Kool Moe Dee cemented a reputation during the 1980s as one of Hip-Hop’s elite MCs who said what he felt without concern. After putting in work with The Treacherous Three group, Moe Doe pivoted to the scene as a feared battle rapper. He took on Busy Bee at the Harlem World venue in 1981, and spent much of the later decade in a high-profile war of words with LL Cool J. That skill and attitude earned the New Yorker a platinum LP, How Ya Like Me Now , as well as the gold-certified Knowledge Is King .

By the mid-1990s, Kool Moe Dee ceased making albums, but the Manhattan native never stopped making noise. In 1999, ego trip magazine and St. Martin’s Press published ego trip’s Book of Rap Lists by revered journalists Sacha Jenkins, Elliott Wilson, Jefferson “Chairman” Mao, Gabriel Alvarez, and Brent Rollins. The text, now available in digital formats , compiled interesting factoids and lists about Hip-Hop music and history. Pieces ranged from a list of MCs who could DJ, legacy artists that were notoriously harsh about sampling, and cringe-worthy mistakes made in Rap lyrics.

The text also included a Rap report card from Kool Moe Dee, who graded his peers and himself in 1999. Notably, the move was an homage to an album insert from the aforementioned How Ya Like Me Now.  Moe Dee’s second solo LP included Teddy Riley production and a report card reminder that he was atop many of his peers. The late 1987 Rap report card was examined in The Los Angeles Times upon release.

Big Daddy Kane Says He Asked Kool Moe Dee For A Battle When He Was 14 (Video)

In his circa-’99 grade book, Moe Dee judged peers on Vocabulary, Articulation, Creativity, Originality, Versatility, Voice, Records, Stage Presence, Sticking To Themes, and Innovating Rhythms. These categories earned numerical ratings that led to an academic-style alphabet grade. More than 30 MCs were measured, including some interesting misspellings.

Notably, K.M.D. handed the highest score, a 97, to Miss Lauryn Hill. Moe deducted a point each in “Voice,” “Records,” and “Stage Presence” from the Fugees MC/singer. The grade was earned after the release of 1998’s The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill solo debut . Close behind L-Boogie is Biggie Smalls; The Notorious B.I.G. earned a 95. Tupac Shakur and Busta Rhymes trail him— the One Nation affiliates  each grabbed a 93. . Two artists who worked with Biggie and Pac , Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man and Naughty By Nature’s Treach also tied with a 91. The only other artist in the ’90s was then-No Limit Records star Mystikal, who gathered a 90.

Moe Dee’s list of grades includes MCs who would later compete among the best, including The Roots’ Black Thought (87), Nas (84), JAY-Z (82), and Ice Cube (88). Of the pool, he was harshest on former Jive/Zomba Records label-mate Too Short (76) and No Limit founder, Master P, who got the same as Short Dog. Also earning a C+ was then-Bad Boy Records star Ma$e, who has named an album and a group after the same Harlem World where Moe Dee came to glory. K.M.D was especially critical of P’s Vocabulary and Short’s Versatility. Both categories scored 6’s.

In the 1987 report card, which was also posted in ’22, Kool Moe Dee gave himself, Cold Crush Brothers’ Grandmaster Caz, and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5’s Melle Mel the highest scores—95, 95, and 94, respectively. Notably, K.M.D. handed his then-foe LL Cool J a 90, docking the Queens, New York superstar in Originality with a 6. KRS-One, Rakim, and extended Treacherous Three family T La Rock joined the exclusive class of A-students.

Moe Dee was harshest on the Beastie Boys, who he lumped as one—and gave a 70. The Uptown MC was deductive about Vocabulary, Creativity, Originality, Voice, and Innovating Rhythms—at a time when only Licensed To Ill had released. He explained his rating at the time, “They’re pretty awful. I gave them a lot of 6’s. They don’t have any vocabulary and they try to make up for their lack of originality by screaming and yelling. Besides, our tour followed theirs and wherever we went, we couldn’t get into hotels or restaurants ‘cause the Beasties had been there two weeks before and gotten into trouble.” Moe Dee added that he was unimpressed by Run-D.M.C., who he had battled on Michael Holman’s Graffiti Rock over three years prior .

Mercury Records act The Boogie Boys were the only others scoring a C, while late-’80s acts like Ultramagnetic MC’s and Public Enemy, and Heavy D & The Boyz scored very low B grades. “I listen to everything that comes out–and I mean everything– so I figured that I’d make a pretty good critic,” Kool Moe Dee told The L.A. Times ‘ Patrick Goldstein with the arrival his sophomore Jive LP. “It’s all a matter of knowing your competition. The idea of a report card wasn’t meant to be insulting. I try to have good relations with all my rivals—though I don’t know what LL Cool J’s gonna think of all this.” One group of that era, Jive label-mates DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, grabbed an 88, as did Brooklyn’s U.T.F.O. Last month, U.T.F.O.’s Kid Kangol passed away from colon cancer .

Yesterday (January 10),  ego trip’s Book of Rap Lists co-author Elliott Wilson recalled Chairman Mao’s idea to get Kool Moe Dee to reprise his Rap report card for the 1990s.

In recent years, Kool Moe Dee has been back in business. He, Caz, and Grandmaster Melle Mel (those three top-rated MCs from the 1987 list) earned a platinum plaque for their Macklemore & Ryan Lewis collaboration, “Downtown.” The Seattle, Washington duo made the generation-bridging track a single from This Unruly Mess I’ve Made , and performed it at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

2022 “Rap-port card”: Here’s what Kool Moe Dee’s grading system might look like for today’s rappers (from best to worst). Do you agree?

(January 14, 2022).  You knew it would happen.  After a couple of rap “report cards” from 1980s hip-hop pioneer Kool Moe Dee went viral last weekend, it was only a matter of time before someone would take his grading system and apply it to today’s rappers.

That someone happens to be yours truly and your favorite music ranking source, djrobblog.  And our imaginary 2022 version of KMD’s report card for the current generation of rappers is right here (below) in this article.  

But first, for background, New York hip-hop legend Kool Moe Dee, real name: Mohandes Dewese, knows a thing or two about rap—particularly early rap—as he came up during its lean days with memorable ‘80s classics like “How You Like Me Now,” “Wild Wild West” and “Go See The Doctor.”

In 1987, for his successful  How You Like Me Now  album, KMD printed a report card for the LP’s inner sleeve that ranked 25 rappers in ten different categories on a scale of one to 10, with an aggregate total and grade at the end.  The categories were: vocabulary, articulation, creativity, originality, versatility, voice, records, stage presence, sticking to themes, and innovating rhythms.

On the original list, it’s probably not surprising that KMD himself received the top grade, along with fellow New York legend Melle Mel (both 95, A+), with Bronx-born Grand Master Caz on their collective tail with 94, also dubiously receiving a letter grade of A+.

Twelve years later, the “I Go To Work” rapper did it again.  At the behest of a collective known as Ego Trip (made up of Gabe Alvarez, Sacha Jenkins, Elliott Wilson, and Brent L. Rollin), KMD created another report card in 1999, this time featuring 31 of that era’s biggest solo hip-hop stars and using the same ten grading criteria and scale.

On the updated list, the highest grade went to Lauryn Hill, the New Jersey icon who was still hot at the time with her 1998 opus  The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill .  She received an impressive 97 (A+), while the late King of Brooklyn, The Notorious B.I.G., rated second with a score of 95 (also an A+ using KMD’s scoring).  Busta Rhymes and the late 2Pac (Tupac Shakur) finished tied for third with a 93 score (both got A’s).

Interestingly, fellow New Yorker and now-legend Jay-Z, who was only three albums deep in 1999, finished with a lowly 82 (with the categories of stage presence, vocabulary and versatility bringing him down significantly).  Other clonkers on the ‘99 list included ‘bout it-‘bout it New Orleans entrepreneur Master P, Bad Boy rapper Mase, and pimp-rap legend Too $hort, none of whom received much love with C+ ratings.  

Now, djrobblog has taken that same KMD criteria and graded 37 of today’s biggest rappers.  But first a few acknowledgements and disclaimers before I get to the report card.  

First and foremost, hip-hop has changed significantly since 1999, and especially since the first list was created in 1987.  KMD criteria like “articulation” might not be something a rapper from the current millennium would even strive for, especially in the early-to-mid 2010s when mumble rap was blowing up.

As for vocabulary, it’s never wise to judge one’s word capacity based on subjective listening to his or her music—and we’re sure word-count technology wasn’t available when KMD created his lists. So to remove some of that subjectivity, djrobblog consulted this 2019 study that tallied the number of unique words used by contemporary rappers in all of their hits. The blog used its judgment for those rappers who came after the project or who were otherwise not included in it.

Also, the category of “records” may be a misnomer because, well, hip-hop simply doesn’t thrive on “record” sales anymore so much as it does streaming.  Still, by “records,” the blog assumed that KMD meant product consumption—regardless of format—and consumption is charted by Billboard magazine as it has always been. Therefore, Billboard chart performance, as well as an artist’s prolific status based on quantity of output, are the measuring sticks the blog used for “records” in the 2022 grades.

For the category of “sticking to themes,” which seems to contradict “versatility” but I get why KMD included both, an artist rated highly here even if his or her penchant for staying true to one theme came at the expense of versatility or creativity (another category KMD included).

For “stage presence,” the blog used observations of each rapper’s awards show or other TV performances, or video clips of their concert or festival shows (the blogger hasn’t seen all of these acts in concert himself and we doubt KMD had either).

And, finally, while the blog recognizes that much of today’s hip-hop centers on standard trap beats, there are many variations of it out there and a few rappers have even managed to make those beats with only subtle differences sound interesting. (Besides, KMD didn’t appear to have penalized rappers back in the day for totally ripping off ‘70s and ‘80s hits for their samples.)  With that in mind, the “Innovating rhythms” category—or beats—was judged leniently.

Having put all that out there, here is the blog’s “rap-port card” for 37 of today’s biggest rappers, using KMD’s grading system as we imagine he might apply it.  Like KMD did, we picked the 37 rappers subjectively based on their current relevance to the hip-hop community.  We excluded any rappers who appeared on KMD’s earlier lists (like Jay-Z) even if they’ve had product in the past five years.

Oh, by the way, if you’re wondering about the average grades for each era, which may be an indicator of how the current era of rap compares to the golden era of the late 1980s or hip-hop’s commercial explosion in the 1990s, they are as follows:

1987: average grade was 84.8 (B)

1999: avg = 86.3 (B+)

2022: avg = 81.0 (B-)

I may have undergraded J. Cole for sure. I’m revisiting.

I absolutely love this rap report card! First of all Kanye is gonna have a full on tantrum that he didn’t get an A+ (Lol). Next, I am really surprised at J-Cole’s grade, but I’m partial. I would really like to see the report card broken down into categories such female rappers. Gimme Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Lil Kim. Then I’d def wanna see west coast rappers like the Game, then east coast followed dirty south. I feel like each location tells a different story by rappers. This was excellent DJRob!

THE KING OF NEW JACK SWING TOUR DATES

An innovator credited with creating New Jack Swing, a genre of music whose influence  permeated musical categories including, contemporary R&B, Hip-Hop, Gospel, Soul and Pop since the early 80s, Grammy award winning , multi-platinum mega-producer Teddy Riley continues to remain a relevant force in entertainment.  Companies including Yamaha, PreSonus, and AKAI have benefited from the his technical expertise lending to the creative properties in some of their products which have been major contributions on today's ever-evolving market. For more than 30 years Teddy Riley’s career has embodied  ingenuity as a recording artist, Songwriter, Producer, Composer, Arranger, Engineer, Music and Technology expert and World music trailblazer. With over 1000 credits to his name,the musical icon has been inducted into the Hip-hop hall of fame and was recently awarded the Soul Train Legend award for his works in creating The New Jack Swing Era of music whose impact changed the sound of R&B indelibly.

As a child prodigy since the age of 5, Teddy Riley’s gifts manifested themselves as he began playing multiple instruments at church in his hometown of Harlem, New York. His uncle, owned the famed Harlem club The Rooftop, and built a studio in the club in which at age 14, a precarious Riley would spend most of his time crafting beats for local New York emcees. Under the tutelage of local music producer Gene Griffin, Riley formed his first group, the short-lived Kids at Work. In 1985 Riley worked on the production of Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew's "The Show" , but things would take off for the producer when at the age of 17, he would produce rapper Kool Moe Dee's 12" single, "Go See the Doctor" which would became a crossover hit, reaching #89 on The Billboard Hot 100. Sought after for his impeccable ear, and masterful ability to fuse musical styles to create a fresh feeling, Riley’s writing and producing for other artists was ushering a new sound that would become known as New Jack Swing. On November 25, 1987, the New Jack originator co-produced R&B singer Keith Sweat’s debut solo studio album titled, Make It Last Forever, which sold three million copies. The biggest hit from this album was the song that inaugurated the new jack swing era "I Want Her" (#1 R&B/#5 Pop), and was nominated for the 1989 Soul Train Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Song of the Year award, while the title track from the album hit #2 on the R&B charts.

In 1987, Riley, Aaron Hall, and Timmy Gatling formed the R&B group Guy . Managed by Gene Griffin, Riley's work with Guy pioneered the new jack swing style of R&B,Riley infused his own unique blend of hip-hop beats, R&B progressions and the Gospel vocal stylings of Hall to create the archetypal New jack swing sound on Guy's eponymous debut. In 1989, Riley produced Big Daddy Kane's "I Get The Job Done", as well as other work for The Jacksons, The Winans, James Ingram; he also created the highly successful remix of Jane Child, "Don't Wanna Fall in Love", which became a crossover pop smash.During the era of New Jack Swing, Riley composed, produced and/or wrote Billboard chart topping, award winning RIAA certified hits and LP's for his Multi-Platinum R&B hit group Guy (Groove Me, Let’s Chill, I Like,  Teddy’s Jam)  Johnny Kemp,(Just Got Paid) Bobby Brown, (My Prerogative)  Heavy D, (Now that We Found Love) High Five, (The Kissing Game) The Winans, (It’s Time)  Wreckx-N-Effect, SWV, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Al B Sure, MC Hammer, Jay-Z,  Snoop Dogg, NSYNC, Big Daddy Kane, New Kids on the Block, Joe, Kenny Lattimore, Robin Thicke, Boys II Men, Lady Gaga, and an extensive list of others.

After the release and tour of Guy's second album The Future, Riley co-produced half of Michael Jackson's album Dangerous, on the recommendation of Jackson's long-time producer Quincy Jones. Featuring the Riley co-produced singles "Remember the Time", "Jam" and "In the Closet", Dangerous remains the most successful New jack swing album of all time with 32 million copies sold.Guy disbanded in 1992, and Riley moved on to the production, performance and promotion of Wreckx-N-Effect's second album Hard or Smooth. Based in Virginia by this time, Riley discovered and signed production duo, The Neptunes,composed of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, during the making of Wreckx-N-Effect's smash hit single "Rump Shaker".

In late 1991, Riley formed a second group, Blackstreet. The group would go on to release several major hits, including "Don't Leave Me" (1997), the number one single "No Diggity" (1996, featuring Dr. Dre and Queen Pen), and "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" (1999, with Janet Jackson, Eve, and Ja Rule). 

23 year old Teddy Riley Produced the "Dangerous" LP by Michael Jackson which sold more than 32 million copies worldwide, debuted at No.1 on Billboard 200, remained on the Billboard 200 chart 117 weeks. He also won a Grammy for Best Engineered Album Non-Classical. The album also received three Grammy Nominations for Best Pop Vocal Male, Best R&B Vocal Male and "Jam" as Best R&B Song. Nine singles were released coupled with hit song “Remember the Time” and it was Michael Jackson's fastest selling album in the United States with gross earnings for Sony at a bit over a billion dollars.
