Child Care Jobs Overview

Being a child minder (childcare specialist) or being involved in the children's activities at a resort or on a cruise ship is a job that may sound easy, but you will find yourself in some difficult situations. Usually the parents want to entrust someone with their precious children for a few hours while they enjoy some of the adult activities at the resort, on the cruise ship, or on the land excursions. You will have various types of child minder jobs, but in all of them, you will be expected to look after a certain number of children and provide them with lots of fun and entertainment while their parents are away. Some children will miss their parents, some with squabble with others, some with not want to join in, and some might be naughty. Types of Children's Activity Jobs

There are lots of children's activities that you can be involved in and lots of children's activity jobs that you can do while at your work location. You may be required as an au pair, which is a higher paying job that will require you to look after just one set of children for their parents. This job needs you to be comfortable talking, playing, interacting, and entertaining children for any length of time.

You could be called for as a babysitter while the parents want to go out for an evening, and you will be required to look after the children and make sure that eat dinner, wash, and go to bed on time. This job will be over and above your usual au pair or child minder day duties and you will normally be paid directly from the parents which will be extra money for you.

During the day, the cruise liner or beach resort will expect you to be at your position, ready to look after any children or prepare fun children's activities for the day. Child minder cruise ship jobs will normally include a ship based activity center for children where you will spend most of your time working. Sometimes you will be hired for the land excursions if parents want to go separate ways and you along with other child minders will organize an outing for a group of children.

Child care jobs at beach resorts can also require day outings for the children, but there are usually so many children's activities at the resort that you could find yourself teaching and playing miniature golf with a group, or doing some arts and crafts, organizing a party, or anything else that is required.

There is normally a children's activity position which is a supervisory role. You will plan all of the events and activities for the week or duration of the cruise, and you will control and manage the entire children's section. You will prepare safety procedures, involve medical staff if needed, and keep an eye on all the child minders that work under you.

On board all our family-friendly ships we have dedicated children’s clubs featuring fantastic social spaces designed for ages 6 months to 17 years.

Packed full of the latest gadgets, games, and creative play equipment, as part of our youth team you’ll help organise and run a daily schedule of fun activities and events, in both the children’s clubs and out and about around the ship.

From treasure hunts to team games, discos to drawing, each day brings a new adventure and an opportunity to use your childcare and/or educational qualifications to keep everyone active, happy and safe while making amazing holiday memories.

Our children’s facilities are open from morning until late night, so in the evening the fun continues with organised pyjama parties and movie nights, plus a Night Nursery for under-fours. Teens can also use our hang out zones to chill with new friends.

Life on board

Much like our little guests, our ships don’t stay still for long, so you’ll explore the world while you work. There’s lots of opportunities to explore ashore or relax in our crew areas on board and with all your meals provided, your free time really is your own to enjoy.

Being a close-knit community, you’ll share a cabin with one of your ship colleagues. There’s lots of social events to take part in and crew-only venues to enjoy such as the crew lounge, gym and outdoor decks.

The Reef – our children’s club facilities

All family-friendly ships have four children’s club rooms, each one dedicated to a specific age group:

• Splashers (2-4yrs)
• Surfers (5-8 years)
• Scubas (9-12 years)
• H2O (13-17 years)

Children under two are welcome to use the facilities of Splashers if their parents or guardians stay with them while they visit.

The Night Nursery is a quiet space where children age 6 months to 4 years can settle in for the night.

Cruise Staff Department

Our Cruise Staff make a dramatic impact on each guest’s cruise experience by conducting a variety of onboard activities for them to enjoy. Activities range from trivia games and contests to themed parties and dance lessons. This team is also responsible for hosting an array of special events onboard, including guest performers, group exercise classes, and even the occasional conga line.

Junior Assistant Cruise Director

The Junior Assistant Cruise Director is an entry-level position on the Cruise Staff team. This team provides fun and exciting activities for guests, like trivia games, Zumba® classes, ice sculpture demonstrations, dance lessons, and arts and crafts. In this role your goal is to help the Cruise Staff provide a premium entertainment package and make our guests’ vacations memorable. You contribute to these memories by actively participating in all events with enthusiasm and dedication.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience in the entertainment and hospitality field, including direct experience hosting activities for large groups. Confident/strong microphone experience is required. Entertainment talents such as dancing, singing, stage performance, hosting sports events, and arts and crafts are a plus, but candidates must be willing to participate in any/all such activities onboard as part of a team environment.

Assistant Cruise Director

In addition to the regular Cruise Staff responsibilities, the Assistant Cruise Director-DJ provides entertaining, engaging, and memorable DJ and emcee services throughout various shipboard venues.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years' DJ experience at corporate parties, weddings, or similar events; experience hosting karaoke; and a thorough knowledge of a variety of musical genres from 50s classics to today’s popular music. Applicants must include a Web link to their demo reel for consideration.

Deck & Technical

The Deck department is overseen by the Staff Captain and is responsible for navigating the ship as well as managing all safety-related matters, including environment and public health. This team works closely with the Technical department to ensure that all equipment is well maintained and meets international laws and regulations. The Technical department includes a variety of positions that range from entry-level roles, such as Deck Clerk, Trainees, and Cadets; to highly qualified seafarer roles, such as Environmental Officer, Security officers, and navigating officers all the way through to the ship’s Captain.

The Technical department is responsible for the efficient and cost-effective operation and maintenance of all onboard machinery and equipment, covering a wide range of areas including power generation and propulsion; heating and air conditioning; and deck, hotel, and entertainment support systems. The Technical department’s mission is to provide a safe, secure, and environmentally sound operation at all times. It is a dynamic department with a wide variety of roles and career opportunities.

Deck Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for safe navigation of the ship, maintaining a 24-hour watch by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Every ship employs three Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Officer, Senior 2nd Officer, and 2nd Officer to cover the three watches. Each watch is supported by a Junior Watchkeeper in the rank of 3rd Officer.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited Chief Mates Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

Environmental Officer

The Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring the highest possible levels of compliance by shipboard staff with all established environmental standards, in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must be a licensed Deck or Engineer officer holding a minimum of either a 2nd Deck Officer or 2nd Engineer Certificate of Competence, or at least five years' experience with environmental management systems.

Security Officer

Security Officers are responsible for leading a team of security personnel in monitoring guest and crew activities, investigating security matters that arise, and promptly reporting and correcting security issues in order to maintain a safe and secure shipboard environment in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience as a law enforcement officer or service in a maritime military/LE organization. Criminal Investigation experience is preferred as well as knowledge of ISPS code and experience with security surveillance and screening equipment.

Technical Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for maintaining a 24-hour watch in the ship’s Engine Room, by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Depending on vessel size, each ship employs either three or four Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Engineer and 2nd Engineer.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited 2nd Engineer Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

Hotel Services Engineer

The Hotel Services Engineer leads an onboard Hotel maintenance team in achieving the highest standards appearance for guests and crew area, prompting defect correction in a cost-efficient manner while in line with our company strategy and core values.

The Hotel Services Engineer is responsible for all aspects of Hotel maintenance utilizing the services of the tradesmen within his/her sub-department, as well as the electrical and ventilation departments. This position works closely with the Staff Electro-Technical Officer and the Ventilation Officer when required.

Requirements Applicants must have Technical qualification at OND or HND level or equivalent; a minimum of two years' experience in hotel or hospitality industry maintenance; the ability to read and understand technical drawings and manuals; and excellent technical knowledge to be able to manage, supervise, and guide officers and tradesmen of varying levels of expertise.

Second Plumbers

Second Plumbers are responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of the onboard water, sanitary, and heating systems in a cost-efficient manner that is in compliance with company safety standards.

Requirements Applicants must have experience with small repair, evacuation pumps, and welding. Prior experience in a hotel or shipboard environment is preferred.

3rd Engineer

Third Engineer Officers are responsible for operating, inspecting, and maintaining engines, machinery, and equipment in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner to the highest professional standards.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited Engineers Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

2nd Electro-Technical Officer

Second Electro-Technical Officers assist in leading a team of Electro-Technical staff in the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation, inspection, and repair of all shipboard electrical systems in compliance with company safety standards to ensure the protection and safety of all guests and crew members.

Requirements Applicants must hold an HND qualification in the electro-technical field and have a minimum one year's sea-time experience.

Entertainment & Guest Programs

Our Cruise Entertainment and Guest Program departments are multifaceted and incorporate a variety of teams that work together to create a captivating entertainment experience. We offer everything from lavish production shows to organized activities, games shows, and informative presentations. Food & Beverage Administration

The Food and Beverage Administration team (F&B) ensures an excellent guest experience through exceptional dining venues and fun and exotic drinks. As a member of the F&B team you are also responsible for identifying process improvements, reviewing operational concerns, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures in all bar and food service areas, and analyzing daily revenue and cost activities in accordance with overall performance, location, and outlet categories.

Food & Beverage Manager

The Food & Beverage Manager oversees the food and/or beverage operations onboard to achieve the highest level of customer service, maximize revenue opportunities, and control costs. This position supports a minimum of different restaurant and beverage outlets that contain exciting menus designed to match our numerous itineraries.

Requirements Applicants must have a degree from a recognized hotel/catering/culinary school; five years’ experience in a related senior management position with an extensive understanding of food production and restaurant service within the hotel or cruise ship industry; and a thorough knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and the effective distribution of goods.

Assistant Food & Beverage Manager

The Assistant Food & Beverage Manager assists in the management and administration of all onboard Food & Beverage areas to achieve the highest levels of customer service, revenue generation, and cost control.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years’ experience in a related F&B management position with experience in beverage operations, food production, and restaurant service within the hotel or cruise ship industry. A degree from a recognized hotel/catering/culinary school is preferred.

Junior Assistant Food & Beverage Manager

The Junior Assistant Food & Beverage Manager provides operational assistance and administrative support to onboard F&B management to achieve the highest levels of customer service, revenue generation, and cost control.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience in a related F&B management position with experience in beverage operations, food production, and restaurant service within the hotel or cruise ship industry. A degree from a recognized hotel/catering/culinary school is preferred.

Food & Beverage Operations

Restaurant department.

The Restaurant department is responsible for the operation of dining services in all Food & Beverage venues. Providing excellent customer service to our guests is a key function in this position and requires interaction with multiple departments and levels of management to ensure the operation functions smoothly. The Restaurant department includes a variety of positions that require differing skill sets, so applicants will be considered for positions suitable to their level of experience. The growth and training opportunities within this fast-paced and dynamic department are vast.

Requirements Applicants for entry-level positions must have a minimum of one year's experience in a restaurant, preferably in a fine dining establishment; good written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Bar Department

The Bar department looks after all front-of-house guest bars and supports back-of-house bar locations onboard all Princess vessels. This department is responsible for providing memorable experiences for our guests in terms of delivering high-quality beverages and warm, friendly, and professional service. This is an exciting department for individuals who enjoy customer interaction and have a "bubbly" personality. Entry-level positions within the Bar department include Bartender, Bar Steward, and Utility F&B Bars. The growth and training opportunities within this fast-paced and dynamic department are vast.

Requirements Applicants for entry-level positions must have a minimum of one year's experience in a Food & Beverage environment involving the service of beverages, a general knowledge of bar products and presentation, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision, and good written and verbal communication skills.

Culinary Arts

The Culinary department prides itself in preparing fresh, flavorful cuisine cooked with passion and care. This department is responsible for all food operations onboard the ship and manages food production for not only our guests but also our crew members. It is a very large and active department with a wide representation of the culinary arts. This department includes a variety of positions that require differing skill sets, so applicants will be considered for positions suitable to their level of experience.

Requirements Applicants for entry-level positions must have a minimum of one year's culinary experience at a hotel restaurant or resort, a general understanding of HACCP regulations and safe food-handling procedures, the ability to perform physical work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision, and good written and verbal communication skills.

Housekeeping Department

The Housekeeping department is responsible for maintaining the highest level of cleanliness and service in guest staterooms, public areas, and open decks as well as providing laundry services to both guests and crew members. This department is also responsible for the movement of baggage on and off the ship and making sure the ship is ready for new guests each and every cruise. Entry-level positions within this department include Utility Cleaner, Accommodations Attendant, and Laundry Steward.

Housekeeping Jobs

Requirements Applicants must have prior experience within the hospitality industry, an understanding of public health and environmental requirements relating to cabin service, good verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Human Resources

The shipboard Human Resources team works in conjunction with the shoreside Employee Relations team to implement and uphold all HR policies and initiatives in line with the company’s core values. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the Crew Welfare program, creating an optimal work environment to enhance the onboard employee experience, and supporting shipboard and shoreside management teams.

Human Resources Jobs

Requirements Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in human resources, adult education, or a related field from an accredited college or five years’ experience in shipboard operations, training, or employee relations. Knowledge of various international human resources standards in the areas of compensation, employee relations, general benefits, employment and staffing practices, and organizational development is preferred.

Information Technology

The onboard Information Technology team manages and supports all shipboard IT systems and operations while also providing maximum system use. The onboard team works closely with our shoreside IT department to continually improve our shipboard systems and technology. The focus is always on the guest experience and maintaining safe operations. We do this by keeping informed of the latest technological advancements, and providing service excellence in all aspects of technology.

The IT Officer is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and support of all onboard computer systems, mobile devices, physical and virtual servers, networks, point-of-sale terminals, network equipment, and peripherals. This consists primarily of level 1 and 2 support as well as system monitoring and troubleshooting. The IT Officer works closely with the shoreside IT group to ensure all onboard systems perform at optimum levels.

Requirements Applicants must have at least two years' related experience in areas of user support within a medium-sized LAN; a thorough knowledge of computer systems including but not limited to Linux, MS Office, Windows Client and Server editions; and experience troubleshooting PC hardware, software applications, and network connectivity. Additional requirements include the ability to meet deadlines and maintain an attention to detail and accuracy while working under pressure in a team environment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to lift and carry IT equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Management or supervisory experience and a BS or higher in computer science, MIS, or related field is strongly preferred.

Computer System Specialist

The Computer System Specialist is responsible for the level 1 support of all onboard computer systems. This includes installing and configuring new PC system hardware, upgrading existing hardware, and supporting mobile devices. The Computer System Specialist works closely with the IT Officer to ensure all onboard systems perform at optimum levels.

Requirements Applicants must have strong customer service skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks; proficiency in the use of computer business applications with working knowledge of PC / LAN systems, hardware and software applications; a minimum of two years’ experience in areas of user support and troubleshooting hardware and software issues; the ability to meet deadlines and maintain attention to detail and accuracy while working in a team environment; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to lift and carry IT equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Current CompTIA A+ 220-801 Certification, technical school certification, or three or more years of equivalent work experience is strongly preferred.

Medical Officers

As a member of the on board medical team, you will have the opportunity to travel the world and practice your medical profession at sea in an exciting, challenging and unique environment. The shipboard medical department prides itself in delivering high quality, patient-centered, evidence based healthcare to guests and crew. Doctors are primarily responsible for providing individualized outpatient, inpatient and ICU care for guests and crew. Doctors consult both crew and guests, providing timely, safe and evidence-based assessments, formulating differential diagnoses and treatment plans, performing clinical interventions and procedures, and coordinating logistics of referrals and evacuations. Doctors manage the preventative health and wellness programs for crew, and are also responsible for adhering to public health practices.

Doctors will also perform various technical and non-clinical administrative tasks that support the efficient and safe operation of the medical center. Additional duties include participation in drills, audits, inspections and training of other crew members. Technical skills are learned and practiced on board, such as X-rays acquisition, and performing a wide-array of laboratory tests and other procedures. Doctors work closely with shipboard nurses and paramedics, and report to the ship’s Senior Doctor.

Nurses are primarily responsible for providing individualized outpatient, inpatient and ICU care for guests and crew. Nurses also act as a first responders, triaging emergency calls, assessing and treating on scene, and transferring patients to the shipboard medical center for definitive care. Technical skills are learned and practiced on board, such as X-rays acquisition, and performing a wide-array of laboratory tests and other procedures.

Healthcare Assistance: (HCA)

Healthcare Assistants are an essential part of the medical team onboard, effectively supporting the team with a broad range of clinical, laboratory and administrative tasks. Healthcare assistants conduct health screening, surveillance testing, vaccine campaigns, and work closely with onboard medical staff and admin assistants in attending to patients during daily clinics.

Healthcare Assistants perform various technical and non-clinical administrative tasks that support the efficient and safe operation of the medical center under the direction and supervision of the Senior Nurse. Primary responsibilities include laboratory specimen collection for COVID-19 surveillance testing, all associated administrative functions and onboard laboratory specimen processing procedures. Other duties include basic assessment and triage, assisting with patient care and activities of daily living, specimen collection for other tests and procedures, patient education and vaccination campaigns. Additional duties include equipment checks, medicines and consumables inventory management, participation in drills, audits, inspections, and training of other crew members. Technical skills are learned and practiced on board.

Public Health Officer

As a Public Health Officer you will monitor shipboard public health and infection control procedures and assist both shipboard Management and Corporate Public Health Director in overseeing the implementation and compliance with shipboard prevention and control activities at all response levels including for COVID-19, AGE, and other communicable diseases.

Additionally, you will participate as a key member of the shipboard Outbreak Management Team (OMT), coordinate the implementation and compliance with OMT decisions and oversee the correct and safe storage, par levels, condition, and use of all infection control related PPE, disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and other supplies and related equipment.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, biological sciences, or closely related field preferred. Certification in CDC-VSP, Infection Control, and EU SHIPSAN preferred.
• Two years of shipboard experience or three years of full-time shoreside experience in implementing, overseeing, or auditing public health programs.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of infection control practices and Vessel Sanitation Standards. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced cruise ship environment, while prioritizing workloads. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate to culturally diverse teams. Self- sufficient and able to work independently.
• Critical Professional related Technical Skills: Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Experience with electronic health record platforms.
• Cruise industry experience is preferred.

Photography & Video Departments

Onboard photography is primarily centered on portrait and event photography, using both natural locations and onboard studio setups with backdrops and studio lighting. Our Videographers produce a souvenir DVD documenting the cruise experience from beginning to end, showing both onboard entertainment and port tours and destinations. The work is fast-paced, high-volume, and high-quality. Attention to detail, teamwork, and outstanding customer service are the most important elements of this job. You will be shooting photos and videos both ashore and on the ship, processing photos and editing video footage, selling the finished products and other retail items, and providing top-quality customer service to our guests.

Staff Photographer

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of one year's photography work experience or two years of formal photography training. Strong computer skills and digital photography experience are preferred. We provide all digital equipment and a state-of-the-art onboard lab for use during work hours. Retail sales or customer service experience is also preferred.

Video Producer

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of one year of videography work experience or two years of formal video production training. Strong shooting and editing skills are required and prior sales and customer service experience is preferred. All video and editing equipment is provided onboard.

Production Technicians

Princess Cruises sets the standard for cruise line entertainment and offers exciting shipboard positions for knowledgeable and professional Technical Production staff. Assistant Production Manager-Lighting

The Assistant Production Manager-Lighting is responsible for programming and operating lighting systems within multiple shipboard venues. This role safely delivers functioning and well-maintained lighting, pyrotechnic, and video systems in support of a dynamic, engaging, and memorable entertainment and activities program.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience operating, designing, and maintaining MA Lighting, Flying Pig Systems consoles; High End, Vari-Lite, GLP, Martin Professional fixtures; Green Hippo, Catalyst media servers; and familiarity with Pyrodigital console operation.

Assistant Production Manager-Audio

The Assistant Production Manager-Audio is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and programing of live audio within a variety of onboard venues as assigned by shipboard management. This role safely delivers functioning and well-maintained audio systems in support of a dynamic, engaging, and memorable entertainment and activities program.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience operating and maintaining large-format consoles and mixed media playback. Equipment operating specifics: Digidesign Venue Profile and SC48 consoles, iZ Corp RADAR playback system, LCS Matrix 3 automated surround-sound system, PeaveyMedia Matrix audio interface, QSC Q-SYS Integrated System, and Countryman/Shure UHF wireless microphones.

Assistant Production Manager-Crew Chief

The Assistant Production Manager-Crew Chief is responsible for safely operating functioning and well-maintained rigging/automation systems and associated props and scenery in support of a dynamic, engaging, and memorable entertainment and activities program. In addition, this role assists in the general operation of the venue while managing assigned production staff.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience operating and maintaining Tait Towers Navigator systems and Stage Technologies Acrobat/Chameleon systems. A good understanding of rigging principles and practice is required. Strong organizational skills with excellent inter-personal skills are essential.

Stage Crew are responsible for assisting the Production team with the maintenance of all equipment, scenery, and props as well as show and event preparation pertaining to A/V equipment, scenic goods, props, lighting, and rigging.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of one year's professional work experience with a technical theater background and must possess a solid understanding of basic theater principles to effectively work with mechanized stage equipment, pyrotechnic product, lighting equipment, scenic items and props, rigging and audio equipment, as assigned.

Pursers Department

The Pursers department is the center of Hotel operations onboard all Princess vessels. This dynamic department encompasses a variety of roles and is responsible for the management of hotel accounts, shore excursions, and shipboard personnel operations such as the Crew Office.

Junior Assistant Purser

Junior Assistant Purser is the entry-level position into the Pursers department. Most Junior Assistant Pursers initially begin their onboard career at the Front Desk where responsibilities include providing exceptional customer service to each guest, assisting guests with account inquires, resolving customer service issues, and answering telephone calls. This position offers excellent career development and promotion opportunities in hotel management.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience in the hotel/hospitality industry performing junior management duties and front desk responsibilities at a large hotel. Applicants must also be computer literate, have experience with large volume cash handling, possess mathematical and analytical skills, and have excellent customer service skills. Secretarial skills and foreign language fluency are also preferred.

Stewarding Department

The Stewarding department is responsible for maintaining meticulous sanitation and hygiene standards in all Galley areas, ensuring that operating procedures are upheld and adhered to at all times. This includes the proper cleaning, handling, and storage of tableware, cookware, silverware, and Galley equipment.

Stewarding Jobs

Requirements Applicants must have a basic knowledge of cleaning and sanitation procedures for the food service industry, good verbal communications skills, and the ability to perform physical labor in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.

Youth Department

Our team of Youth Staff offer an exciting program for kids and teens ages 3-17. The Princess Youth Program is offered on all vessels, year-round in state-of-the-art, dedicated facilities. Our centers are equipped with digital jukeboxes, foosball, air hockey, skeeball, DJ booths, video game stations and more. Our Youth Staff offer a variety of activities, including games, sports, science workshops, and educational programs. Individuals who are outgoing, enthusiastic, energetic and have an interest in entertaining kids of any age are encouraged to apply.

Youth Staff Jobs

Requirements Applicants for Youth Staff must have a minimum of two years’ work experience in a youth/child care-related or teaching field or previous employment in a recreational or educational setting such as camp counseling, coaching,  and/or leading outdoor or community-center activities. Experience supervising kids in a group setting is also required. Experience with children of several ages is strongly preferred, as counselors must be willing to work with any age group to which they are assigned.

The Job of a Cruise Ship Youth Counselor

Leona Guthrie of San Antonio, Texas, worked for a major cruise line as a teen director during the summer. She reports that the cruise line she worked for provided her with an excellent opportunity to combine travel while earning a living.

I became interested in working for a cruise line after I took a vacation aboard a another cruise ship. I noticed that everyone working seemed to be having a great deal of fun. At the same time, I needed to find something else to do with my life; my current job just wasn’t that much fun. So I purchased The Cruise and Travel Employment Program and soon after sending out my resume and photo, I was contacted by several different cruise lines about employment.

SIDENOTE – If you’re looking for this type of work then definitely look at the Disney cruise line jobs page in this section. Most major cruise lines need youth counselors but Disney…hey…you know they have a lot of needs!

I ended up taking a position as the teen director aboard a large ship. I really enjoyed the experience. It was actually a position they created for me, as I have teaching experience, but I didn’t want to work with children as a youth director. Working with teenagers is both exhausting and exhilarating. I also worked as the karaoke host and other social duties as needed. The person who does the hiring for cruise staff positions called and interviewed me over the phone. I’d say that’s something prospective applicants should remember. You’ve got to be able to speak well on the phone.

The ship I was on made regular trips to eastern Caribbean islands and those in the western Caribbean. I got to visit so many wonderful, beautiful places; it was just incredible. I’ve been to Cozumel, Grand Caymans, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. It’s easy to forget that you are working, and I think that’s a mistake many new employees make. They have to remember that the job comes first. And you are never really on your own time. I worked from 10:00AM to 12:30AM, seven days a week. Of course, you get breaks during that time, but you still always represent the cruise line, no matter where you go. My company really encouraged the cruise staff to get off the ship when it was in port and explore whatever island we were at. That way when we got back onboard we could better answer the passengers’ questions about what the island is like, where to go, and what to do. And as a member of the cruise staff, I got asked questions all the time.

One thing that really surprised me was the variety of jobs available onboard and how many opportunities there were for Americans. Our ship was typical of most cruise ships in that almost all of the cruise staff and casino jobs were filled by Americans. The staff working in the beauty salon were also American. The people who worked in the laundry were primarily from Indonesia; the kitchen staff, primarily Portuguese. The laundry and kitchen staff would work nine months straight; they were not allowed to leave the ship while in port. The officers on this ship were Italian and Greek. As a member of the cruise staff, I got to eat in a separate mess just with the officers, which provided a great opportunity to get to know them. But I should warn people that cruise lines are very strict about staff fraternizing with other employees or with passengers. It was definitely against policy to become romantically involved with staff members or passengers.

After I was hired, my boss faxed me a packing list. A uniform was provided, but I was asked to bring a formal dress, white socks, and tropical sportswear for theme days. They said to bring one formal outfit, but I brought more. Women need more than one dress. But it is true what you don’t bring you can always buy later. The shopping in Puerto Rico is great. People should pack an extra suitcase that will fold up, fitting into a big suitcase. You’ll need it later with all the things you’ll end up buying along the way. Also, pack a good pair of cross-trainer shoes. In preparing to leave, be sure to find a good storage company. Most people give up their apartments or move out of their houses when they take a job on a ship. It’s just too expensive to keep paying rent while you’re away. I found an excellent place that even stored my car.

Working in the industry was a great experience. They are one of the few cruise lines to provide transportation to and from their homeport of Miami. I live in San Antonio, Texas, and they paid my airfare to Miami. But my understanding is this is pretty unusual. I think they are maybe less intense than some of the other larger cruise lines. They have verbal agreements with employees regarding their length of stay, rather than written contracts, which is also unusual in the industry. And they are pretty flexible, especially if you give them plenty of notice if you are thinking about leaving early. However, if you do quit, they won’t pay your airfare back. Still, it’s a great company to work for, but you have to know what to expect. And you have to have the personality in which you can get along with anyone no matter what cruise line you work on. Sharing a small, cramped room with another person really mandates that. I believe one of the main reasons there is so much turnover with employees is they forget they are there for the job first. They are not the ones on vacation. But it’s easy to forget when you find yourself surrounded by such a beautiful tropical setting.

Even short cruises are packed with activities for travelers to engage in. Among other things, you'll find games, happy hours and live music.

An activities coordinator is similar to an event planner. In this role, you oversee things like recreation on board and coordinating shore excursion activities. The BLS does not offer wage information for this position.

It’s no secret that people on cruises like to drink. Many cruise lines offer a food and alcohol package as part of the booking process.

The amount of money you can make working as a bartender on a cruise ship varies greatly, depending on whether guests are expected to tip. But the average salary for bartenders is $29,380 annually.

Casino dealer

Working as a dealer at a cruise casino can be an exciting gig. These workers may oversee poker, blackjack, roulette, and more games.

Gambling service workers make $31,290 a year. However, as with tending bar, the actual wages for casino workers on a cruise can vary.

Many cruise ships have cafeterias and restaurants for when guests are in the mood for fine dining.

Cruise ship chefs may be involved in cooking and planning menus for guests and staff. Chefs or head cooks make $56,520 on average annually.

Deckhands help maintain the cruise ship. They may be involved in keeping these massive ships running, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, loading cargo, and getting passengers safely on board.

The experience required to work as a deckhand can vary greatly depending on the job description. The BLS does not offer salary information for this position.

Entertainer

Cruise lines hire all sorts of entertainers, from dancers to cover bands and magicians.

Working on a cruise ship can be a great way to hone and improve your craft or even take it in a different direction. The average wage for entertainers and performers is $29.67 an hour, which equates to about $61,713 annually.

Entertainment directors may be involved in scheduling staff, planning performances, and doing administrative work. The average salary for entertainment/recreation managers is $67,220 annually.

Fitness instructor

Many cruise ships also offer various fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spin, and more.

For qualified instructors, this can be a great way to stay healthy, make money, and travel the world all at the same time. The average fitness instructor makes $45,380 annually.

Hair/makeup artist

On cruise ships, hair and makeup artists may work in spas, providing services to guests looking to get pampered while on board, and may be needed to work with the ship’s performers.

The BLS groups barbers, hairstyles, and cosmetologists together and states an average of $33,400 annual salary for these workers.

Since a cruise ship is essentially a floating hotel, many employees with experience working in hospitality are needed.

Hotel directors ensure that guests are comfortable and enjoy their experience. They may also be involved in planning and coordinating cruise activities.

The average salary for lodging managers is $61,910 annually.

Some cruise ships also hire nurses to provide care to passengers and cruise staff.

The amount of money nurses make on average usually depends on the type of nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) make $81,220 annually. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) make $54,620 a year.

Massage therapist

Many cruise passengers opt to take advantage of spa services. Massage therapists may work in a spa or travel to guests’ rooms with their equipment to provide massages.

Licensed massage therapists make just under $49,860 annually on average.

Cruise ships also frequently employ security staff to ensure the safety of guests and crew members. These workers may patrol the ship regularly and respond to any issues that come up.

The average salary for security guards is $33,030 annually.

Eating often and well is a big draw for many cruise passengers. Ships often have several restaurants on board and employ experienced servers to staff them.

Pay for these workers can vary, depending on the cruise line’s tipping policy. The average salary for a server in the U.S. is $29,120 annually.

Sales associate

Part of the beauty of the typical cruise ship is that it’s kind of like a floating mall, filled with gift shops and retail stores galore. Ships often need many sales associates to staff these stores.

Again, depending on the cruise line and the job, the pay for these gigs may vary. However, BLS data puts the average salary for a retail sales worker at $30,750 annually.

That’s not huge money, but perhaps it's enough for students to get ahead financially during breaks between school years.

Bottom line

Working as a cruise crew member is certainly not for everyone — lodging for staff can be cramped, days can be long, and you might be away from home for weeks at a time.

But for those looking to tap into a new source of income as they travel, it just may be a win-win situation.

Congress examines how to address rising child care costs for families & providers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — More affordable child care is needed nationwide but many centers are struggling just to cover operating costs.

“We’ve been in survival mode for a while,” said Amy Brooks, executive director at the Early Care and Education Association .

That’s how Amy Brooks describes the current environment for child care centers. She operated one for 20 years in New Hampshire and she said workforce is one of the biggest barriers for providers.

“Trying to balance keeping child care affordable in a payroll heavy industry and not putting that burden directly on to parents,” she said.

Brooks said many providers won’t raise their prices which means it’s difficult to boost pay for employees.

“Any other small business, they charge the customer enough to help cover the cost of their workforce and their cost of operating, in child care we’re not able to do that,” she said.

This week, Brooks voiced those concerns directly to Congress during the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

“I work with these child care businesses on a daily basis and they tell me they are struggling to reach the break even point,” said Brooks during the congressional hearing.

Brooks said increasing prices at child care centers means fewer families who can afford those services.

This comes as one national study found this growing child care crisis is leading to $122 billion in lost earnings, productivity, and revenue every year. Federal data also shows thousands of people have to stay home from work each month because of child care problems.

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen believes something has to change.

“Families across America are relying on us to help child care providers stay open and provide affordable care options,” said Sen. Shaheen, (D) New Hampshire.

Republican Senator Joni Ernst believes states may have some of the answers. She pointed to her home state of Iowa and how the governor helped create thousands of new child care center openings.

“Governor Reynolds in my home state of Iowa is setting an example we can all learn from, she incentivized employers to provide childcare and encouraged local governments to collaborate with businesses of all sizes to address their community’s child care shortages,” said Sen. Ernst, (R) Iowa.

During the congressional hearing, some experts also suggested expanding access to various child care options.

“State and local lawmakers should consider establishing multiple levels of licensing standards with a goal of increasing those in home, faith based, and employer provided child care,” said Rachel Greszler from the Heritage Foundation.

Some lawmakers want to make it easier for child care centers to access federal funding. One proposal would allow nonprofit providers to participate in certain loan programs of the Small Business Administration.

2 young children left home alone while mother went on cruise, court records say

HOUSTON — A woman is facing charges after two children were found to be left alone at home for multiple days earlier in the month in Houston.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, has been charged with abandoning a child with intent to return, according to KTRK.

Williams is accused of leaving her 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son at home alone while she went on a cruise, the news outlet reported.

Court records obtained by KTRK said that neighbors at Williams’ apartment building saw her leave with luggage on April 4 but never came back.

A welfare check was done on April 9 after one of the neighbors contacted police because they were worried about the safety of the children, court records indicated, according to KHOU.

When officers entered the apartment, they reportedly found it filled with trash and leftover food. The children told officers that their mother went on a cruise and they did not know when she would be back, the news outlet reported. Officers found a camera inside the apartment that Williams reportedly used to keep an eye on the children and a cellphone that the boy used to text her.

The Houston Fire Department was called to check on the children to make sure they were OK. Child Protective Services was also contacted and the children were released into the custody of their aunt, court records said, according to KHOU .

Investigators contacted Williams but she was not cooperative with them. She was eventually located and arrested Thursday evening, the news outlet reported.

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape MEC for Finance and Economic Opportunities Mireille Winger says tourism has the potential to continue generating significant revenue for the province.

She was speaking at the Cape Town cruise terminal on Friday.

For the first time, two royal cruise ships - the Queen Victoria and the Queen Mary 2 - have docked in the harbour.

Trade and investment promotion agency Wesgro predicts that during this cruise season alone, around 3,000 jobs have been created.

Wenger says over 90,000 passengers in 2023/24 cruise season are expected this year. 

During the 2022/23 season, R1.2 billion in revenue was generated, an encouraging indicator for the current cruise season.

"It’s very exciting to be able to welcome both the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Victoria cruise ships at the same time, for the first time to the Cape Town cruise terminal. 

"This exciting occasion shows that tourism and cruise tourism is on the up in the Western Cape. This is great news because more tourists, mean more jobs in our province."

Wenger attributed the success of this flourishing area of tourism in the province to its partnership with the private sector.

A Cruise Lines International Association report found that 63% of cruise passengers were likely to revisit destinations encountered through cruise tourism, and with 70 and 65 confirmed ship visits for the 2022/23 and 2023/24 cruise seasons respectively, the sector continues to boost the province's tourism revenue.

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center. 

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city. 

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

• The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
• Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
• Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
• The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Update:

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has cancelled the missing child alert after the boy was found safe.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said a 10-year-old boy is missing.

A Florida Missing Child Alert was issued for Edward “Malcolm” Dillard out of Vero Beach.

He was last seen Friday near the 900 block of 24th Place Southwest.

Edward wore an orange shirt with “Tapout” on the front and khaki shorts.

Officials said he goes by “Malcolm.”

If you have any information about where he may be, contact FDLE or the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office at 772-978-6240 or 911.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
