Starting times vary from 8 am, 9 am or 10 am in the morning, and 3 pm in the afternoon which means that you will catch the sunset before you depart. Again, you will be collected from your hotel or desired location.

This safari tour in Dubai is radically different from the others. First of all, you’ll notice that your vehicle is a vintage, open-air 1950’s Land Rover rather than a modern 4X4.

As I explained, there is no dune bashing in this tour but rather the safari focuses on the heritage of desert culture and the exotic wildlife that resides in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

This is a 225 square kilometer (87.1 square miles) natural reserve which limits the number of tour operators who are permitted to organize trips here. 13. 1 or 1.5 Hour Horseback Dubai Desert Park Ride

Upon conclusion of the trek, you will be invited to wash and groom your companion horse and give them a reward of carrots. The tour is best suited for those with some horse riding experience as at times you will trot and canter.

It’s not guaranteed but if you’re really lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the rarely sighted Gordon’s wildcat.

Children over the age of 10 are welcome on this tour and it’s the perfect activity for solo wanderers, families, or couples alike. The start time for this tour is a languid 7.30 am and it concludes with a decadent breakfast at the Al Maha Desert Resort before you return to the city.

The most important thing to keep in mind when booking your hotel room is the location. Dubai is huge and spread out, so you want to make sure you’re staying in an area that’s close to the sights and attractions you want to see.

Generally speaking, here are the best areas to stay in Dubai:

Deira – If you’re looking for a more traditional Arabic experience, you can’t go wrong with Deira. It’s also one of the more affordable areas in Dubai.

Bur Dubai – This is a great option if you want to be close to the action. Bur Dubai is home to many of the city’s best hotels, restaurants, and nightlife venues.

Palm Jumeirah – If you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing vacation, look no further than Palm Jumeirah. This artificial island is home to some of Dubai’s most exclusive hotels and resorts.

Downtown Dubai – This is the best area for those who want to be close to the city’s most popular attractions, like the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall.

Dubai Marina – This is a great option if you’re looking for a more laid-back atmosphere. The Dubai Marina is home to many restaurants and bars, as well as a beautiful waterfront promenade.

MID-RANGE – Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina

Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina has a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a bar in Dubai. Boasting family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. The accommodation features a 24-hour front desk, room service, and currency exchange for guests.

BUDGET – Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr

Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr (formerly Roda Links Al Nasr) features a restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a shared lounge in Dubai. Featuring family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr offers a continental or buffet breakfast.

How to get to Dubai

Being the biggest hub between Europe and Asia and one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomes a huge number of airlines and connects the city with the rest of the world.

Located only 15 km (9.3 miles) from Downtown Dubai, flying to DXB is the most convenient way to get to the city. Once you land, there are several ways to get into the city center: you can take a taxi, the metro, or even the bus.

Although DXB is the biggest airport in Dubai, you can also choose to fly to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This airport is located in the Jebel Ali area, about 50 km (31 miles) from Downtown Dubai, and it mostly handles cargo flights and low-cost carriers.

How to get around in Dubai

Dubai is an enormous city and getting around can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re not used to such big metropolises. The good news is that there are plenty of options when it comes to transportation.

Public transportation – Dubai has both metro and public bus systems in place. Although the metro is the most efficient way to get around, it only covers certain areas of the city. The bus system, on the other hand, covers a larger area but it can be quite slow during rush hour. This is definitely the cheapest way to get around Dubai, however, it can be pretty time-consuming.

Taxis – Taxis are widely available in Dubai and they’re relatively affordable, especially if you’re splitting the fare with someone. Your best bet is downloading the Careem app, which is similar to Uber, and lets you order a traditional Dubai taxi or a private vehicle.

Car rental – If you want the freedom to explore Dubai at your own pace, then renting a car is the way to go. Just keep in mind that traffic can be pretty bad during rush hour, so you might want to avoid driving during those times.

Best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March when the weather is cooler and more bearable. This is also the peak tourist season, so you can expect higher prices and bigger crowds.

If you don’t mind the heat, then you can visit Dubai during the summer months (June to August), when temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). Each and every place is air-conditioned in Dubai, so you can take refuge from the heat indoors.

Just keep in mind that outdoor attractions such as gardens and water parks will be much less enjoyable during this time and it’s practically impossible to swim in the ocean because of the high temperatures.

If you want to avoid the crowds and get cheaper rates, then April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit Dubai. Prices will be lower and the weather will still be relatively pleasant.

Another thing to keep in mind: Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar but the exact dates change every year (usually it falls between March and May).

During this time, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and many restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day. Alcohol is also not served during Ramadan. However, nightlife carries on as usual and many hotels offer special rates during this period.

If you’re not Muslim, then you can still visit Dubai during Ramadan, you just need to be respectful of the local customs and traditions.

What to pack for a desert safari in Dubai

While Instagram may be flooded with photos of girls in flowing white dresses walking on top of sand dunes, that might not necessarily be the most appropriate clothing to wear in the desert.

In fact, you won’t want to be wearing the best outfits of your Dubai packing list for the desert, because you’ll get hot, sweaty and (most likely) very, very sandy.

You should opt for loose, flowing clothes that are ideally breathable, and comfortable enough to move freely in; you shouldn’t be wearing anything that’s going to make you sweat excessively.

You’ll also be in the desert, so a shawl or scarf to cover your head in the heat, as well as your mouth when you’re sandboarding or quad biking, would be a good idea.

When it comes to the colour of your clothing, I would steer clear of black or dark colours; that’s just going to soak up the sun and make you overheat. Go for light colours or white. Sunglasses are a must!

DUBAI DESERT SAFARI REVIEW: PRICES, BEST TOURS, WHAT TO WEAR + PRACTICAL TIPS

As a travel freak curious to know about local culture and off-beat attractions, visiting Dubai and its untouched desert landscape was on my bucket list for quite a long time. And I got it to check it off finally! After navigating through its diverse desert landscapes during our 10 days Dubai program, I am excited to share some essential information that you should know about desert safari Dubai. 

Planning Desert Safari Dubai: Top Tips

1. desert safari in dubai: where to go.

As part of our Arabian Desert exploration, we got to take in some of the region’s most stunning desert landscapes. 

This is hands-down the first choice to go for a desert safari in Dubai. It took 40 minutes for us to reach this area from the city center.

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Located about 50 minutes drive from Dubai, this is a protected reserve and, more importantly, the UAE’s first national park.

We visited this conservation reserve in the early morning for the sunrise hot air balloon ride.

The views were surreal, and the whole experience was magical! Yes, it was absolutely worth it. I enjoyed the hot air balloon flight. I felt heavenly calmness, observed the unequaled beauty of dunes and indigenous desert flora and fauna that inhabit the region. 

I was initially skeptical about taking a desert journey to Al Lahbab as the standard desert safari, and Al Lahbab Desert Safari program was more or less the same.

But we are glad that we finally took this safari.

The exhilarating ever drive through its unparalleled, enigmatic red dunes is something that we will remember for a lifetime. 

Liwa Oasis is one of our favorites. This incredible oasis is not anywhere within Dubai but in Abu Dhabi.

The best thing is that it’s a part of the Empty Quarter (locally known as Rub al Khali) – the world’s largest sand desert. 

2. Driving In The Desert

You can drive and discover Dubai’s desert on your own, provided you are an expert driver and have access to a well-maintained 4X4 vehicle.

But make sure that you bring your international driving license if you’re planning to embark on a desert journey on your own. 

3. Desert Safari Tour

As the above point was in no way applicable to us, we opted for an all-inclusive package for all our desert trips. We booked two of our desert trips - Al Awir Overnight Desert Safari and Hot Air Balloon Ride - much before our travel date. 

Red Dune Safari was somewhat an impromptu decision and hence booked last minute through the same service provider.

We can justly say that all lived up to our imaginations and expectations.

4. When To Visit

We being hardcore outdoorsy people, visited Dubai in January. The climate was warm during the daytime though pleasant, with a salubrious breeze. We went on our desert trips in the evening and on one in the early morning, both times the weather was cool. 

The winter months in Dubai are from October to March. And, of course, it’s boiling in the other months of the year, with July and August being the hottest months. 

5. What To Wear

Modest dressing is generally recommended for your Dubai visit.

But for your desert trip in Dubai, make sure that you wear the right clothing.

Avoid loose skirts and instead wear long-sleeved cotton or linen tops plus comfortable trousers. You may further require a lightweight jacket or a hoodie for your early morning or winter desert trips.

Complete your look with a quality pair of sneakers, gaiters, or sandals. 

6. Other Must-Haves

Regardless of your morning or evening desert trip, make sure that you apply a lip balm (of at least SPF 30) and slather on good sunscreen lotion or cream to protect your skin from intense desert sunlight.

Sunglasses are another staple to have on your desert safari.

To avoid sunlight directly hitting your face, you can use a hat (preferably a wide-brimmed one).

Also, carry a light shawl which is ideal for shielding your face and neck from sun and dust. 

What We Enjoyed Most About Our Desert Safari?

This was undoubtedly the most significant highlight of our desert trips in Dubai.

It is nothing but a super thrilling rollercoaster ride over the desert dunes. An exceptionally maintained Land Cruiser is used for this purpose.

But for our Red Dune Safari, we amped up the fun and thrill aspects by doing this part on a mighty Hummer, and it was well worth every penny we spent. 

Desert Sunrise and Sunset Views

Yes, we got to see both desert sunrise and sunset views, and no words could probably describe this phenomenon of the sun coming out of the desert sands. It was also amazing to see the sun going back to sands at twilight. 

This part is indispensable as it gives you a genuine slice of the Bedouin culture and traditions while allowing you to take in the traditional Arabian hospitality.

We were welcomed here with aromatic Arabic coffee and succulent dates that were much needed to replenish our energy after the electrifying dune bash experience. 

Camels are an intrinsic part of Dubai’s humble past and rich heritage.

Fascinatingly, it was once the region’s only means of transport in the ancient era.

And we got to enjoy this activity both on our overnight desert safari and red dune safari. Against the backdrop of endless desert sands, this wobbly ride on camelback was an exhilarating adventure. 

Quad Biking & Sandboarding

Quad biking and sandboarding in Dubai desert weren't actually included in our desert trip, but we did this for an additional fee. And it was super fun to ride the quad bike and test our balancing skills on the sturdy sandboard.

For those who don't know, it's simple to ride a quad bike. You can drive it with minimal supervision and, of course, without any prior experience. 

Cultural Activities

Participating in many cultural experiences was one of the most fun-filled parts of this desert safari.

Henna artists beautified our hands with stunning Arabic designs (but extra charges apply for elaborate designs).

Smoking shisha transported us to an altogether different era.

We got to watch falconry and also capture some fantastic souvenir photographs wearing traditional Emirati dresses. 

It was a multi-course buffet-style dinner with an inspiring mix of BBQ specialties, local Emirati favorites, and famous international delicacies. I ate starters, soups, fresh-cut fruits, along with several desserts and unlimited refreshments, to complement this rich, lavish meal. 

Traditional Entertainment

You can't help but fall in love with the alluring performances by the brilliant Tanura artist and the graceful Belly Dancer at the desert camp. Some of the participants even joined them along.

Camping In The Desert

This was one of the high points of our overnight desert safari! We had pre-booked this experience, and our service provider assured us that all facilities would be arranged for our camping beneath the desert sky.

It, therefore, was a hassle-free experience to cozy up in our fully equipped tent, set amidst the supremely isolated sand dunes. 

Hot Air Balloon Ride

For this, we had to sacrifice our deep sleep and start our day before dawn. But this magnificent sky-high experience enveloped by the most compelling views of the desert and enriched by cool pleasant morning breeze made up for it. We also got to savor a traditional Arabic breakfast as part of this tour. 

Roundtrip Transfers

We had the option to book desert safaris with or without transfers. As we luckily added it at the time of booking, the whole experience turned out to be incredibly enjoyable with an absolute peace of mind. One can choose from the shared or private transfer, and we went for the latter considering its affordability. 

What Didn't We Like About Our Desert Safari?

Our desert trips in Dubai were overall amazing but with a few minor hiccups. For instance, we expected a one-hour camel ride, but it lasted for not more than 10 minutes. The same applies to other desert activities such as quad biking. But for many precious moments and memories that we created during our desert safaris, these hitches are not very important. 

Is Desert Safari For All?

Not actually; there are many pulse-racing activities (mainly dune bash) involved in a desert safari which may not be ideal for those who are pregnant, have undergone any surgery recently, or have any serious ailment. You can opt for desert tours like Dinner in the Desert, which allows you to enjoy the desert beauty while getting yourself away from all the extreme actions and adventures.

Excellent service. We had our three young children with us and our host Adil was extremely great with the kids. The dune bashing was so fun and the BBQ camp was great and the food was excellent. The family absolutely loved it. My son left his sunglasses behind and was upset but Adil managed to recover them and have them delivered to the hotel. Thank you so much. Very pleasant and great experience with the desert safari. The Captain Adil is very kind and super nice. He picked up us from our choice of place and dropped us off at the hotel. We did the safari with BBQ Dinner and even got a short camel ride in!!! What an amazing way to spend a evening in Dubai!!! I highly recommend it, do yourself a favour and go for the full trip and do both the quad biking and camel ride with your safari, you won't regret it aaaand don't forget your phone, there's some great photo Stops in the desert our transporter and driver of the safari, Captain Adeel, made the whole experience even better, great company in the car, made jokes and kept us entertained and also helped us take some great pictures! He definitely made the entire experience way better and deserves even more than the 5 stars!

It was a great experience overall. It was as per the description mentioned on Headout Website while booking. Red Dune Safari was great, Adil, Commander and other support staff were very good and knowledgeable. Entertainment items were good and performed by professionals. My daughter enjoyed it very much. Food items spread was good. There are various types of Safaris at various prices. So one need to know which safari offers what. Overall it was very well managed and most importantly it was managed with safety and as per the time schedule provided. I would highly recommend it.

Dubai Municipality launches Summer Pass, Ultimate Safari Tour package at ATM

Dubai: For the first time, Dubai Safari Park will remain open during summer and limited number of guests will be able to visit the Park with a newly launched special summer pass.

Dubai Municipality, which owns and operates the emirate’s wildlife conservation centre, announced this on the opening day of Arabian Travel Market 2024 (ATM) on Monday.

Ahmed Ibrahim AlZarouni, head of Public Parks and Recreational Facilities Department at Dubai Municipality, said the super-exclusive Summer Pass will operate in the non-seasonal months from June to September, featuring three bespoke experiences: Summer Tours, Summer Safari Journey, and Walk in The Wild.

With limited daily batches of tickets available to small groups of up to 10 people, the Summer Pass has been specially designed around the animals’ summer feeding and sleeping patterns, in alignment with Dubai Safari Park’s commitment to animal welfare.

2-hour tours

The two-hour Summer Tours are private experiences hosted twice daily, with morning and evening options, the Summer Tours include the park’s much-loved Safari experiences as well as numerous different animal encounters.

The innovative Summer Safari Journey elevates the safari experience by providing two safari adventures in a private, air-conditioned vehicle accommodating up to 10 guests. For those seeking up-close encounters with wildlife, the all-new “Walk in The Wild” tour presents a 90-minute guided tour in the early morning. Visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, observe animals in their natural habitats, capture memorable photos and more.

Ultimate Safari Tour

After achieving 755 per cent year-on-year growth in travel trade sales in 2023, Dubai Safari Park has also launched a new trade-exclusive package to accelerate industry partnerships and boost visitation.

Unveiled at ATM, the Ultimate Safari Tour represents a landmark industry collaboration milestone for Dubai Safari Park as its first-ever ATM exclusive package for travel trade professionals.

Conceived to leverage surging travel trade sales and accelerate new partnerships, the B2B product aims to familiarise travel sector representatives with the 3,000-plus community of animals occupying six themed zones across the 119-hectare site.

Available for reservations until May 15 this year, the Ultimate Safari Tour is redeemable through the end of May 2025. The product includes two Safari experiences with a private guide, exclusive use of a VIP electric vehicle for six hours, fast-track access, reserved seating at live presentations, five animal encounters, a souvenir photo, and more.

“Ahead of reconnecting with our local and international travel trade partners at Arabian Travel Market, we spent months canvassing industry stakeholders to create our first customised travel trade product. In celebrating our triple-digit year-on-year growth in travel trade sales milestone, we understand the importance of looking forward. Our goal is to strengthen existing travel trade partnerships and forge new collaborations that widen awareness of the Park’s core value propositions of entertainment, education, and animal welfare,” said AlZarouni.

Industry insights

Al Zarouni will participate in a panel discussion entitled ‘Experience, Culture and Communities: Creating Better Propositions for Experiential Travellers’ alongside other industry leaders on May 7. Taking place on ATM 2024’s Future Stage from 10-10.40am, the session will highlight how tourism businesses, attractions, and destinations must focus on authentic experiences, creative journeys, and cultural immersions to optimise returns.

At ATM, Dubai Safari Park’s immersive and interactive stand features augmented reality activities, a Safari Bus experience and virtual animal selfie spots featuring some of the park’s 3,000-plus animals, as well as educational presentations with live animals.

Dubai, UAE –  After achieving 755% year-on-year growth in travel trade sales in 2023, Dubai Safari Park, one of the emirate’s leading immersive wildlife experiences, has launched a new trade-exclusive package to accelerate industry partnerships and boost visitation.

Unveiled on the opening day of Arabian Travel Market 2024 (ATM), which runs at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) until May 9, the Ultimate Safari Tour represents a landmark industry collaboration milestone for Dubai Safari Park as its first-ever ATM exclusive package for travel trade professionals.

Conceived to leverage surging travel trade sales and accelerate new partnerships, the B2B product aims to familiarise travel sector representatives with the 3,000-plus community of animals occupying six themed zones across the 119-hectare site, which is owned and operated by Dubai Municipality.

Available for reservations until May 15 this year, the Ultimate Safari Tour is redeemable through the end of May 2025. The product includes two Safari experiences with a private guide, exclusive use of a VIP electric vehicle for six hours, fast-track access, reserved seating at live presentations, five animal encounters, a souvenir photo, and more.

“Ahead of reconnecting with our local and international travel trade partners at Arabian Travel Market, we spent months canvassing industry stakeholders to create our first customised travel trade product. In celebrating our triple-digit year-on-year growth in travel trade sales milestone, we understand the importance of looking forward. Our goal is to strengthen existing travel trade partnerships and forge new collaborations that widen awareness of the Park’s core value propositions of entertainment, education, and animal welfare,” said Ahmed Ibrahim AlZarouni, Head of Public Parks and Recreational Facilities Department at Dubai Municipality.

To complement the trade product, Dubai Safari Park also announced a super-exclusive Summer Pass ticket  launched for the first time to the general public. The summer pass will operate in the non-seasonal months from June to September, featuring three bespoke experiences: Summer Tours , Summer Safari Journey, and Walk In The Wild .

With limited daily batches of tickets available to small groups of up to 10 people, the Summer Pass has been specially designed around the animals’ summer feeding and sleeping patterns, in alignment with Dubai Safari Park’s commitment to animal welfare.

The two-hour Summer Tours are private experiences hosted twice daily, with morning and evening options, the Summer Tours include the park’s much-loved Safari experiences as well as numerous different animal encounters.  

The innovative Summer Safari Journey elevates the safari experience by providing two safari adventures in a private, air-conditioned vehicle accommodating up to 10 guests. For those seeking up-close encounters with wildlife, the all-new “Walk in The Wild” tour presents a 90-minute guided tour in the early morning. Visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, observe animals in their natural habitats, capture memorable photos and more.

Following Dubai Safari Park’s new product launches at ATM 2024 today, Dubai Municipality’s Al Zarouni will participate in a panel discussion entitled ‘Experience, Culture & Communities: Creating Better Propositions for Experiential Travellers’ alongside other industry leaders on May 7.  Taking place on ATM 2024’s Future Stage from 10-10:40am, the session will highlight how tourism businesses, attractions, and destinations must focus on authentic experiences, creative journeys, and cultural immersions to optimise returns.

At ATM, Dubai Safari Park’s immersive and interactive stand features augmented reality activities, a Safari Bus experience and virtual animal selfie spots featuring some of the park’s 3,000-plus animals, as well as educational presentations with live animals.
