecture, horse-drawn carriages, Spanish moss-lined streets and historical treasures, Savannah delivers on Southern charm. And in mid-November, you can take advantage of shoulder-season discounts, pleasant temperatures in the 50s to 70s and even a twinkling tree-lighting ceremony followed by the Boat Parade of Lights on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Take in more of the city's genteel charms on Black Friday as you explore the City Market, check out River Street or people-watch in photogenic Forsyth Park in the Historic District. What's more, over the long weekend, you can count on mouthwatering low country cuisine, from shrimp and grits at Cotton & Rye to biscuit buns and scones at Back in the Day Bakery.

Joshua Tree National Park in Palm Springs, California just before sunset.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

If you're itching to embrace the great outdoors over the holiday break, Joshua Tree National Park packs plenty of dry air, desert scenery and spectacular hikes, Perrin says. For postcard-worthy views, make your way to Keys View lookout. Fuss-free, frugal-minded vacationers seeking cost-effective accommodations may consider an Airstream (via Airbnb) at Kate's Lazy Desert near the park entrance, while campers can stake out a spot at one of the 44 sites at Hidden Valley Campground, which offers easy access to top trails. Best of all, the park's striking desert landscapes and two distinct ecosystems – the Colorado and the Mojave – are 140 miles west of Los Angeles. Skip shopping on Black Friday to join a ranger-led program or take a hike.

Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara's consistently pleasant temperatures in the mid-50s and upper 60s, reduced nightly room rates and mix of fashionable boutiques and acclaimed restaurants appeal to those craving an escape-it-all getaway far from the holiday stress back home. Grape-seekers can enjoy leisurely wine tastings and gallery-hopping at the Funk Zone, while shoppers stroll along State Street to stock up on holiday presents. When you're not attending a yoga class, you can enjoy strolls along the harbor in the dubbed "American Riviera" before delighting in a farm-to-table meal at an acclaimed dining institution such as Brophy Bros, The Lark or Opal Restaurant & Bar.

Whether you want to explore ornate palaces, catch an opera or peruse an elaborate Christmas market, Austria's cosmopolitan capital is a great choice for the holiday weekend, Perrin says. After all, you won't miss stuffing or Black Friday shopping as you savor roasted chestnuts, seasonal delights and handcrafted goods beneath twinkling lights at the Viennese Christmas Market outside City Hall. A number of Christmas markets and cultural happenings take place throughout Thanksgiving weekend, Perrin adds. The Viennnese Christmas market begins on Nov. 18, and the Christmas Village Belvedere Palace begins on Nov. 24. And while temperatures dip, if you can brave the 30- and 40-degree temperatures, you can score reasonably priced accommodations in November.

Portas do Sol in Lisbon, Portugal.

Lisbon, Portugal

While Lisbon lures travelers with its bargain-friendly rates and affordable attractions year-round, in fall you can embrace thinning crowds and comfortable temperatures lingering in the 50s and 70s through the end of November. Visit Alfalma to admire in the city's elaborate tile-laden sidewalks. Next, make the pilgrimage to postcard-worthy Sintra to admire picturesque villas and palaces along the hilly cobblestone streets. When you're ready to refuel, savor an authentic Portuguese meal followed by a pasteis de nata – a sweet custard pastry and an enticing alternative to pumpkin pie. At the end of the day, retire to one of Lisbon's affordable boutique hotels or take in iconic fado music in the Alfalma district.

Along the cliff walk in Newport, RI, there are some spectacular residential buildings open for the public to enjoy.

Newport, Rhode Island

For an idyllic New England getaway with coastal scenery and fall colors, plan your escape to Newport. While temperatures can dip into the 30s, you can take advantage of thinning tourist crowds and plenty of pampering. At the enchanting Castle Hill Inn, there's an elaborate Thanksgiving spread – complete with littleneck clams, turkey and pie. Plus, with the Thanksgiving Package promotion, you can enjoy a two-night stay, a Thanksgiving feast, breakfast and afternoon tea – along with a half bottle of Cabernet – at a fixed rate. For more activity, check out the shops along Thames Street and take a brisk stroll along the Cliff Walk trail before warming up by a crackling fire at The Chanler.

Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach.

Miami Beach

Celebrate the long weekend with some quality time catching up on R & R by the pool, the beach or at top shopping meccas on a sunny escape to Miami Beach. Thanks to swift recovery efforts following Hurricane Irma, major hotels, resorts, museums, nightlife venues and shops are open for business. Whether you want to check out striking art deco buildings on Ocean Drive, rent a beach chair on South Beach or simply stay put in a cabana at your hotel, there are plenty of ways to unwind and dodge the holiday routine (and countless hours of meal prep). What's more, you can embrace an American feast and celebrate the holiday at acclaimed restaurants without lifting a finger. At StripSteak by Michael Mina at Fontainebleau Miami Beach, for example, you can enjoy holiday staples such as glazed carrots and roasted turkey.

USA, Virginia, Richmond, Cityscape at evening

Richmond, Virginia

With its storied sites, Southern charm and burgeoning culinary scene, Richmond is an enticing Thanksgiving escape for foodies, culture vultures, history lovers and outdoorsy types alike. Along with trendy art- and design-centric hotels like the Quirk Hotel, there are plenty of opportunities to embrace the great outdoors. Cross the James River to Belle Isle for a memorable bike ride or picnic, or enjoy blazing fall colors in Shenandoah National Park (about 90 miles west of Richmond off Interstate 64). And if you opt for a history-filled vacation, get a sense of Richmond's genteel attractions like the Jefferson Hotel and the Valentine Museum. When you're ready to refuel, enjoy traditional Southern cuisine – including fried chicken and biscuits with sausage gravy – at The Roosevelt.

Portland Head lighthouse on the rocky coastline of Maine at sunrise,

Portland, Maine

For a mix of requisite New England charm and history, it's hard to match Portland. You can admire the area's craggy coastlines, Victorian homes and picturesque Portland Head Light before retracing pilgrims' footsteps and heading to Popham Colony, an early American settlement that some believe was formed in 1607, before Plymouth Rock in 1620. Set along the Kennebunk River, approximately 25 miles northeast of Portland, the colony features a boulder with the sign "Popham Rock." For modern allures, base yourself in Portland and retreat to the Press Hotel before enjoying a leisurely meal. The Holy Donut and the Highroller Lobster Co. are a couple of must-visit eateries. Cap off your feast with a pub crawl in the East Bayside neighborhood.

Walking west past the end of Horseshoe Bay in Bermuda the large beach ends and we find amazing rock formations with pockets of pink coral sand as seen in this Kite Aerial view.

Pink-hued sands, world-renowned golf courses and captivating oceanfront scenery offer the perfect antidote to the holiday grind. And while the weather in this mid-Atlantic island will be chillier at this time of year, with daytime temperatures hovering in the 60s and 70s, you'll be rewarded with reduced accommodation rates. Whether you want to explore unspoiled coral reefs, hit the links at Port Royal Golf Course or enjoy leisurely strolls in historic St. George – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – you'll be grateful for some time in the sun rather than making the pilgrimage to your in-laws' house. What's more, you can enjoy duty-free shopping or pampering at the spa before savoring a traditional rum-infused cocktail and delicious Bermudian culinary specialties (sampling traditional fish chowder is a must).

The city of London at sunset.

In November, London draws visitors with its festive Christmas markets, mild daytime temperatures, colorful autumn foliage and enticing flight and hotel deals ahead of the peak winter tourist season. If you're a history buff, you can catch the acclaimed hit musical "Hamilton" at Victoria Palace Theatre throughout November. What's more, culture seekers can explore can't-miss institutions such as the National Gallery, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. For more time outdoors, explore lively Borough Market or meander to Notting Hill's Portobello Road Market to pick up vintage gifts and classic English antiques. For more world-class shopping, head to Oxford Street. And if you're feeling nostalgic for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, you'll find quintessential American trimmings like pumpkin pie and roasted turkey at top restaurants throughout the city.

Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis, Maryland

With striking coastal scenery along the Chesapeake Bay, delicious blue crabs and crisp autumn air, Annapolis offers a refreshing change of scenery. Admire the colonial architecture and cobblestone streets in Historic Annapolis before grabbing a bite at one of the area's fine dining establishments (Cantler's Riverside Inn, O'Learys Seafood Restaurant and Chick & Ruth's Delly are longstanding crowd-pleasers). And on Black Friday, after you stroll along the city's charming brick streets, peruse the boutique shops and galleries along Main Street in Historic Annapolis to pick up a few holiday gifts. Afterward, visit Dock Street in Ego Alley to people-watch on a bench, grab a bite to eat and admire the sailboats bobbing in the water.

So, put away Grandma’s pumpkin pie recipe , break out those weekenders , and fire up your out of office. We’ve combed all of the USA to find 15 of the best places to go for Thanksgiving. Where are you headed?

Bend, Oregon

mt bachelor reflecting in todd lake bend, oregon

300 days of sunshine make this picturesque, small city on the Deschutes River a favorite of outdoor adventure lovers. But aside from exploring the high desert and the Cascades Range, there’s also a dozen craft breweries to sample, plus top-quality art museums and galleries. Hotel Signature Bend is an affordable, yet uber-chic spot to post up for the holiday.

Asheville, North Carolina

heavenly light

This charming city in the Blue Ridge Mountains has long been known for its bucket-list breweries, thriving art scene, stunning drives, hikes, and Biltmore, America’s largest home , built by George Vanderbilt. The late fall is an ideal time to visit: temperatures are mild, the travel rates are the best of the year, and it’s easier than any other season to land hard-to-get restaurant reservations, with plenty of outdoor seating available for those looking for it. Snag a room at Kimpton’s Hotel Arras , a 128-room boutique hotel that's perfectly located downtown so you can easily stroll to the area's many breweries, but has a romantic outdoor bar with a fire table so couples who prefer cocktails can say in. If you are in town for the microbrews, don't skip the pumpkin ale at Catawba or the taco truck at Rabbit, Rabbit .

Branson, Missouri

If holiday cheer is your thing, there's probably nowhere better in the country to get your fix than Branson. The destination is even known as America’s Christmas Tree City, with over 1,700 trees that are already sparkling starting at the beginning of November. Bring the wilderness indoors with a stay at Big Cedar Lodge , which features on-site fishing and five golf courses. They’ll also be hosting their annual Tom Turkey scavenger hunt the day after Thanksgiving: families get to explore the whole property while hunting for clues.

Texas Hill Country

Texans have a special place in their heart for this region, which stretches over the central and southern portions of the state. It’s not hard to see why: there are beautiful rolling hills, bubbling spring-fed rivers, and of course, some of the best barbecue in the whole country . The entire family will be happy at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa , which is located just 20 minutes outside of Austin. The 4,000 acres are perfect for social distancing, and amenities include seven restaurants, four golf courses (plus mini for the kids!), and s’mores served every night at sunset.

Hudson, New York

Sometimes dubbed “Brooklyn North,” this vibrant city in the state’s Hudson Valley is beloved for its phenomenal farm-to-table restaurants, hip art galleries and furniture stores, and easy access to the region’s many hiking trails, including the 736-acre Greenport Conservation Area . Design-loving couples will dig newly opened The Maker Hotel , which features 11 rooms fitted with velvet throws and local art, as well as a restaurant housed inside a glass conservatory.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

While this town may be best known for its skiing, its close proximity to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks truly makes it ideal for anyone who loves natural beauty. The late-fall “shoulder season” is an ideal time to visit: the weather is dry, the National Parks are still open but without the crowds, and you might even get to see the yearly elk bugling (Google it). Book a stay at The Lodge at Jackson Hole , which boasts an all-season indoor-outdoor pool, plus chic rooms outfitted in a classic Western style.

Palm Springs, California

November is an ideal time to visit this colorful city in the Sonoran Desert, where temperatures hover in the high 70s and there is zero rainfall. Spend your days ogling midcentury modern architecture, hiking in stunning Joshua Tree National Park, or taking a high-flying ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway . For an adults-only escape, look into the affordable and design-forward Villa Royale , but families will love the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells , which includes two new dueling 30-foot waterslides and a 450-foot lazy river.

San Diego, California

Located on the Pacific coast and absolutely crammed with beaches, picture-perfect parks, and some of the best Mexican restaurants north of the border, it’s little wonder this city is popular with everyone from families, to retirees, to honeymooners. After a visit to the world-class San Diego Zoo , catch some zzz's at the eco-friendly Pearl Hotel in Point Loma, or the Pendry San Diego , which boasts five separate dining spaces.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

There is no passport necessary for this Caribbean getaway. While the whole island is full of beautiful beaches, intriguing tropical forests, and historical sites, the perfect base is the capital city of San Juan. There, you can not only explore the romantic streets of Old San Juan, but access the dreamy sands of Condado and Isla Verde beaches. Stay at the centrally located Condado Vanderbilt Hotel , a recently restored resort originally built in 1919. Holiday programming includes gingerbread cookie decorating for the kids, and how to make the island-favorite mojito cocktail for adults.

South County, Rhode Island

Newport may be the most well-known getaway in Rhode Island, but don’t sleep on the South County area. Enclaves like Watch Hill and Weekapaug offer tranquil ocean views, superb seafood (don’t miss the Rhode Island-favorite stuffies ), and plenty of water activities like boating and fishing. Book a stay at the family-friendly Weekapaug Inn or at The Break Hotel in Narragansett for a chic, beach house-vibe. And for a special holiday treat, visit Ocean House’s Fondue Village , which will transport you to Switzerland for an afternoon.

South Walton, Florida

Located on the state’s splendid Gulf Coast, South Walton is a peaceful and relatively under-the-radar locale that’s ideal for Thanksgiving getaways. The area’s 16 beach towns were all purposely built to be less dense than other Floridian beaches, plus 40 percent of the land here is preserved, making for over 200 miles of hiking and biking trails. Spend your holiday at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Resort & Spa , which is perched directly on the white sands of the Gulf of Mexico. Two pools, family suites with bunk beds, and an affordable rate will make for a (hopefully) stress-free Thanksgiving.

Traverse City, Michigan

The late fall is a wonderful time to visit this city “Up North” on the shores of Lake Michigan: There’s generally enough snow to ski or snowshoe, but it’s also temperate enough to explore the charming town. Visitors can also take advantage of a number of seasonal promotions , which offers discounted rates on hotels, as well as a savings on dining, wineries, and shopping. Spend the night at Tamarack Lodge , which has the feel of an old-school grand lodge and is located right on the shores of East Grand Traverse Bay.

Tucson, Arizona

Another sun-drenched city, Tucson has a whopping 350 days of sunshine a year, not to mention some of the best stargazing in the country and hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails. But, if nature isn’t your thing, Tucson was also named the first UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2015, which basically means you can’t go wrong with any restaurant in town. There's no shortage of accommodations—rent an Airbnb or heck out newly-opened The Tuxon for your holiday getaway, a modern boutique hotel in the heart of the city.

Litchfield County, Connecticut

There are few places more beautiful in the fall than New England, and none may be as picturesque as this lush area of northwestern Connecticut. Located an easy driving distance from many East Coast cities, it’s famed for its rolling hills, charming towns, and loads of historical sites. Gilmore Girls fans also know it as the bucolic setting for the show, and the Mayflower Inn & Spa as the inspiration for The Independence Inn, where Lorelai worked in early seasons.

Williamsburg, Virginia

This historic pocket of Virginia between the York and James Rivers may be best known for Colonial Williamsburg , but there are plenty of other activities in the area if you’re not a Revolutionary War buff. Artisanal breweries and distilleries abound, the Williamsburg Premium Outlets are a perfect way to jumpstart holiday shopping, and scenic hikes like the Powhatan Creek Trail are peaceful this time of year. The Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection is an ideal place to stay for Thanksgiving.

Turkey Day travel: the 10 best places to visit for Thanksgiving

best city to visit during thanksgiving

Here’s a thought: you don’t have to spend Thanksgiving at home . Chances are, much of the family will need to travel to meet up anyway. So why not try somewhere new ? The best places to visit for Thanksgiving don’t even have to be in the US. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate like they are!

According to KAYAK data , year on year domestic Thanksgiving airfares have dropped by 7% , while international fares are up 4%. Hotel demand is up with domestic hotel prices up 7%. International hotel prices have plummeted though, down 19% year on year.

All this means Thanksgiving is actually a great time to travel , despite how busy it can get . It’s already a long weekend and so is an easy way to maximize holiday time . It means no one has to spend the day slaving at the stove cooking the family feast . And it works just as well if you’re solo, looking for romance or with the entire multigenerational family. Happy holidays.

Thanksgiving vacation ideas for families

Center city Philadelphia. Elfreth's Alley street in the winter, covered with white snow.

Holiday trivia: Philadelphia’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the oldest in the US . Started in 1920, it also strives to be the “most band friendly.” That means 19 bands featuring 90-plus members will march and play their way along the Ben Franklin Parkway .

Expect lots of music, performances, giant floats and balloons, and appearances from celebrities you haven’t heard of. After the parade, make for LOVE Park to continue the festivities at the just-opened Christmas Village .

As family-friendly as it gets , let the kids loose to explore the vintage theme park and alleys of wooden stalls. Adults can warm up with mulled wine and bratwurst for a less traditional, German-themed Thanksgiving. And remember: this is Philly in November, so dress warm.

Long Beach, California

If a freezing family isn’t the kind of festive feeling you’re after, head west. En route, pick up some costumes for the family so you can all participate in the Long Beach Turkey Trot .

Usually held the Sunday before Thanksgiving , there’s a one-mile children’s race and six-mile adult race. Both are great fun, with plenty of people dressing up for good causes . It’s also a great excuse to then overindulge in the upcoming Thanksgiving Day feast.

Spend the rest of the week enjoying city and coastal attractions. In particular, don’t miss a whale watching tour . It’s peak time for the Gray Whale migration, so you can see them up close.

Sagamore Resort, Adirondacks, New York

Happy couple waiting in the lounge of a luxury hotel resort

To take the effort out of celebrating, my pick for the best all-inclusive resort for Thanksgiving is Sagamore Resort . This 139-year-old Grand Dame is unadulterated Americana .

In November, its forested environment is a panoply of fall colors . Lake George shimmers below pink-hued skies and the hotel is aglow with cozy fires and holiday cheer . Its four-day Thanksgiving schedule testifies as much.

Nightly bonfires with s’mores and live music . Decadent spreads in the ballroom for Thanksgiving meals. Giant screenings of the Macy’s Day Parade, major football games and family movie marathons. Christmas tree lighting and horseback riding. Thanksgiving, served up on a silver platter .

Eden Roc Cap Cana, Dominican Republic

A beautiful couple having drinks and relaxing on a sun lounger in an infinity pool.

Willing to brave holiday season travel ? Eden Roc Cap Cana is just a short hop from the mainland to an island paradise Thanksgiving . And boy, do they take their holidays here seriously .

The five-day program bleeds every drop out of Thanksgiving, while making the most of the resort’s epic location . Dress up as, search for, learn to cook, and of course eat, all the turkey you can handle. Burn off the calories with beachside family fitness and sunset yoga. Align the senses with meditation and spa sessions.

Or just retreat to the beach with a cocktail and a good book and let the whole thing wash over you.

Nassau, The Bahamas

A picturesque lighthouse stands proudly at the end of a long sandy island, surrounded by the blue sea, all under the embrace of the cloudy blue sky.

Learn more: Nassau travel guide

Just because it’s late November, doesn’t mean you have to spend Thanksgiving freezing your celebrations off. There are plenty of warm places to visit and indulge your holiday spirit. Close enough for a quick trip, hot enough for a decent tan, the Bahamas is a great bet.

While it doesn’t officially celebrate Thanksgiving, there are still plenty of celebrations to be had. Swap the traditional Thanksgiving Day Parade for an equally colorful neighborhood Junkanoo . For absolute luxury and a healthy dose of commercialism, Baha Mar in Nassau is your go to. Stay at the SLS , have Thanksgiving dinner at the Rosewood and take the kids to the Grand Hyatt .

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Beachfront urban setting with a white building and neighbouring structures surrounded by trees.

Learn more: Montego Bay travel guide

Montego Bay has two sides. There’s the city itself: a frantic slice of Jamaican life brimming with attitude and action. Then there’s the glossy tourist paradise : five-star resorts dotted along the coastline away from the mania of the city. There is, however, only one temperature: hot .

It’s always hot in the city. Nowhere more so than Hip Strip , where cruise ship passengers mix with locals in beachfront bars like the infamous Margaritaville . Thanksgiving Day is, as you might expect, busy.

For something altogether more chill , head to one of the plush resorts around Ironshore to the north. Or take a short hop along the coast to Louca Bay and the newly refurbished Grand Palladium .

Punta Mita, Mexico

White umbrellas with chairs reflected on the pool's water surface facing the sea.

If you’re going to make a beach the center of your Thanksgiving getaway, you may as well pick a beauty . Spread across 1,500 acres of a tiny peninsula half way down Mexico’s west coast, Punta Mita fits the bill.

Previously an idyll that shared its sleepy pueblo , golf courses and beaches with a Four Seasons and a St. Regis . This year sees the Susurros del Corazón open to make it a triumvirate of luxury. Head there for adventure and romance with surf safaris and candlelit meals on the beach. Or splurge with the whole family on a beachfront casa and make it one to remember.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Three male surfers carrying their boards after surfing, walking towards the shore against the dramatic sky.

Inject a dose of Pura Vida into your Thanksgiving on the beaches of northwest Costa Rica. The biodiverse region of Guanacaste is famed for its ethereal black sand beaches .

Playa Negra and Playa Carbon , not far from the buzzing town of Tamarindo , are particularly magical. Tropical jungle backdrops, big rolling waves and hundreds of colorful bird species .A couple of hours south the beaches begin to lighten but are no less impressive. Stop off at Ostional Wildlife Refuge to see arribadas (mass nestings) of Olive Ridley, Leatherback and Pacific Green sea turtles .

Continue south and book a room at the laid back Harmony Hotel set a few steps down sandy tracks to peaceful Playa Guiones . Laze, surf and horseback ride yourself into a state of total relaxation.

Discover Iceland

A person dressed in a golden cardigan sits on rocks, gazing out at the breathtaking view of Jökulsárlón lake, with chunks of floating ice scattered across the serene blue water.

Want to escape Thanksgiving completely? Iceland is about as far away from roast turkey and street parades as you can get without leaving the planet. Remote wildernesses, wild beaches, towering waterfalls and the slow drift of ice everywhere.

It’s almost like Iceland was designed with solo travel in mind . It’s compact enough to explore on a one-person road trip yet it’s tailor made for organized experiences. Base yourself in Reykjavik and pick your adventure – after all, you’ve no one to please !

Feel the heat of bubbling lava on a visit to an active volcano . Ride dog sleighs over ice tracks to explore airplane carcasses. Dive crystal waters between tectonic plates. And let the memories cultivate as you soak in luminous blue thermal waters . The perfect way to give thanks (to yourself).

Take a fine wine tour across Arizona

A male biker traversing the narrow trail on a rugged hilly terrain head towards an imposing rock formation.

Thanksgiving is steeped in tradition . One of the best things about spending it alone is that you can create your own , new traditions. If you like your wine, joining a wine tour is a lovely way to spend a day or three. Luckily, the US has plenty to choose from .

On the west coast, Napa Valley and Sonoma County are your obvious go-tos. It’s easy to pass time in its rolling vine-laden landscape, sipping and tasting , eating and relaxing. My pick is Arizona, however. Get your wine trail passport with tours of Willcox and Sonoita , or in the Verde Valley to the north.

Friends gathered around a table filled with delicious food, raising their wine glasses in a joyful toast.

There is no magic formula for when to book to get the best deals on flights and hotels for Thanksgiving. Based on data from KAYAK, most people traveling domestically in the US will do so the day before Thanksgiving – November 22, 2023. The cheapest day before Thanksgiving to travel domestically will be November 20th, with an average airfare of $448.

If you’re traveling internationally, the busiest day for travel will be November 18th. The cheapest day to travel, however, will be the 21st, with average airfares of $923. If you’re in doubt, try the KAYAK Best Time To Travel tool to help find a great price based on your destination and travel dates.

Prepare ahead of time. If you’re going to travel, don’t pack too much. Keep your celebrations authentic to the place you visit rather than bringing them home with you. If you’re cooking a big family dinner while abroad, make sure you can get all the ingredients you’ll need there. Otherwise (if it’s viable) you can take them with you.

Methodology: KAYAK considered flight, hotel and rental car searches between 2/10/2023 – 8/9/2023 for travel between 11/17/2023 – 11/26/2023. For year over year comparative data, searches between 2/11/2022 – 8/10/2022 and travel between 11/18/2023 – 11/27/2022 were considered. Prices are on average, are in USD and are subject to change.

10 Great Places to Visit for Thanksgiving

  • Metropolitan State University

  • Sustainable Fashion
  • Art & Media

There's something to be said for a stereotypical Thanksgiving experience: a big meal with family, some football on TV, maybe a little bit of shopping after the turkey wears off. But what about taking advantage of the long holiday weekend to travel? Whether you want to make a family trip an annual Thanksgiving tradition or you just want to do something different this year, there are plenty of places that are great destinations for the holiday.

These places still mark the day with turkey dinners and harvest decorations, and many hold parades or holiday-related events. So even if you decide to hit the road this year, you won't miss the Thanksgiving-related celebration entirely — unless you want to.

Tropical Thanksgiving in St. Augustine, Florida

In most of the country, the temperature is cold on Thanksgiving, so a vacation in a warm weather destination is compelling. St. Augustine, on Florida's East Coast, not far from Jacksonville, certainly fits the warm-weather bill. Some historians say the first feast shared by European settlers and Native Americans took place when Spanish explorers were fed by members of the Timucua tribe five decades before a similar party took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Whether you want to enter the "who had the first Thanksgiving" debate or not, St. Augustine is a worthwhile November destination. Its downtown boasts a historic ambiance, there are plenty of accommodations right along the beach, and the best local restaurants put on a Thanksgiving Day spread, although reservations usually are required.

Island Thanksgiving in Hawaii

During peak vacation times, Hawaii's resorts and hotels are very crowded, and that is why a Thanksgiving vacation in the 50th state is worthwhile. November is one of the slowest months for tourism on the islands . Yes, Thanksgiving week does bring an uptick in the number of arrivals from the mainland, but outside of the main areas like Waikiki, it is still relatively quiet. And quieter means cheaper. Thanksgiving hotel rates are at least $100 lower, on average, than the prices for the same rooms over the Christmas/New Year stretch.

Besides the cheap hotels and quiet atmosphere, Hawaii hosts some interesting events during Thanksgiving week. The Maui Invitational college basketball tournament is a big draw, while the Vans World Cup of Surfing is held on Oahu's legendary North Shore during and after Thanksgiving (depending on conditions). Holiday travelers who stay near the coast on Maui may catch a glimpse of humpback whales, who migrate through the area in November.

Midwestern Thanksgiving in Chicago

Like New York City, Chicago has a huge menu of Thanksgiving options. One reason to opt for a vacation in this Midwestern metropolis: Many of the weekend's biggest attractions are free. In addition to the Christmas tree lighting on Thanksgiving Eve and a parade on downtown's State Street on Thursday, Millennium Park has holiday celebrations, decorations and ice skating.

Few places are better on Black Friday than downtown's so-called Magnificent Mile, at least for window shopping. The city's museums, such as the Chicago Institute of Art, are open on Friday to provide an alternative to the retail rush.

Living history Thanksgiving in Plymouth

The story of the origin of Thanksgiving takes place in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Thanksgiving traditions can be traced back to a colonial-era narrative that was set here. Today, the Plimoth Plantation , a replica 17th century town, celebrates Plymouth's place in American and Thanksgiving history. The town also has a replica of the Mayflower and a native American home site. These places are heavily invested in providing a living history experience to visitors. Actors in period costumes (pictured) can be seen on the streets of Plymouth itself and in the aforementioned sites.

Holiday travelers can certainly choose to spend the whole weekend in Plymouth, or they can take their history-themed vacation to nearby Boston to tour important colonial era sites like Faneuil Hall and the State House.

Big city Thanksgiving in New York

It might seem like a bit of a cliche to travel to New York City for Thanksgiving , but there is so much going on during the long weekend that it is always going to be a destination worth considering. The list of possibilities is almost endless: the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, shopping in Midtown Manhattan, eating Thanksgiving dinner at one of the city's restaurants, ice skating in Rockefeller Plaza.

Best of all, all the usual New York attractions are still there, so while everyone else is focused on shopping, parades and ice skating, you can visit the museums (a few are open on Thanksgiving, and all are open on the weekend), stroll through Central Park or head to Staten Island's Greenbelt Nature Center to take part in the annual 2.5-mile Day After Thanksgiving Hike .

Ski Thanksgiving in Tahoe

For ski and snowboard enthusiasts, the long Thanksgiving weekend is the perfect time to hit the slopes for the first time during the season. From Colorado to California, ski resorts open up during the second half of November. Many have enough snowfall that they don't need to rely on artificially made snow by this time of year.

Lake Tahoe is an ideal destination for an early season ski vacation. Resorts like Squaw Valley and Heavenly have plenty of snow on the ground by Thanksgiving. After spending time on the slopes, skiers can head to one of the restaurants near the lake for a turkey dinner.

Southwestern Thanksgiving in Santa Fe

Santa Fe is not a traditional Thanksgiving destination, but people who love art, food and history will enjoy a stay here. The heart of the Southwestern art scene is in Santa Fe, so gallery visits and stops at places like the Winter Indian Market (open every weekend after Thanksgiving Day) are all-but-required for art-loving tourists. Thanksgiving is also opening weekend at Ski Santa Fe, the local ski resort, which is located outside of the city.

Santa Fe also has an exciting dining scene. You might not be able to find much in the way of traditional turkey dinners, but there are skilled and creative chefs in the city who create delicious Southwestern takes on the traditional meals.

Vineyard Thanksgiving in Napa Valley

Many wineries in Napa Valley are closed on Thanksgiving, but the Napa Wine Train is operating for both lunch and dinner, and tasting rooms reopen early on Friday. The crowds are rather light in the valley during this time of year even though the autumn colors are quite beautiful.

The city of Yountville has a holiday celebration on the day after Thanksgiving. It includes lighting displays throughout the town, live music, wine tasting and carriage rides. Napa, meanwhile, has its own Christmas parade on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving cruise

Hurricane season is winding down in the Caribbean, so late November is an ideal time to go on a cruise, especially if you can extend the four-day weekend into a week or two of vacation time.

Most large ships will serve Thanksgiving dinner to mark the holiday. Some boats, such as Disney Cruise’s new Fantasy, will actually have Thanksgiving-themed trips . Fantasy's Thanksgiving Very MerryTime cruise will depart from Florida at the beginning of Thanksgiving week. The Royal Princess, from the Princess Cruises fleet, will take a more subtle approach, decorating the ship with Thanksgiving and autumn accents.

Texas Thanksgiving in San Antonio

San Antonio is a great place to enjoy Thanksgiving celebrations that have a unique flair. The city's downtown Riverwalk area is lit with holiday lights and a boat parade takes place on the water on the day after Thanksgiving. During the parade, more than two dozen illuminated barges make their way slowly down the river. There is live music and appearances by local celebrities. Some restaurants along the water offer dinner packages during the parade.

To provide an alternative to shopping on Black Friday, the San Antonio Museum of Art holds a "free day" on the day after Thanksgiving. Other area attractions such as Seaworld San Antonio host holiday-themed celebrations as well.

20 Wallet-Friendly Places to Spend Thanksgiving This Year

By ellen gutoskey | nov 9, 2021.

Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia.

Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from a cramped section of Midtown Manhattan sidewalk may be the quintessential Turkey Day experience, but a trip to the Big Apple during the holidays certainly isn’t the cheapest option.

If you’re looking to spend Thanksgiving away this year, there are plenty of festive cities that won’t put quite so much strain on your bank account. And after evaluating the 100 most populous U.S. cities across 20 metrics, WalletHub has determined that Atlanta, Georgia, is your overall best bet. Not only did it rank first for most Thanksgiving events and most holiday decorations shops per capita, it also came in third for highest giving ratio (which factored in volunteer opportunities, share of income donated to charity, and more) and best weather forecast. In short, Atlanta knows what Thanksgiving is all about and celebrates it with gusto.

When it comes to the winningest state, however, Florida takes the cake. Three of its cities—Orlando, Miami, and Tampa—finished in the top 10. If you’re mainly looking to gallivant about pumpkin patches, head to Miami: It has more patches per capita than any other city in the South. If Florida’s excessive humidity isn’t to your liking, Arizona might be your ideal Thanksgiving getaway. It has three rather hidden gems in the top 20: Scottsdale in third place, Gilbert in 11th, and Chandler in 17th.

The list also challenges the assumption that New England, known for its colonial history and enviable fall foliage , is an unbeatable region to visit for Thanksgiving. No New England city made the top 20, though Boston did take 32nd place.

You can see how the top 20 cities scored (out of 100 total points) below, and read more about the study here .

  • Atlanta, Georgia // 71.05
  • Orlando, Florida // 66.43
  • Scottsdale, Arizona // 66.42

  • Raleigh, North Carolina // 62.29
  • Virginia Beach, Virginia // 61.64
