What are the Requirements for Canada Visa 35x45 mm (3.5x4.5 cm) Photos in 2024

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but when it comes to photos, it could be worth even more. A photo is a critical component of your application, and there are many things to keep in mind. For example, for a Canada Visa 35x45 mm photo, size is just one of the many elements that must be taken into account.

  • Photo size: "Width": 35mm, "Height": 45mm

Size and Dimensions

What size is a visa photo? Your Canada Visa 35x45 mm photo size must be 35x45 mm. This means that your head must be between 34.7 and 36.435 mm from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head.

The photo must be in color, but the colors must be natural and not altered or edited — any filters or effects that change them are forbidden.

Keep in mind that there should only be one subject in the photo, which is you. This means that no relatives, friends, or children should be in the frame. An acceptable Canada Visa 35x45 mm photo should solely represent the person applying for the visa.

Head Size and Position

Aside from the specific measurements for a visa picture size, there are a couple more things to note. The head must be centered within the frame and take up 50-69% of the image, and the photo should be taken at eye level, i.e., at the same height as the applicant’s eyes.

The photo must be clear and in focus, with no blurriness or distortion. A blurry photo is a sure way to get your application rejected.

Visa photos must have been taken within the last six months. This ensures that the photo accurately represents your current appearance (hairstyle, weight, facial hair, etc.).

Background, Contrast, and Shadows

The background color of the photo should be plain white or off-white, so avoid using any patterned or colored backdrops. Other visa photo rules include sufficient contrast and no shadows on your face or behind your head. Ensure that your face and features stand out clearly in the photo and that the lighting is even.

You can smile, but it must be a natural smile rather than a big, toothy grin. Overall, the face should have a neutral expression, so don’t force a smile if it doesn’t come naturally to you.

Your eyes should be open and visible in the photo, with no hair, clothing, or other objects obstructing them. Remember that your eyes are very important for identification, so no closing, squinting, or hiding in any way. Also, you should be looking directly at the camera lens.

Red-eye will be considered a form of obstruction. To prevent it, avoid using the camera flash if possible because the light can reflect off the back of your retina and create a red reflection in your eyes. If you must use a flash, try looking slightly away from the camera.

If you normally wear glasses, you should wear them in your visa photo, too. Make sure that there is no glare or reflection on the lenses; it’ll be better if your glasses have an anti-reflective coating. The frames shouldn’t cover any part of your eyes, especially your pupils.

In case you have a medical condition that requires you to wear dark glasses or other eyewear, you’ll need a statement from your doctor.

Your entire face, including your forehead and eyebrows, should be visible in the photo. Therefore, most types of headgear, like hats or head scarves, aren’t permitted.

However, if you wear a head covering for religious reasons, it’ll be allowed in the visa photo as long as your face is still fully visible. For hats or head scarves worn for medical reasons, ask your doctor for an official statement.

Resolution and File Size

The ideal resolution for a visa photo is 600 x 600 pixels, and the acceptable size for the file is anything less than 240 kilobytes. For the right Canada Visa 35x45 mm size, make sure to use a high-quality camera or smartphone — you’ll be able to crop it and still maintain the required resolution.

Attire, Clothing, and Dress Code

Wear everyday clothing that you would normally wear in public. This means you should avoid uniforms, costumes, or clothing that looks like a disguise. Also, choose clothing with a plain, solid-colored background over busy patterns or prints.

A beard or other facial hair is acceptable if it doesn’t prevent identification, but you should have roughly the same facial hair at the time you travel internationally.

A natural, everyday look is best for visa photos. Consider sticking to just a light foundation or concealer, little mascara, and a touch of lip color.

Studs or small hoops are a good choice, as they won’t detract from your face or hair.

The last thing worth mentioning about the main Canada Visa 35x45 mm photo requirements is quantity. That’s simple enough — you’ll typically need to provide two identical photos.

Canada Visa 35x45 mm Photo Examples

In this section, let’s analyze some examples of acceptable and unacceptable visa photos.

Sample photos:

Below are examples of correct and incorrect photos

sample_photos

Requirements for Adults

For adults, the photo size must be 35mm x 45mm, with your head measuring between 34.7mm and 36.435mm from chin to crown. The background must be plain white or light gray, with no patterns, shadows, or unevenness. Your facial expression must be neutral with both eyes open and looking directly at the camera, and you cannot wear glasses or headwear except for medical or religious reasons. Your clothing should be plain and non-reflective, without any logos or slogans.

Photos of Babies and Children

Here are the steps to help you get a successful photo of your child:

  • Find a plain, light-colored backdrop to create a neutral background.
  • Position the child facing the camera. Make sure the child is facing the camera directly, with their head straight and eyes open.
  • Get down to their eye level.
  • Get the right distance. The child should be about 4 feet (more than 1 meter) away from the camera so that you can capture their full face.

Specifics according to the Religious Situation

If you have religious or cultural reasons for wearing headwear, it is allowed as long as it does not cover any part of your face. However, you should ensure that your face is clearly visible, and that the headwear does not cast any shadows on your face.

Can I Take a visa Photo with My Phone?

If you’re taking the photo yourself, here’s what you need to do:

  • Find a plain background with no harsh shadows.
  • Set up a tripod or stand for your phone.
  • Stand or sit straight with your shoulders back and look directly at the camera.
  • Make sure your face, from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head, takes up around 50% of the photo. Having a little extra space will make it easier to adjust the dimensions.
  • Set up a timer ( iPhone or Android ) or use a remote control to take the photo.

Do I Need a New visa If My Appearance Has Changed

It depends. If your appearance has changed significantly enough that you can’t be identified from your current photo, you’ll need to get a new visa with the correct photo. For example, if you dyed your hair a completely different color, a photo with your natural hair color won’t do. But if you got a slightly different haircut, your current photo should still accurately represent your face.

US Passport Photo Size: Closing Thoughts

When it comes to taking visa photos, it’s easy to overlook the specific requirements. But these guidelines exist for a reason, and they will save you a lot of hassle and delay down the line. So, make sure you look directly into the camera with a full face and open eyes, wear normal clothes, and double-check the visa photo size requirements before sending off your application.

Also, avoid taking a selfie, wearing glasses or a uniform, using a colored background, retouching the photo or adding filters, having other people there, or using a damaged photo.

There is a way to ensure your photo is up to scratch - PhotoGov. The AI technology will accurately analyze and edit your photo and help you avoid the pitfalls of submitting an incorrect or low-quality image. With our photo service, you will take the guesswork out of the process and confidently submit your application with the perfect photo.

How to Get Your Canada Visa 35x45 mm Photos Taken

Before you snap that selfie and upload it onto our visa photo maker, there are a few things you need to know. From choosing the right backdrop to perfecting your pose, you should consider everything.

Option 1: Visit a Professional Photographer

When you can make a visa photo online for free, there isn’t much equipment needed for the task. If you have a camera, great, but a smartphone with good photo quality will also do. Just take selfies in a well-lit room or ask someone to take your picture.

Option 2: Take Your Own visa Photos

A light solid scene helps keep your face the focus of the photo. It also makes it easier for facial recognition technology to identify you. Sure, our tool can adjust a few things here and there, but it’s always better to start with a good foundation of a white background right away.

Option 3: Use online-service

Ideally, you should use natural light for a visa photo at home. Take your photo near a window or outside on a sunny day but watch out for the shadows that come from direct sunlight. If natural light isn’t available, create a well-lit environment with artificial light sources like lamps or a ring light. When positioning your sources, experiment with different placements to achieve a flattering diffused effect.

Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

You need to give your biometrics.

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

Find out who needs to give biometrics and how the new application process works.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and  where to give your biometrics .

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

Some biometrics collection sites are closed. If the site closest to you is closed, we’ll extend your deadline to give your biometrics. Find out how COVID-19 is affecting biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Find out more about inadmissibility .

Canadian Tourist Visa: A Complete Document Checklist for 2023-2024

canada tourist visa photo size 2023

The Canadian tourist visa is a wonderful opportunity for people who want to experience Canada for all the benefits it has to offer for a short period. The tourist visa is handy for holidays, sightseeing, and visiting friends or family. In essence, the eligibility criteria for the Canadian tourist visa revolve around the intent of the visit, proof of funds to sustain oneself during the stay, and assurance to return to one's home country.

Canada Tourist Visa

The Canadian tourist visa, or the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) as it is formally known, is a type of visa that allows foreign nationals to enter and stay in Canada for a limited period. This visa attempts to foster interpersonal ties and cultural exchanges among different people and cultures. Furthermore, It is essential to note that this visa strictly serves for visiting purposes only, and other activities such as working or studying require different types of visas.

In today’s article, we will be learning all about the Canadian tourist visa, so if you have any questions related to this visa, read on!

Eligibility Criteria for the Canadian Tourist Visa

In the first place, to be considered for a Canadian tourist visa, you must sufficiently fulfil several criteria. You should know if you will be able to meet them before you begin your visa application. Here are the eligibility criteria for a Canadian tourist visa application:

  • Proof of Purpose: You must be able to demonstrate the purpose/intent of your visit, whether it's for tourism, visiting family or friends, or other recreational activities.
  • Financial Stability: You should be able to prove that you have the money to cover your stay in Canada through bank statements, payslips, or even a letter from someone financially sponsoring the trip.
  • Ties to Home Country: You must prove that you have strong ties to your home country. The Canadian government wants to know that you have a reason to return to your country after your visit. This can be demonstrated through evidence of stable employment, property ownership or family commitments.
  • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Canada.
  • No Criminal Record: A criminal conviction might lead to a visa denial. So, it is essential to be truthful and provide all necessary documents, possibly including a police clearance certificate .
  • Health: Depending on where you live or have recently visited, you might need to undergo a medical examination.
  • Intent to Leave: Similar to the ‘Ties to home country criteria’, you must have a clear intent to leave Canada once your visa expires. You can prove this with a return flight ticket or an itinerary of onward travel.
  • Invitation: If you are visiting someone in Canada, you should have an invitation letter from your host detailing their relationship with you, the purpose of your visit, where you will stay, and information about your host's financial status.

Understanding and meeting these criteria will increase your chances of a successful visa application.

Types of Canadian Tourist Visas

The next stage after determining your eligibility is to decide the type of tourist visa you want to apply for based on your need. There are 3 types of Canadian tourist visas, all available to ensure you apply for the one that best matches your travel intentions. Below, we explain the various types, shedding light on their purpose and duration of stay.

  • Single Entry Visa Purpose: The single-entry visa type is tailored for travellers who want to visit Canada once at a time. It is ideal for making one-off trips, like attending an event or visiting family. Duration of Stay: The border services officer at the Canadian port of entry decides the duration, typically granting up to six months. However, once you exit Canada (except for travel to the United States or Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), you'll need a new visa to return.
  • Multiple Entry Visa Purpose: The multiple entry visa is for travellers who want to visit Canada multiple times over a longer period without reapplying each time. It's beneficial for frequent visitors or those who have family or business ties in Canada. Duration of Stay: The visa is valid for up to 10 years or 1 month before your passport expires, allowing numerous entries. However, for each visit, you are allowed to stay for six months only.
  • Transit Visa Purpose: Specifically designed for travellers who need to pass through Canada en route to another destination. This visa is common for those with layovers in Canada but not intending to stay. Duration of Stay: The Transit Visa is for short layovers, and allows you to remain in Canada for up to 48 hours. After this period, you must either continue your journey to the next destination or apply for a different type of visa to stay longer.

Documents Required to Apply for a Canadian Tourist Visa

Once you are settled on the type of visa you need for your unique situation, you need to gather the documents for your visa application. The good news is, you dont have to do that alone, we are here to help you. Here are the documents you need to provide for your Canadian tourist visa application:

  • Passport: Your passport serves as the primary identification document. Ensure it has blank pages for any necessary stamps.
  • Two Recent Passport-sized Photos: There are specific requirements for visa application photographs . Both photos should be identical, they must be 50 mm wide by 70 mm high (2 inches wide by 2¾ inches high), and the height of your face must measure between 31 mm (1¼ inches) and 36 mm (1⁷⁄₁₆ inches) from your chin to the crown of your head (natural top of head) and they must be clear. A professional photographer can help you achieve this.

  • Proof of Sufficient Funds
  • Travel Itinerary: This should include flight bookings, hotel reservations, and a list of places you intend to visit. While it's not mandatory to have every detail nailed down, a clear plan can instil confidence in your genuine intent to tour.
  • Ties to Your Home Country: Evidence can be in the form of property deeds, a letter from your employer, family commitments, or any other documents that show your obligation to return.
  • Invitation Letter From a Sponsor (if applicable).
  • A Completed IMM 5645 Form (optional): Family members who apply on behalf of the applicant or third parties need to complete this form.
  • A Completed (IMM 5475) Form : Use this form to allow Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to release your personal information to someone you choose.
  • Employer Information (optional): A letter printed on your employer’s letterhead will suffice. The letter should not be later than 3 months before you apply and it should contain all the details about your employment.
  • Medical Examination: Some countries or regions are flagged for specific health risks, and Canada requires visitors from these places to be examined to ensure public health within its borders.
  • Travel History (optional): expired/valid visa, previous work or study permits or previous passports within the last 10 years.
  • Certified Translations: If you're providing documents (like bank statements, criminal record checks, letters of employment, etc.) that are not in English or French, you'll need to seek certified translation services in Canada . This is crucial since the Canadian government requires a precise translation of all supporting documents. It's recommended to use a certified translator in Canada to ensure the translations are accepted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Visa Payment Receipt
  • Filled visa Application Form

Processing Time for a Canada Tourist Visa

The processing time for a Canada tourist visa is not the same for all applicants; it varies based on several factors and understanding these factors will help you set your expectations and plan your trip more effectively. Below are some factors that influence the visa processing duration:

Mode of Application

  • Online Application: When you apply for a Canada tourist visa online, the processing is generally quicker. The online system, facilitated by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website, is efficient as it directly feeds your information into the IRCC system. This direct digital input minimizes manual intervention, and any required documents can be uploaded instantly. Moreover, if any additional documentation or clarification is needed, communication through the online portal is swift.
  • Paper-Based Application: Traditional paper-based applications, submitted at VACs (Visa Application Centers), usually take longer. The manual handling of documents, postal delays, and the time it takes for physical files to move between departments can add to the processing time. Furthermore, if there are discrepancies or missing information, the back-and-forth communication can extend your wait.

Country of Application

The country you're applying from can significantly affect the duration. Some visa offices may have a high volume of applications, leading to longer processing times. For instance, a Canada tourist visa from Australia, due to its proximity and bilateral relations, might have a quicker turnaround compared to countries with more significant visa demand or more stringent security checks.

Complexity of the Application

A straightforward application, with all documents in order and clear intent, will be processed more speedily. In contrast, applications with missing documents, unclear travel purposes, or other complexities might require additional review or verification.

Other Factors

  • Peak Travel Seasons: During holiday seasons or peak travel times, there's usually a surge in visa applications. This increased demand can lead to longer processing times.
  • Security Concerns: If there are security concerns related to the country of origin or the individual, additional checks might be required, leading to extended processing times.
  • Technical Issues: At times, technical glitches, either in the online system or at the visa processing centres, can lead to delays.
  • Translation of Documents: The completeness and correctness of your submitted documents, including any necessary certified translations obtained through online translation services or local certified translators, can affect the processing time. Inaccurate or non-certified translations may result in requests for additional information, thereby prolonging the processing time.

The images below show the estimated processing time according to the IRCC website for an Indian applicant applying for a Canadian visitor visa from outside Canada, and the processing time for an applicant applying for the same visa within Canada for an online and a paper application.

Other Canadian Tourist Visa Requirements

  • Travel Insurance Importance: While travel insurance is not mandatory for a Canadian tourist visa, it is strongly recommended. Canadian healthcare can be expensive for non-residents, and having insurance ensures you're covered in case of any unforeseen medical emergencies. Coverage: It's advisable to obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers hospitalization, emergency care, repatriation, and more. Some policies might also cover travel disruptions and cancellations. Duration: Ensure your insurance policy covers the entire duration of your stay in Canada.
  • Language Proficiency Overview: Canada has two official languages: English and French. While a tourist visa doesn't always necessitate a demonstration of language proficiency, in some circumstances or for extended stays, it can be beneficial. Evidence: If you're from a non-English/French-speaking country and your itinerary involves activities that require communication, like attending short courses, it might be helpful to show some level of language proficiency.
  • Language Test Results (if required) Testing Bodies: If required, you'll need to provide results from recognized language tests such as IELTS for English or TEF for French. Validity: They are valid for two years from the date of the test result. Level: While there isn't a strict 'pass' level for tourist visas, higher scores can make your application more robust, especially if language skills are pertinent to your visit's purpose. To pass IELTS , you need a minimum overall score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 in each category of the Academy test.
  • Biometrics Biometrics is a modern identification method that involves taking your fingerprints and photographs. To do this, you need to book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or an Application Support Center (ASC) closest to you in your country of residence. Fee: The biometric fee is non-refundable and costs $85 per adult, in addition to your visa application fee. Validity: Biometrics data for visiting visa applications is valid for ten years. It will be used for all your future TRV applications.

Travel Visa Guide

Unlocking the world, canada visa photo size and requirements 2024 (updated).

The photos you submit during your Canada visa application are the smallest among the list of supporting documents. But that does not make them inconsequential. You cannot submit any photograph that you have in hand. The Canadian Government has defined certain photograph specifications that every visa applicant has to adhere to. Right from the size of the photograph to the expression on your face, everything should be as per the Canada visa photo requirements. If the photos are not in the right order, your visa may get rejected even if you have submitted all the proper documents. To avoid visa application rejection, follow this visa photo guide.

Things to Keep in Mind While Submitting Photos for a Canada Visa

Canada Visa Application

Photo Size : The Canada visa photo size should be 35mm X 45mm. Your entire face and the upper part of your shoulders should be visible in the photograph. The head size in the photo should be 31 mm x 36 mm (from crown to chin).

Recent Photos : The photos you send for the Canada visa application should be recent. They should not be older than 6 months. You must not send photos that were taken years ago. It should match your current appearance.

Facial Clarity: All the facial features should be clearly seen. Your hair should not cover your ears or eyes. If you wear prescription glasses, they should not be tinted. Your eyes should be clearly seen through the lens. Do not wear sunglasses while taking the visa photograph.

Head Position and Expression : You should hold your head straight while taking the photograph. Photographs with any kind of head tilt will not be accepted. Similarly, your expression should be neutral. Avoid smiling, frowning, and laughing in the photos. Keep your mouth closed, and avoid showing your teeth, too.

Color and Background : Your Canada visa photo can be in color or black and white. The background should be kept white or any other light color. There should be no patterns in the background. It should be plain.

Dress Code: There is no dress code for Canada visa photos. But it is best to dress simply, either in casual or formal clothes. Avoid flashy clothes. It is also best not to dress in white. Opt for a darker color to create contrast with the background.

Head Cover and Accessories: Head cover should be avoided, except for religious reasons. You can wear accessories, but they should not hamper or alter your appearance.

Photo Clarity: There are a few things that you should keep in mind to ensure that your Canada visa photo has the perfect clarity:

  • The photo should not be blurred.
  • There should be no shadow on the face or in the background.
  • The lighting should be perfect. It should not be over-lit or under-lit.
  • There should be no reflection in the lens of your glass.
  • The frames of your glasses should not cover your eyes.
  • The photo should not have an unnatural color.
  • The photo should not look washed out.
  • The face should not be covered with hair, a veil, or a mask.
  • Skin tone should be natural.
  • No digital alterations should be done.

Canada Visa Photo Requirements for Babies

Every person, even a kid – including newborn babies – needs a Canada tourist visa to travel to Canada. You need to apply for a separate visa for children as well. As it is not possible to follow all the rules while taking photos of babies for a visa, there is some leeway. Here are some things you should consider while submitting visa photos for babies.

  • You can keep the baby either in a lying position or a sitting position (in a car seat). Use a solid, white-colored cloth as the background in either case.
  • Your hands should not be seen in the photo if you hold the child upright.
  • Make sure the child’s face is directly facing the camera. Their mouth should remain closed.
  • The baby’s head should not be too close or far from the camera.

Guarantor Specifications

Just submitting the photos is not enough. Certain information about the applicant and the guarantor (photographer) should be provided behind the photographs. You must include the following details behind the photograph:

  • Name of the applicant
  • The date on which the photo was taken
  • The address of the photo studio (stamp of the studio or handwritten by the photographer)
  • The photographer’s name and signature ensure that the photo is that of the applicant.

The photo requirements mentioned above are the same for all kinds of Canada visas, be it Canada tourist visa, Canada transit visa , or Canada student visa. If you follow all the requirements correctly to submit the visa photos, the chances of your Canada visa approval are high. If your photos are not up to the standard, you will be asked to submit your photos again. This will lead to a delay in your visa process. So, to avoid this, give equal importance to the visa photos, just like the other documents.

Note: You do not need to worry about the background, since our online passport photo generator will automatically do it for you.

Step 3: Dress appropriately for your passport photo

Uniforms should not be worn. Put on regular street clothes for your photo.

Eyeglasses should not be worn. You should remove any sunglasses, tinted glasses, or glasses that you wear if you are taking a passport photo.

Ensure that your face is fully visible. Make sure your hair doesn't cover your face or obscure your eyes. In the case of very long bangs covering your eyebrows, pin them back with bobby pins. Although it's better to show your ears as well, that won't stop your photo from being accepted.

Passport photos don't allow hats unless they're religious headgear such as a headscarf or yarmulke.

Step 4: Pose for a passport photo

Face the camera straight on and look straight at it. Avoid tilting or rotating the head.

It is important that the shoulders are visible, and there should be enough space around the head to crop the picture.

Make sure the camera is at the same level as the head.

Step 5: Maintain neutral facial expressions

It's okay to smile in your passport photo, but the government prefers you to have a neutral facial expression.

Under the new international passport rules, it is usually not acceptable to smile or have your mouth open.

Complete Guide to Canada Visa Photo Size Requirements

Setting out on an adventure to discover the stunning scenery and lively urban areas of Canada necessitates meticulous focus on the complex particulars of the visa application process. As eager voyagers long to gain access to their idealized visions of Canada, grasping the exact specifications, make-up, and prerequisites for an impeccable visa photograph grows critical.

Understanding a Canada Visa Photo

A Canada visa photograph is a small image or set of images of the applicant that is attached to the visa application. The purpose is in identifying the person who applies for the visa so the Consulate or Embassy processing the application is aware who they are actually reviewing. For a Canada visa , you also require to submit photos of yourself should you apply. The Canadian Consulate or Embassy will examine the photos, assess if they meet the criteria, and then review the application.

Canada Visa Photo Size & Requirements

Canada visa photo size requirement

The visa photo requirements in Canada are very strict, and not meeting the standards established by the authorities can lead to your visa application being denied. These standards include particular specifications for size, resolution, and look, which are explained thoroughly as follows.

For Adults – Canada Visa Photo & Head Size

  • The frame dimensions should be 35 mm by 45 mm (1 3/8 inches by 1 3/4 inches) minimum.
  • The photos must display a complete frontal vision of the head, positioned at the center, as well as the top parts of the shoulders.
  • The head size from the chin to crown must range amid 31 mm (1 1/4 inches) & 36 mm (1 7/16 inches).
  • The crown indicates the highest head point or, if obscured via hair or headwear, the position where the top portion of the skull or head would be visible.

Should the photos fail to conform to such specifications, you will require submitting new photos before the application can proceed.

Canada Visa Photo Specifications

  • The photos must be identical and taken within the previous six months.
  • They can either be in color or black-and-white.
  • The photos should be well-defined, clear, and taken against a light-colored backdrop or a plain white backdrop.
  • If submitting digital photos, they cannot be digitally altered at all.
  • Your face should be facing the camera straight on with a neutral expression – no frowning or smiling – and your mouth closed.
  • You can wear non-tinted prescription glasses as long as your eyes are completely visible.
  • Make sure the frames do not obstruct any part of your eyes. Sunglasses are not allowed.
  • A hairpiece or other cosmetic accessory is fine if it does not disguise your normal look.
  • If you need to wear a head covering for religious reasons, ensure your full facial features are not obscured.

Photo Requirements

  • You need to submit two photos of yourself along with your application.
  • The photos should meet definite requirements, otherwise you will require submitting new photos before the application can be processed.
  • The photos should be printed on best-quality photo paper.

Photo Rules For Newborns, Infants, & Babies

Should you apply for a visa for yourself & a child, it is imperative to include separate visa photographs for the child. The photo requirements for them are akin to adults, resting on the visa type.

Canadian embassies understand the difficulty of photographing infants and children, so they are somewhat flexible about the requirements. However, applicants must still try in following the guidelines. Here are several tips for getting a perfect photo of a child or baby:

  • You can lay the baby down or put them in a car seat for the photo.
  • Use a white sheet or background so it is clear.
  • If holding the baby, keep your hands out of the picture.
  • Try to position the baby’s face in the center, with their mouth closed.

Where Can I Get My Picture Taken for a Canadian Visa?

Online with a Smartphone- With the internet, you can get this photo taken for a Canadian visa without having to go anywhere. Just use your phone’s camera to take a picture of yourself, and some websites will edit it to meet the visa requirements. While convenient, you may still want to go to a professional photographer to make sure the photo will be acceptable for the visa application.

Visit a Professional – It is recommended that you go to a professional photographer to take your headshot picture. This will ensure that all necessary requirements are fulfilled. Be sure to tell the photographer that you need the photo for a Canadian visa application, not a passport.

Automated Booth – You could also use a self-service kiosk if you do not want to or cannot go to a store. But be sure to check the machine’s settings carefully, making sure you will get the right size prints and image quality.

Photo Rejection

One common reason for a Canada visa application rejection is submitting an unclear visa photo. The Embassy may also request the applicant to upload a new or updated visa photo. Submitting incorrectly sized photos can, at best, delay your application or lead to outright rejection. Canadian Immigration authorities ensure requirements are followed. In such cases, officials contact you to explain the issue and ask you to provide new photos or restart the application completely.

Bottom Line

Photographs are an essential element to focus on when submitting an application for a Canada visa. Therefore, it is imperative to understand all the Canada visa requirements before commencing the application process. As per the Canada visa guidelines, each traveler to Canada, despite reason for travel or age, must present a current photograph. Visa officers closely examine photographs, which is why extra care should be given to this part of the visa application.

Make sure your photo is not less than 60 kB.

"Digital dimensions are often expressed in pixels or DPI (dots per inch). The physical dimensions in pixels must be at least 420 x 540."

I used visaphoto.com to convert my photo. It is having 420X540 Pixel size. Do we need to attach photographer receipt? I am finding in some people are telling to attach photographer receipt in Client Information section?? Basically I got photograph from photographer but he provided 50X 60 MM digital image size so converted it to 420X540 pixel size,

  • The photo must show a full front view of the head and tops of shoulders, with the face in the middle of the photo.

  • Image size: at least 420 x 540 pixels.
  • We accept JPEG or JPEG2000 format.

  • Image must be in colour (24 bits per pixel) in RGB colour space, the common output for most digital cameras.
  • The final frame size of the photo must be at least 35mm x 45mm.
  • If you scan an existing photo, the minimum resolution must be 600 pixels per inch.
  • Final frame size of the photo must be 50mm x 70mm.
  • Upload a colour digital photo taken by a commercial photographer (We don't accept black and white photos).
  • Scanned photos are not accepted.
  • Photo must be taken within the last 6 months.
  • Don't use a smart phone to take the photo.
  • Don't change the digital photos in any way.

Express Entry Digital Photo Guide in layman language : As many of us having query on digital photo requirement for CEC/Express entry, hence writing this blog based on my understanding. Hope this will be helpful for Community: Disclaimer: I am writing this based on my experience and understanding to help community. I am not a technical person or a photographer. If you want, You may follow this by your own choice. I will not be held responsible for the illegality or any error, inaccuracy or problem arises to your photograph. A. For the Express Entry digital photographs requirement is : Photograph Size 420 X 540, size 35 X 45 mm, Size of the Head, from Chin to crown, must be between 31 mm and 36 mm. Image Type : JPEG or JPG B. Photograph size : In Digital image, size is defined in pixels. This means width of Photograph should have 420 Pixels and height of photo should have 540 Pixels. How to check this: In computer (Window OS) : Right click on photograph file. This will open a popup window. click property and go to detail tab. In Detail tab, you can see width and height of photograph in pixels. So in detail tab, width should be at least 420 pixels and height should be 540 pixels. Another important detail is dpi. Hence, note down DPI (resolution) showing in detail tab. DPI or resolution decides photograph size when printing. C. How to check Photograph size in mm : This is decided by number of pixels per inch (DPI or Resolution). For 35 X 45 mm. Pixel per inch should be in between 300 to 305. 1 inch = 25.4 MM If Pixel is 300 DPI then image size will be : 1. Width (MM) = (420 X 25.4)/300 = 35.56 MM. Same way if DPI is 305 then width will be 34.977 MM 2. At 300 DPI Height will be, Height (MM) = (540X25.4)/300 = 45.72 MM. at 305 DPI Height will be 44.970 MM D. For changing Image resolution to 300 DPI: What to do if Property shows DPI 72, 96 or any other value but not 300. If property is not showing DPI 300 or 305 then we may easily change this using GIMP or Photoshop. GIMP is freeware (open source, free). Link: https://www.gimp.org/ 1. Open Photo in GIMP 2. Click Image in menu bar 3. Click Print size 4. This will open a popup window. 5. change X and Y resolution to 300 pixels /inch. 6. You can also see image size after changing the pixels per inch. 7. Click Ok 8. Export photo in JPEG format and save in your folder with new name. 9. Again validate image properties as described in above Heading B. I see some people mentioning online software to change resolution. You may try that also and validate converted photograph. I did not use online resolution converter, hence can not say anything on this. E. Image Size on Disk : Image Size on Disk should be above 60 KB and less than 4 MB. You may validate this in Image property following steps given in above Heading B. Check Properties >> General Tab to validate image size on Disc F. Image bits Its should be 24 Bits per pixel. You may see this following steps given in above Heading B. In Detail tab, check Bit depth. it should be 24. G. Image Type: As mentioned in Heading B, check property of image. Type of file should be JPEG or JPG. H: How to check Head size: Size of the Head, from Chin to crown, must be between 31 mm and 36 mm. For this again resolution DPI comes in picture. If resolution is 300 DPI means in a inch 300 Pixels will come. or if you convert inch to MM then 25.4 MM will be having 300 Pixels. This means at 300 DPI resolution, 1 MM will have about 11.81 pixels. This means for 45 mm picture height, where head start from top after 3 MM. In this case head (Hair) will start after 11.81 X 3 = 35.43 Pixels. So Hair should be placed at least 35 or 36 pixels down from the Top of the Photograph. In this case chin should be placed at 425 pixels from top for 36 MM. and at 366 pixels down from top for 31 MM. So above can be used as to validate and verify image you have. I : How to easily convert photograph in required format and image size: Now below are the Online image converter you may use, for image conversion to 420 X 540 Pixel size: There could be other site also but I am aware of these two based on my experience. 1. https://visafoto.com/ca_visa_photo This is good site based in Russia. I find it does good Job but bit costly. charges are about 7 CAD per photograph. 2. https://makepassportphoto.com/en/p/photo-for-canada-permanent-resident-online-2 This site is based in India, Madras. Its bit cheap about 2.99 CAD per photo. I would suggest to re-validate converted photograph. one of my friend got technical problem after conversion but site owner helped him to get it correct. Hope this will help to community and suffice all the query related to CEC/Express entry Digital photograph requirements. Best Wishes...

image of visa application form

When it comes to submitting your Canada visa application, every document is essential. Most of us concentrate on submitting a valid passport, depositing the right amount of money in the bank account, filling out the application form correctly, and sending the right invitation letter for a Canada visa . But not many pay much attention to providing clear photographs. People mostly submit passport-size photographs they already possess without even realizing that this can be why their Canada visa application is rejected. This is because the photographs you submit should fulfill certain important requirements. There are specifications regarding size, lighting, facial expressions, etc. This is a complete guide for all kinds of Canada visa photo requirements.

Requirements for Canada Visa Photo

A visa photo is required for applying for all types of Canada visa , be it a permanent resident visa, temporary resident visa, or visitor visa. Here, we will see the points you must remember while submitting your visa photographs. Photo Size: This is probably the most vital aspect of a visa photo. You cannot randomly take photos and submit them for your Canada visa application. The Canada visa photo size parameters will also depend on the type of Canada visa you are applying for. This is probably the only aspect that differs as per the different types of Canada visas.

  • Canada Permanent Resident Visa Photo Size : 70 mm height x 50 mm width
  • Canada Temporary Resident Visa Photo Size : 45 mm height x 35 mm width
  • Canada Tourist Visa Photo Size : 45 mm height x 35 mm width

Lighting and Contrast: It is inevitable to get the lighting and contrast of the photograph correct. The photo should not be too bright or too dark. The lighting should be uniform throughout the photo. The person’s face should be clearly visible. There should be no shadows.

Background : The photograph should be preferably in color, although black and white photos are acceptable. The background should be white or some other light color. The background should be plain and not have any patterns. Facial Position, Features, and Head Size: Your head must be straight, like you are looking into the camera directly. The face measurement in the photo should be 31 mm x 36 mm. The top of your shoulders should also be visible. All your facial features should be clearly seen in the photo.

Facial Expression: Your facial expression for a Canada visa photo should be neutral. Refrain from smiling, grinning, or even frowning while taking the photo. Keep your mouth closed and your eyes open. Your teeth should not be seen in the photo.

Eyeglasses : Wearing eyeglasses for your visa photograph is acceptable. But make sure the frames do not cover your eyes. The lens should not have any tint or glare. Sunglasses should be avoided. Similarly, avoid photos with red eyes.

Head Gear: There are strict rules against wearing headgear, like hats, caps, etc., while taking visa photos. You must avoid them for all reasons. But religious head gear is acceptable. Even in this case, the head gear should not cover any facial features. It should also not create a shadow on the face.

Paper Quality: Do not compromise on the quality of the photo. It should be printed on high-quality photographic paper. Do not go for heavy-weight paper.

Important Rules to Remember

Apart from the photo requirements mentioned above, you must also remember some important tips.

  • The photos should not be more than six months old.
  • You need to submit two photos, and both should be identical.
  • Your appearance in the photo should be like your current appearance.
  • It is best to wear formal or casual clothes. Avoid wearing white clothes so that they do not clash with the background.
  • Include the name, address, and stamp of the photo studio where the photo was taken on the back of the photo. You must also include the full name of the photographer and their signature. If these details are missing, it can lead to the rejection of your visa photo.
  • Mention your name on the back of the photo.
  • Digital alterations to the photo are not allowed.

Canada Photo Requirements for Babies and Children

Taking pictures of babies and children is a whole different ballgame. It is extremely difficult to keep them from moving or even controlling their facial features. Hence, some leeway is given to visa photos for kids. Here is what is expected:

  • The baby should either lie down or be seated in a car seat.
  • A white sheet should be in the background.
  • If a parent holds the child, their hands should not be visible in the photo.
  • The baby’s photo should be in the middle of the photo.
  • The baby’s mouth should remain closed.

The process of applying for a Canada visa may be overwhelming. There are so many rules to follow. But it is also important to follow them to ensure your visa application is not rejected. In case you are still confused about the Canada visa photo requirements, get your photo clicked by a reputed photo studio in your city with experience and expertise of dealing with Canada visa photographs.

How to Take Your Own Visa Photo

Taking your own visa photo can be a cost-effective and convenient option if done correctly. However, the responsibility to meet all guidelines falls on you, so pay close attention to the following steps:

Equipment Needed:

  • A high-resolution digital camera or smartphone
  • Tripod or stable surface
  • White or light-colored backdrop (a white wall or a sheet can work)
  • Good lighting (natural light or soft artificial light)

Steps to Follow:

  • Setting Up the Backdrop : Choose a location with a plain and light-colored wall. Make sure it’s free from patterns, objects, and shadows.
  • Position the Camera : Mount the camera on a tripod or a stable surface at eye level. Ensure it’s set to the highest resolution.
  • Check the Lighting : Natural daylight is best, but if that’s not possible, use soft artificial light. Make sure there are no shadows on your face or the backdrop.
  • Dress Appropriately : Wear everyday clothes that contrast with the background. Avoid uniforms, except for daily-worn religious attire.
  • Position Yourself : Stand about 1.2 meters (4 feet) away from the camera. Your face should be centered and occupy 32mm to 36mm of the photo’s height.
  • Check Your Expression : Maintain a neutral expression, with your mouth closed and eyes open. Look straight at the camera.
  • Take Multiple Shots : It’s wise to take several photos so you can choose the best one.
  • Review and Edit : Check the photos against the guidelines. If any cropping is needed, ensure the final dimensions are 35-40mm in width and 45-50mm in height.
  • Quality Check : The photo should be high-resolution, in focus, and free from any marks or smudges.
  • Save and Print : Save the photo in JPEG format. If you need physical copies, print them on high-quality photo paper.

What Are The Visa Photo Special Cases and Exemptions?

There are a few instances where the standard photo requirements might not strictly apply:

  • Religious and Cultural Head Coverings : These are allowed as long as the face is fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.
  • Medical Conditions : People with medical conditions that prevent them from meeting all guidelines (e.g., inability to keep eyes open) may be exempted. Documentation proving the medical condition is often required.
  • Infants and Toddlers : While the general rules apply, leniency may be offered, especially concerning facial expressions and the child’s gaze.
  • Diplomatic Visas : Applicants for diplomatic or official visas might have different requirements or exemptions. Check with the specific embassy or consulate.
  • Older Applicants : While the rules generally apply irrespective of age, some minor leeway may be given for issues like glare on glasses for elderly applicants.

Always confirm with the relevant authorities if you believe you qualify for an exemption.

How Many Copies of My Photo Should I Submit with My Visa Application?

For an Australian visa application in 2024, understanding the photo requirements, including the number of copies, is essential:

  • Number of Photos Required: Typically, applicants need to submit two recent, visa-sized photos along with their visa application.
  • Usage: This photo is used for identification and verification purposes during the visa processing.
  • Digital Photo Requirement: Online applications usually require only one digital photo.
  • Specifications for Digital Photos: The digital photo should comply with Australia’s specific visa photo guidelines regarding format, resolution, and size.

Can I Edit My Visa Photo?

When preparing your visa photo for an Australian visa application, it’s crucial to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • No Significant Editing: Altering your appearance in the photo, such as changing facial features or hair color, or removing blemishes, is not allowed.
  • Current and Accurate Representation: The photo should accurately reflect your current appearance, and it’s best to use a photo taken within the past six months.
  • Allowable Minor Adjustments: Slight adjustments for brightness and contrast that do not change your overall appearance might be permissible. However, these should be minimal to ensure the photo remains a true representation of yourself.

What if I have a temporary facial mark, bruise, or injury?

How long does it take for my photo to be approved or rejected?

This can vary, but if the photo meets all requirements, it should generally be approved along with your visa application. Any delays due to the photo would usually be communicated to you through the application process.

Can I smile with my mouth closed, or do I need to maintain a completely neutral expression?

A completely neutral expression is required. That means no smiling, even with a closed mouth, as it may slightly change the appearance of other facial features.
