Kusadasi shore excursions & tours in turkey, book a trip to the beautiful city of kusadasi today..

Located about 59 miles south of Izmir on the Aegean Coast of Turkey sits the great port town of Kusadasi.

With a long history and culture all its own, Kusadasi is slowly rising as a great travel destination for travelers all around the world.

Enjoy fresh fish customary to this port town or try out some traditional Turkish food. Cheese rolls made of phyllo dough covered in ricotta cheese are a local favorite. Try these and other Turkish delights as you take in the amazing scenery of the area.

Dine at waterfront cafes that look out over gleaming, perfectly blue waters. The tall mountaintop of Pilva Dagi is the perfect backdrop to your view as you have your delicious meal.

Take a day trip to Dilek Peninsula National Park, also called Milli Park, for a fun day at the beach including hiking, swimming, biking, and other activities.

Our Kusadasi cruise excursions offer you an exclusive look at one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, the ancient city of Ephesus.

Ephesus was an ancient Greek and Roman city that holds so much history that it's referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Your tour guide will take you through the ruins of Ephesus to view the Temple of Artemis and the Temple of Hadrian.

The newly excavated area across from the Temple of Hadrian features houses of some of the wealthiest citizens that lived during that time. Their interiors feature beautiful mosaics and colorful frescoes owned only by the richest people. They even had heating pipes and running water.

You will also visit the Odeon, the two-level Library of Celsus. This impressive ancient roman building houses over 12,000 scrolls. It was well visited by many of the top scholars and was a place of learning.

The Virgin Mary House, located at the top of Nightingale Mountain, is a site you'll surely not want to miss. This is the very house where people believe she spent her last years. Entire pilgrimages and even some popes have trips to visit this small brick house.

You can also see the astonishing Grand Theater where St. Paul preached to the Ephesians.

Located 18 miles north of Ephesus is the city of Priene. Here you can see the ruins of the Temple of Athena and even find remnants of the wall that surrounded the city.

About 14 miles from Priene, you'll find the city of Miletus. This city was known for having a large Roman amphitheater. Gladiator matches and other grand spectacles were held here. Imagine sitting in the same seats where people used to watch gladiators fight to the death.

12 miles away from Miletus, you'll find the city of Didyma. This city contains ruins of the Temple of Apollo. This temple, built around 550 B.C., was supported by an incredible 112 columns.

These are the most well-preserved ancient sites across the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Discover the endless history and beauty of Ephesus privately or with a small group. Learn about the Ionian history, and experience traditional Turkish village life as soon as you arrive at the Kusadasi Port.

Exploring Ephesus on a Cruise Excursion

This article may contain referral links. Read our DISCLOSURE

An Ephesus cruise excursion is easily the highlight of a Mediterranean cruise itinerary , especially for lovers of antiquity. The fourth largest city in the eastern Roman Empire during the 2nd century BC, the city’s amenities included a library and medical school. I certainly enjoyed my one day in Ephesus while on a Mediterranean cruise.

Today, visitors to Ephesus marvel at the ruins of the UNESCO World Heritage site . And it’s a very popular excursion when Mediterranean cruises call on Kusadasi, Turkey. If you’re curious about visiting Ephesus from a cruise ship, read on!

Table of Contents

What to expect on an Ephesus cruise excursion

Roman columns rest against each other on the ground at Ephesus.

Standing at the top of the hill in Ephesus, near the Magnesia Gate (south entrance), I look around to see artifacts scattered on the ground as if someone forgot to put the giant pieces of a puzzle together. Considering the numerous earthquakes that have occurred in the area through the centuries, there’s a strong likelihood that this puzzle will never be completed.

Are you planning a cruise? Use our Luxury Cruise Travel Planner to begin your research.

I’ve visited numerous antiquity sites around the world including Rome , Pompeii, the Pyramids and even Anasazi cliff dwellings in the Southwestern U.S. Although these sites always impress me, none compare to Ephesus, in my opinion.

Stone stairs lead to more ruins on an Ephesus shore excursion.

I explored the ancient Roman city on an Ephesus cruise excursion with Royal Prince Cruise ( check itineraries here ) when the ship docked in Kusadasi, Turkey. Along with approximately 20 other cruise guests, I boarded a small bus right after breakfast for the 45-minute ride to the Magnesia Gate and the beginning of an early morning tour.

Did you know that Ephesus has been rebuilt at numerous times and not all in the same location? More surprisingly, the ancient city once fronted the Agean Sea before the Cayster (Kucuk Menderes) River began filling up with silt. Those are just two of the facts that I learned from tour guide, Regina, on the ride to Site #3, the Ephesus of Roman and early Christian times.

Boomer Travel Tip

Will you be cruising in the Mediterranean? Before booking an excursion, check out our Mediterranean shore excursion reviews.

Start your Ephesus tour at the Magnesia Gate

Be sure to use the clean bathrooms at the Magnesia Gate before you enter Ephesus. Cost to use them is 50E. The next facilities are located at the end of your 3 to 4-hour tour.

After entering the gate, our group circled around Regina near the edge of an empty field littered with archaeological artifacts as she began her explanations.

“Approximately 90% of Ephesus has yet to be uncovered,” Regina told us.

My mind reeled with the possibilities of what was located beneath the very ground where I stood.

The stone arched front of the Temple of Hadrian.

As we walked along the main trail, Regina described how the city was organized into sections for commercial, political, and educational uses. Yes, city planning existed long ago, a reminder that modern-day man is not solely responsible for the advances in civilization despite our big egos that let us think so.

The two-storied Library of Celsus in Ephesus.

Beginning our descent down the hill along Curetes Way, more of Ephesus revealed itself, with many well-defined structures to explore. The imposing Library of Clesus stood at the bottom of the hill and was easily the most impressive structure of the archaeological site.

Purchase a separate ticket to see the Terrace Houses

Terrace houses being excavated in Ephesus, Turkey.

Our tickets included admission to the Terrace Houses where archaeologists are painstakingly reconstructing the homes of wealthy Ephesians—tile by mosaic tile. Protected by a canvas roof, the site is still being restored while visitors view the progress from plexiglass walkways suspended over the homes.

Purchasing a ticket to visit Ephesus does not include entrance to the Terrace Houses, House of Mary, Archaeological Museum of Ephesus or Basilica of St. John, all of which require separate tickets.

By the time our tour ended (near the public restrooms), the crowds had increased and the temperature was soaring. Time was allowed for browsing the stores that line the road on the way to the amphitheater. You’ll find trinkets, souvenirs and persistent shopkeepers and hawkers. I recommend saving any major shopping, like jewelry, for Kusadasi.

The air-conditioned bus was a welcome relief. On the ride back to the Royal Princess, one of Regina’s comments kept playing in my mind. “Approximately 90% of Ephesus has yet to be uncovered.” Think of the possibilities.

Crowds line the streets by midday in Ephesus, Turkey.

Tips for visiting Ephesus from a cruise ship:

  • Bring 50E to use the bathroom before entering the site, if you enter from the Magnesia Gate.
  • Bring sun protection: sunscreen , hat and water. It’s hot during August!
  • Find shady spots to rest while the tour guide talks to conserve energy in the heat.
  • Book the earliest excursion possible to avoid crowds and the heat of the day.
  • Watch your step as ground is uneven and the marble is slippery
  • Don’t pet the stray cats and dogs that are everywhere. They have not been inoculated.
  • Know the exchange rate, if you’re planning to purchase souvenirs.
  • Attending a concert excursion at the amphitheater doesn’t guarantee a visit to the rest of Ephesus.

Read our tips for surviving a summer Mediterranean Cruise . It’s going to be hot!

More Mediterranean cruise excursions with an emphasis on archaeology:

  • Explore Selinunte Archaeological Park on cruise excursion from Trapani, Sicily.
  • Visit the ancient city of Nora when your ship calls on Cagliari, Sardinia.
  • Experience Greek and Roman history on a Syracuse shore excursion in Sicily.

Walk through the excavated ruins in Ephesus, Turkey’s most celebrated archaeological site, and discover how the ruins bring the past vividly to life.

After departing from the pier, you will drive inland to Ephesus, perhaps the best-preserved ancient city in the region. As you meander through the painstakingly excavated ruins of this World Heritage site, you will behold one spectacular building after another.

You can expect to see the Great Theater where St. Paul spent three years in the 1st century preaching the Gospel. The theater can hold 25,000 spectators, so you can imagine the scene when the house was full for momentous events.

According to written history, a large Jewish community lived in Ephesus but no synagogue has yet been excavated. However, a Jewish lamp has been found, confirming the texts that described the Jewish residents.

The Library of Celsus is another architectural highlight. The monument was constructed as a mausoleum with a separate library for scrolls and codexes. It was named for the city’s Roman governor in the 2nd century.

One column of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, also remains. The first temple of its size to be built entirely of marble, it was considerably larger the Parthenon. The Roman author, philosopher and military commander Pliny the Elder wrote about the temple in detail, including its measurements and furnishings.

Pamukkale Trip

I had a prompt and enjoyable service through Castle Tours. We were a group of 11 people and this was a customised personal tour. The van and guide arrived on time and has been very flexible and helpful throughout..They have been helping and accomodating with small kids and the guide was very informative..They never made any fuss with timings nor stayed with us all the way through. The cost was very reasonable and could pay in any currency via portable paying machine on the day....Highly recommend...

Reassuringly The Guides really were excellent in every way welcoming, friendly, extremely helpful, informative, doing their upmost in catering for every wish & desire! You have to visit Izmir.i'd put it right at the top of your Turkish itinerary. A must do.don't pass by this opportunity if you can.you'll savour this beautiful city & its wonderful people.the sights, tastes, sounds & smells will captivate you.the iskender OR bursa kebab lunch was so delicious & my Partner even had a chicken curry at the same restaurant we stopped off at in Izmir which was so appetising full of fresh ingredients! you can even see some of the cooking being done right in front of your very eyes.there's a fair bit of walking involved but well worth it if you're able to manage it.the ferry ride to the other side of Izmir is so delightful.the Male Market Sellers are a bit of a pest though.it feels like every one is trying to persuade you into their business to spend your cash but hey that's part of the Turkey experience.keep moving on & it's fine.wallow in the splendour of one of Turkeys most fab cities

Amazing sites & fun guides.

Super tour with Castle Travel! Our guide Yeliz took us from Izmir to the three main sites at Pergamon: the Asklepion, the Red Basilica, and the Akropolis. She had all kinds of interesting stories to tell about each of the sites and really brought them to life for us. I would go on a tour with her again in a second. She was great to hang out with, as were our guide-in-training, Mustafa and our driver Umet. Pickup was right on time. Yeliz knew some great local places to stop for lunch and tea, and clued us in regarding local culture as well as the amazing sites of Pergamon. Highly recommended!

Thanks harunn.

Pamukkale is a fascinating place, I found its hot spring interesting. We wanted to do a balloon tour, but unfortunately it was not possible due to weather conditions. It was not possible to enter the Cleopatra pool either. Hierapolis was impressive. Our guide, Mr. Harun, was caring and communicative. If we come again, we will prefer the summer months...

Pamukkale Tour

Our experience with Harun touring Pamukkale was fantastic, he was engaging and had good energy and was very knowledgeable about the history of the region. Pamukkale was exceptional and beautiful, we dipped ourselves in the thermal pools and took lots of great shots and also swam in Cleopatras pool. Harun was proactive in helping us take some good photos for memories and we had more than enough time to have a worthwhile time. It was lots fun and the lunch was great, one of the best meals we had in Turkey by far.

Ancient Ephesus

Experience ancient Ephesus, considered to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Great Theater dates back to the Hellenistic period and in the 1st century A.D., it was reconstructed and expanded by the Romans to a seating capacity of 25,000. This is also the place where St. Paul preached to the Ephesians. It is still used for performances today, and the acoustics are excellent. The Marble Road, which runs between the theater and the Celsus Library, is part of a sacred walkway that you will take to reach the Celsus Library and Hadrian’s Temple. The temple was dedicated in A.D. 118 to Hadrian, Artemis and the people of Ephesus. This impressive Corinthian-style temple has beautiful reliefs on the porch, and the Ephesians believed that the Medusa head on the porch would protect the city from its enemies. Then, return to Kusadasi to enjoy the traditional Turkish experience of sipping apple tea while watching a myriad of colors unfold before your eyes during a carpet demonstration. Those interested in purchasing a carpet can do so with confidence. Those not wishing to stay can walk directly back to the ship, or remain in town for browsing in the shops.

The capital of the ancient city of Anatolia, Ephesus is an extremely splendid metropolis. This mega ancient city has been standing for thousands of years with its world-famous architectural monuments.

Based on Anatolia’s mother goddess (Kybele) tradition, the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, also increases the importance of Ephesus. Excellent trip.We booked this through Thomas Cook, and had a really knowledgable guide who took us through the history of the place. It was a great expereince, but it’s very open, so bring water and a cap!
Outstanding tour. We have taken many tours over the years and this was definitely the best! Oscar our guide was very knowledgeable and took the time to really connect with each of us. The tour was totally customized to our desires. Will definitely tour with the tours by locals from now on!

Cathy Drescher

Ephesus was amazing and so was our tour guide, Cigdem Goktas. Cigdem’s English was good and she was very knowledgeable about the areas that we visited: the house of Mary, the ruins of the city of Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis…. We learned so much history from her. Reliable Travel connected us with Cigdem who is an independent tourist guide. I would definitely recommend her.

All guides wait otside the terminal and they hold a sign with their guest’s name.

You will need Turkish lira to buy the entrances. In all sights (except the House of Mary) you can purchase the entrance with credit card. If you do not have any Turkish lira on the day of the tour, your guide can pay for the entrances and you can pay him back at the end of the tour in USD or euros. If you decide to book Ephesus tour, we can also give you the price that includes the entrances.

All the vehicles are non-smoking and air-conditioned. We usually use Mercedes Sprinter and Mercedes Vito. You can see our vehicles

The driving distance from Kusadasi to Ephesus is 30 minutes.

You can pay in advance (bank transfer, credit card or PayPal – there is a small additional fee for this kind of payment), or you can pay cash to your guide at the end of the tour.

During the high season, on some busy days, there are 4-5 cruise ships in Kusadasi port and thousands of people visiting the sight. Local guides have priority for buying entrances, so it is also one of advantages of taking a private tour of Ephesus .

It can be very hot, 38 ºC (100.4 ºF) ir even more, and since there is not much shade in Ephesus, we advise you to bring hat, umbrella and water…

We usually spend around 2 hours in Ephesus, which is enough time to see all the most important parts of this sight. However, our private Ephesus tours are tailor made, so we do not limit our guests time for sightseeing. It all depends on your interests and available time.

No, it is definitely not difficult anymore, as there are new, additional wooden paths for wheelchairs inside of Ephesus.

During religious holidays and on Sundays there is a mass organizes in Virgin Mary’s House and everybody can join it. It is also possible to arrange a private mass for groups. If you are interested in this option, a priest must be informed in advance.

This Temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world. There is only one column left there. But it is nice to hear the history of the place, so that you can understand Ephesus better.

During our tours, we never make any shopping stop, unless the customer requires so. All the tours are tailor made. So our guests decide where to go and how much time to spend in each sight. Even if you are not on the market for carpets, it may be interesting for you to see this demonstration as a part of Turkish culture.

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey

Kusadasi in Turkey is the gateway to one of the most legendary cities of the ancient world: Ephesus. St. Paul preached in its Great Theater, while the facade of the Celsus Library survives as a testament to the city’s role as a center of learning and culture.

Not far from Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis (also known as the Temple of Diana), one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, once stood, drawing pilgrims from around the Mediterranean. While it no longer stands, it is possible to walk amongst its foundations and the remains of its towering columns.

Other historic sites can also be found nearby: The House of Mary is believed to be the home of Jesus’s mother at the end of her life, and the Basilica of St. John, constructed in the 6th century, marks the location of his tomb. (Like Mary, he spent his final years in Ephesus.) Nearby, the Selcuk fortress reflects the period of Byzantine and Ottoman control of the region.

From ancient wonders to holy sites, there are few ports in the Mediterranean as magical as Kusadasi, and a day here is a day spent in the company of some of antiquity's greatest figures.

Princess Cruises Announces Revised 2025 World Cruise Itineraries

Uncertainties in the red sea and surrounding region prompts rerouting of global voyages.

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

SANTA CLARITA, Calif., (April 30, 2024)  – Given the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and surrounding area and following extensive consultation with global security experts and government authorities, Princess Cruises is revising the itineraries for its two 2025 World Cruises, which will no longer visit the Middle East or Asia, and now instead, will offer new port stops in Africa and Europe.

“A Princess World Cruise is truly the voyage of a lifetime and after careful consideration with guidance from global security experts and government authorities, we know our guests will understand and appreciate the change to our upcoming 2025 itineraries to avoid certain areas,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. “These global events beyond our control have necessitated these reroutings but we are pleased to continue to ensure these world cruises retain destination-rich itineraries with incredible stops along the west Africa coast and the Mediterranean.”

Island Princess World Cruise

Sailing from North America on Island Princess, the 116-day World Cruise offers two roundtrip options with departures from both Ft. Lauderdale, embarking January 5, 2025, and Los Angeles on January 20, 2025, and ends in Los Angeles on May 17, 2025. This destination dreamers delight will traverse over 36,700 nautical miles, visiting 46 destinations in 24 countries and six continents. The voyage includes visits to historic Bar, Montenegro and Taranto, Italy, along with inaugural World Cruise calls to the idyllic Greek Island of Patmos and to Volos – for the Monasteries of Meteora.

The revised World Cruise itinerary, from February 16-April 9, departs Sydney and will travel to Melbourne and Perth, then on to South Africa. From there, the cruise resumes the scheduled itinerary starting in Valletta, Malta on April 9.

Following is the amended portion of the voyage:

Those guests scheduled to originally depart or join the cruise from Dubai on March 14, 2025, will now embark or disembark four days earlier on March 9, in Cape Town, South Africa. Booked guests disembarking in Cape Town will be refunded the amount equivalent to four days of the cruise fare and those joining earlier will not incur an added cost to their cruise fare. All these guests will also receive a $300 onboard credit as a gesture of good will.

Crown Princess World Cruise

Departing from Down Under, Crown Princess - the largest ship to ever host a World Cruise - is scheduled to depart Auckland May 31, 2025; and Sydney June 4, 2025; and sail on a 113-day adventure visiting 42 destinations in 22 countries, across five continents. This cruise will also bypass the Red Sea and surrounding region, including the transit of the Suez Canal. The ship will travel via Africa instead of the Red Sea and Asia itinerary. The fully revised itinerary is currently being finalized and will be communicated shortly.
