Decorating Cruise Doors: A Complete Guide

Ideas & rules – everything you need to know about cruise ship door decorations.

If you’ve been on a cruise lately, you’ll likely have seen a variety of magnets, signs, or even full banners across stateroom doors. Cruise door decorations are a trend found on almost all family-friendly cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and of course Disney Cruises.

Why decorate your stateroom door + a few ideas

There are so many reasons people might choose to add a little personalization on their cabin door during a cruise vacation! Sometimes it’s as simple as quickly identifying which cabin is yours. Elaborate decorations might be used to celebrate a life event or holiday.

These are a few common reasons people participate in door decorating on a cruise ship:

It helps you to recognize your room/cabin

With the size of ships now, the chances of getting lost in finding your stateroom are pretty good! People use cruise cabin door decorations to mark their cabin and quickly identify it. Then there are those who tend to indulge too much and after an evening of breaking even on the drink package, a door magnet or small decoration will help you know when you’ve arrived — at the right cabin!

Stateroom Door decorations To celebrate a special occasion

Celebrate a birthday, anniversary, retirement, or any other special occasion with a fun door decoration on your cruise cabin. Walk through the halls of most cruise ships and you’ll see people of all ages being announced on their door!

Cruise Door Decorations to Celebrate a holiday

Christmas is a great time to take a cruise and an even better time to decorate your cabin door for the festive season! On a recent MSC Cruise on the MSC Meraviglia, we couldn’t believe the number of door decorations we saw with so many creative takes on the holidays! It was great fun!.

But don’t limit the door decorating to Christmas, we’ve seen both large and small decor for Valentines Day, easter, and especially Halloween.

You can leave messages on your cabin door

Fun + Practical, use a decorative magnet wipe board and announce to your travel mates where you’ll be. Want even more fun and live on the edge a little? Leave a dry-erase marker tied to the board and see other passengers get creative with your message board. Be warned, this is risky! 🙂

Cruise door magnets and banners.

The easiest way to add a little fun to your cruise cabin door is simply getting magnets you love. There are magnets for everything available on Amazon and Etsy, or even design your own and have them made! The ideas are endless. Additionally, this is the safest way to go when trying to adhere to cruise policies about flame-retardant materials.

Other passengers go all out with banners and foil letters that can be adhered with command strips or even double-sided magnets.

Can You Decorate Your Stateroom Door on All Cruise Lines?

While some cruise lines encourage decorating and personalizing your cabin door, others have decided to rule the practice out. Norwegian Cruise Line & Virgin Voyages explicitly prohibit door decorations (though some people still do it).

Cruise line rules about decorating cabin doors by each cruise line

Some cruise lines promote door decorating fun and sell decorations to guests, however, there are some important rules to decorating your door! Here’s a list of rules for each cruise line.

Can you decorate a cabin or stateroom door on Disney Cruise Line?

Yes, you can! Decorating a stateroom door on a Disney Cruise is a great family activity as well as a great roll call or group cruise activity!

Disney Cruise Line door decoration rules

You may not affix items to your stateroom doors using tape or any adhesive, including removable gel adhesives or command strips.  Over-the-door hanging organizers are prohibited. Light bulb strings are not permitted.

The recommended door decorations for Disney Cruises are magnetic only… but it’s important to know that not all doors are magnetic.  Concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors.

Can you decorate a cabin door on Carnival Cruise Line?

Yes! you can decorate your stateroom door, but there are rules about what’s allowed and what’s not.

Carnival cruise door decoration rules

Carnival cruise line has put out the most extensive rules about decorating your cabin door. Some people may feel like these rules are too restrictive, but the fact that Carnival actually embraces the concept as well as they do, it’s no surprise there are rules.

Rules are updated on occasion and it’s good to read the Carnival website about  decorating your stateroom door and stateroom here .

This is what Carnival allows, and doesn’t allow for cruise door decorations:

  • All decorations must be fire retardant from the factory (not sprayed with fire retardant material after the fact).
  • Only decorations on the actual door, not in the hall or on the frames & walls.
  • Magnets and command strips only – no tape.
  • Nothing is allowed on the balconies (which is no surprise)
  • Nothing can be hung to restrict airflow or lights.

Most importantly – what I see violated sometimes, is the fact people hang string lights. This is a no-no. Not even battery-powered fairy lights are allowed.

When in doubt, Carnival Cruises sells door decorations directly, but here are a few tips on Carnival Cruise Line door decorations.

Can you decorate your cruise cabin door on Princess Cruises?

Princess is not necessarily the first cruise line that would come to mind to embrace creative door decor as the clientele trends older and there are fewer children (normally). There are no rules against decorating your cabin door on a Princess Cruise, but following the general guidelines of no adhesives and using items that are fire-rated will keep you from getting in trouble with the cruise line.

Generally speaking, most passengers on Princess Cruises, should they do a door decoration, it’s usually a simple magnet to help identify a cabin or a small magnetic celebration door sign. I’ve yet to see elaborate door decor on a Princess ship the way you might on a Disney ship.

Can you decorate your door on Royal Caribbean?

Following basically the same guidelines set out by Carnival, RCCL allows door decorations as long as they’re not hazardous or stuck to the door with tape or adhesives.

Norwegian Cruise Line door decoration rules

Stateroom stewards have been instructed to remove all decorations and place them inside the room. A real bummer, right?

The reality is, while NCL published a policy against cruise decorations in 2019, there are still plenty of people who put magnets on their doors and they go ‘unnoticed’. Much more than magnets, however, will likely get the decorations removed. Just know that it’s officially against NCL rules to decorate a door, but it seems that the cabin stewards have some discretion.

The below photo was from a Norwegian ship. So while they have rules, how they are applied or adhered to will vary. Just be prepared to have your treasures removed since it’s the official policy on NCL.

Can you decorate your cabin door on Virgin Voyages?

If you ask around about door decorating on Virgin Voyages , you’ll find that most people don’t participate and some travel agents have even said it’s against Virgin policy (we can’t find it in writing, though we’ve tried to confirm). On a couple of Virgin Voyages cruises, we saw only 2 doors that had anything on them and they were simple magnets. If in doubt, contact Virgin directly, just know it’s not a common practice with this cruise brand.

Cruise Door Decorations: 125 Ideas

Find this again easily by pinning it!

And 5 reasons that decorating your cruise room door is good to do.

I just returned from another cruise and as usual, enjoyed looking at all of the cruise door decorations. It is always fun to see how people decorate their cabin room doors. You can tell that some people plan ahead and prepare banners and decorations prior to their cruise departure. Others realize the benefit of decorating their cabin room door while on board and throw something together with whatever they can get their hands on.

In this post I am going to share photographs of 125 decorated cruise cabin doors from my recent trip and five reasons it is a good idea to do it. AND – at the bottom of this post, I’ve linked up cruise door decorations you can buy on Amazon, making is super easy for you. I am an Amazon affiliate, meaning that I may make a small commission for a purchase you make, but that doesn’t change the price you pay at all.

5 reasons to decorate your cruise room door

  • It is sometimes hard to find your room when you are walking down LONG hallways where every door looks the same. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve passed my room. Having a cruise door decoration makes it easy to spot your room.
  • If you are with a group, having a cruise door decoration makes it easy to find and connect with others in your party because you’ll recognize each other’s decorations, which often include names.
  • It is Fun and Festive!
  • It is a place to share something that you are celebrating (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations) with other guests.
  • Incorporating a memo board into your cruise door decoration allows members of a larger group to leave notes for each other. Most cruise ships now have social media plans that can be purchased and used for texting, but this can work for those that don’t.

There are 125 photos shown below. As you reach the bottom, you’ll notice that many people also simply tie something onto the their “mail slot” right next to their door. I wanted to share a sampling of these too in my collection of cruise door decorations.

As you plan your cruise door decorations, please see your cruise line guidelines for adhering/hanging things in your room to avoid any charges for damage. Keep in mind that the doors are magnets, so magnets can hold your decorations up. While there are stated rules about what can be used, I see everything – scotch tape, duct tape (don’t do this one!), magnets, plastic temporary hooks, etc.

Amazon has great customizable banners that are pretty cheap.  I saw various versions of these all over the ship.  Click on the images below to check out the details about each banner.

Are you embarking on a cruise adventure soon? Amp up the excitement by adding a personal touch to your stateroom door!

Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or a proud graduation moment, cruise door decorations are a fantastic way to celebrate these milestones at sea. It’s not just about making your door look fabulous—it’s about creating memories that stick long after the cruise has docked back home.

Why Decorate Your Cruise Cabin Door?

Walking around the cruise ship, you’ll find many passengers who have taken the time to decorate their stateroom doors.

There are many reasons to decorate your cabin door, not the least of which makes it easier to find your room.

1. Show Your Personality

Your cruise stateroom door is the perfect canvas to express who you are. Think of it as the front porch of your temporary sea home.

You have a vast ocean to explore, but your door is your personal stamp.

Show off your interests , whether you’re a fan of tropical paradises, a Disney enthusiast, or love nautical themes. Your door decoration can be a fantastic icebreaker and give others a peek into your world.

2. Easy to Identify Your Room

Cute Flamingo Stateroom Door Decoration

Cruise ships are so big that it’s common for passengers to get lost on board. Even the most experienced cruisers can have difficulty locating their cabin door in the long corridor of identical staterooms.

A unique door decoration makes spotting your room a breeze . Apart from being practical for you, it’s also beneficial for others in your group. You won’t be that person awkwardly trying their key card on multiple doors before finding their own.

3. Start Conversations with Other Passengers

One popular door decoration is a magnetic whiteboard .

Attaching a magnetic whiteboard to your stateroom door is a great way to leave messages for other passengers. You can write words of wisdom, inspirational quotes , or fun jokes for fellow cruisers to read and enjoy.

A whiteboard is a great way to communicate with your travel companions while traveling in a large group. You could leave a note letting your friends and family know where they can find you or when you will return to your cabin.

4. Celebrate A Special Occasion

Cruise ships are celebration-friendly zones, and what better way to honor a special occasion than with a well-adorned door? Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or graduation , your door can reflect the joy and significance of the milestone.

Plus, other guests and crew will join in the festivities by offering their well wishes as they pass by.

4. Fun for the Kids

For little sailors, a decorated door is like a treasure map’s ‘X’ marking the spot. It’s a beacon of excitement and a signal that fun lies behind the door . It can feature their favorite characters, colors, or themes.

With every return to the room, their decorated door reminds them that this trip is an adventure made just for them.

Before your cruise, having your kids create their own door decorations is a great idea. Getting your kids to design cabin door decorations can keep them occupied for hours or days and excite them about their upcoming cruise vacation.

5. Send a Secret Message

Pineapple on a cruise ship door

Sometimes, your door decor can be more than just decoration; it can carry a secret message . Maybe it’s an inside joke among friends or the secret upside-down pineapple . The door becomes a conversation starter, a mystery for others to ponder, and a fun way for you to communicate a playful or romantic gesture.

Does Every Cruise Line Let You Decorate Your Cabin Door?

Lobster Decorations on a Stateroom Door

Door decorations on family-friendly cruise lines like Disney Cruise Line and Carnival are trendy. But you’ll find passengers decorating their cabin doors on plenty of other cruise lines.

Only one of the mainstream cruise lines has banned cabin door decorations. In August 2019, Norwegian Cruise Line banned all cruise cabin door decorations , citing fire safety concerns.

Personalized Anchor Decorations on a Cruise Ship Cabin Door

Some general rules apply to all cruise lines. They are:

  • Decorations must not leave a mark or damage doors. If they do, you may receive a fine. Avoid tape and adhesives of all types.
  • Decorations must not be offensive, vulgar, or otherwise inappropriate.
  • Decorations must not extend beyond the door. The corridors on a cruise ship are narrow, and your decorations should not block service carts or passengers.

Carnival Cruise Door Decoration Rules

According to Carnival’s website , the following rules apply for cruise cabin door decorations:

  • Decorations may consist only of fire-retardant materials. Please note that items sprayed with fire retardant spray are not acceptable.
  • Decorations may only be placed on the stateroom door, not the surrounding frame, walls, or railings.
  • You may use magnets or Command Strips but no adhesives like tape or glue.
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers must hang inside the stateroom, must also be of fire retardant material, and cannot damage the door.
  • No decorations of any kind are allowed on balconies.
  • No decorations or items may be placed over light fittings or fixtures. This may restrict the airflow and cause the item to ignite.
  • No string lights of any kind are allowed.

Disney Cruise Line Door Decorations Rule

Guests on Disney Cruise Line are encouraged to decorate their stateroom doors. According to Disney’s website , the following rules apply:

  • You are welcome to place magnetic signs on your stateroom door. Please note that Concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors.
  • You may not affix items to your stateroom doors using tape or any adhesive, including removable gel adhesives, as this can damage the doors’ finish.
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers are prohibited, as they can scratch and/or disfigure stateroom doors and trim.
  • Guests who damage doors violating these guidelines will be assessed a $100 fee per incident to cover the cost of repairs.
  • Light bulb strings are not permitted.

Royal Caribbean Door Decorating Rules

Door decorations are a common sight on Royal Caribbean cruises. Royal Caribbean encourages guests to decorate their cabin doors, even selling magnetic decorations on their website.

Royal Caribbean’s guest code of conduct  states, “Inappropriate or abusive behavior is not permitted. This includes…placing materials (including signs, banners, decorations, etc.) anywhere on the exterior of the ship, placing materials anywhere on the interior of the ship (including stateroom doors, along corridors, etc.) without the express permission of ship management or  which may be deemed by ship management as inappropriate …”

Celebrity Cruises

Door decorating isn’t as common on Celebrity Cruises. But the cruise line does allow guests to decorate cabin doors.

Celebrity Cruises guest code of conduct states , “Inappropriate or abusive behavior is not permitted. This includes…placing signs, banners, decorations, or other materials anywhere on the exterior of the ship; placing materials on stateroom doors, along corridors, or anywhere else on the interior of the ship without the express permission of ship management…”

Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Holland America Line

Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Holland America Line don’t provide specific rules for door decorating. While door decorations are allowed on these cruise lines, they’re not as common as on other cruise operators.

Norwegian Cruise Line Door Decorating Rules

In August 2019, Norwegian Cruise Line updated their policy prohibiting cruise door decorations of any kind.

The announcement stated, “As per safety requirements, stateroom door decorations are strictly prohibited. Your stateroom steward has been instructed to remove and place all decorations inside the room. Thank you for your understanding and compliance with this safety policy.”

The cruise line cited fire safety concerns as the reason for the decision. Cabin stewards are instructed to remove all decorations and place them inside the room.

Tips for Decorating Your Cruise Cabin Door

cruise ship decorations ideas

Here are some general tips for decorating your cabin door:

  • Never decorate the door frame, wall, railings, or light fixtures. Only stick door decorations on the stateroom door itself.
  • Only attach decorations using magnets or command strips to avoid damaging the door. Avoid tape and adhesives of all types.
  • Only use decorations made of flame-retardant materials.
  • Cruise lines DO NOT allow string lights on your door or in the hallway.

How to Attach Cruise Door Decorations

Fun Cruise Ship Door Decoration

Attaching cruise door decorations requires secure and non-damaging methods to the door.

Most cruise ship doors are made of metal, making magnets the perfect way to attach decorations. You can use magnetic strips or hooks to hang lightweight items. Ensure the magnets are strong enough to hold your decorations securely.

Sometimes, the doors are covered with a non-metallic finish, so you need stronger magnets.

Avoid using glue, tape, or other adhesives which can damage the door.

Editor’s Tip

If you’re on a Disney cruise, it’s essential to remember that the Concierge staterooms have a wooden veneer. The extra-thick surface requires extra-strong neodymium magnets to attach your decorations.

We’ll be sailing on the Wonder of the Seas this coming May. I love being creative and understand that I’ll be limited to decorating our cabin door. We’ll be in a ocean view, would you happen to know what the surface door is made of? Metal, wood, etc. This will help me decide what I have to bring. Thank you.

The doors are most likely be made of metal, similar to the other Oasis-class ships. You shouldn’t have any issues using magnets to hang your decorations. However, it’s impossible to know for certain as the ship hasn’t debuted yet.

P.S. I would love to hear about your experience on the new ship! Feel free to comment on our Wonder of the Seas post when you get back from your vacation and share your experience.

Traveling with magnets

If you have your magnet decorations in your luggage, cruisers suggest labeling the items in an envelope or bag with “magnets” written. As well, if you have your magnet decorations in your carry on bag at the airport, let the TSA agents know that you have magnets in your bag.

What Should You NOT Do When Decorating Your Cruise Cabin Door

Sometimes people ask if anything is off limits when it comes to decorating your cabin door. Cruise lines that allow door decoration ask that you “keep it clean”. In other words, don’t include profanity or “adult” photos on your cabin door. This is especially true if you’re on a family cruise .

What about pineapples? You may ask

I find this mildly amusing, as I like pineapple decor. However, ever since I learned of what pineapples on a door can actually mean, I cannot look at pineapples in the same way.

While I could send you to google this, I may as well explain if you haven’t heard this yet.

Pineapples on a door mat or as a door decoration are supposed to signify hospitality and welcome. However, it has more significance for those that know…

Pineapples on a door is a code that “swingers” use to let others know about their “interests”. Upside down pineapples are said to mean the couple is actively looking for more than friendship.

So, on land, and on cruises, if you see pineapples on a door, it may mean more than you know. Of course, it may just be that they like pineapple decorations or that they have friends with a sense of humor ;-).

More Useful Items to Bring on a Cruise

Here are 8 cruise essentials that many cruisers bring on each and every cruise.

I’ve included Amazon links so you can click and verify pricing and reviews of all items.

Packing cubes  – They really just make packing and unpacking easier, and nothing will make you feel more organized for your cruise (or any type travel)

Reusable luggage tags – It’s a good idea to buy luggage tag holders before you cruise. You’ll simply slip the printed luggage tags (from your cruise line) into the durable plastic sleeves and attach them to each suitcase.

Magnet hooks  – Cruise cabin walls are metal. This is why  magnet hooks  are a top recommendation by avid cruisers to add extra hooks and storage to your stateroom.

Over the door organizer –  A cruiser favorite, you can fit a lot of items in the organizer, and hang it on the bathroom door or cabin wall. This is really helpful for families cruising with kids .

Hanging toiletry bag –  this toiletry bag is a huge space saver, as it can hang on bathroom door or even magnet hooks.

Large zippered nautical stripe beach bag –  an awesome beach bag that can hold 4 big towels and everything you need on shore excursions. I use it as a cruise carry-on bag as well.

Bonine (seasickness meds)  – Make sure to bring along your favorite non drowsy motion sickness medication. Personally, I find  Bonine  to be very effective without negative side effects (for my family).

Printer Setup: Put the magnet sheets or paper for Command Strips in your printer. Make sure they're the right way up. Check your printer guide if you're unsure.

Why Decorate Your Cruise Cabin Door?

Decorating cruise doors helps guests spot their rooms when walking down the long hallways. Most doors look identical, and it is easy to get disoriented on a cruise ship the first few days.

Cruise decorations on the door helps passengers easily spot their room. This can be especially important for children or elderly passengers. Or let's face it, it also helps cruisers who enjoy their drink packages.

Having cruise door decorations are also a fun way to meet other passengers, as they are often a conversation starter.

Last, it's a chance to celebrate events like birthdays, holidays or anniversaries and give your cabin a touch of home.

Cruise Ship Door Decoration Rules by Cruise Line

While most of the rules are very similar, it is always recommended to review your cruise line's policy page on door decorations prior to purchasing decorations or cruising. Most of it is common sense, but there are some things to consider.

Similar policies across most cruise lines:

Ensure Your Cruise Door Signs and Decorations Don't Pose Hazards

While cruise cabin decorations are fun, safety always comes first. Avoid items that take up more space than the door or might cause tripping or other hazards in the surrounding space.

Being Respectful of Neighbors and Crew

Always consider your neighbors when choosing your cruise cabin door decoration. Avoid offensive or overly loud decorations that might bother your cruise cabin neighbors.

Maintenance: Checking and Adjusting Throughout the Cruise

Throughout the cruise, check your decorations. Ensure they're still secure and adjust if needed.

Ensure Decorations Do Not Damage the Door Or Leave Adhesive Residue Behind

Magnets are great for keep door decorations hung, as most cruise ship doors are made of metal, and magnets leave zero residue behind.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival cruises welcome cruise door decorations.

Some things to keep in mind on Carnival are that they prohibit items with adhesives that could harm the cruise cabin door finish, and door decorations should be in good taste and avoid offensive content.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line allows door decor and encourages you to add magic to your door.

Disney has policies that prohibit materials that might damage the door. Ensure any adhesives used are easily removed. Since most cruise ships use metal doors for cabins, magnets are a great option for door decorations.

(You can get festive magnets that add to the decorating theme.)

Holland America Line

Holland America is a bit more traditional than some cruise lines, yet modern. Holland appreciates personalized door touches that enhances or coordinates with the ship's refined ambiance.

Decorations on Holland should be very tasteful and, of course, free from materials that may potentially damage the door.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is a line with European flair. MSC favors cruise cabin door decorations that reflect its Mediterranean essence, but any non-offensive theme is welcomes.

As with all cruise lines, cruisers should ensure their decorations do not damage the door or leave adhesive residue behind.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Door decorations on the Norwegian Cruise Line should be fire-resistant.

The use of tape, adhesives, or anything that might cause damage to the door or hallway is frowned upon. Again, magnets make door decoration very easy.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is open to door decorations, provided they don't hinder access or pose risks. Decor that's deemed inappropriate or offensive will be taken down.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean invites guests to personalize their doors, with a few stipulations for safety and respect.

Decorations shouldn't damage or block the door. If the decorations include lights of any kind, the lights need to adhere to the ship's safety protocols which you can find on Royal Caribbean's web page.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages has a very modern and adult-centered vibe. Virgin allows cruisers to decorate doors as long as guidelines are followed such as prevention of door damage. Virgin encourages door decorations to align with their ship ambiance.

Additional Cruise Line Policies: Quick Notes on Decor Rules

Rules across other cruise lines likely have similarities. Before cruising, always verify the policies of your specific cruise line to understand the most current regulations.

For the safety of all, ensure door decor is made of flame retardant materials or is fire retardant.

Where to Find Cruise Door Decor:

You can find cruise door decorations on websites like Etsy and Amazon.

When you're on the cruise, some ships have stores that sell themed decorations.

You can order personalized door decorations or personalized magnets with your family's names, photos or special occasion dates from some print shops and online stores.

Top Picks for Door Decor:

Ship-Themed Magnets: Cool magnets that fit any cruise.

Family Banners: You can add your family's names or pictures.

Stickers for Different Stops: Fun stickers for each place your cruise visits.

Although these ideas contain items that you might find difficult to get in local stores. For your ease, I’ve mentioned those items and where you can buy them at affordable prices.

#1 Make Announcement Theme

cruise ship decorations ideas

There can be several reasons to cruise, and cruise door decoration is an exquisite way to express.

For example, if you are cruising on your birthday. One of the easiest ways is to use fun magnets, stating, “It’s my birthday cruise.” You can easily place these magnets on your cruise door. Let others know your uniqueness and share your good times with them.

Not only birthday celebrations – theme announcement goes the same for any special occasion you want to share with the world.

It can either be an “anniversary” or a banner covering “Will you marry me” or “just got married” to express your love for your partner. For this, you can use “couple cruise magnets.”

Cursing can be an excellent opportunity to collaborate or meet with like-minded people. And adding a personalized touch to your door decoration will help people to know more about you.

For example, if you love a particular book or a writer, you can use a hanging wal l theme stating the favorite motivational quote and name of the book.

#3 make the cruise door interactive.

Another fun way to decorate a cruise door is to make it interactive. Magnetic dry-erase boards are best in this regard.

For example, write “How many times have you cruised?” or “Which is your favorite port?”

Believe us; we were astonished to see the response of fellow guests. A lot of them responded, and we even started communicating later.

Even once, we left the board with the statement, “leave a note.” Seeing how people contributed to it by placing a short note or laughing joke was good.

Magnetic And Hanging Dry Erase Board

#4 nautical inspired theme.

Nautical themes are the most popular choice for any cruiser decorating the door.

This theme got inspiration from the Maritimes elements. The uniqueness of the nautical theme lies in its colors, which sets it apart from others.

For example, vibrant red, crisp white, and deep navy blue are nautical themes’ color patterns.

Since we have also used nautical hanging swirls for our cruise doors, many cruisers compliment and admire our doors.

WILLBOND 20 Pieces Nautical Hanging Swirl Cruise Ship Decorations

#5 use diy projects.

If you love crafting, there is no other preferable way to customize your cruise door.

One of the best things about using DIY crafts is endless opportunities. Either use beach theme items or create your wreath using sea shells – the options are never-ending so that you can make it fit up to your choice and personal style.

However, you must know that cruise lines can cost you a penalty of up to $100 if you damage their property. So, you must be careful when choosing glue or strips, as the cruise doors are metal.

#6 Hanging Pocket Organizer

A hanging pocket organizer is a multipurpose door decoration. You can place it inside or outside the room – surely it will be a space-saving idea.

Especially if you are cruising on a Disney cruise line , a hanging pocket organizer will be essential for the fish extender program.

Fish Extender Disney Cruise Fitted – Hanging Pockets

#7 string lights.

String lights also look good placed outside the door.

For this purpose, we preferred these ocean-themed string lights, which look so cute. These are remote control and versatile lights.

Cruising with kids will make it a popular choice. However, these strings can also be used as an additional gear and touch-up.

For example, you can place it around your door hanging board to make it more appealing or use it to enhance the beauty of any DIY project.

Note: Battery operated string lights are not an issue. Make sure not to bring plug-in lights.

Battery Operated String Lights

#8 cultural showcase.

A cultural showcase on a cruise is always an anticipated idea to stay unique.

For example, you can add a touch of your culture or heritage in a DIY project to show others where you are from or represent your country. With that, displaying a flag outside your cruise door is also a great idea to connect with your people.

Moreover, you can also decorate the door with different textiles or symbols representing the state or country.

#9 Personalized Magnates

Choosing magnets to decorate the doors can be overwhelming as it is one of the most popular options.

To make this popular idea unpopular or unique – you need personalized magnets.

For example, buy a blank magnet and customize it with your desired theme, color, paint, or picture. Alternatively, you can also get personalized cruise ship magnets online.

Rules for decorating cruise doors.

Different cruise lines have distinct rules regarding decorating doors. However, they all share the same purpose: ensuring the ship’s and other cruisers’ safety.

I’ve outlined the rules of various cruise lines for adorning cruise doors. Just make sure to follow them to avoid any penalties.

1- Royal Caribbean Door Decoration Rules

  • Leave No Trace:  Make sure not to damage the cruise doors while decorating. Or don’t use the materials that leave any mark on the stateroom doors. Only use magnets (or command strips for non-metallic surfaces).
  • Keep It PG-13:  Royal Caribbean highly prioritizes not doing decorations that include language or imagery that may be considered vulgar or offensive. It’s a family-friendly cruise line, so make sure to keep this rule in mind while decorating.
  • Safety First:  That’s the common rule all cruise lines have. For safety reasons, use flame-retardant materials for dressing up the doors.
  • The Doors:  The decorations you do should only be on your door or inside your room. They shouldn’t interfere with clear access to your room or the hallway for crew and fellow guests.

2- Carnival Cruise Line Door Decoration Rules

  • Fire Retardant Materials:  Like the Royal Caribbean, Carnival allows only fire retardant materials on the doors. Plus, ensure you’re using pure fire retardant materials instead of the fire retardant spray.
  • Placement:  Decorations should only be placed on your room’s door, not the surrounding frame, walls, or railings. Also, no decoration items should be placed over light fittings or fixtures, as these may restrict the airflow and cause the item to ignite.
  • No Adhesives:  Adhesives like tape or glue are not allowed. Only you can use magnets or Command Strips.
  • Door Hanging Organizers:  Over-the-door hanging organizers must hung inside your stateroom. Also, they must be of fire-retardant material that doesn’t damage the door.
  • Balconies:  You’re not allowed to make any decorations on balconies.
  • String Lights:  No String lights of any kind are allowed.

3- Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) Door Decoration Rules

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t allow you to decorate your stateroom’s door.

As per safety requirements, all stateroom door decorations are strictly prohibited on the Norwegian Cruise Line.

If you are against their policy, Stateroom stewards can remove all decorations and place them inside the room.

So, my dear Norwegian Cruise fellas, leave your decoration dreams home if you don’t want your stateroom steward playing the décor police, haha!

4- Disney Cruise Lines Door Decoration Rules

Disney Cruise Line has similar policies when it comes to decorating stateroom doors. You’re welcome to place magnetic signs on your stateroom door.

Also, items should not be attached using tape or adhesives that could damage the door’s finish. Plus, over-the-door hanging organizers are prohibited.

Resulting in any violation may cost you $100 per incident to cover the cost of repairs. So be cautious, and let’s keep those doors and wallets intact.

Bottom Line

Wrapping up with a discussion with a note that cruise door decoration is not only restricted to your personality or taste. It can also be used as an opportunity to connect with fellow travelers.

So, do not bound or restrict yourself to one idea while choosing the door decoration theme.

With that, planning door decoration is always a fun pre-cruise project. But again, before you do so, don’t forget to check your cruise policies to align with them.

Cruise Cabin Door Decoration Ideas

Whether you create your own unique door design or personalize a template, decorating your cruise cabin door lets other guests know something about you. Special occasions can feel even more special if they are shared. You may also want to include something about where you come from or your destination.

If you are cruising as a family, planning your door decorations can be an exciting pre-cruise activity. Make it a dinner-table-boardroom-type discussion where everyone can offer some input – some of the best ideas are often the simplest!

Things to decide:

  • Theme – do you want to focus on the season, a family event, the family members, or the destination? You may want to let your fellow passengers know information about which countries you have visited, how many previous cruises you have been on, or some details about yourself or your hometown.
  • Overall look and feel – do you want the effect to look glam and modern, vintage, classic, chic, or trendy? Maybe it just needs to feel homey and welcoming.
  • Color scheme – This is especially important for full-cabin door designs where too many bright colors on a busy design can look overwhelming.
  • Do you want to include some type of communication system ? An erasable message board is a great idea for groups or families that split up during the day for activities. (Find other ideas for communicating on a cruise .)
  • Do you want to use one large door covering, or would you prefer a group of small decorations you can add to during the cruise?
  • Do you want the door décor to be specific to the current cruise, or will it be used again on future cruises?
  • Are there any specific symbols, signs, or messages you need to include on your cabin door decorations?

10 Fun Cruise Cabin Door Ideas

Your cabin door is your own to decorate and communicate with other cruise guests as much as your want. It is like the screensaver on your phone, or the profile pic on your FB account – it conveys a message about the residents of that stateroom.

Let’s explore some fun and unique ways to decorate your cruise cabin door that will stand out and bring a smile to fellow passengers.

1. Go Retro

Popular cruise door retro themes include posters and pics featuring scenes from the iconic ‘Love Boat’ series. Retro pics from magazine covers can be customized and made into door magnets – be sure to personalize your design to ensure that it stays in place, as these can be pretty popular.

2. Make A Grand Statement Or Announcement

Door decorations can be great opportunities to celebrate or recognize a birthday — particularly those BIG milestone birthdays.

Or, they can feature other announcements that you want to share with the world. A giant ‘Jennifer, will you marry me?’ banner covering your door when your partner returns from a day at the pool would be a unique and memorable way to propose and get noticed!

Other big event cruise door announcements can include:

  • Just Married!
  • Wedding Anniversary Cruise
  • New Graduate

3. Have A Favorite Movie Or Book Theme

Using a theme from a favorite book or a famous line from a movie is a great way to meet new people and make friends. A short motivational motto or words from a favorite book can be interesting. Imagine a cruise door themed to Dr. Seuss’s ‘ Oh the places you’ll go!’ .

4. Nautical Theme

Yes, we know this has been done a million times, but there are new ways to jazz up an old theme. Your cruising vacation is special family time, so if you want a pirate, mermaid, or sailor theme on your door, go right ahead. Kids love keeping things simple, and the cabin door should also have special significance for them.

5. Destinations

If you and your family are frequent travelers, use your cruise cabin door as a logbook of destinations you have visited. Add small flags of countries you have been to, and you can even add a bucket list of places you plan to see in the future.

6. Convey An Interest Or Hobby

An excellent way to meet people with the same interests is to provide clues about what you are interested in on your door. For example, families who enjoy bird watching or horseback riding may use decals of birds or horses. Sports fans may like to include logos of their favorite team.

While all the decorations on your cruise cabin door must be made of flame-retardant materials, you can hang signs, small toys, or seasonal items like a wreath or tinsel on your door. Just ensure that it is well secured, looks neat, won’t fall off, blow around, and doesn’t cause obstruction in the passage.

8. Practical Cruise Door Decorations

If you are part of a team or tour group or have extended family cruising with you, you may like to include an erasable whiteboard as part of your cruise door décor. It’s a great way to communicate while you are in informal holiday mode!

9. Minimalist And Elegant

Door decorating can be fun, but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Many passengers enjoy the anonymity of being on a cruise and don’t want to attract any attention.

At the same time, having a decal on your cruise cabin door is a good idea as it differentiates it from all the other identical doors. That makes it easier to find, and you are less likely to have other confused passengers trying the door while searching for their own cabins.

There are loads of tried-and-tested simple cruise cabin décor designs available to order online that look elegant and stylish. An inexpensive peel-and-stick porthole may be all you need to make your cruise cabin door easy to locate without being showy.

10. Seasonal Cruise Door Decorations

Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, or Halloween decorations are always on point during the relevant seasons. You may be cruising the seas in a tropical destination, but you can still have a gorgeous warm, decorated fireplace motif on your cabin door.

Practical Considerations When Decorating A Cruise Cabin Door

The first and most essential step to decorating a cruise cabin door is to figure out the best way to attach your décor. Cruise liners that do permit door decorations all have strict rules in place. These include:

  • You may not damage, stain, or mark the door
  • No adhesive tape or sticky putty should be used
  • The materials used may not be a safety hazard
  • Potential fire hazards like string lights may not be used
  • The decorations must only be on the door, not the surrounding walls or doorframe
  • Decorations must never include profanity or be offensive

In addition, if you are planning a large banner or poster, you need to know the size of the cabin doors. Door size can vary slightly between liners, but the width of a regular cruise cabin door is usually around 23 inches. It is slightly wider for wheelchair-accessible rooms.

Another valuable tip is never to put anything sentimental or irreplaceable on your cruise cabin door. Unfortunately, some cute generic items or cruise magnets may get removed.

An excellent way to prevent your cabin door décor finding new owners is to personalize everything as much as possible. It is far less likely that a banner that says ‘Happy Birthday, Susan’ will vanish than one that simply says ‘Happy Birthday.’

How To Attach Cruise Cabin Door Decorations

Since you cannot damage your cabin door, it is essential to carefully plan how to attach your decorations securely to the door so it doesn’t fall off and look untidy. The two most commonly used methods are:

  • Magnets – Cruise cabins doors are most often metal. So magnets can be a perfect option.
  • Command hooks or strip s allow you to decorate neatly and securely and are easy to remove without leaving a trace. Just remember to bring a pack along on the trip! (Make sure that your cruise line allows command strips. Here’s an example of an approved policy from Carnival .)

Do I Have To Decorate My Cruise Cabin Door?

Cabin door decorating is a fun, voluntary activity. If you don’t want to decorate your door and want to relax, unwind and not attract any attention during your cruise, there is no pressure to put anything on your door.

Some tour groups may arrange a door decorating competition as an additional activity to look forward to during the cruise. However, it is always optional; if you don’t decorate your door, you won’t be alone.

Some cruise lines do not encourage door decoration. Norwegian Cruise Lines have banned door decorating, citing it as a safety hazard. However, most cruise lines allow door decorating to a more or less extent. Royal Caribbean allows door decorating, but it should remain simple and elegant, while on Disney and Carnival cruises, you can show off your creativity.

What Is A Fish Extender?

You may come across the term ‘Fish Extender,’ especially if you are on a Disney Cruise. Essentially, it’s a gift-exchange program among Disney cruise passengers . This is not an official event sponsored by the cruise line, but it is one that is well-established and operates through internet message groups .

A practice that has evolved is that passengers leave small gifts or tokens for each other on the fish-shaped hook outside each cabin door.

Fish extenders cannot be purchased on board ; rather, you must pack one if you want to participate. They can be purchased at various sites online, or you can make your own before the cruise that fits with your door décor.

What Is The Deal With Pineapples On Cruise Cabin Doors?

While pineapples are often associated with tropical islands and a relaxed beachy lifestyle, they have taken on an entirely different meaning on some cruises. An upside-down pineapple on a cabin door may indicate that the cabin occupants are swingers.

While there is nothing wrong with including pineapples as part of an overall large design, family cruisers may be better off if they ensure that individual pineapple motifs on their cabin door cannot be flipped over as a prank by mischievous fellow passengers.

Closing Thoughts

Decorating your cabin door on a cruise can be a great way to stand out and make it easy to know which room belongs to you at a glance. Plus, planning and creating your door decor in advance can be a fun pre-cruise project. Just remember to check with your cruise line first to see the rules regarding door decorations.

Cruise Door Decorations: tips, Rules, And Ideas!

Ahoy there! As a frequent cruiser, I know that one of the most exciting parts of a cruise vacation is personalizing your stateroom door. From colorful magnets to handmade banners, there are endless possibilities for decorating your cruise door and adding a touch of personality to your cabin.

But with different cruise lines having varying rules and regulations, it’s important to know the do’s and don’ts of cruise door decorations to avoid any surprises or penalties.

In this article, I’ll be sharing tips, rules, and ideas for decorating your cruise door. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, you’ll learn about ready-made and handmade options, materials and supplies, personalization ideas, and special occasion themes.

So grab your crafting supplies and let’s set sail on a journey of creativity and self-expression!

  • Different cruise lines have varying rules when it comes to decorating cabin doors, with Disney and Carnival cruisers being the most enthusiastic about it.
  • Door decorations can be made or bought, with craft stores and online shops offering a range of options.
  • When making your own decorations, magnets are the best way to attach them to the door, and personalized designs can be easily printed and laminated at home.
  • It’s important to follow cruise line rules and avoid damaging the door with tape or glue, as this can result in additional costs.

Popularity and Trends

I’ve noticed that decorating cruise cabin doors has become increasingly popular, with Disney and Carnival cruisers being the most enthusiastic, while Royal Caribbean cruisers tend to shy away from it.

It’s interesting to see the different decorating styles and cultural differences among cruisers. Disney cruisers, for example, often go all out with their door decorations, using everything from magnets to personalized signs and even fish extenders for organized gift exchanges.

On the other hand, Royal Caribbean cruisers tend to keep their doors plain and simple, focusing more on enjoying the onboard activities and excursions.

Carnival cruisers also enjoy decorating their doors, but with a focus on safety. Flame retardant decorations are required on Carnival cruises, and they advise against using card and paper decorations. Instead, magnets are the best way to attach decorations to doors.

It’s fascinating to see how different cruise lines have different rules and regulations when it comes to door decorations, and how each cruiser has their own unique way of expressing themselves through their cabin doors.

Cruise Line Rules

Most cruise lines prohibit the use of tape or glue to attach decorations to stateroom doors, but some offer stateroom decorating services for a fee. It’s important to follow the rules of the cruise line to avoid any damage or additional costs.

However, there are still plenty of magnetic options available for those who want to decorate their doors. Magnetic hooks, clips, and strips are all great options for attaching decorations without causing any damage to the door.

While some cruise lines allow magnetic decorations, most do not permit helium balloons. This is due to safety concerns and the risk of the balloons escaping into the open ocean. It’s important to check the rules of your specific cruise line before bringing any decorations on board.

By following the rules and using magnetic options, you can still have fun decorating your stateroom door without causing any damage or breaking any rules.

Ready-Made Decorations

I love browsing through Etsy to find unique and personalized ready-made decorations for my cabin door on cruises. There are so many options to choose from, and I always find something that fits my style and personality.

I especially enjoy looking for custom-made options that are specific to the cruise line or destination I’m visiting. It’s a great way to make my door stand out and add a personal touch to my vacation.

In addition to Etsy, I also like to check out craft stores and dollar stores for budget-friendly choices. These stores often have nautical-themed decorations that are perfect for a cruise, and I can always find something that fits my budget.

I love the creativity and fun that goes into decorating my cabin door, and ready-made decorations make it easy for me to do so without spending too much time or money.

Handmade Decorations

Creating personalized decorations for my cabin door is a fun and easy project that involves the whole family. We can use virtually anything to make them unique, such as scrapbook paper, stickers, and even seashells we find on the beach.

The possibilities are endless, and it’s a great way to get creative and make our cabin door stand out. One DIY inspiration we love is using magnetic paper to create custom magnets with our own designs.

We’ve printed out photos from our previous cruises and laminated them with self-stick laminating sheets to make them durable. We also enjoy making paper banners with our names or fun phrases using colorful cardstock and twine.

The best part of making our own decorations is the family involvement, and it’s a great way to make memories together while preparing for our cruise.

Materials and Supplies

To make unique and personalized cabin door decorations, I gather different materials and supplies such as scrapbook paper, stickers, twine, and magnetic paper. These DIY options allow me to create decorations that are truly one-of-a-kind and reflect my personal style. I love browsing craft stores for inspiration and finding materials that I can repurpose into decorations for my cruise cabin door.

When it comes to attaching my creations to the door, I find that magnets are the best attachments. They are easy to use and don’t damage the door like tape or adhesive can. I always make sure to use strong magnets to ensure that my decorations stay in place throughout the duration of the cruise. By using these materials and supplies, I’m able to create decorations that are not only fun and creative, but also won’t break the bank.

Personalization Ideas

According to a recent survey, incorporating personal photos and favorite quotes into cabin door decorations is a popular trend among cruisers. This DIY technique allows passengers to showcase their personality and make their stateroom door stand out.

Here are four creative inspiration ideas to personalize your cruise door decorations:

Collage of Memories: Creating a collage of favorite vacation photos is a great way to add a personal touch to your door decorations. Print out your favorite photos and use adhesive magnets to attach them to your door. This will not only make your door look unique, but also remind you of fond memories throughout the trip.

DIY Name Plate: Use wooden letters or letter stickers to spell out your name or initials. You can then paint them or cover them in glitter to add some sparkle. Use double-sided tape or adhesive magnets to attach them to your door.

Favorite Quote: Choose a favorite quote or phrase that inspires you. Print it out and attach it to a decorative piece of paper. Add some ribbon or jewels to make it stand out. You can then use adhesive magnets to attach it to your door.

Nautical Elements: Use sea-inspired elements like seashells, sand dollars, and starfish to create a beachy vibe on your door. You can use hot glue or double-sided tape to attach them to your door. This is a great way to bring the ocean vibe indoors and add a touch of nature to your door decorations.

With these DIY techniques and creative inspiration ideas, you can make your cruise door decorations unique and personalized. Not only will it make your stateroom easier to find, but it’ll also add to the overall fun and excitement of your cruise experience.

Special Occasion Themes

For my upcoming cruise, I plan on incorporating special occasion themes into my stateroom door decor. I love party planning, and what better way to celebrate a special occasion than on a cruise?

I plan on bringing decorations that match the holiday or occasion we’ll be celebrating, such as Christmas ornaments for a holiday cruise or balloons for a birthday celebration. I also plan on making personalized decorations, such as a banner with our family name or a photo collage of our previous cruises.

In addition to holiday themes, I also plan on incorporating other special occasions, such as a wedding or anniversary. I have seen some amazing door decorations that featured a bride and groom figurine or a ‘happy anniversary’ banner.

I may even reach out to the cruise line to see if they offer any special stateroom decorating services for these occasions. Overall, I’m excited to add a personal touch to our stateroom door and share our special moments with other cruisers.

Important Considerations

One important thing to keep in mind when planning my stateroom decorations is the potential cost of damages that could occur if I use tape or glue that may leave a mark on the door. Cruise lines have rules and regulations in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all guests on board. It’s important to follow these rules and take necessary safety precautions when decorating my stateroom door.

To help make the planning process easier, I have created a table below that outlines some decorating techniques and safety precautions to consider when decorating my stateroom door. By keeping these ideas in mind, I can create a fun and festive atmosphere while also avoiding any unnecessary damages or safety hazards.

By following these tips and being mindful of safety precautions, I can create a memorable and enjoyable cruising experience for myself and my fellow guests. Decorating my stateroom door can be a fun and creative way to add a personal touch to my cabin and make it easier to find my way back after a long day of exploring the ship.

Are there any cruise lines that actively discourage door decorations?

Some cruise lines discourage door decorations due to potential damage, but passenger opinions vary. Alternative ways to personalize your cruise experience include customizing your luggage tags, wearing matching outfits, or bringing themed accessories. Always check cruise line policies before decorating.

How do you remove door decorations without damaging the door or leaving a mark?

To safely remove cruise door decorations without damage or marks, I recommend using a hairdryer to loosen adhesive and gently peeling off decorations. For preserving, use self-stick laminating sheets or place decorations in a clear plastic bag with a label.

Can you bring your own magnets or do you have to use the ones provided by the cruise line?

Using your own magnets for cruise door decorations is a great DIY decoration idea. While cruise lines provide magnets, bringing your own allows for more customization. However, be aware of the pros and cons, such as potential damage to the door.

Are there any restrictions on the size or weight of door decorations?

When it comes to decorating cruise cabin doors, size limitations and safety concerns should be considered. Decorations should not obstruct the hallway or pose a fire hazard. Follow cruise line rules and avoid damaging the door.

Can you reuse door decorations on multiple cruises or are they typically one-time use only?

I’ve found that many cruise door decorations can be reused on multiple cruises, making them a worthwhile purchase. When decorating, I recommend using magnets and flame retardant materials for safety. Personalizing decorations can add a special touch to your stateroom door.

Cruise Ship Door Decorations Ideas

Planning your cruise ship door decorations ahead of time is so smart, and a good idea if you want to do something special.

Cruise ship in the Bay.

The first time many people learn about cruise cabin door decorations is when they are already on their first cruise. Uh oh.

By then, you are at the mercy of the ship store, and they don’t typically have a lot.

If the store does have stateroom door decorations, you’ll be paying a lot more for them than you could have if you had shopped ahead of time.

My goal is to prepare you with lots of ideas for your cruise ship door decorations. If you cruise a lot, you’ll gather your own collection of cruise door decorations to use on the high seas over time.

I remember seeing some doors beautifully decorated on my first cruise and thinking (slaps head) why didn’t I think of this?!

There are actually three different ports in Cozumel , so make sure you know where you are going!

I paid for two taxis when I spent the day in Singapore as I went to the wrong port. Don’t make that mistake!

⭐  Recommended Budget Hotel Illa Cozumel

Located just 0.2 miles from city center, this is a really convenient spot as it’s also just 0.6 miles from the airport.

Illa Cozmel has an outdoor pool, terrace, and garden.

⭐  Recommended Upscale Hotel The Westin Cozumel

Located 3 miles from city center, the Westin Cozumel offers a private beach, water sports facilities, outdoor pool and sun terrace, and more.

You can play golf, snorkel, and scuba in the nearby surrounding area.

Be sure to bookmark this list of what to do in Cozumel so you’ll have it when you start planning your trip.

Decoration Ideas

As I mentioned, it’s not totally too late to decorate if you weren’t prepared with cruise door decoration ideas. Once you are on the ship, there are gift shops onboard.

The cruise ship gift shops know you’ll be searching for cruise ship door decorations so you’ll probably find a few magnets to personalize your door, or maybe even a door hanger.

But wouldn’t it be fun to have something uniquely you?

I started a Pinterest Board  showing more ideas for decorating your door on a cruise. Join the fun and please ask if you’d like to be added so you can pin your door photos!

Before you move on, you might want to grab my free cruise packing list printable . This is just for cruises and will really help you get ready for your trip.

A few years ago I took a cruise to Cozumel on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas with a group. The organizer set up a contest for door decorations so we were really prepared!

Because I had the most creative roommate ever, we won! You can scroll down after the 10 Ideas for cruise door decorations and see all the doors from that trip.

Holiday Cruise Door Decorations

This is a no-brainer, but if there is a holiday coming up, use those holiday decorations!

My first cruise was in the middle of December. I saw the most adorable decorations with a Christmas theme .

You could even draw a big tree on paper and put your family names on the Christmas ornaments. All you need is a roll of magnetic tape.

For Valentines Day, you could do hearts. You get the idea. This Cruise Ship Porthole Peel ‘N Place is super cute. You may also find cute decorations at the dollar store.

Special Event Decorations

Are you celebrating a special occasion like a birthday , anniversary , or graduation while on a cruise ? Let fellow cruisers know by announcing it on your door!

Princess Cruises even has a package you can purchase ahead of time which is very clever.

The cruise ship door decorations I saw when I was cruising on the Holland America Maasdam were great as they made sure not to use adhesive on the door.

It looks like everything was attached to the railing and the door number sign.

Scrapbooking Door Decorations

Head to your favorite craft store and get scrapbooking decorations with a cruising theme.

They will probably not have magnets, but you can buy a roll of magnet backing in a strip. Just cut pieces to fit each magnet.

This is pretty inexpensive, looks great on the door, and is the easiest way to create something uniquely you.

Hometown Decorations

Love your state? How about your state (or country) flag or something special from your neck of the woods?

This is a fun way to get to know others from your part of the world.

flags on Holland America cruise cabin door

Destination Decorations

Use your destination as a theme.

Going to Mexico? How about sombreros?

The Bahamas? Beach balls and umbrella drinks! This one is cute and has the year on it, so will make a fun souvenir you can keep on your fridge at home.

Going on an arctic cruise? Look at this adorable Arctic Cruise Props Party Accessory.

If you are going to several ports, grab something from each one and put it on your door while you’re cruising.

I saw one door on Facebook that had been decorated for a European cruise, and they had a cutout from all the places they saw while there. Very clever and easy!

Don’t spend too much money as things could get stolen. I’ve only heard of one incident where that happened, and I hope it was a kid who didn’t know any better.

Interactive Cruise Door Decorations

Magnetic dry erase boards and pens are a great way to ask a question:

  • How many times have you cruised?
  • What’s your favorite port to visit on a cruise?

Believe it or not, people will answer! This one is a perfect size. Be sure to get a magnetic board. Command strips are not allowed as they can damage the door or walls.

Hobby Decorations

What’s your favorite hobby? Love movies? Grab some decorations of film reels and movie DVD boxes. Love to surf? Read? Get creative like this one!

flower magnets on cruise cabin door

Place a magnet on each side of the door draping string from one end to the other for a different way to display any of the above ideas, or even postcards you’ve bought along the way. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Selfie Station for the Win

And my favorite idea (from my roommate on the ship!) won us the prize for the best door. Create a Selfie Station!

Put up a frame mat with decorations all around, the name of the cruise line, the ship, and the date, and invite other cruisers to take a selfie! How much fun is that? And what a great memento of their trip!

Dos and Don’ts for Decorations

DO NOT use adhesives. Magnets are readily available and don’t damage doors.

Don’t get too creative and string lights in your room or on the door as this can be a fire hazard.

For the same reasons, don’t ever hang anything from the light fixtures. Just be sensible with your stateroom decorations!

And, of course, never use profanity on your door. The ship will probably take it down.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a cruise door decorating contest for a family reunion or other event?

You now have the know-how to organize it! Be sure to come back and share your own ideas in the comments, and pin your photos! I would LOVE to see what you create!

The first time many people find out about decorating your cruise door on a ship is when they are on their first cruise, but after reading this, you'll be prepared with your cruise door decorations!

And if you love cruising, check out the places I’ve cruised to get ideas!

We sailed on the Disney Fantasy Cruise for my younger daughter’s 18th birthday. We made incredible memories and if you have Disney-loving kids, I can’t recommend it highly enough!

For our 25th anniversary, we took our girls with us on a Viking River Cruise on the Rhine. Yes, honestly, it is more for adults. My husband and I absolutely love it, but our kids were bored on the ship.

There are better cruises for kids and teens. Our girls did, however, find out there is a lot to do in the Black Forest besides eating cake, and they loved the food on the ship.

My husband and I took the Rhone Viking River Cruise on our own. We found really incredible excursions and it was a wonderful getaway for the two of us.

We also loved the very romantic Danube Cruise, especially spending one day in Budapest. What a magical city!

I wish my girls had been on Carnival with me because I think they would have enjoyed it. The excursions were definitely more their style. Carnival is perfect for a Girls Getaway ! My sister and I had a blast!

A couple of years ago I flew out to Seattle for the Norwegian Bliss inaugural cruise to Victoria.

The ship goes to Alaska for the full journey, but I’ve grown to love Victoria so much that I was thrilled!

I finally got to Alaska in 2022! Be sure to know the best time to cruise to Alaska , as well as the best time to cruise to Alaska to see whales .

I few years ago I said with Norwegian for the first time, and I was thrilled to be on the Encore inaugural cruise. This line has a magnificent cruise from New York to Bermuda .

Finally, my longest cruise to date was on the Holland America Maasdam in 2019. I sailed with them for 20 days from Singapore to Malaysia, Thailand , Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and back to Singapore for one more day of exploring before heading home. It was the trip of a lifetime!

It’s best to check the website of the cruise you’re taking before planning your decorations. Limitations and safety requirements vary by cruise lines. For instance, Carnival and Royal Caribbean do allow decorations, only on the door, and they must not be inappropriate. The last time I checked, Norwegian Cruise Lines had stated they do not allow door decorations. Make sure you check for specific requirements.

Having a lanyard makes it easy to use your stateroom card for purchases, getting into your room, etc. Otherwise, every time you want to use it, you have to go into your bag or wallet. Keeping it in the lanyard keeps it safe, too. Hang your lanyard on the inside of your cabin door so you won’t leave without it.

In my opinion, YES! Though you probably won’t be in your stateroom for that long, it’s lovely to be able to sit outside. However, I will say I only had a window on a 20 day cruise and it was still wonderful.

Hi Kelly. I tried hobby lobby for the frame. Is that white background poster paper??? I only found actual magnetic frames for pictures. Nothing like this white background you gals had.

Hi Janell! I’m not sure which one you’re referring to. The selfie station? That’s a cardboard mat- like the ones you put inside a photo frame. We bought a package of magnet stripping to put it on the door. It comes in a roll. Does that answer your question? Please let me know! Sounds like you have a plan and I want to see it!! ????

We’re traveling with a group from our church and I would love to have magnets for everyone’s cabin door but all that I’ve found are small and expensive. We have 8 cabins and I’d like to have one for everyone in the cabin so that’s several! Do you know of an inexpensive place I could order some or even make my own? I think I’d rather have a magnetic sheet vs. magnetic strips. Thanks so much! I really love all of your ideas!

So fun, Kathy! I would think you could make them with a magnetic sheet and cut them. Maybe I can help. What are you thinking for the design? Does your group have a name? Let me know! Michael’s and other craft stores will get you thinking if you go in and browse. I’m excited to see what you come up with!

Don’t understand the flame retardant decoration? What no paper products or poster board?

Where did you see that, Eyvonee? Perhaps ask someone on the particular ship you are sailing.

I’ve taken 28 cruises & just returned from my latest back to back yesterday. I ALWAYS decorate my door, but ALWAYS have things stolen, ruined & broken. I use balloons to mark my door so we can easily find it down the long halls, but teenage boys run by & pop them over & over. I made crafty flip flops for each member of my family members, but they got stolen. I’ve used tape-on decorations but they get ripped. I don’t dare put nice magnets up anymore, as they are expensive & easy to grab & run. Please help me find a way to decorate without attracting the CREEPS who ruin my fun! The doors used to hold magnets, but now they don’t only the edge around the door is metal. Tape is a must! Any suggestions? How about easily removable paint? Marker? Stickers? Thanks.

This makes me so sad, Julie! I don’t know a way around the stealing, but I’m going to see what I can find out about what we can use besides tape. Grrr. Why do people have to ruin the fun?

You could always put one of those little fake cameras just above door with a note somewhere saying your being watched or smile were watching u lol

So can you use like wrapping paper on the front of the door to wrap it like a gift?

Hi Melissa – yes, as long as you don’t use adhesives. Use magnets for the back of the paper. You could add a bow to the paper with adhesive as long as it’s attached to the paper and not the door. I’d love to see a photo of your door!

What cruise line is it that the doors aren’t metal?

I’m not sure Shawn. Sorry!

How do you get the frame to stay on the door if you didn’t use tape? Also I love the selfie ideal! Plan on using that one! Gonna use a Bahama theme! So excited!

Please email me at [email protected] I used the wrong email.

It’s been a while, but I believe the frame was magnetic. When you go to Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, or similar, you can tell them what you are looking for. Even better, or on Amazon. so much easier to find exactly what you need, and I’m pretty sure I included some links. Enjoy and I want to see photos!! Would love to add them to this post!

Ooh thanks for that because I was going to inquire about the selfie station. Its my 40th bday so I want to decorate my door. Thanks for the ideas.

Happy 40th!! That would be so fun!! Email me your address so I can send you a little gift for your 40th. ???? [email protected]

I’m going on my 1st cruise next year for my 25th anniversary and trying to think of a cute saying or something to have a selfie station and find a cute way to somehow ask people to tag us in their photos to share in our celebration

I love this! What a great idea! Maybe you could add a hashtag with your names on it? Ask people to use the hashtag and tag the ship. That would be so much fun! I would love to share, and add a photo of whatever you decide to do to this post! Please keep me posted. I celebrated 27 this year!

must use command strips or magnets. if t is a heavy thing you can put one of the big command hooks upside down on the inside of the door and run a string up oveer the door to the frame. also put command strips on the frame so it does not bounce when door open

Can you still decorate your room door in a Carnival Cruise?

I didn’t see anything that said you couldn’t, Alex. I did see magnets in the store when I cruised with them just a few months ago. When in doubt, ask them. I wouldn’t want to give you wrong information. Thanks for all the comments!

yes but you have to follow their rules, no tape or adhesives except command strips and magnets, it must be flame retardant. no lights even if battery lights, only decorate the door and not the walls. must not fall off the door and cause any problems.

Yes, thanks for adding this Sandra. You have to be careful to follow the rules.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE SIZE OF THE DOOR IS?

It’s on Pinterest

Like you said don’t put anything on the door that you want to keep. I did have these cute magnets on my door and they were constantly missing. One night I was walking by another door far away and found one of my missing magnets. I know it wasn’t theirs because it had my name on the back. On this cruise I was thinking about buying a cheap door banner from Oriental Trading and then adding some of my touches.

Love, love that idea, Rose! I haven’t had my decorations taken, but it’s not surprising, especially if there are a lot of kids on the cruise. I’d love to feature your door here, so send me a photo! [email protected]

I had the american flag stolen off my statue of liberty- the people across the hall then stuck it on their mail box. really, you didnt think i would see it there.

That’s unbelievable, Sandra! Sorry that happened to you. Maybe it fell off and someone stuck it there? I hate to think someone would do that.

I’m going to check out Oriental Trading for decorations for our May cruise — Star Wars for May the 4th and something for May 5th (Cinco de Mayo). And then there’s Mother’s Day. Oh, the possibilities abound.

How do you decorate if the door is wood not metal?

Command post strips.

the doors are metal, so are the walls in your stateroom.

I’m going on a dancing cruise and would like to decorate our door. How much fun!

Love how you captured so many doors in pics! Very creative #seastheday

So many great ideas!!!

Do you know the size of the cabin doors on a RCL cruise? We cruise on Dec 14th and are planning to decorate three doors. Thanks Jean from Texas

I don’t know the sizes, Jean, but I’m sure you can ask their customer service department. Happy cruising! Would love to see pics!

Check Pinterest, you’ll find the door size.

Saw this and thought our boys would LOVE this! This is our first cruise coming up Nov 17th, Liberty of the Seas and, just found out there will be NO decoration through out the ship until the next week so that was upsetting being that I am the biggest Christmas guy around, dorkie yes but this is me. So, I think we might bring with us some fun, chessy multi colored lights for the cabin and maybe a tiny tree? Just some ideas for us to Kick Off Christmas Countdown! (??? right??? lol) Ideas are always welcome. Mike from Michigan!

That’s a great idea, Mike! Get your boys involved! Something interactive on your door is fun, too. Like a whiteboard where people can comment on your decorated door or simply wish you a Merry Christmas. We had a blast with our “selfie station” and you could make it “Christmasie!” Can’t wait to see what you come up with! Please let me know, and thanks so much for visiting!

LOVE the ideas – might have to “borrow” for our upcoming Girl’s Cruise. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for visiting, TravellerMel! Have fun!

It was, Jamie! Meeting you was fun, too 🙂

Door decorating was so much fun!

What You Need to Know About Cruise Door Decorations

Guest

  • May 7, 2023

Cruise vacations are not only about exploring new destinations and enjoying onboard activities, but they can also be about expressing your creativity through cruise door decorations.

In fact, cruise door decorating is an exciting way to showcase your personality and add a touch of uniqueness to the experience.

The best part is that almost every cruise line allows door decorating, with the exception of Norwegian Cruise Line , which banned door decorations back in 2019.

However, finding affordable and exclusive cruise door decorations can be a challenge.

Stunning door decorations aboard the ship.

In this article, we’ll provide some great ideas on finding (and making!) unique and affordable cruise door decorations to make your cabin stand out.

What kinds of materials are suitable for cruise door decorations?

Cruise door decorations are a fun way to add a personal touch to your cabin. But with limited space to pack and the need to adhere to cruise line policies, it can be challenging to find the perfect decorations.

It’s important to check your cruise line’s policy on door decorations. Some lines have strict guidelines on what is allowed, such as no adhesives that can damage the door or the surrounding frame.

Be sure to read and follow these guidelines to avoid any potential issues.

At the bottom of this article, we’ll link to each cruise line’s policy for door decorating.

When choosing decorations, consider lightweight and compact items that won’t take up too much space in your luggage. Most popular options include door banners, signs, and magnets that can easily be attached and removed.

You can also get creative with personalized items such as picture frames, monogrammed letters, or custom-designed decals.

Carnival Horizon Return Trip Report

One unique idea is to create a themed door decoration that matches the destination or occasion of your cruise.

For example, if you’re sailing to the Caribbean, you could decorate your door with tropical flowers or palm trees. If it’s a special occasion like a graduation, a birthday, or an anniversary, consider adding balloons, streamers, or a celebratory sign.

Door decorating is also popular for holidays, especially Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year.

How can I customize cruise door decorations?

There are a variety of options to choose from. From DIY projects to personalized creations, the possibilities are endless.

Here are a few ideas to get started:

1. Personalized magnets

Creating personalized magnets is one of the easiest ways to customize your cruise door decorations. You can purchase blank magnets at craft stores and then use paint or stickers.

Alternatively, you could order custom ones online with your name or a special message.

2. Door hangers

Door hangers are a popular choice for cruise door decorations, and various options are available. You could create your own using foam board or paper or purchase pre-made hangers explicitly designed for cruise doors. You can then add your personal touches, such as your name or a message.

3. Streamers and banners

Another way to customize your cruise door decorations is by using streamers and banners. You could create your own using construction paper or fabric or purchase pre-made decorations designed to hang on your door. Again, you can add your personal touches to make it unique.

4. DIY projects

For those who enjoy crafting, there are a variety of DIY projects you can use to customize your cruise door decorations. Some popular options include creating your wreath using seashells or other beach-themed items or using paint and stencils to create a unique design on a wooden plaque.

The possibilities are endless, and you can tailor your project to fit your personal style and interests.

(Note: Be careful using command strips and glue against the metal door; cruise lines can charge you a $100 fee if you damage their property.)

Where can I find inspiration for cruise door decorations?

If you’re planning a cruise vacation, adding a personal touch to your stateroom door is a fun way to stand out and make your trip more memorable. Finding inspiration for cruise door decorations doesn’t have to be a challenge.

With a little creativity, you can come up with unique and affordable ideas that reflect your personality and style. Here are some tips and resources to help you get started:

1. Pinterest

Pinterest is an excellent source of inspiration for all kinds of DIY projects, including cruise door decorations. Simply search for “cruise door decorations” or similar keywords, and you’ll find many creative and colorful ideas to spark your imagination.

If you’re not crafty, Etsy is a great place to find handmade and unique cruise door decorations. You can choose from a wide range of themes and styles, from funny and whimsical to elegant and sophisticated.

3. The Cruise Line Shop

If you’re sailing with Carnival, they offer a variety of cruise door decorations that you can purchase and have delivered to your stateroom. From signs to personalized banners, there are lots of options to choose from.

What materials do I need to create cruise door decorations?

If you’re heading on a cruise and want to add a personal touch to your stateroom door, you can use plenty of materials to create unique and affordable decorations.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Many cruise doors are made of metal, perfect for sticking magnetic decorations on the door.

You can find a wide variety of magnets on websites like Etsy or Amazon, including fun shapes, quotes, and even personalized names.

2. Caution tape

Want to make your door stand out? Use caution tape to create eye-catching decorations. You can find caution tape in a variety of colors and patterns, and it’s easy to cut and shape to fit your door.

3. Funny quotes

If you want to add a touch of humor to your door, consider creating a sign with a funny quote or saying. You can use materials like foam board or card stock to create the sign and then decorate it with markers or stickers.

Disney fish extender

Disney Cruise Line has a unique tradition of fish extender door decorations, essentially hanging organizers attached to the fish-shaped metal holder outside each stateroom door. These decorations typically consist of small fabric pockets or pouches to exchange small gifts or trinkets with other cruisers.

The idea is to create a sense of community and camaraderie among passengers, and it’s a fun way to add some extra Disney magic to your cruise experience.

Disney-themed fish extenders are widely available online, or you can get creative and make personalized decorations to showcase your unique style and personality.

With creativity and imagination, there are endless possibilities when designing your cruise door decorations. Whether you use magnetic pieces, caution tape, or funny quotes, the goal is to make your stateroom door stand out and reflect your personality.

Cabin door etiquette

When decorating your cruise door, there are a few things to keep in mind, including your fellow cruisers. Remember that you are sharing the hallway with other guests, so being respectful is important.

Avoid decorations that are too large or noisy, as they may disturb others in the hallway. Also, do not hang anything on your balcony; it might blow off and fall to the ocean or on someone else’s balcony.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you should avoid decorations that may be offensive or inappropriate, such as those with explicit language or images.

Remember that you are representing yourself and your fellow passengers, so keeping it classy and tasteful is important.

On the other hand, funny and lighthearted decorations, such as puns or humorous phrases, are popular.

A stunning cruise door decorations

Additionally, caution signs or warnings can be a playful way to jazz up your cruise door, such as “Beware of Sunburns,” “Caution: Relaxation in Progress,” “Pirate Infestation,” or “Shark Attack Zone.”

Ultimately, the key to choosing appropriate cruise door decorations is to use your best judgment and keep it fun and tasteful. You can make your cruise door stand out while still being respectful of other passengers.

Safety with cruise cabin door decorations

When decorating your cruise door, fire safety is an important consideration. Carnival Cruise Line ‘s door decorating policy specifies that all decorations must be flame retardant.

Aside from Carnival, NCL , and Virgin Voyages banning door decorations of any kind, there are no official requirements for cruise door decorations to be fireproof or made from fire-retardant materials. However, choosing materials less likely to ignite in a fire emergency is a good idea.

For safety reasons, if you plan on using paper or cardboard decorations, make sure they are not too close to light fixtures or electrical outlets. Most cruise lines prohibit string lights of any kind.

If you are unsure about the fire safety of your chosen decorations, it’s always a good idea to check with your cruise line or stateroom attendant to ensure they are safe and appropriate.

Safety should always be a top priority, even when adding personality to your cruise door.

Cruise ship door decorating policies

Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean , Disney Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises all allow cruise door decorations. Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises do not.

Final Thoughts

Decorating your cruise door is a fun way to personalize your stateroom and add some personality to your cruise experience.

However, it’s important to be safe and mindful of your fellow passengers by avoiding offensive or inappropriate decor and choosing fire-safe materials.

With these tips and creativity, you can make your cruise door stand out while being tasteful and respectful.

Dos and Don’ts for Decorating Your Cruise Ship Cabin Door

Find out everything you need to know about decorating your cruise ship cabin door, including which cruise lines allow it and which don't.

Dos and Don’ts for Decorating Your Cruise Ship Cabin Door

Share this post:

If you’re a first-time cruiser, perhaps one of the items not on your initial vacation to-do list is decorating your cruise door. But if you cruise often, you’ll come to find that on many cruise lines, decorations on cabin doors are a fun way that some passengers express their personality and display their excitement about the sailing. Whether it’s a banner to mark a milestone birthday or a wreath during Christmas, cruisers have been known to take full advantage of door real estate to transform their stateroom into a home away from home for the entire voyage — from the outside in.

Of course, even cruise door decorations aren’t without a little controversy. Some passengers lean into the over-the-top embellishments. Others feel it’s a bit tacky. Even cruise lines are divided on the issue of decorating cruise ship doors. Some actually ban the practice claiming it’s a fire hazard.

Dos and Don’ts for Decorating Your Cruise Ship Cabin Door

So ultimately, what are the dos and do nots of decorating your cruise door? Find out everything you need to know if you’re curious about snazzing up the door of your cruise ship cabin — including which lines don’t allow it.

Do check whether your cruise line allows door decorations.

Many family-friendly cruise lines embrace their guests’ creative compulsion to dress up their stateroom door. Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Princess Cruises all allow cruise door decorations. These can range from enthusiastic cutouts of Disney characters with kids’ names on them to hanging hearts for a honeymoon or anniversary celebration.

But even cruise lines that allow door decs have restrictions, which should be followed closely for safety reasons. For example, Carnival’s policy does not allow the use of materials deemed flammable or not fire retardant. In addition, they must be manufactured as flame retardant and can’t be transformed using a flame-retardant spray.

To avoid your room steward having to disassemble your cruise door masterpiece, read the fine print for your cruise ship before boarding with an entire bag of ribbons and posterboard.

EXCLUSIVE SAVINGS: Score Cruise Deals Now!

Don’t decorate your cruise door if the cruise line prohibits it.

This one is straightforward. Door decorating is a blast, but don’t do it if the cruise line tells you not to. If you’re cruising with a line that doesn’t allow anything on your door and you do decorate, it’s possible that your stateroom attendant will clean it off with a warning.

Cruise lines that don’t allow door decorations include but aren’t limited to:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line

Do use door decorations to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays.

If you and your travel party have established that (approved) cruise door decorations are permitted onboard your ship, then get ready to unleash your inner design artist. Surprise a friend or loved one by decorating their door for a birthday, bachelorette party, or a “just because.” Not only will they feel special every time they get to their stateroom but having a jazzy cruise door is also extremely helpful in spotting your cabin.

Not everyone is crafty, and that’s totally fine. Cruisers can easily purchase or customize online door signs and magnets intended for cruise ships. The best part is that some of them already adhere to cruise line rules about door décor materials. Others are even ready to adhere to the door. (Most cruise doors and cabin walls are metal and therefore work with magnets).

Dos and Don’ts for Decorating Your Cruise Ship Cabin Door

Don’t damage the door with your decorations.

Even if your materials are up to code, make sure you don’t affix them with tape or anything that could damage the door. After all, while it is your room for the week, it is still company property of the cruise line.

As mentioned, most cabin doors will be metal and should work easily with magnets. Though, there are some models with a wooden veneer. In many cases, Command strips that are easily removable after a few days might be a good option. If you’re not sure about the surface of your door, ask your travel advisor or look up some photos and reviews online to see if you can gage whether the door will be magnetic.

For those looking to turn their cruise door into a spectacular display of lights, know that no string lights or anything of the kind is allowed on the door or anywhere else in the corridor. This also extends to the ceiling of your cabin and your balcony if you have one. Regardless of cruise line, these rules are basic safety measures to avoid fire hazards and obstruction of the hallways.

If you do damage your door or insist on hanging prohibited materials, you could face a fine from the cruise line for the infraction.

Do use your cruise door as a way to engage with friends and fellow passengers.

We’re not talking about inciting a lively debate over politics. Consider hanging a white board and erasable marker so you can write simple messages or communicate with others in your cruise group.

Remember to only decorate a door even your mom could be proud of, meaning vulgarity is never acceptable. Not only will offensive content be removed from a cruise door, but you’re bringing bad vibes onboard. And, that is simply not cool.

Ask a question or a riddle, play Tic-Tac-Toe…the options for an entertaining cruise communique via door go on and on.

The holidays are an especially popular time to leave goodies on the door. Attach a small bucket or bag on Halloween so cruisers — or crew — can go “trick or treating”. Or, hang a few candy canes in December. A cruise vacation is all about having a good time, so spread the cheer beginning with your door.

Don’t let fish extenders or pineapples confuse you.

On Disney Cruise Line specifically, you’ll find pouches hanging from a wooden dowel attached adjacent to many cabin doors. These are called “fish extenders”. The name is derived from the metal fish above each stateroom number on Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. While this little metallic adornment varies by ship class (it’s a seahorse, for example, on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy), its purpose it to hold documents and tickets left by your room steward.

Dos and Don’ts for Decorating Your Cruise Ship Cabin Door

It also conveniently allows these fish extenders to hang, serving as a place for little gifts. Make your own fish extender or find an elaborate variety on websites like Etsy. Not only is it a place for friends and family to leave surprises for the kiddos, but prior to sailing, some Disney cruisers take to message boards to organize a White Elephant-style gift exchange for anyone who wants to participate.

In terms of the pineapple, it might seem like a festive, tropical fruit to brighten up your door for a Caribbean cruise. However, it’s worth mentioning that it has an alternative meaning when placed on a cruise door. Used in many cultures to symbolize hospitality, a pineapple on a door aboard a ship could signify that the couple inside is very hospitable…and open to meeting other like-minded couples, if you catch our drift.

22 cruise cabin hacks that will transform your voyage

Fran Golden

While some lavish and expensive suites on cruise ships are apartment-sized , most cruisers stay in cabins that are not particularly spacious or fashion-forward.

The decor is designed to appeal to everyone, no matter their personal tastes, with mellow or nautical colors and nothing too distracting. Storage space is often at a premium, and a cruise ship cabin's bathroom is likely far smaller than yours at home.

There are ways to jazz up your space, however. Here are some easy cruise cabin hacks to help make your onboard accommodations more livable, more personalized and less cluttered.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Add personalization to your cruise cabin

  • You will be in your cruise ship cabin for several days, a week or more. So go ahead and bring your favorite pillow, a picture of your kids/dog/cat, a teddy bear, a throw blanket or any other comfort objects you cherish at home, keeping in mind luggage space if you are flying to reach the ship.
  • When traveling with kids, let them bring a few of their favorite toys, along with a pillow and blanket.
  • A fun cruise cabin hack is to bring an erasable magnetic-backed whiteboard (which will easily attach to the cabin's metal door) and washable markers so you can draw pictures and leave messages – whether you're with kids or being flirty with your soulmate.
  • Real candles are banned on cruise ships , but battery-operated flameless candles can add a touch of romance to your room (and also serve as nightlights).

Don't be afraid to move the furniture around

  • Standard cabins have twin beds that can be combined into a queen bed, next to two side tables. You might also have a sofa or upholstered chair, vanity or desk, and a coffee table. If you have a balcony, it will be equipped with a pair of chairs or loungers and a drinks table. Don't be afraid to move the furniture around — you can ask the crew to help — into a configuration that works for you.
  • Ask that any objects in your way be removed. For instance, if you keep bumping into the coffee table, get it out of the room. Clearing away the ice bucket and wine glasses and anything else you're not using will add additional counter space.
  • Furniture can also be added. For instance, a stool can be replaced with a chair that may be more comfortable for your back. Ask your cabin steward for assistance.
  • If the mini-fridge is filled with soda and booze that you have no intention of buying, have it cleared away. You can use the space for any soda or water you brought from home and for snacks gathered at the buffet (which will also save you any room service charges).

Beef up the bathroom supplies in your cabin

  • Most mainstream ships now have shampoo, conditioner and liquid bath soap you pump from containers in the shower — an ecological and cost-saving measure that eliminates little plastic bottles. That's all fine and dandy, but what you get will likely be generic brands and not quite what you are used to at home. The same goes for any provided hand or body lotion. If you're fussy about products, bring your own.
  • If you are not a shower gel fan, bring your own bar of soap. If your cabin includes a soap bar, it likely will be a tiny chunk of soap like you get at hotels. On the flip side, if you prefer liquid soap to wash your hands, bring a bottle so you don't have to reach into the shower every time you want to wash up.

  • Another clever cruise cabin hack is to attach a hanging makeup or toiletry kit to the bathroom door. This will allow you to free up space around the sink and more easily keep track of your own supplies. The sink may or may not have drawers or shelves.
  • The switch for bathroom lights is often outside the door, meaning you will beam light into the whole cabin as you enter the bathroom in the middle of the night. Bring a plug-in or battery-operated nightlight for navigating around the bathroom without waking your cabinmates.

Improve your cruise cabin with helpful gadgets

  • You and your family will likely bring along a selection of electronics — tablets, phones, cameras, an electric shaver and maybe even a curling iron or other gizmos. That's a lot of stuff to plug into what's likely to be a limited number of outlets. Bring an outlet extender to accommodate all those cords. (Just make sure it's not one with a surge protector, as those are banned by cruise lines and will be confiscated.)
  • If you're a light sleeper, you might want to bring a travel-sized sound machine, or get a white noise app on your phone. Cruise ships have lots of creaks, rattling and other noises that could keep you awake.
  • If you plan to sleep in, pack some binder clips or even paper clips to keep the curtains drawn tight, which is especially useful in the sunny Caribbean. They're also useful in Alaska when it's light out at midnight when you're trying to go to bed.

Find clever hacks to create more storage space

Cruise ship cabins have a closet with hangers and shelves. There are also often drawers for clothes. Additional drawers for knickknacks might be located in the side tables near the bed or in the desk. When you're packing for a week — especially if you're packing for a family — there won't be enough closet and drawer space for everyone's clothes and gear, but there are ways to improve the situation.

cruise ship decorations ideas

  • Ask your cabin steward for more hangers if your closet doesn't have enough to hang all your clothes.
  • Alternatively, double up clothes on the hangers — a blouse or jacket on top of a sundress, for instance.
  • On many ships, the walls are made of metal, and magnets will stick to them. Bring some of your own magnetic hooks in case the cabin is short on the built-in variety so you have room for bathrobes, hats, snorkels and other hangable paraphernalia.
  • An over-the-door organizer can help you easily tuck away socks and undies or slot sunscreen and other small items into their own spaces.
  • A laundry bag on the floor of the closet lets you corral dirty clothes and keep them from getting in the way or mixing with your clean, unworn clothing.

Make use of the space under the bed

  • Your suitcases can be tucked under the bed so they don't take up space in your cabin or closet. If you keep one open, you can use it as an additional drawer.
  • If you're not using the bathrobes, slippers, hair dryer or other items provided — including decorative pillows if they are in your way — they can go under the bed as well.

If you’re going on a cruise and itching for something to do to help you with your pre-cruise prep, then you’ve come to the right place!  This post will discuss everything related to decorating your stateroom door!  And believe me, once you’re on your ship sailing the high seas, you’ll understand the importance of making your door stand out!

Table of Contents

Do people decorate their cabin doors on cruises.

The simple answer to this question is that some people do and some don’t.  I have been on several cruises and have seen both extremes.  My latest cruise was virtually devoid of door decorations.  I believe my door decoration and that of my travel companion were some of the only ones on the entire ship.  But even though there weren’t many decorations, we did hear plenty of feedback from passersby.  I was especially delighted to hear one small boy declare, “Hello, Sea Turtle!” and “Hello, dolphin!” each time he passed our doors.

Why Do People Decorate Cruise Ship Doors?

If decorating your door is a new idea, you may naturally wonder why you would want to go to the trouble of decorating a cruise door.  I mean, isn’t it kind of like a hotel door?  The simple answer is yes.  Your stateroom door will look much like a hotel door.  It will be pretty plain and have your room number on it.  But that’s the perfect place to start!  Here are some great reasons to consider personalizing your door while cruising!

Reason 1 – It Helps You Find Your Door

Experienced cruisers know that your room on the ship will be one of many in a long corridor of identical stateroom doors.  These corridors run down both sides of the ship.  Picture a hotel hallway as long as a football field.  All the doors look precisely alike except for their room number.  When you are coming from one end of the ship to the other, a decorated door will help you pick your room out quickly and easily.

I love when others decorate their doors because it doesn’t take long to recognize other door decorations to know where you are on the ship and if you’re close to your room.  I remember turning the wrong way off the elevator on a cruise and walking down the entire corridor before seeing several unfamiliar door decorations and realizing I was in the “wrong neighborhood.”

2 – To Make Your Cabin Feel Homey

At the end of a long day on shore, you’ll be ready to find your room.  When you’re cruising, your room is your home base, and nothing feels better than the familiarity of your space when you’re tired and ready to refresh.  A welcoming door with a familiar picture or sign is delightful and feels homey!

3 – To Celebrate a Special Occasion

Many people cruise as a celebration.  Think about honeymoons, anniversaries, notable birthdays, promotions, or family reunions.  These reasons all make great ideas for decorating your door and sharing that reason with the entire ship by decorating your entry for the occasion!  Maybe you’re taking an annual sisters’ vacation.  Let everyone know!

As you make your way around your ship, you will see any number of achievements plastered on doors.  Go ahead and acknowledge those exciting occasions.  When you’re on the ship, everyone is family!

4 – To Communicate with Other Passengers

You may want to communicate with others while on your trip.  If you’re traveling with other couples or enjoying a group cruise, you can use your door to announce where you are so they can come to find you.  Sure, you can text, but where’s the fun in that?  Not to mention, some cell services don’t work when you’re on a ship in the middle of an ocean, so this is a great way to communicate without the stress!

A white page with palm leaves surrounding a list of locations: Text says, "Looking for us? We're taking care of business: At the Pool, In the Casino, At the Buffet, In the Bar, In the Dining Room, In Port, In the Spa

Use this option (free download) on your door with the small ship magnet to indicate where you are.

Beware the Upside-Down Pineapple!

I feel inclined to discuss one specific kind of door communication here.  I was shocked when I heard about this, but hey – cruise ships are great for people with all sorts of interesting pastimes, so there’s room for everyone.  With that being said, let’s discuss pineapples.  Yes.  Pineapples.  It’s a good idea to be aware of the pineapple.

According to my research, wearing a pineapple or placing one on your stateroom door, especially an upside-down pineapple, is a sign that shows you are interested in swinging or wife-swapping.  Cruisemummy, a fellow blogger, breaks down all of the interesting details of pineapple culture on cruise ships.  Read all about what pineapples mean on a cruise here .  And if you’re into that sort of thing, by all means, you can pick up a pineapple magnet here.

5 – It is Fun!

Cruising is fun!  And decorating your door is fun!  And looking at other doors around the ship to see what others celebrate or enjoy is also fun!  So why wouldn’t you want to decorate your door?  Part of the fun of planning my next cruise is planning my stateroom door decorations.

What are the Rules for Decorating My Cruise Ship Door?

Now we’ve established that decorating your door is fun and valuable.  So let’s talk about the rules you need to follow when decorating.  Most cruise lines share some basic rules, but you’ll want to double-check your cruise line if you plan to do any decorating outside of these general rules.

  • Please do not use decorations that leave marks or cause damage to the door.  You may get a fine if you leave damage or a permanent mark.
  • Please do not use curse words, offensive images, or vulgar language.  Remember that not everyone shares the same sense of humor.  This rule is essential if you’re on a family-friendly cruise ship.  And most cruise ships have families aboard.
  • Please contain your cruise cabin door decorations on the actual door.  Don’t use large, 3-dimensional objects that stick out.  Cruise ship corridors are narrow and must have room for housekeeping carts and fellow passengers walking by.

Here are a few additional rules that apply to specific cruise lines.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival cruise fans should know that Carnival requires all door decorations are made of fire-retardant materials.  In addition, no scotch tape (or any tape) or glue, only Command strips  or magnets .    You can read their full rules here .

Disney Cruise Line

Disney asks that you use magnets rather than adhesives, including gel adhesives on Disney stateroom doors.  You will receive a $100 fine if you leave any damage.  You can read their full rules about Disney cruise door magnets here .

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lin

I enjoyed the two Royal Caribbean cruises where I saw the most door decorations.  Passengers go out of their way to share their fun ideas in some Royal Caribbean Facebook Groups.  Royal Caribbean is very family-friendly, so it makes perfect sense!  Royal Caribbean even sells room décor kids on their online gift shop !

Princess Cruise Line

Like Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises also allow door decorations and sell room décor packages in their online gift shop .

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line does not allow door decorations, so if you have your heart set on glamming up your door, you may need to consider a different cruise line.  The cruise line states that door decorations are not allowed for safety reasons, and your cabin steward will remove your door decorations and leave them in your room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will magnets stick to cruise ship doors.

Many cruise ship doors are made of metal and are perfect for magnets.  However, some cabins have wooden doors, which is often the case with suites, concierge staterooms, or “more expensive” rooms.  If unsure, pack some Command poster hanging strips to affix your décor.  They take up very little space, so you’ll be glad to have them if you end up with a non-metal door. What is a Fish Extender?

Disney cruises have coined the term “Fish Extender” for a little bit of extra magic aboard their cruise ships, and it’s all part of the fun of Disney cruise door decorations.  A Fish Extender, or FE, is a set of pockets that cruisers hang on their stateroom door.  Cruisers personalize each pouch with the names of family members or the family name.  Before the cruise, cruisers connect with others who will be on the same voyage via message boards or a Facebook Group for your ship and date, and enter drawings and arrange swaps of fun, small gifts throughout the week of the cruise with your fellow cruisers.

You’ll love this added magic if this is your first Disney cruise.  As if a cruise isn’t magical enough, add some Disney and some fun little goodies and gifts, and you’ll not only go home with a bonus memory or two but participating in the Fish Extender program is a fun way to make a few new friends, too!

Wrapping it All Up

When you travel on a cruise ship, you are in for a great time!  Decorating your door is just part of the fun and allows you to get into the cruise spirit!  You can make your decorations for your door, or lucky you – I’ve made some free printable door decorations to get you started!

Once you download your free printable door decorations, you can print your favorites on card stock and use Command poster strips  or magnets . to adhere to your door.  Another option is to use printable magnet paper .  If you’d like your door decorations to last for multiple trips, consider laminating them .    Once laminated, you can write on them with a dry-erase marker , too!

Next cruise you take, you’ll be ready to personalize your door and stand out from the crowd!

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

One of the best examples is Scenic Cruises. Book a sailing with this luxury cruise line and the fare includes absolutely everything, whether it’s international and internal flights or fine dining, butler service and excursions.

Luxury cruise lines can be fully all-inclusive too

Okay, so no cruise ship restaurant has bagged a Michelin star yet, but plenty of Michelin-starred chefs have helped shape the cuisine on cruise ships. Cornelius Gallagher has designed the menus for Celebrity Ascent, which sets sail in September 2023, and Seabourn has worked closely with Thomas Keller in the past. There’s no shortage of innovation, either – SeaDream Yacht Club recently launched the first plant-based menu at sea.

Collaborations between cruise lines and famous names in the world of food and entertainment are common, and now some of the world’s top designers are getting in on the act.
