Brisbane Art Deco Walking Tour – New Farm

Brisbane Art Deco Walking Tour – New Farm

Meet at the Bandstand in New Farm Park for a specially designed two-hour walk, exploring a selection of New Farm’s Art Deco gems.

New Farm was transformed as the 1920’s Art Deco design concepts swept the globe. Brisbane’s leading architects responded by designing modern houses, and prestigious purpose-built, multi-level blocks of flats. The Art Deco flat was considered to be the height of modernity and sophistication.

The exteriors of these constructions, incorporating the Californian bungalow aesthetic and many Mediterranean elements, are often reminiscent of the homes of Hollywood’s stars of the “silent film era.”

New Farm’s inter-war (1918–1939) Art Deco flats were compact, furnished with time-saving electrical appliances and private garages. Built close to transport and with proximity to the city, these buildings were “in vogue.” They attracted Brisbane’s professionals and top-end buyers.

Tour leader Santina Musumeci grew up and was educated in Brisbane’s inner city. Her family moved to New Farm 40 years ago. Santina has been a member of the New Farm Historical Society since 2009.

This tour of Brisbane in a vintage convertible is turning heads

Admire the architectural gems from the backseat of a 1937 Dodge.

Midway through a Queensland cruise, I'm taking a break from seafood and surf to spend the day in Brissie on a tour of the city's art deco buildings. I meet my host, Moe Akgun, outside the international cruise terminal in Brisbane.

"Clyde" outside Chateau Nous.

It's not difficult to spot Moe, a man who's dressed like he's just stepped out of the 1930s. Standing beside a vintage, midnight-blue, 1937 Dodge convertible, he and the car attract plenty of attention from passers-by who stop for a photo and to admire the details.

"Nice car," I say, extending a hand to introduce myself.

"We don't call it a car, this beauty is an automobile," he says with a smile.

We don't call it a car, this beauty is an automobile.

I hop in the backseat of "Clyde", one of two automobiles in Moe's fleet. The other, a 1936 vintage Chrysler airstream sedan, is known as "Bonnie". Moe, who caught the art deco bug after a visit to Napier in New Zealand, a city renowned as one of the art deco capitals of the world, has a cheeky sense of humour.

"You can book us for weddings, formals, art deco tours and the occasional bank robbery, but don't tell anyone," he says.

It's not difficult to spot Moe.

The Sunshine State isn't top of mind when thinking of prime examples of art deco architecture in Australia; we might list Sydney's Hayden Orpheum or perhaps the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne.

Yet the interwar decades of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s were prime creative years for the architects, builders and designers who were shaping the capital of Queensland. Though many examples of the original buildings have been demolished or significantly changed, many impressive examples remain. Today, we'll be driving across the Story Bridge and around the 1930s-era Woolstores buildings of Teneriffe. We'll visit inner-city Fortitude Valley, where two of the finest examples of deco aesthetics are found in the McWhirters and TC Beirne & Co former department stores. Moe has plenty more surprises planned.

First, we head to a tree-lined street in upscale Ascot to admire Chateau Nous. Built from 1939 for a local dentist, the beautiful home is considered one of the most impressive remaining residential structures from the interwar period. Now painted white, it was once pastel blue. Moe says there's a bomb shelter under the house, not an uncommon feature from a time when Japanese air raids were anticipated. It's a fascinating insight into a period in Australia's history I'd like to know more about.

After posing for photos in front of the house, we continue our tour of Brisbane's lovely streets. It's a very drivable city, especially for the passenger (me) who gets to sit back and feel the wind in the hair as the views pass by. Even without the art deco element, this is a great city tour.

"You don't just see old buildings, you see Brisbane differently," Moe says.

ART DECO – SPANISH MISSION – ARTS & CRAFT – New Farm 2024 Walking Tour No 1

New Farm - This Guided Walking Tour explores how Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Arts & Craft changed its architectural landscape.

Rediscover New Farm, one of Brisbane’s oldest suburbs. Learn more about its rich architectural heritage.

On this guided walking tour, we will see how the early architects interpreted overseas trends.

From the 1800’s, Brisbane’s social and political elite commissioned colonial and federation homes in New Farm.

The next generation embraced the simplicity of the Arts & Craft style. By the 1920/30’s demand grew for the glamorous architecture – ‘Spanish Mission’. Entrepreneurs quickly saw commercial opportunities and built Art Deco Flats.

Brisbane had transitioned from large Federation mansions that required ‘staff’, to embrace a new and modern lifestyle in an Arts & Craft or Art Deco home.

On this tour we will meet owners (subject to availability) undertaking restoration/renovations to their ‘stucco, brick and tile’ heritage properties.

constructivist Moscow map

A new walking map of Moscow highlights the city’s early Soviet architecture.

  • ALL OVER THE MAP

Tour the Decaying Beauty of Soviet Moscow With This New Map

A new walking map highlights the endangered structures built for a socialist utopia in the 1920s.

Some remarkable buildings were built in the early years of the Soviet Union, guided by dreams of a socialist utopia. These structures were inspired by cubism and other modern art movements, and they featured steel, glass, and other modern materials.

This construction began in the early 20th century, when the nation was emerging from centuries of tsarist rule.“If you can attempt to imagine this era, Russia had no money whatsoever, but it’s full of hope and aspiration and talented people who weren’t able to achieve anything before,” says Derek Lamberton, the founder of Blue Crow Media , an independent publisher based in London that has just released a map of Moscow’s architectural highlights from this period.

The new map highlights more than 50 examples of so-called constructivist architecture , which thrived in Russia during the 1920s and early 1930s. A short description in English and Russian accompanies a photo of each building.

Ministry of Railroads Headquarters in Moscow

The NKPS building, built in 1934, housed the Ministry of Railroads.

Many of the buildings served socialist purposes, hosting workers clubs or communal kitchens, for example. But in contrast to the dreary brutalist concrete-block buildings of the later Soviet era, the constructivist buildings were bold and futuristic. “They were pretty outrageous,” Lamberton says. (Lamberton worked at National Geographic for two years in the mid-2000s).

The constructivist map of Moscow is the third architecture map from Blue Crow. The first two highlighted the concrete-dominated brutalist architecture and graceful art deco buildings of London, respectively. When those maps found a niche audience, Lamberton says he knew he wanted to do Moscow next. He studied Russian in college and has a masters degree in Russian art and literature. “This was finally the opportunity to do something with my degree,” he says.

To make the maps, Lamberton he teamed up with two muscovites working to preserve the city’s architectural heritage: Natalia Melikova of The Constructivist Project and Nikolai Vassiliev of Docomomo Russia . Melikova also took the photos for the map.

constructivist Moscow map

Photos and descriptions of more than 50 constructivist buildings appear on the back of the map.

Hundreds of constructivist buildings remain in Moscow today, but many of them are in danger of demolition or deterioration through neglect. “The city is not interested in the preservation of these buildings,” Lamberton says. “It doesn’t fit in with how Moscow sees itself right now.” Lamberton and his collaborators hope the new map will help draw attention to the issue, but it will have to pass review with the state cartographic agency before it can be distributed in Russia.

Meanwhile, Blue Crow has more architecture maps in the works, including a brutalist map of Washington, D.C., due out in October, and a map of 20th-century architecture in Berlin, due in November.
