Find uncommon ground at Costa Rica's 5 best coffee tours
Jan 23, 2020 • 3 min read
Costa Rica's mountainous terrain makes it ideal for coffee production © OliverJW / Getty Images
For Costa Ricans, coffee is more than just a caffeine kick. The coffee bean is nicknamed grano de oro — the golden grain — in part because of how the industry has shaped the entire country’s development. As one of the world's top exporters, you won't find a better cup of coffee anywhere else. Even Pope Francis is a fan, calling Costa Rica's brew "the world's best coffee."
So if there's one truly authentic Costa Rican experience to have, it's a trip to a coffee farm. Here are the best five coffee tours to take.
The Costa Rica coffee tour experience
To truly understand Costa Rica's connection to the popular brew, a coffee tour is an excellent place to start. A traditional tour will begin with the history of coffee worldwide before guiding visitors through a farm to follow the process from seed to bean to cup.
Coffee is grown in mountainous regions across Costa Rica. Whether you arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (near San José ) or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (in Liberia ), you can be on a coffee farm within 30 minutes.
The best coffee-growing regions feature high altitude and volcanic soils that create an ideal climate for the plants. In Costa Rica, those conditions aren’t hard to find.
Naranjo, a historic village in the Central Valley , has been producing coffee for more than 150 years. There are cafetales (coffee farms) in mountainous towns and regions such as Tarrazú, Tres Ríos, Orosí, Brunca and Turrialba. Each region will claim that their coffee is the best in Costa Rica, but it really all comes down to personal preference.
By law, virtually all coffee grown in Costa Rica is arabica, meaning it comes from the Coffea arabica plant first found in the Middle East.
Regardless of where in the country the plants are grown, when coffee berries are ripe, they’re harvested by hand.
The milled beans are bagged and exported. If the coffee is staying in Costa Rica, they’ll be toasted and packaged for sale. And if the beans have been processed as part of your tour, the guide might roast, grind and brew the freshest cup of coffee you’ve ever had.
Choosing a Costa Rica coffee tour
Much like a craft brewery tour, you’ll find that most coffee farmers in Costa Rica follow many of the same steps. What matters, then, is what region of Costa Rica you’re visiting and what type of tour interests you.
Coffee tours in Costa Rica’s Central Valley
The world’s best-known coffee company – Starbucks – runs Hacienda Alsacia , which is located just 30 minutes from the San José airport. In addition to the small-batch coffee they grow, Hacienda Alsacia is also researching climate- and disease-resistant variants. The 1.5-hour tour runs daily from 8am - 4pm with prices starting at US$30 for adults.
In the nearby city of Heredia (within 20 minutes of the airport) is Café Britt , the best-known brand of gourmet Costa Rican coffee. They’ve offered tours since 1991 and make the coffee found at upscale restaurants and gift shops across the country. Café Britt offers a variety of tours ranging from a 1.5-hour coffee-lovers tour (starting at US$26) to a six-hour coffee and adventure tour ($123).
Coffee tours in Monteverde/La Fortuna
Nestled in the mountain town of Monteverde , Don Juan offers a three-in-one tour that focuses on coffee but also highlights chocolate’s indigenous history and sugarcane production. Tours run daily at 8am, 10am, 1pm and 3pm and are fully accessible.
Across Lake Arenal, in La Fortuna , North Fields Cafe provides a similar experience in the shadow of Arenal Volcano. Daily tours run from 8am-4pm.
Coffee tours in Guanacaste
Guanacaste’s climate is better-suited for sugarcane, but the Tío Leo Coffee Tour — minutes away from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport — is a worthy stop on your way to (or from) the Nicoya Peninsula ’s beautiful beaches. Morning tours run daily from 8am -11. Tickets are $25 per person.
Few activities will combine as much history and culture — not to mention flavor — into a single, quintessentially Costa Rican experience.

‘‘Excellent tour where they show from the seed to the final product, with a super friendly guide named Axel and with a lot of knowledge in the area, I loved the cocoa fruit and we were able to see the different procedures of both products, very pleased and I would completely recommend it’’
‘‘We loved this tour. We have been able to see the entire process of making chocolate and coffee. We have been able to try different chocolates and coffees, we have learned many things… and we left this tour delighted… many thanks to our guide Justin who has transmitted his knowledge to us and has learned many things with great passion. If you pass through Arenal you can’t miss it… 100% recommended’’
‘‘Don’t miss this tour – our family of five joined our guide Jorge for two hours as he walked us through the process and history of chocolate and a bit about coffee. We got to experience and learn about the process and learn about Costa Rican economy We made our own chocolate bars, tried various fruits, sipped on coffee and even saw a toucan and a sloth’’
‘‘We weren’t sure what to expect. It was great. Informative, fun, and tasty. Our guide Alex was fabulous. If you love coffee, chocolate, and learning about the region Don Juan’s is a must’’
‘’Magical experience for my wife and I. We’re both huge chocolate fans and I love geeking out on coffee. We were surprised to find out not only were we on a great chocolate and coffee adventure but our guide went out of her way to step up the experience and point out the local wildlife in and around the grounds. We were able to see a massive iguana! Beautiful birds!’’
Adrián Bertolini
”Excellent option to spend some time learning about the history of coffee and cocoa (and their role in the history of Costa Rica as well). Our guide, in addition to being very friendly, demonstrated great mastery of the topics. There is also a tasting of the products, all very beautifully presented and served. Although you can opt for the coffee tour or the cocoa tour, it is really worth taking both”

FROM TRIPADVISOR
I chose this tour to specifically support small businesses. It’s a family-owned estate. They gave us plenty of fruit to sample, 90% cocoa nibs, hot chocolate made with farm-produced chocolate, and freshly harvested and roasted coffee beans. It was fun to learn about the plants.

Wonderful tour, the best value for money. I would recommend it to anyone. The fruit, the juice, and the hot chocolate were worth it, and the tour guide also had a lot of fun.

Monteverde Coffee & Chocolate Tour
With a storied history stretching back to 1779, the production of coffee in Costa Rica has become an integral part of our economy.
Spend an engaging two hours learning how Costa Rica’s largest export crop goes from a small red berry to an aromatic, roasted bean in this fun and informative excursion steeped in culture and Old World charm.
Following friendly pickup from your local hotel or lodge, you will travel through beautiful mountain vistas on route to a small plantation in the outskirts of Santa Elena, Monteverde.
Since you will be invited to join in the process of coffee production from start to finish during your tour, make sure to dress accordingly.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, bug repellant and either tennis shoes or hiking boots.
Make sure to bring a camera, your rain gear, and your appetite for rich coffee and delicious chocolate!
A Treasure in the Trees
After arriving at the farm, you will meet up with your knowledgeable, bilingual guide and head out with your group into the dense foliage of the coffee fields.
This easy, quarter-mile hike provides the perfect opportunity to learn about the production methods used in preparing Costa Rican coffee from start to finish.
Experience these techniques first-hand as you are invited to participate in each step of the process - from plucking the vibrant red berries in which the coffee beans grow, to peeling, roasting, grinding, brewing and finally, tasting them!
The rich history of the Costa Rican culture is deeply connected to the production of coffee.
During the 19th century, the Costa Rican government provided free plots of land to any farmer who agreed to grow coffee, while the revenue generated from the export of coffee funded the first Costa Rican railway system and even built the National Theater in San Jose.
Kicking back with a cup of coffee that you have had a hand in personally taking from berry to brew is a truly rewarding experience. Relax and enjoy a delicious cup before continuing on.
Chocolate, Anyone?
The next part of your tour introduces your group to the cacao bean. Harvesting pods from the trees on the farm, enjoy snacking on the delicious pulp that surrounds the beans while they are in the pod.Learn about the refinement process that transforms the cacao bean to a delicious delicacy.
Following some interesting information on the history of chocolate in Costa Rica, you will be invited to taste it! Rich in antioxidants, farm fresh and incredibly delightful, this part of the tour is sure to please.
Old World Ox Cart
After enjoying fresh chocolate and coffee, your tour rounds out with a sampling of sugar cane. Brought to the Americas by Christopher Columbus on his second expedition, sugar cane has been produced in Costa Rica ever since. Used in everything from cooking to molasses - sugarcane is even fermented to create Guaro, the national liquor of Costa Rica. Following a taste of this sweet crop, you may choose to extend your adventure with an optional ride around the farm in an ox-drawn cart.

Costa Rica is not only a major producer of coffee, I think it also makes some of the best coffee in the world in terms of flavor. So much work goes into producing these top-quality beans that seeing it for yourself is one of the best things to do in Costa Rica !
Although Monteverde may be most famous for its cloud forest , there are lots of other amazing things to do here – including taking a tour of a coffee plantation. While there are a lot of coffee tours to choose from , when we were trying to narrow it down the Don Juan coffee tour in Monteverde kept coming up again and again. It’s a well-rated tour and offers a glimpse (and a taste!) at three major exports here: coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane.
The Don Juan coffee tour is one of the most well-known, but is it worth it? Well, we’ve done plenty of coffee tours all over Costa Rica while living here, and on our many visits to Monteverde, the Don Juan coffee tour is one of our most memorable, so keep on reading to find out how it measures up to the rest!
About the Don Juan Coffee Tour in Monteverde
The Don Juan coffee tour is a 2-hour tour of a working coffee plantation in Monteverde. It’s located about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) outside of Santa Elena, which is the town where most tourists stay.
Although this is marketed as a coffee tour, the Don Juan plantation also produces chocolate and sugar cane. So don’t worry if you’re not a coffee drinker, because there’s plenty here for you to enjoy!
You’ll need to drive in a rental car or take a taxi to the coffee plantation, but it’s only a 10-minute drive. You can choose to start the tour at either 8 am, 10 am, 1 pm, or 3 pm, so it’s easy to fit into your Monteverde itinerary.
Once your tour starts, your guide will take you around the farm and teach you how the coffee, sugar cane, and cacao beans are grown and produced. These products are shipped all over the world, so it’s pretty cool to see where it all begins. It’s also a really interactive tour and you get to help your guide with demonstrations as you tour the farm.
And of course, you’ll also get to taste the coffee and chocolate that’s made right here on the plantation for a true bean-to-cup (or bean-to-bar) experience! I know it will come as no surprise that this was my favorite part!
And speaking of bean-to-bar, you actually get to make your own chocolate on this tour – how cool is that? So if you’ve always dreamed of being Willy Wonka in your own chocolate factory … this is it!
The farm itself is also really beautiful so it’s nice to get to walk around and explore. The trails are paved and you walk pretty slowly, so it’s not physically demanding. In fact, it’s a nice break if you’re sore from hiking, rafting , ziplining , and all of the other adventurous activities on offer in Monteverde .
The tour is really informative and it’s a lot of fun thanks to the amazing guides! We’ve done more coffee tours than we can count at this point, but this one didn’t feel repetitive and it really stood out from other experiences we’ve had on coffee plantations.
The tour costs $52 USD which includes your guide and all the tastings, but you’ll need to organize your own transport to and from the plantation.
Pros of the Don Juan Coffee Tour in Monteverde
Knowledgeable guide
As we mentioned, the guides on the Don Juan coffee tour are super knowledgeable and make the experience very engaging. They know so much about the history of coffee, the production process, and the significance of Costa Rica’s beans in the global market. We learned so much!
Affordable tour
At $52 USD per adult, this tour is one of the most affordable experiences on offer in Monteverde. It also compares pretty favorably to the prices of other coffee tours we’ve seen and done. We really think the price is worth it because the experience is so fun and engaging.
Learn about and make chocolate
One of our favorite things about this tour was that we got to make our own chocolate. We learned so much about chocolate while we were touring the farm which was super interesting, but getting to make our own bars was even better. You learn how to grind the beans and temper the chocolate to make sure that it sets properly, and then you can eat your creation afterward – yum!
Get to help press sugar cane
Another cool interactive experience on this tour is pressing sugar cane. Raw sugar cane is pressed in order to extract the juice. The juice can then be sieved, decanted, and processed to make sugar!
Sugar cane juice is also a popular drink in many countries, and you get to try it after you help your guide press it. And, fun fact, this juice is the main component of guaro, which is Costa Rica’s national alcoholic drink.

Cons of the Don Juan Coffee Tour in Monteverde
Does not include transportation
Honestly, there is only one downside to the Don Juan coffee tour, and that’s that it does not include transportation. You need to get yourself to and from the plantation. It’s only a 10-minute drive from Santa Elena, which is where most people stay in the Monteverde region, so this is not a deal breaker.
You can easily drive yourself if you’ve rented a car in Costa Rica , or take a taxi from Santa Elena, which should cost $5-$10 USD each way. That’s not too bad if you’re in a group or traveling as a couple.
Do I recommend the Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate Tour in Monteverde?
Yes, I loved it!
We had such a great time on the Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate Tour . It was informative and fun throughout the entire experience. Our guides were absolutely captivating and they were great with kids. In fact, this experience is absolutely perfect for families because kids love getting to help with demonstrations and trying all of the sweet treats, even if they’re too young to like coffee!
This tour stands head and shoulders above the other coffee tour experiences we’ve had in Costa Rica. In fact, there’s only one other tour that could rival it, but that’s in a different part of the country! So while you’re here in Monteverde, don’t miss the chance to visit Don Juan.
Plus, when you book online with Viator , you get free cancellation, so you can secure your spot without worrying about losing money if your plans change.

Other Things to do While You’re in Monteverde
While enjoying some of the best coffee in the country is definitely a must-do, don’t forget to explore the rest of this area. There are so many fun activities in Monteverde , that you could spend your entire vacation here! These are just a few of our favorites:
- Night walk – Tours of Monteverde Cloud Forest are awesome, but there are some animals you can only see at night! Guided Night Walks in Monteverde are a great way to (safely!) explore the jungle after dark. This night tour is a small group of up to 8 and you’ll have a naturalist guide to help you spot all the nocturnal creatures. It’s also super affordable at only $33 USD including round-trip transport.
- Go ziplining – Ziplining is easily a top adventure activity in Monteverde. This ziplining tour has it all ! It’s three hours of fun including the Superman zipline, which is the longest and highest zipline in Costa Rica and all of Latin America!
- Selvatura Park – Selvatura Park is a nature and adventure park located inside a protected rainforest. This park has a network of hanging bridges above the tree canopy that give you incredible aerial views of the rainforest. Explore all the bridges and the surrounding trail with the Selvatura Park Hanging Bridge Tour . This gives you two hours to enjoy the forest from unique viewpoints.
- Go bungy jumping – Bungy jumping is one of the fun Monteverde attractions you have to try … if you’re brave enough! The Extreme Bungee Jumping in Monteverde Tour has a daring jump from over 460 feet (140 meters). That’s the highest in Costa Rica and all of Central America!
- Horseback riding – This is a great way to give your feet a break and explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest! This Monteverde Cloud Forest horseback riding tour lets you cover a lot of ground as you trek through farmland and the surrounding landscape in Monteverde. Keep an eye out for toucans, parrots, monkeys, and other critters as you experience the rural side of Costa Rica, far from any crowds or traffic.
Where to Stay in Monteverde, Costa Rica
Monteverde may be a small tourist town but there are a surprisingly large amount of great hotels in all budget ranges.
Selina Monteverde – $
If you’re a budget traveler or backpacker, there are lots of nice hostels in Monteverde. If you like modern features and outstanding facilities, Selina Monteverde is the best option. The hostel is beautiful, has great reviews, and lots of activities including yoga.
The only downside is Selina is a high-end backpacker hostel. Prices begin at $97 USD for a one-night stay. You can book Selina on Booking.com or here on Hostelworld .
Camino Verde B&B Monteverde – $$
For those well past their backpacking days who can spend a little more, I love Camino Verde B&B Monteverde Costa Rica . This boutique hotel has beautiful rooms, a deck with magnificent views, and includes breakfast. It’s a comfortable hotel that comes at a great price.
Rates begin at $176 USD/night. You can check availability and book a room online here .
Chira Glamping Monteverde – $$$
If you’re a luxury traveler I highly suggest choosing what we call a “destination hotel”. These hotels are an attraction in themselves because of the unique experience they offer. In Monteverde one of the best is Chira Glamping Monteverde which offers luxury camping with the option to have your own private hottub surrounded by nature.
The view from the property is incredible! Rates begin at $375 USD/night. You can check availability and reserve a room on Booking.com .
Getting Around Costa Rica
How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.
Renting a Car
Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.
One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.
Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.
Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.
You can browse cars on Discover Cars here .
Book Shuttles
If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.
Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)
To get the best price, use the website Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!
You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.
Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!
The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!
It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.
If you’re considering taking the Don Juan coffee tour in Monteverde , I hope we’ve helped convince you it’s worth doing! I’m still thinking about that amazing coffee and chocolate we had on our tour. It was really cool to see the whole process that goes into making the products and our guides were so amazing at explaining everything and making it fun too.

La Mona Golosa: An Artisanal Chocolate Tour Near Jaco
- Jenn and Matt
- Activities , Family Travel
Most visitors to the Jaco area head to the beach for sun or surf. But for those interested in experiencing a taste of the culture, there’s a wonderful chocolate tour nearby. La Mona Golosa is a little-known cacao farm in the countryside outside Jaco. Our family recently visited and got to experience the tour and check out the property. In this post, we’ll tell you all about it and how you can plan a visit too.
La Mona Golosa is a working cacao farm about 35 minutes from Jaco, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the main strip.
The vast farm is near the small community of Quebrada Amarilla. Surrounded by a mix of open fields, farmland, and forest, La Mona Golosa will show you a side of Costa Rica you can’t experience just staying in downtown Jaco. The setting is peaceful and serene, with thick rainforest all around and little development.
About the Farm
La Mona Golosa started as a regular farm. Much of the land was used for pasture for cows, which is typical of many farms in Costa Rica.
In 2008, an Italian family purchased the property. They wanted a way to eat healthy chocolate without chemicals or artificial additives like you find in commercial chocolate. So they soon started transitioning the land for sustainable cacao production.
Little by little, they grew the plantation. Today, La Mona Golosa has over 7,000 native cacao plants spread out over 13 hectares (32 acres).
Even with so many plants, their cacao production isn’t very high.
Interestingly, this is because of monkeys!
They estimate that monkeys take about 40% of their crop each year to eat. They have tried many different things to keep the monkeys away, but nothing has worked well. So they have resorted to just planting more cacao.
The name of the farm, La Mona Golosa, fittingly translates to “The Greedy Monkey.”
La Mona Golosa Chocolate Tour
Maya house and cacao ceremony.
Our tour began with meeting our friendly guide, Diego, a local from the Jaco area. He started with a quick explanation about the farm then led us down a path beside the cacao fields.
Soon we came upon a large thatched-roof structure. Diego told us this was a replica of a traditional indigenous house.
Indigenous people in Costa Rica lived in structures similar to this. Although the building was almost completely closed up, it was cool compared to the hot weather outside. Diego explained that this was due to the tall ceilings, a clever design used to let the heat escape.
Diego began explaining about the significance of cacao to indigenous people. He invited us to take part in a cacao ceremony.
We each took a small cup filled with hot water and pure cacao. They had also mixed in some salt, honey, and a bit of chili to make it more palatable. The salt and chili were added to take away the bitterness of the pure chocolate. This “Drink of the Gods” was actually quite tasty, though our two young boys weren’t so sure.
Diego went on to explain that this sacred drink was only served to royalty in indigenous times. It was said to connect their souls to the universe and nature.
Walking the Cacao Fields
After the cacao ceremony, we followed Diego into the fields. We explored only a small patch of the farm compared to the vast land we had seen from the road.
Diego showed us a cacao pod and helped us understand how long it takes for a cacao plant to produce a mature pod.
Astoundingly, we learned that it took 3-3.5 years from baby tree to flower.
Finding a small yellow flower, the guide then showed us the tiny baby fruit inside. It was barely visible with the naked eye.
From flower to ripe fruit would take an additional 8-9 months, about the same amount of time as a human pregnancy.
Diego then invited our son to help open a pod. After hitting it a few times against a rock, the pod cracked open, revealing the rows of large white seeds inside.
Most people don’t realize it but cacao straight from the pod tastes like fruit. Each seed has a slimy white covering that you can suck off and eat. The favor is similar to pineapple or banana, and is very sweet (hence why the monkeys like it). Diego invited each of us to try it.
Fermentation and Drying
From the cacao fields, we visited the fermentation room.
After the cacao seeds are removed from the pods, they are brought to this dark building where they sit covered in wooden containers to let the natural sugars ferment. This process helps elevate the nutrients in the chocolate.
In 5-7 days, the seeds turn brown. They are then dried naturally in the sun for another 5-7 days, or longer if it is rainy. This is the stage where they get that familiar color and start to look like chocolate.
Roasting and Grinding
Once dried, Diego told us that the seeds are roasted and ground with modern machines. We weren’t able to go into the room where the family does these final steps but observed it from the outside.
We were, however, able to do our own roasting demonstration.
Diego again invited our son to help make chocolate. He poured some of the dried, raw cacao seeds into a hot pan and asked him to stir. After several minutes, we could all smell that they were ready. It smelled like chocolate cake or brownies cooking!
With the beans roasted, we removed the thin, hard shells with our hands.
Using an old-fashioned grinder, our kids then turned the nibs into a fine paste.
Tasting the Chocolate
With our raw 100% cacao ready, we were invited to add sugar, honey, and other spices and flavors to make our own creations. Some of our favorite combinations were salt and honey and vanilla and honey.
The taste of the chocolate was really amazing – dark and rich. After having just a couple of teaspoons, we were satisfied.
The Chocolate Cave
During the tour, we also got to visit the cave.
This is a stone structure that houses all the delicious chocolate that you can take home. They had different combinations with milk chocolate, 80% dark chocolate (with a little sugar), and even 100% pure dark chocolate (with no sugar added) for the serious chocolate lovers out there.
Trail and Monkeys
After the tour, you can check out the short trail behind the property. This goes around a natural lagoon that has caimen (small crocodile). We weren’t able to spot a caimen but did see a troop of white-faced monkeys and also some Scarlet Macaw parrots flying by. Though less common, spider monkeys also come through the property.

Directions to La Mona Golosa Chocolate Farm
The farm is in the town of Montelimar de Turrubares about 13 km (8 miles) off Highway 34.
From Jaco, head south along the coastal highway. A few miles after Playa Hermosa, you’ll pass a village with some houses and small grocery stores. Shortly after that, look for a turnoff on the left for a paved road. There will be signs for La Mona Golosa Chocolate Farm, Ocean Ranch Park, and Royal Butterflies.
This road is paved at times and dirt at others but is in good condition (no need for a 4×4 vehicle). Follow the curvy, narrow road along the river through the town of Mata Platano. In about 15-20 minutes, you will come to the entrance for La Mona Golosa. This is marked with a giant cacao pod statue and a big sign.

Small Town, Big Adventures: Things to Do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica
La Fortuna is a popular town in Costa Rica, receiving over a million visitors from around the world each year. Travelers are lured by the hot springs, but it is best known for its jungle adventures and the nearby Arenal Volcano National Park.
If you are an adventurous, thrill-seeking traveler, you can find a variety of unique and fun things to do in La Fortuna. Raft down the white waters of the Balsa River or hike among the volcanic rock of Arenal. You can also find more gentle approaches to submerging yourself into the exotic rainforest of Central America and having encounters with the animals that make it their home.
Here are the ten great things to do in La Fortuna: activities that give an adrenaline rush and calm but exciting outings. Find which one you’d like to add to your next La Fortuna, Costa Rica trip .

Canyoning in the Jungles of La Fortuna
Perfect for those seeking a unique adventure, canyoning screams “Costa Rica.” Many canyoning tours will pick you up, drive you to a waterfall, and teach you how to descend the rock amidst the rushing water.
This activity is a straight-up jungle adventure, giving you an experience of a lifetime. You’ll begin on a mini waterfall and work to a larger one, allowing you to feel confident.
Feel the rush of water coming down while you descend into a jungle. This is an incredible Costa Rica experience in La Fortuna.
Rafting on the Balsa River
Another great adventure in La Fortuna is heading to the waters of the Balsa River. Try beginner rapids (classes 2 and 3) or intermediate/advanced rapids (classes 3 and 4) on the Upper Balsa River.
As a bonus, many tour companies combine rafting with lunch after your adventure. Thrill seekers will love hitting the rapids, relaxing for a swim, and getting a taste of Costa Rica.
Hiking Arenal Volcano National Park
Just a short drive away from the town of La Fortuna is Arenal Volcano National Park. This is one of the main highlights of visiting Costa Rica, and the volcano is featured in many marketing materials for tourists. So it may look familiar when you get there.
Arenal Volcano is a beautiful site, and sometimes the smoke coming out of the top can be seen. But the volcano hasn’t erupted in more than a decade, and experts think it’ll be a while until it does again.
In the meantime, you can enjoy hiking through this gorgeous, green, dense park to enjoy views of the volcano and lake beyond. Many hikes at Arenal Volcano National Park are around a mile or less. Though short, they take you through the beautiful jungle and lava fields to witness the volcanic marvel. There is a per-person fee to enter the national park, which you can pay at the entrance.
Zip Lining Through the Jungle
When people think about going to Costa Rica, the first thing they often picture is zip-lining through the canopy of the jungle, surrounded by monkeys, sloths, and other rainforest animals.
There are many zip line adventures to choose from in La Fortuna, each allowing you to soar through the trees in the safety of a steel cable and harness. You’ll soar past waterfalls, through jungles, across canyons, and enjoy unique views of Arenal Volcano up high.
Coffee and Chocolate Tour
Costa Rica is well known for its coffee, sugarcane, and cacao production, so most places around the country will present tour options. Taking a coffee and chocolate tour in La Fortuna is a classic activity and perfect for all ages. Learn about these resources' growing process, harvest, and end product.
Most tours include seeing the plantation, helping create a product, and tasting a bit of sugar, coffee, and chocolate.
ATV Adventure
Take a wild ride on an ATV through the hills and jungles of La Fortuna. Many tours take you near Arenal Volcano (but not quite inside the park) to give you stunning backdrops to this adrenaline-filled activity.
You’ll have plenty of time to ride and get some thrills, but also time to stop and learn about the area, the history of the Volcano, and the beneficial mud that exists because of it.
Find Sloths on Bogarin Trail
Back in 2000, a woman named Joanne Bogarin decided to try and restore a large amount of farmland in La Fortuna. With the city's continuing development, she wanted to make sure plenty of animals had a home nearby. The barren farmland is now a forest within the city limits of La Fortuna, filled with wildlife that naturally made their way to this new home.
The Bogarin Trail isn’t a hidden gem but a trendy thing to do in La Fortuna. Why do people like the Bogarin Trail? First, it’s accessible, meaning kids, strollers, and wheelchairs will all have an easy time. The guides are even trained to provide an incredible experience for those who are blind.
Second, this trail provides ample opportunities to see sloths. While arguably the best place in Costa Rica to see sloths is Manuel Antonio , the Bogarin Trail walks you through a land where you’re almost guaranteed to see one.
The land has 30 sloths but is also home to dart frogs, coatis, Toucans, and plenty of other exotic birds and wildlife. It’s a great place to experience the unique animals of Costa Rica without having to go far.
You can take a guided or a self-guided hike on the Bogarin Trail, both of which have a fee. The fee is used to preserve and protect the land for the animals.
As a bonus, you can also head to Bogarin Trail for a night walk. These night walks present a different group of exotic animals that come out once the sun is down and it’s cooler.
Explore Nearby Caves
Many don’t know about the caves within Costa Rica. Some have heard of Barra Honda National Park in the Nicoya Peninsula as the place to see caverns, but you may not be traveling in that direction.
If you are looking for caves near La Fortuna, consider a stop at the Venado Caves. These caves are one of the lesser-known, hidden gems of La Fortuna. The caves were first discovered in 1945 but didn’t really get explored until over 20 years later. Today, you can walk through the ten discovered caverns in these tall, beautiful underground rooms.
The Venado Caves are about 35 kilometers from La Fortuna. What’s cool about them is not just the fact that they are caverns but that you’ll get a lot of the Costa Rica beauty inside. Inside the caves, you’ll admire the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites and enjoy waterfalls falling into underground rivers, bats, insects, and fish. The Venado Caves also have an outdoor swimming pool to take a refreshing dip after exploring.
Kayak the Peñas Blancas
A short drive from La Fortuna provides access to the Peñas Blancas River. This is an ideal way to spot wildlife along the river. And in this case, you’ll be on the river.
There are different ways of floating down the river. Families may enjoy a river safari on a raft, but other visitors will love sitting atop the water as you leisurely paddle in a kayak.
The kayak adventure down the river will present plenty of wildlife spotting. Enjoy the monkeys that swing on the branches right about you, birds unique to Costa Rica, exotic lizards, and even crocodiles. Having a guide will make finding the best spots for seeing animals in the river's habitat easy.
SUP Lake Arenal
La Fortuna may not present both beach and jungle , but it is home to an incredible lake, giving you some calm water activity options.
Lake Arenal is a beautiful doormat to the popular Arenal Volcano. If you want a relaxing adventure, rent a stand-up paddleboard, or take a tour , and get out on the water for a day.
The mountains surrounding the lake are covered in rainforests, and you’ll have stunning views of the Arenal Volcano. This will easily become the most beautiful place you’ve ever gone paddle boarding.
Just because you’re not in the middle of a jungle doesn’t mean you won’t encounter wildlife. Watch for Blue Herons and Toucans above and Machacha and Rainbow Bass below as you enjoy the water.
Winding Down from Your Adventures
After a day of adventures in La Fortuna, get a truly local experience by stopping at one of the sodas in La Fortuna . These restaurants are delicious, affordable, and true local cuisine.
Relax sore muscles, and a tired body at the beautiful Tabacon Hot Springs. You can stay as a guest or visit on a day pass. The hot springs here are magazine-worthy, designed with beauty and relaxation in mind.
Top Things to Do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica
La Fortuna is a central hub of adventure in Costa Rica. You can stay here for a week and do something new each day. Whether you want some high-adrenaline activities like canyoning down a waterfall or something a little more gentle like strolling down the Bogarin Trail to spot wildlife, you can pack your days with endless, unique opportunities in Costa Rica.
There are many other things to do in La Fortuna, but these give you a good feel of everything it offers and some unique experiences to make your trip memorable.
