On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You'll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.

If you see a Badge of Excellence label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Cool New Orleans over a 12-month period.

The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We're always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.

In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

New orleans plantation tour scenery

Just up the river from Laura is the “Grande Dame” of the Louisiana River Road plantations, Oak Alley. Oak Alley plantation gets its name from the spectacular quarter mile tunnel of 28 oak trees that frame the driveway as you approach. Built in 1839 and facing the Mississippi River, the magnificent entrance to Oak Alley Plantation makes it a “Must See” destination on everyone’s list of historic Louisiana sites. This plantation was originally named Bon Séjour (“pleasant sojourn”), but became known as Oak Alley when riverboat passengers floating by marveled at the double row of giant oak trees leading to the mansion. Thanks to its classic appearance and beautiful restoration, Oak Alley Plantation has been featured in a number of movies and TV series, including the movie “Interview with a Vampire,” and Beyonce’s “Deja Vu” music video. Houmas House Plantation Tours

New orleans plantation tours

This historic Houmas House estate boasts 38 acres of the South’s most beautiful gardens, three restaurants, a luxurious Inn and a historic mansion open daily for tours. The guided mansion tour leads guests through the architectural evolution of the mansion and details how a succession of owners and the Mississippi River grew this manor house to today’s grand estate. Period antiques, artwork and artifacts help the costumed guides tell the story of plantation life. Once sprawling over 300,000 acres, Houmas House has survived wars, floods, abandonment, and the test of time. Spend the day or night and experience the Antebellum South. Once you have explored the Houmas Estate, visit The Great River Road Steamboat Museum. This expansive museum educates about life on the Mississippi– exploring the culture, commerce, folklore and music. Once you’ve completed this attraction, save time to walk across the bridge located in the parking lot and enjoy sweeping views of the Mississippi River and the surrounding landscape.

Read more about Houmas House Plantation here.

The Whitney Plantation stands out from other attractions by truly paying homage to the slaves responsible for its rise. Take a tour of the home itself (“The Big House”), Slave Quarters, Wall of Honor memorial, Antioch Baptist Church, and other exhibits carefully built and preserved in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the plantation. The Whitney dates back to the early 1700’s, when a German immigrant moved to Louisiana with his family and established a small farm, boasting only one pig. Thanks to indispensable slave labor, the plantation eventually grew to become quite successful, and at its peak produced over 400,000 pounds of sugar in one season. The present-day plantation serves as a memorial to the slaves who lost their lives, and the brutal labor responsible for the plantation’s success. Visitors experience a more raw, realistic view of the Old South than many other plantations offer. We invite you to explore a plantation like none other in Louisiana.

Laura Plantation Tours

New orleans plantation tours

Laura: Louisiana’s Creole Heritage Site has a rich and unique history, from the home itself to the stories of the women who ran it. As you walk through the house, banana grove, garden, and slave quarters, you’ll catch a glimpse of the plantation as it would have looked over 200 years ago, complete with furnishings of the period and photos of its original residents. Laura Plantation represents the many different cultural influences at play in Louisiana during this time period: initially the plantation was built and run by a French Creole family, and was later turned over to a German family who ran it for nearly 100 years. Stories told by a West African freedmen working on the plantation in the 1870’s, “Compair Lapin & Compair Bouki”, known in English as “Tales of Br’er Rabbit,” were recorded in the original 1840s slave cabins.

When you arrive, you can expect a 75-minute tour from a passionate, highly knowledgeable guide. Your tour will take you through the basement of Laura, and up to the living quarters as you hear about the family’s troubled past. As you walk through the house, your guide will take you on a journey through four generations of this Creole family, both free and enslaved.

After exploring the house, you’ll be guided through the mansion’s beautiful gardens and banana grove to the original slave quarters. Laura Plantation has taken great care in not only renovating the grounds, but also uncovering the true (and at times, devastating) history of the plantation’s family and slaves. You’ll hear all sides of the story, thoughtfully and respectfully recounted on this 200 year-old sugar farm.

Creole Queen vs Steamboat Natchez

The Creole Queen

There are a few small differences between the Steamboat Natchez and the Creole Queen. From an outside look, you might think they are the same, but they are not. Both are great boat rides in New Orleans with dinner options, but the boats themselves are different.

The Creole Queen is powered by a diesel-electric motor and made its maiden voyage in 1983. This motor is used to operate the paddle wheel at the back of the boat. The Natchez is a steamboat. This means that a steam engine powers the paddle wheel at the rear of the boat.

The Nanchez is one of only a few boats that is still powered by steam. The Nanchez was built in 1975 and has transported famous musicians and important political figures. You can even find a small museum aboard the Natchez.

Both the Creole Queen and the Steamboat Natchez are boats with great history and insight. The two boats have much more in common than they do in differences. You will learn a lot and can eat great food on either boat.

The differences between the two should not cause any disappointment if you happen to ride on one and not the other. No matter what New Orleans river cruise you find yourself on, you will have a blast.

Creole Queen going on a River Cruise in New Orleans

Creole Queen Parking

There is no designated parking for any of the Riverboats in New Orleans. This does not mean there is no parking; it means you will have to pay for parking at some of the paid parking or street parking options at or near the French Quarter.

We parked in the parking lot that is next to the aquarium, and it is only a short walk from there. The parking lot by the aquarium is also a great place to park if you are going to spend time after your short Mississippi River cruise.

Tips for Your Creole Queen Boat Tours in New Orleans

Band performing Jazz music during our Steamboat Natchez Boat Tour

1. Get in Line Early: We were there about 35 minutes early for our tour, and it was not early enough. There was a huge line. It is recommended to be in line 30 minutes before the scheduled boarding time. This means you should be at the boat 1 hour before departure.

2. Be in Line First: There is not enough outdoor seating for everyone. If you are at the front of the line for boarding, you will have more options for outdoor seating. If you want to hear the jazz music, you will want to grab some chairs on the top deck. There is only one band on the top deck. Some people had expectations of a band on each deck, and this is not an option. The band plays on the top deck, and the music can be heard on the lower decks from the speakers.

3. There is no outside food or drink allowed on the boat, even if you don’t have a reservation for the Creole Queen brunch, lunch, or dinner. Get the Creole Queen dinner Cruise option if it is available. It is worth it.

Mississippi River with New Orleans in the background taken from the Creole Queen

4. If you are going on the tour with kids, bring a couple of little toys to entertain them while on the river boat tour. The tour can feel a little long if you do not eat on the boat. It is a relaxing cruise, and kids don’t often like to just relax.

5. The upper deck is where most of the action is if you want to relax less. It can also be a bit more crowded. This is because the live band is on the upper deck, and they have an upper deck bar close by.

5-Star New Orleans Tour

This was such a great find on TripAdvisor. Our daughter is 5 and this tour was really geared for her but our 3.5 year old son loved it too! Jill is such a great and engaging tour guide and really knows how to connect with young kids. Our daughter repeatedly has told us that this was her favorite part of the trip to New Orleans and can't stop telling us the story of Jean Lafitte.

We had a fantastic time on this tour with my 8.5 year old grandson. Very informative and entertaining. Our guide was fabulous. I could tell she was a teacher. Very engaging with the children. Used name tags and called on each child. Had lots of props and used them while telling the history of New Orleans. Perfect length of time.

Jill was fantastic, great with kids, entertaining and very knowledgeable. Just the right amount of spookiness, history, and humor for my 7 year old twins. I planned to do another one of her tours but ran out of time on the trip. Highly recommended!

We did the music tour with Richard. We were a multigenerational group (grandparents, parents, young kids) and there was something for all of us to enjoy. We would recommend to anyone.
