Portland Freedom Trail

Location: Portland Region: Greater Portland & Casco Bay Activity: Self-Guided Walking Tour

An immersive way to see and learn about Maine’s African American history is to follow the Portland Freedom Trail, which wends through downtown Portland for about two miles through downtown Portland.

The Portland Freedom Trail is a self-guided tour through some of Portland’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. The Trail will take you to important sites in African American history, specifically those dealing with 19th-century Black Mainers who stood in the vanguard of the fight against slavery.

By the early 19th century, Portland had a small, vital African American population. Black Mainers were raising families and running small businesses. Many worked in maritime trades as sailors, longshoremen and fishermen. As the country was roiled by the question of slavery, African Americans in Maine became leaders in the anti-slavery movement, founding and leading local organizations. They were also conductors in the local Underground Railroad, spiriting formerly enslaved people through Maine to freedom in places like Canada.

Included on the Freedom Trail is the Abyssinian Meeting House , the third-oldest African-American meeting house that survives in America; Mariners’ Church, which once held an anti-slavery bookshop; and sections of Portland’s waterfront, where local African Americans worked to move the formerly enslaved along the Underground Railroad. Also on the trail is the home of Elias and Elizabeth Widgery Thomas, located at 53 India Street, which was known as a safe house for fugitive slaves, and the home of Charles Frederick Eastman, a conductor on the Underground Railroad, is located near the Abyssinian Meeting House.

The markers for the Portland Freedom Trail were designed and created by Daniel Minter , a Portland contemporary artist. In 2019, Minter co-founded the Indigo Arts Alliance , cultivating the work of African American artists. The gallery is located on Cove St.

Portland Black History Tour

Trace the steps of the Black Portlanders who moved our city, state, and country closer to the ideals of freedom, democracy, opportunity, and equality.

Maine’s earliest settlements couldn’t have existed without Black labor, skill, and insight — and since those first moments, Black Yankees have agitated and organized to resist indignity and realize power. They founded Maine communities, overturned slavery statewide, drove our maritime industries, and crossed color boundaries.

Walking tour is 2 hours long and 1.5 miles. It’s offered Daily April 1 – November 9, 2024. And it’s amazing.

Like, it’ll blow your mind.

  • 46merediths 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles History Gem We’re locals, and tickets for this tour were gifted to me and my husband. I’m so glad, because we may not have found it on our own. The tour was so fascinating. I highly recommend for both tourists and locals. Thanks for an awesome tour, Dugan! Read more Written April 14, 2024
  • dleewilloughby 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Well Done Sir! Duggan and his wife have a very nice tour business. The instructions/information about the tour were sent ahead of time. (Also a Liability Waiver to sign...so smart!) The instructions were thorough with a sense of humor thrown in. The tour was paced just right with enough time at stops. Duggan has a great wit and a firm grasp of the history of Portland, which I believe is his home town. Additionally, he always had time for questions. What I thought would be a rather boring port of call, was made interesting and enjoyable! Read more Written November 19, 2023
  • Parker_An_Icon 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Who knew???? Where do I start????? Dugan was TRULY AMAZING!!! He was so knowledgeable and passionate about the Black Experience in Portland, I truly had no idea. I kept asking him to repeat himself.. I was taking ssssoooo many notes!!!!! 😂😂 I should have recorded him.. he was EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Smart!!! He has truly done his research. He was dropping so much history, I felt as though I needed to research more history of the Black Experience in the north. No matter what part of the world we are in, you will always find Black History. The gems Dugan was dropping from the past are still relevant today!!! Thank you for seeing us!🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎. Taking his time to show the relevance of the Black Experience meant a lot to my sweetie and I. Thank you Dugan!!!!! We will be back!!! By the way… The Highroller… Good Choice!!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 Read more Written November 19, 2023

Dugan took our group all around the historical places in Portland yesterday and was incredibly knowledgeable and funny and made this walk most enjoyable. I learned a lot about Portland that I never before knew and Dugan made this learning fun. Everyone in our group of around 16 people loved this tour and strongly recommend Dugan for a very informative fun filled tour of Portland. Read more Written October 16, 2023
  • LindaR157 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Loved Portland by the Foot's Black History Tour! We loved this tour! Unlike another walking tour we did in Boston, Dugan hasn't just memorized facts, but he is PASSIONATE about the history of Portland, and specifically about the Black history of Portland. During our tour, one of the other couples who joined had information on a gentleman not often mentioned in the history books, but who Dugan has been collecting information about. It was so much fun watching a true historian corroborate information and collect new facts with such pure joy. The tour proved to be a great introduction to the city, while also teaching us about the many significant contributions (and suffering) by the Black residents of Portland over the past few centuries. Dugan is witty, kind, and crazy smart. For those who might be wary that a "Black history" tour might get political, Dugan just stuck to the facts - there was nothing in the tour that was divisive. It would be a great way to spend the day as a family (probably tweens and older would have a great time), even if everyone doesn't see eye to eye on our polarized political discussions. We HIGHLY recommend doing one of Portland by the Foot's tours - It was truly eye-opening and entertaining at the same time! Read more Written October 15, 2023

  • Y4100ZNevanc 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Dugan is a Natural! Dugan's passion for the history of Portland is infectious! He shared stories puzzling and shocking, absurd and impactful, terrible and thought provoking. I am a Portland Resident and learned a ton that I had never heard about. The stories and information were engaging and detailed. The description of this tour ends with the long list of prehaps-taboo subject that will be covered, but the tour is done in the spirit of honesty and understanding, not sensationalism. I brough my 9yo and 11yo sons, and some of the subject matter was a lot for them, but they were captivated. I certainly plan to check in with them on what they heard. Dogan did a wonderful job connecting the events of Portland with the complicated history of our Country. Read more Written September 26, 2023

Having never been to the city, or Maine, it was a great way to get an historical overview of the city’s important African American figures and cultural heritage. Dugan really knows his stuff. He made it fun & informative, full of tidbits of background info not commonly known, and presenting these stories with humor and style. Having become big Dugan fans, we HIGHLY recommend touring with him if you have the chance. And, ask where to find a great Italian sandwich—it was delicious! Read more Written September 25, 2023

We were actually the only 2 people as it seemed no one else had booked for this night. ( It had called for rain). We had a great time and we’re given a great deal of information. The tour guide was well educated and well informed. There was so much information I don’t think I can remember it all. Golden West Building

The third and final site included in U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer's appeal for ensured protection is the Golden West Hotel. Located on the corner of Broadway and Everett in NW Portland, you and your family are sure to have passed this historic building numerous times. Now it is used as space for subsidized housing but did you know it used to be a hotel? In fact, it was the first hotel in Portland to allow African Americans to stay as guests! Starting in 1906, the hotel acted as crucial housing for Black transient workers as they helped build north American railroad lines. Further, it became a gathering place of the NW Portland Black community, as several Black congregations were located nearby. Of course, there is much more to be learned about a building with such a seasoned history. If you find you and the family in northwest Portland soon, you should take the time to stop by so the next to you pass it, it'll mean more than just its name.

Mt. Olivet Baptist Church

Live in northeast? Great, you're probably just blocks away from this historical site! Located in Portland's Eliot neighborhood, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church marks the beginning of Black congregations in the city. Built in 1923, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church has stood for nearly a hundred years and served as a hub for Portland civil rights organizations between the years 1923 and 1973. U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer is currently nominating Mt. Olivet Baptist Church to be added to the National Registry of Historic Places. If successful, this will ensure protection of the church from demolition and guarantee that you and your family have a place to visit for many Black History Months to come!

Unthank Park

Located in Portland's northeast neighborhood between N Shaver and N Failing Street sits Unthank Park. This community hub offers numerous amenities and activities for you and your family like basketball courts, playgrounds and baseball fields! Beyond the nature of the park, though, is its history. Unthank Park is named after Dr. DeNorval Unthank who worked in several Portland hospitals (Providence, Good Sam, etc.) and engaged heavily in public service work. The city of Portland dedicated the naming of this park to him in 1969 for his work against racial discrimination. So whether your family are more sports fanatics or picnic goers, head to Unthank Park this Black History Month to honor Dr. Unthank and his accomplishments!

Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park Playground Project

Spring is on it's way, and you will want to head to the parks. Your first stop should be the Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park. If the name isn't familiar, that's because, the former Lynchview Park was renamed Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park in June of last year. Verdell Burdine Rutherford is a prominent black female civil rights leader and historian who lived in Oregon from 1913 to 2001. She lead the civil rights movement in Oregon and as secretary of the Portland chapter of the NAACP she helped pass the Oregon Civil Rights Bill in 1953, which outlawed discrimination in public places on the basis of “race, religion, color or national origin.”

The parks has been renovated with new playground area, pathways, irrigation improvements, and other park amenities that little and big Portlanders will love and enjoy year round. Now it's also the perfect place to give your child a quick Oregon Black History lesson.

About Regina Spektor

Regina Spektor calls them sandcastles. There’s a million of them, songs that rise up and multiply in her brain — the fruits of months, sometimes years, of channeling and crafting. But what happens to them when it’s time to make new music? “They all have to be slowly washed away. Some of them are really well built, and they’re really high up on the beach,” she says. “It all has to be gone, and then I can start to hear new songs and make a new record.”

Starting with a clean slate, with six momentous years between albums, Spektor returned in 2022 with Home, before and after. The eagerly awaited eighth studio album was the follow-up to 2016’s Remember Us to Life. It paired Spektor with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen), who produced the album from afar in Los Angeles with Spektor co-producing in upstate New York.

The years between her albums weren’t exactly fallow. In 2016, at her friend Lin-Manuel Miranda’s invitation, she contributed a song (“Dear Theodosia,” featuring Ben Folds) to The Hamilton Mixtape. Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared Regina Spektor Day in her hometown in June 2019, she got a street sign with her name at the Bronx Walk of Fame, and that same month staged a sold out residency on Broadway at the legendary Lunt- Fontanne Theatre.

Her work for television and film continued. “You’ve Got Time,” from Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, entered the pantheon of classic TV theme songs, so much so that Spektor released an orchestral version of the award-winning tune for the final episode. She wrote “One Little Soldier” for the closing credits of the film Bombshell and multiple songs for the animated series Central Park.

Time has been kind to Spektor’s work. Twenty years have passed since she self-released her 2001 debut, 11:11, which recently received a remastered reissue, as well as a limited-edition box set. In the decades since, Spektor, who was born in Moscow, Russia and raised in the Bronx, New York, has defied classification. With a sophisticated marriage of classical training and a gift for sharp pop hooks and nuanced lyrics, she has created her own genre. She makes Regina Spektor music.
