Clutch are a hard rocking five-piece from Maryland, US, blending Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin guitar riffs with funk grooves and Faith No More influenced vocals.

Formed in 1991 by Neil Fallon (vocals), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass) and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums), the band quickly gathered a strong local following through relentless gigging in their hometown of Germantown, Maryland, US. With this strong local presence, they were hot property for record labels, gaining a contract with EastWest records after impressing with their debut single, “Passive Restraints” on Earache.

In 1993, Clutch released their debut full-length, “Transnational Speedway League,” helping to grow their cult following before finding their first taste of mainstream exposure with their self-titled sophomore release in 1995. Moving to Columbia Records, two further releases, 1998’s “The Elephant Riders” and 1999’s “Jam Room” continued to raise the band’s profile.

It was with 2004’s “Blast Tyrant,” on DRT Records, that Clutch gained significant radio airplay and branched out from their cult status, bolstered by the Bam Magera directed video for the single, “The Mob Goes Wild.” ‘Robot Hive/Exodus” in 2005 brought in the talents of organist Mike Schauer, helping to expand their sound. 2007’s “From Beale Street to Oblivion” also displayed a change in the band’s sound, displaying an element of influence from producer Joe Barresi, who had previously worked with Kyuss and Melvins.

A reissue of 2004’s “Blast Tyrant” brought Clutch more commercial success, still proving its relevance seven years after its initial release. Their tenth album, “Earth Rocker” appeared in 2013, peaking at number 15 on the Billboard 200, giving the band their highest chart position of their career at that time. National and European tours followed, proving that Clutch were still pulling out the goods, over 20 years after the band had begun.

Live reviews

Cluth is a band that is able to cover many diverse styles. They can tear up the place with their heavy metal music, or they can get you hooked on their funky-blues style. Whatever kind of music Clutch tries to mix together they end up doing a fantastic job and their live performances hit you with a punch. Lead singer, Neil Fallon, has a really interesting presence as the front man of the band. He often sings in a howling voice that is reminiscent to the blues legend, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and at other times he sings in a swamp rock kind of style that seems similar to John Fogerty with a deeper voice. The guitar player, Tim Sult, uses much vibrato on his distorted guitar that produces an unstable resonance that has a bluesy psychedelic sound. He also produces deep, fuzzy, sludgy sounds with his guitar creating a vibe that is similar to the stoner rock genre. The drums are often played at a slow, steady pace, but they are loud and deep with the drummer banging on the floor tom and bass drum.

Neil Fallon is very enthusiastic about his music when he performs. When he is not playing guitar he is strutting around stage with his microphone and making hand gestures as he is passionately belting out his lyrics. The crowd loves every bit of the performance, rocking their heads back and forth to the music, and occasionally starting up mosh pits to the more heavy songs. Their stage props are very engaging with bright colorful lights flashing over the stage creating a unique atmosphere. Clutch’s setlist is long and diverse. The audience is sure to hear all the hits they have come to hear as well as some deep cuts.

When going to a Clutch concert you can be sure that you will be fully invigorated by their intense performance and energetic delivery. All of the crowd will be sure to go insane when they perform the hard-hitting song, “Electric Worry”.

As usual Clutch killed it!

It was a little bit of a slow start because the crowd was not super active, but I'm going to chalk that up to the House of Blues changing a lot over the last ten years.

There's an absolute ban on mosh pits which make the crowd pretty nervous to dance around or move at all for fear of being thrown out. After a while few in the crowd tested it and found the venue accepted level of tolerated activity and the crowd AND band heated up a bit.

It was nice to see Clutch crush such a good show in spite of the limits on the energy they were getting from the crowd.

The only other thing that bummed me out was that it seemed just short of full blown mayhem. Once I saw the decibel meter in the sound booth I realized why the sound was a little lower than I was used to at a Clutch show.

None of this ruined the show, but to be honest, if I can see Clutch at a different venue again in the future I'll just go somewhere else.

House of Blues is not nearly as rad for shows now as it was in the 90's.

Interesting show. Hadn't seen them before but I dig their music. The lead singer and the drummer were very animated and full of energy, which kept me interested. However, the guitarist and bassist behaved in a way that made me feel they were just stand in studio musicians that were brought on tour out of necessity. They really didn't add much to the show and might as well have been standing of to the side of the stage. Hey but who am I to criticize. Just my opinion of what I saw. I'd definitely see them again but I think their show is better suited for a smaller more intimate venue.

Sound was great and the show was fun. Red Rocks is a fantastic place to see a show. Just don't expect a pit for the harder shows, there isn't one. The amphitheater offers great views of the show from any seat position. Closer seats are still better and with a general admission section reserved in the first 25 rows you definitely get rewarded with a great seat if you show up earlier.

The show opened with The Wexford School of Rock kids who were fantastic. They covered 4 or 5 popular metal songs including one of Clutch's in which Neil Fallon came out to help them sing.

Next came Kyng, a metal band out of L.A.. I was not familiar with the band, but they were clearly a very tight 3 piece. Their music was good and sound.

Zakk Wylde's cover band, Zakk Sabbath, followed up Kyng. If you enjoy Sabbath, and I love Sabbath, then you should definitely see this group before they return to their normal jobs.

If you've never seen Clutch. This is one of the great acts of this generation, both studio and live. Their music appeals to all types of rock and metal fans, and it is all well comprised. I've seen them twice and I will see them every time they come around.

Well last night show was one of the best I've seen in a very long time, it's nice to actually see a showman like Zack Wylde perform and melt your face off as my buddy Daniel would say. He showed us how it was done last night, even got an up close (meaning he was standing 3' from us) solo from the crowd during Warpigs.

Then Clutch comes like the powerhouse that they are and blew the roof off the place. Total energy from start to finish.

But I will not forget to mention Kyng either, a great band from the LA metal scene. Opened the show in fine fashion with some heavy riffs, phenomenal vocals, and a true sense of how to get a crowd going. If you have a chance to catch this tour, I HIGHLY recommend you do!!!!!

Great as always. Great music, great texts and atmosphere. The only complain I can have is a quality of the sound, it appears to me that the last time they were in essigfabrik the sound was better. This time due to the dense crowd I was standing further from the stage so maybe it is just my perception. Neil Fallon was throwing himself from one side of the stage to the other even more than usual and generally he appears to be in a good shape. That is a nice surprise knowing that they have to cancel some tour dates recently due to his health problems. In the era of pitch correcting software and other trickery this band sounds much better live than on any record. If you have not seen them live it is your own fault!

Great band live, superb riffs and not bad interaction with the fans.

The downside was too much bass for most of the gig. All you could hear on the floor was this low sound with guitar hardly getting through. Vocals are great but again a bit muffled by bass.

Pretty active mosh which was a great bonus.

Planet of Zeus (support) were amazing. Great with the audience, very tight crew, good tunes. Highly recommend them to anyone. Big plus of the night.

Tijuana Bibles (local band which went in first) were ok but I think the psychedelic songs and the singer clearly intoxicated they did not hit the spot at that particular part of the night. Maybe later, after a few they would have sounded a bit better? :)

Clutch was amazing as always. They are professional rock and rollers and it shows every time they take the stage. The crowd loved them as always. Very high energy, everyone taking care of each other in the pit, no fights that I saw. All around an amazing experience. I see Clutch perform 3-4 times a year, and while the set lists have become somewhat the same, they never dissapoint. I would like to see them break things up a bit more and give us some deep cuts like they did back in the day, but all in all a great concert. I'd go see them, tonight, right now, only 24 hours later and I'd be just as stoaked!

glen-foy’s profile image

Clutch is my favorite stoner rock band. They never disappoint. It was great to see them as the headliner as they played stuff that I haven't heard them play before when they were the support group. The only issue was a group of ten or twelve people who felt that half of the hall was for them only and slammed dance or just were general assholes. I mean slam dancing for Clutch makes no sense.

I love Clutch and you can tell that they love their fans and love is returned. Please come to the Bay Area as often as possible.

Great show. Sound quality at venue was great considering it was an old stripe mall(good balance vocals/guitar/drums lacking on bass, no feed back or cutout). Setlist was new songs from psychic warfare but they did a good mix of older. Even a few from name sake album...spacegrass(guest guitar Pepper from COC) and the house that peterbilt. Surprise guest band Valkyrie...that was a bonus! they rocked. Corrosion of Conformity killed it. Nailed there setlist...crowd represented. Clutch has perfected there craft. Most see tour.

The Clutch Pro Tour - The New UK Golf Tour For Male and Female Pros

The Clutch Pro Tour may offer the career-boost than many professionals are looking for this year

Whilst many pro golfers in the UK may be struggling during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Clutch Pro Tour is offering the chance to fast-track their careers.

The ambitious new tour - which is the brainchild of golf professional, Tom Hayward - is based in the UK and is open to both male and female players.

It offers huge incentives, such as a £10,000 first prize for a 'Major', plus the top three players at the end of the season will have their European Tour Qualifying School fees covered.

"I just thought there should be more opportunities out there for players where they can go and win something substantial," says Hayward, who struggled to find somewhere to compete after missing out at Qualifying School in 2018.

"For mini tour players, sponsorship is hard to come by. We’re just trying to offer a really exciting and interesting platform for players with genuine opportunities for development."

Subscribe to the Golf Monthly newsletter to stay up to date with all the latest tour news, equipment news, reviews, head-to-heads and buyer’s guides from our team of experienced experts.

The new 2020 schedule boasts £200,000 in prize money and the tour has received backing from Modest! Golf management as well as Cobra Puma Golf, who will be running its own Order of Merit.

Modest! Golf is co-owned by Niall Horan, and it manages the likes of Tyrrell Hatton , Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Guido Migliozzi.

"We are always very passionate about providing opportunities for young players as they start out on their journey," says Modest! Golf's Mark McDonnell.

"You win one of these events for £10,000 and that can pay for a lot of the travel costs for the first six, seven months of the season for these younger guys who have limited schedules. It's life changing for them."

The Clutch Pro Tour will visit some of England's finest inland courses, with the next Major taking place later this month at the stunning Notts Golf Club.

The 18-hole tournaments have already attracted a number of top professionals, including European Tour stars, such as Matthew Southgate and Steven Brown.

In July, 'The Open Access Masters' at Sunningdale Heath will unite the stars of the European and Ladies European Tours in a split field boasting equal prize money.

The field gets stronger by the day, with four-time Major winner Dame Laura Davies, LET star Meghan MacLaren and the highly-rated Connor Syme already confirmed.

This year's overall champion will receive full status for the 2020/2021 MENA Tour (Middle East North Africa), which is an Official World Golf Ranking-sanctioned tour that is an official feeder tour to the Challenge Tour.

In addition, the 2020 Clutch Pro Tour winner will receive a year's Mizuno sponsorship, featuring a full bag of equipment: driver, metal woods, a full set of irons and wedges, a season’s worth of balls and gloves, two pairs of shoes, a Tour Bag and clothing from Mizuno’s range of performance apparel.

Clutch announce UK tour and give album update

Clutch will return to the UK for 5 shows in December - as frontman Neil Fallon confirms they’ve completed work on Psychic Warfare follow-up

Clutch

Clutch have announced that they’ll return to the UK in December for five shows.

Vocalist Neil Fallon, guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines and drummer Jean-Paul Gaster will play the gigs in support of their as-yet-untitled 12 album – the follow-up to 2015’s Psychic Warfare .

Fallon has also checked in with a studio update and says: “We wrapped up recording the latest record a couple of weeks ago in Nashville with Vance Powell.

“We are really, really pleased with it. No title yet… still trying to figure that out. It’s kinda like naming a kid.”

He adds: “We’ve known about this UK tour for some time now and it’s nice to finally let the cat out of the bag. If all goes as planned, the album will have been out a few months by the time we return to the UK and bust out the new jams… and have proper holiday roasts.”

Clutch UK tour tickets are on sale now – here’s everything you need to know about buying tickets .
