As you can see from this list, you have so many options to choose from as far as Sayulita sites and Sayulita things to do.

The real question comes next — which ones will you pick when traveling to Sayulita?!

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Sayulita, Mexico, you’ve come to the right place! Sayulita is a place I’ve loved for quite some time, and probably my single favorite spot on the Pacific coast of Mexico.

I first visited Sayulita for a women’s fitness retreat in 2011, and returned for a weekend in early 2022 when I was living in Puerto Vallarta for the winter. What a difference a decade makes! There was so much more development in this small town on the Riviera Nayarit. The crowd has become less bohemian and more smartly coiffed, too.

Sayulita is a surf town, which is what first drew travelers to its shores. It’s one of the best places in Mexico to learn to surf, but if you’re an experienced surfer, there are plenty of killer waves for you, too.

What struck me about Sayulita this time around was that it feels tailor-made for elder millennials like me. While Sayulita does have its share of Mexican travelers, the town is dominated far more by American and Canadian travelers in their thirties.

Go out at night and one bar will be playing Californication -era Red Hot Chili Peppers. Another will be blasting early 2000s hip-hop, from Dre and Snoop to 50 Cent and Ludacris.

A lot of towns in Mexico cater to the backpacker party crowd — tons of hostels and dirt-cheap bars. Sayulita caters to an older, more moneyed crowd with upscale restaurants, fabulous boutiques, and chic bars on top of the quintessential cheap taco spots.

And when the sun goes down, Sayulita is all about the party scene! It’s just less about clubs and giant beers, and more about nice cocktails and live music.

Sayulita is one cool place — full of surfing, gorgeous jungle hikes, excellent dining, and spectacular views. If you’re in your thirties and looking for a Mexican beach getaway this winter, Sayulita is the perfect place for you.

Best Things To Do in Sayulita, Mexico

There are so many awesome things to do in Sayulita — and yes, more than just surfing and partying. Sayulita has jungle on one side and ocean on the other, making it a fabulous destination for adventure seekers. You can hike, zipline, ride ATVs, and finish it up with a yoga session on the beach!

For me, some of the biggest highlights were getting a cheap beachside massage, visiting San Pancho for the day, exploring several fabulous cocktail bars and tacos al pastor stands, shopping for beautiful home decor, and enjoying a Chocobanana topped with coconut!

There are so many things to do in Sayulita that it’s hard to choose just a few but in my opinion, the best things to do in Sayulita are to learn to surf , go whale-watching , visit the lesser-known beaches , and take a food tour .

The best free things to do in Sayulita include wandering the colorful streets , relaxing on the beach , and watching sunset from Playa Carricitos.

Adrenaline junkies will love Sayulita because there are so many great adventure activities! A few of my recommendations are ziplining over the beach , hiking , exploring Cerro de la Loca , and exploring in a UZR.

The best day trips from Sayulita are to San Pancho and the Marietas Islands . If you’ll be around for longer than a few days, you might enjoy taking a day trip to Puerto Vallarta or Yelapa.

Learn to Surf

Sayulita first landed on the map as a surfing destination, and decades later, surfing is still THE thing to do here. Experienced surfers love the wild and gnarly waves. However, if you’re a kook or a grom (in other words, a surfing beginner), don’t despair! There are calmer sections of the beach that are ideal for newbies.

There are tons of great opportunities to take a surfing lesson in this area. Typically classes are approximately 1.5-2.5 hours for newbies, and they cost around $50-60 each. This surf lesson has a maximum class size of eight , getting you lots of attention, and this surf lesson works equally well for beginners and intermediates , which is a nice option if you’re a beginner and your friend is more experienced.

And if you’re open to traveling to another town, you can learn to surf in nearby Punta Mita , where the waves are often ideal for lessons. Also, know that some of Sayulita’s beginning classes may move you to Punta Mita if the waves are too big that day.

Explore Sayulita’s Colorful Streets

The streets of Sayulita are so bright and cheery, it’s almost impossible to have a bad time here. If it’s your first time here, just wander around and take in the colors and scenery. The downtown area is walkable, but golf carts are available for rent if you’d like.

Just keep an eye on the cobblestones. I took a spectacular wipeout in Sayulita one morning, my leg shooting forward like I was Elvis. (A kind man saw me fall and invited me into his restaurant to wash my hands. I love Mexico!)

Don’t miss Slap Street, where hundreds of vibrant flags are strung up above the street. This rainbow-decorated street near the main road is full of fantastic restaurants and shops, and it’s also a major draw to tourists since posing here makes for such a good photo op. Though if you’re looking to avoid crowds, there are several other streets that sport colorful flags.

If you’re in the Flag Street area, you’ll also want to make a stop at the Chocobanana stand, right across the street. This is an iconic location in Sayulita that’s sure to make every tourist checklist, selling frozen bananas dipped in chocolate. Get one covered in coconut to up the tropical factor!

Rows of chairs with umbrellas in front of a beach with big waves.

Get a Massage on the Beach

I love getting cheap massages when I travel — especially when you can hear the ocean waves! It’s a cheap and lovely way to pamper yourself. How cheap? You can usually get an hourlong massage for around $20, which is likely a fraction of what you’d pay in your home country.

I especially recommend a massage after a surf lesson, which is one of the best ways to recover. Surfing works every muscle you have, even the ones you rarely use!

You won’t have to walk far to get one either, as massage therapists typically come up to tourists advertising their massages. Know that the cheap massages right by the beach are no-frills — think rows of cots, no privacy, and shimmying out of your bathing suit underneath a blanket.

If you want a more private or upmarket experience, go to one of the high-end spas in town. This will cost closer to typical American prices.

A frozen banana on a stick topped with chocolate and shredded coconut.

Go on a Sayulita Food Tour

Food tours are one of my favorite things to do in Mexico, from Guanajuato to Mexico City — and Sayulita happens to have a fabulous collection of food tours! A guide will bring you around town, tasting everything from tacos and tequila to chilaquiles, desserts, and perhaps even some grasshoppers.

There are tours covering everything from street food to booze to brunch, but one that’s good to start with is this taco and beverage food crawl. Enjoy local favorites and learn about how these dishes grew to popularity in the Nayarit region.

If you want drinks to go with your dinner, there’s the Eat, Drink & Explore Sayulita tour , which pairs its meals with stops for traditional Mexican spirits, like tequila and mezcal.

And if you’re more of a morning person, you might enjoy The Food of My People , which is a brunch tour and cultural experience. A nice option, especially since many visitors don’t know much about Mexican breakfasts.

Take a Mexican Cooking Class

Souvenirs are one thing — but I think one of the nicest things you can do is making your loved ones a recipe you learned on your trip. And who doesn’t love Mexican food? Sayulita happens to have tons of Mexican cooking classes.

The Viva México cooking class is a great option that will walk you through the creation of an entire dinner menu. You’ll learn to make fresh salsa and enchiladas, and drinks like margaritas and palomas to match.

If you like privacy or have a small group, you can take a private Mexican cooking class that focuses on other traditional dishes like chile relleno and frijoles fritos. The instructor will come to you and teach you in the kitchen of your Airbnb or rental apartment.

Shop for Souvenirs in Sayulita

I loved shopping in Sayulita. This town is full of boutiques boasting colorful souvenirs, especially clothing and homewares. These shops can be a bit on the pricey side by Mexican standards, but they have beautiful items.

In my opinion, some of the best items to purchase in Sayulita are tiles, textiles, art, clothing, jewelry, and home decor. Pillow covers are lovely and fold down nicely in your luggage; shadow boxes filled with jovial skeletons are a where-did-you-get-THAT?! conversation piece.

There are many extremely talented craftsmen in Sayulita, which makes this one of the best places to pick up handmade and authentic Mexican artisan goods. I left Sayulita with four handmade tiles featuring skeletons dancing, drinking, and having fun. They rest on my coffee table in Prague today.

There are also plenty of markets and street vendors selling cheaper souvenirs.

Visit Sayulita’s Lesser-Known Beaches

Most people head to Sayulita’s main beach, Playa Sayulita, to get a taste of sun and sand. But these beaches tend to be more for surfers than swimmers, and they’re crowded with beach hawkers trying to sell you things.

Solution: head to one of the quieter beaches! If you want to explore a hidden gem and find the best beaches in the area, you might enjoy a visit to Playa Mal Paso or Playa Patzcuarito.

Playa de los Muertos is another well-loved spot, and it’s conveniently located near Sayulita Beach, but offers a more secluded experience in a stunning cove.

Go Horseback Riding

If you want to spend some time on the beaches in a totally unique way, look into horseback riding in Sayulita. You’ll never forget riding a beautiful horse through the sand as the waves crash beside you.

This horseback riding tour is one of the top-rated activities in Sayulita, and it includes time riding along the beach as well as the jungle. You’ll get to experience both sides of Sayulita’s breathtaking nature and landscapes with a wonderful animal companion.

This is a great romantic activity for couples but works well with a group of friends, too. Whatever you do, be sure to take photos of the beach lit up at golden hour, the ocean shimmering as surfers rise and fall in the waves.

Go Ziplining Through the Jungle

Channel your inner Tarzan as you soar through the jungle canopy on a series of ziplines. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush on your trip to Mexico, this is a fun option!

It’s also an absolute must if you want to get a bird’s eye view of the gorgeous surrounding areas of Sayulita. You’ll get incredible views of both the rainforest, the Pacific Ocean, and the mountains as well, all while having the time of your life. You may even get some incredible sightings of local wildlife, like alligators, donkeys, bulls, and peacocks.

This ziplining experience in Sayulita includes all the safety equipment and even a tequila tasting at the end of your journey.

Explore the “Mountain of the Crazy” by ATV

Another activity for the adrenaline junkie traveler is an ATV tour. Riding around dunes and the trails of Cerro de la Loca (Mountain of the Crazy) is sure to be a blast.

You’ll go through Sayulita and the mountain for two hours, allowing you plenty of time to soak up the stunning scenery and lush landscape. You’ll also be led by expert guides who know this area like the back of their hand.

This is the top-rated ATV tour in Sayulita. People age six and up can join the excursion, so the whole family can have fun zipping through the jungle and village. Plus, the complete experience is topped off with an opportunity to sample some local tequila at the end of the tour. (Maybe not the six-year-olds on that one.)

Go Hiking with a Yoga Class

I love pairing hiking with yoga! Gentle stretching and deep breathing is the perfect way to center yourself after an energetic hike. More people should do this, and there’s a hiking and yoga excursion in Sayulita worth trying.

As you hike through the jungle, you’ll enjoy the lush landscape and spot birds and butterflies. Next, get in touch with yourself with some mindful, meditative exercises and stretches. The steady crash of the waves makes the perfect backdrop for your deep breathing.

Even better, this experience is a steal. It starts at only $23 a person, and there are private booking options available as well.

Go Hiking (Just Hiking)

If you just want the hike without the yoga, go for it! You can navigate through the beautiful scenery of Sayulita and commune with nature.

Plus, there are different hiking experiences for you to have since there’s so much variety in the landscapes of Sayulita.

The Monkey Mountain Hike will have you navigate up to striking views of Bahia de Banderas. Along the way, you’ll birdwatch and spot exotic plants. Plus, you can schedule the hike for sunrise, sunset, or morning, depending on your preference.

The Hidden Trail Beach Hike has you explore the jungle before arriving at one of the area’s beautiful beaches. You’ll be able to swim if the waves permit, or just sit on the sand and soak up the sun.

Both of these hikes come with a local guide who knows the best spots for photos.

Explore the Jungles and Beaches by RZR UTV jeep

Maybe the best way to explore the mountains and rough terrain is to travel off-road in a utility terrain vehicle. Riding in a UTV is a bit easier than trekking through the jungle, but still provides the same, if not better, gorgeous views.

Plus, UTVs are a whole lot of fun. You can go off the beaten path and explore hidden wonders while getting a little bit of a thrill along the way.

This experience comes with equipment like helmets and goggles, as well as bottled water to keep you hydrated.

Go Whale Watching

Did you know that the Bay of Banderas has some of the best whale watching in the world? I had no idea until this year! It was almost as good as Antarctica . So often I saw whales without much of an effort. They’re just everywhere .

Whale watching season in Sayulita is between December and April, the months when humpback whales migrate south to this part of Mexico.

This whale watching trip from Sayulita to the Marietas Islands takes in many forms of wildlife beyond whales, including tropical fish, giant turtles, other marine animals, and many species of birds.

Go Scuba Diving

If you’ve never gone scuba diving and have the time to invest, you can learn in Sayulita . This beginner scuba experience is led by a professional instructor who will teach you everything you need to know to scuba safely.

Once you’ve taken a class, or if you’ve gone diving in the past, you’ll be ready to visit some of the incredible dive sites in the area. Los Arcos is a great place to go if you are not particularly experienced, but will still be exciting for those with lots of dives under their belt as well. You can witness octopi, eels, rays, and more!

Marietas Islands National Park offers another wonderful site in Banderas Bay, full of caves to explore, and tropical fish, dolphins, and other sea creatures to watch. This excursion , for experienced scuba divers, is completely inclusive of equipment, lunch, and transportation.

Watch the Sunset at Playa Carricitos

If you’re looking for a free activity full of breathtaking views, visit Playa Carricitos in the evening. As you watch the colors of the sun setting, you’ll get to enjoy nature at its best without spending a penny.

It’s a bit of a trek to get to this beach — about a 45- to 60-minute walk west of central Sayulita. The journey will take you through the jungle and past rural homes and farms before you arrive at beautiful Playa Carritcitos.

This beach is a true hidden gem. It’s secluded and stunning — just know that there’s nothing here, not even a restroom. Pee before you go!

Dine Out in Style

Sayulita is home to an impressive culinary scene, especially considering the town’s size! This is one of the biggest differences I noticed between 2011 and 2022. You won’t want for great restaurants here, and the diversity of cuisines offered is surprising.

One of my favorite spots was El Tiburon , a high-end restaurant dishing out fiery shrimp aguachile and Angus tenderloin ceviche along with some funky mixed drinks.

Tierra Viva is an excellent spot for a nice dinner. They offer innovative twists on various Mexican classics to create a unique and delicious menu. Their dishes are influenced by flavors from Oaxaca, Puebla, and Veracruz, as well as the Caribbean.

Achara is a great option when you need a brief break from all the Mexican goodness. They offer amazing Thai food in a really nice setting. They’re one of the best restaurants in town, so you won’t regret grabbing some curry or spring rolls when you just can’t eat another taco.

Finally — be sure to try out the tacos al pastor stands throughout town. Every Sayulita resident has their favorite!

Enjoy Sayulita Nightlife

Some Mexican towns aren’t my bag in terms of nightlife, but Sayulita really gets it right. This isn’t the place you go for pulsating clubs — instead, there are lots of smaller bars. Some serve craft cocktails, some have swings for bar seats, and some have wildly decorated interiors. It’s loud, but it’s more chill than crazy.

I loved El Barrilito , with its mix of quirky and intense cocktails, served to a background of early 2000s hip-hop. They even have games if you want to chill out and enjoy yourself.

If you’re a beer person, you’ll want to check out Cervecería Yambak . This is the place to go any time of the night if you want a really good beer in a fun atmosphere, and they’ll have some interesting brews you’ve never heard of.

You’ll know Atico when you see it — this bar is famous for its outdoor bar seating on swings! This is a very popular spot and you’ll often hear live music nearby. Get here early if you want one of the swing seats. They also offer hookahs if that’s your thing.

If you love stunning interiors, be sure to check out Xochi . This is a restaurant that feels more like a lounge in the late evening, and the interior is wild and colorful. Get a seat by the edge of the window for views over Sayulita Plaza.

And if you’d like something casual, fun, and local, check out Aaleyah’s . This is the bar for an authentic Mexican night out, and they serve up great wings!

Get Professional Photos Taken in Sayulita

Sure, you have photos from Sayulita, but wouldn’t you rather have NICE photos? Getting professional photos taken is something that I love to splurge on on my trips.

If you love your travel photos but wish you had a few really nice shots, consider hiring a pro. They know the best spots in time and the best times of day to shoot. Most of all, they know how to make you look your best.

You can take a look at what a pro photographer in Sayulita offers here.

Take a Day Trip from Sayulita to San Pancho

Since you’re already in the area, why not take a taxi and visit one of the nearby towns, like San Pancho? This little beach town is a bit more low-key than Sayulita, so it’s great for a quiet day exploring a less touristy area.

Plus, San Pancho’s beach is actually much better suited for swimming than the one in Sayulita. (Sayulita is great for surfing, not as great for swimming.)

If you do visit San Pancho (the town’s actual name is San Francisco, though no one calls in that), I highly recommend taking this bike tour . Charlie and I took this tour, and our guide was so lovely, sharing stories about San Pancho’s creative history and taking us to really cool spots.

We finished with a stop at a cool devil-themed bar (seriously) and had so much fun, we all got tacos together for dinner.

To get to San Pancho, grab one of the taxis on Sayulita Plaza. It’s a 10-minute journey and shouldn’t cost you more than $15 or so.

Visit the Marieta Islands

The Marieta Islands are a nice option for a day trip from Sayulita. There are several day trip choices for cruising around the islands, but all of them will show you beautiful nature.

For instance, you can opt for a full-day tour . This will be a 7-hour excursion that offers you breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks. You can choose to paddleboard, kayak, or just play in the water. You can even go fishing! Plus, all of the equipment is included, so you don’t need to worry about anything.

Alternatively, one of the best options is to sail out and then focus on snorkeling all day! You can take a boat ride out to the islands before hopping in the ocean and viewing the beautiful underwater scenery. Observe tropical fish and the occasional jaunty sea turtle through crystal-clear water.

Note — if you want to visit the famous “hidden beach” of the Marieta Islands, pictured above, those trips are strictly limited and depart only from Puerto Vallarta. This one, which I did and enjoyed , departs from the Marina Vallarta neighborhood close to the airport.

A mostly empty beach with clear teal water, mountains in the background.

Visit Yelapa

If you will be staying in Sayulita for an extended period of time, you may want to take some day trips that are a bit further out. A trip to Yelapa, a remote fishing village in the region, is a nice place to explore.

I love Yelapa. It’s such a chilled out town. Nearly everyone accesses it only by water. It’s got a nice beach. And ladies on the beach sell you the famous Yelapa pies!

This is a really special Fortunately, there is an all-inclusive trip that can take you there . This is a luxurious journey as well, since your food and drinks will be provided by the charter, and you’ll have the opportunity to use all of their supplies to enjoy the water!

Please note that Yelapa is quite far from Sayulita town. It’s way on the other side of Puerto Vallarta. For that reason, if you’re visiting both Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta in the same trip, it would be a better use of your time to visit Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta.

A beach lined with tall white apartment buildings and palm trees, lots of people playing in the water.

Visit Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is the ultimate city on Mexico’s Pacific coast! I had a great time living here over the winter! It makes a nice day trip from Sayulita if you’re craving a bigger city.

Puerto Vallarta started out as a fishing village and has grown substantially over time. It became popular with tourists in the 1960s after celebrities like Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor began visiting. Since then, it’s become a major travel hotspot, and especially a huge LGBTQ travel destination.

The Zona Romantica neighborhood is where all the action is — think nightlife (especially gay nightlife), easy beach access, and excellent shopping. If you’re looking to dine well, though, check out one of the fabulous restaurants in up-and-coming Versalles.

A long stretch of beach with people sunbathing and vendors selling things.

Best Time to Visit Sayulita

Sayulita is a popular travel destination year-round. Mexico’s Pacific coast isn’t as prone to hurricanes as Cancún and the Yucatán.

The busiest time of year with the nicest weather is during the winter months: December to March. Winter is both high season and dry season in Sayulita.

The summer months tend to be the rainy season, but the rain storms tend to be short and intense, and you can still have a good time.

You’ll find peak crowds and pricing during the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

How to Get to Sayulita, Mexico

The closest airport to Sayulita is in Puerto Vallarta (PVR), which has direct flights to several American cities, from Chicago to Los Angeles to Newark to Vancouver. From the airport you can take a taxi or bus to Sayulita.

Ubers are not permitted at Puerto Vallarta Airport; you’ll need to cross the bridge at the end of the airport to summon an Uber. This should cost $25-50 depending on whether there’s surge pricing. The drive takes just under an hour; buses are cheap (around $2) but take closer to 90 minutes.

Another option is booking an airport transfer , which is pricey but can be a comfy option for larger groups.

To get to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta or other nearby cities, there are bus networks up and down the coast.

You can occasionally get an Uber in Sayulita, but don’t count on it. I wasn’t able to get one. To get a cab ride back to the airport or Puerto Vallarta, use the InDriver app, a popular Mexico rideshare app where drivers bid for your service (just know that the less they bid, the worse the car, and the quality is below Uber’s standards). You pay the driver in cash.

A line of restaurants including the bright yellow Chocobanana restaurant.

How Much Time to Spend in Sayulita

How long do you need to spend in Sayulita? I think the biggest factors are where you’re staying and how you feel about the party scene. If you’re staying in the heart of the city, you’ve got to be okay with the noise going on until late.

However, if you’re staying further out — especially on one of the beaches — you might have a quieter atmosphere and enjoy making this the place where you spend most of your time. You won’t have to worry about the noise out here.

For me, visiting for two nights and staying a 10-minute walk from downtown was perfect. That was the perfect amount of party. I’d be up for staying longer if I were staying further away, especially if it were on the beach.

Where to Stay in Sayulita, Mexico

Sayulita has excellent accommodation at lots of different price points. Yet like many places in Mexico, prices have increased steadily as it’s become more of a popular destination.

Keep in mind that staying in the heart of town will be very noisy at night, and staying further back may be much quieter, but you might have to walk up in the hills. Research carefully before you book.

Here are a few top-rated places to stay:

Hotel Villa Los Corales — I stayed here. This is a lovely mid-range hotel on a hill with gorgeous views and a rooftop pool. Rooms are very spacious. Walking up the steep hill at the end of the night was a bit annoying, but overall we were happy staying here.

Selina Sayulita — Selina is a chain of hotels geared toward digital nomads. I loved the one in San Miguel de Allende. The one in Sayulita is central (re: LOUD at night), with both dorms and private rooms, a big pool, yoga classes, and of course a coworking space. If you want to meet people, THIS is where you stay.

Hotel Ysuri Sayulita — This is right on the corner of the main beach, but far enough away from the loud parts of town. A best of both worlds place to stay.

Hotel Boutique Siete Lunas — Now THIS is a peaceful beach retreat, removed from the craziness. (Multiple reviews say “zero noise.”) Yet you can still walk downtown if you want to.

Travel Insurance for Mexico

One last note — it’s absolutely vital to have travel insurance before traveling to Mexico.  If you get sick or injured on your trip, if you get robbed, or even if you have to be flown home for more care, travel insurance will protect you from financial ruin.  I use and recommend World Nomads for trips to Mexico.

Travel insurance will help you in your hour of need if you come down with appendicitis in Sayulita or fall and break a bone while on a bike tour, and if your flights get canceled due to bad weather, you can get accommodation and new flights paid for.

As always, be sure to read your policy carefully and make sure it’s a fit for you.  See what World Nomads covers here.

Is Sayulita Worth It?

Hell yeah, Sayulita is worth it! Know what it is when you’re going in. It’s very touristy. It’s very developed. It might not be the traditional small Mexican village or ramshackle bohemian hotspot it used to be.

But man, is Sayulita fun. I miss it.

I’m writing this on a cold and foggy November day in Prague, and I can’t tell you how much I’m craving a return trip to Sayulita!

I hope you go to Sayulita — and end up having a fantastic time!

21 Things to Do in Sayulita, Mexico

07/19/2023 by Kristin Addis 5 Comments

An hour northwest of Puerto Vallarta on the west coast of Mexico, Sayulita is often called a pueblo mágico, or “magic town.” It’s a lively, hip beach town full of surfers and friendly locals cruising around in golf carts.

Often recognized for the colorful art strung above the streets, Sayulita is becoming an ever more popular place to visit thanks to its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful natural setting, and abundance of cool things to do. Here are some awesome activities to try there:

One of the best things about Sayulita is the art all around town. From the streamers hanging over little roadways branching out from the town square to the murals by talented artists, Sayulita is quirky and colorful.

I loved walking through town and finding new murals and streamers every time I went out.

2. Pamper Yourself

Getting a massage or spa treatment is significantly less expensive in Sayulita than it is almost anywhere in the USA or even in other touristy places in Mexico. A massage will run about $25-40 per hour here and you can also find good deals on facials and other treatments.

On the beach, you might find women offering massages, but you can also check out one of the many spas around town.  7 Spa  comes highly recommended and offers a variety of massages and spa treatments to choose from.

3. Enjoy the Beach

things to do in sayulita, mexico

Sayulita’s main beach, where the surf waves are and plenty of hawkers and bars, was not my favorite part. But you don’t have to go far to find quiet places to lay your towel down and go for a swim. I recommend turning right and walking up the beach until you find your perfect spot.

4. Learn About Huichol Culture

Long before Mexico was colonized by the Spanish, the area where present-day Sayulita was inhabited by the Huichol people who were descendants of the Aztecs. Many generations later, the Huichol people continue to wear their traditional red and white textiles and are incredible artisans. They are known for their intricate beadwork and art, which is sold around town.

One of the best places in Sayulita to learn more about Huichol art and cultural traditions is the  Tierra Huichol Art Gallery . There you’ll find colorful beaded art pieces inspired by indigenous cosmology.  This walking tour of Sayulita and San Pancho  provides the opportunity to admire the Huichol crafts on the streets.

5. Join a Yoga Retreat or Class

things to do in sayulita, mexico

The chill, laid-back atmosphere of Sayulita makes the area a great place for a yoga retreat. While there are countless retreats ranging in length all around Sayulita, I adored  Haramara , where you can choose the length of your retreat, stay in gorgeous cabañas, and enjoy clean, whole food prepared for you daily. The Haramara property grounds are simply stunning and would make the perfect setting for some much-needed rejuvenation. Depending on when you go and the accommodations you prefer, prices range from $215 to $390 per night.

I attended a weeklong  women’s retreat  there and while I thought it was magical, it’s important to know that the villas don’t have walls. You’re totally immersed in nature and will see many birds, butterflies, and even iguanas. There’s no electricity, either, and nights are lived by lamplight. I never felt unsafe and loved the experience – get out of your comfort zone a bit!

Or, if you’re simply looking for a few yoga classes, check out  Paraiso Yoga , which offers between one and four classes per day in all different yoga styles. The studio even has a cool online deal where you can purchase seven days of unlimited yoga classes for just $55, which would be perfect if you’re taking a weeklong trip to Sayulita!

Things to Do in Sayulita, Mexico

Sayulita is a surfer’s paradise and is great for beginners. Taking a surf lesson is easy and fun, especially with one of the reputable companies in town.  Lunazul Surfing , for example, is one of the best in Sayulita for board rentals, surf lessons, and surfing excursions to other spots on the coast. The family-owned company has been praised by publications like  Travel + Leisure  and  Lonely Planet  for friendliness, location, equipment, accommodations, and knowledge. For a 1.5-hour lesson, prices range from $45 to $65. If you want to get private lessons separately only with your group of friends or family, you can  get them here .

7. Release Turtles

At one time, turtle eggs were a sought-after food item. After many years of being over-harvested, the sea turtle population has suffered a drastic decline.  Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita  is working hard to preserve these magnificent animals by releasing the recently-hatched turtles safely.

You can attend the release of the turtles at sunset between January and June or volunteer with the organization to learn more about their preservation efforts.

8. Islas Marietas Tour

Things to Do in Sayulita, Mexico

The Marietas Islands (Islas Marietas) are small, uninhabited islands off the coast of Nayarit, the state of which Sayulita is a part.  Take a tour  of the islands where you can explore clear waters, great beaches, and coves.  Some tours include snorkeling  and others include whale-watching, but most are only half-day excursions departing from and returning to Sayulita.

9. Go Whale Watching

Between mid-December and the beginning of April, you can expect to see whales off the coast of Sayulita. During this time of year, humpback, blue, and gray whales migrate to the area to enjoy the warm waters of the Nayarit coast. The most reputable company with the best ratings is La Orca de Sayulita, which has a strong focus on conservation.

You can book a tour  here .

10. Jungle Hike

things to do in sayulita, mexico

WildMex  offers another cool activity: a jungle hike. Hike through the jungle from Sayulita to the neighboring town of  San Pancho . This trek will allow you to get out into the beautiful natural surroundings of the area and see some cool flora, fauna, and wildlife. Plus, all the profits from these tours are used to create new trails and maintain existing ones! Book a spot on a group tour (where you’ll meet some other cool travelers) for $85.

11. Horseback Ride

things to do in sayulita, mexico

Hop on a trusty steed and ride through the jungle as well as along the beach to explore even more of Sayulita. The horseback ride itself would be a ton of fun, plus it is a great way to get out and about!  Here’s a tour  that offers a quiet horse ride through the beach, jungles, and village of Higuera Blanca. You will also be escorted by cowboys during your tour, how cool is that?! Ride horses are distinguished by their calm character, being well-fed, and being kept in prime shape, so don’t worry, even if it’ll be your first time.

If you’re really feeling adventurous, also take one of  Rancho Mi Chaparrita’s thrilling ATV tours , where you’ll be splashing, crashing, and cruising through the ocean, jungle, and Sayulita town on a four-wheeler. A single ATV costs $112 for about a two-hour trip, complete with fruit and beverages. Beware, you might get muddy, but it’ll be one awesome ride!

13. Zip Line

things to do in sayulita, mexico

Among Tulum’s other adventures is  a jungle zip line tour with ocean view .  With 10 zip lines and a suspended bridge on the mountains, you will spend 2 hours marveling at the incredible views of the jungle, mountains, and beach. The cherry on top? You get to enjoy a tequila tasting at the end of your tour!

14. Mountain Bike Through the Jungle

As you can see by now, there are plenty of opportunities to get your adrenaline fix in Sayulita. Another one of them is taking a mountain bike guided tour through the jungle. WildMex has  guided tours  that range from novice to expert, mellow dirt roads to Technical Singletrack.

These tours are an epic way to get your adventure fix while visiting Sayulita.

15. Shop ‘Til You Drop

things to do in sayulita, mexico

Back in town, Sayulita has a ton of great shopping options. There are plenty of stores all around town with cute, unique clothing options, though they can be pricey. For more of a local feel, browsing markets can be a fun activity to get a sense of the town, starting with Sayulita’s riverside “hippie market” full of colorful, handmade goods and crafts. Stroll through rows of tables topped with fun, unique items, and pick out a pair of earrings or beach blanket to remember your trip by.

On Fridays, check out the Sayulita Farmers’ Market, where local vendors sell delicious baked goods and other foods. Then, on Sundays, head over to the  tianguis , another open-air market with clothing, textiles, and local artwork.

16. Watch Street Performers

Sayulita Plaza is known for almost always having street performers showing off various tricks. On any given evening in this main square of the town, you might catch fire dancers, jugglers, clowns, singers, and other performers. This is quite common in many places throughout Mexico, but Sayulita tends to attract some more out-of-the-box performers that you’ll definitely want to stop and watch for a while.

17. Escape to San Pancho

things to do in sayulita, mexico

I admit, the first thing I wanted to do upon reaching Sayulita was leave.

From what I’ve heard, it has changed a lot in the past few years and morphed from a quiet, artsy hippie town to more of a tourist spot. It’s perfect for those who want to drive around golf carts and party in bars, but that’s not me. In time I did find the quieter, more beautiful parts of town and came to enjoy the surrounding areas, but I still liked Playa San Pancho in San Francisco , just a 20-minute drive north, much better.

If you want peace and tranquility and are OK with skipping the bars, head to  San Pancho . I adored it.

18. Visit the Cemetery and Playa de los Muertos

You might be wondering why a cemetery is on this list, but hear me out. Cemeteries are hugely important in Mexican culture and are viewed differently than they are in many other parts of the world. Here, cemeteries are gathering places and are colorfully decorated to celebrate loved ones who have passed on.

The cemetery in Sayulita is unique because of how close it is to the sandy beach. In fact, the closest beach to the cemetery is called “Playa de los Muertos” or  beach of the dead . Don’t be alarmed as it’s not the kind of spooky place you would expect.

19. Catch a Sunset at Monkey Mountain

Sayulita’s beaches are surrounded by mountains on three sides, making it a great place to get out for a hike. The hike up Monkey Mountain takes about 2 hours and can be booked through  WildMex Surf & Adventure .

The best part of this adventure is reaching the top of the mountain to watch the sunset over the ocean, so make sure to book the afternoon hike!

20. Explore Nearby Beaches

things to do in sayulita, mexico

There are several lovely beaches nearby that you can take a long, hot walk, get lucky with an Uber (there are a few around!), or cruise over with a golf cart to:

  • Playa Escondida/Carricitos – Gorgeous for sunset.
  • Los Muertos Beach near Punta Sayulita.
  • Playa Malpaso near San Pancho (will need a taxi).

One of the best things about traveling in Mexico is the food,  amiright ? It’s hard to beat Mexican food, even when comparing it to the rest of the world, at least in my Southern Californian heart. I adored the food in Sayulita, particularly the following:

  • Yah-Yah Sayulita Cafe: If you’re looking for organic and delicious breakfast food and lunch bowls, plus amazing coffee. Vegan options available.
  • Organi-K : Acai and poke bowl heaven.
  • Maria’s Fish Tacos : Always packed but always delicious. If you’re not feeling fish or there’s no space, there’s a taco place right next door to the right (when facing the restaurant) that is just a counter to order from with some tables outside and DELICIOUS.

Getting There and Around

things to do in sayulita, mexico

Getting to Sayulita can be simple and straightforward and doesn’t have to be expensive. For most people, Puerto Vallarta airport is the starting point.

  • Private car:  The most expensive option would be to take a private car or taxi from the airport to Sayulita, which takes about an hour, but why do that? For example, the shuttle that Haramara offers costs $90 one-way. There are better ways. If you are traveling in a group,  a rental car  might be a good option.
  • Bus:  There is a public bus that you can take, provided that you don’t have much luggage and can speak Spanish, for closer to one dollar. If that is out of your comfort zone, then I highly recommend Uber.
  • Uber:  It only cost me about $24 to get into town using Uber. In order to do this, you’re going to have to walk across the bridge to the other side of the highway. It’s very easy to find, very obvious, and it’s orange. You can’t miss it if you look around for it after walking outside from the arrivals hall. Keep in mind that, once you cross the bridge, you won’t be able to use airport Wi-Fi anymore, so this will only work if you are using a data plan, because it can be a bit chaotic and you might need to communicate with your driver about an exact pickup spot. Still, it would be cheaper to activate your daily $10 data than to take the airport taxi or a private shuttle.

Where to Stay in Sayulita

things to do in sayulita, mexico

There are tons of chic and affordable hotels in Sayulita. Airbnb also offers plenty of choices, but can be hit or miss. Instead, check out this list of the best boutique hotels in Sayulita , which includes many that are locally owned and have incredible hospitality.

Packing for Sayulita

Not sure what to pack for Sayulita? I’ve got you! Here are the essentials that I would bring for a short trip:

  • A  backpack  or  suitcase
  • Packing cubes  for organization
  • An  anti-theft purse  for valuables and documents
  • A  day pack  for any excursions
  • Proof of accommodation and flight out of Mexico (it’s best to have these printed out)
  • Immigration card (you’ll get this at the airport upon arrival in Mexico — do not lose it!)

  • 1 of each:  solid shampoo  and  conditioner

  • 1  power bank  (if you’re going somewhere remote or will be traveling long distances on buses)
  • 1 pair of  wireless headphones
  • 1  going-out dress

  • 1 pair of  sunglasses
  • 1 pair of comfortable  sandals  (that you can also use on the beach)
  • 1 pair of  sneakers

sayulita things to do

Sayulita is a dream destination for solo travelers, especially those who want to branch out and make friends. It’s definitely more of a party town than nearby San Pancho but has quiet nooks where you can find some peace as well. So, when are you heading to Sayulita?

Thank you for your great information on Sayulita! My wife Melanie and I are going there for the first time next week and have a question about Uber. The contact where we are staying said that we can catch an Uber from the airport but that it is extremely difficult to get an Uber from Sayulita returning back to the airport. Was that your experience? It sounds like you did not have any issues with that.

05/04/2022 at 8:32 am

I was able to get one going back but that was pre-pandemic and it may have changed. To catch the uber we had to walk out from the airport and across the street. Hopefully your host explained where to go.

THINGS TO DO IN SAYULITA MEXICO

Where is sayulita mexico located.

Situated in the far south of the Riviera Nayarit, just about 40 kilometers north of Puerto Vallarta and around an hour’s drive from Nuevo Vallarta, Sayulita is a charming town on the west coast, with a hippy surfer vibe. In fact, it has been recently labeled as Magic Town ( Pueblos Magicos ).

It’s also one of the most popular destinations in Mexico for those wishing to spend some time relaxing.

I have stayed a couple of weeks in Sayulita Mexico, and I can tell you the atmosphere is very relaxed and laid-back, and the tranquil vibe of the town is a cherry on top.

However, if you love to party you can find your tribe there as well. Want to do a life-changing yoga retreat ? Sayulita’s got you covered as well.

Love to hike, scuba dive , snorkel or indulge in scrumptious food? Sayulita will take care of you.

The white beaches are perfect for beach lovers, and the town is lined with touristy shops selling trinkets and snacks.

Sayulita beach

The boho-chic culture of Sayulita is also pretty lit, so it’s been gaining popularity as a party town as well.

The food scene is one of the most eclectic in Mexico ranging from vegan menus to Mexican flavors and international cuisine.

All things considered, Sayulita is definitely among the top destinations of Mexico and worth a visit at least once in your life.

25 Best Things to do in Sayulita Mexico

So without further ado let’s cover all the amazing things to do in Sayulita, Places to visit, and beaches to discover.

In this section of the post, I am going to include also the top tours as the main things to do in Sayulita or from Sayulita.

In fact, this quaint beach town can also serve as a base for some incredible day trips in the nearby area.

1. Hit the spectacular beaches

The town of Sayulita was founded by American surfers looking for the perfect spot back in the 70s, so you can guess how stunning the beaches here would be.

Such being the case, visiting these gorgeous beaches near Sayulita is definitely one of the must-dos of traveling to this Pueblo Magico in Mexico .

The beaches are also super popular for their surfing experience, so you can try your hand at it or simply feel the thrill just by watching others surf.

Just keep in mind that Sayulita beach, which is the main beach, is very crowded most of the time, so it’s not perfect for a peaceful visit to enjoy the beauty of the beaches here.

You can find plenty of other secret beaches close by (or not so secret)!

Though, if you’re looking to be in the center of all the activities, to mingle and party, the main beach is the best place for it.

Playa Carricito Sayulita - surrounded by palms

Further on in this post, I will talk about more beaches in Sayulita and its surroundings.

The closest one is Playa de los Muertos (or Los Muertos Beach, translate beach of the dead), a secluded beach in a protected bay where you can have easy access to the water and a shaded area under palm trees.

You can also find local vendors selling delicious grilled food and beverages, making Los Muertos beach an ideal place to hang out and enjoy the beach life in Sayulita.

La rustica Restaurant

2. Treat your tastebuds to the local cuisine

Many things make Sayulita one of the best destinations in Mexico, and the local cuisine here is definitely one of those.

The restaurants found in town offer such a delightful variety, and may also focus on healthy foods for the yoga lovers that flock to Sayulita every year.

Since Sayulita was originally a fishing town, you can bet the seafood here is going to be mind-blowing.

But vegetarian and vegan options, as well as international cuisines, the traditional tacos ( don’t miss the delicious fish tacos) are also offered by a decent number of restaurants, so trying out the eclectic food scene in Sayulita is part of the experience.

My favorite restaurants in Sayulita are:

✔️ Barracuda for great seafood in a nice environment – more upscale eatery.

✔️ Taqueria Los Reyes – for delicious and affordable tacos and quesadillas

Taqueria Los Reyes

3. Try the memorable holistic healing experience offered here

As I mentioned earlier, Sayulita was initially a small and serene fishing town. The tranquil charm of its old days is still intact despite it becoming a trendy, hip destination in Mexico.

That’s why so many people come here for yoga and other wellness experiences.

If you want to put the unforgettable holistic healing experiences of Sayulita on your bucket list, there is a great place called Haramara Retreat right on the edge of town.

It’s surrounded by a lush green jungle and overlooks the bay, making for the perfect place to rejuvenate your mind and body.

4. Go shopping

Shopping may not be something many think of when traveling so far for a memorable vacation, but it’s shopping in Sayulita is indeed a recommended experience.

Everything is within walking distance, so shopping doesn’t take a lot of effort, and the variety of handmade artwork is very appealing. Also, you get to bring back the coolest memorabilia from your trip to Sayulita.

The original artwork and crafts found in Sayulita revolve around the traditional colors and cultural authenticity of the region, especially the Huichol form of art which has its origins here and is quite prominent because of its fashion and jewelry trends.

Shopping in Sayulita

Below are a few shop recommendations for a grand shopping day.

► Revolucion del Sueno – If you’re looking for artful clothing, accessories, and crafts, Revolucion de Sueno is a great place to hit. The owners go out of their way to create a unique and unforgettable shopping experience for you, and there are plenty of remarkable things on offer here!

► Evoke The Spirit – Founded by Brittney Borjson—a New Yorker who fell in love with Sayulita on her visit to the town—Evoke The Spirit is a one-of-a-kind art shop.

The owner works with local Huichol artists to create unique and sophisticated pieces, and you can see them working in the shop!

This is a shop that I highly recommend if you want to find some extraordinarily authentic Huichol artwork.

The designs also have a unique touch to them that you won’t find anywhere else.

Shopping in Sayulita

► Artefakto – As the name suggests, this shop is the go-to place for adorable artifacts from different traditions of Mexico.

From pillowcases, blankets, and shawls to rugs, bags, and hammocks, you will find everything handmade and artfully embroidered here.

Obviously, these are only a few of the beautiful shops you will find in Sayulita. Just take a walk around town and you will see it yourself.

5. Watch the breathtaking sunsets of Sayulita from Playa Carricitos (Carricitos beach)

In Sayulita, you can watch some of the most amazing sunsets in Mexico, just like in La Paz or Puerto Vallarta , all very special places at this time of the day.

Make sure you don’t miss them when you’re here! Watching the sun dive into the endless ocean right in front of your eyes is a magical experience.

You can either take a walk to Carricitos Beach, a secret beach located a kilometer or so from the main beach, and watch the sunset from there, or go on a hiking tour and experience the unforgettable view from the top of the hills.

Sunset from Sayulita

6. Go on a hike to the Monkey Mountain

The Monkey Mountain in Sayulita is a remarkable hiking location and quite popular but it’s not the only one. Sayulita is basically embraced by lush hills and slopes overlooking the blue ocean with an incredible variety of trails waiting for you to explore.

However, Monkey Mountain is the most popular for the spectacular views you get to see along the way.

If you don’t want to get lost book your tour with a local guide who knows where to take you 🙂

DISCLAIMER – Also, keep in mind that this hike is not for the faint of heart. It’s only 1h 30 minutes but it’s all on a steep trail and ends with difficult boulders.

7. Joing a milder hike with a yoga class by Wanderlust Sayulita

As I mentioned there are many other hikes available in Sayulita. So you can enjoy other local tours where a knowledgeable guide can take you around and show you the local flora and fauna.

I went on a hike with Wanderlust Sayulita and I had a blast. Diane and Jairo, the founder are adorable and will make you feel like going out with a group of friends.

Besides, their groups are small so it will be easy to mingle with the other participants.

SAYULITA HIKING AND YOGA EXPERIENCE

It’s just 3-hour trip but so energizing and you can choose between the morning or the afternoon hike. I did it in the afternoon and loved it because I got to see the sunset.

The hike is just 45 minutes and it takes you to a beautiful deserted beach where you will enjoy some free time before a  relaxing 45-minute yoga class at the healing sound of the waves.

To get back to town it will only be a 30-minute walk in the jungle.

Watch my video on the beautiful hike in Sauyilita

8. Go ziplining

Another great experience in the mountains is the 2-Km long zipline tour .

The ziplines go over the entire jungle of Sierra Madre, and the bay is also in view, so I don’t even need to mention how amazing it must be up there.

The region between the rainforest nature reserve in Punta de Mita to the Pacific Ocean is also covered in the zipline tour, so the famous Puerto Vallarta views are part of the experience too!

You will be flying through the jungle, above treetops, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h with a height of 125 meters above sea level.

Meanwhile, you will be able to enjoy incredible panoramic views over the Bay of Nayarit!

After the adrenaline rush, you will then reach a great Beach Club near Playa de los Muertos after your Tequila tasting in which you can appreciate the unique characteristics of the Agave drink

You can ask for a pick-up service in Sayulita, but the tour leaves from Bucerias, so keep that in mind.

Zipline

9. Mountain bike through the lush green jungle

Seeing the jungle from above is stunning, but biking through it is a different kind of experience entirely. If you’re one for an adrenaline rush, you will love the mountain biking tours offered through the jungle.

The tours also have the local beaches and villages on the itinerary, so it’s a great way to explore the region’s remarkable natural abundance.

There’s just one small hitch, these tours are only available between November and July, so you might not find them if you visit during the other months of the year.

Here below I am going to share a few tours that I found very appealing:

► Sayulita Jungle Mountain Biking

2 hrs experience hosted by Javier ⭐ 4.93 (55 reviews)

Here is a review:

“This is a MUST DO tour for anyone with MTB experience. I mountain bike in the Canadian Rockies , and these are legit mountain bike trails! You start with a climb to a beautiful view, then come down trails that are fast and flowy! FYI – I would not recommend this tour to anyone that doesn’t have some experience biking on trails. The rental bikes were also excellent !”

JUNGLE BIKE TOUR LANDSCAPE

► Hidden Beaches on Mountain Bike (San Pancho)

3 hrs experience hosted by Samuel ⭐ 4.97 ( 64 reviews)

“Samuel is a great storyteller and takes great pride in the local culture & community. We went on a fantastic MTB adventure through San Pancho, the surrounding jungle hills and a few glorious beaches. We enjoyed our experience so much and are looking forward to more experiences with Samuel !”

10. Spend a day unwinding

The last couple of things to do on this list are proof that Sayulita is perfect for a lot of adventures, so it’s a good idea to squeeze some me-time into the mix to balance things out. Fortunately, Sayulita is also just the place to kick back and relax.

You can take a message, read a book by the seaside, or spend time chilling in a hammock surrounded by revitalizing nature.

11. Visit the Islas Marietas

Las Islas Marietas are a wonder of nature . They’re famous for the hidden beach that was formed after volcanic eruptions here.

The beach looks like a piece of heaven on earth, and you can only get to it by swimming after the boat takes you as close as possible.

The site had been closed off to tourists for a while because of the declining nature of the region caused by too many people visiting it.

But don’t worry, it’s open for tourism again so you can visit it.

Though, the price is many times higher now to keep the number of visitors low.

If you can afford the fee, it’s definitely worth the money and recommended.

Snorkel in the Marieta Islands National Park MOST POPULAR TOUR FROM SAYULITA (our pick)

12. Scuba Diving excursions in Marietas Islands National Park

Although this is one of the activities on this list that you can do only as a certified diver, scuba diving in the Marieta islands is a wonderful experience if you’re eligible for the tour.

You get to see adorable marine life, including manta rays, dolphins, and turtles.

The tours are very exclusive. Each tour group consists of only 4 persons and takes half a day, and there are plenty of perks like transportation to and from Sayulita, including lunch, and free equipment.

13. Experience horseback riding through the town and its surroundings

Horseback riding is a popular activity in Sayulita. So much so that there are organized tours offered by the locals here.

Here I am going to share a few ones from the Airbnb Experiences options.

14. Take a yoga class

Among all the best things to do in Sayulita, you will enjoy a relaxing yoga class, and even better if it’s on a private beach and with stunning views over the ocean.

The Yoga community started to grow back in the days when Sayulita was just starting to become the mecca for surfers and other collateral activities were starting to grow.

Yoga and meditations are one of the most sought-after activities when it comes to traveling to Sayulita.

So here I am going to share some of the most popular Yoga classes.

► Mindful Yoga and Hike to a private beach ► Yoga with Ocean Views ► Yoga Private Session

15. Take some surf lessons

Since you are in one of the top surfing spots in Mexico why don’t just challenge yourself with some class? You never know what you may find out.

Maybe you will just get hooked and become a pro. I know that surfing can become an addiction!

One of the advantages of surfing in Sayulita is that there are many incredible surfing spots available for all experience levels.

One of the beaches for beginners is in fact La Lancha, where both beginner surfers and pros have a blast, while others like me enjoy watching while working on their sun tan.

Here below I am sharing some surf class options. Click on the link to open the Airbnb page and read more about the class schedule, cost, and location.

17. Take a Temazcal, and learn about this ancestral practice of spiritual purification

A Temazcal is basically a sort of old-fashioned steam house, but its beneficial effects go beyond physical well-being. It’s a space designed for you to live different levels of an inner healing experience.

At the same time, you receive a medicinal steam bath with volcanic stones and soft teas (chamomile, lemongrass, peppermint, among others).

As the toxins are expelled, you feel the emotions of grounding to the ground and coming back to yourself.

The word Temazcal temazcal comes from the word temāzcalli , which is Nahuatl (an Aztec language) for ‘the house of heat.  ‘  Historically, temazcal es were used as a cleansing ritual for the people to engage in before and after going to wars.

Nowadays Temazcales are quite common in Mexico, not only to keep the old traditions and Mexican people’s heritage alive but as a truly powerful holistic healing practice.

If you have never tried it I would definitely recommend it.

18. Visit el Mercado del pueblo (farmers’ market)

Farmers’ markets are getting more and more common in Mexico, as a way to promote small business such as local farmers and artisans to sell healthy and sustainable food to the community of citizens and tourists alike.

El Mercado del Pueblo in Sayulita opened in 2009 joining the Mexican and American Slow Food Movements of bringing local, sustainable products directly to the table for people to enjoy.

The purpose is also to promote both healthy living and Mexican culture .

In fact, you not only find edible items but also local handmade arts and crafts coming from the local communities nearby.

19. Take a stroll around Sayulita

Although it’s very far from the charm of the colonial towns in Mexico, one of the things to do in Sayulita is definitely to take a walk around.

Whether it is early morning when the town is still sleeping or in the evening when there is a vibrant and festive atmosphere, you will enjoy the laid-back town vibe of the main plaza and the iconic revolution street where lines of paper colorful flags (papel picado) are hanging across.

Take a coffee in one of the healthy coffee shops ( I used to love Organi K among others) in the morning or sip a margarita by the beach during sunsets!

20. Take a Tacos tour in Sayulita

With this tour, you will experience the best taco’s places in the magic town of Sayulita with a local guide.

I would advise you to take this tour once you get there so that you can go back to your favorite eateries more time before you leave.

THINGS TO DO IN SAYULITA

Amazing day trips from sayulita, 22. take a day trip to puerto vallarta.

If you didn’t already notice, I have mentioned Puerto Vallarta quite a few times in this post. That’s because the vibrant city is so close to Sayulita that you can drive to it for a magical day-trip experience. (or catch the bus).

Puerto Vallarta was one of the earliest resort cities in Mexico, so there are tons of restaurants, art galleries, as well as amazing beaches, and a historic center to make your trip worth the effort.

You can read my guide to the amazing things to do in Puerto Vallarta if you want to learn more about this fun city.

Once in Puerto Vallarta for the day I recommend taking one of the amazing walking tours available so that you can learn more about the interesting history of the city, and how it becomes so famous before any other beach resort in Mexico.

23. Take a road trip to Punta Mita

Punta de Mita is an upscale resort town located between Sayulita and Nuevo Vallarta and definitely a great place to visit.

It’s one of the most expensive and high-end areas, with ultra-luxury resorts and world-class golf courses.

I loved to walk around the small town and check out the fancy shops. You can also sit at one of the cafes and then check out some beaches in the surroundings.

Punta de Mita is also very close to Playa La Lancha, so you can stop by on your way there.

Punta de Mita coastline

24. Visit the nearby Bucerias

Bucerias is a small beach town situated between Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta and yet one of the newest surprises of the Riviera Nayarit.

Its 5 km of pristine beach is the perfect place for practicing your favorite watersport whether it’s surfing, windsurfing, boogie boarding, and collecting shells.

The area is now very popular among kitesurfers as well. The beach is lined with incredible fish food restaurants where you can try local delicacies.

Buceria - Beach and sea food restaurants

You can take a stroll along the cobblestone streets of the quiet town and it will be like traveling back in time.

Enjoy the colorful houses, small stores, some local restaurants, art galleries, and a local market with many Huichol works of art among others.

Bucerias has everything you need and it makes a perfect day trip from Sayulita.

I particularly loved the art galleries located in the new part of town and the french bakery and Bistrot ( Mmugazz Bistro ).

Buceria art shop

25. Spend a day in the nearby San Pancho (San Francisco)

San Pancho has become the new hype when Sayulita started to become too popular and crowded.

Those who loved a more laidback vacation with fewer restaurant choices and a more tranquil scene would go to San Pancho.

The result was that this little town, is getting bigger every day but it still preserves the small village vibe.

I stayed there for a couple of weeks and I really enjoyed exploring the surroundings and the amazing beaches.

Sayulita travel tips

► how to get to sayulita from guadalajara.

Sayulita is very well connected by local transportation although I always recommend renting a car either from Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta. But let’s see your options on how to get to Sayulita.

🚌 Getting to Sayulita from Guadalajara by local bus

Local Coach buses from Vallarta Plus run quite frequently from Guadalajara Tlaquepaque or Zapopan.

You can check their schedule here .

► How to get to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta

🚌 getting to sayulita from puerto vallarta by local bus.

You can check Compostela Busses, which are local busses that run this route and they are very frequent.

🚐 Getting to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta by Shuttle

Or you can book shuttle transportation from the airport.

🚙 Getting to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta by Uber

There is an Uber in Puerto Vallarta and you can get one to reach Sayulita. However, it may be difficult to find an Uber in Sayulita to go back to Puerto Vallarta.

So the best bet is that you ask the number of the Uber that took you there if you feel comfortable. Some drivers also work outside the app.

► Renting a car in Sayulita

The best option is to rent a car either in Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta and use it during the entire stay. This way you will have the freedom to move around and visit all the nearby beaches and small towns along the Riviera Nayarit coast in total freedom.

If you are concerned about driving in Mexico or renting a car in Mexico , worry not! I have got you covered.

I wrote those posts with Yucatan Peninsula in mind but they are applicable also to the Pacific Coast too. All those touristy places are quite safe for driving around.

How to get around in Sayulita

Getting around Sayulita town is not very hard as the town is relatively small and you can easily walk almost anywhere.

Another option could be renting a golf cart if you think you can get tired easily.

If you didn’t rent a car in Puerto Vallarta , but you want to get it for a couple of days to explore the nearby towns, you can easily find a car rental in Sayulita as well although I have the feeling it will be more expensive than renting it in a small city.

Is there an Uber in Sayulita?

There are Uber in Sayulita but it’s hard to get one as there are very few. However, if you want to get from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita you can get on a Uber without any issue.

In Sayulita, it will be probably easier to get a taxi.

Sayulita hotels – Where to stay in Sayulita

Sayulita is one of the dream Mexican destinations, so it’s natural that there are tons of different lodging options here, including villas, hotels, and apartments.

If you haven’t found a place to stay during your visit to Sayulita, here are two of my favorite picks that you might like.

Hotel Vista Oceana

Hotel 7 Lunas Sayulita (Luxury Hotel just outside town)

The views alone make 7 Lunas one of the best places to stay in Sayulita, but they aren’t the only good thing about the hotel.

There are plenty of modern facilities here to make your stay not only comfortable but also luxurious, and the design and decor of 7 Lunas are really nice because of the traditional and authentic touches.

Hotel Vogue (mid-range/ luxury – in town)

Vogue is a tropical boutique hotel surrounded by refreshing gardens and palm trees.

It’s also a very artfully designed place, with art and decor handpicked to match the authentic traditional charm of the region.

What’s more, the hotel has a manicured garden with a pool along with all the facilities for a comfortable stay.

Hotel vogue sayulita

Hotel Casa Pia (Mid-range/ budget)

This is where I stayed and it was ok for a budget accommodation in Sayulita. The location was perfect, at walking distance from everything but far from the party area.

The rooms are nicely decorated and with good WIFI. However some of the rooms don’t have windows to the outside, so you feel like you are buried in a way.

It didn’t really affect my stay because I was always out and only went back to the room for sleep, but it’s something to consider and if you like a spacious room with lots of light you may want to look elsewhere.

When is the best time to visit Sayulita?

Sayulita is always busy no matter when you go and the weather is always warm (sometimes too much). But there are times when it is much better to travel to Sayulita, depending on the kind of experience you want to have.

Here below I will share what is Sayulita like in different time of the year

May through June

In my opinion, the shoulder season, which falls between May and July, is the best time of the year to visit Sayulita. The weather is comfortably warm, there are fewer crowds, and things are far cheaper than usual!

July and August

It’s not the best season weather-wise as it’s hot and humid but it’s high season for family travels because the schools are closed. Not a good time to travel if you love peace and tranquillity.

October through November

October through November is the low season period for Sayulita. The weather is hot and humid, and the chances of rain are higher, so the tourism scene during these months is pretty much off. However, prices are the cheapest through the low season as well, so you can visit this time of the year if you’re on a very tight budget.

December through April

The high season is when the majority of travelers come to Sayulita. The weather is sunny during the day and nights are cooler, and chances of rain are scarce, all of which make Sayulita the go-to haven for Americans and Canadians during winter. Not surprisingly, crowds are bigger and prices are higher during this period.

Here are some best times to visit Sayulita for different kinds of vacation:

➡️ Best time to visit Sayulita for the weather – December through May

➡️ Best time to visit Sayulita for hotel deals – right after Easter through May and September through November

➡️ Best time to visit Sayulita for partying – March and April

➡️ Best time to visit Sayulita for smaller crowds – right after Easter through May and September through November

➡️ Best time to visit Sayulita for surfing – Although you get waves all year round in Sayulita beach the best months for surfing are  December through early April , when you will get the north swells.

Things to do in Sayulita: Frequently Asked Questions

Is sayulita safe.

I would consider Sayulita among the safe destinations in Mexico in general.

However, you should be aware of local scams that may occur at times, like the one that happened to me.

I went for a day trip from Sayulita to Lo De Marcos, a small town at only 15 km from Sayulita.

I was walking to the beach when somebody called me out and made me notice that my dress was very dirty with smelly stains on the back.

While I was distracted, trying to figure out what happened and trying to clean it up, they stole my wallet from my backpack.

Of course, I had all my credit cards and my visa (Residencia Permanente). That was very silly of me to keep everything in one place, I know and I am usually smarter than that.

I was definitely not following what I am preaching in all my posts on safety in Mexico.

When I went to the police I was told that this is a very common scam that they used to do in Banderas Bay ( Puerto Vallarta ) and they have been starting over there as well.

I am just giving you the heads up, in case anything similar happens to you.

They may do it with your car as well. So if that happens, don’t get out of your car, lock yourself in and call 911. (This is another reason why I always suggest you should get a local sim card.

Never let your guard down, it’s a beautiful place but there is still a lot of poverty beyond the fancy hotels.

Just stay wise and use some commonsense as I mention in my guide on Is Puerto Vallarta safe?

Is Sayulita safe for solo female travelers?

Sayulita is a relatively safe destination for a female traveler too. Being so touristy there are always people around day at night.

I would still watch out for pickpocketers and minor crimes ( as I mentioned above)

✔️ Avoid dark isolated roads at night as much as I would avoid going to isolated beaches alone

✔️ Don’t get wasted

✔️ Never leave your drinks and food unattended

✔️ Never leave your own personal belonging unattended

Sayulita beach

Is Sayulita worth visiting?

In my humble opinion, it is indeed. There are so many things I appreciate about Sayulita.

The spectacular views, a lot of outdoor activities, delicious restaurants and coffee places, and a vibrant community.

Lots of yoga places and a surf tribe! Everything is so close and you don’t have to walk miles to get what you want.

So yes, Sayulita is worth visiting!

Sayulita Carricito beach

What is Sayulita Mexico known for?

Sayulita is mainly known for being a surf town founded by surfers. It has many incredible beaches and surfing spots for any kind of surfer of all levels.

But with time Sayulita became a popular place for yoga and wellness retreats and in fact, you will find many interesting ones on this site .

How many days do I need in Sayulita?

This is a very difficult question to answer because it really depends on what kinds of activities you want to do and how many days of chilling on the beach and Margaritas you need to recover from your working year 🙂

Keep in mind that to know the town you just need 24hrs. But as you could read in this article there are so many things to do in Sayulita that you could spend a month and never get bored.

Is Sayulita Expensive?

Sayulita can be expensive when it comes to accommodation. However, I found the culinary scene quite accessible compared to hotel prices.

I was also positively surprised by the variety of quality restaurant options. Even cheap taquerias offer delicious fresh dishes.

My favorite was Tacos Los Reyes but you will find a lot of street food options or cheap and affordable high-end restaurants.

Sayulita - street food

Sayulita vs Tulum: which one is best?

Both towns are Pueblos Magicos which is one of the few things they have in common. Being beach towns they have the laidback flip-flop vibes that we are looking for.

However, they are very different places and as things are now I would prefer Sayulita without a doubt. But let’s see the most substantial differences:

Beach Although beach-wise, Tulum is the winner (I just can’t get that endless beach out of my head!), I love Sayulita beaches because of the green mountain backdrops, which Tulum is lacking being on the flat Yucatan Peninsula.

However, Tulum is on the Caribbean side, which means crystal clear water, when there’s no sargasso.

Surf : well, surprisingly there are a few surfing spots in Tulum although many don’t know. However, the winner in the surf department is definitely Sayulita, with so many surfing spots for all experience levels, as mentioned above.

Food : Food-wise, Tulum has a lot more to offer for being much bigger but, in Sayulita, everything is such a close distance that you can walk around safely from one restaurant to another, while in Tulum you have to rely on taxi all the time unless you have your own transportation.

Town : I love Sayulita a thousandfold more than Tulum. Despite all the hype about Tulum and all its trendy spots and cool places, it has become too big and too noisy with so much traffic that moving from the town to the beach takes forever. It stresses me out. Sayulita on the contrary although it can be busy, it’s smaller and everything is within walking distance. Definitely my choice!

Safety : I am very sorry to say that Tulum is losing ground on that aspect. There have been many unfortunate events that don’t make me feel safe anymore going there. It’s sad to say but it’s the truth! Sayulita on the contrary seems pretty safe and more in control.

Airport : none of them has an airport but they both have one at a close distance, Cancun Airport to Tulum is about 90 minute’s drive, and Puerto Vallarta airport to Sayulita is 45 minutes.

General Vibe : As you may have guessed by now, Sayulita has a more relaxed and chilled vibe with a party scene if you want it, safer and cooler.

Tulum is kind of stressful lately unless you stay in one of its luxury hotels on the beach where you get pampered and enjoy the beautiful Caribbean sea, in which case, Tulum is the winner.

Tulum Beach aerial view

Is Sayulita a party town?

Yes, Sayulita is considered a party town because there is always something going on at night.

However, if you are not a party animal and you love peace and quiet, you will appreciate tranquil hotels just outside town but still at walking distance.

Do you need pesos in Sayulita?

Yes, you do need pesos in Sayulita because the majority of the restaurants, bars, and cafes only accept cash and if you pay in USD the exchange rate will not be in your favor.

However, I was shocked to learn that there is only one local “cajero automatico” (cash machine), and all the others are for USD only.

The Mexican one is Intercam Bank and it’s located in front of the bus station at the entrance of the town. The best way to get Mexican pesos is to withdraw from there.

If you have USD you can go to the bank and have them exchanged. If you do that at the airport you may get a less favorable exchange rate.

Can you swim on the beaches of Sayulita?

You could, but I wouldn’t. The undertow is pretty strong and it can be very dangerous even for good swimmers.

If you are surfing, then it’s a different story. But beaches in Sayulita are not for swimming.

The nearby Playa de Los Muertos is a bit more swimmable but I would be careful anyway.

Playa de los Muertos Sayulita

Is the water still dirty in Sayulita?

According to what locals said during my recent visit to Sayulita, the water situation is much better on the main beach.

Regardless, it is not a swimmable beach unless you are surfing so I would still avoid getting in and check out more friendlier beaches such as Playa La Lancha or Playa de Los Muertos.

At the end of Sayulita Beach

Are there mosquitoes in Sayulita?

Yes, mosquitos are there all year round but I was pleasantly surprised that during my visit at the end of February, I didn’t get bitten even during my hike in the jungle.

This would have not been the case if it was summer though. So make sure you get mosquito repellent with you.

Things to do in Sayulita: Final Thoughts

I am sure by now you know how to plan your trip to Sayulita. I would suggest you take some time to explore the beaches, enjoy the delicious food and take some day trips to visit the beautiful surroundings. Sayulita makes a good base for that.

Also, you can stay close to the town center and all the restaurants and bars and yet away from the noise, if you choose your hotel wisely.

I would also take a car rental so you can easily explore around without having to wait forever for the local bus, especially in the hot season.

Never let the guard down and always keep an eye on your belonging. Other than that, have fun!

Landscape shot of Monkey Mountain from Carricitos Beach in Sayulita

Want to know the best things to do in Sayulita, Mexico?

You’re in the right place, because I’m about to give you all the deets. I just returned home from my second trip to this colorful surf town, and I can’t wait to share all the amazing things to do in Sayulita with you.

Welcome to the ultimate travel guide for experiencing the best of Sayulita, Mexico!

Whether you’re a surfer, art lover, wellness junkie, or beach bum, Sayulita has something for everyone. From the stunning beaches, such as Playa Carricitos and Playa Los Muertos, to fun hiking trails and the renowned Hidden Beach on Islas Marietas, this vibrant beach town is the perfect destination to visit for both adventure and enjoying some proper downtime.

Downtown Sayulita

I do want to point out that one of the things I especially adore about Sayulita is that it’s not the kind of place where you feel like you really need to do that much and check all the boxes! True relaxation is a key ingredient here to enjoying what makes Sayulita special.

So take a handful of top bucket list items from this list and then leave all the rest, so you can have plenty of time to relax and soak up the essence of the Nayarit coast in all its beauty.

In addition to highlighting the coolest things to do in Sayulita, make sure to stick around to the end of the post where I’m sharing some invaluable travel tips to help you get the most out of your trip. From the best time to visit to how to get to Sayulita, I’ve got you covered.

OK, let’s dive in so you can start planning your trip to this charming Pueblo Magico.

The Best Things to do in Sayulita, Mexico

Keep in mind as you read this post that one of the absolute best things to do in Sayulita is just RELAX, plain and simple. The town of Sayulita is small, and while there is plenty for you to fill your days with, I highly recommend you don’t try to do too much here. It’s not necessary.

Instead, book a beautiful hotel and enjoy your downtime breathing in the salty air of the Riviera Nayarit coastline.

Explore Town

Colorful Sayulita sign in town

There’s a reason why Sayulita was designated a Pueblo Magico or “Magic Town” by the Tourism Board of Mexico—it’s one of the most charming small towns in Mexico.

The first thing you should do when you arrive in Sayulita is pop into the town square and get a feel for the area. It’s small but adorable, with murals, street art and crafts visible at every turn.

Don’t miss getting lost a bit and wandering off the most well-trodden roads as there are some hidden gems and cute shops to be discovered throughout.

Take a Boat Tour to the Hidden Beach in Marietas Islands National Park

The hidden beach at Marietas Islands National Park

If you’re looking for the #1 bucket list item to experience while in Sayulita, this is it. This hidden beach looks straight out of a movie and requires visitors to swim under a cave to reach it.

Plus, Marietas Islands are part of a national wildlife and marine reserve, making it an incredible destination to spot birds and marine life.

Since this secret beach is located inside a National Park and daily visitors are limited, you have to book a tour to visit—and they sell out fast, so make sure to book early!

I’m going to tell you about the best tour to book here, because even though some tours take you into the national park, they won’t actually take you into the hidden beach, which would be a huge bummer in my opinion.

This is one of the only tours where you actually get to swim up to the hidden beach.

The only downside to this tour is that is leaves from Puerto Vallarta, so it’s a bit of a drive from Sayulita to the meeting point (about 1 hour).

If you’d prefer to leave from Sayulita, this small group snorkel tour is a great option, though the hidden beach isn’t always guaranteed—so make sure to check with the operator, as this can be dependent on weather, permits, etc.

Hike to Malpaso Beach

View of shaded huts at Playa Malpaso

Playa Malpaso is a pristine stretch of sand surrounded by lush jungle, located just a short distance north of Sayulita’s town center. This one is worth visiting for its secluded location and dramatic beauty.

The beach is only accessible by foot, which is great news for those who want some peace and quiet—when we came here in the middle of the day there were literally only two other people around!

While swimming here is not ideal due to rough surf, it’s great if you’re looking for a romantic spot for a picnic or a quiet place to read a book.

There are also a few shaded structures from which to seek solace from the sun. Whatever you choose to do here, Malpaso Beach is a hidden gem in Sayulita that should not be missed.

To get here, you’ll need to hike from the northernmost part of Sayulita Beach over a headland trail and onto a jungle path that will dump you onto Malpaso.

It’s a fun adventure in and of itself, and the best part of the trail is the overhead views it gives you looking down onto Playa las Cuevas and Playa Malpaso in the distance.

Go on a Taco Tour

Taco dinner at El Itacate

While there are a handful of great restaurants in Sayulita, if I’m being completely honest, I wouldn’t consider it a foodie destination compared to other places in Mexico like Oaxaca and Bacalar Lagoon . With that said, what Sayulita does excel at in spades are (not surprisingly)—street tacos!

Going with traditional Mexican fare in Sayulita is your best bet and the tacos do not disappoint. If you want to do a fun al pastor street taco comparison, head to Tacos Al Pastor Tal Ivan and Tacos de Pastor Diaz , which are across the street from each other.

My favorite spot used to be Ivan’s, but on my second trip back I’ve decided that Tacos de Pastor Diaz takes the cake!

Another can’t miss taco spot is El Itacate (pictured above) which is more of a sit down restaurant and serves hearty tacos that are plentiful in meat portions.

Want to join a fun taco tour led by a local Mexican guide? This is the perfect taco tour to book , especially if you’re a solo traveler looking to meet new friends.

Go Horseback Riding

If riding horseback through the jungle trails and beaches of Sayulita sounds magical to you, then make sure to book this bucket list experience before your arrival in town.

This small group tour looks incredible, with the option to ride horseback during the day or at sunset, and then cap off your experience with a local tequila tasting.

Grab a Photo at the Iconic Slap Street

Colorful flags on Slap Street in Sayulita, Mexico

You can’t go to Sayulita and not take a photo in front of the iconic rainbow colored flag street, AKA Slap Street. This narrow road connects the center plaza of town to the beach and is filled with fun flags surrounded by palm trees.

Head here in the early morning for the best photos without the crowds!

Book a Ziplining or ATV Adventure Tour

You’ve made it to the jungle, so let’s make sure you actually see it properly! One of the best ways to do this is via zipline, and if you have yet to experience this kind of adventure, it’s a must-do during your trip to Sayulita, especially if you’re seeking a bit of an adrenaline rush.

This top-rated ziplining tour in Sayulita features 13 different zip-lines and four suspension bridges, reaching heights as tall as 125 meters above sea level. As an added bonus, you even get a tequila tasting at the end of your tour, and they offer hotel pickup!

For even more adrenaline-inducing adventures, this ATV tour will give you the ride of your life, exploring both Punto Mita and Sayulita via 4WD UTV. If you’ve been itching to get beyond the Sayulita roads where your golf cart can go, then this is the perfect off-road opportunity.

Watch Sunset from Carricitos Beach

Carricitos Beach in Sayulita, one of the best things to do in Sayulita is watch the sunset from here

This is the most beautiful beach in Sayulita in my opinion, and the best one to watch sunset from due to its west facing location! With waves crashing against giant beach boulders and views of Monkey Mountain in the distance, it’s truly breathtaking.

The added bonus of visiting Carricitos Beach is the lack of hustle and bustle from tourists. Due to its secluded location, it still remains a local’s beach, making it the perfect spot for relaxation without the chaotic atmosphere of vendors selling souvenirs or crowded beach umbrellas.

How to Get to Carricitos: You can get to Playa Carricitos via taxi, car, golf cart or on foot, but the final section is a private road that must be walked (about 20 minutes).

You can find a road to Carricitos listed on Google Maps, at which point you’ll see a sign for a private road where you’ll need to park your car/golf cart and take the rest on foot. From here, there’s a dirt road where you’ll eventually spot a foot path to the right marked by a doorway with beach signage. From here, it’s just a short steep path down to the beach.

Hike Monkey Mountain

If you’re up for a challenge and want to see some of the best views in Sayulita, you need to hike Monkey Mountain (or Cerro del Mono).

This is the hardest hike in Sayulita—a little over 4 miles round trip—and it can be intense, especially if you’re not used to hiking in hot and humid weather. But once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with epic panoramic views of the town and the surrounding jungle.

Note that if you’re in Sayulita during the rainy season (between June and October), the trail is inaccessible due to rains and also extreme heat.

If it’s your first time to the area and you have concerns about following the trail on your own, you can hire a local guide . This is an ideal way to go as the trail dips in and out of private property and includes several confusing forks and rope sections that can be challenging to navigate.

Especially if you’re looking to catch sunset at the top, it’s best to hike down after with a local guide. Book your guided Monkey Mountain hike here .

Take Surf Lessons

Surfers in Sayulita

If Sayulita is known for anything, it’s the laidback surf culture, and the waves in Sayulita are perfect for beginners. For this reason, a lot of new surfers flock to Sayulita to learn the basics.

If you’re looking for the best local surf school, WildMex Surf and Adventure has the top ratings on TripAdvisor and offers private surf lessons here .

Chill Out at a Sayulita Resort

Pool at La Joya Sayulita

Ah, one of my favorite things to do in Sayulita: just chill . While there are some cute spots to stay in Sayulita town like Selina and Petit Hotel Hafa , I really recommend booking more luxurious accommodations on the coast so you can make the most of the beauty of Sayulita.

I can’t recommend La Joya enough—it’s a boutique hotel perched on a hill overlooking the ocean, so you get the perfect combination of jungle meets the sea. Plus, it’s west-facing, so sunsets here are epic .

They have a gorgeous pool that looks right out onto the ocean, and we spent several days here with a book in hand, soaking up the sun—and their insanely delicious Urrraca mocktail made of lychee, coconut cream, lime juice and mint leaves.

Explore Sayulita Nightlife

When the sun sets in Sayulita, the surfers come out to party, and if you stick around for awhile, you’ll probably start to notice the same characters popping up over and over again at the local haunts.

If you want to experience the best of Sayulita nightlife, don’t miss Yambak , which is a great little craft brewery that does 2 for 1 Tuesdays.

Bar Don Pato next door is a fun spot for salsa and dancing (it’s more of a late night spot that opens at 8 PM and goes ’til 3 in the morning).

For a more relaxing and cozy evening out, head to Escondido Bar which has the best craft cocktails in town.

Take a Day Trip to San Pancho

Colorful flag-lined street in San Pancho, Mexico

San Pancho (or San Francisco) is a charming and laid-back coastal town located just 15 minutes north of Sayulita. A lot of locals refer to it as what “Sayulita used to be,” before the busy crowds started rolling in.

Taking a day trip to San Pancho is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of Sayulita and enjoy a more relaxed and authentic experience of Riviera Nayarit.

One of the top reasons to visit San Pancho is to check out its pristine beaches. The town’s main beach is a picturesque crescent-shaped stretch of white sand that’s great for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing, with rental options available for surfers.

Apart from the beaches, San Pancho is also home to a variety of art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, and it’s a great spot to chow down on some fresh seafood and shop local artisan goods.

Go Whale Watching

While this is seasonal (the best time for spotting whales is between December and April), this is a must if you’re traveling to Sayulita during that time. Humpback whales mate and breed in the area during winter, and there are tons of whale watching cruises that go out each day.

However, if you want to join the absolute best tour led by Sayulita’s first and only pure whale watching and research company, make sure to book this tour .

La Orca Sayulita are the real deal and will make sure to take you on a whale watching adventure in the most ethical way possible. Plus, they avoid the overly crowded Banderas Bay, where most of the other boats go.

Shop for Local Artisan Goods

Artisan goods at Nakawe Trading in Sayulita

I go crazy for shopping in Mexico, and Sayulita does not disappoint. There are so many cute shops with local and one-of-a-kind artisan goods for you to take home—that is, if you’ve left room in your suitcase.

A few favorites not to miss: Project Artefackto , Nakawe Trading , and Calima were some of my top bookmarked spots.

Join a Sunset Booze Cruise

Sunset in Sayulita

Because everyone deserves to have a little extra fun on their Sayulita vacation, and there’s no better way to enjoy a cocktail than aboard a luxury mega yacht.

There are several companies that charter booze cruises around the bay, but this sunset yacht cruise is the best of the best, offering a three hour cruise with open bar as you sail along the coast of Puerto Vallarta.

Spend the day at Playa de Los Muertos

Beach umbrellas at Playa de los Muertos in Sayulita

One of the most popular beaches in Sayulita, Playa de Los Muertos, is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the beauty of Sayulita’s coast in an area that feels a bit more tucked away.

The beach’s name translates to “Beach of the Dead” as it’s next to a cemetery, but there’s nothing morbid about this lively stretch of sand.

The beach is famous for its stunning rock formations, which add an element of drama to the landscape, and its ideal location for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Visitors can also rent lounge chairs, umbrellas, and paddleboards from the beach vendors and even order drinks.

Getting to Playa de Los Muertos is easy, as it’s only a short walk from Sayulita’s town center. Visitors can take the main road leading to the north end of town and continue walking until they see a sign indicating the beach’s entrance.

Alternatively, visitors can opt to rent a golf cart or take a taxi/car to the beach where there’s a parking lot for a small fee.

Grab Breakfast in Town

Best things to do in Sayulita - grab a chia bowl at Anchor Cafe

Other than street tacos, another area that Sayulita gets right is its breakfasts. Whether you’re looking for healthy, organic chia bowls or variations of chilaquiles, this town has got you covered.

For healthy brekkie, head straight to Anchor Cafe or Organi-K . Other favorite spots for breakfast are Miscelanea Cafe (which is known for their chilaquiles), Yah-Yah , and El Original for a traditional Mexican breakfast.

Join a Yoga Class

A huge part of the Sayulita tourism scene centers around wellness, and of course plenty of people come to Sayulita take part in yoga retreats, healing modalities and even psychedelic journeys.

A yoga class is a perfect low-commitment entry-point for you to experience that side of the Sayulita scene.

Whether you book a yoga class through your resort or take a class in town, this is the perfect way to soak up the calming energy of Sayulita in my opinion. This yoga class meets hiking tour looks super fun and includes a scenic walk to a secluded beach, where you’ll complete a nature-filled yoga session.

Visit the Beach Where Bachelor in Paradise is Filmed

Aerial drone view of Playa Escondida

For fans of Bachelor in Paradise, you won’t want to miss an adventure down to Hotel Playa Escondida , a boutique hotel set along a private stretch of beach in Sayulita, which coincidentally was right next to our hotel (La Joya)!

Of course, if filming is in session you’ll probably be out of luck, but if you can gain access, word on the street is that the guacamole at the oceanfront restaurant is phenomenal.

Take Part in a Baby Turtle Release

Baby turtles in bucket, getting ready to be released in Sayulita

Did you know that female sea turtles return to the exact location where they were born in order to lay their own eggs?

That’s why it’s so important to preserve every turtle’s natural habitat, which is the main goal of the Sayulita Turtle Camp , an environmental conservation organization who educate visitors and locals about preservation and protection from poaching.

One of the most beloved activities that visitors can take part in to support this organization is a sunset baby turtle release. I was able to do this on my first visit to Sayulita, and it was such a unique experience I’ll never forget.

I mean, if hundreds of baby turtles charging towards the sea at one time isn’t enough to make your heart melt, then I don’t know what will.

Visit here to find out how you can donate or volunteer with the Sayulita Turtle Camp .

Do a Mezcal or Tequila Tasting

Someone pouring tequila into a shot glass

If this is your first time to Mexico or you’ve never experienced a mezcal or tequila tasting, then you need to add this one to the list.

While Sayulita specifically isn’t known for tequila and mezcal in the same way that Oaxaca and Tequila are, you’re in Mexico—so this is still the perfect place to expand your knowledge around agave-based spirits.

This artisan mezcal tasting led by a local sommelier is one of the best options in town and gets really great reviews.

Plus, if you’re a solo female traveler, this is a great, safe way to meet other travelers while you’re in Sayulita.

Go Scuba Diving

For my fellow diving enthusiasts, there’s a place for you in Sayulita as well! This epic half-day diving tour in Marietas Islands National Park is perfect for friends or couples who want to dive and snorkel together, as they offer both.

This is a small group tour that leaves from Sayulita, so you don’t have to drive all the way to Puerto Vallarta to pick up the boat which is so nice.

Top Sayulita Travel Tips

Landscape view of Sayulita Beach from the hike to Playa Malpaso

How to Get to Sayulita

To get to Sayulita, you’ll want to book flights into Puerto Vallarta ( search for the best flight deals here ). From there, it’s about an hour north to Sayulita, so you can either rent a car or book a driver to take you and then rent a golf cart once you’re in town.

If you’re choosing to book a rental car, I highly recommend booking with Discover Cars and choosing the full insurance coverage.

Mexico is notorious for having really frustrating rental experiences, but that’s mostly because they don’t include all the charges up front when you book, so then people often get surprised when they show up at the rental agency and they have to pay about 4x more!

By booking with Discover Cars (which is what we did for my recent trip to Sayulita), you can see all the costs up front very clearly when you book choosing full coverage, and you won’t get surprised on arrival.

Pro Tip: Mexico car rental agencies don’t accept your credit card’s rental coverage if you have a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Trust me, I’ve tried to decline their coverage and use my credit card instead and it doesn’t work. Opting for full coverage at the time of booking is the best way to get the best deal and still have your liability covered.

Where to Stay in Sayulita

My #1 recommendation for where to stay in Sayulita is La Joya , which is a stunning boutique hotel that overlooks the ocean. We absolutely loved our peaceful stay here and the staff was fabulous. If you can book a room here, you won’t be disappointed.

Here are a few more of my top Sayulita hotel picks to check out:

  • Hotel Boutique Siete Lunas – This hotel has a beautiful romantic setting that is close to town.
  • Selina Hotel – Affordable and cute hostel right in town.
  • Villa Amor – This stunning property overlooks the main Sayulita Beach and is great for families as they offer various room sizes including villas with king and twin beds.
  • Residencia Tropical Don Bonito – We stumbled upon this place as it’s attached to a coffee shop, and couldn’t get over how cute it is. Don Bonito is close to town but far enough away from the chaos to be a peaceful retreat.
  • Hotel Ysuri Sayulita – Great for families and groups of friends, this hotel has various suites and multi bedroom apartment-sized options.
  • Petit Hotel Hafa – A charming and affordable boutique hotel right in town that feels like a slice of Morocco in Sayulita.

Is Sayulita Safe to Visit Right Now?

The short answer is yes, but of course things do happen in Mexico from time to time, which our media loves to cover to scare travelers. While I can’t promise nothing will ever happen to you in Sayulita, thousands upon thousands of people visit here per year with very few incidences.

I felt very comfortable and safe on both my trips to Sayulita. It’s not the kind of place where you feel like you need to watch your purse or always be looking behind your shoulder—it feels super friendly and safe!

Just be smart like you would in any other destination and follow some basic safety principles and you will be fine (ie. don’t leave your belongings unattended, get too inebriated, or walk alone at night).

If you’re worried about safety in Mexico, make sure to check out my complete guide to Mexico travel tips that includes a full section on safety, with pro tips to follow as a female traveler.

What is the Best Way to Get Around Sayulita ?

You have three options for getting around Sayulita and those are: renting a car, opting to walk everywhere or renting a golf cart .

Most people choose to rent a golf cart as there is limited parking in Sayulita town and it’s easy to bum around by golf cart everywhere you need to go. If you plan on staying mostly local, this is a great option. Check out the golf cart rental options here.

If you’re staying at a hotel super close to town, you can choose to just walk everywhere and book a tour for any day excursions.

We chose to rent a car because we wanted the flexibility and mobility that having a car provides. This ended up saving us money overall because we didn’t have to pay for a transfer from Puerto Vallarta airport and could easily get out of town without having to book a tour. Check rental car rates here.

The Best Time to Visit Sayulita

The best time to take a trip to Sayulita is between October and March after the rainy season (June through October). However, this can be a popular time of year to visit so prices can skyrocket.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the migrating whales, make sure to visit in winter between December and April.

Do you need cash in Sayulita?

Yes! This is one of the few Mexico destinations I’ve been to recently that did require cash in many places, so make sure you have pesos handy.

I hope this post gave you tons of ideas of things to do in Sayulita! Have questions? Leave them in the comments below.

Not only will you sample these authentic spirits, but you’ll also discover the art of producing them, and learn to differentiate between them like a pro!

Of course, when in Nayarit state, food is of utmost importance, and you’ll have the best tacos you’ve ever had here!

By the end of the tour, you’ll have all the insider know-how for ordering like a local in any restaurant, bar, or food stand in town! What else do you need when coming to Mexico!?

Amanda was an amazing tour guide! She showed us some gems of Sayulita. We thought the food and town was so good. She was very knowledgeable, couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Valerie H, Viator

12. PRIVATE ECOHIKE WITH JUNGLE, MOUNTAINS, HIDDEN BEACH

🕛 Duration: 3 Hours | ⭐ Rating: 5/5 | Private Tour

With so many Sayulita excursions, it can be difficult to find the right one, but if you want to get a private tour, then this is a no-brainer.

This Ecohike goes through the jungle, mountains, and hidden beach, and it’s perfect for the whole family.

You don’t need to be a seasoned hiker to join the fun, as all levels are welcome!

During this 3-hour tour, you’ll have the chance to practice your bird-watching skills with the help of the professional guide, and binoculars are provided.

You’ll learn about the diverse flora and fauna of the area and uncover all the hidden secrets of the jungle.

Nothing beats taking a break on a magnificent, secluded beach surrounded by nature’s beauty, and this is one of the best day trips from Sayulita you can book!

The guide Aleo was the best ever. So interesting learned a lot, great workout, lots of fun, great views. Liz S, Viator

13. PRIVATE SURF LESSON IN SAYULITA

🕛 Duration: 3 Hours | ⭐ Rating: 4.5/5 | Private Tour

Grab your sunscreen and join this private surf lesson in Sayulita, the ultimate surfer’s paradise.

That’s right, you’ll see a ton of surfers around town, and this is your chance to be one of them!

Start by learning the basics of surfing, including board positioning, how to stand up, and what to do once you catch a wave.

And don’t worry if you’re feeling a little nervous, as the instructors will be right by your side every step of the way.

But it’s not all work and no play – it’s all about good vibes and having a great time. The instructors are fun and know exactly how to put you at ease.

And once you’re done riding the waves, relax in their chic beach-style rest area and catch some rays.

Don’t waste any more time and on top of other Sayulita excursions, make sure to come and learn how to surf!

Alessandro was very patient and made this a great experience! My son was up and surfing by the time the lesson was over. He can’t wait to get back out there! Shop was clean and staff were friendly. We’d highly recommend this tour! Laura H, Viator

14. SNORKELING TRIP TO YELAPA

🕛 Duration: 8 Hours | ⭐ Rating: 5/5 | Small Group Tour

Another snorkeling trip to consider in Sayulita is this one that takes you right to Yelapa.

Yelapa, a tiny yet stunning gem, is only reachable by boat, and trust me, it’s worth the journey.

Here, you’ll find an irresistible white sandy beach, perfect for you to chill out with a refreshing margarita and snorkeling.

The first stop sets the tone for the entire day, Los Arcos de Mismaloya, where you can stay snorkeling for up to 1 hour!

Once in Yelapa, your guide will lead you to the hidden waterfall, a steep but short climb in the forest. You’ll also get free time to explore around at your own pace.

What I particularly like about this trip is that it’s a small group tour, so you’ll get personalized attention, and that is priceless.

The price was reasonable and included transport to La Cruz where the boat was docked, transport to a dingy that took us to the Yelapa beach and back, and then transport back to Sayulita. Super friendly staff and a pleasurable experience overall. Their communication was clear and concise. Would highly recommend! A TripAdvisor Traveler

15. PRIVATE PHOTO TOUR WITH PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER

🕛 Duration: 4 Hours | ⭐ Rating: 5/5 | Private Tour

Last but not least on this list of best tours in Sayulita is this private photography tour.

You’ll learn not only to find the best angles but you’ll also go to hidden gems.

Led by a professional photographer with an eye for stunning visuals, this tour will take you to three different locations that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard.

From the lush jungle viewpoint to the little-known waterfall and palm-lined beach, you’ll be snapping photos that will make all your friends back home jealous.

But this tour isn’t just about getting the perfect shot, it’s also about improving your own photography skills!

You’ll spend the day snapping photos and chatting about the philosophy behind what makes a great picture.

All in all, it’s the perfect addition to other tours in Sayulita, and you’ll be prepared to take the best photos you’ve ever shot!

JP put together an amazing workshop! I had such a blast spending the afternoon with him. He is extremely knowledgeable in a variety of different forms of photography and loves sharing his knowledge and teaching others. I loved the photos that I walked away with from my trip. I absolutely recommend this tour to anyone interested! A TripAdvisor Traveler

TOURS IN SAYULITA – FAQ

Now that you know everything about the tours Sayulita has to offer, and the best day trips from Sayulita, let’s answer some frequently asked questions from first-time visitors.

IS IT WORTH TAKING A TOUR IN SAYULITA?

Absolutely! Taking a tour in Sayulita is worth it.

With its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and a plethora of activities, a tour in Sayulita offers an immersive experience of this Mexican paradise.

And while you can visit most spots on your own, what better way to learn about each place than with a tour guide?

things to do in sayulita, sayulita mexico, what to do in sayulita, sayulita

HOW LONG TO STAY IN SAYULITA?

While being a small town, there are many activities to enjoy, so if you’re wanting to experience it fully, I recommend spending at least 5 or 6 days.

However, should you only have a little free time, 2 to 3 full days will allow you to scratch the surface and join a tour.

With that in mind, you can even stay longer from 2 weeks to 1 month and I guarantee you won’t get bored as it’s simply one of the best travel destinations in Mexico.

It’s also worth noting that most visitors stay in both Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita during their holidays.

If that’s a possibility for you, 5 days in Sayulita and 3 to 4 days in Puerto Vallarta would make the perfect travel itinerary.

Sayulita has hundreds of accommodations to choose from so I have narrowed it down to a few of the best places to stay to suit the needs of luxury travelers, budget backpackers, and everyone in between.

What is the best time to visit sayulita.

The best time to visit Sayulita is generally between December and April.

During these months, the weather is pleasant, with less humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities and beach relaxation.

The town is also less crowded compared to the rainy season, which typically falls between June and October.

However, if you’re looking for a warmer temperature, the hottest months are June, July, and August.

HOW TO GET TO SAYULITA ?

Getting to this hippy-chic town is fairly easy. Simply fly into Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR), and from here it’s a short 45-minute drive.

The decision between using public transport, booking a private transfer, or renting a car will depend on how long you will be staying in the region as well as how much exploring outside of town you have planned while you are here.

It’s super easy to get around town on foot, but if you want to explore further, you will need a vehicle and your best bet is to rent a car at the airport when you arrive.

Alternatively, you can book a private transfer from the airport in Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita.

This is the most stress-free option where your driver will meet you at the airport and take you directly to your accommodation in the Sayulita area.

Another option is to take a taxi from the airport which costs around 1000 MXN ($50 USD).

And lastly, taking the public bus from Puerto Vallarta Airport is also an option. The bus usually has a windshield sign displaying ‘Sayulita’ or ‘Compostela’ and the cost is around $5 USD.
