Circle Line Best of NYC Cruise Review

Cross under 20 bridges and see all five boroughs of New York City

Since 1945, Circle Line has shown visitors New York City from the city's major waterways. The three-hour Full Island Cruise offers visitors a chance to circumnavigate the entire island of Manhattan, and see many of New York City's popular attractions , including the Statue of Liberty , Ellis Island , South Street Seaport and the Empire State Building .

About Circle Line's Best of NYC Cruise

Circling Manhattan on the Full Island Cruise is a great way to get an overview of the layout of Manhattan and New York City. It's no wonder that over 60 million passengers have ridden on Circle Line's various cruises -- they offer a unique and manageable way to get an overview of New York City's many attractions.

Throughout the three-hour cruise, a tour guide narrates through the boat's speaker system, pointing out important landmarks, sharing trivia and highlighting some of the history of New York City. The trip includes a closeup pass of the Statue of Liberty -- perfect for picture taking, and for many visitors on a short visit this is a great opportunity to view the popular attraction as part of a larger tour. Seeing downtown Manhattan from the water is truly remarkable, as is discovering the northern reaches of Manhattan, which are surprisingly lush and green.

Three-hours is a bit on the long side to be on the boat -- though there is plenty of space for walking about, children might be happier on the shorter 2-hour semi-circle cruise.

Essential Information about the Circle Line's Best of NYC Cruise

  • The sightseeing cruise leaves from Pier 83 between 42nd and 43rd Streets at 12th Avenue
  • Mass Transit to Circle Line Pier : A/C/E, 1/2/3, N/R/Q, 7 or S to 42nd St./Times Square - change to the M42 or M50 Bus running along 42nd Street which will take you to the 42nd Street Pier
  • Circle Line's Full Island Cruise is available with The New York Pass and CityPass for a $5 upgrade.
  • Circle Line Payment : Cash and Major Credit Cards
  • Circle Line's Full Island Cruise Schedule - cruises are offered daily throughout the year, with more options during the summer and just a single sailing during the colder winter months
  • During peak times tickets sell out, especially if you have your heart set on a particular cruise, so plan to arrive early to buy your tickets or be flexible about the cruise you go on.
  • The ship is not designed to accommodate handicapped people -- there are narrow stairs down to the bathrooms, etc., but the crew will do what they can to accommodate you.

Helpful Tips for Circle Line's Full Island Cruise

  • Concessions, including beer and wine, are available on board, but you can bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. The souvenir mug with free refills of soda is a good value.
  • They begin boarding the boat about 30 minutes before departure -- you'll want to arrive in time to buy your tickets (which could take 15 minutes, especially on weekends and school breaks) to be near the front of the line. The most desirable seats are along the left-hand side of the boat, as that is the side closest to Manhattan throughout the ride.
  • Wear sunscreen if you plan to sit outside or stand at the bow of the boat -- despite the breeze, you can get quite a bit of sun.
  • After the cruise departs, they open up the bow of the boat for standing room only -- it's worth checking out the view from there, despite the crowds.
  • Bathrooms on board tend to be cleanest early in the trip -- plan accordingly.
  • You can book tickets online . You also will need to exchange the ticket voucher for a boarding pass in the ticketing line once you arrive, so there's really no advantage to buying your tickets online.

Stunning views - the tour guide wasn't a good storyteller - so we didn't tip - he made the whole thing feel very touristy - prepare better - tell exciting stories maybe you will succeed then... don"t understand why people do a bad job in NYC when they depend on tips. Back home we have people who studied archtitecture and art history doing high quality city tours...

Circle Line is a popular and well known sightseeing cruise line company in NYC. They have many "boats" and run tours daily. Most interesting was that the boat we were on was used to ferry firemen and EMT to the plane that Scully landed in the Hudson! According to the boat officer I spoke to. Our group wasn't very crowded. There was plenty of seating and that was a welcome since it was a bit chilly if you wanted to stand outside. They even have a "deli" at the back of the boat where you can get food and drink. Our tour director who spoke over the speakers was entertaining and very knowledgeable. He pointed out many interesting sights and buildings during our almost 2 hour cruise around Manhattan. The best part of course was visiting Ellis island and seeing Lady Liberty! They stopped there and gave us ample time to take pictures and take in her beauty. If it's your first time visiting Manhattan, you have to take this cruise.

circle line cruise ship

We did the Harbor Lights Cruise (about 1.5 hours). The boat was pretty crowded, so the best views were to go outside to take pictures. We passed by the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, and a close up view of the Statue of Liberty. I heard the selection of snacks was subpar. Our tour guide told a bunch of dad jokes along the way, that was probably met with more groans than laughter. 2023 #121

Where do I begin? I paid for a hot chocolate cruise for the kids and no hot chocolate was provided. Furthermore they said the ship was decorated in Christmas attire and fully outfitted for photos. Please see pictures attached. Those things don't bother me as much as the poor attitude of the serving crew. Between the lack of knowledge (example saying things are in stock or out of stock and not knowing if it's accurate) I asked for nachos- we are out- 30 mins later they have nachos. They were out of wine, 10 mins later they find it. No white wine whatsoever. Etc etc etc. the lack of knowledge could be okay, I could explain that away. But the staff, the attitude, was so bad. I felt bad even asking them for a drink, THAT I AM PAYING FOR!!!. Almost thought I was finished then I realized 30 mins before the cruise ended they did "last call" no big deal. What is a big deal Was that they also cut off bathrooms so my toddler (who was then filled up on soda hotdogs ) could not use the restroom. I will absolutely not get these 2.5 hours back in NY. I come here annually and have done other cruises and had an amazing time. The guy doing the tour, the speaker if you will, was extremely knowledgeable however the rest of the situation took so much away...

Hello Sondra, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. This is not the experience we strive to offer guests. We would like to discuss further, please contact me directly at [email protected] at your convenience. Hope to hear from you!

We did the Harbor Lights cruise, and felt like 2-hours was plenty considering what we experienced. Gorgeous views of the nighttime skyline, and a closeup view of the Statue of Liberty. I thought our tour speaker was excellent - but easily drowned out at several points. That said, I agree with others, sometimes you just want to enjoy the cruise with minimal chatter. There was one lost-in-translation moment between my daughter and a staff member - she asked if we could sit up top, he said it's reserved for premier/reserved tickets folks, so we initially sat at the bottom until we saw folks streaming by going upstairs. It turned out that he was actually referring to a specially cordoned-off section upstairs. It was a nice experience, and worth trying once.

Dec 1, 2023

Glad to know you enjoyed your cruise! We apologize for any miscommunication regarding the sectioned off area for Premier. We will discuss this with our team and make improvements to how this information is communicated. We hope to welcome you back on board in the future!

Native New Yorker being a tourist in New York. The boat ride was nice. Entertaining tour guide. I didn't need to pay extra for the outdoor seating since we were standing at the front of the boat the entire ride. I do recommend it but stick with the regular pricing.

I've been wanting to do the Fall Foliage Cruise for a long while and saw some posts on IG which made me finally do it. Man, were those posts highly embellished. To start, the entrance to boat process was super discombobulated. They half assed checked tickets and just slapped on the "Premiere" wristband based on us telling them we have Premiere tickets lol. There was no security check whatsoever. No one directed us to our Premiere seating area. Had to ask for it. Their idea of this "special" area is a roped off corner with half cushioned seats and half folding chairs like everyone else's non-Premiere seats. They claimed someone would be by to take food/drinks orders shortly. It never happened. It was at least an hour in before that happened. There wasn't any sort of introduction to the Premiere members of what's available to us and where. I didn't know where the "private restroom" was until the trip back when I went to the top outdoor deck. Also, did not hear a single tune of the live music where I was. Why it wasn't broadcasted throughout the entire boat is beyond me. Instead we heard the guide yapped too much. When I was at the top deck, it was unattended for over 30 minutes. Premiere members just started manning the bar themselves. Then some altercation happened between staff member and a guest. I mean, what do you expect when you leave a bar unattended in your supposedly VIP section? Come to find out later, the crew was severely understaffed with 6 members while there were supposed to be 14. That sucks for them. But if someone had taken leadership and announced that to the guests, it would've been much better than trying to hide it. Also, they were absolutely inefficient in handling the misfortune. There should be leadership training somewhere. Also, staff should be in uniform including their jackets The food we had: Sausage & egg bagel - surprisingly decent Bratwurst platter - pretty good but they ran out of potatoes which sucked Coffee - abysmal, it was water with a hint of coffee Overall, not saying don't go at all. But def don't waste your money on "Premiere". None of us in our section felt anything about the experience besides the price tag was premiere. Save your $60. Prices for food on board were a bit lower than ballpark food. Don't think you'll be spending $60 on food per person. Plus there's food at Bear Mountain too. Honestly, they should be refunding $60 to all the Premiere guests that day.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sad to know that you did not enjoy your Premier experience with us. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention, we will utilize this information to improve services going forward. Please contact us directly at [email protected] so we can discuss further. Hope to hear from you!

The Sunset cruise around Manhattan was a delightful way to see New York from a different perspective. Circle Line has limited drink options and the tour part of the cruise was useless since we couldn't hear anything the tour guide was saying, but we didn't really buy tickets for the person speaking. You take a cruise around the city for the experience of being on the water as the sun sets over the city. If you have a love of the water or cityscapes, then taking the sunset cruise is where it's at. Be sure to sit on the outside area of the boat on the back left because it comes with the best views. You can see more of our experience in our travel episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/e37jnnbqgt0

We bought Premier tickets for 'Best of NYC.' Premier ticket holders board the boat first. The only reserved seating on the boat were the black cushioned chairs with arms, located inside. Outdoor seating was on a first come basis. The boat was half full. During the purchase, we were not told that the boat was not going around Manhattan. While on the boat, the tour guide told us that due to tide conditions we may not be able to go around Manhattan. When it was decided that we would not be going around Manhattan, we turned back. The tour guide repeated himself several times on our return trip. We did pass our point of origin and went as far as General Grant National Memorial before heading back. The tour guide made too many obvious mistakes during his narration. He mentioned his living and financial situation a few times. I guess it was to garner sympathy so people would tip more generously. I found this tacky. One's work should speak for itself.

Thank you for your detailed review, Sam. We appreciate you taking the time to share you experience with us. We will discuss ways to improve the tour narration when the cruise is unable to circumnavigate the island. We hope to sail with you again in the future! Best, Jessica W.

Review of Grand Circle Cruise Line

One of the industry's  small cruise companies , GCCL-Grand Circle Cruise Line (gct.com) was established in 1958 as a travel company serving the American Association of Retired People (AARP). Since then, Grand Circle has expanded as an independent cruise company offering meaningful experiences for the "over-50's". Today GCCL offers a full range of cruise tours and land tour programs. The company's main business is discounted, extended-stay travel vacation programs in Europe, most occurring during winter in the south of Spain. Grand Circle also provides escorted tours all around the world, with a strong emphasis on enrichment.

Grand Circle Cruise Line logo

In 1985 the company was acquired by Alan and Harriet Lewis. They took operations to higher levels by building on the company's original base and expanding the destinations and offerings available. A continuing feature has been the right decision to avoid public advertising, focusing on referrals, past guests and direct requests for information. The Program Directors of the company started out as resident hosts, lecturers, and guides and developed over the years into hallmark service for the Grand Circle company. With each new program and destination, regional offices were opened across the globe, providing support and monitoring operations in an area. The new options often came at request or suggestion of past passengers, who form sort of an "alumni" association.

Starting in 1997, the company began promoting European river sailings on partially or fully chartered ships to its clientele. Due to the enthusiastic response, Grand Circle tried to ensure both excellent qualities of the product and control of the operations by deciding to have its own ships built - River Symphony was the first one in 1998, followed by a series of constantly improved ships over the years in various regions of the Mediterranean, Europe, Russia, and Egypt. Grand Circle also runs chartered operations in Antarctica, Europe, Panama, China, and Burma, under both the Overseas Adventure and Grand Circle brands.

Along with the current operations, mention should be made of company's sense of commitment to responsible tourism in the regions where it operates. During the last 20 years, the Grand Circle Foundation has committed more than US$92 million to advance education and preserving cultural traditions. In Egypt's Valley of the Kings, Grand Circle has funded the construction of shade/information pavilions to make the travel experience more worthwhile. The Foundation also supports around 100 schools in 30 different countries.

Grand Circle Cruise Experience

Grand Circle Cruise Line offers a full range of small-ship cruises for the over-50 set.

As with all Grand Circle Cruise Line's programs, company's passengers are over 50, in some cases even much more so. The line doesn't market to families and doesn't accept kids as passengers. Its guests are generally well traveled, with large percentage repeat passengers and members of their Inner Circle loyalty program, an organization for those who have made 3 or more trips with the line. The majority of passengers are married couples, though clusters of friends sailing together and singles are not unusual. Given Grand Circle's focus on learning experiences, most of the company's guests are open-minded and curious, eager to try new things.

Since Grand Circle is an American cruise line and generally does whole-ship trips, the language of the day at all times is the English. The crews, and most especially the company's Program Directors, are at the very least conversationally fluent. Most of Grand Circle passengers are Americans or American-connected.

While the ships of the line are designed for the regions in which they operate, they are as much about comfort as a destination. All cabins are well-appointed and quite spacious. On the ships operating in Western Europe, the upper-deck staterooms have true balconies, while the lower decks feature large windows. Generally, Grand Circle's Europe-based ships have twin beds only. Shipboard bathrooms are excellently fitted out, and rooms are kept spotless. CNN, movies, alternative music, and language channels are available, along with line's onboard info channel.

Dining is also professionally handled. Depending on the ship, there is a mix of a buffet (breakfast and lunch) and served (dinner). Though menu options vary, regional and local specialties are always included. Specialty evenings are also offered - for example, an Egyptian buffet - depending on the itinerary.

General entertainment is casual and low-key. Nobody goes on a cruise by Grand Circle for bingo or karaoke, though both may be offered. Sometimes there may be a costume night, black-and-white dress evening, or passenger talent show.

The real focus of any voyage by Grand Circle Cruise Line is the chance to experience other histories, traditions, cultures, and people. Through excursions ashore and onboard lectures, meals and talks with local people, demonstrations by or visits with local artisans, passengers truly have the chance to expand their understanding and knowledge of other places.

Itinerary of Grand Circle Cruise Line

Currently, Grand Circle Cruise Line's fleet includes the following vessels:

  • MV Clio (Tere Moana)
  • MV Athena (currently CMV Astoria - CMV charter)
  • MV Artania (Phoenix Reisen charter)
  • MS Provence barge
  • MS River Anuket

Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our River Cruises hub. All river passenger shipping line companies and their fleets are listed there.

Grand Circle cruises to Cuba

Grand Circle Cruise Line offers Cuba cruises on the MV Clio ship (former Tere Moana). The itineraries are 11-nights in length, leaving one-way from Miami Florida to Havana , or the reverse from Havana to Miami. The sailing part is 7 days, visiting the Cuban ports of call Caibarien, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Remedios, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad. Passengers will disembark in port Cienfuegos and will be transported overland to the capital Havana (with included 3-night hotel stay there). Then cruise passengers fly back to the USA. The reverse 11-night itinerary starts in Havana and ends in Miami.

  • Grand Circle Cruise Line's Cuba cruise prices start at USD 6,800 pp. fares are inclusive of visas, accommodations, meals, guided land tours, gratuities, port fees, airfare (Miami-Havana, or Havana-Miami), also of airport transfers in Miami.
  • The 89-passenger MV Clio (formerly known as Tere Moana) was acquired in 2015 from Paul Gauguin Cruises. Grand Circle invested over USD 5 million in the following refurbishment. The vessel entered into service in May 2016.

The list of passenger shipping lines offering cruises to Cuba included:

  • Carnival Paradise leaving from Tampa Florida - cheapest prices (from USD 480 pp)
  • Royal Caribbean (ship Empress of the Seas , leaving from Miami Florida)
  • Holland America (ship Veendam ) leaving from Fort Lauderdale since December 2017
  • MSC Cruises (ship MSC Opera , leaving from Havana)
  • Oceania Cruises (ships Marina and Regatta ) starting in 2017, Cuba circumnavigation, stops in Cienfuegos and Havana, also part of some Panama Canal transition itineraries.
  • NCL (ship Norwegian Sky , 4-day itineraries with Havana overnights - starting May 2017
  • Azamara Cruises (ship on Azamara Quest from Miami)
  • Thomson UK / Marella Cruises (ship Marella Dream ) 7-day, leaving roundtrip from Jamaica (Montego Bay) to Havana
  • Ponant Cruises (superyacht Le Ponant , leaving from Miami Florida)
  • Pearl Seas Cruises (ship Pearl Mist , leaving from Fort Lauderdale Florida)
  • Lindblad Expeditions (chartered sailing ship MS Panorama II, leaving from Havana)
  • Celestyal Cruises (ship Celestyal Crystal , leaving from Havana and Montego Bay Jamaica)
  • International Expeditions (leaving from Havana, charter flights out of Miami)
  • Victory Cruise Lines - MS Victory I - fly-cruises from Miami to Havana (home-port Cienfuegos /departures)

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government for allowing ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.

How does our Ticket Pricing work?

Circle Line uses a dynamic pricing approach to setting ticket prices. What does this mean? It means that you will find our tickets priced lower during times with less demand, like Monday through Thursday and during the colder months of October through February. We do this because our boats have a limited capacity. We weren't the first to come up with this idea: this comes from airlines and hotels.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

No, but a reserved Ticket guarantees your seat on board. Bypass the box office line and go straight to the security line to enter our Pier area. We are not able to accept reservations from Attraction Pass partners, except via CityPass.

Pier 83: The CityPASS for the Liberty Midtown Cruise and the Landmarks Cruise must be redeemed directly on the CityPASS app, my.citypass.com/product/new-york . For the Best of NYC Cruise and the Harbor Lights, please visit citypass.circleline.com .

The C3 and C-All passes for the Liberty Midtown Cruise must be redeemed directly on the CityPASS app, my.citypass.com/product/new-york . For the Landmarks Cruise, the Best of NYC Cruise and the Harbor Lights, please visit citypass.circleline.com.

CityPASS guests may upgrade to Premier on site when available. Premier seating is not available for upgrade in advance with the CityPASS.

Pier 16 The CityPASS for the Liberty Super Express must be redeemed in person at Pier 16, located at 89 South Street. We recommend arriving 45 minutes prior to the chosen departure. The pass cannot be redeemed online in advance.

What is Premier?
