Overnight Trips Made Easy: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing an Overnight Bag

overnight bags

Overnight trips are an art form in themselves, balancing the need to travel light without leaving any essentials behind. This balance starts with choosing the perfect overnight bag – a reliable travel companion that ticks all the right boxes for a comfortable, hassle-free journey. Whether it's a spontaneous weekend getaway, a business trip, or a quick visit to the gym, the right bag can make all the difference.

Key Features for Your Overnight Bag

When you're on the hunt for an overnight bag, it's not just about choosing one that looks good – it's about picking a bag designed to make your short trips as easy as possible.

Comfortable to Carry

Given that you will be carrying your overnight bag for extended periods, comfort is crucial. Bags with adjustable shoulder straps offer flexibility, allowing you to alter the length to your preference. An added bonus would be padded straps for added comfort, especially when the bag is loaded with your belongings.

Separate Compartments

A good overnight bag will have multiple compartments to help you organize your items. Look for features like a separate compartment for your pair of shoes to keep them away from your clothes, a laptop sleeve for your electronics, and small pockets for your accessories.

Water-Resistant

An overnight bag that is water-resistant provides an added layer of protection for your belongings. This feature comes in handy if you're caught in unexpected rain or if your bag accidentally gets wet.

Trolley Sleeves

For those planning to take their overnight bag on a flight, a trolley sleeve is an added convenience. This feature allows you to secure your bag onto your suitcase handle, making it easier to navigate through busy airports.

Duffel Bags Vs. Weekender Travel Bags

Two of the most popular types of overnight bags are duffel bags and weekender travel bags. Understanding the benefits of each can help you make an informed decision about what type suits your needs best.

Duffel Bags

Duffel bags are a versatile choice for overnight trips. Their spacious main compartment makes it easy to pack clothes, a pair of shoes, and other essentials. They often come with a shoulder strap and carry handles for flexible carrying options.

Weekender Travel Bags

Weekender travel bags, as their name suggests, are designed specifically for short trips. They often come with more organizational features compared to duffel bags, such as a laptop sleeve, separate shoe compartment, and multiple pockets.

Making the Most Out of Your Overnight Bag

Choosing the right bag is the first step; the next is knowing how to make the most out of it. Be strategic about packing – use packing cubes or bags to separate your items and make them easier to find.

Remember, the goal of an overnight trip is to travel light, so focus on packing just the essentials. An easy rule to follow is to pack one outfit per day, one pair of shoes, essential toiletries, and your electronic devices.

Purpose of Travel

First, identify the purpose of your travel. Are you going for a business trip, a casual weekend getaway, or a workout session at the gym? Each trip demands a different set of items to pack, and consequently, the type and size of the bag will vary.

Business Trips

If you're heading out on a business trip, you might need to carry a laptop, documents, a pair of formal shoes, and a change of formal attire. Look for a bag that has a padded laptop sleeve, separate shoe compartment, and enough space for your clothes. The design should be sleek and professional.

Weekend Getaway

For a weekend getaway, you might need casual clothes, toiletries, a book or an e-reader, and maybe a pair of extra shoes. A weekender bag with multiple compartments to organize your stuff would be an excellent choice. Look for one with a casual but stylish design to match the spirit of your trip.

For gym visits, you'll need to pack your workout gear, a towel, toiletries, and perhaps a change of clothes. A duffel bag, with its spacious central compartment and separate pockets for small items, would be perfect for this.

Size and Weight

The size and weight of the bag are essential factors to consider. The bag should be spacious enough to accommodate your necessities but not too large to become burdensome. Remember, the goal of an overnight trip is to travel light. Choose a bag that has an optimal balance between space and portability.

Quality and Durability

The quality of the bag determines its durability. Look for a bag made from durable materials like high-quality leather or ballistic nylon. Also, pay attention to the quality of the zippers, straps, and handles. They should be sturdy enough to withstand the weight of the bag and regular use.

Price is always a consideration when buying a bag. However, don't just go for the cheapest option. Consider it as an investment. A high-quality bag might cost more upfront, but it will save you money in the long run as it lasts longer.

Last but not least, the bag should match your personal style. Whether you prefer a classic leather bag or a trendy canvas one, there are plenty of options available to suit your style.

The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

A person standing outside in a light blue short sleeve shirt wears the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L backpack, in black with a gray llama-head logo and aqua accents.

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight: 3 pounds 5 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: adventurous Colors: assorted

A person stands by a wooden fence outdoors while wearing the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, our larger pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: back-panel loader Style: minimalist and unobtrusive Color: black, sage

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 3 pounds 10 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell Style: retro Colors: tan, black, olive, green

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

journey overnight bag

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

If you want a budget pick (but only when it’s on sale): The eBags Mother Lode Travel Backpack (our former budget pick) is still your best budget option, if you can catch it on sale for at least half off the list price. It’s not comfortable enough for trekking long distances on foot, but there are plenty of external pockets for organization, a laptop sleeve (which holds the weight of your computer high up on your shoulders), and an easy-to-access main compartment. This pack also has the largest capacity of any bags we tested, expanding to 65 liters—well beyond any airline’s regulated 45-liter limit. However, the bag’s casual-to-basic looks might not be to everyone’s taste. In 2024, eBags raised the price of the Mother Lode to $200. We have seen it on sale for $100, and in our opinion it’s worth getting only at the sale price.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go—unless you can pick up the eBags Motherlode bag for under $100, which we think is a better deal at that price.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

19 best weekender bags for your next getaway, according to our editors

By Madison Flager , Meaghan Kenny and Charley Ward

19 best weekender bags for your next getaway according to our editors

Whether you're planning a quick road trip to the nearest beach or a much-needed couple's getaway, spending a few days away calls for a sturdy, stylish, and functional travel bag. We often turn to our favourite weekenders to hold everything we need for short trips and overnight stays. The best weekender bags are roomy enough to carry your clothes, toiletries , and a pair of comfortable shoes or two but not so bulky as to slow you down while dashing to catch a train or sting you with airline baggage fees. A separate compartment for dirty clothes or shoes is always welcome, too. To narrow down the styles that are worth your pounds (and storage space), our editors put dozens of duffels and expandable totes to the test from top luggage brands like Away, Béis, Antler, Nere, and more.

How we choose the best weekender bags:

best weekender bags

Our editors spent months testing out these weekenders, bringing them on two-day getaways, overnights, and camping trips, and using them as our personal items on flights. We considered each bag's weight, capacity, design, and how well it held up after several trips. We also paid close attention to unique features that make a bag stand out against other options on the market, like having ample pockets or a separate shoe compartment. Below, the 19 best weekenders of 2024, from budget-friendly options to splurge-worthy designer bags.

Stubble & Co The Weekender

Weight: 1.65kg, 1.7kg Dimensions: W55 x H27 x D25cm, W61 x H35 x D29cm Capacity: 40L, 60L Features: 16” laptop compartment, trolley sleeve, outer slip pocket, padded leather shoulder pad, inner valuables pocket

We’re big fans of Stubble & Co’s Adventure Bag and the brand’s weekender is another fabulous buy. There are multiple pockets for essentials, a dedicated laptop compartment and a well-padded strap to take a load off while toting it from taxi to hotel room. YKK zips give peace of mind they won’t bust even when the bag is full to bursting, and a luggage sleeve makes navigating airports as easy as can be. It’s made with water-resistant canvas, finished with leather trims, that gives it a more luxe feel than the Adventure Bag, it comes in a choice of four sophisticated colours and, as a bonus, there are two sizes, both with the same number of pockets.

Carl Friedrik Compact Weekender

Dimensions: W46 x H28 x D18cm Features: Two interior pockets, wide zipped pocket; external slip pocket

From luxury luggage brand Carl Friedrik comes its new chic-as-you-like compact weekender. Compact is the word here – it is on the smaller side, working more as an overnighter than a weekend bag unless you forgo bringing additional shoes. We like it most as a smart underseat cabin bag. Provided you don’t fill it to the brim, it will suit most UK airlines, and there’s space for all your onboard essentials, laptop and an outfit change. The biggest draw is its handsome appearance; the leather straps and understated styling make it one of the most sophisticated options we’ve found.

Nere Canvas Duffle Bag

Weight:  0.75kg Dimensions: 31 x 55 x 26cm Capacity: 44L Features: Detachable crossbody strap, machine washable

Australian luggage brand Nere has recently made its way to the UK with its trend-led selection of bags, suitcases and travel accessories at surprisingly pleasing price points. We can see why they’ve become a favourite with the Instagram crowd; the range comes in a selection of pretty sorbet shades that will stand out on your social feeds and the luggage carousel alike. This canvas weekender bag is a roomy 44L, making it one of the largest on our list. It has a passthrough sleeve to attach to your case and can be slung in the washing machine when needed. There are just two external pockets, but given the generously-sized main compartment, we’re not sure that matters.

Bellroy Classic Weekender 35L

Weight:  0.7kg Dimensions: Capacity: 33L Features: Snap-down ends, wide opening, key hook, grab loops, luggage pass-through

Bellroy is especially good at designing bags that make the most of every inch of space, and this smart weekender is no exception. There are plenty of pockets for electricals and valuables, including an easy-access pocket at the front with a key clip. Snap down ends allow for easy packing, there’s a passthrough band to attach it to your suitcase and grab handles at each end. In contrast to the brand’s sling bag , which has been developed to be super-lightweight, the material here feels weighty and luxe – you’d never know it’s been made solely from recycled PET plastic bottles. At 35L, it’s perfectly large enough for a three-to-four-day trip.

Antler Chelsea overnight bag

Weight: 0.8kg Dimensions: 41.5 x 26 x 18cm Capacity: 20L Features: Detachable shoulder strap, passthrough sleeve, leather handles, fits as an underseat cabin bag on easyJet flights

It might be called an overnight bag, but if you pack strategically Antler's Chelsea bag can easily work as a weekender. I travelled with it on a recent trip to Barcelona and could comfortably fit a weekend's worth of clothes and toiletries. Although if you need to pack extra shoes, there's room for a pair of flip flops but little more. If you're a frequent flyer, this is a worthy investment – in addition to numerous internal and external pockets and compartments, including a laptop sleeve and a water bottle pouch, it also has an over-handle sleeve, making it an ideal option to take on a long-haul flight . The bag is made in a durable water-resistant nylon and comes in nine different colour options, which of course match their Chelsea suitcase range . Fjällräven Kånken Weekender

Weight:  0.65kg Dimensions: 30 x 44 x 20 cm Capacity: 30L Features: Detachable crossbody strap, backpack straps, 17" laptop pocket, expandable outer pocket

Fjällräven's weekender retains the style and charm of the brand’s popular backpacks , just made a little larger for your weekend trips. Unusually, this bag has straps on the back, so it can be used as a holdall, a cross-body, or a backpack, upping its versatility. It has an expandable front compartment, a couple of inner pockets, and a 30L capacity. It comes in the brand’s signature array of cool colours. As a consummate over-packer, I was initially dubious that I’d fit everything I needed in this bag – it looks rather compact at first glance. However, I was happily proven wrong. By rolling my clothes, I fit a full three days worth of belongings in, along with a washbag and an additional pair of shoes in the front pocket. Also, as I don’t drive, I appreciate the backpack straps – they make it much easier to cart my stuff around when I’m heading off somewhere on foot. For that reason, I will start using it as a gym bag, too. Charley Ward

July Carry All Weekender Plus

Weight: 2kg Dimensions: 57 x 23 x 32cm Capacity: 50L Features: Clamshell opening, trolley sleeve, gunmetal feet on base

The best part of this weekender: the clamshell opening, which allows the bag to lie completely flat for easy packing. With a roomy 50-litre capacity and an internal padded pocket that fits a 16" laptop, you've got a good amount of space in here for an overnight stay or a two-night trip. Contributor Juliet Izon tested out this bag when we were on the hunt for the best weekenders in 2021, and was able to pack “everything I needed for a four-day trip to Asheville, North Carolina, including all the outfit changes I wanted for a weekend in the unpredictable weather of the mountains.” Its smart design, sleek look, and spacious compartments make it deserving of a spot on our list this year, too.

Paravel Weekender

Weight: 1.8kg Dimensions: 38 x 20 x 38cm Capacity: 55L Features: Trolley sleeve, removable and adjustable shoulder strap, hand-painted or embroidered initials available

Paravel's timeless Weekender, made from 12 upcycled plastic water bottles, is at the top of our list when it comes to investment bags. The thick cotton canvas exterior is beautifully stitched and elevated by leather accents, while the easy-to-clean nylon interior can withstand a shampoo or water bottle spill. It's a tried-and-true travel essential for US senior commerce editor Madison Flager , who says it's one of her most aesthetically pleasing bags and most functional, too. It's roomier than it looks, fitting a weekend's worth of clothes, with space for a pair of shoes, wash bag and laptop. Inside, there are two deep zippered pockets for sliding in a pair of flats or sandals, chargers, or any other odds and ends you want with you. “It’s a great bag to use as a personal item — I’ve used it for overnight trips, but more often I use it to carry things I want with me in-flight (Kindle, charger, snacks, etc), plus any overflow that didn’t make it into my carry-on luggage , like a toiletry or makeup bag,” says Flager. It comes with an adjustable, removable strap to wear as a crossbody or on your shoulder, and has sturdy leather top handles and a trolley sleeve to secure to a suitcase on longer trips.

Away The Large Everywhere Bag

Weight: 1.7kg Dimensions: 53 x 22 x 30cm Capacity: 38L Features: Trolley sleeve, 15" laptop pocket, detachable padded shoulder strap

Away is a trusted brand among Traveller editors for quality and functionality. Made of a water-resistant nylon and leather trim, the Large Everywhere bag is the biggest of the brand's best-selling style, with enough room to fit three or four days' worth of clothing. It features a clamshell opening, which makes it easy to pack and find everything you're looking for once you arrive. Store clothes in the roomy main compartment and put smaller items like chargers, beauty products, or toiletries in the zippered mesh pockets. Thanks to the convenient trolley sleeve, it fits nicely on top of your Away carry-on. And if you're heading on a business trip, an exterior padded laptop pocket fits computers up to 15 inches. Carry it by the top handle or the padded detachable strap.

Lululemon City Adventurer large duffel bag

Dimensions: 46 x 30 x 23cm Capacity: 29L Features: Trolley sleeve, detachable strap, padded laptop pocket

If you're a Lululemon's ultra-popular belt bag fan, you'll likely fall in love with this weekender, too. Made of a similar smooth, water-repellant fabric, the sporty bag comes in silver or black. This is another favourite of US Traveller associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny's: “It’s the perfect size for a weekender bag — not too big or too small. It gives you just enough room for two to three outfits without becoming too heavy or bulky to carry around. Plus, it fits under the seat on an aeroplane, making it a great personal item.” This lightweight duffle opens wide to fit plenty of clothes and has two mesh pockets and a zippered compartment for keeping important items extra secure. Carry it by the top handles or across your body, and use the trolley sleeve to secure it to luggage when needed. Another plus: It can be folded up nearly flat to store away when not in use.

MZ Wallace Nik Duffel

Weight: 0.9kg Dimensions: 3×18×31cm Features: Detachable crossbody strap, black leather protective feet, trolley sleeve, water-resistant exterior

MZ Wallace's Nik duffel bag is a new favourite of Flager — she's used it as an overnight bag when dog-sitting, as a personal item when flying to Florida for a cruise, and for a weekend trip to Boston. Thanks to its quilted fabric, it's incredibly lightweight at just over two pounds. On the bag's exterior are two deep zippered pockets for small items you'll want to grab easily during transit, like your wallet or passport . Inside, there's a laptop sleeve, a detachable lightweight pouch, and two more slip pockets that Flager uses to store things like sunglasses and glasses. “As a personal item, it’s super roomy—when I took it on a cruise, it was a good size to hold all the things I wanted to keep with me when boarding, including my toiletry bag, a pouch with medicine, another with makeup, and a bathing suit and pool coverup,” she says. What we love most about this duffel: its many pockets, water-resistant material, and polished look.

Monos Metro Duffel

Weight: 1.3kg Dimensions: 41 x 32 x 11cm Capacity: 22L Features: Removable exterior pouch, laptop compartment, trolley sleeve

Monos’s Metro line features polished bags made of only vegan materials, including the equivalent of 16 repurposed plastic water bottles per bag. “This is not just a beautiful bag (get used to the compliments!), it’s also the most organised duffle I’ve ever owned, with a spot for everything,” says global digital director Arati Menon . “The interiors are incredibly roomy and come with pockets that fit everything from your laptop to water bottle. And when you run out of space inside, just snap on one of Monos’ interchangeable kits to the front to put all your necessities (phone, wallet, passport) within easy reach. You could even snap off a kit to double up as a clutch in a pinch.”

Béis The Weekender Bag

Weight: 1.75kg Dimensions: 48 x 41 x 25cm Capacity: 49L Features: Removable shoulder strap, trolley sleeve, separate shoe compartment, padded laptop sleeve

With a water-resistant and pocket-filled interior, plus an extra roomy bottom compartment that fits several pairs of shoes or those souvenirs you can’t bear to leave behind, this understatedly chic travel tote has enough nooks and crannies to keep even the worst over-packer in line. And the structured frame opening on top keeps the bag wide open — or securely shut —when needed. In addition to gaining a ton of buzz on social media for its “cool girl” aesthetic, the Béis Weekender is also a favourite among Traveler US editors, including Flager. It's her go-to tote for true weekend trips — “I use the outer pocket for my phone and ID, and I love the key leash—it’s nice to have a dedicated spot for my house keys so I’m not digging around upon return,” she says. The Béis Weekender is available in a mini size, too, which is better suited as a personal item or a one-night bag.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag 70L

Weight: 0.6kg Dimensions: 71 x 33 x 44cm Capacity: 70L Features: Ergonomic shoulder straps, weather-resistant material, padded base

Made from 100 per cent recycled fabric, Patagonia's weather- and abrasion-resistant duffle is one of the most durable on our list. It's also one of our largest options, holding 70 litres of gear. The padded and removable ergonomic shoulder straps let you carry this duffel like a backpack and detach it when not in use. US senior features editor Rebecca Misner easily packed enough clothes for a two-week road trip from San Fransisco and says it held up beautifully — even after constantly throwing it around the back of her car. And it's water-resistant, so the unexpected shower that came when she was unpacking the car in Portland, Oregon, was no big deal. Its U-shaped top zipper allows the bag to open wide for easy access to everything in the main compartment, which makes packing it and finding belongings a breeze. “It’s a fantastic piece of luggage for a road trip or any adventure travel, but I wouldn't take it on a plane unless I was going on a trip where very minimal lifting would be required. If you keep the weight down, most people should be able to carry it comfortably by its straps,” says Misner. She's looking forward to using it as a ski trip bag this winter: “I won’t worry about throwing it in the back of the car with my skis — scratching or tearing won’t be an issue. Plus, if it gets wet from my ski boots or if I’m loading it in snow, it will wick away any moisture.”

Herschel Supply Co. Tech Novel duffel

Weight: 1.3kg Dimensions: 52 x 28 x 32cm Capacity: 45L Features: 16" laptop compartment, removable padded shoulder strap, trolley sleeve, shoe compartment

Available in classic colours like black, navy, green, and light and dark grey, this sleek weekender from Herschel was recently redesigned to be made with 100 per cent recycled materials. It features a long, padded adjustable strap, a shoe compartment, a trolley sleeve, and a slew of organisers to help keep devices from getting jumbled. This spacious duffle was tested by Kenny, who says this: “It's versatile enough to take you from the gym to a camping trip to a weekend break. The bag’s design is simple yet elevated enough to work for any type of traveller at any age.” She noted the ultra-soft laptop compartment is separate from the bag's main section, so your laptop is well-protected during transit. Travellers can easily fit three days of clothing in this duffel, making it a great option for extended weekend trips away. And at £150, it's well-priced and will be a great travel companion for years to come.

Baboon Go-Bag (40L)

Weight: 1.5kg Dimensions: 52 x 32 x 27cm Capacity: 40L Features: Backpack straps and removable shoulder strap, waterproof shell

We're big fans of Baboon's indestructible bags — they will stand up to any cargo bin, overhead compartment, or car boot they're tossed in. Flager has taken this on several adventure-type trips and says, “It’s exactly what you want when you don’t want to be concerned about the elements damaging your bag.” And with a selection of bold, bright colours, they'll be easy to spot on a luggage carousel and put a smile on your face when packing. The detachable, adjustable shoulder straps are a nice touch, too. While it's a great option for two to four days away, we wouldn't recommend this as a true backpacking bag because of its fabric, which can feel a little stiff.

Everlane The ReNew Transit weekender

Dimensions: 49 x 18 x 36cm Features: Made of 100 per cent recycled polyester, laptop compartment, trolley sleeve

This go-with-everything oversized tote is a minimalist’s dream. Everlane's ReNew Transit weekender has become a go-to for Spurrell ever since she first brought it on a weeklong trip to Egypt. “This makes a fantastic, roomy personal item to top your carry-on for a trip when you probably should check a bag but refuse to. It’s also perfect for a casual one-nighter when you just want to throw pyjamas, an outfit or two, and some other essentials inside,” she says. The bag features a wider bottom than the top, which is great for filling it to the brim without dealing with items spilling out in the back seat. “It’s quite comfy on the shoulders, even in sleeveless clothes with which other straps might dig in, though the padded section of the strap doesn’t sit on your shoulders unless you extend the length quite a bit (I prefer to keep the straps short so the bag sits right under my arm),” says Spurrell. We also love that it's constructed out of recycled polyester (made from 36.6 renewed plastic bottles) that’s also water-resistant. Plus, it fits just as effortlessly in the overhead compartment as it does in the luggage Tetris of a car boot.

Rothy’s The Weekender

Weight: 1.9kg Dimensions: 53 x 23 x 35cm Features: Zipper exterior laptop pocket, machine washable, adjustable and removable shoulder strap

Made from the brand’s signature 100 per cent recycled materials (like marine bound plastic) and available in colourblock prints and understated patterns like midnight camo, this roomy tote has all the makings of a go-to weekender. The main compartment is flanked by easy-access compartments with a magnetic closure on one side and zippered one on the other — perfect for storing keys, travel documents, a Kindle, and anything else you might reach for during the journey. US destinations editor Shannon McMahon recommends it for an extended weekend trip: “I found it most useful for beach weekends away where I needed a lot of big accessories, like floppy hats, multiple jackets, and cosy sweatshirts. It’s less plane-friendly because of its sheer size, but I got away with it as a personal item on a recent trip.” At an eye-popping £650, it is one of the most expensive weekenders we tested. And while you can definitely opt for an equally functional bag with a less hefty price tag, you do get plenty of packing space with Rothy's weekender and are supporting a sustainability initiative. McMahon says it's indestructible and incredibly durable, too. And since travel can get messy, we love how, like everything else in Rothy’s collection, the bag is fully machine washable — just remove the base insert and throw it and the bag into the accompanying wash bag and right into your laundry.

Louis Vuitton Keepall 55

Weight: 2.2kg Dimensions: 56 x 23 x 30cm Features: Padlock luggage tag, double zip closure, detachable shoulder strap

If you're looking to elevate your luggage collection, the Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 is about as classic as it gets. This roomy duffle, tested by Kenny, features the iconic logo emblazoned on the outside of the bag, offering a chic and timeless style. Inside, there's one main spacious compartment that fits two days' worth of clothes and a toiletry bag, and a side zippered pocket for smaller essentials like a phone charger or a pair of sunglasses. Travellers can carry it by its top handle or with the detachable shoulder strap. And the best part: Its leather exterior gets better with age.

What should you consider when choosing a weekender bag?

Leather overnight bags are a luxurious and durable way to elevate your travel style. Large enough to fit a change of clothes and toiletries yet compact enough to work as a personal item or carry-on for most airlines, they’re a perfect bag to take you from day to night (and back to day again).

The best leather overnight bags boast attractive silhouettes and are crafted from high-quality, soft yet sturdy leather that’s designed to stand the test of time. Organizational features like laptop pockets and versatile carrying straps are other details to consider.

We thoroughly researched leather overnight bags from some of our favorite luggage brands and we even tested a few of the picks below ourselves. Whether you’re looking for a compact garment bag, a spacious tote, or an option with wheels, here are the best leather overnighters for every type of traveler.

Best Overall

Quince triple compartment weekender.

High-quality, durable, and easy to pack, there's not much more we could ask for in a leather weekender.

The solid construction makes this fairly heavy for a weekender bag, which is good to keep in mind for anyone packing under a weight limit.

After testing Quince’s weekender bag in our New York City lab, we think it goes above and beyond when it comes to design and value. For $230, you get a premium-feeling leather weekender bag with numerous pockets and compartments for staying organized. We loved the three zippered compartments — two that run along the side of the bag which can fit tablets, books, flip flops, and more, and a central compartment that’s roomy enough for a few days’ worth of outfit changes. While the bag can pack a lot in, it weighs four pounds when empty, so bear that in mind if you’re flying an airline with a strict weight limit.

Besides the efficient design of the bag, the pebbled Italian leather exterior is stunning and soft, and it's lined with durable cotton twill. With color options available in black, taupe, and golden tan, we're confident this bag will become a staple in your luggage rotation. We also love that the sturdy bottom helps to keep the bag’s boxy silhouette without ever feeling stiff and that there’s an external pocket to keep your water bottle within reach. Plus, the large luggage sleeve on the back makes it easy to layer this on top of your wheeled bag for when a weekend trip turns into an extended stay.

Best Oversized Tote

Cuyana easy travel tote.

Incredibly spacious, this bag can fit three or four day's worth of clothing.

It's a little too large for day-to-day use.

If you're in search of a stylish and spacious tote bag , then look no further because this stunning bag from Cuyana is the ultimate travel companion. It's large enough to fit clothing, shoes, and accessories for a long weekend (or longer) thanks to the spacious interior. The leather is soft and buttery, and the premium construction of the bag ensures its longevity and durability for plenty of trips down the road. It has several pockets for storing a tablet and other small accessories, and the top zipper adds an extra layer of security if you have to put the bag in an overhead compartment. Best of all, the bag lays completely flat, which makes storing the large tote hassle-free.

The Details: 25.2 x 14.2 x 6.3 inches | 2.9 pounds | 37-liter capacity

Best Duffel

Mifland duffle bag.

The handles and closures are reinforced with an extra durable leather to minimize stress in high-touch areas over time.

There aren’t any pockets.

This sculptural roll-top duffle looks like a work of art — but there’s plenty of functionality behind its fashionable exterior. It’s crafted from a supple, mid-weight, vegetable-tanned leather that’s available in a range of stylish shades, from matte black to light chestnut and vibrant hand-painted options . Inside, you’ll find one generously sized compartment, which is unlined in order to keep the bag as lightweight and spacious as possible.

Anyone who prefers the convenience of external pockets or the organization of divided compartments will want to look elsewhere on this list given that there aren’t any other pockets, but those who appreciate a cavernous amount of open space will love this eye-catching piece. Plus, Mifland reinforces high-touch areas including the handles and closures in order to keep them in tip-top shape for daily use.

The Details: 21.6 x 13 x 8.2 inches

Best Garment Bag

Hook & albert garment weekender pro.

Hook & Albert

It folds flat when not in use, so it’s easy to store or tuck into a larger suitcase.

It can feel heavy when packed — but multiple carrying straps help to mitigate that.

This water-resistant overnighter pulls double duty, operating as a sturdy weekender as well as a garment bag . After a long-haul flight, open it up and unfold it to find still-crisp clothing — the roomy bottom compartment comfortably fits up to a size 46 suit. The lie-flat portion has a small hook so you can easily transfer and hang up your pieces once you’re settled in at your new destination, too. There are also individual shoe pockets, which help protect your garments from any unwanted dirt. Frequent flyers will appreciate the trolley sleeve, which makes it easy to slip this on top of your rolling luggage .

Type A travelers will love the individual compartments inside the front pocket, which provide space for your phone, passport, keychain, and more — plus, it features stretchy straps that help to keep cords and chargers organized. While the black option is currently sold out, we love the timeless tan hue.

The Details: 22 x 11 x 13.5 inches | 5.1 pounds

Best Messenger Bag

Samsonite leather flap-over messenger bag.

Stylish and spacious, this messenger bag is ideal for overnight trips.

The shoulder strap is made of fabric without any padding.

From the office to an overnight trip, this sleek messenger bag from Samsonite thoroughly impressed us when we tested it in our New York City lab (in fact, it's our top pick for best overall messenger bag out of all the ones we tested ). Made with sturdy leather, the shoulder bag is as stylish as is it functional, and it comes at an excellent price point (under $200) for such a premium bag. There are various pockets for organizing small and larger items, and the main compartment can easily fit enough clothing for a quick getaway. Whether you pack clothes or technology, the front flap keeps everything safely tucked away en route. While we wish the webbed fabric shoulder strap had padding, we still found it comfortable to carry the bag on the shoulder or across the body for superior portability.

Best Personalization

Leatherology harwood weekender.

Leatherology

You can elevate the modern, boxy silhouette with chic monograms, making this a fantastic gift for travelers — including yourself!

It isn’t the roomiest option if you’re looking to use it as a carry-on.

Looking for a way to make your luggage stand out at the airport? Leatherology is famous for its variety of personalization options — you can choose from a debossed monogram, hand painted initials, or chic and understated Trapunto lettering stitched directly into the luxuriously soft leather. The personal touch elevates this already thoughtful gift, whether it’s for yourself or a travel-loving friend. Frankly, you could even opt for coordinating bags, as it comes in a rainbow of 10 sophisticated hues.

Designed to be used as a carry-on or as an everyday work bag, this bag boasts a capacious main compartment, despite the bag’s compact size. It can fit a change of clothes, a pair of sandals or flats , a 16-inch laptop, and all of your smaller tech and gadgets in the numerous interior and exterior pockets available. If you are planning to use it for air travel, you’ll appreciate that it’s lightweight and easy to carry thanks to top handles; a removable, adjustable shoulder strap; and the back trolley sleeve. However, note that while it is on the smaller side, it still may not fit under all airline seats.

The Details: 16.65 x 8.25 x 11.9 inches

Best Convertible Tote

Caraa studio tote.

With handles and backpack straps, this spacious bag can be worn in multiple ways.

It's quite large so it can be a bit bulky when packed full.

Some of our editors also own this Caraa bag and love the two-in-one, convertible design , which makes it well worth the investment considering you can wear it multiple ways. Thanks to the top handles and detachable shoulder straps, the bag functions perfectly as a tote bag or backpack depending on your needs for various types of trips. We love the eight pockets (yes, eight!), including a 17-inch laptop sleeve for organizing travel and work essentials from technology to toiletries. It also features a built-in, waterproof shoe pocket to keep dirty footwear away from the rest of your packed items. One thing to note is that this is a very spacious bag, so it may feel slightly bulky when packed full, but that makes the multiple straps helpful for finding the most comfortable way to carry the bag.

Best Color Options

Latico colin tote/crossbody.

From classic cognac to a summery lemon, Latico’s range of shades offers something for every style.

There isn’t a padded sleeve to store your laptop in.

This slouchy, stylish cowhide bag from Latico is so soft and spacious that you’ll want to scoop it up in more than one color — and luckily, the brand offers it in 14 shades, from classics like black and tan to a fiery orange and sky blue. The fabric-lined interior has enough room for everything you could need in a day, and we love that you can wear it as a crossbody bag or on the shoulder.

It’s a supple overnighter that you’ll want to bring with you everywhere, as it easily accommodates a change of clothes, a 15-inch laptop (there’s no designated sleeve, but it fits nicely in the main compartment), a water bottle, books, and all of your small essentials. There’s an exterior front flap pocket, where you can stash your phone and keys, as well as an interior hidden phone pocket, two slip pockets, a zippered pocket, a card organizer, and pen holders. Forget about fretting over where you put your sunglasses — this bag ensures everything has a proper place, and a zippered top closure keeps everything safe while you’re out and about.

The Details: 12 x 6 x 19 inches

Best Splurge

Troubadour generation leather duffle.

Designed with luxe features, the higher price point is justified through the quality and functionality.

It only comes in black.

A once-in-a-lifetime purchase, this Troubadour duffel is worth the investment for those with higher budgets for luggage. With premium design features like waterproof leather, padded laptop and tablet pockets, and a handy trolley sleeve to slip over suitcases, this luxurious duffel is packed full of thoughtful touches to match the higher price. Not only is the leather fully waterproof, but it's also tanned in the Netherlands using processes that reduce the excessive use of chemicals and water for a more sustainable production process. While another color option would be nice, there's no denying how effortlessly sleek and timeless the black leather looks.

The Details: 20.5 x 11 x 9.5 inches | 4.4 pounds | 32-liter capacity

Best Wheeled Carry-on

Jack georges voyager 18-inch wheeler.

Jack Georges

Handy organizational features ranging from internal and external pockets to compression straps help you pack a lot in this carry-on suitcase.

It’s on the smaller side for a carry-on.

This small but mighty four-wheel trolley is designed to fit comfortably under the seat in front of you on most planes, making it an elegant and incredibly efficient personal item. It’s compact yet spacious, with a deep nine-inch inner compartment and a bevy of internal and external pockets for stashing your travel essentials. Inside the two front zippered pockets are several divided sections and another small zippered pocket, where you can tuck your passport; boarding pass; or in-flight must-haves like an eye mask , headphones, and cozy socks.

The unique, hand-stained buffalo leather will only garner more compliments and wistful glances as the patina develops over time, thanks to the superb craftsmanship. We love how smooth the wheels and telescoping handle are — neither catches or snags, even when used on bumpy terrain. Perhaps the best part is the easy-to-clean nylon lining, which you can simply wipe down as needed.

The Details: 18 x 14 x 9 inches | 8.5 pounds

Best Backpack

Leatherology parker backpack.

Ample pockets make it easy to stay organized for school, commuting, and plane travel.

Given the leather construction, this isn’t meant to be used for recreational activities like hiking or backpacking.

This chic backpack from Leatherology combines the utility of a classic school bag with a polished design that’s sure to turn heads. Crafted from super-soft, full-grain leather, it’s available in a range of timeless hues to suit your sense of style — including black, brown, navy blue, and cognac. We love that you can add a debossed monogram or hand painted initials for a personal touch , making this a thoughtful gift to send off travelers and students alike ahead of a big trip or a new school year.

Slouchy yet structured, this bag can fit everything from a laptop and binders to a change of shoes and a toiletry bag for school-night sleepovers. Side pockets accommodate water bottles, while a front zippered pouch is great for storing your wallet, keys, phone, and other small belongings. There’s also an interior zippered pocket, where you can safely store your passport and any travel documents. While this is a fantastic bag for daily use, the leather isn’t suitable for rugged outdoor activities as it’s not breathable or waterproof.

The Details: 17.7 x 13.8 x 6.5 inches

Best Lightweight Tote

Wp standard oversized leather tote.

WP Standard

The streamlined silhouette of this lightweight bag is an elegant addition to any traveler’s wardrobe.

There’s no zipper closure, so this isn’t ideal if you’re looking for a bag that you can safely toss around.

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your work tote, diaper bag, or personal item for your next getaway, this oversized tote checks every box. The silhouette is soft and relaxed, while the solid bottom provides the perfect amount of structure to ensure the bag never loses its shape. It’s roomy enough to fit a laptop, gym clothes, beach reads, and more, and the ultra lightweight construction won’t weigh you down even if you fill it to capacity. It’s a versatile bag for travelers, who can use it as a personal item in-flight and then transition it to a pretty and practical day bag while sightseeing — just be sure to keep an eye on your belongings, as there’s no zippered closure for added security.

We love how comfortable and sturdy the wide handles are without sacrificing the bag’s refined design and that you can monogram it for a personal touch. In addition to three classic shades — black, chocolate brown, and tan — there’s a trendy olive green color.

The Details: 18.25 x 13 x 5.75 inches | 2.5 pounds

Best Budget

Cuero leather duffel bag.

Multiple carrying straps and pockets make this bag a convenient and stylish way to achieve the leather look on a budget.

The bag is too large to comply with most airlines’ carry-on restrictions.

If you’re looking for a genuine leather overnight bag that won’t break the bank, Cuero’s got you covered. At a price point well under $100, most bags on the market are crafted from vegan PU leather, but this model is made with a slightly distressed leather and a durable canvas lining. What stands out most about this bag is the variety of storage options, including two large zippered side pockets and a buttoned front pouch. The generous interior compartment is ultra wide, allowing for plenty of space to pack an outfit for the gym and a change of clothes — but unfortunately is slightly too large to work as a carry-on for most airlines. That won’t stop us from toting it around on car or train trips, thanks to the rolled top-handle straps and double shoulder straps, which are padded and adjustable.

The Details: 24 x 9 x 8 inches | 4.18 pounds

Best Weekender

Cuyana leather weekender.

There’s a luggage sleeve that fits over your suitcase handle, so you can easily use this as a carry-on.

There isn’t a dedicated external pocket for smaller essentials — rather, there are two roomy pockets that would even fit a laptop.

Minimalists will swoon over this streamlined weekender from Cuyana, which comes in a chic, curved profile. Sturdy and stylish gold hardware elevates the sleek piece (literally — there are small metal feet on the bottom to keep the bag from getting scuffed up when you set it down). It’s constructed from Italian pebbled leather that’s made to stand the test of time so you can feel confident bringing it with you on road trips and far-flung flights alike. Conveniently sized for most airlines’ carry-on baggage guidelines, this lightweight bag fits easily in the overhead bin (and is a breeze to lift, even when fully packed). It also boasts a luggage sleeve so you can slide it on top of your suitcase and roll smoothly through the airport.

Large exterior pockets run the length of both sides of the bag, offering two spacious zippered compartments to securely store your tablets, toiletries, or books. We only wish there was another smaller pocket within them to help keep your phone or other small essentials within easy reach — but there are two small divided pockets inside the bag, along with the generous main section for packing in a long weekend’s worth of clothing (or more!). Opt for classic black or cappuccino brown.

The Details: 14.5 x 22.5 x 7 inches | 4.8 pounds | 37.5-liter capacity

Banana Republic Suede Tote

Banana Republic

It’s incredibly soft, lightweight, and easy to carry — plus, there’s a zipper to keep your belongings secure.

You may want to weatherproof the suede to help protect the material.

Buyer beware: you will receive an absolute deluge of compliments as soon as you break out this sleek and spacious suede tote. This is a bag that will never go out of style, thanks to its timeless amber hue and streamlined silhouette. The interior features an elegant printed lining and several pockets, including two side pockets with snap closures, a slip pocket, and a zippered pocket for anything you’d like to keep out of sight.

With nine-inch drop handles, this is comfortable to carry by hand or slung over the shoulder. Whether you’re packing your laptop and work supplies or a change of clothes and a book for a quick weekend trip, this bag can fit it all — and looks fabulous however you choose to wear it. Word to the wise: hit it with some weatherproof spray to help protect it from the elements.

The Details: 14 x 20.5 x 7.5 inches | 4.78 pounds

Tips for Buying Leather Overnight Bags

Figure out how much space you need.

Leather bags offer less give than a softside suitcase , meaning there’s not as much room for overpacking. In turn, we recommend first figuring out what types of trips you plan to bring your bag on the most, as that will help determine the size and structure that you need. If you're only going away for a few days, opt for something more compact like a duffel or backpack, while you may want to consider an oversized weekender or even a wheeled suitcase if you need more space.

If your schedule is jam-packed with wedding travel or business trips, you may want to consider a multipurpose garment bag, like the Hook & Albert Tan Leather Garment Weekender Pro , which carries like a duffel bag but unfolds to reveal a removable hanger, helping to keep formalwear wrinkle-free while on the go.

Prioritize organization features

A variety of pockets and compartments make it easy to keep track of all your belongings, from padded pouches to protect your laptop to discrete zippered sections where you can safely stash your passport, jewelry, and wallet. The Quince Italian Leather Triple Compartment Weekender is our go-to for staying organized thanks to its three handy compartments, while commuters and students will appreciate the various compartments and easy-access water bottle holders of the Leatherology Parker Backpack .

Comfort is key

No one wants to start a trip feeling weighed down by a bag that’s rubbing them the wrong way. Instead, look for bags with adjustable and padded straps that will stay comfortably in place without digging into your shoulders. Better yet, pinpoint options, like the Leatherology Harwood Weekender , that offer versatile carrying options,= so you can tote them around by hand, on your arm, or via a crossbody strap. For those who prefer the convenience of rolling their bag, opt for a compact, wheeled carry-on like the Jack Georges Voyager 18-inch Wheeler , which boasts a telescoping handle to ensure you won’t need to hunch over it as you move along.

When you first purchase a leather overnight bag, you may want to consider applying a protective spray; these can be targeted at waterproofing or spill-proofing your piece, or mitigating UV discoloration. (For luxury leather goods, we love the Saphir Medaille d’Or Super Invulner Waterproofing Spray .)

When it comes to keeping your leather in prime condition, you may need to spot clean it from time to time. Be sure to check the brand’s care instructions for best practices, as different types of leather require different care. Generally, you can spot-treat most leather bags by rubbing a damp cloth and a bit of dish soap gently along trouble areas. For more severe stains, opt for a leather cleaner that doesn’t contain chemicals like alcohol and acetone (we like this one from Weiman ). Remember to always apply a patch test to a discreet part of the bag first!

Leather overnight bags can make excellent carry-ons given their durability, compact size, easy portability, and numerous organizational features. Many of the bags on this list are also made with a trolley strap, which you can slide onto the handle of wheeled luggage for easy movement through the airport. While it’s crucial to verify the policy of the airline you’re flying ahead of time, most of these picks are compliant with the general carry-on guidelines of 22 inches or less.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

How to Pack an Overnight Bag & What to Bring On Your Trip

Last Updated: March 25, 2024 Fact Checked

Selecting Clothes

Choosing toiletries & small items, packing tips, overnight packing list, things you'll need.

Are you going away overnight but totally stuck on how much to bring with you and how much to leave behind? Don’t sweat it. The great thing about overnight trips is just that: they’re only overnight. It’s okay to spend less time packing and more time relaxing with friends and family— but if you aren’t sure what to do, you’ve come to the right place. Read on for a handy guide to packing an overnight back, including tips on choosing the right clothes and toiletries. We’ll help you pack efficiently to ensure you’re out the door in no time!

Things You Should Know

  • Pack 2 outfits (one for the first night and another for the next day) and 1 or 2 pairs of shoes. Check the weather forecast so you know what kind of clothing to bring.
  • Prepare a bag of travel-sized toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant. Also, put together personal medicine and hygiene kits for the trip.
  • Fit all your clothing and toiletries into a single duffel, backpack, or tote. Then, bring a second smaller purse or crossbody bag for your wallet, ID, and phone.

Step 1 Pack one outfit for the first night and another for the next day.

  • When choosing what to wear the first day while you travel, pick something comfortable, like jeans or leggings and a T-shirt.

Sarah McDonald

  • You’ll really only need a second pair of shoes if you’re going somewhere with a specific dress code. For example, if you have a fancy event that night, pack a nice pair of shoes—like heels or dress shoes.

Step 4 Bring a pair of clean underwear and socks.

  • Consider accessories that might come in handy at your destination. For a colder climate, throw a scarf into your bag or wear it while traveling.
  • To prevent jewelry chains from knotting, pack your jewelry in plastic bags and pull a bit of the chain out. Zip up the bag tightly around the piece of chain, leaving it sticking out of the top.

Step 6 Reuse your day 1 travel clothes for your return trip, if possible.

  • Always bring as many reusable or multi-purpose items as possible on trips. For example, a soft beach towel could double as a blanket, or you could bring a metal water bottle instead of a disposable plastic one.

Step 7 Pack optional items like workout clothes or a swimsuit if you’ll need them.

  • If it’s raining, bring an umbrella or raincoat and leave your best leather shoes (since you don’t want to damage them outside).
  • If temperatures look high during the day and night, bring light, breathable outfits and save room in your bag by leaving your heavy jacket at home.

Step 9 Prepare layered outfits so you’re ready for any situation.

  • Even if you’re mostly bringing warm-weather clothes, pack a jacket to throw on in case the nights are chilly.
  • If it’s supposed to be cold out, wear a short-sleeve shirt under your sweater and jacket in case the weather gets warmer or you get a little overheated while indoors.

Step 1 Fill one small toiletry bag with only the necessities.

  • Moisturizer
  • Contact lenses and solution
  • Razor and shaving cream
  • Hair ties and bobby pins
  • Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash (if there isn’t any at the destination)

Step 2 Prepare a mini medicine kit.

  • You don’t need to bring whole bottles of medicine if you’re just traveling overnight. Instead, fill a pill organizer with as much medicine as you need (or pack 1 extra dose if you’re worried about running out).

Step 3 Keep a portable hygiene kit with you as you travel.

  • Remember, you don’t need more than a small bottle of hand sanitizer—and a bigger bottle will just be harder to fit in your bag.

Step 4 Bring no more than 10 cosmetic products if you wear makeup.

  • Makeup sponge
  • Lip gloss or lipstick

Step 5 Pack only travel-size (or TSA-approved) toiletries in your bag.

  • Check the TSA guidelines on sizes for containers of liquids, gels, and creams before you fly. Even if you’re not flying, adhering to the guidelines by choosing smaller containers can help you save space.

Step 6 Stick to portable electronics unless you need your laptop for work.

  • It’s okay to bring your laptop if you know you’ll need it for work—the goal is simply to pack as lightly as possible.
  • Consider bringing a power bank or portable charger to ensure your phone won’t die when you still need it.

Step 7 Plan for some entertainment if you’ll be in a plane or car for a while.

  • Make sure your phone or tablet is fully charged before you leave home!

Step 1 Use a duffel, backpack, or large tote bag to hold all of your things.

  • Try not to fill more than one travel bag for an overnight trip; more will likely be unnecessary and weigh you down. Downsize if you find yourself needing another bag to fit everything.
  • The goal for an overnight trip should be to have 2 bags total: a purse or crossbody bag for small essentials you’ll keep on your person and an overnight bag with all your clothing and toiletries.

Step 2 Cover your shoes and place them at the bottom of the bag.

  • Alternatively, if you’ve already packed your bag and need to squeeze a pair of shoes in, try packing them along the side of the bag. Arrange your shoes so that the soles are facing the side of the bag.

Step 3 Roll each article of clothing before packing them.

  • Folding your clothes is also a viable option if you prefer; rolling is just the most efficient when you need to save space.
  • Try stuffing your socks in bras or sneakers to save space. Your socks can also help the bra cups or sneaker toes keep their shape in transit.

Step 4 Organize your belongings with clear cubes and pouches.

  • As you pack your clothes, stack them from heaviest to lightest. Place heavy jackets near the bottom of the cube, then pants and jeans, dresses, and shirts near the top.

Step 5 Bring a smaller purse, crossbody, or spare foldable bag.

  • Have a few charging cords to manage? Keep them from tangling by rolling each one into a circle or oval, then clipping them together with a binder clip.
  • Any chance you’ll go swimming or talk a stroll down a beach? If your clothes might get wet, bring another spare foldable bag to put them in so you can keep them separate from your clean belongings.

Step 6 Fill a gallon-size Ziploc bag with snacks if you have a long trip.

  • For example, if you’re traveling for an overnight business conference, you probably won’t have time to do a ton of exploring and sightseeing—so don’t bring your chunky walking shoes.

About This Article

Sarah McDonald

To pack an overnight bag, include a change of clothes, basic toiletries, and something to keep you occupied during travel. Add some lightweight pajamas to save space, or sleep in your underwear, and bring a pair of clean underwear and socks. If you’ll be going to an evening event, pack smart clothes and evening shoes to change into. Pack only necessary toiletries, like your toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant, in a zip-lock bag. If you have time to do your hair and makeup before you leave, bring minimal products to touch up your look. Add other essentials, like your phone charger, headphones, or keys, to an extra makeup bag or plastic bag so you can easily find them. If you’re travelling far or expect to be waiting around, bring a book, tablet, or something fun to entertain yourself. We're all about those retro vibes. You'll feel like you're boarding the Hogwarts Express with your vintage luggage, even if you're just climbing in the back of your mom's car.

A satisfied shopper notes, "I love the canvas material and it is SO spacious (both the bag and the small travel one that comes with it). The (faux) leather feels nice, not cheap. One of the inside pockets is lined with a waterproof material, and the clasp for the crossbody is very nice as well."

If it's good enough for Ariana Madix, it's good enough for us. The iconic Beis bags come with a bottom compartment that unzips to reveal extra space for storing everything from toiletries to shoes.

A reviewer writes, "Spacious, great pockets inside and a creative design overall - this bag is worth every cent. Highly recommend!!".

If you want to invest in a high-quality bag in a ~fun color~ that you'll use over and over again, LeSportSac is the site to hit up. Their weekenders are durable, washable, and made to last.

One reviewer writes, "I've had it for almost a month now, and I love my weekender so much! It's so useful for those quick weekend getaways. The bag is definitely big enough to squish a lot of things that are enough for 2-5 days. I love the luggage zipper feature. And it doesn't get too dirty quickly. This bag will stay with me for awhile."

Ever needed to juice up your phone and realized that your charger cord is buried at the bottom of your bag? This duffle has a charging port built into the side to help you avoid just that.

A customer writes, "I’m not even joking, this bag is great. It has so many pockets and the ones on the outside are big enough for my hydro flask. There’s a wet compartment too that has special material to make it waterproof."

If you haven't tried packing cubes yet, you're missing out on some major organizing fun. The cubes that come with this duffle will help you fit *even more* into your already-stuffed bag.

One reviewer comments, "I was a little hesitant purchasing a tote bag on Amazon but I am truly impressed by the quality of the bag and how spacious the inside of the bag is. It does not have a funny smell to it and there are no stitching problems. It comes with a long strap so you can carry it on your shoulders which I love."

Multi-use bags keep the world spinning 'round. This one can double as a gym back *and* a travel bag, so it won't get dusty in your closet between trips.

A happy customer writes, "The bag held a lot more than I thought it would, and it went back and forth with me with no disarray in my belongings. I'd put this bag up against any of my more expensive bags, and it would probably win. No regrets whatsoever."

A shopper writes, "Just took it for its first flight. All good! Fits perfect as a personal item, that’s what I wanted it for. I like the fact that it opens all the way, easy to get to things, I especially love the little area to tuck my passport/ ID in without having to open the bag or fuss with things in my hand when trying to board."

Orange you glad you stopped to check out the Stevyn Duffle? Reviewers point out how the bag is the "perfect size," and we agree — with some savvy outfit planning, you might be able to replace your carry-on with this bag.

I LOVE the laptop compartment and the luggage buckle for your suitcase. This bag holds ALL of the things but doesn’t look like you’re carrying a utility bag."

The classic Herschel straps give this duffle an undeniably retro look. The bag comes in every style from camo to faux leather to monochrome.

A loyal user writes, "I use this as my “overnight” bag for work. I carry it almost every day. It’s made very well like everything else from Herschel. This bag gets tossed in and out of the trunk of my car on a near daily basis and it doesn’t have one blemish or tear in it."

How to Pack for Overnight Train Trips: Everything First-Timers Should Know

Traveling by rail has long been regarded as a sustainable way to commute between cities, but long-distance and overnight train trips have been enjoying a renaissance of their own recently.

More and more travelers are opting for this sophisticated, slowed down form of transportation. Unlike flying or even driving, train travel allows passengers to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the shifting landscape that would otherwise go by in a blur. And while train travel in North America has become more accessible and comfortable over the past few years, there’s still a lot to consider in preparation for a long-distance ride.

For those new to the mode of travel, we’ve compiled everything you need to know and plan for when embarking on a voyage by rail. Whether you’re hopping onboard for a quick overnighter between states or are heading out on an unforgettable multi-day ride across the country, here are our best tips on how to pack for overnight train trips to ensure your journey is smooth and comfortable.

Coast Starlight Train Amtrak

Amtrak's Coast Starlight runs from Los Angeles up to Seattle.

Find the right route

Train travel planning step one: choose your route. You likely know Amtrak as an established option for getting from point A to point B practically and efficiently, but you may not know that the train operator also offers a handful of bucket-list worthy routes across North America.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight takes riders along the Pacific Ocean shoreline and weaves through California and Washington State. Alternatively, the Amtrak Cascades takes passengers through Western Canada and into the lush Oregon landscape. Canada’s Via Rail also offers a wide variety of itineraries north of the border that take passengers from coast to coast, starting in Nova Scotia and snaking through the country to the Rocky Mountains and beyond.

Establish a luggage strategy

“Packing for a train trip can be easy—almost as easy as forgetting something while packing,” says Catherine Leblanc, Clefs d'Or Concierge at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac in Quebec City. “To avoid forgetting anything, I suggest laying the content of the bag on the bed first and then starting in an orderly manner to begin packing.” (A wise tip for any type of vacation.)

Leblanc suggests packing two distinct bags: a small, durable rolling suitcase like the Delsey Paris Chatelet hardside spinner and a compact backpack like the Herschel Little America laptop backpack for smaller items. This approach makes essentials like electronics, books, a wallet, and snacks accessible throughout the trip. If you’re sleeping on the train and have to check your bag upon arrival, you’ll want to have toiletries and pajamas readily accessible in your carry-on, too.

To free up space in your suitcase, Leblanc swears by Samsonite Compression Packing Bags . Not only do packing cubes make it easy to organize your suitcase, but they will also make it possible to squeeze more possessions into a smaller bag. (Larger suitcases can sometimes be tough to store on trains.)

Leblanc suggests using tissue paper to line the suitcase in between every layer of clothing to avoid getting clothes wrinkled—this is especially useful if your train itinerary spans multiple days.

Keep in mind that train travel is more flexible than air travel in terms of regulating what you can and cannot bring aboard. Most train operators permit full-sized liquids, aerosols, and razors, which makes packing personal care items much easier. That said, you should still double check the baggage limitations of the company you’ve booked with before you embark on your trip to avoid having to discard any personal care items or accessories upon boarding.

Don't skimp on entertainment

The slowly shifting landscape can only provide entertainment for so long, so you’ll want to come equipped with enough boredom-busters to get you through the less scenic stretches (this is even more true if kids are coming along).

Note that there are no seat-back entertainment systems on trains, so you’ll want to arrive with a fully charged laptop or tablet if you’re hoping to spend the trip watching movies. Not all trains have reliable Wi-Fi, so a high-speed pocket Wi-Fi might be worth the investment, especially if you’re hoping to work onboard. Most trains do have individual electrical outlets built into each seat, but a heavy-duty power bank is a wise investment to ensure your gear is fully juiced up no matter what.

The train is a great place to lose yourself in thoughts and daydreams as you gaze out the window. Bring along a notebook and smudge-proof pen to jot down ideas along the way. Readers will want to bring along a novel or e-reader , and can also load up a phone with audiobooks to listen to while watching the landscape pass by.

Have snacks at the ready

Most trains have a café or bar car and a dining car that sells snacks and warm meals. That said, like plane food, most meals and beverages sold on trains are more expensive than normal, and, to make matters more complicated, many trains only accept cash.

As such, it’s worth making the space in your carry-on for at least a small back-up supply of mess-free snacks that can tide you over in between stops—think Clif Bars or Kind Protein Bars —in case you do run into issues with restricted payment methods or a closed dining car.

You’ll also want to bring enough beverages to stay hydrated for the duration of your trip. Most train cars have small potable water fountains for passengers to use, but it’s still a good idea to bring a few bottles of sealed drinking water or a self-cleaning and purifying water bottle as a backup. Electrolyte tablets are another great low-space addition to have on hand.

A little preparation goes a long way on overnight stays.

Settle in for a good night's sleep

If you’re embarking on a particularly long train ride and are not splurging on a sleeper car, you’ll want to ensure you’re packing enough comfortable personal essentials—and that they are easily accessible throughout the ride. A multi-day or overnight trip might seem daunting at first, but you’d be surprised by how comfortable a train seat can be with the right planning.

“Whether I'm overnighting on a train, a bus, or a plane, I always travel with ear plugs and eye masks (both a primary and backup), as they help ensure a good night's sleep,” says Dan Meyer, founder and director at Back&Pack . “ Noise canceling headphones are also great—especially if you need some quiet time to wind down.”

You’ll also want to bring sanitary wipes to feel fresh and clean for the entire trip.

“I always have a small pack of Water Wipes with me when I travel long-distance on a train,” Meyer says. “They help you feel clean after a hectic travel day, and they don't contain chemicals that make you feel sticky, so you can use them to wipe down your face—even your body—and feel refreshed when a nice shower is unavailable.”

journey overnight bag

Antibacterial wipes are also a must-have, as they kill germs and help you ward off sickness.

“I often wipe down train restrooms before use,” Meyer says. “This gives me a bit more peace of mind when I'm surrounded by a lot of other travelers.”

Then there’s the question of sleep. Most economy class train seats are larger than the average airplane seat, which already sets you up for a more comfortable night. But train operators don't usually provide blankets or pillows—so it’s worthwhile to pack your own neck pillow (or a full-sized pillow ) and folding travel blanket , even if it adds some bulk to your carry-on. Trains frequently drop in temperature come evening, so pack a comfortable, loose-fitting hoodie or a wearable blanket if you’re prone to getting chilly while sleeping.

All in all, a little preparation goes a long way, and we’re more confident and excited than ever in the ease, comfort, and beauty of train travel .

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

  23. My overnight-train journey from St Petersburg to Moscow in kupe

Inside Moskovsky train station, my journey had gotten off to a surprisingly good start. Unlike what I was to later experience in Moscow's Domodedevo airport, there was no endless line of x-rays which I had to drag my bags on and off at least half a dozen times; there was just one x-ray to go through and not a queue in sight.
