S.S. Bon Voyage
Inspired by the renowned wine and gastronomic expertise of the region, the S.S. Bon Voyage will represent the bountiful destination—from the beautiful design on the ship’s bow to the enhanced culinary opportunities onboard. With her transformation, the S.S. Bon Voyage will debut a completely different look—including a redesigned top deck with an added swimming pool and lounge area, with an adjacent casual dining venue featuring lighter fare with a local spin and chef-led cooking classes. Inside, four new gorgeously-appointed suites will be introduced, as well as marble bathrooms throughout the ship, an enhanced dining room with an added chef demonstration area, and a new bistro inspired by Bouillon Pigalle in Paris. All finished perfectly in the unique and beautiful design aesthetic that Uniworld is known for, and paired with the addition of more crew members for a higher crew-to-guest ratio.

S.S. Bon Voyage Overview
The Uniworld river ship formerly known as River Royale underwent a total transformation and emerged in 2019 as the S.S. Bon Voyage. The redesign is inspired by the rich culinary and gastronomic excellence of the region in which she sails. A new bistro on board is inspired by the world-famous French bistro, Bouillon Pigalle. A new swimming pool and lounge, complemented by a casual eatery with a light menu and cooking classes, are just some of the exciting new features aboard Uniworld's S.S. Bon Voyage. The accommodations also got a face-lift, with four new suites, as well as marble bathrooms throughout the ship, introduced to make the ship even more luxurious. As a final touch to elevate your onboard experience aboard S.S. Bon Voyage, Uniworld increased the number of crew as a sign of their dedication to top-tier service. To learn more about Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, and the new and improved S.S. Bon Voyage, please call 1-800-377-9383 to speak with one of The Cruise Web's river cruise experts!
- Passenger Capacity: 124
- Year Built: 2006
- Luxurious Staterooms The new S.S. Bon Voyage features four new, elegantly designed suites. Another new feature in the fresh staterooms is the marble bathrooms, which were completely redesigned before the ship's launch in 2019. No matter which room you choose, from the classic interior cabin to the spacious Owner's Suite, they are all complete with lavish amenities, such as a flat-screen TV, premium bath products and more.
- Culinary Excellence With any Uniworld ship comes extraordinary gastronomic treats, and the S.S. Bon Voyage is no different. Except for the addition of two new places to spoil your taste buds. Just steps from the new pool is a casual eatery that boasts lighter fare and interactive cooking options. Another bistro, inspired by the Bouillon Pigalle in Paris, is another new eatery that will excite guests aboard S.S. Bon Voyage.
- Relaxation and Rejuvenation Vacations are for relaxation and recharging from the stresses of everyday life. While sailing aboard Uniworld's S.S. Bon Voyage, spend some time in the Serenity River Spa for the best spa treatments you can find on Europe's rivers.

Spectacular S.S. Bon Voyage Cruise: Unforgettable Vacation Adventure
Uniworld's newest 'super ship', the S.S. Bon Voyage (formerly the River Royale), offers enhanced amenities such as an increased number of suites, more dining options, and a higher passenger-to-staff ratio than other ships in its fleet. Exclusively travelling the Bordeaux-Medoc region of France, the ship's French decor immerses passengers in the region from the moment they arrive. The ship's design is courtesy of the company's founder and owner, Bea Tollman, and her daughter, with Murano glass chandeliers, polished brass, marble, and fabric-covered walls at every turn. The top deck features awnings for shade and thickly cushioned lounge chairs for relaxation. The cabins, although smaller than other river ships, offer marble bathrooms and beautiful decor. All-inclusive cruises include daily activities, food and drinks, gratuities, and airport transfers. Passengers can enjoy activities such as trekking, biking, wine tasting, and chateau visits. The ship also has a focus on wellness and active lifestyle, making it ideal for those looking for an elevated standard of service.

Say ‘Bon Voyage’ to Bordeaux with Uniworld River Cruises
by Emma Smith - 20/08/2019
Updated 13/07/2023
Capturing the brilliance of Bordeaux and joining the fleet as the newest Super Ship, S.S. Bon Voyage is a spectacular vessel paying homage to the typical French flair that Uniworld Cruise Line is known for.
Reborn from the former River Royale, the ship underwent a $14 million transformation to reveal new accommodation, dining venues, pool facilities and decor and a new name – S.S. Bon Voyage.
Alison Earnshaw, Managing Director of RiverVoyages.com , recently stepped aboard to explore the renewed ship and visit Bordeaux in true Uniworld style.
Stepping aboard S.S. Bon Voyage immediately elicits a feeling of welcome luxury, as the Reception staff greets you by name (a daily acknowledgement which added a comforting touch).
After meeting our personal butler and enjoying our own tour of the ship’s decks, and enjoying the in-suite touches such as macarons and a handsomely-stocked mini-bar, we delved into the harmonious fusion of French decor with regional culture and cuisine.
This ship is certainly one which immerses the itinerary into life on-board, with excursions, dining and surrounding views marrying the two perfectly. In my case, the region was Bordeaux where S.S. Bon Voyage sails along the Seine, Dordogne and Garonne rivers.
Experiences on-board and excursions onshore are curated to feature more personal, experiential tours which are not only enriching to be part of, but fond to remember. Visiting Blaye, a commune in France, we headed to an ancient 17th century citadel for a unique yoga session led by a wellbeing coach. Calming our minds and taking in the panoramic views of the Gironde Estruary was the perfect way to start the day.
Following this, we headed to a small winery where a passionate, informative and engaging owner gave us a wine tasting tour. Exploring his wine cellar, which had champagnes and wines, we were offering generous tastings of his favourite choices, many of which were sold at a price of €325 for six bottles.
He also allowed us to peek at his exceptional wine collection, for his most valued clients, which are stored in their own cellar and even showed us his vintage car collection. He told us that the vineyard and winery was previously owned by French actor, Gérard Depardieu, which only added to the unique experience of the tour!
Another tour option was a countryside bike tour, combining fresh air with the gorgeous scenery and fine wine in the Médoc vineyards. Starting with your bicycle in Paulliac, you set a course through the landscapes of historic estates and towns that have seemingly remain unchanged for centuries. Learning about the history of the region and its chateaus, you end the experience with another indulgent wine tasting.
There are two standard tours included each day, with a full briefing provided by the Cruise Director each evening beforehand. For those who are active and long for a sense of adventure, there’s even additional choices to include walking or bike tours.
S.S. Bon Voyage blends the experiences you enjoy during these shore excursions with menus specially-curated to reflect the local cuisines. The Brasserie serves traditional bistro fare within in a cosy restuarant which is a great alternative to the main dining room. I’d recommend booking as soon as you arrive on-board, as it’s a popular choice!
For an even more expert dining experience, La Cave des Vins is an intimate venue where connoisseurs can enjoy a six-course tasting menu paired with wines. This ‘chef’s table’ style dining is highly recommended while on-board.
As for life on S.S. Bon Voyage, the level of inclusions and little touches provided were incredible. In my stateroom, I recieved fruit, chocolates and homemade cookies daily and both laundry and ironing were complimentary throughout my stay. There is also a selection of wines, beers, soft drinks, speciality coffees and selected spirits included throughout the sailing, alongside a well-stocked mini-bar for those in a suite.
All guests on-board are also gifted a steel water bottle, eliminating the need for plastic bottles being used on-board, which could then be taken away at the end of your sailing, highlighting Uniworld’ active changes towards sustainability while river cruising.
With her stunning lobby clad in polished wood, subtle brass detailing, and stylish tones of emerald and sapphire throughout, S.S. Bon Voyage is certainly a jewel in the Super Ship crown and the ideal vessel to explore French culture across Bordeaux.
New ships joining the Uniworld fleet
S.S. Bon Voyage is one of five new ships set to join the cruise line’s fleet by 2020, elevating the luxury experience along unusual rivers to exciting destinations. In 2020, four more ships will debut for Uniworld including:
- Mekong Jewel for Vietnam and Cambodia
- S.S. La Venezia for Italy
- S.S. São Gabriel for Portugal
- S.S. Sphinx for Egypt
Each of these will exemplify true artistry, offering the boutique luxury cruise experience to a range of fascinating destinations.

The S.S. Bon Voyage is designed to immerse guests in French culture, art, and wine, starting with its stunning grand entrance—a signature Super Ship element—clad in polished wood, subtle brass details, and hand-crafted balustrade. The stylish emerald tones found in the bar, Le Salon Champagne, are inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s personal abode, Villa Majorelle. The quintessential La Brasserie, with its natural green and pops of yellow décor inspired by the famous Bouillon Pigalle, serves traditional bistro fare, while Le Grand Fromage offers menus reflective of the local cuisine, prepared from locally-sourced ingredients. La Cave des Vins is an intimate space where connoisseurs can gather for expert food and wine pairing dinners upon request. 25 Things You Should NEVER Do On A Cruise
Posted: April 26, 2024 | Last updated: April 26, 2024
Embarking on a cruise is an exciting adventure, offering a unique blend of relaxation, exploration, and entertainment. However, to ensure that your voyage is as enjoyable and trouble-free as possible, there are certain practices and behaviors to avoid. In this guide, we will navigate through 25 crucial things you should never do on a cruise. From safety protocols to social etiquette, these tips will help you make the most of your time at sea. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, being mindful of these points can greatly enhance your cruising experience.
Ignoring Safety Drills
Cruise ships conduct mandatory safety drills, often before departure. Skipping these drills means missing vital information about emergency procedures and evacuation routes. It’s essential for your safety to attend and pay close attention.
Overindulging in Alcohol
While it’s tempting to enjoy unlimited drinks, excessive alcohol consumption can lead to dangerous situations. Overindulgence can impair judgment, leading to accidents or unwelcome behavior. Moderation is key to ensuring a pleasant and safe experience for everyone.
Disrespecting Crew Members
Crew members work tirelessly to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Treating them with disrespect not only dampens their morale but can also affect the quality of service you receive. Remember to treat them with kindness and respect.
Ignoring Embarkation Times
Missing the ship’s departure time at any port can lead to being left behind. It’s crucial to keep track of time and return to the ship well before the scheduled departure. Cruise lines are strict with timings for logistical and safety reasons.
Forgetting Sun Protection
Cruises often involve long hours in the sun. Neglecting sun protection can lead to severe sunburns and increase the risk of skin cancer. Always use sunscreen, wear hats, and stay hydrated.
Wearing Inappropriate Footwear
Cruises often involve various activities that require proper footwear. Wearing high heels or flip-flops in areas like the pool deck or during excursions can be dangerous. Opt for comfortable, non-slip shoes suitable for the activity.
Disregarding Local Customs and Laws
When visiting different ports, it’s important to respect local customs and abide by local laws. Ignorance can lead to offensive behavior or legal troubles. Research and adhere to the cultural norms of each destination.
Ignoring Health Protocols
Health protocols, especially post-COVID-19, are crucial on cruises. Disregarding these measures can lead to the spread of illnesses onboard. Always follow the health guidelines provided by the cruise line.
Overeating at Buffets
Cruise buffets are tempting, but overeating can lead to discomfort and health issues. It’s better to enjoy meals in moderation and try different cuisines gradually. Remember, the buffet will be there throughout your cruise!
Leaving Valuables Unsecured
Leaving valuables like passports, jewelry, or electronics unsecured in your cabin can be risky. Use the safe provided in your room and only take essentials when leaving the cabin. Minimizing valuables on display reduces the risk of theft.
Not Checking Your Bill Regularly
Charges can quickly add up on a cruise. Regularly review your onboard account to avoid surprises at the end of the trip. This practice helps in tracking expenses and disputing any erroneous charges promptly.
Engaging in Risky Behavior
Avoid risky behaviors such as climbing over railings or engaging in unauthorized areas. Such actions can lead to serious injuries or even falling overboard. Always stay within marked passenger areas and follow safety guidelines.
Neglecting Hydration
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in warmer climates. Dehydration can lead to health issues and spoil your cruise experience. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Ignoring Time Zones
Cruises often cross different time zones. Ignoring these changes can result in missing activities or port departures. Keep your watch synchronized with the ship’s time, not the local time of the port.
Disrespecting Other Passengers
Respect for fellow passengers is essential for a harmonious trip. Loud noises in cabins, cutting lines, or hogging deck chairs can create conflicts. Practice courtesy and be mindful of others’ space and comfort.
Not Reading the Daily Newsletter
Cruise lines provide daily newsletters with important information. Not reading them can lead to missing out on activities, changes in schedules, or essential announcements. Make it a habit to go through this newsletter every day.
Failing to Make Reservations
Popular onboard activities and excursions often require reservations. Not booking in advance can lead to missing out on these experiences. Always check if reservations are needed and book early.
Ignoring Seasickness Precautions
If you’re prone to seasickness, take necessary precautions. Ignoring this can lead to a miserable experience. Medications and natural remedies can be effective in managing seasickness.
Not Packing Appropriately
Cruises have varying dress codes for different occasions. Not packing the right clothes can lead to discomfort or being turned away from events. Research the cruise line’s dress code and pack accordingly.
Not Using Hand Sanitizer
Using hand sanitizer regularly can prevent the spread of germs. In the close quarters of a cruise ship, illnesses can spread quickly. Regular hand sanitizing, especially before meals, is a good practice.
Being Late for Dining Reservations
Timeliness is important for dining reservations. Being late can disrupt the service and affect other guests’ dining experience. Always arrive on time or notify the staff if you’re running late.
Not Using the Do Not Disturb Sign
The ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign is important for your privacy. Not using it can lead to awkward interruptions by housekeeping. Use it whenever you need privacy or are not ready for your room to be cleaned.
Throwing Anything Overboard
Disposing of anything overboard is not only harmful to the environment but also illegal. It can lead to pollution and harm marine life. Always use designated trash receptacles.
Not Exploring the Ship
Sticking to one area of the ship means missing out on what it has to offer. Take time to explore different amenities and activities. This exploration can enhance your overall experience.
Forgetting to Relax and Enjoy
Finally, it’s important to remember that a cruise is a vacation. Getting caught up in schedules and activities can lead to stress. Take time to relax, enjoy the scenery, and appreciate the experience.
A successful and memorable cruise experience hinges on not just the destinations you explore or the amenities offered on the ship, but also on how you approach your journey. By avoiding these 25 pitfalls, you ensure not only your own safety and enjoyment but also contribute to a pleasant atmosphere for fellow passengers and crew. Remember, a cruise is a chance to unwind, discover new horizons, and create lasting memories. So, step aboard with mindfulness and consideration, and you’re set for an incredible journey on the high seas!
