WATCH THE RACE ONLINE + ROAD CLOSURES

The race will be broadcast live between 6am - 12:30pm on Sunday, 10 October 2021, on the  The Cape Town Cycle Tour Facebook page . If you are going to be out and about, here’s how to avoid the road closures .

COVID-19 SAFETY FOR PARTICIPANTS

Due to Covid-19 protocols and safety measures, all cyclists need to be fully vaccinated or able to undergo rapid antigen testing. Participants who are fully vaccinated, need to bring their proof of vaccination card and ID. Those who are unvaccinated, will need to undergo an antigen test, which costs R250.

WHERE TO WATCH AND WHAT TO DO

Edinburgh Drive Edinburgh Drive also known as Wynberg Hill is an early test of the riders’ mettle because of its steep gradient. Your support will be most welcome, especially to those who at that point feel that they may not have trained enough for the race. Getting There: It’s a pretty long slog but you can catch a train to Plumstead and walk to the top. Alternatively, you can drive there and find roadside parking, or park in the lot opposite Victoria Hospital. Glencairn Beach This is a flatter part of the route where racers normally maintain a quick pace. Watch them zoom by and spur on those who may still be feeling flustered after Edinburgh Drive. If it’s a scorcher outside, you can head down over the train tracks to take a dip in the tidal pool . Getting There: Road closures rule out using your car to get here. Instead, grab a train to Glencairn Station and make a day of it. Simon’s Town It’s a pretty hectic slog along this section and, depending on the time you’re there, most riders will be going pretty slow, some may even be struggling. Help them along with words of encouragement and maybe even a cold Coke (although there is a water point in the vicinity). While you’re there, why not set some time aside to explore Simonstown. Getting There: As with Glencairn, driving here is out of the question, but a select amount of trains go all the way to Simonstown. Noordhoek With the biggest test lying just ahead (Chapman’s Peak) every rider will be a little nervous heading through this section, especially beginners who have no idea what they’re getting into. A little “you can do it” will go a long way to give them the motivation to take on the challenge. If you get tired of cheering the cyclists on why not head to  Noordhoek Farm Village which is home to the famous Cafe Roux .

Getting There: With no train station and no escape from road closures, this vantage point is best saved for those within walking distance of Noordhoek's main road. Hout Bay: Tired, but relieved cyclists will be coming through the Hout Bay area after mastering the gruelling Chapman’s Peak. The experienced ones will know what lies ahead, the inexperienced may only have heard the legends. You can head to the Bay Harbour Market for a break between clapping. Getting There: If you’re a smart driver and use the open sections of the M4 and M3, you can find and access a good viewing point with your car, especially if you live nearby. Suikerbossie This is what lies ahead of Hout Bay. It’s neither steep nor long, but Suikerbossie has become a legend along this route because most riders are spent after what came before. Your support is probably most needed here. It’s close to the final stretch, so a little reminder of this could provide some motivation.

Getting There: Strictly for those who live close by.

Sea Point The final stretch: jubilant riders will only be thinking about the finish line. They may or may not need your support anymore, but it’s satisfying to see them flying along after the long and hard route is done and dusted. You can do this while having a drink and a bite to eat at Strolla Restaurant and Bar.

A CHANCE TO RACE AFTER ENTRY HAS:  HOW TO SUBSTITUTE If you miss out on an entry, your other option is to substitute another rider. It’s important to do this properly because if you don’t, you and the rider you’re substituting for can be banned from entering again.

cape town cycle tour live stream

Packing Your Bike This isn’t as simple as it looks. Here are some pointers on getting your bike into a box or bag:

Turn the handlebars parallel to the frame This is to make the bike streamlined enough to fit into a regulation bike bag or box. You can also remove the handlebars to make it fit, but that creates extra admin when you arrive and can mess up your bike fit.

Lower the saddle This will ensure that the bike fits the height dimensions of a standard box or bag. You may want to go for a quick bike fitting when you get to Cape Town to get the saddle height perfect again. Remove the pedals Like turning the handles, removing the pedals is for width reasons. Deflate your tyres Fluctuating air pressure levels in plane cabins can make tyres gain pressure, this causes tyre burst and pinched flats mid-flight. Letting out some air helps to avoid that. Place the bike in a bag, box If you follow the procedure above, your bike should fit perfectly into your bike bag or box.

What can be checked in as luggage If you’re bringing all your own stuff, you’ll need to know what you can and can’t check into luggage. Here are the regulations commonly used by airlines.

  • Inflation pumps filled with division 2.2 carbon dioxide non-flammable gas will be accepted for transportation as checked baggage only. Make sure you declare this when checking in for your flight.
  • Wheel bags cannot be carried as hand luggage and need to be checked in as checked baggage. The standard checked baggage allowance will apply.
  • If you do have more baggage than you are allowed, you can pay for the extra baggage beforehand or at the airport.
  • Spare wheels need to be packed properly before they are checked in. At check-in, the spare wheels will be tagged with a limited release tag.
  • Speedometers and any other electronic equipment, as well as helmets and shoes, can be taken on as hand luggage.

2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour: Racing to Establish or Expand a Legacy

cape town cycle tour live stream

8 Mar 2024 - Press Release

The 46 th edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour will once again be more than just a bicycle race around the world’s most beautiful city. For the majority of the 27 500 competitors taking on the 109 kilometres course it will be a celebration of health, friendship and fellowship. An annual fun ride along a spectacularly scenic route. There are those for whom the Cape Town Cycle Tour is far more important too, the elite racers who seek to join the pantheon of greats who have won the illustrious title before.

Victory on the second weekend in March is one of the few ways for cyclists to step out of the insular industry and into the greater South African sporting limelight. The race made household names of Hennie Wentzel, Ertjies Bezuidenhout, Willie Engelbrecht and Cathy Carstens in its early years. More recently Robbie Hunter, Anriette Schoeman, Cherise Willeit, Kim le Court, and of course, Nolan Hoffman have gained fame through victory.

In 2024 the elite men’s race can be billed as a battle for legacy, while the elite women’s race will see a first-time winner. For the men the surprise success of Chris Jooste, in 2023 will probably impact how the race is controlled. Jooste, along with Andries Nigrini, Jaedon Terlouw and Daniel Loubser made a breakaway stick, holding off the peloton of favourites by a slender 7 seconds. Lightning is unlikely to strike, from a break, for the third time in successive years; but cycling can also be a strange sport and if the favourites teams are represented in a break the race could see an unlikely winner once more.

The more likely scenario is that Hoffman, at 38 years of age, will do his utmost to win a record equalling fifth title. It has however been three years since his fourth victory, in October 2021 when the race was rescheduled due to the Covid Pandemic, and the veteran racer’s younger rivals may have an edge over him now. The foremost of these is 2022 Cape Town Cycle Tour winner, Marc Pritzen.

The Honeycomb rider also has a formidable team to support his efforts with Tristan Nortje, who was second in the road race at the South African National Championships a month ago, the other stand-out talent in the ten-rider strong team. If Honeycomb are able to help Pritzen to victory, the 24-year-old will take a major step towards becoming the standard bearer for this decade’s star riders at the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Pritzen’s 2022 win came from a powerful early break which were able to remain clear, partly because of their own strength and partly due to the wet weather. One suspects that Honeycomb will have to exploit the blustery conditions predicted in order to enable Pritzen to take a reduced group to the line. He will have to be cautious of the make-up of that group however. 2022 runner-up Sascha Weber could well still be smarting for revenge, while Alan Hatherly and, Namibian Road Champion, Alex Miller are two men who will be tough to beat in a reduced group sprint.

Under 23 talent, Tyler Lange – whose father Malcolm Lange won the race in three times between 1998 and 2010 – is also a rider to watch. As is 2023 runner up Terlouw, who like Jooste and his RKC Collective teammate Kent Main will be searching for a spot in a dangerous group which may surprise the favourites. The inaugural Under 17 race winner, Nicky van der Merwe steps up to the full distance this year and is, along with Travis Rademan-Ludeke, confident of upsetting the more established Cape Town Cycle Tour campaigners.

In the elite women’s race the absence due to international racing commitments of four of last year’s top five has created an opportunity for a new winner to step up. Since the move to a separate elite women’s race in 2018, which starts in Fish Hoek and take in the final 78 kilometres of the normal route, only Willeit and Le Court have won the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Now Vera Looser, Carla Oberholzer and Tiffany Keep have a great opportunity to write their names in the history books.

The Namibian Road Champion, Looser, has the best previous results of the trio. In 2023 she was pipped to the line by Le Court. Oberholzer is riding high on confidence following a sprint victory, for the South African Champion’s title, over Hayley Preen and will be tough to beat. While Keep has matured in leaps and bounds as a rider, and now races for the DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK Continental Cycling Team. In 2019 Keep was arguably the strongest rider in the race, but paid for spending too much time on the attack, five years later she will know to reserve her efforts for key moments.

Looser, Oberholzer and Keep will not have it all their own way however. Iranian mountain bike champion Faranak Partoazar makes her Cape Town Cycle Tour debut, for the Pump for Peace team, while Customized Cycling Pirtek will have options in the form of Kelsey van Schoor and Melissa Kretzinger. Perennial challenger, S’annara Grove could upset the favourites as could the freshly crowned South African Junior Road Race Champion, Errin Mackridge.

To watch the racing action, tune in to the live broadcast on the Cape Town Cycle Tour website, www.capetowncycletour.com , from 06:00 on Sunday, 10 March. Regular updated from the course can also be found at @CTCycleTour on Twitter, while the @ctcycletour Instagram and Cape Town Cycle Tour Facebook pages will share highlights from throughout the day.

Cape Town Cycle Tour co-founder pushes Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe rail-to-trail

A co-founder of the Cape Town Cycle Tour is petitioning to transform the old George-to-Knysna railway route into a cycling trail.

Also read: Chemistry lecturer cycles 600km to raise funds for struggling Stellenbosch students

John Stegmann, a Plettenberg Bay resident, launched a petition on Change.org and submitted a formal proposal to the Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) on 22 March 2024.

‘TFR had not disclosed details of any legitimate proposal/s received nor had it formally ruled,’ he wrote in his petition.

‘As the door was not shut and, in the interests of the region and the country, I believed that TFR ought to consider allowing the corridor to be converted for use by the public for non-motorised mobility.’

In his proposal, Stegmann noted that the Outenique Choo-Tjoe needed to be subsidised by R10 million the year before it closed. However, he is offering a compromise of a steam park around Rondevlei near Sedgefield.

Cape {town} Etc discount:  Looking for things to do in the city, at half the price? He also argues that a cycle trail would make Transnet a ‘quick profit’ by selling the tracks. These funds could then be used to build the trail. He also believes that the trail would be manageable for average cyclists.

‘If the rail corridor between George and Knysna is preserved for its value to the region and the country as a safe route for non-motorised mobility, cyclists of every description (local and international) will be drawn to it,’ Stegmann told Sunday Times .

‘Micro-to-macro businesses will be created; it can be extended to Plettenberg Bay and eventually to Gqeberha and become one of South Africa’s major tourist attractions, being used by 200 000 or more cyclists each year.’

During the mid-1970s, Stegmann helped arrange the Big Ride-In to convince the City of Cape Town’s council that cyclists lacked safe facilities. In 1978, the Cape Town Cycle Tour kicked off with more than 500 cyclists, growing exponentially each year to nearly 30 000 in recent times.

The Western Cape’s chief director of sport and recreation, Lyndon Bouah, highlights that the cycle tour attracts families and generates approximately R500 million annually.

Find you perfect set of wheels with these incredible deals on cars for under 100k. Find car listings  here .

Furthermore, Stegmann believes the tour could generate much more capital than the steam train that only travelled along the Southern Peninsula train line from Cape Town to Fish Hoek.

He is also not in favour of using the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe to remove refuse. ‘Investing capital in reopening the rail for the steam train to cart refuse will be a regrettable commitment because the future demands that refuse be treated at source to reduce waste and reclaim as much as possible in the circular economy, with the target of zero waste.

‘Investment in waste treatment will create much-needed jobs that will upskill the workforce and the community in identifying and processing waste.’

Since 1996, Stegmann has advocated for a George-to-Gqeberha trail, detailed in his self-published book, The Green Machine.

According to TFR, the tender process should be complete by the end of June. ‘The open market procurement process for the George-Knysna branch line is at an advanced stage. To this end, the process has undergone a number of governance approvals. It is now at the bid negotiation stage.’

‘It is imperative to note that governance rules do not allow us to communicate with anyone about pending or open procurement events. TFR can communicate with the parties only after the process has been concluded.’
