Walking back into history: Wilcox County offering tours of historic homes March 23

Wilcoxhome

The people of Alabama's Black Belt of the 1800s are of course all gone, but some of their descendants are still here, as are, thankfully, a number of their elegant homes.

Those families graciously welcome you to tour their homes on Saturday, March 23, in two Wilcox County neighboring towns, Camden and Oak Hill.

That's seven homes, two churches and several other historic structures.

The tour runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Tickets are available here.

The four homes featured in Oak Hill are:

The  Fox-Jones-Mitchell home , c. 1845,  Twelve Oaks – the Kennedy-Griffin home , c. 1920, The  Dale-Kennedy-Neumann home , c. 1847, and The  Jones-McWilliams home , c. late 1840s. Churches and other buildings on tour in the Oak Hill area are: the  Bethel Associate Reform ed  Presbyterian Church , c. 1895,  Bear Creek Baptist Church , c. 1880, the  Dale Brothers Store  – Brittany House Antiques, c. 1870, as well as the  Oak Hill School , c. 1926. Featured at the school will be a quilt display from local resident Betty Gaines Kennedy. The homes featured in Camden are:  RiverBend – the Bell-Moore-Jones home , c. 1840, the  Bagby-Liddell-Burford home , c. 1847 and the  Jones-McIntosh-Hicks   home , c. 1860.

This reception will feature keynote speakers, musical guests, the  Tommy Ward Band , wine and hor d’oeuvres. You can explore the idyllic beauty of RiverBend Plantation and grounds during the cocktail hour before the guest speakers.  Tickets are limited .  Dress is c ocktail attire.

Information on places to stay and dine during the tour is at here.

There are 15 sites in Wilcox County listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The annual tour is organized by the Wilcox Historical Society, formed in 1967.  Its initial goal was to restore the Wilcox Female Institute. The mission has broadly expanded to preserve the history of the region.

An impressive number of distinguished Alabama leaders are from Wilcox County, including:

Current Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey Current President of the University of South Alabama and former Congress member Jo Bonner Former U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions. Former President of the University of Alabama, Dr. Judy Bonner Legislative leader, State Sen. Roland Cooper, “The Wily Fox from Wilcox.” CPA and business leader James Edwin “Jim’ Tait. On March 23rd, The Wilcox Historical Society Tour of Homes will take place in Oak Hill and Camden, Alabama. Featuring seven homes, two churches, and other historic sites, the annual event draws visitors from around the state to appreciate the well-preserved architecture. The area has a rich and fascinating history. According to the Wilcox Area Chamber of Commerce :

Wilcox County was created One day older than the state of Alabama by an act of the Alabama Territorial Legislature on December 13th, 1819. The county was created from portions of Dallas and Monroe counties, which in turn were created from Creek Indian lands acquired by the United States in the 1814 Treaty of Fort Jackson. It was named after Lieutenant Joseph M. Wilcox, an army officer from Connecticut who was killed in a battle with the Indians on the banks of the Alabama River in this region in 1814.

Wilcox County includes numerous examples of antebellum homes and buildings, most still in continuous use. At one time (early 1900s), Wilcox County was one of the largest and wealthiest counties in the State of Alabama. Its towns are also historic. Camden was incorporated in 1841, after the county seat was moved from Canton Bend on the banks of the Alabama River in 1833. Camden was originally named Barboursville after Sen. Philip B. Barbour of Virginia and later renamed Camden by physician John D. Caldwell in honor of his hometown of Camden, South Carolina. Oak Hill was settled in the early 1800′s. Pine Apple was founded in 1820. Pine Hill saw its first settlers in the early 1800′s. Yellow Bluff is our newest town, incorporated in 1986.

Like much of Alabama, cotton was Wilcox County’s main agricultural product in the nineteenth century. With more than 50 boat landings on the Alabama River, Wilcox County was an important transportation site as well. Paddlewheel steamers took cotton and other agricultural products as well as passengers up and down the Alabama River.

Churches and other buildings on tour in the Oak Hill area include the Bethel Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, c. 1895, Bear Creek Baptist Church, c. 1880, the Dale Brothers Store – Brittany House Antiques, c. 1870, as well as the Oak Hill School, c. 1926. Tour of Homes features Wilcox County treasures

The Tour of Homes, an event held in the spring hosted by the Wilcox County Historical Society, features various homes throughout the area. In recent years, the tour has attracted thousands of guests to Wilcox County to enjoy the historic homes and Southern cuisine.

camden al tour of homes

In 2021, The House on The Hill, the Liddell-Philippi home, was one of the stops on the tour. The current residence of Mary Glen Grant and her husband, Edgar, The House on the Hill was built in 1834. During the tour, Grant said, 1,200 visitors came through the historic home on Clifton Street in Camden.

The first owners of the home were Major Robert Larkin Goode and his wife, Viola Matthews Goode, who resided there during the Civil War. The home was originally a two-on-two style home, with a detached kitchen, a common feature before electricity. Though renovations over the years expanded the home, the original charm of the home remains.

The House on the Hill was sold to the Albion Morgan family, newcomers to Camden from New York state who arrived soon after the Civil War.  The Morgans raised their two daughters in the home. Their youngest daughter, Edith Morgan, also known as Polly, remained in the home until her death.

She spent time at the Art Institute of Chicago, developing a particular interest in photography. Upon her return to Camden, Polly organized and instructed classes for young women in the community, teaching different mediums such as watercolor and photography out of the home.

“Young girls would come here for a month or six weeks, and she would teach them to paint,” Grant said. Additionally, she dedicated herself to educating African American children in the area, teaching them to read from the Bible. “She taught art. She taught Bible. She was just a wonderful lady way ahead of her time,” Grant added.

Polly had no children of her own. In her old age, she hired a couple, Glen and Marguerite Liddell, to live in the home with her and take care of her. Upon her death, Polly bequeathed the home to the young couple.

The Liddells established the first power company in Camden, and The House on the Hill was the first home to have electricity. “This was the first house to have electricity, only because my grandfather owned the power company,” Grant explained. Today, the holes drilled in the hardwood floors to route wires around the home can still be seen.

The Liddells then passed the home on to their daughter and her husband, Billy and Janet Philippi. Today, their daughter Mary Glen and Edgar Grant reside in the home, which is jointly owned by Grant and her two sisters.

The home is filled with furniture that the family acquired over the years, along with family artifacts, and even a furniture piece that once belonged to actress Marion Davies. “It’s full of treasures. We found my grandfather’s World War I uniform. Then we found my father’s World War II flight jacket,” Grant said.

camden al tour of homes

Visitors during the tour enjoyed seeing a wall featuring photos of family descendants. “It was a fabulous, fun weekend,” she said.

Today, the House on the Hill is still used as a gathering place for the family. “We have people coming often. I feel humbled that I am the one that is here in this house. It’s a huge responsibility, but it is such a joy. I love opening the house to all my cousins. It’s an honor,” Grant said.

The tour of homes is sponsored annually by the Wilcox Historical Society.  The next tour is scheduled for March 25, 2023, and will focus on homes in Pine Apple in eastern Wilcox County. Tickets will be available Dec. 1, 2022. Ten homes and two churches will be on featured.

A visit to Pleasant Ridge is a true step back in time. Your hosts, Colonel Scottie & Mrs. Tammy Myers, are veteran reenactors and gifted storytellers who bring history to life with exciting and entertaining detail.

Lawyer and planter Tristram Bethea built the home in 1838, combining Federal and Greek Revival elements. It’s brick construction, a rarity in the early Black Belt, was designed to impress. After a series of owners, Pleasant Ridge sat vacant and crumbling for more than 50 years. The home's journey from romantic ruin to authentic restoration became a preservation success story. Today, formal gardens and ancient cedars and magnolias complete the setting, along with a log cabin, barn and other outbuildings. Colonel and Mrs.Myers wish to keep the home true to its period and intend to share their jewel with others

Preserving the history of Wilcox County, Alabama

2021 Wilcox Historical Society Tour of Homes

March 26 – 27, 2021.

Due to the continued coronavirus pandemic, the Wilcox Historical Society has rescheduled its Tour of Homes in Camden, Alabama to March 26 – 27, 2021 . If you had already purchased a ticket to the Pilgrimage in 2020, it will be honored in 2021.

The entire weekend will operate as originally scheduled with two exciting additions. James Farmer will still be the Guest Speaker at RiverBend Plantation on Friday night, March 26th. However, the expanded Tour now includes seven homes and two churches on Saturday, March 27th. The Brittany House Antiques at Oak Hill will provide ticket holders breakfast that morning as originally planned. In addition, the Inaugural Pilgrimage Ball, sponsored by the Furman Historical Society, will be held at Wakefield in Furman on Saturday Night, March 27th.

If you currently have a reservation at Liberty Hall Bed & Breakfast or the Capell House at Pebble Hill Bed & Breakfast , you will still have your rooms in March unless you call and cancel your reservation. Visitors staying at other hotels/venues must contact your provider to change your reservation.

As a thank you for your patience and support, two historic sites have been added to our Tour of Homes! The first addition is Pleasant Ridge , circa 1844. This tall-columned “big house” is not only the last extant brick antebellum house in Wilcox County, but also one of less that a dozen brick homes of the period to survive in the Black Belt.

We are also adding the historic Antioch Baptist Church . Opened in 1885, it is one of the oldest African-American churches in Wilcox County and was a crossroads of the civil rights movement. In fact, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the church twice in 1965.

Other historic homes on the tour are: Yaupon – the Mathews-Tait-Rutherford House, circa 1840, River Bluff – the Beck-Bryant-Talbot House, circa 1840s, the Beck-Darwin-Coats House, circa 1846, the Strother-Gibbs House , circa 1900, House on the Hill – the Liddell-Phillippi Home, circa 1834,  and Liberty Hall – the McDowell-Harris home (hall and formal rooms only).

The Camden Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church will also be open for Tour. The building of the ARP church is almost four decades older than the church founding. The ARP congregation was organized in 1890 and they purchased an antebellum building, constructed in 1849, from the dwindling congregation of the Camden Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Other historic sites on tour are the Old Shoe Shop Museum , the Beck-Miller Law Office , circa 1840s and the Old Wilcox County Jail, constructed 1889 as well as the Tour and WHS headquarters, the Wilcox Female Institute , constructed in 1849 and Dale Lodge No. 25 , constructed in 1848.

Please know the decision to move the Tour of Homes again has not been made lightly. We are keenly aware that many of you planned travel months in advance and adjusted those plans to join us for the Tour. Ultimately, the public health and safety of both our guests, homeowners, and our community must be our number one priority.

We will be following strict COVID protocols. Everyone will have a temperature check upon arrival, masks must be worn properly indoors at all times, and admittance to homes will be in small groups. We will also have sanitization stations at each site as well. It is our primary goal to keep everyone safe during a wonderful Tour!

Finally, you can help us immensely by continuing to spread the word about our date change and that tickets are still available. Tickets are available at  Eventbrite.com and locally at The Pecan on Broad  and Black Belt Treasures in Camden and The Brittany House Antiques at Oak Hill.

We hope to see you all in March!

Ok since members are discounted- do I need to get a list of paid members for 2020 to the places selling tickets locally. As of now there are only a handful other than life members who have paid dues?

I was just about to contact you! Yes, please prepare a new list for locals. Officially tickets will be available locally January 24th. Lance and Pecan on Broad will have some to sell to visitors today since they are hosting several tour groups. We will also be selling tickets at the Feb 6th meeting of course so I will have membership forms ready for that and I have added an updated form to the website. Thanks so much!

Spectacular Alabama mansion built with home-design software on the market for nearly $5 million

It has 10,000 square feet of living space, a large movie theatre and indoor golf simulator, a 500-bottle wine cellar and a TV hidden behind a mirror in one of the bathrooms.

And it was all designed by a Dothan doctor using home-design software.

Craig Schmidtke began working on the design in 2008, he told the Wall Street Journal . It took seven years and some training from the software company, but he and his family have now lived in the dream home he designed for the past nine years.

According to the Journal, Schmidtke and his family moved from Colorado to Dothan in 2005. By 2007, he and his wife, Anna, began thinking of building a home.

“I started to do some research and found some homes I liked on the internet,” Craig Schmidtke told the Journal. “I thought, ‘I could draw the house myself.’”

They purchased the land for $275,000 in 2011 and the Neoclassical style home took four years to build.

Now, after nine years in their dream home, the Schmidtkes have put the spectacular mansion on the market for $4.979 million. If it sells anywhere near that, it will shatter the record of $2 million for the most expensive home ever sold in Dothan.

Schmidtke declined to tell the Journal how much they spent on constructing the home, but he said it was higher than the asking price.

“All we want is for the next buyer to love it as much as we do.”
