For qualifying Chase cardholders, the easy-to-use Chase Travel℠ portal offers a flexible and convenient way to book hotels, flights, rental cars, cruises and more using points or a combination of points and cash.

What is the Chase travel portal?

A favorite among frequent travelers for its versatility and redemption options, Chase Ultimate Rewards® (UR) is one of the major transferable credit card rewards points programs and UR points are Chase’s flexible rewards currency.

The Chase travel portal works much like an online travel agency (OTA) similar to Orbitz or Priceline where you can book hotels, flights, cars, activities and cruises. But unlike a traditional OTA, with the Chase travel portal you can book travel with your Chase card’s rewards points, cash or a combination of the two.

Who can use the portal?

A handful of exclusively Chase-issued credit cards grant cardholders access to the Chase travel portal, but how you can utilize the portal and the value you can receive is card-specific.

The following credit cards are the only cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points outright:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve®
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card * The information for the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

But if you or a household member own at least one of the cards above, the rewards on the following cash-back credit cards can be combined with any of the cards listed above and used as Chase Ultimate Rewards points:

  • Chase Freedom Flex℠ * The information for the Chase Freedom Flex℠ has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited®
  • Ink Business Cash® Credit Card
  • Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card

And while the points earned cannot be combined with any of the UR-earning cards, the following pay-in-full card does have access to the Chase travel portal:

  • Ink Business Premier℠ Credit Card * The information for the Ink Business Premier℠ Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Is the portal worth using?

It’s often said that having the right travel credit card is important, but knowing how to redeem your miles and points can be as paramount as which card you use to earn them. However, not everybody has the patience or interest to learn the intricacies of different rewards programs to maximize the value of every mile and point.

So while transferring UR points to individual loyalty programs is still one of the best ways to get the most cents per point at a 1:1 basis, for those who value simplicity, the Chase travel portal offers a straightforward way to book travel, earn and redeem points and still receive a great deal. Best of all, you won’t be limited by any loyalty program or award space availability.

When transferring points, the minimum you can transfer is 1,000 points to the following UR travel partners with either the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Ink Business Preferred cards:

Regardless of how you’re using the Chase travel portal, it’s worth considering the pros and cons.

  • The standard rate for Ultimate Rewards points when redeemed for travel through the Chase travel portal is 1 UR point = 1 cent, but can be worth significantly more with the UR-earning cards. The Chase Sapphire Reserve gets a redemption value of 1.5 cents per point through the Chase Travel℠ portal while the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Ink Business Preferred cards each get 1.25 cents per point.
  • Since you’re not limited to any loyalty programs, you can use your UR points to book boutique hotels that you’d otherwise only be able to book with cash.
  • Flights booked through the Chase travel portal can earn frequent flyer miles and can be used toward advancing your elite status.
  • You can earn a substantial amount of bonus points when booking through the Chase portal depending on the card you’re using.
  • You can use a combination of points plus cash to purchase your reservation.
  • Hotels booked through the Chase travel portal do not earn hotel points or credits toward elite status. Any elite status perks you’d receive if booking directly with the hotel will likely be forgone.
  • If you experience any issues while traveling, you’d have to go through Chase to resolve the issue. For example, if there is a problem with your hotel reservation, you’ll have to contact a Chase representative for help resolving it since you didn’t book directly with the hotel. Dealing with a middleman during travel emergencies is less than ideal and something to be wary of when considering booking through the portal.
  • Southwest Airlines flights do not show up in the UR travel portal, but can be reserved by calling the Chase Travel Center at 855-233-9462.

How to book travel through the Chase travel portal

You can access the Chase travel portal by logging into your Chase account and clicking on the Rewards balance on the right or by going to the Chase Ultimate Rewards website .

Once you’re logged in, if you have more than one UR-earning Chase card, you’ll be asked to select one to proceed with — a crucial step as each card has different earning and redemption rates.

chase travel rewards

After clicking on your selection, you will be taken to the Ultimate Rewards dashboard. If you click on the Earn / Use dropdown button, all of your Ultimate Rewards options will be presented. Click on Travel to proceed to the portal.

chase travel rewards

Once in the travel portal, you’ll  have the option of selecting the type of booking you’d like to make.

chase travel rewards

From there, your user experience will be similar to any other OTA where you can search your travel options.

Because the Chase travel portal doesn’t limit you to transfer partners or loyalty programs, you’ll be able to search almost all major airlines. One notable exception is Southwest Airlines, which is still bookable using UR points but will require a phone call to the Chase Travel Center to reserve your flight.

chase travel rewards

One difference compared to a traditional OTA is the option to buy in cash, points or a combination of both.

chase travel rewards

If you’re short on points or if you’d like to offset the cash price with some points, you’re given the option to choose how to pay.

chase travel rewards

After that, you’ll be prompted to enter your traveler information and you’re all booked. However, you will have to log into the specific airline with your reservation code in order to reserve seats.

Booking hotels through the Chase travel portal is a similar process. And with the portal’s easy-to-use search function, you can find boutique hotels that would otherwise be unbookable with loyalty-program-based points.

chase travel rewards

However, if you have elite status with a hotel chain, you’ll want to book directly rather than going through the Chase portal in order to access status benefits and have that hotel stay count toward achieving a higher status. Or, you can transfer UR points to one of three UR hotel loyalty program transfer partners, including Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt or IHG One Rewards.

Rental cars can also be booked through the portal in a similar fashion. And as in many cases, being aware of which card you’re booking your car rental with can make a big difference in case of an accident as both the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred offer primary car insurance , an uncommon, money-saving benefit, which saves you from having to file a claim with your private car insurance carrier first.

chase travel rewards

A quick guide to the Chase Ultimate Rewards program

As some of the most sought-after flexible points, Chase Ultimate Rewards can be accrued through several avenues. The most lucrative way is by applying for Chase credit cards and earning their respective welcome bonuses — but be wary of Chase’s 5/24 rule , which blocks applicants from opening a Chase credit card if they’ve opened five or more cards from any issuer in the past 24 months.

If you have two Chase cards that earn UR points, you can then transfer the rewards earned to the card that carries the most redemption value. For example, you can open the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and then the Chase Freedom Flex and move any points earned on the Flex card to the Preferred card, which has a boosted value of 25% more when redeemed through the portal.

Looking to add more than one new credit card to your wallet? Here’s why you shouldn’t apply for multiple cards at the same time.

Outside of regular credit card spending, you can also grow your Ultimate Rewards pile by using the Chase shopping portal. By adding just one extra step to your online shopping, you can earn bonus points for your future travels.

While transferring points to partners is one option to maximize the value of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points, there are numerous other ways to use the Chase Ultimate Rewards program to your benefit. Whether it’s redeeming your points as a statement credit for eligible, rotating categories throughout the year through the “Pay Yourself Back” feature, booking special dining experiences with your points or using the portal to book your next vacation, the Chase Ultimate Rewards program’s flexibility makes it a great option regardless of your lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) are Chase Bank’s flexible rewards currency that can be earned on several of its credit cards.

The Chase travel portal can be accessed through the Chase app or the Chase website. After logging in, you can select the option to book travel.

You can use your Chase travel credit, like the up to $50 annual hotel statement credit offered by the Chase Sapphire Preferred, by booking your travel through the Chase travel portal. The statement credit will automatically be applied to your account within one to two billing cycles after your purchase posts to your account — up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50.

You can redeem your Chase Ultimate Rewards directly through the travel portal with almost all major airlines with the exception of Southwest Airlines, which can be booked over the phone. With Southwest, select the flight you want at Southwest.com and then call Chase Travel Center at 855-233-9462 with the flight details.

The value you receive from the Chase travel portal will depend on the credit card you’re using. For example, if you have either the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Chase Sapphire Preferred, your points are worth either 50% or 25% more, respectively, when redeemed for travel.

Chase Ultimate Rewards is one of the major transferrable points programs and a favorite among many travelers. Points are easy to earn and can be transferred to many different hotel and airline partners. But you can also book travel directly through Chase’s travel portal using Ultimate Rewards points.

Booking travel through the Chase Travel portal is simple and can be a great way to use your points.

We’ll show you everything you need to know about how to redeem your points, including the benefits, how to know what your points are worth, and how to book airlines, hotels, and more through the Chase Travel portal.

Why Book Travel Through the Chase Travel Portal?

Generally, you can get maximum value from your Chase Ultimate Rewards points by transferring them to the Chase airline and hotel partners , so why are we talking about using points through a travel portal? While it’s true that the only way to get the highest value redemptions is by transferring, there is still a lot of value to be had by booking directly through the Chase Travel portal.

Flexibility is not often available with points bookings. Unlike an award booking, booking through Chase Travel is like using any other online travel agency (OTA) . There are no blackout dates or limited inventory award seats. If a flight or hotel is available, you can book it with points through the Chase travel portal.

One of the major bummers of booking flights with frequent flyer miles is that you don’t earn miles on award bookings. You can end up doing a lot of travel without earning miles. However, any booking you make with your Chase Ultimate Rewards points through the Chase Travel portal will earn frequent flyer miles and accrue status points. Unfortunately, hotel and car rental bookings still won’t earn points.

We have talked to so many people over the years that love the idea of collecting points and miles but don’t want to deal with the hassle. While many don’t mind putting a little work into getting an awesome redemption, others are just looking for a simple way to book travel and hopefully save some money in the process.

That’s where the Chase Travel portal comes in. With this method of redeeming points, there is no transferring, comparing points values, blackout dates, limited award availability, or multiple travel accounts. You only have to deal with 1 type of point and 1 travel portal but can still retain many of the benefits of collecting points and miles in the first place.

Bottom Line: You can book flights, hotels, rental cars, activities, and cruises through the Chase Travel portal.

If you like the idea of using the Chase Travel portal, you’ll need a credit card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points:

What Are Chase Ultimate Rewards Points Worth?

It’s easy to earn lots of Chase Ultimate Rewards points , but do you know how much they are worth ? If you’re transferring your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to a travel partner, their value will go up or down depending on the type of redemption.

However, when you are booking your travel directly through Chase’s travel portal, each Chase Ultimate Rewards point has a set value that won’t change . The credit card you have will determine the value of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

If you have multiple Chase credit cards, it makes sense to transfer your points to the card with the most valuable redemption rate. The only exception to this is the Ink Business Premier card because points earned on this card can’t be transferred to any other card.

1. To transfer your points between 2 cards, log on to the Chase dashboard and select Combine Points .

When booked through the Chase Travel portal, these properties offer the following benefits:

  • Daily breakfast for 2

The Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection properties are reservation-only bookings. You’ll make your reservations online and payment doesn’t happen until you check out from the hotel. These bookings will not take Chase Ultimate Rewards points as payment.

You’ll notice that only cash prices are listed for cruises, however, they can be booked using your Chase Ultimate Rewards points, too.

Hot Tip: You can book a cruise through Chase Travel but you’ll have to call to make your reservation as they can’t be booked online.

How Do the Prices Compare to Other Sites?

Are you getting a good deal by booking through Chase? Let’s look at how the prices available through the Chase Travel portal stack up to other OTAs and search engines including Hotwire , Kayak , and Expedia .

We did some flight searches and found there’s no clear-cut pattern on prices between the Chase portal to other websites.

Example #1: Round-trip flight between Philadelphia (PHL) and San Francisco (SFO) for 1 person in economy.

We searched this route in the Chase travel portal and the cheapest option was a flight that was split between Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines for $526.20. This worked out to be the cheapest price we found, and Priceline had the same low price. Expedia and Hotwire both charge booking fees, making the price a little higher. Each airline’s own website couldn’t split the itinerary between different airlines, so those ended up being much more expensive.

If you are in doubt or would like to check prices yourself, Kayak is a great place to start. Kayak will show you prices for a flight on all of the OTAs as well as the airline’s website. It’s a great one-stop shop to compare flight prices.

Example #2: Round-trip flight between New York City (JFK) and Paris, France (CDG) for 1 person in economy.

We searched this route in the Chase travel portal and the cheapest option was a flight that was split between American Airlines and British Airways for $689.78. This wasn’t the overall best price we found, though. That award goes to Expedia and Priceline.

Hot Tip: You will earn frequent flyer miles when you book your flight through the Chase Travel portal.

Example #1: Here’s how prices looked for a week-long stay at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa in Mexico for 2 people including all taxes and fees. The $291.55 resort fee can’t be paid with points.

In this example, the best cash rate by far was through Marriott. However, if you wanted to pay with points, booking with Chase Ultimate Rewards points through the travel portal would be your best bet.

Keep in mind that Marriott doesn’t have an award chart, so different time periods can have different point costs. A 7-night stay at this hotel can dip down to 240,000 points for a 7-night stay. If you’re going to pay for your hotel stay in points, it’s always smart to calculate how many points it would cost to book through Chase versus transferring points . This information can help you make the best and least expensive choice.

Hot Tip: You won’t earn hotel loyalty points when booking a hotel through Chase and any elite status you have may not be recognized.

Example #2: Let’s look at an example of a hotel that doesn’t have a loyalty program. We priced out a 2-night stay at Almond Tree Inn Hotel in Key West, FL for 2 people. The highest prices were direct via the hotel with all other websites surveyed being cheaper.

Here’s how the prices stacked up:

Chase’s low price matched the other online travel websites and was actually lower than the hotel’s own website, so it would be a great option in this case. It also affords the opportunity to use points for a hotel that doesn’t have its own loyalty program.

In many cases, car rental prices found through the Chase Travel portal were similar to prices found on the rental agency’s own website.

The main difference in booking through Chase vs. directly through a car rental agency is that the car rental agency often has the ability to book the car without paying up front. With the Chase portal, you will be paying at the time of booking and there may be change or cancellation fees if you need to modify your reservation.

In both of these examples, Chase Travel didn’t offer the lowest price, however, that won’t always necessarily be the case. Of course, the advantage of booking through Chase is the ability to use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points. It’s always a good idea to price out your car rental on a few different websites before booking to ensure you’re getting the best price.

Chase actually offered the lowest prices on activities for both examples:

Other Ways To Use the Chase Travel Portal

The Chase Travel portal also helps you earn bonus points.  With the Shop through Chase feature, you can earn extra Ultimate Rewards points through your online shopping.

Shop through Chase

Just click Earn Bonus Points in the top search bar to access the shopping portal. Click on a featured store or search for a specific one. Then simply click through the portal to your website of choice to make your purchase. Your bonus points will be added to your Chase Ultimate Rewards points total within 3 to 5 days in most cases.

Did you know you can use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to make purchases at Amazon and PayPal? Click on Pay with Points in the top search bar, then select either Amazon or PayPal to enroll and shop.

Chase Pay with Points

Unfortunately, the redemption value you get when shopping through Amazon or PayPal is pretty bad — only 0.8 cents per point. While it’s great to have this as an option, we don’t recommend using points to shop at Amazon or PayPal as your main use of Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Bottom Line: The value of using your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to shop through Amazon or PayPal isn’t great: you will only get 0.8 cents per point!

By clicking on Apple in the main search box in your Ultimate Rewards account, you can use your Chase points to make purchases. Normally, you’ll get 1 cent per point in value when using your points for Apple purchases, but there are occasional bonuses offered to get a better redemption rate.

Shop Apple through Chase Ultimate Rewards

You can also redeem your Ultimate Rewards points for cash-back. To do this, simply select Cash-back from the main search bar at the top of the screen. You will then be able to see choose how many points you’d like to redeem for cash-back at a value of 1 cent per point .

Cash back through Chase

You can choose to have your cash direct deposited into a checking or savings account or as a statement credit. The deposit or statement credit will be posted within 3 days.

Bottom Line: Your Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1 cent each when redeemed as cash-back. We do not recommend this as a primary redemption option because you can get more value via the Chase Travel portal, and a lot more when transferring to airline and hotel partners.

This is a really cool section of the Chase Travel portal. When you click on Experiences in the main search bar, you’ll see a list of exclusive events, preferred seating, and other offers for select Chase cardmembers.

Chase Experiences

Experiences can be purchased with a credit card or with points. You will get 1 cent per point in value when redeeming points for experiences. Some experiences are only available to cardholders of specific cards so be sure to check all of your cards if you have more than 1 to make sure you don’t miss anything.

If you prefer gift cards, you can purchase them through the Chase Travel portal using points. Just click Gift Cards in the main search bar to get started. From here, you will be able to scroll through all of the available gift cards. You’ll get 1 cent per point in value, with occasional sales offering better redemption rates.

Buy gift cards through Chase Ultimate Rewards

Hot Tip: Points redeemed for gift cards have a 1-cent per point value. However, you might notice some cards offer discounts, so there is the opportunity to get a bit more value!

Another way to use your Ultimate Rewards points is through the Pay Yourself Back feature. This allows you to redeem your points for a statement credit for purchases in select categories. The current categories include groceries, dining, select charities, credit card annual fee, internet, cable, phone, and shipping and the redemption value varies by card.

Transferring points to travel partners is the best way to get the most value out of your points . By transferring, you can potentially get 2, 3, or more cents per point value.

Chase Airline Transfer Partners

Chase Hotel Transfer Partners

To transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to any of the above airline and hotel partners, log on to your account and click on Transfer To Travel Partners in the top search box. Choose your airline or hotel and then select Transfer Points . You’ll need to fill out your frequent flyer information or hotel loyalty membership number to complete the transfer.

How To Transfer Points To Hotel and Airline Parters

Bottom Line: You can currently transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to 14 different hotel and airline partners.

What are travel rewards cards & why get one.

chase travel rewards

Travel rewards credit cards can help you earn rewards and discounts that you can redeem toward travel. In some cases, they can even score you free nights at your favorite hotels or free tickets on airlines. From complimentary upgrades to first class seats, exclusive airport lounge access to free meals, these cards offer a bounty of benefits and rewards that can leverage your spending habits.

Here are some important things to know about travel credit cards, as well as the benefits that may matter most to you when reaching for your dream destinations.

What are the benefits of travel credit cards?

With general travel, airline or hotel credit cards , you can enjoy benefits designed to enhance your travel experience, such as miles, points that you can redeem toward flights or hotel room upgrades, and no foreign transaction fees. Types of travel rewards cards:

General travel cards

A general travel credit card will provide you flexibility in how you earn and redeem your reward points. With these travel cards, you'll have a chance to earn points through everyday purchases and earn even more points through travel and dining purchases. Some cards offer travel benefits that can make your trips more convenient, such as zero foreign transaction fees (which helps you save money on international purchases) and TSA pre-check global entry.

Airline credit cards

An airline credit card is a great option if you're loyal to a specific airline chain. When your reward points are tied to an airline's loyalty program, you have the opportunity to earn a generous amount of reward points that can quickly add up. You'll also have the chance to earn points or miles that you can redeem for plane tickets, and you might get to enjoy great perks like seat upgrades, early boarding, free checked bags, and more.

Hotel credit cards

Hotel credit cards may offer accelerated reward point accumulation when you use the card to book rooms with the respective hotel. You may also get access to convenient benefits offered exclusively to cardholders. These benefits might include complimentary breakfasts, hotel room upgrades, and access to special events.

How do travel rewards work?

With a travel credit card, you might earn reward points from both everyday purchases and travel-related expenses. Below are some common questions answered to help you understand what to expect from some of the reward programs and redemption options.

How do I earn points with a travel credit card?

You can earn reward points from purchases made at restaurants, grocery stores and gas stations, just as with regular credit cards. Travel credit cards can offer more lucrative reward points when making travel and dining purchases. The extra reward points you earn from either a general, hotel or airline credit card can accumulate quickly and can be used toward plane tickets, hotel rooms and more.

What about new cardmember bonus points?

Travel credit cards often offer new members bonuses to help you start earning points from purchases to redeem toward future travel. To unlock your bonus points, you'll typically have to spend a certain amount of money, say $4,000, within a specified number of months after signup. Since these bonus points can be substantial, you may be able to redeem the bonus points toward an airline ticket or free night at a hotel within just a few months, without changing your shopping habits.

Are there any travel credit card perks?

Travel credit cards can also offer a wide variety of complimentary perks that aim to enrich your travel experiences no matter your lifestyle or travel preferences. Travel perks may include:

  • Complimentary drinks, snacks and meals
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Free checked bags
  • Hotel room upgrades
  • Reimbursement for canceled flights
  • Lost baggage insurance
  • Invitations to premium airport lounges
  • Upgrades to first class

Do travel rewards cards have annual fees?

Some travel cards have annual fees. However, when you're considering those fees, you might also want to factor in all of the benefits that a card has to offer. These extras, such as free checked bags, priority boarding, and reimbursements on in-flight purchases, can add up to significant savings.

How to pick the best travel rewards card for you

When it comes to finding the credit card that works best for you, it's key to think about the rewards, perks, and benefits that make sense to your lifestyle and spending habits. General travel cards offer great flexibility when it comes to earning and redeeming points and you can leverage your rewards through a variety of airline and hotel chains. Airline and hotel credit cards offer loyalty programs through which your points can carry great value—plus you'll have the chance to enjoy discounts and experiences reserved exclusively for loyalty members. Whichever travel card you decide to go with, enjoy the great savings, convenience and comfort that comes with it.

How much are Ultimate Rewards points worth?

TPG values Ultimate Rewards points at 2 cents each, which is what you should aim for when redeeming them. The actual value you get from these points depends on how you redeem them.

If you redeem your points for cash back or statement credits, each point is typically worth 1 cent. However, if you use your points to book travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal or transfer them to a travel partner, you can often get a higher value per point.

You can use your Chase points for virtually any kind of travel booking: Flights, hotels, cruises, tours and rental cars. If you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred , your points are worth 1.25 cents each, while Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders get a higher valuation of 1.5 cents per point. This is an excellent redemption option for folks who don't want to deal with complicated award program rules. It's straightforward and convenient.

If you want to truly maximize your Ultimate Rewards points, the best option is often to transfer them to one of 14 airline or hotel partners. From there, you can use them for premium travel bookings like first-class flights and luxury hotels. It's a good idea to compare your options to determine the best value for your points.

Best ways to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points

When it comes to redeeming Ultimate Rewards points, you have three basic options: Cash back, Ultimate Rewards travel portal bookings and transfers to travel partners. The "best" option comes down to your travel needs. Points are here to save you money and you should use them when it suits you. That being said, you should aim for the highest value whenever possible. Here's a look at all of your options:

Transfer to travel partners

Transferring Ultimate Rewards to travel partners is, in our opinion, the best way to redeem your hard-earned points. Using Chase transfer partners is certainly your best shot at getting maximum value. You can transfer Ultimate Rewards points to 11 airline programs:

Aer Lingus AerClub

  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue

British Airways Executive Club

  • Emirates Skywards

Iberia Plus

Jetblue trueblue, singapore airlines krisflyer.

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards

United MileagePlus

Virgin atlantic flying club.

Chase also partners with three hotel programs:

  • IHG Rewards Club

Marriott Bonvoy

World of hyatt.

All transfer ratios are 1:1 (though there are occasional transfer bonuses ), and you must transfer points in 1,000-point increments.

If you want to learn some tips about redeeming points for the most value possible, you can check out our guide on Chase Ultimate Rewards sweet spots . We'll break down some of these options below.

Book travel via Chase portal

You can book travel through the Chase Travel Portal and redeem points for your plane tickets, hotel stays, rental cars or experiences at a fixed cash value per point.

As a holder of the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card , each point is worth 1.25 cents. If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve , your points are worth 1.5 cents each toward travel redemptions in the portal. If you have a Chase Freedom Flex , Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card , Ink Business Cash Credit Card or Chase Freedom Unlimited , all points are worth one cent each.

To give you an example of how this works with an actual travel booking, here's a one-night stay at The Ramsey Hotel in Pigeon Forge, TN. The paid rate comes to $269 with taxes and fees. Those with a Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited, Ink Business Unlimited or Ink Business Cash card would need 26,900 points for this booking. Sapphire Preferred cardholders would need 21,520 points while Sapphire Reserve cardholders would redeem just 17,915 points.

chase travel rewards

If you have multiple cards that earn Ultimate Rewards points, you can combine your points into the account that gets the highest value for Ultimate Rewards bookings. For example, all of your points earned with the Chase Freedom Flex can be moved to your Sapphire Reserve account, thus increasing their value from 1 to 1.5 cents apiece.

It's probably worth getting into the habit of combining your points every month or so, just in case Chase decides to change this policy in the future. This is especially important given that Chase has already made it more challenging to combine points with a household member.

Book inexpensive flights with points

If you can find inexpensive airfare in the Ultimate Rewards travel portal, it can make sense to use your points for these flights to save cash. In the eyes of the airline, tickets booked this way are essentially the same as a paid fare. This means you'll earn elite and redeemable miles. Be careful to avoid basic economy tickets , unless you are okay with the restrictions they entail.

In the below case, spending 2,973 Ultimate Rewards points from a Sapphire Reserve account (1.5 cents each) to fly from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) isn't too shabby.

chase travel rewards

You might also consider the travel portal option if you only have a handful of Ultimate Rewards points left, since Chase lets you redeem points to cover even just a portion of the trip cost. You then pay the remaining balance with cash.

Finally, this is a decent option for car rentals, non-chain lodging or when cash rates make spending points through transfer partners a bad value. The hotel options presented are quite varied, though be aware that if you book a hotel that participates in a major loyalty program through Chase Travel, you likely won't earn hotel points, nor will you be able to take advantage of any elite perks.

Cash back or gift cards

Theoretically, you can redeem points for a statement credit bank deposit at a flat rate of 1 cent each.

However, with Chase Pay Yourself Back , you can redeem points for cash back at a rate of 1.25-1.5 cents each, depending on the card you have. This redemption rate is valid on statement credits toward rotating purchase categories, such as dining.

You can also redeem points for gift cards at a rate of 1 cent per point. But you can do better with the program's transfer partners and Chase travel portal bookings, assuming you like to travel. However, we know that needs can change, so these non-travel redemptions remain fall-back options when needed.

Top Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partners

We've mentioned that transferring your Chase points to a travel partner is often your best bet if you want to get the most value out of your points, but now we're going to show you why that's true in many situations.

Here are some of the best ways to redeem Ultimate Rewards with airline and hotel transfer partners:

United doesn't publish award charts anymore, which can be good or bad news, depending on your situation. Thankfully, awards on partners still follow unpublished award charts with set redemption levels, and United does not pass along fuel surcharges .

You can book domestic one-way United awards starting at 5,000 miles each way, business-class awards to Europe start at 60,000 – 70,000 miles each way and award flights to Australia and New Zealand in business class for 80,000 – 90,000 miles each way.

If you are booking a trip that transits different regions (like North America to Europe), you can also build in a free flight segment (known as the Excursionist Perk ). In a sample booking, we found a round-trip economy itinerary from Newark (EWR) to London (LHR) at 60,000 miles plus taxes.

chase travel rewards

Adding in a flight from London to Brussels and spending another week in Belgium costs the same number of miles (with fewer taxes) thanks to the Excursionist Perk .

Flexibility, the number of partners United has and the ease of redeeming MileagePlus miles makes United MileagePlus a popular choice among savvy Chase cardholders.

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards

TPG values Southwest Rapid Rewards points at 1.5 cents each, which is less than the 2 cents per-point value of Ultimate Rewards. So transferring to Southwest isn't a great way to use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points. You can use your Chase points to book a "paid" Southwest flight by calling Chase Travel and booking over the phone, as the flights are not listed on the Chase Travel site.

However, there are a couple of scenarios where transferring points to a friendly carrier with no change or baggage fees makes sense. First, for inexpensive fares of $100 or less, Rapid Reward points can be worth as much as 1.7 cents per point, which beats the value you get when booking through the portal. Second, if you have a Southwest Airlines Companion Pass and are really getting two flights for the price of one award, then your points become worth as much as 3.4 cents per point for inexpensive fares.

Remember too that Southwest flights booked with Rapid Rewards points include free changes and cancellations , which gives you a ton of flexibility if the award rate drops after booking.

Singapore Airlines has a few things going for it as a potential airline transfer destination for your Ultimate Rewards. First, Singapore is one of the best airlines in the sky, with tremendous service and luxurious onboard products and experiences. And the carrier's own premium-class products are typically only available through the KrisFlyer program , not with its Star Alliance partners.

Second, there is fantastic value in Singapore's KrisFlyer program, with reasonable award charts , low fuel surcharges, routing rules that allow stopovers and the ability to combine multiple partners in one award.

Finally, the online award booking tool is intuitive and easy to use — though be aware that transfers typically are not instantaneous.

Here are some of our favorite KrisFlyer redemptions when using Chase Ultimate Rewards.

19,500 miles each way from the U.S. to Hawaii in economy

61,000 miles round-trip from the U.S. to Europe in economy on Star Alliance partners

93,500 miles Sydney to Singapore one-way in the A380 First Suites

Saver Suites Class awards between Syndey and Singapore used to cost just 85,000 miles each way. That cost has since increased to 93,500 miles. Saver availability is hard to come by, but if you really want to try this coveted product, you can book an Advantage award for 155,000 miles each way.

107,000 miles Los Angeles to Singapore one-way in business for 17 hours on the A350

Pre-devaluation, a Saver award between Los Angeles and Singapore priced out at just 95,000 miles each way. The award has since increased to 107,000 miles but can be worth it for a whopping 17-hour flight.

Spain's national carrier remains a mystery to many Chase cardholders, despite the significant value Iberia Plus can offer U.S.-based flyers. The carrier offers cheap economy and transatlantic flights on its own metal and routinely has promotions, making Iberia Plus practically irresistible for a quick hop across the Atlantic.

Without promos, transatlantic business class is priced based on a distanced-based award formula. One-way flights from Miami to Madrid on off-peak dates start at just 21,250 Avios in economy and 42,500 Avios in business class, for instance. There can be less than $100 in surcharges, depending on the class of service you book:

chase travel rewards

Prices get even more attractive, however, for shorter routes (based on distance in miles). For example, off-peak flights from Boston to Madrid require only 17,000 Avios in economy and 34,000 Avios in business each way:

chase travel rewards

There are multiple ways to use Virgin Atlantic's loyalty program to unlock value . Thanks to its own distance-based formula, you can redeem miles to fly Delta domestic itineraries here in the U.S. starting at 7,500 miles per segment, potentially saving you thousands of miles compared to what Delta is asking for the same flight (though it's worth noting that these rewards aren't as valuable as they used to be).

Delta One flights to Europe (excluding the U.K.) are a flat 50,000 miles for nonstop itineraries — though availability tends to be very scant. Instead, consider booking Air France flights in business class. On off-peak dates, flights from the U.S. to most of Europe are just 48,500 points.

chase travel rewards

Other partners, like ANA, have award charts so attractive they almost seem like a mistake. You can use 145,000 Flying Club miles to fly ANA first class round-trip from the West Coast to Japan and 170,000 miles round-trip from the central and eastern U.S. to Japan. Here is Flying Club's award chart for ANA-operated flights:

Virgin Atlantic also offers attractive fares on flights between the U.S. and UK, though taxes on the return flight are quite high. A one-way economy class flight from the East Coast is just 10,000 miles.

Overall, Flying Club presents a lot of different options to yield significant value from your Ultimate Rewards — even after the Delta devaluation from 2021.

If you need a short-haul, nonstop flight on a Oneworld partner, British Airways Avios can reward you with tremendous savings . Short-haul flights outside of North America that are less than 650 miles in length will cost you only 4,500 Avios. This is great for exploring Europe on partner Iberia, for instance.

In North America, short-haul flights start at 9,000 Avios for American Airlines-operated itineraries and can give you significant mileage savings over booking the same flight through American AAdvantage. Atlanta to Dallas costs only 9,000 Avios on a day when American may charge between 12,500 and 20,000 miles in its new dynamic pricing model.

chase travel rewards

BA also lowered the cost of Qatar Airways awards when the Doha-based carrier adopted Avios as its own loyalty currency last year, giving yet another great option for transferring your Chase points for a valuable award ticket.

That said, there are itineraries you don't want to book with Avios, like long-haul British Airways flights or partner-operated flights that incur significant fuel surcharges. Stick to short hops on partner airlines or fifth-freedom routes in the Caribbean (such as Antigua to St. Kitts) and you'll get great use of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points with British Airways.

One of the best ways to use Ultimate Rewards points is to transfer them to World of Hyatt for low or high-category properties. Generally speaking, Hyatt points are worth more than Marriott Bonvoy and IHG points, so Hyatt is often your best hotel transfer partner within Chase Ultimate Rewards.

World of Hyatt also offers an extremely reasonable award chart for free nights, with award nights ranging from 3,500 – 45,000 points. Meanwhile, the World of Hyatt elite status perks are considered the best of any hotel loyalty program.

Related: What is World of Hyatt elite status worth?

chase travel rewards

If you're looking at standard award nights, the program has value across the spectrum of properties. Category 1-5 properties, in particular, can offer some fantastic awards.

Examples include the Grand Hyatt Kauai (25,000 – 35,000 points per night), Hyatt Grand Cypress Orlando (12,000 – 18,000 points), Grand Hyatt Washington D.C. (12,000 – 18,000 points), Hyatt Regency Aruba (25,000 – 35,000 points) and Park Hyatt Mendoza (9,000-15,000 points).

Several Category 1 properties sell for over $100 a night (excluding taxes), so redeeming just 3,500 points for these on off-peak dates is usually a good decision. An example is the Hyatt Regency Downtown Tulsa, which is bookable for just 3,500 – 6,500 Hyatt points per night.

Even the higher tiers of the program have substantial value. For example, redeeming 35,000 – 45,000 points per night at the ski-out Park Hyatt Beaver Creek or 25,000 – 35,000 points per night at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts or Park Hyatt Maldives can make sense, since rooms at these luxury properties routinely sell for over $1,000 a night.

The last several years have seen massive growth in Hyatt's global footprint, thanks to the following new partnerships and integrations:

  • Small Luxury Hotels of the World
  • The addition of the Thompson, Alila and JdV by Hyatt brands.
  • The new all-inclusive brands , mainly in the Caribbean but now in Europe as well.

And the program isn't done yet, as it just announced plans to acquire another 1,500 luxury properties under the Mr. and Mrs. Smith brand — with the deal expected to close in June 2023.

Related: Getting elite-like perks at Small Luxury Hotels of the World

If you want to use your Chase Ultimate Rewards points and protect your cash, you can book all-inclusive resorts with Hyatt points in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. These resorts start at 12,000 points per night for double occupancy. Using points in this manner gets you a room and food, beverages, and some on-site entertainment (including kids clubs at the family-friendly resorts).

Here's TPG's guide to making the most of your Hyatt awards .

Less desirable Ultimate Rewards partners

There are no "bad" redemptions if your points allow you to go where you want to go while keeping your cash safely tucked in your wallet. However, some ways of using Chase points aren't as mathematically rewarding as others.

The following Chase transfer partners would require a unique circumstance for us to transfer Ultimate Rewards, such as needing to top off an existing account balance or a one-off example of where the program provides value. There are typically better ways to get points in these programs instead of transferring Ultimate Rewards.

Here is a quick synopsis of each:

Air France-KLM Flying Blue

The current version of the program has become too illogical to ever plan on using it consistently.

You can certainly get lucky and find a good redemption. For example, TPG Editor Nick Ewen snagged three one-way, business-class awards from Miami (MIA) to Venice (VCE) for 53,000 miles and ~$235 in taxes and fees back in 2019. However, it's generally just too variable.

If you did need Flying Blue miles — perhaps to take advantage of the program's monthly, discounted Promo Rewards or discounted awards for children — you should probably transfer American Express points . Make sure to avoid falling victim to phantom award space. The Flying Blue website often shows award space that isn't actually available. To avoid this, call and confirm with a phone agent before transferring points.

Related: Transferring Ultimate Rewards points to Flying Blue

There's another version of an Avios program here, but nothing really enticing that's worthy of an Ultimate Rewards transfer.

TrueBlue points are redeemed for JetBlue flights at a relatively fixed rate of 1.3 to 1.4 cents per point. With that redemption rate, there are just too many other valuable destinations for your Ultimate Rewards points. So unless you are topping off an award, this might not be your best transfer option.

You can also book JetBlue flights through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal and get a guaranteed 1.5 cents per point if you have the Sapphire Reserve in your wallet.

IHG One Rewards

Top-tier properties in the IHG portfolio typically require 100,000 points per night, but we've seen examples of even higher pricing . It simply costs too much to book award nights in this program using Ultimate Rewards points. We generally believe that any other transfer partner is a better destination for your Ultimate Rewards points than IHG, especially since IHG sometimes sells points for just 0.5 cents each.

Note that IHG did just launch some notable updates to its program , but none of these move the needle when it comes to transferring your Chase points.

Related: IHG's dynamic pricing goes wild, spiking award rates for some hotels

On a case-by-case basis, it could make sense to transfer Ultimate Rewards to Marriott to redeem for an award night. However, these awards can be quite pricey, and with the launch of dynamic pricing , it can be even harder to find value.

With many different Marriott cobranded cards , it's too easy to earn the Marriott points you need without transferring them from Chase Ultimate Rewards.

There are many ways to earn Chase points at rates of anywhere from 1 – 10 points per dollar at a time depending on the specific Chase credit card you carry.

However, if you have an Ultimate Reward-earning card, you can convert your Chase cash-back rewards to full Ultimate Rewards points. For this reason, it can make sense to have more than one Chase card in the family to maximize your earning and redeeming potential. Is it worth it to use Chase Ultimate Rewards?

It can definitely be worth it to use Chase Ultimate Rewards for travel, especially when you're able to save money. Generally, the best use of Ultimate Rewards is for travel, including premium cabin flights and luxury hotels. Regardless of how you use your points, it's a good idea to aim for 2 cents in value per point.

How do I redeem my Chase Ultimate Rewards points?

You can redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points by logging into your Chase account and navigating to the Ultimate Rewards portal. Chase also has a landing page where you can log in to Ultimate Rewards directly. From there, you can choose whether to redeem points for statement credits, gift cards, travel or transfer partners.

How do you get the most value from Chase Ultimate Rewards?

You will generally get the most value from Chase Ultimate Rewards by transferring your points to one of 14 transfer partners for luxury travel. With the right partners, this can lead to 2 cents (or more) in value.

Is there a benefit to booking through Chase Ultimate Rewards?

There are many benefits to booking through Chase Ultimate Rewards. If you're paying for travel, you'll earn elevated rewards through most Chase credit cards. If you're making point bookings through Chase Ultimate Rewards, you have the flexibility to stay at hotels that don't participate in a loyalty program. You also can enter your frequent flyer number on flight bookings and earn redeemable and elite-qualifying miles on your flights.

What is the best way to use Chase Ultimate Rewards?

The best way to use Chase Ultimate Rewards is for sweet spot award redemption through transfer partners.

Is it better to redeem points for cash or travel?

It's better to redeem Ultimate Rewards points for travel rather than cash. Depending on the type of Chase card you have, you'll typically get a much higher rate of return by redeeming points for travel.

Bottom line

The above strategies are just a sampling of the many redemptions available through the Ultimate Rewards program. If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve , Chase Sapphire Preferred Card or Ink Business Preferred Credit Card , booking through the travel portal at a rate of 1.25 – 1.5 cents per point will be a solid baseline redemption for many travelers. However, to really get maximum value, look to utilize Chase transfer partners to book the flights and hotel rooms that otherwise would be outside of your means.

In any case, the Ultimate Rewards program provides a wide range of options to maximize your points and save you money — you just have to decide which ways to use Chase points are the most worthwhile to you.

After the discounted year, you will continue to be enrolled and charged the then current annual Lyft Pink All Access rate, every year unless canceled. You can cancel auto-renewal anytime on the Lyft mobile application and continue to enjoy the benefits of your Lyft Pink All Access membership through the end of your complimentary or discounted membership term. Cardmembers who do not utilize any services associated with their membership during the last six (6) months of their complimentary membership term, will not be auto-renewed and will not be eligible for the Lyft Pink All Access discounted membership. Lyft Pink All Access will be registered in the name of the primary cardmember or an authorized user, whoever activates the benefit first. PayPal or digital wallets (like Apple Pay and Google Pay), or memberships purchased through third parties are excluded from this offer. Mobile applications, websites, and other information provided by Lyft are not within Chase's control and may or may not be available in Spanish. All Lyft products and services are subject to the Lyft Terms of Service and Lyft Pink Terms & Conditions. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Lyft benefits and services. Your Chase Sapphire Reserve account must be open and not in default, and your Chase Sapphire Reserve card must be included as a payment method within the Lyft App to maintain complimentary two-year membership benefits and purchase the discounted membership in your third year.

Complimentary DashPass: You and your authorized user(s) will receive at least 12 months of complimentary DashPass for use on both the DoorDash and Caviar applications during the same membership period based on the first activation date, when the membership is activated with a Chase Sapphire Reserve card by 12/31/2024. Membership period for all users on this Chase Sapphire account will begin and end based on when the first user activates the membership on DoorDash or Caviar. The same login credentials must be used on DoorDash and Caviar in order for the DashPass benefit to be used on both applications. To receive the membership benefits, the primary cardmember and authorized user(s) must first add their Chase Sapphire card as a default payment method on DoorDash or Caviar, and then click the activation button. Once enrolled in DashPass, you must use your Chase Sapphire card for payment at checkout for DashPass-eligible orders to receive DashPass benefits. Benefits of DashPass include no delivery fee on orders above the minimum subtotal (as stated in the DoorDash and Caviar apps and sites) from DashPass eligible merchants (amounts subject to change). However, other fees (including service fee), taxes, and gratuity on orders may still apply. Current value of the DashPass membership is as of 04/01/2022. DashPass orders are subject to delivery driver and geographic availability. Membership must be activated with a United States address. Payment through third-party payment accounts, or online or mobile digital wallets (like Apple Pay and Google Pay), or memberships purchased through third parties are excluded from this offer. Mobile applications, websites and other information provided by DoorDash or Caviar are not within Chase's control and may or may not be available in Spanish. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, DoorDash or Caviar benefits and services. If you product change to another Chase credit card eligible for a DashPass membership during the promotional period, your DashPass benefits may change. You may experience a delay in updating your applicable DashPass benefits on DoorDash or Caviar; please note, once you product trade, the benefits from your previous credit card are no longer available for your use. You can only access the benefits available with your current credit card. Your Chase Sapphire account must be open and not in default to maintain membership benefits. See full DoorDash terms and conditions at: https://help.doordash.com/consumers/s/article/offer-terms-conditions?language=en_US .

Earn $5 monthly DoorDash/Caviar Credits through 12/31/2024: Get $5 in DoorDash/Caviar credits each calendar month while enrolled in DashPass through 12/31/2024. When applied to an order, the $5 credit will apply only to the subtotal of your DoorDash or Caviar order at checkout. The credit does not apply to fees, taxes, or tip and gift card purchases are excluded. You or up to 7 authorized users must be enrolled in DashPass and use your Chase Sapphire Reserve or J.P. Morgan Reserve card for payment at checkout to receive the credit. Once you spend the issued credits on one platform (e.g., DoorDash), it will be automatically deducted from your balance on the other (e.g., Caviar). Any monthly credit issued before you create an account on the other platform will only be available on the original platform for that month. Once you have accounts opened on both platforms, any credits issued will be available for onetime use on either DoorDash or Caviar. Your credit balance may be different on each platform, but your credit usage will still be linked from that point on. If a credit is not used within the calendar month, it will be carried over for a maximum of 2 months. Up to $15 in credit can be accrued before a $5 credit expires. DoorDash credits have no cash value and are non-transferable. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, DoorDash benefits and services. Credit card product changes during the promotional period will forfeit this offer. Additional DoorDash promotional terms and conditions available at: https://help.doordash.com/consumers/s/article/offer-terms-conditions?language=en_US . All deliveries subject to availability. Must have or create a valid DoorDash account. Qualifying orders containing alcohol will be charged a $0.01 Delivery Fee. No cash value. Non-transferable. Morgan Reserve cardmembers) when the membership is activated on http://www.instacart.com/chase with an eligible card between 6/15/2022 and 7/31/2024. Membership must be activated with a United States address. Payment through third-party payment accounts, or online or mobile digital wallets (like Apple Pay and Google Pay), or memberships purchased through third parties are excluded from this offer. If you currently have a paid or trial Instacart+ membership, you agree that your existing membership will be paused for the duration of this benefit and resume upon expiration. Your existing membership will automatically renew based on the Instacart+ Terms previously agreed upon unless you cancel. Your membership fees will be billed to any active payment method on file until you cancel. You can cancel your Instacart+ membership prior to the end of your complimentary Instacart+ membership period or at any time thereafter by selecting "Cancel Membership" in your Account Settings. Cancellation goes into effect during the next billing cycle. You may cancel within the first 15 calendar days of your paid Instacart+ membership and receive a refund of the Instacart+ membership fee you paid, but only if you have not placed any orders using your Instacart+ membership. If you change to another Chase credit card during the promotional period, your benefits may change. Mobile applications, websites and other information provided by Instacart are not within Chase's control and may or may not be available in Spanish. Statement Credit on Instacart Purchases: Earn up to $15 per calendar month (for Chase Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve cardmembers) in statement credits on qualifying Instacart purchases from 8/1/2022 through 7/31/2024 when you activate a complimentary Chase Instacart+ membership on Instacart.com/chase with your eligible Chase credit card. You can check the status of your enrollment in the Chase benefit within the Instacart+ section of the Instacart mobile app. You will continue to receive statement credit benefits regardless of whether you choose to renew your Instacart+ membership at the end of your complimentary period. Qualifying Instacart purchases include only those orders purchased by you, or an authorized user, with a Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card through Instacart.com or the Instacart mobile application (gift cards excluded). Statement credit(s) will post to your account within 48 hours of your qualifying Instacart purchase posting to your account and will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles. Statement credits will be issued for the calendar month in which the transaction posts to your account. For example, if you pay for an Instacart order, but Instacart does not post the transaction until after the current calendar month ends, the cost of the Instacart purchase will be allocated towards the next calendar month's maximum, or will not qualify if the promotional period has ended. If you change to another Chase credit card during the promotional period, your benefits may change. Mobile applications, websites and other information provided by Instacart are not within Chase's control and may or may not be available in Spanish. Chase is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Instacart benefits and services. Accounts must be open and not in default at the time the statement credit posts to your account.

That's 9 (Sapphire Reserve or J.P. Morgan Reserve) or 4 (Sapphire Preferred) points on top of the 1 point you already earn on these purchases with your card. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks after qualifying purchases post to your account for points to post to your account. To qualify for this bonus offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. This bonus offer is non-transferable.

50% More Through Chase Ultimate Rewards: When you use points to redeem for cash, each point is worth $.01 (one cent), which means that 100 points equals $1 in redemption value. Each point you redeem for travel booked through Chase Travel is worth $.0150 (one and a half cents), which means that 100 points equals $1.50 in redemption value, and points are worth 50% more than if redeemed for cash. For example, 60,000 points are worth $900 when redeemed for travel purchases, or $600 when redeemed for cash. The cost of travel is based on the rates and fares available through Chase Travel, including the online portal and call center, and may not reflect all rates and fares that are available through other sales channels. If you choose to use points and your Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card to pay for your purchase, each point will be worth $.0150, but your credit card will be charged the full remaining dollar amount.

What are Chase travel credit cards?

Earning chase points, the value of flexible point currencies, maximizing your benefits, chase travel cards, recapped.

Chase travel credit cards are some of the most popular and beginner-friendly cards. Perhaps you’ve heard a friend or family member totaling up all the great rewards they’re redeeming and you want in. Even if you’ve already got a co-branded card, such as those offered by Hyatt and United, Chase’s own travel credit cards are well-worth investing in.

Let’s take a look at the different types of Chase travel cards, why they’re valuable and the different benefits they provide.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Chase has two very distinct categories of travel credit cards. The first is Chase’s own branded cards, like the Chase Sapphire cards or the Chase Freedom cards. These can earn either cash back or points, depending on which card you hold. Chase’s travel cards earn Ultimate Rewards® . These points can be used in many different ways, including:

Gift cards.

Reward travel.

Transfers to other partners.

The second type of travel credit card that Chase offers is the co-branded credit card, which is a partnership between Chase and an airline or hotel. This includes options such as the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card and the United Quest℠ Card .

These cards will earn points in the currency of its respective program. For IHG, you’ll earn IHG points . For United, you’ll earn United MileagePlus miles .

When you sign-up for a new credit card, you’ll usually be able to earn a welcome bonus. This bonus is a lump-sum deposit of points into your account once you’ve met a certain spend threshold.

Two of Chase’s most popular travel cards, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , both come with a welcome bonus in points:

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

Chase Sapphire Reserve® : Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $900 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

You’ll also keep earning Chase points after you receive your sign-up bonus, though the number of Chase points you’ll earn will depend on which card you hold.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® , for example, will earn 10x points on dining and 5x points on airfare purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. You’ll also earn 3x points on all other travel purchases, including dining purchases, though you’ll be on the hook for a hefty $550 annual fee.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , meanwhile, will charge you a $95 annual fee and earns 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards® and 2x points on all other travel.

The more expensive Chase Sapphire Reserve® card allows you to redeem your points for 1.5 cents in value via Chase's travel portal, while the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card will give you a value of 1.25 cents per point.

» Learn more: How to build your ideal Chase Ultimate Rewards® wallet

So why would you pick a Chase card rather than a co-branded credit card, especially if you’re pretty loyal to one chain? Say you really like to stay at Hyatt, so you’re trying to decide between the World of Hyatt Credit Card ( $95 annual fee) and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ( $95 annual fee).

The World of Hyatt Credit Card earns up to 9x Hyatt points at Hyatt and 2x points on dining, transit, flights and gym memberships. It earns 1x points everywhere else.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , meanwhile, earns 5x points on travel booked via Chase's travel portal and 3x points on dining. It also earns 3x points on all other travel — after spending your first $300 on travel purchases annually — and 1x points for all other purchases.

On its face, you can see that World of Hyatt Credit Card will earn you more points than a Chase card, at least when spending at Hyatt. But if you’re into dining out and making normal travel purchases, you’ll outearn the Hyatt card with the Chase card every time.

And using the Chase card won't stop you from getting Hyatt points, either. This is thanks to the status of Chase Ultimate Rewards® as a transferable point currency .

Chase Ultimate Rewards® transfer to 14 different hotel and airline partners, Hyatt included. These points transfer over at a 1:1 ratio so one Chase point becomes 1 Hyatt point.

Even more important than earning Hyatt points is the ability to transfer to other partners. Chase Ultimate Rewards® can be turned into United miles, which you can use to book flights. You can transfer them over to Marriott for a luxurious stay in Europe or even send them to Southwest for cheap flights to Hawaii.

With a whole host of different partners, your Chase Ultimate Rewards® have far more versatility than any single airline or hotel credit card can provide.

Chase’s travel cards do more than just earn and transfer points. Both the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , for example, come with additional benefits simply for being a cardholder.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card features an annual $50 hotel credit, good for hotels booked through Chase's travel portal .

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® provides even more benefits to support its $550 annual fee:

$300 annual travel credit .

Airport lounge access via a Priority Pass Select membership.

Access to the Luxury Hotels & Resorts program.

$100 TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit.

Although other travel cards also come with handy benefits, the $300 credit the Chase Sapphire Reserve® provides effectively knocks a major chunk off the annual fee.

» Learn more: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card vs. Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Is there a best Chase travel credit card? The answer depends on you. If you’re looking for a moderately priced card that’ll provide solid benefits, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card may be a good option for you. If you’re wanting some perks at the airport and don’t mind shelling out more for an annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® may be a better fit.

Whether you’re looking for your first travel card or already have half a dozen under your belt, Chase’s travel credit cards offer excellent earnings and solid perks for any potential traveler.

The information for the following product(s) has been collected independently by Business Insider: Chase Freedom Flex℠, Chase Freedom® Student credit card. The details for these products have not been reviewed or provided by the issuer.

  • The Chase Travel℠ portal works just like an online travel agency.
  • You can use points, cash, or a combination of both to book flights, hotels, rental cars, and more.
  • Several Chase cards offer better redemption values or bonus points when you book through the portal.

The Chase Travel Portal℠ is an online booking platform for flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, activities, and vacation rentals, similar to an Online Travel Agency (OTA). If you're a Chase Ultimate Rewards® cardholder, you can use points to book travel through the portal — or pay with your card or a combination of points and cash.

Chase Ultimate Rewards is one of the most flexible and lucrative credit card rewards programs, and its benefits can be even greater depending on the Chase cards you have. With a no-annual-fee card like the Chase Freedom Flex℠ or Chase Freedom Unlimited® , your points are worth 1 cent each toward travel booked through the portal.

But if you have a Chase travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card , you'll get 25% to 50% more value when you redeem your points for travel, plus the ability to transfer your points to Chase airline and hotel partners .

Some Chase cards also offer bonus points for paid bookings you make through the portal. Chase added lucrative new bonus categories to the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, including certain types of travel booked through the portal.

Here's everything you need to know about booking airfare, hotels, and more through the Chase travel portal — and how to make the most of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

What Is the Chase Travel Portal?

The Chase Travel portal works like any other Online Travel Agency (such as Travelocity or Priceline), and the searches you do for hotels, airfare, and more will produce similar results to what you see on that OTA.

You must be a Chase credit card customer to use Chase travel to book with cash or with points. In fact, you'll only access the Chase Travel portal when you log into your account management page with Chase.

Chase travel lets you book travel directly with Chase Ultimate Rewards points, use your credit card to pay, or combine the two. This is one of the main benefits of using Chase travel — you can spend the rewards points you earn directly on the travel you want without having to worry about dealing with specific hotel or airline loyalty programs.

There are a few other key benefits to know:

  • You'll still earn airline miles and work toward elite airline status: You won't earn points or elite night credits when you book a hotel stay with Chase travel because it's considered a third-party booking. However, you can earn airline and elite-qualifying miles on flights you book as long as your frequent flyer number is attached to the reservation.
  • Your points are worth more with certain Chase credit cards: Also be aware that some Chase credit cards give you more than the standard rate of 1 cent per point when you redeem your rewards for travel through Chase. We'll go into more detail on the cards that offer this perk below.
  • The Chase Travel portal is easy to use: If you don't want to deal with a bunch of hotel and airline award charts, booking through Chase travel can help keep your rewards game simple. You'll always be able to use your points for any booking you want without having to worry about blackout dates or capacity controls you would normally encounter with loyalty programs.

To be eligible to use the Chase Travel portal, you'll need a Chase credit card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points .

No-annual-fee Chase cards open to new applicants (points are worth 1 cent each through the Chase Travel portal):

  • Chase Freedom Unlimited® (read our Chase Freedom Unlimited review )
  • Chase Freedom Flex℠ (read our Chase Freedom Flex review )
  • Chase Freedom® Student credit card (read our Chase Freedom Student review )
  • Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card (read our Chase Ink Business Unlimited review )

Chase travel rewards cards open to new applicants (points are worth more with Chase travel, plus these cards allow you to transfer points to airline and hotel partners):

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® (read our Chase Sapphire Reserve review )
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (read our Chase Sapphire Preferred review )
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (read our Chase Ink Business Preferred review )

If you have more than one Chase card, you can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points between accounts. It makes the most sense to pool your points in the account that gives you the best redemption value — for example, if you pair the Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Chase Sapphire Reserve®, moving all of your Chase Ultimate Rewards to your Sapphire Reserve account will increase the value of your points when you redeem through the Chase Travel portal.

To pool your points onto one card, log into your Chase online account, navigate to the "Redeem" section for your Chase Ultimate Rewards card, then select the option to combine points in the "Earn/Use" tab:

From there, you can move your Chase points between accounts in any increments you want.

Points Value in the Chase Travel Portal

Some Chase credit cards give you a bonus when you redeem points through the Chase Travel portal. Here's a summary of how much your points are worth with each Chase card:

It's important to note that Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth, on average, 1.8 cents apiece based on Personal Finance Insider's points and miles valuations . That's because it's possible to get outsized value when you transfer points to partners for award travel.

How to Use the Chase Travel Portal

Using the Chase Travel portal is a breeze, but it all starts with logging into your online account management page. From there, you'll click on the right side of your screen where it shows your Chase Ultimate Rewards account balance.

Once you click on the account balance, you'll have the option to select the card you want to access. And remember, this step can be important because some cards give you more value from your points when you redeem them for travel.

How to book a flight through Chase travel

Once you are logged into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account, you'll see different travel options to search for at the top of the page.

To search for a flight, make sure the prompt is on "Flights" and begin searching for the flight you want. Enter your departure airport, destination, travel dates, and the number of passengers.

Once your flight options pop up on the screen, you can filter your results by the number of stops, the airlines you want to fly, and arrival times.

Note that each of your flight options will include a payment amount in points as well as a cash price.

You can also click on "Details and baggage fees" in order to find out the cost of carry-on luggage or checked baggage, as well as whether your flight charges any change fees.

When you click to "Select" a flight option, you'll get a rundown of what is and isn't included in the fare you selected. You may also get a note that you can upgrade before you check out.

Once you settle on a flight you want, you'll be taken to the "Trip Details" page that shows the final cost of your flight in points or in cash, as well as a summary of the added costs you may be charged for baggage or change fees.

After you agree to the terms, you'll be taken to a final payment page where you can decide how you want to pay. You have the option to cover your flight entirely in points if you want, but you can also choose to pay with your Chase credit card or with a combination of points and your credit card.

During the booking process, make sure to add your frequent flyer number to your reservation. That way, you can earn miles on your booking and your flight will count toward elite status requirements. You'll also want to add your Known Traveler Number or Redress number if either applies to you.

If you forget to do it during your booking, however, you can add your frequent flyer information to your flight later on using the airline's website.

How to book a hotel through Chase travel

Booking a hotel through Chase is similarly easy, and you'll find a lot of different types of lodging options available. For example, you'll find properties from major hotel brands, but you'll also find rental condo options and boutique hotels.

To search for a hotel,  enter the destination, dates, and the number of people you want to have in your room. Once you're presented with your options, you can filter hotels based on the hotel name you're looking for, the area or neighborhood, price point, guest rating, property type, and more.

Once again, you'll see a price listed in points as well as a cash price per night.

These prices do not include taxes and fees, however, so your price in points or cash will be higher by the time you get to the final booking page. Also be aware that the price listed is the lowest you can get for the property, but that better or upgraded rooms and suites will cost more in points.

The major downside to booking a hotel through the Chase portal is that you won't earn hotel points or elite night credits for your stay, because it's considered a third-party booking. There's also a risk that the property won't recognize your hotel elite status or give you the perks you'd normally be entitled to, like late checkout or free breakfast . This shouldn't be an issue if you're booking an independent or boutique hotel, but if you're looking for hotel points or status, it's something to be aware of.

You'll have the option to select a hotel you want as well as a room type at the property you're considering. You can also pay with your booking with points, your Chase credit card, or a combination of the two.

How to book a rental car through Chase travel

You can also book a rental car through Chase travel using the same set of steps. Once you log into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account, click on "Cars" and then select the destination and dates.

Once you are presented with your search results, you can select the types of cars you prefer, like an economy car or an SUV. You can also filter results based on a price range, the number of passengers you have, the rental car company, and the type of transmission you prefer (manual or automatic), as well as the total area you want to search in.

Note that, once again, taxes and fees are not included on the initial search page. Instead, they are added to your total cost when you select a rental car. You can also pay for a rental car through Chase with points, your credit card, or a combination of the two.

How to book activities with the Chase Travel portal

Chase also lets you book a variety of activities through the portal, which they refer to as "Things to Do." Chase activities can include excursions like snorkeling or scuba diving, as well as tours of museums and historic sites. But you can also book more practical options through their activities tab, including airport pickups and other types of transportation.

To search for activities, enter the destination and dates for your trip. You'll be shown a price in points and in cash that does include taxes and fees. You can also filter options based on the type of activity, your interests, and more. Once again, you have the option to pay for activities with your points, your credit card, or a combination of the two.

How to book a cruise through Chase travel

If you're a cruise enthusiast, you should know you can also book cruises through Chase travel. When you select "Cruises" at the top of the Chase Ultimate Rewards search page, you'll be presented with a list of featured cruises and cruise specials.

You can also search for cruises based on the destination or the name of the cruise line. Note, however, that only cash prices are listed for each cruise on the portal, and that you'll have to call Chase to make a booking.

Either way, you can absolutely use your Chase points to pay for all or part of your cruise. Just have your credit card number handy and call their customer service line at 855-234-2542.

How to book a vacation rental through Chase

Chase also offers a selection of vacation rentals, which can include vacation condos, luxury villas, and more. To search, click on "Vacation Rentals" at the top of the main page, then enter your destination, dates, and the number of people in your party.

Once you start your search, you'll have the option to filter results based on the local neighborhood you want, star ratings, price range, guest rating, property type, and more. Like hotels through Chase, the price you are shown excludes taxes and fees, but they will be added to your total once you make a selection.

Also be aware that the price shown in your search results is for the lowest-tier option for each property, and that a larger rental or upgraded rental may cost more in points.

When you book vacation rentals through Chase, you can pay with points, your Chase card, or a combination of the two.

Use the Chase Travel portal to book Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection properties

If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, you can book properties within the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection. This list of more than 1,000 properties can be reserved ahead of time, and you'll get extra benefits with each stay such as:

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • A special benefit worth up to $100
  • Complimentary internet access
  • Room upgrades when available
  • Early check-in and late checkout

One detail to note with this program is the fact that you cannot pay with points. Instead, your online booking will reserve your room, and you'll be charged for the stay when you check out from the hotel.

Should you transfer Chase points instead?

While you can book travel through the Chase Travel portal directly, many people prefer to transfer points to Chase airline and hotel partners instead. Doing so could let you get more value for each point you redeem , but you'll have to run the numbers to find out for sure.

Here's a good example of how transferring points to a Chase airline or hotel partner can be a better deal, as well as the math you'll need to do to figure this out on your own. Take this one-way flight on Air France from Chicago to Paris, for example, and assume you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, so you're getting 50% more value when you redeem points through the Chase Travel portal.

If you were to book this flight through Chase Travel, you would owe 39,607 points with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, compared with the cash price of $594.10.

However, you could book an award ticket on the exact same flight through Flying Blue (Air France's loyalty program) directly if you transferred your Chase points there first. In this case, the identical flight would set you back 22,000 miles plus $109.44. This means you would transfer 22,000 miles from Chase to your Flying Blue account, and pay the taxes and fees in cash, or by redeeming points for a statement credit to your account.

When you compare, you'll find that booking with miles directly is a better deal. After you subtract the taxes and fees from the cost of booking through Flying Blue, you wind up with a value of around 2.2 cents per mile.

With the Chase Travel portal, on the other hand, you're forking over 39,607 points for the same flight, and you're getting a value of 1.5 cents for each point if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

Accessing Chase Travel is simple. If you're a Chase credit cardholder with Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you can log in to your Chase online account. Once logged in, navigate to the 'Travel" or "Rewards" section, where you'll find the Chase Travel portal. From there, you can search and book flights, hotels, and other travel services using your earned points or card benefits. It's a convenient way to plan and manage your travel adventures.

Chase Travel refers to the travel booking and rewards platform offered by Chase Bank. It's part of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program, allowing cardholders to use their earned points to book flights, hotels, car rentals, and other travel-related expenses. Chase Travel provides a convenient way to plan and book your trips while taking advantage of the rewards and benefits associated with Chase credit cards.

To earn 5% on Chase Travel, consider using a Chase credit card that offers bonus rewards on travel purchases. Cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve often offer 5 points per dollar spent on travel booked through the Chase Travel portal. Additionally, taking advantage of limited-time promotions and special offers can also help you maximize your rewards when booking travel with Chase.

Bottom Line

Keep in mind that, no matter which Chase credit card you have, there are other ways you can use your rewards points. You can redeem Chase points for statement credits or cash back, or cash them in for gift cards or merchandise. And if you have a premier Chase travel credit card, you can transfer your points to Chase airline and hotel partners at a 1:1 ratio.

However, booking travel through Chase can make your life considerably easier — especially if you don't like dealing with complicated hotel and airline programs. You may not get as much value from your points as you would if you booked a premium flight with airline miles, but the Chase Travel portal does offer the flexibility to book the flight you want without any blackout dates or hoops to jump through.

The Chase Travel portal offers yet another way to maximize rewards earned with a Chase credit card. Just make sure to consider all your options and the value you're getting for your points before you pull the trigger.

Better Together: How to combine Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card for maximum travel rewards

chase travel rewards

Fortune Recommends™ has partnered with CardRatings for our coverage of credit card products. Fortune Recommends™ and CardRatings may receive a commission from card issuers.

If credit cards were food, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card cards would definitely be peanut butter and jelly, respectively.

That’s because both cards start out perfectly solid on their own. Even if you never knew how to combine their powers, you’d be very happy using both on a daily basis. But what exactly is the “PB & J” of Chase rewards? Well, get your favorite white bread ready and let’s find out.

Chase Sapphire Preferred – a grab bag of travel perks

In a similar vein, here’s a quick breakdown of Chase’s homemade grape jam, the ever-popular Sapphire Preferred card:

  • 2x points on travel purchases , plus 3x points on dining, 3x points on select streaming services and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠ and 1x points on other purchases.
  • 25% travel redemption bonus when you redeem your Chase Ultimate Rewards points through Chase Travel (e.g. redeem 10,000 points, get $125 in value).
  • 60,000-point welcome bonus after spending $4,000 within three months.
  • $50 annual statement credit good towards a hotel booked through Chase Travel.
  • $95 annual fee

To learn more, check out our full review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred .

Circling back to our “recipe,” notice how Chase is quick to point out that your 60,000-point welcome bonus is worth $750 in travel redemption–all thanks to that handy 25% redemption bonus. And if you think about it, that means the points you earn with the card are worth 1.25X towards travel, too.

So in reality, as long as you’re redeeming points through Chase Travel, your rewards chart really looks like this:

  • 5X > 6.25X on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 3X > 3.75X on dining/online groceries/streaming
  • 2X > 2.5X on general travel
  • 1X > 1.25X on everything else

Those are some mighty impressive earnings rates, lending even more value to the CSP as a travel companion.

But here’s the crazy thing: that 25% bonus multiplier applies to every Chase Ultimate Rewards point you earn, regardless of which card you earn it with .

Here’s how it all works.

Here’s how your Chase Sapphire Preferred account lets you earn 6.25X with your Freedom Flex card

In our Chase Ultimate Rewards guide we outline all of the dozen-ish ways you can redeem your hard-earned Chase points. From trips to back massages to cash back, there’s hardly a bad option.

But perhaps the most underrated option is the Combine points feature.

chase travel rewards

Combine points allows you to move Chase Ultimate Rewards points from one Chase card to another–meaning you can earn points with one card–and spend them with another. Another that has, say a 25% points multiplier on points redeemed for travel…

chase travel rewards

As you can see, the option only applies to Chase rewards cards that generate Chase Ultimate Rewards points. So the Prime Visa and the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card cards, for example, won’t appear here–but your Freedom and Sapphire cards will.

Unlike a bank transfer, combining Chase Ultimate Rewards points is free and instantaneous. Plus, you can always move the points back if you wish (although I’ve never found a reason to move points from a Sapphire card back to a Freedom card).

chase travel rewards

Then, as soon as you’ve combined all of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points into your Sapphire account, you can go spend them at Chase Travel where you’ll get an extra 25% in value:

chase travel rewards

This trick also works with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card where you’ll get 50% extra value (provided you’re cool with the card’s $550 annual fee).

Now, while I heartily recommend this trick to most travelers I meet–especially if they already have both cards–you should know that it still comes with three big caveats.

PB & Js aren’t perfect, and neither is this trick

Though delicious, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches aren’t perfect. They’re high in fat, sugar and carbohydrates, and unlike the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, they don’t travel especially well.

In a similar vein, here are the caveats to the “PB & J of Chase cards”:

  • The Chase Sapphire Preferred card charges a $95 annual fee and requires a 670+ FICO score to apply.
  • With the Chase Freedom Flex, you can only earn 5% cash back on activated bonus category purchases each quarter (up to $1,500 in purchases, then 1%) (generating 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points worth $93.75).
  • Hotel rooms booked using points typically don’t generate any additional rewards or allow you to utilize your status benefits.

But if you’re OK with these caveats, I hope you enjoy this simple recipe for tastier travel rewards.  And for more tips to help you get off the ground–quite literally–check out our Beginner’s guide to travel rewards .

Please note that card details are accurate as of the publish date, but are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the issuer. Please contact the card issuer to verify rates, fees, and benefits before applying.

A Closer Look at the Best Credit Cards for Rideshares

Why we love this card: Though it carries a hefty annual fee of $550, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers so many perks that frequent travelers will find it easy to get at least that much value from the card. Lyft riders especially will benefit from the card’s bonus earnings on Lyft rides (10X points on qualifying Lyft rides through March 31, 2025), not to mention the two free years of Lyft Pink All Access membership.

Who should have this in their wallet: This card is best for Lyft riders and frequent travelers who can get the most value from the card’s steep annual fee.

Other cards to consider: For 5X points on qualifying Lyft rides (through March 31, 2025), numerous travel benefits and a $95 annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Preferred makes a sensible alternative.

Why we love this card: If you live to eat instead of eat to live, then the Capital One Savor Rewards card was made for you. You’ll get a relatively unbeatable 10% cash back on Uber rides to your favorite restaurants (until November 14, 2024), plus 4% cash back on dining when you get there. Eating in instead? You’ll still get 10% cash back if you order delivery or pickup with Uber Eats (through November 14, 2024), and 3% cash back at grocery stores to cook (excluding superstores like Target and Walmart).

Who should have this in their wallet: This card could be a great pick for foodies with excellent credit who use Uber regularly.

Other cards to consider: If you don’t want to pay the $95 annual fee and don’t mind earning 3% instead of 4% back on dining, the SavorOne is an easy swap. If your rideshare service of choice is Lyft, then the Chase Sapphire Preferred offers perks you can use for the same $95 annual fee.

Why we love this card: As far as rewards go, it’s tough to beat the 10% cash back on Uber purchases that you get with the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card (until November 14, 2024). We love that the 10% extends to Uber Eats purchases too—combined with the complimentary Uber One membership when you charge your monthly membership fee to your card (through November 14, 2024), you can save a lot (whether it’s you or your food that’s getting a ride). And there’s no annual fee with this card, either.

Who should have this in their wallet: The SavorOne could be a great pick for you if you’re a regular Uber rider or you order on Uber Eats frequently. You’ll also rake in cash back if you frequently dine out and spend money on entertainment.

Other cards to consider: If you love the card and want the Uber benefits but don’t have excellent credit, check out the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards for Good Credit or the Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card , which is geared towards applicants with fair to good credit. You’ll miss out on an introductory APR offer with these cards, though.

Best for Uber Cash: The Platinum Card® from American Express

Why we love this card: The hulking annual fee of the Platinum Card from American Express starts to look much more reasonable as you add up the available perks, benefits and credits, including up to $200 in Uber Cash each year.

Who should have this in their wallet: Jetsetters with a taste for the finer things will appreciate the global airport lounge access, Platinum travel service, elite hotel and car rental status and many other luxury travel perks extended to Platinum card members.

Other cards to consider: The $695 annual fee may still be too steep for some Uber riders, making a card like the American Express Gold Card ($250 annual fee) a better pick.

Why we love this card: Add the American Express Gold Card to your Uber wallet to receive $10 monthly in Uber Cash; add it to your regular wallet to earn 4X points at restaurants worldwide (plus on takeout and delivery in the U.S.) and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X points).

Who should have this in their wallet: The Amex Gold Card will be a good fit for Uber riders who spend a lot on food, whether at U.S. supermarkets or restaurants worldwide.

Other cards to consider: If you’re skittish about the $250 annual fee, consider a card that offers similar food perks but with a $95 annual fee: the Savor Cash Rewards card, which lets you earn 4% cash back on dining and 3% back at grocery stores (excluding Target and Walmart), plus 10% cash back on Uber and Uber Eats through November 14, 2024.

Why we love this card: For just $95 annually, we think the Sapphire Preferred offers a number of useful benefits for Lyft riders beyond the 5X points they can earn on qualifying rides through March 31, 2025. You can protect your purchases for 120 days against theft or damage with purchase protection, plus extended warranty protection extends the time period of eligible warranties an additional year. You’ll also get travel protection and benefits that come in handy even if you don’t travel often, such as 2X points on other travel purchases, an up to $50 annual hotel credit on hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel and trip cancellation/interruption insurance.

Who should have this in their wallet: Lyft riders who travel will get the most value from the Chase Sapphire Preferred with the points boost, but Uber riders can also enjoy 2X points on their rides, too, as they’ll count as travel.

Other cards to consider: For a higher annual fee, you could choose the Chase Sapphire Reserve instead to receive complimentary Lyft Pink All Access membership (valued at $199 per year) and $300 in annual travel credit, which more than covers the cost difference. If you’d prefer no annual fee instead, you’ll still earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025 if you go with the Chase Freedom Unlimited.

Why we love this card: This card offers a solid, unlimited minimum of 1.5% cash back on purchases, but sweetens the deal for Lyft riders with 5% total cash back on qualifying Lyft rides through March 31, 2025, plus you’ll get 3% cash back on dining at restaurants (including takeout and eligible delivery service) and drugstore purchases. New cardholders can also take advantage of 15 months of 0% intro APR from account opening on purchases and balance transfers (balance transfer fee applies), then 20.49% – 29.24% variable APR after that.

Who should have this in their wallet: Lyft riders who don’t want to pay an annual fee and who value a decent intro APR for balance transfers will appreciate this card. It also makes a nice companion card for someone who holds the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve, because you may be able to transfer points to your Sapphire account for boosted redemptions.

Other cards to consider: Other Chase no-annual-fee cards that earn 5% total cash back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025 include the Chase Freedom Flex℠ and the Chase Freedom Rise℠ Credit Card. The Flex offers 5% cash back in bonus categories you activate, while the Rise offers 1.5% cash back on every purchase.

Why we love this card: As long as you have an iPhone and are comfortable using Apple Pay, the rewards on the Apple Card will earn you 3% Daily Cash on Uber rides plus 2% Daily Cash on other purchases, which are solid rates. We also like the card’s financial tools for tracking spending and no annual fee.

Who should have this in their wallet: This one’s for Apple enthusiasts; you’ll need an iPhone to get the boosted rewards and other benefits, plus that’s how you’ll activate the titanium physical card. You’ll also need to make sure you can use Apple Pay to get the most from this card.

Other cards to consider: If you have an Android or don’t use Apple Pay, the Wells Fargo Active Cash is an alternative that lets you earn 2% cash back on rideshares and other purchases without the iOS restrictions.

Why we love this card: You can get 3% cash back on rideshares regardless of which company you’re loyal to. The Blue Cash Preferred also offers an outstanding 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%), plus 6% on select U.S. streaming services, too (you can redeem cash back as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout). Though there’s a $95 annual fee, you can offset it with the intro offer if you earn the $250 statement credit after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first six months from account opening.

Who should have this in their wallet: We think this card would be a good fit for anyone who regularly uses Uber or Lyft in conjunction with public transportation. If you tend to cook at home (spending up to $500 a month), we think you’ll also get a lot of value from the boosted 6% cash back on up to $6,000 on U.S. supermarket purchases (then 1%).

Other cards to consider: You can also earn 3X Membership Rewards points on transit purchases, including rideshare services with the American Express Green Card®, though you’ll earn 3X Membership Rewards points on dining at restaurants worldwide instead of 6% cash back at U.S. Supermarkets. The Apple Card also offers 3% back, but only on Uber (and only if you use Apple Pay).

All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Newsweek.com. The American Express® Green Card is no longer available through Newsweek.com.

Why we love this card: We love the easy, no-frills 2% back you earn with the Active Cash card. It simplifies earning credit card rewards on rideshare purchases because it doesn’t matter whether you use Lyft or Uber, and you’ll earn the same great cash rewards rate on all of your other purchases, too.

Who should have this in their wallet: If you’re a set-it-and-forget-it type, the Active Cash card lets you earn solid cash rewards with no fuss. It’s also a useful card to carry when you want to maximize your cash rewards, because you can use another card for boosting rewards in certain categories and this card for 2% cash rewards on everything else.

Other cards to consider: The Citi Double Cash® Card also gives an unlimited 2% cash back, although you’ll have to pay for your purchases before you earn the full amount. The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card offers a flat 1.5% unlimited cash back on purchases, no annual fee and a 15-month 0% intro APR offer on purchases and balance transfers (then 19.99% – 29.99% variable APR after that).

How To Choose the Right Credit Card for Ridesharing for You

The best card for ridesharing is one that earns rewards and fits your lifestyle. Before you choose, keep in mind your typical monthly spending, your preferred rideshare service and how you prefer to redeem rewards. Then, look for a card that meets those criteria and also provides the kind of benefits you’ll actually use.

Note Your Preferred Rideshare Service

Which do you use (or use most): Uber or Lyft? How much do you spend on ridesharing? Will benefits like Uber Cash help you? Make sure the card you’re considering rewards your preferred rideshare service, ideally with boosted points, cash back or membership perks.

Track Your Monthly Spending

In addition to your monthly rideshare spending, where else does your money go? For the best value, pick a card that rewards categories you already spend in, whether that’s groceries, restaurants, transit or something else.

Strategize Around Rewards Rates

Consider the potential rewards earning rate on both your rideshare spending and other category spending. Will you be able to maximize your earnings in a particular category with that card? Or will it make more sense to choose a flat-rate cash back card instead? Only you know your tolerance for tracking rewards by category.

Know How Often You Travel

Do you travel a lot or fly frequently? Cards that offer points that you can redeem for miles with your preferred airline or transfer to travel partners will likely be a good fit for you. You’ll also get more use out of a card with travel benefits (such as trip protection or airport lounge access) than someone who rarely travels.

Decide Whether You’ll Carry a Balance

If you tend to carry a balance, be sure to carefully compare annual percentage rates (APR), including penalty APRs and any introductory APR offers. You might also get more value out of a balance transfer offer with low fees if you need extra time to pay down a balance.

Determine your Tolerance for an Annual Fee

Will the annual fee be worth it? Calculate whether you’ll earn enough in rewards or use enough of the card’s perks and credits to offset the annual fee. If it’ll cost you more to carry the card than you’ll earn in benefits, consider a different card instead.

Alternatives

A new credit card isn’t the only way to benefit from your many Uber or Lyft rides. Review the cards already in your wallet for more ways to earn rewards or connect your account to other loyalty programs for boosted points or miles.

Buy Gift Cards

If you already have a rewards credit card, check what categories give you increased rewards. If they include supermarkets, gas stations or office supply stores, use that card to buy Uber or Lyft gift cards and load them to your account. Your gift card spending will earn you added rewards for that spending category.

Use Your Mastercard

If you already have an eligible Mastercard, you can earn a $5 or $10 Lyft credit each month when you take three or more rides with Lyft. World Mastercard®, World Elite Mastercard® and Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive Mastercard® are eligible. You can also score a 10% discount on scheduled airport rides with a World Elite Mastercard®, World Elite Mastercard® for Business or World Mastercard® for Business.

If you have a Bilt Mastercard®, you can earn 3X Bilt Points on your Lyft rides when you pay with your Bilt card and 2X points when your Lyft account is linked to your Bilt Rewards account and it’s selected as your loyalty rewards partner.

The PayPal Cashback Mastercard lets you earn 3% cash back when you add it to your PayPal account and use PayPal to check out. You’ll also earn 2% cash back on other purchases.

Connect a Loyalty Program

If you’re a Lyft rider, you can connect your Delta SkyMiles®, Hilton Honors® or Alaska Mileage Plan® accounts to your Lyft account to earn 1x, 2x or 3x points or miles with each ride.

As an Uber rider, you can earn 2x, 3x or 6x Marriott Bonvoy points when you connect your accounts and take eligible Uber rides or place eligible orders with Uber Eats.

More on our top Chase balance transfer credit cards

The Chase Slate Edge℠ is a no annual fee card with several features that can help you pay less interest, but doesn't earn rewards.

Get an automatic review for a higher credit limit when you pay on time and spend $500 in the first six months.

Notable perks

With the Chase Slate Edge , you are automatically considered for a 2% APR reduction if you pay your monthly bill on time and spend at least $1,000 on the card before your next account anniversary (terms apply). While you'll want a plan to pay off your balance transfer before the interest kicks in, this feature can help you lower your APR compared to what you might pay with other credit cards.

This card's insurance benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty protection, roadside dispatch and rental car collision and theft coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

[ Return to card summary ]

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of CNBC Select's top no-annual-fee cash-back credit cards with a unique intro bonus and a handful of useful benefits to complement its cash-back earnings.

  • 6.5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 5% back on Lyft rides (through Mar. 31, 2025)
  • 4.5% cash back on dining
  • 4.5% cash back at drug stores
  • 3% cash back on all other purchases (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year)

Earn an additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year).

Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 2025 and enroll for three complimentary months of DashPass (activate by Dec. 31, 2024). Purchases are also covered by a range of built-in protections like rental car collision damage insurance (secondary in the U.S.), extended warranty coverage, purchase protection and trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

While this is a cash-back credit card , you can boost the value of the rewards you earn by pairing this card with a Chase card that allows points transfers (such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ). By transferring the rewards you earn to travel partners like World Hyatt, United MileagePlus and Air Canada Aeroplan, you can potentially book luxury hotels and flights for fewer points.

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ packs a punch with generous rewards in bonus categories that change every quarter and an easy-to-earn welcome bonus.

  • 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent in categories that change each quarter, then 1% cash back (activation required)
  • 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining
  • 3% cash back at drug stores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Cardholders receive discounts and special perks with partners like Lyft and DoorDash. There are also many valuable built-in protections for a no-annual-fee card, including:

  • Cell phone insurance
  • Rental car insurance (secondary in the U.S.)
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Purchase protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

When you have a Chase card that unlocks the ability to transfer Chase points to hotel and airline partners (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) , it increases the value of the Freedom Flex. So this isn't only a strong standalone rewards credit card , but it has synergies with other cards.

How to complete a Chase balance transfer

Chase typically charges a balance transfer fee from 3% to 5% with a $5 minimum. Before you complete a balance transfer , be sure the interest you save will outweigh the fee.

There are several ways to do a balance transfer with Chase. One of the best and easiest options is to complete a balance transfer when you apply for a card. When you do this, you'll be able to make the most out of your intro APR because any 0% interest timeframe you qualify for begins when you open the card.

If you want to perform a balance transfer with a Chase card you already have, you'll need to log in to your account and follow these steps:

  • Click "Pay & Transfer"
  • Then click on the "Transfer" dropdown menu
  • Select "Card balance transfers"

You can then select any of your Chase cards from a dropdown menu and see what balance transfer offers are available.

Are Chase balance transfers worth it?

When you make a balance transfer, you'll generally pay a fee of 3% to 5% of the balance. To determine whether a balance transfer is worth it, calculate how much you would save in interest compared to how much you'd pay in transfer fees.

What is one disadvantage of a 0% interest balance transfer card?

Aside from the balance transfer fees, the biggest downside to a balance transfer is you'll have the same amount of credit card debt as before. If you don't have a plan, or the resources, to pay off your debt before the intro APR expires, you'll be stuck paying interest once again.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

A balance transfer doesn't directly hurt your credit score and could help improve your credit if you're able to pay down your debt. However, you'll want to keep in mind that your credit score will temporarily dip when you apply for new credit (including a balance transfer card).

Bottom line

The top balance transfer cards Chase issues offer intro APR periods of 15 to 18 months, and these intro APR offers also apply to purchases, making them even more useful. If you're interested in paying less interest , these are some of the best offers available. When you're in credit card debt, your primary focus should be repayment, not earning rewards, but the fact that some of the cards on this list earn rewards is a nice bonus.

Our methodology

To determine which Chase cards are best for balance transfers, CNBC Select analyzed the Chase credit cards with intro APR balance transfer offers. We compared each card on a range of features, including the annual fee, rewards, welcome bonus and balance transfer fee. We also considered additional perks, consumer protections, the application process when available and how easy it is to redeem rewards. However, when you're in credit card debt, your priority should be repayment, so we focused more on the cards that provide consumers with the cheapest ways to pay off their debt rather than the number of rewards they could potentially earn.
