For Kind and Country was excellent Nov 7th in Madison!!! The music, the lights, the new look of a ship...them coming down on the sails from way up high in the sky singing Amen was a stunner! Cannot tell you how much I anticipated them coming to Madison and was excited beyond excited to see them and hear them. I enjoyed that each band member came to the point of the stage bringing their instruments and being introduced & playing songs, that was unexpected and I appreciated that so much. I was six chairs away from that point of the front of the ship and saw everyone & thing up close... a highlight of my life to be there that night!!! What a special group of people, and their music is great! God has blessed us all so much!!!

I had seat 106 J 1,2,3,4...side view close to stage. I enjoyed show..my only complaint s are...the performers didn't turn toward the side audience enough. They played forward 90 percent of the time, even when walking around. The acoustics got off for the last 3 to 4 songs of the show too.while I admire the compassion international, their name is for king and country and a lot of American children are living in poverty too. Overall they are professional performers who put on a decent show..but if they are going to start a 1/2 late at least tell the audience why and when sharing the story about courtney... maybe say why she was taking the pills and the name of the medicine. ... I enjoy the sound of the band and will see them at unity in 2020..God Bless.

Chicago concert : they are theatrical performers— very high energy and lots of fog and lights! They may have sung all the songs from Burn The Ships album but didnt sing “O God Forgive Us” & a couple others I loved of theirs but didn't hear. Concert built in anticipation as the doors opened around 715 (15 min late) before we could walk into the building, but concert also was close to 40 min late in starting. No prayers during concert either which I am used to having. This stage was well used as they were running back and forth and even came up thru the crowd... they must be so tired after their performances! Enjoyed the show!

Orange crush: Boats packed with revelers tour Amsterdam canals to celebrate the king's birthday

Netherlands king's day.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Decked in the national orange color, dancing to music, and eating orange-glazed pastries, many in the Netherlands Saturday are marking King's Day , celebrating the birthday of their monarch who is enjoying a very slight rise in popularity as per a national poll.

As King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 57th birthday with his family in the northeastern city of Emmen, people across the country engaged in the traditional “free markets” held on that day, selling second-hand toys, books and other items. Others toured through the historic canals of the capital, Amsterdam as orange smoke from flares held aloft one boat drifted over vessels of all shapes and sizes jostling for space on a busy canal.

“Celebrating your birthday with your own family is the most beautiful thing you can experience. I'm very happy everybody is back,” Willem-Alexander told Dutch broadcaster NOS during a walkabout in Emmen, 190 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the Dutch capital.

An annual poll published by the NOS for King’s Day showed Willem-Alexander’s popularity edging up very slightly since last year to 6.6 out of 10. His Argentine-born wife, Queen Maxima, scored 7.1 out of 10 in the poll of 1,015 people, conducted earlier this month.

The royals’ popularity took a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic after Willem-Alexander and his family went on vacation in Greece during a partial lockdown. The royals cut short their break amid national uproar and Willem-Alexander took the unusual step of issuing a video message to express his regret and contrition for the trip.

The king's three daughters, Amalia, Alexia and Ariane have all spent time out of the country recently — Ariane has been studying in Italy while Alexia has taken a gap year to travel. The eldest and heir to the Dutch throne, Amalia, also returned ahead of the king's birthday after being forced to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam and move to Madrid following threats from the criminal underworld.

Amalia, 20, who is studying politics, psychology, law and economics at Amsterdam University, told NOS she was “extremely grateful to everybody who made it possible” for her to live in Spain, where she said she was able to enjoy more freedom than in the Netherlands.

But, she added: “I'm glad to be back.”

Creators of Sora-powered short explain AI-generated video's strengths and limitations

OpenAI's video generation tool Sora took the AI community by surprise in February with fluid, realistic video that seems miles ahead of competitors. Shy Kids is a digital production team based in Toronto that was picked by OpenAI as one of a few to produce short films essentially for OpenAI promotional purposes, though they were given considerable creative freedom in creating "air head." In an interview with visual effects news outlet fxguide, post-production artist Patrick Cederberg described "actually using Sora" as part of his work. Perhaps the most important takeaway for most is simply this: While OpenAI's post highlighting the shorts lets the reader assume they more or less emerged fully formed from Sora, the reality is that these were professional productions, complete with robust storyboarding, editing, color correction, and post work like rotoscoping and VFX.

Former King County Sheriff Dave Reichert withdraws endorsement from state GOP convention

by Ryan Simms, KOMO News Reporter

Former King County sheriff and U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert announced on July 7 he will be running for Washington governor in 2024. (KOMO)

KING COUNTY, Wash. — During a chaotic and controversial statewide Republican Party convention, leading candidate Dave Reichert announced that he was withdrawing his name from the convention’s endorsement process, while also condemning the GOP party leadership.

"It’s very disappointing to see a process break down and disintegrate into chaos," he said. " This, after (statewide GOP leaders) continually changed rules, broke rules, and twisted the process to accomplish their desired outcome."

Following his decision, Reichert pledged that he is still running for governor and seeking the votes of Republicans across Washington.

“My purpose today is to run for governor and beat Bob Ferguson in the general election," Reichert said.

RELATED | Republican Dave Reichert hones gubernatorial campaign plan during King County tour

Reichert alleged that GOP party leaders deliberately misled him and other delegates regarding his opponent's background. As reported in the Seattle Times earlier this week, Reichert's opponent, Semi Bird, was convicted in 1993 of a misdemeanor for bank larceny.

Despite assurances from party officials that Bird would be disqualified, Reichert said he was stunned when he learned Bird would still be able to wrack up a key endorsement from officials within the GOP party leadership. As a result, he told KOMO News he felt that party leadership was deliberately favoring Bird instead of him.

“It was not a fair process, it was not an honest process," Reichert said. "I go by the rules, and when the rules state ‘this is the process,' then the rules need to be followed."

Regarding the disclosure of his past legal troubles, Bird said he takes “full ownership” of his past. He said he believed the controversy surrounding his possible endorsements had been overblown.

"The story that people are trying to put out about me is that I'm some kind of tainted and tarnished, failed man. I think people are seeing the opposite," Bird told reporters during the state GOP convention.

KOMO News reached out to Democratic candidate Bob Ferguson and State GOP Chairman Jim Walsh for comment.

In a tweet, Ferguson wrote, "Anti-choice Republican Dave Reichert is a self-described “conservative” who opposes marriage equality and reproductive freedom and voted more than 37 times to repeal Obamacare. Whether or not the chaotic Republican Convention endorses Congressman Reichert, it doesn't change the fact that he is deeply out of touch with Washingtonians, and will put our fundamental freedoms in jeopardy.”

Chairman Walsh wrote, "As we’ve been saying for months, the 2024 WAGOP State Convention, is a REAL convention. Unscripted and unpredictable. It’s the voice of the delegates. They are in charge. They set the Rules. They amend the Rules. And they make the decisions. Some people love the rough-and-tumble of politics. Some don’t. Our goal is to win in November.”

Tim McGraw keeps it breezy, with a touch of soul-searching, at Milwaukee concert

king & country tour

Tim McGraw may be the country music A-list’s most devoted gym rat.

Strolling out on stage in Milwaukee Friday night sporting quite possibly the tightest shirt and jeans ever worn (seriously, his belt buckle must have been holding on for dear life), the 56-year-old McGraw put his impressive fitness regimen to full effect with a high-energy, hour-and-37-minute set.

But by the time he performed his 20th and final number of the night at Fiserv Forum, another distinctive, and even more engaging, attribute emerged: among country music superstars, McGraw may be the chief philosopher.

Not that McGraw’s “Standing Room Only” tour stop ever felt that heavy. He was light on his feet Friday — literally and figuratively — bouncing off the stage, tongue dropping out like Michael Jordan, as he cruised the runway for "Felt Good On My Lips." Screaming at one point “I love my job” with the giddiness of a lottery ticket winner that just quit his 9 to 5, McGraw’s elation heightened the joy of songs like "Something Like That," which sweetly reminisced about a first love, and "Where The Green Grass Grows," where he vividly imagines an idyllic future.

The night was light, but McGraw's stage presence kept it from feeling forgettable. The same goes for the stage production — one of the slickest setups coming out of Music Row — with lasers, crisp animations and effects, and dramatic video walls. McGraw's eight-piece band also made a memorable impression, from Dean Brown's grinning fiddle on "Just to See You Smile," to Billy Nobel's beautiful piano runs for a cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer."

But what stood out most at the "Standing Room Only" tour stop were three songs that gently preached, without pretentious self-righteousness, the value of being good to others, of making this world a better place — simple messages, but messages that have become more important as our country seemingly continues to be more divided.

Set closer "Live Like You Were Dying" felt more potent than it did when McGraw made it a hit 20 years ago, as he sang about loving deeper, speaking sweeter, offering forgiveness, and becoming a better husband and friend, in front of footage of heavenly clouds awash in sunset orange.

The tour title track (and title track of his 16th studio album released last year) saw McGraw, over Nobel's gorgeous piano work, poignantly singing about letting go of old regrets, of not letting macho arrogance get in the way of a good laugh or shedding tears. "Stop judging life by my possessions," McGraw sang softly Friday. "Start thinking 'bout how many headlights will be at my procession."

Then there was the song that may go down as the signature in McGraw's highly decorated catalogue, the Lori McKenna-penned "Humble and Kind," with McGraw's be grateful and good message spreading through the arena as fans loudly sang the outro.

"Don't take for granted the love this life gives you/When you get where you're going, don't forget turn back around/And help the next one in line."

And as the music paused, and a beaming McGraw took in the applause with appreciative nods and a tap of his chest, he was as humble as a country superstar impressively rocking an ultra-tight shirt could possibly be.

5 takeaways from Tim McGraw's Milwaukee concert, including openers Carly Pearce and Randall King

  • Anyone who thought Milwaukee had its fill of big country shows for a while clearly don’t know Milwaukee country music fans. It's been less than a week since Luke Combs performed for more than 80,000 people across two nights at American Family Field for his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" tour kickoff, but Fiserv Forum was still filled to capacity for McGraw Friday.
  • If you have a Taylor Swift card, you play it. McGraw certainly played his, incorporating his 2013 Swift collaboration "Highway Don't Care" into the setlist, complete with her piped-in vocals and appearance from the music video on the stage's giant screens. After it ended, McGraw smartly encouraged the crowd to cheer for our pop culture overlord.
  • "Yellowstone" spinoff "1883," which stars McGraw, also got a special shout-out via a 90-second sizzle reel on the show's screens that preceded encore kickoff "The Cowboy in Me." Pretty much every McGraw appearance in the clip drew a cheer — especially a scene of him kissing his real-life wife, fellow country star and "1883" co-star Faith Hill in a bathtub. (Hill and McGraw's romance was also documented on the screens as he sang "One Bad Habit" Friday.)
  • Primary opener Carly Pearce's voice was a hair shaky as she belted out "Diamondback" at the start of her set. But she had a whole lot going for her to make up for the initial shortcoming, from smart and strong been-done-wrong songs like "Next Girl" to a polished band and slick lighting that were arena-headline ready — like Pearce herself, eventually. Compensating for some initial struggles with larger-than-life sass, Pearce's voice found its bearings by third song "Easy Going" when she peppered her delivery of "Prince Charming" with a delicious, drawn-out growl.
  • Randall King had an ultra-sparse set-up for his 15-minute night-opening set — no drums, although he made sure there was lap steel. His set started earlier than scheduled, too. Despite these possible setbacks, however, King made a strong impression, especially for twangy and tender original "I Could Be That Rain."

Orange crush: Boats packed with revelers tour Amsterdam canals to celebrate the king’s birthday

king & country tour

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Decked in the national orange color, dancing to music, and eating orange-glazed pastries, many in the Netherlands are marking King’s Day, celebrating the monarch’s birthday who is enjoying a slight rise in popularity as per a national poll. As King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 57th birthday with his family on Saturday in the northeastern city of Emmen, people across the country engaged in the traditional “free markets” held on that day, selling second-hand items. Others toured through the historic busy canals of the capital. The king told Dutch broadcaster NOS that celebrating one’s birthday with family “is the most beautiful thing you can experience.”

Wild onion dinners mark the turn of the season in Indian Country

OKMULGEE, Okla. (AP) — As winter fades to spring and the bright purple blossoms of the redbud trees begin to bloom, Cherokee chef Bradley James Dry knows it’s time to forage for morels as well as a staple of Native American cuisine in Oklahoma: wild green onions.

Wild onions are among the first foods to grow at the tail end of winter in the South, and generations of Indigenous people there have placed the alliums at the center of an annual communal event. From February through May, there’s a wild onion dinner every Saturday somewhere in Oklahoma.

The bright green stalks of the onions reach a few inches above the dried leaves that crunch under Dry’s feet on a crisp morning in March as he hunts through parks and empty lots near downtown Tulsa. The land he forages straddles the Muscogee Nation and the Cherokee Nation, and he’s thinking of his elisi — grandmother in Cherokee — who taught him how to pick and cook wild onions.

“Being able to cook like this, cook the things that my grandmother would cook for strangers, that’s really cool,” Dry explains as he scans the forest floor. He’s careful not to overharvest, taking only what he needs.

“Traditionally, what I grew up with, you just boil them in a little bit of water and then fry them with scrambled eggs,” Dry said.

That’s the way wild onions are typically cooked for large gatherings, a side dish of greens with a familiar peppery bite, served alongside fried pork, beans, frybread, chicken dumplings, cornbread, and safke — a soup made with cracked corn and lye from wood ash that is common among tribal nations in the southeast, including the Muscogee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, and Seminole.

Dry likes to mix tradition with contemporary, such as using wild onions to make omelets and kimchi.

“I’ve even used them to create salsa or chimichurri for steaks,” he said.

The following Saturday morning, at least 100 people wait for the tribal community center to open in Okmulgee, the capital of the Muscogee Nation about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of Tulsa. For the second consecutive year, the community is gathering for a wild onion dinner to raise travel funds for Claudia McHenry, a tribal citizen hoping to compete at this year’s Miss Indian World Pageant in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dozens of people cook and hand out food, there is a silent auction, and a local mekko — a Muscogee spiritual leader — gives the opening welcome.

Over the last several generations, churches in Oklahoma — particularly United Methodist Churches in Native American communities — have used wild onion dinners to raise funds for church bills and annual dues, said Chebon Kernell, a mekko for his community and a UMC clergy member.

“But as the years went by, it became an enormous community event,” he said.

McHenry said seeing the community rally behind her gives her the courage she needs.

“To just see people turn out for me physically,” she said. “It gives me really a lot of good emotions and pushes me and propels me to continue forward toward my goals.”

For the next three hours, hundreds show up and pay $15 for a plate of food to send her down that path. For many, helping McHenry or the local church is the only thing that could improve upon the undeniable allure of hogfry. And in no place is that truer than the Springfield UMC in Okemah, another 35 miles (55 kilometers) south, the following Saturday.

It isn’t uncommon for people to come from Arkansas, Kansas, or Texas for a piece of that community’s famed fried pork and a heap of wild onions. Some travel that far because they’re part of the Muscogee diaspora. Others simply follow the church’s signs down a dusty gravel road until the canopy of trees opens up to an endless field of waving grass, still copper from the winter’s rest.

For nearly two decades, hundreds have lined up on the porch of the church’s small gathering hall on the first Saturday in April for a plate of food. And every year you’ll find Carol Tiger there, elbow deep in a bowl of frybread mix.

Everyone calls Tiger the head cook.

“I just let them know what we have to do,” she said, sending a wave of laughter through the kitchen.

In past years, Tiger and other church elders would take their grandkids to pick onions, but this year they’re expecting 500 to 600 hungry people, so they purchased their onions cleaned and chopped for $40 a gallon. The families of the church also contribute a gallon each.

Elders tell stories from the rocking chairs on the porch, children play in the woods nearby, and vendors sell beadwork and clothing. The small field around the church has been cut and edged and is full of vehicles with tribal tags from across the state. Men fry pork in a giant pan over a fire outside, while women fill the dining hall with the warmth of home-cooked food.

After clearing their plates, attendees enjoy a piece of cake or a bowl of grape dumplings — a dessert traditionally made from wild grape juice that today is often made with frozen juice and canned biscuits. They stay well into the afternoon, talking and eating, certainly sad when it’s time to go.

But it’s mid-April, and wild onion dinner season isn’t over yet. There’s always next Saturday, a little further down the road.
