What To Wear In London | London Fashion Outfits To Pack Right Now

Outfits , Style , Style Guides , Travel

Wondering what to wear in London as a traveler? This London fashion guide should answer all of your questions!

London is one of the places in Europe with endless breathtaking attractions, thought-provoking museums, and romantic neighborhoods. Unlike other cities in the world, London keeps a great hold on its history and origins. This can be seen in their nostalgic architecture and the way locals dress & act.

If there’s anything else you should know as a traveler, it should be that British weather is unpredictable . Sometimes, sunny mornings end with rain, and chilly days turn into warm afternoons. Regardless of the season, you must be prepared.

Want to learn the ins and outs of London fashion so you can dress like a local? Keep reading!

How Do Locals Dress In London?

What to wear in London | London outfits | London fashion | London style

Locals in London tend to have a fondness for vests, earthy colors, dark colors, and academia styles . Most outfits start with a button-down and are finished off with an argyle vest and some trousers. Wearing a button-down alone is probably the most casual a Londoner will go. You’ll see locals with cotton t-shirts, but not many of them. It is part of the London style culture to look tailored, neat, and dressed up most of the time.

Londoners are traditionalists. They are not as playful and eccentric with fashion as American and Parisian styles . London outfits usually won’t have more than three colors into one outfit and tend to lean into neutral colors.

The second thing you’ll notice among Londoners is the literary and Academia ‘Uni’ vibe. This explains why they love argyle fashion, vests, and dark colors. You’ll see a lot of penny loafers and ankle boots as well.

Their style is more conservative, edgy, and masculine compared to American & French/Parisian styles. If you want to blend in without losing your personal sense of style, just try to stick with your dressy outfits and leave your relaxed athleisure alter ego at home. In other words, leave the sweats, the Crocs, and the Ugg boots behind (or reserve them for a different trip).

For a London fashion trip, a good fit is key.

Essential London Fashion Packing List

If you’re wondering what essential London style pieces you should pack, here’s our list!

White Button Down

There’s nothing more essential in a London fashion packing list than a good quality white button-down. A button-down can be a base for any outfit and can be reused many times in one trip. You can put on a vest, a coat, collar jewelry, or use it as a cover-up for a summer outfit. You’ll need a button-down in your London style wardrobe regardless of the season!

Knitted Vest

Having a knitted vest is both stylish and practical for London weather. It is resistant to chills and rainy weather, but it is also not as bulky and hot for a warm change in weather. You’ll know why a knitted vest is a must-have when you get there. During summer, you can even wear it as is. The best colors for vests are navy blue, black, and beige.

Thermal Tights Or Leggings

Before I recommend tights as a part of your packing list, I should emphasize that tights should not be worn as sports attire. As much as possible, try to steer away from sweater-and-leggings ensembles to avoid looking sluggish. Thermal tights can be worn under a dress or a skirt in fall or winter.

Turtleneck Long-Sleeved Top

Turtleneck tops are essential for a fall or winter trip, but they are also chic to wear with trousers if you’re feeling a minimal London style. This keeps you warm while making you look dressed up and tailored, even without accessories or a blazer. A plain turtleneck long-sleeved top is also perfect for balancing outfits with printed maxi skirts and pants.

¾ Sleeve Top

If you’re still unsure of the weather, a ¾-sleeved top is a good option. This keeps you warm when it’s a bit chilly, but it also does not restrict air when it turns sunny. It’s the best alternative to an outfit with a vest. During late fall or winter, you might want to tie a jacket around your shoulders when the cold gets unbearable.

Sleeveless Blouse or Tank Top

During the warmest days of summer, a sleeveless blouse comes in handy. If a dressy blouse is not something you have available, you can opt for plain sleeveless tank tops to pair with flowy maxi skirts or shorts. A tank top can also be used as a base for outfits with blazers. As much as possible, don’t wear tank tops with leggings to avoid looking lazy or sluggish (unless you’re going to the gym, of course).

Maxi Dress

Summer is for maxi dresses no matter where you are in the world! Maxi dresses create a summery, laid-back vibe that perfectly defines a trip for pleasure. Just be reminded that some maxi dresses can make you look touristy. To blend in with the locals, you might want to pick maxi dresses that are neutral in color. For your footwear, opt for walking sandals, instead of flip-flops, to avoid looking sloppy. Loafers are a great option too.

Trenchcoat

Every Londoner has their favorite trench coat – be it khaki, leather, or wool. Trench coats can often be seen during spring, fall, and some parts of summer when the breeze is cold.

I recommend bringing a trench coat regardless of the season you’re visiting London, especially if you’re not bringing any more cover-ups. They’re versatile, stylish, and chic, which makes them the perfect cover-up to wear in pictures. A trenchcoat is a London fashion must-have!

Rain Jacket

If you have more room to spare, a handy pocketable rain jacket can be useful, especially during the summer when the weather fluctuates from sunny to rainy. Rain jackets can also be utilized for early morning runs or quick gym sessions.

Compared to a bulky trench coat, a rain jacket is more sufficient, especially if you’re not meeting anyone from work or going on a smart-casual event. I especially recommend bringing a rain jacket for your London outfits if you’re visiting in the spring or summer.

Fleece Jacket

A fleece jacket is one of the layers you can utilize during the coldest months of the year. London winter can be really harsh and wet, so a thermal fleece jacket can be really useful in reducing the layers that you have to put in. You will only need a long-sleeved top, a pair of bottoms, and boots to finish off. Some people can get cold fast, so the layers still depend on how much you can tolerate.

Blazer

As mentioned earlier, Londoners love to wear tailored, smart, and masculine fits. A staple blazer can be used in different ways, even in outfits that are not meant for a smart-casual occasion. Personally, a blazer is something I’d wear to a museum visit. I’ll style them with dressy shorts and knee-high boots. For formal occasions, you can wear a matching blazer suit and loafers.

A blazer is a London fashion must-have for all four seasons!

Pleated Mini Skirt

London is a literary-inspired country, and it’s a great way to commemorate this style your way! For a chic academia look, you want to get a pleated mini skirt (school girl skirt) to pair with a vest ensemble. You can cover it with thermal tights or stockings if you need more leg coverage. This would be a perfect piece to wear in fall!

Midi Skirt

If there’s any piece as versatile as black shorts and black jeans, it would be a black midi skirt! Midi skirts are great for both brunch and evening dates or for sightseeing. If you’re looking for a midi skirt for the evening, you might want to look for skirts made with satin and velvet materials. A linen-cotton blend, rayon, or rib-knitted midi skirt is ideal for an airy, light feel for sight-seeing London outfits.

Dressy Shorts

A pair of dressy shorts can go a long way. They’re comfortable, airy, and easy to wear. Compared to sweat and denim shorts, dressy shorts can be worn with a minimal top without looking sloppy. Dressy shorts can be packed during late spring, summer, and early fall.

Denim Shorts

If you’re invested in denim shorts, bringing them to your London trip is no problem! You can pair your denim shorts with a dressy blouse to keep it smart and neat. This gives the outfit enough contrast to look good during sightseeing activities without sweating with trousers during the trip. You can pair them with walking sandals or loafers.

Classic Denim Jeans

Nobody can beat classic denim! If you’re up for classic casual looks, a pair of unbleached classics can be a luggage space saver. Classic, straight-leg jeans must be part of your London fashion packing list.

You can brew up to three or more different looks with just one pair. Since denim is made of thick fabric, it can be more resistant to dirt than trousers. Investing in a good one should not be hard to think about!

Black/Brown Trousers

If you’re used to wearing leggings, it’s time to switch them up with black or dark trousers, especially when you’re wondering what to wear in London to actually look like a local. Londoners have a pet peeve with sloppy outfits, especially if it consists of leggings and sweats. A tailored base like this can give you a free pass to wear a t-shirt.

Shoes To Wear In London

Shoes are just as important as clothing when it comes to London outfits! Here are our must-have shoes for your trip to London.

Ankle Boots

London weather fluctuates very often and wearing a pair of ankle boots as soon as you walk out the door shields you from anything that can happen, rain or shine. Ankle boots are also chic and edgy, which makes it a great statement piece for your outfit. Alternatively, you can wear combat boots, if that’s your style.

Penny Loafers

Universities in London influenced the use of penny loafers both inside and outside the campus. Penny loafers are classic pieces that go with any London-inspired, academia-styled outfit. They’re versatile, and good quality pairs usually last a really long time. You might want to get penny loafers with chain embellishments for extra shine.

Wedges are great alternatives to high heels because they elevate your fit without compensating for comfort. Wedges are, however, only limited to day trips. They are not suitable for wearing to formal events or dinners. If you have similar plans, you might want to stick with kitten heels or block heels instead.

Sandals (for sightseeing)

As much as possible, avoid wearing flip-flops, even when you’re out on a day tour. It is considered sluggish and lazy. Walking sandals made with tactical material or leather is the best options to keep a smart look, even with open-toed footwear. If possible, also try to avoid wearing Crocs or Uggs.

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats are dainty and feminine, perfect for adding contrast to a tomboy-style outfit or complimenting a flowy maxi dress. A pair of these are also useful when switching from heels after a long, exhausting night. Trust me, they’ll save you from blisters!

High Heels

High heels are a must-bring item if you’re visiting London. If you’re going for pleasure, you are likely to visit museums, restaurants, and tourist attractions requiring a formal dress code. If you have no plans, you can choose not to bring a pair. When spontaneity arises, you can always grab a pair when you get there.

London is often cold and windy as they tend to have shorter summers. This common occurrence affects the locals’ wardrobes, making them fond of all-terrain footwear like boots and loafers. It’s usually easy to spot a tourist when you see people who wear flip-flops, Crocs, and Uggs. Partly because they are American brands but mostly because they are not that flexible when weather fluctuations happen. Sports shoes are also worn scarcely but are certainly more accepted than the former.

What To Wear In London For Every Season

Wondering what to wear in London during a specific season? Scroll down to the time of year you’ll be visiting!

What To Wear In London During Spring

What to wear in London | London outfits | London fashion | London style

Although spring is a season of bloom for other parts of the world, London is usually bombarded with spontaneous rain showers and chilly evenings. It is a transition period between the coldest and hottest months after all, making it difficult to choose appropriate London outfits.

When we think of spring, we think of flowers, pastels, and bright colors. A great way to incorporate the blooming aura of the season is by adding one element of color to your outfit. It is important not to go overboard with colors as it can be too bold of an outfit for London. It is still crucial to remember that Londoners are particular with choosing neutral and visually palatable colors when coming up with their outfits.

Remember that it’s still not the right time to switch from your thermal coat to a thin jacket for your outerwear. In the first months of spring, there’s almost no difference from winter when it comes to London fashion so practical measures still have to be considered. Skirts and short dresses are great, but you might want to keep on the thermal tights and double layers to stay comfortable.

During the day, you might have to wear casual shoes that you would not mind getting wet in puddles or mud pools if you’re visiting the countryside. A nice pair of leather boots or waterproof sneakers are the best and most versatile options you can pack during this time of year. Heels can be worn later in the evenings, but a handy pair of ballet flats (that can at least get you through slippery streets safely) is good.

What To Wear In London During Summer

What to wear in London | London outfits | London fashion | London style

Like anywhere in the world, Summer is when you can wear anything you want without adding a thermal layer. From dresses, and skirts, to dressy shorts – the sky is the limit for London summer!

Bright days ahead are expected for most London summers. For a day trip, you might want to wear a maxi dress and a denim jacket for a bit of tailored contrast. You can switch up the dress for a sleek blazer, sleeveless top, and shorts for a neat and smart fit.

You can wear walking sandals or loafers freely as a part of your summer London outfits. Opt for a formal black or satin dress paired with high heels during the evenings. If you’re going somewhere more laid back, you can choose to wear ballet flats instead. However, I suggest not skipping the dress, mostly because a night in a historically rich city like this can be romantic regardless of who you’re traveling with.

Despite the sunshine, London will always be London and showers will happen. You’re wrong if you think you will not need outerwear in London during summer. A light jacket, a poncho perhaps, is something still useful to have. Shoes that you don’t mind getting wet is also a plus. For an easy outfit switch, a cardigan or a shawl comes in handy if you’re already set to wear a summer dress or a dressy sleeveless top.

What To Wear In London During Fall

What to wear in London | London outfits | London fashion | London style

If London had a personality, it would be Fall. You’ll notice that Londoners tend to wear clothes from fall all year round, just in lesser layers for warmer months. Londoners also love an earthy fall color palette of dark brown, khaki, navy blue, and olive green. Wearing those colors as part of your fall London outfits is definitely the move.

Fall is a lot like spring. The weather fluctuates very often and chilly sunny mornings are to be expected, but there is nothing cozier than a fall afternoon in one of the most romantic cities in the world. Fall in London is like a dream and London style is perfect for this season!

It’s time to pack your long-sleeved button-downs, knitted vests, midi skirts, trench coats, and knee-high boots for your London outfits. I personally love layering in fall because the weather is undemanding of bulky pieces. I tend to have more freedom to layer and manipulate my silhouette during the autumn season.

What To Wear In London During Winter

What to wear in London | London outfits | London fashion | London style

Visiting London in winter is not everyone’s cup of tea. But if you’re up for a visit, you’ll need adequate gear and proper outerwear to sustain comfort for your stay. And to me, it feels like London fashion is specifically geared towards winter, with lots of stylish coats and boots to get you through.

In winter, especially when it really gets cold, layers are important. Try to be creative with your layers if you don’t want to wear a bulky, heavy jacket. Play with fabrics and texture to add character, depth, and color to your London fashion fits.

A great foundation outfit you can consider wearing is a thermal turtleneck shirt, white jeans, trench coat, and scarf. You can also try a knitted sweater and a long leather coat. Footwear that you don’t mind getting wet, like waterproof shoes and/or chunky boots is also helpful. I personally recommend wearing boots with chunky lug soles because, aside from their trendy and chic look, they can keep you safe and dry from wet walkways.

Bacchanalia

The most fashionable restaurants

Bacchanalia, Mayfair

One of the city’s most beautiful places to dine , this new spot opened with roaring glitz and glamour at the beginning of 2023. Restaurant entrepreneur Richard Caring, not known for his muted taste, spared no expense here (the interiors are rumoured to have cost upwards of £25 million). With outposts in some of the world’s most lavish destinations ( Paris ,  Dubai , NYC – the list goes on), it’s no surprise Caviar Kaspia is a chic haunt during fashion season. Chiltern Firehouse, Marylebone

A classic but solid fashion week stalwart. Chiltern Firehouse has long beckoned in-the-know foodies craving the reliable food of head chef Luke Hunns. Keep one eye on the lookout for anyone from Cara Delevinge, Kate Moss and Suki Waterhouse, and the other firmly on the lunch menu – dishes like vodka tomato pizza topped with wild oregano, roasted courgettes with Brunswick blue cheese, walnuts and hot honey and hand-rolled pappardelle with girlies and pecorino make for a suitably modish schedule break.

Book a table in the decadent dining room, adorned with floral chairs, low-lit lamps and ornately corniced ceilings, and grab a well-deserved coffee break mid-schedule. The food changes seasonally, but dishes centre around Mediterranean classics, from ox cheek croquettes and artichoke fritters to twice-baked cheese soufflé and slow-roast pork shoulder with wild garlic.

Cafe Cecelia

Café Cecilia, Hackney

Here’s another relatively new opening where the hype is yet to die down. Max Rocha cut his teeth working in kitchens such as The River Cafe, St John Bread & Wine and Spring, but before he opened Café Cecilia – a sweet little canal-front spot – he was catering for fashion shoots and private events. Of course, that means everything from the interiors to the atmosphere to the ultra-miniminal, uber-local menu is bang on trend.

A Fashion Lover's Guide to London

Londons Carnaby Street, 1969

Forget shopping in Oxford Street and Covent Garden – the fashionable figures of London have a more eclectic little black book of recommendations. If you’re looking for the insider tips on how to enjoy a sartorially savvy getaway in the capital, read Culture Trip’s guide for fashion lovers.

Best shops in london for fashion lovers.

Dover Street Market, Haymarket

Bringing together the who’s who in fashion, Rei Kawakubo’s groundbreaking fashion-meets-art gallery concept store is a must-visit destination for fashion lovers. Expect to see fresh names such as Molly Goddard mixed in with Gucci and Junya Watanabe and, of course, a slew of Comme des Garçons fashion. Head downstairs for the most affordable curation of products, dwell on the middle floors for sartorial inspiration and investment pieces, and refresh yourself in the Rose Bakery , where a slice of green tea cake is highly recommended.

Capital Carboot Sale, Pimlico

Bargain hunters should head down to Pimlico’s famous car boot sale for a morning of rummaging. Open every Sunday, dedicated shoppers are likely to pick up designer items and vintage treasures for a fraction of the original price. While general admission is from 11.30 for £1, it’s worth paying the £5 early-bird entry at 10.15 to optimise your browsing and hustling time.

Wonderland Pop Up, Central London

A new pop up from Wonderland magazine brings their creative ethos to life , with a space dedicated to celebrating and presenting new and emerging talent. Located in Piccadilly, the store not only stocks exciting designers such as Markus Lupfer , Stussy, Nicopanda , Blood Brother and Christopher Shannon, but will also host talks and events throughout its six month tenure in the Crown Estate. Visitors can also get their hands on Wonderland products, including sweatshirts and tote bags.

Browns, Central London

A bastion of fashion in London , this newly refurbished boutique on South Molton Street was founded by Joan & Sidney Burstein in 1970, and was one of the first to stock international and emerging designers. Today, the emphasis on supporting new talent continues, rendering the boutique a must-visit for those looking for a slick curation of exciting design.

The Collaborative Store

Although it started out as a pop-up, The Collaborative Store has finally set up permanent residence on Blandford Street in London’s Marylebone. The minimalist interior plays host to a stand out selection of emerging brands such as Bad Denim and D.Effect alongside British eyewear brand Finlay & Co and jewellery designers Myia Bonner.

The collaborative store

Diverse, Tufnell Park

A long-time North London resident, Diverse has been dressing its loyal customers since 1987. Previously on Islington’s Upper Street, the store is now located on Fortess Road in Tufnell Park. Don’t let this extra schlep up the Northern Line deter you from visiting – the range of contemporary brands is excellent, as is the service. After shopping, jump across the road for a cup of tea at Bear + Wolf, and then stroll up to Hampstead Heath .

LN-CC, Dalston

This über- cool concept store in Dalston is slightly off the beaten track, but well worth the journey. Housing contemporary menswear and womenswear brands within a futuristic-designed store, the slick edit of designers is guaranteed to be among the most niche and in-the-know you’ll find. Walk-in appointments are offered, although for specialist requests, make sure you book a slot in advance.

Best places for fashion lovers to eat in London

Aquavit restaurant, Central London

This recently opened Swedish restaurant is the optimal place to revel in Scandi-Chic. The menu includes Nordic delicacies such as Skagenröra (shrimp salad), herring, gravadlax, and Venice roe, as well as Swedish meatballs for only £16. The Nordic cuisine is complemented by its interior design, including beautiful Marta Maas Fjetterstrom rugs created by artist Olafur Eliasson – the perfect backdrop for your outfit shot.

Where fashion lovers hang out in London

Ray’s Bar, Dalston

For a real fashion hangout, head east to Ray’s Bar in Dalston, where revelers will find themselves surrounded sartorially savvy figures. Whether you’re reclining by the bar, grabbing a pizza slice or going the whole (Pam) Hogg on the dance floor, you’re guaranteed to have a fun-filled evening. For further people-watching, make sure you grab an early evening drink in the Ace Hotel , home to J.W.Anderson’s only London store and a regular hangout spot for fashion’s finest.

What fashion lovers must see in London

The Victoria and Albert Museum, South Kensington

Having hosted some of the most significant fashion exhibitions of yore – notably Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty – the V&A offers an endless rostrum of insightful, thought-provoking exhibitions, alongside a wonderful permanent collection. A must-visit for any fashion-loving London visitor.

The Store, Central London

With a fresh new update to its name, The Store at 180 the Strand is a new creative space that mixes fashion, art, music, food and work. Stop by for new exhibitions or make a calculated walk past it during London Fashion Week Collections: Men – the official home of the event will be a hotspot for male models and street style stars.

London Fashion

London Fashion

Looking for style ideas for your upcoming trip to London? London fashion has its own distinct style, especially when compared to American fashion.

When traveling abroad, you don’t want to blend in, but you don’t want to announce yourself as a tourist either.

As you pack your outfits for London , follow these tips. You’ll turn heads and stand out, but for all the right reasons.

Keep it cool with classic colors

When it comes to their fashion color wheel, you might say Londoners use foggy skies and rainy weather as inspiration. Stay on trend with classic colors like black, navy blues, creme, and beige. You can never go wrong with any of those.

Stay classy

London fashion is more traditional, just like their color choices. Generally, London fashion looks more put together and less slouchy than American fashion.

It’s common to see collared shirts and blouses, paired with blazers and skirts. There is a reason Princesses Kate and Meghan are fashion icons here.

But, please, feel free to wear pants when you want. High-waisted trousers in solid colors or plaids are always a good option.

Extra room in your suitcase? Pack a hat

To really go for the princess look, don’t forget your headpiece. Hats are very popular in London. They tie the whole look together. They’re also very handy for keeping you warm (and your makeup intact) during those inevitable moments of drizzle and rain.

Girl in coat standing in front of London Bridge

Cozy up with a coat

Speaking of weather, London is the place to wear layers. Pack with finicky weather in mind. It rains, it gets cold, and it can be surprisingly windy.

Trench, long line, and pea coats are very much in. Longline coats and blazers look stylish in the spring and fall, while trench or pea coats with a true closure are preferred for those cooler winter months. Just make sure the material is waterproof.

Your outerwear can follow the same rainy color scheme as the rest of your outfit. Or, take the opportunity to get a bit more wild with tartans, plaids, bold and classic prints.

Swap your socks for tights

Londoners love their tights. They’re perfect for fall weather and keeping your legs warm even if you’re wearing a skirt in the rain.

Pair your tights with a smart pair of trouser shorts or a cute skirt. For shoes, go for lace-up or ankle boots.

Shoes are made for walkin’

London is a commute-by-subway city. When you’re not swiping your Oyster card on the Tube, you’ll be walking around town.

Translation: you need to pack comfy shoes. Cute flats and ankle boots are your friends, any time of year. Fortunately, they tend to pair very well with the outfits that are trendy in London, whether you’re more of a traditionalist or a punk-rock girl.

Embrace the funk

Girl wearing hat in London

Camden is one of those parts of London with an underlying punk rock feel that people truly embrace.

If you have a flair for the bold, dress to your heart’s content. Think bright red colors, unique silhouettes, and paying homage to the 90s. Bust out the ol’ Doc Martens!

Summer Styles in London

Is it ever warm in London? Thankfully, yes! If you’re heading across the pond during the summertime, prepare for warmer weather.

It doesn’t get quite “hot” in London, so many of the outfits share a similar vibe year-round. Trousers, skirts, rompers, and blouses are still in during the summer — just leave the coat and tights at home.

If you’re comfortable in booties, pack them. Otherwise, feel free to swap them out for wedges or strappy (but still walkable) sandals.

We hope these tips for dressing in London help you feel the best-dressed tourist around. Until then…

Roam often, stay stylish.

24 Top London & U.K. Packing List Items for 2024 + What to Wear & NOT to Bring

24 Top London & U.K. Packing List Items for 2024 + What to Wear & NOT to Bring

London is where old-world charm and modern lifestyles live side by side. Some of the greatest literary minds have originated from London, and this place is brimming with history!

From Buckingham palace to The Harry Potter Studio, incredible sights can be enjoyed in almost every part of the city. To help you pack, my husband and I (pictured) created the below checklist of must-have items for the United Kingdom.

You’ll also find sections on what to wear in London , along with what NOT to bring and some pro-tips and guidance from our own experiences. Cheers!

Asher and I in London in Londno during our honeymoon.

What to Pack for London – 24 Essentials

1. windproof travel umbrella.

London’s rain is a well-expected charm. From light drizzles to hardy downpours, the U.K. certainly necessitates an umbrella. Be sure to pack one that’s wind-resistant, lightweight, and compacts down so that you can carry it easily when you’re not using it.

If you bring a full-sized one, you may end up regretting the bulk. And if you wait to buy one from a street vendor, it will be extremely overpriced and low quality. This set comes with a nice carrying case and is perfectly packable!

2. Jet Lag Relief

A time change and an international journey put most people into a fog of jet lag. I use this natural remedy since it works proactively to prevent that exhaustion and discomfort. Made with chamomile and natural energizers, you’ll be ready to explore palaces and romanticize your life without all the dreary drowsiness. Bonus points for being able to use it on the way there and on the return trip home!

3. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

The U.K. has been vulnerable to massive cyberattacks and hackers are only getting more ruthless by the day. After having my credit card number stolen while staying in Paris, I never take a chance with my online security when overseas. I now use a Virtual Private Network everywhere I travel, and anytime I connect to unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks in little pubs, libraries, airports, hotels, and more. A good VPN (such as NordVPN ) is an affordable way to add a layer of encryption to your online data. It will ensure you don’t wake up with a drained PayPal account or a stolen identity just because you surfed the web at a random dive bar.

Additionally, a VPN is designed to remove restrictions to your internet access in places where browsing may be censored, monitored, or limited. Did you know you might not be able to access Netflix or YouTube in parts of Europe? We love using a VPN to have a TRULY private network, and will never risk our security or unlimited access again.

4. Luxury Packing Cubes

Organization is the key to effectively packing for international trips. These packing cubes make life so much easier by compressing bulky items into smaller sizes and keeping similar items like t-shirts, pants, and essentials compartmentalized. They are a total GAME-CHANGER!

Available on HeroTravelSupply.com with an exclusive 15% discount using the coupon code “HERO” .

5. Gorgeous Outfit

London nightlife has made history since the times of Charles Dickens and The Beatles. It is absolutely not to be missed and there are countless amazing restaurants, pubs, clubs, and theatre opportunities to check out.

I suggest bringing at least one really killer outfit that you feel comfortable walking in, as you will more than likely be taking the tube and walking a fair bit. I love this jumpsuit because it’s inexpensive, doesn’t wrinkle easily, and looks stunning on many different body types.

6. Travel Insurance for London

London is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Can you imagine paying out-of-pocket if something like a broken arm or stolen luggage occurs? Trust me. I know from experience how a change in flight or an accident will quickly rack up mega bills. And a hospital trip alone could reach five-figures since most domestic providers do not follow you across the pond (including Medicare and Medicaid, eh-hm ).

Faye is the best insurer we’ve found for a multitude of reasons. While most providers make you plead your case, fill out heaps of paperwork, and make the process as difficult as possible – Faye is the opposite. They allow you to make claims directly on your phone and get reimbursed quickly. They even allow you to “cancel for any reason” so long as it’s within 15 days of booking your trip. Faye is the real deal, and for such a low cost, it’s well worth it for peace of mind against cancellations, theft, baggage loss, medical emergencies, and more.

7. UK Power Adapter

The U.K. power outlets are not the same as those in the U.S.; while you don’t need a power converter, you will need a reliable power adapter. Many low-quality adapters will be risky and could damage your devices. Keep your phone and other valuables safe by using an adapter with a built-in fuse protector.

This one is our go-to because it works in over 100 popular countries and is backed by a lifetime replacement guarantee , so it’s the last adapter you’ll ever need to buy.

8. Hanging Toiletry Bag

I love this gorgeous toiletry bag! And for the price, it can’t be beat. Most London flats and hotels have small bathrooms with countertop space that would make you consider pulling your hair out… Sometimes, you’ll only have a sink with no storage, this is why the Brits appropriately name their bathrooms ‘water closets!’

Use this hanging toiletries bag to convert any door, shower pole, or hook into a shelf. It will help you maintain your self-care routine (and your sanity), transforming the packing experience into something painless… Something almost… dare I say, fun! It holds plenty of TSA-approved bottles and is generally way better than fumbling around with multiple plastic bags in your suitcase.

hanging toiletry bag

9. Quick-Dry Travel Towel

Travel towels are a life-hack you didn’t know you needed. Hotel towels are bulky, fluffy, and get in the way. Some hotels won’t even allow you to take towels with you, so a smaller one is more multi-purposeful. This one is made of quality microfibers and dries 10x faster than cotton, making it great for travelers that need a quick towel, seat cover, beach blanket, rain shield, wrap, etc. It’s very absorbent and weighs next to nothing.

travel towel

10. Stylish Raincoat

The U.K. rains year-round, so you must be prepared for unpredictable weather. But London’s play does not stop on account of some grey clouds! This is part of the city’s appeal and can be quite romantic if embraced. Regardless, London is also the cosmopolitan hub of the country, so an overly-casual rain jacket is not ideal if you’re trying to blend in. Opt for a more upscale rain jacket; this navy trenchcoat is sophisticated but practical since it’s water-resistant and adds a bit of warmth.

Stylish Raincoat

11. Luggage Straps

These adjustable luggage straps have saved the day for us on numerous occasions! Including when we had to jimmy-rig my friend’s suitcase together after it broke.

The belt is heavy-duty and TSA-approved and the straps are made to withstand more than 700-lbs of force-tension (which you may need with the way suitcases are handled these days!) It will extend the life of your luggage since your zippers won’t have to work as hard to compress all of your British souvenirs and Harrod’s shopping finds. And not to scare you, but Heathrow has been called “the UK’s worst airport for lost luggage,” so you’ll be thankful for the built-in contact card and brightly-colored straps that will make your belongings super easy to identify.

luggage straps

12. Comfortable, Attractive Flats

Since you’ll be on your feet all day navigating a mix of cobblestone, pavement, or brick, you won’t want to risk wearing heels or uncomfortable shoes. That said, it’s still nice to look cute in London and a pair of fun flats are a thoughtful addition to your packing list. They come in a dozen colors, add a bit of spice to your outfit, and simultaneously ensure your safety and comfort. Break them in a bit before departing and pack along blister balm for good measure.

Comfortable, Attractive Flats

13. Neck Wallet to Avoid Pickpockets!

Pickpockets are unfortunately extremely common in London, especially at crowded touristic attractions like Big Ben, Picadilly Square, and Westminster. That’s why I highly recommend you bring a wearable neck wallet.

I don’t take chances with my credit cards, phone, cash, and passport, and this cute little pouch hides all these items securely around my neck (or under my shirt), yet it’s still easy to get to when I need something from it. This one also comes with RFID-blocking technology so “e-thieves” can’t scan your wallet from a distance!

Neck Wallet to Avoid Pickpockets!

14. Discounted Tickets to London Attractions

Many of the best things to see and do in London also have atrociously long lines. Get Your Guide is our favorite booking service for the best excursions in town. Instead of baking in the sun or dripping in the rain for hours – opt for skip-the-line tickets that allow you to jump to the front door without a wait!

Newcomers may consider a Hop-on-Hop-off sightseeing tour to get an immediate lay of the land, while every visitor should see the classics like The London Eye , the historic Tower of London , or the sacred Westminster Abbey , (the final resting place of many royals and famous literary minds). History lovers may want to venture on a daytrip to Stonehenge and The Roman Baths or Shakespeare’s home .

15. Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger

We never travel without a portable charger because you never know when you’ll end up in a pickle with a low battery. Whether you need GPS or you’re stranded far from the hotel (sometimes I’ve forgotten the address or needed to look up something but my phone was dead) – this portable charger will keep you from scrambling in an emergency. Even if you have access to an outlet, you’ll need an adapter in the U.K., so this lipstick-sized charger will be the simplest way to repower your devices on-the-go.

16. Luggage Locks

From trains to planes to taxis, it’s important to keep your belongings secure and safe from theft with luggage locks. This set of two luggage locks will do just the trick. They’re TSA-approved, lightweight, but super durable. I wear them on my backpack while exploring town since petty thieves will often prey upon baggage that is behind you or out of sight. You can explore stress-free because they’re 10x harder to crack than a typical 3-digit lock.

17. Stylish Anti-Theft Daybag

Navigating London is exciting and you will need a fashionable daybag like this one to carry your essentials (water, phone, camera, snacks, etc.) . Nonetheless, the locals are stylish and you don’t want to appear as a blatant tourist because pickpockets are more likely to target you. This bag is actually made for theft prevention, with layers of discreet straps and braided tape. Plus, nothing feels quite like genuine leather!

Stylish Anti-Theft Daybag

18. Activated Charcoal (Food Poisoning Fix)

Digestive ailments are extremely common among travelers due to the exposure to new foods and drinks and the stress of traveling itself. I love how easily activated charcoal can handle travelers’ diarrhea and stomach upset. It works by absorbing toxins that may be in your system and calming your digestive tract so you can return to normal as quickly as possible.

Note: We mainly recommend these in cases of food poisoning or immediate detox of harmful bacteria. But when needed, they can certainly save you a day of pain and distress.

Activated Charcoal (Food Poisoning Fix)

19. Reusable Bottle Bags (Leak-Proof)

After tasting the local spirits, inevitably, you will want to bring home a bottle or two. These anti-impact bottle sleeves protect your most precious glass varietals. You can use it for more than alcohol , such as protecting your luxury perfumes, oils, soaps, or any glass items that need cushioning.

Easily pack these in your checked bag without worrying about any leaks in transit since they have thick bubble padding to prevent broken bottles. They’re also reusable – what’s not to love?

 Reusable Bottle Bags (Leak-Proof)

20. Packable “Just in Case” Bag

London is a place where you should do some shopping – point blank . The Europeans are blessed with getting fashionable trends 2-3 years before Americans and souvenirs make wonderful gifts for your loved ones. This “just in case” bag is perfect for all of those unpredictable purchases since it counts as a personal item on the plane.

I’d recommend checking out some U.K. goods like locally-blended tea leaves, Yorkshire rhubarb gin, wine, Harry Potter merch, books, fresh jams, Shakespeare mementos, and whatever gems you find at Harrods!

Just in Case bag

21. Cooling Towels

I’m guessing that a trip to London does not conjure up expectations of tropical weather. This is true of course, but London can get hot and air-conditioning does not exist in every location. The most surprising to me was on the trains. Public transport is the best way to get around this vibrant city but when you discover that there are no cooling systems, it can be quite intense.

These towels provide instant relief and the effect lasts for 30-60 minutes. To extend the benefit, I just wet the towel, wring out, and wrap it around my neck for cooling comfort.

towel pink

22. Natural Hangover Relief Pills

If you care to indulge in the British pub scene, it’s something to behold. You should definitely check out local drinking holes like ‘Experimental Cocktail Club,’ ‘Nine Lives,’ and roof-top views like ‘12th Knot.’ But be sure to start (or end) your night with some hangover-prevention pills.

These work to detoxify your liver and remove the alcohol more quickly, relieving potential headaches and fatigue. Time is precious in Europe and you want to feel tip-top every day of your trip! Bring these as a precaution and you won’t be sorry.

hangover pills

23. Prepaid European SIM Phone Card

London is calling. But your domestic provider would love to charge you outrageous roaming rates. Don’t give them the pleasure – a traveler’s hack is to get a prepaid SIM card for your phone. It will have a given amount of data (typically 10-50 gigabytes for short-duration stays), and any local vendor can instantly connect your phone.

This one is compatible with 30 major European cities and allows you to send 1,000 texts. Unlock your phone before you leave and prepare to do as the Londoners do!

Prepaid European SIM Phone Card

24. Wellies (AKA Rainboots)

London ladies will need a pair of wellingtons (or “wellies” as the locals call them). These rain boots originated in 19th century and are a staple in British footwear. Pack a pair and whip them out if the weather looks risky, they will keep your feet dry in sudden downpours or muddy areas. You will feel cute and comfortable while exploring since this brand offers the chicest wellies I’ve ever seen in a variety of beautiful designs.

What to Wear in London

UK fashion tends to be a bit dressier in most areas – London is a good example of this. Most places you’ll visit will be ones in which you’ll want to look nice. Think business casual or at least nice casual – no ripped or torn jeans, bare midriffs, or gawdy apparel. Locals follow these quidelines, so it’s better to fit in by dressing accordingly.

Wear in london

Women in London have a smart, stylish look. Create versatile outfits and save on packing space by choosing black or dark grey pants, shirts, and dresses that form the basis of any outfits. Pair them with a pop of color with sweaters, scarves, and jewelry. Ankle boots are a popular choice for footwear that works well with leggings and a dress or skinny pants and long sweaters. Finish the look with a scarf and leather jacket to blend in with other Londoners. What should MEN wear in London? – (Click to expand) Below is a sample men’s clothing list. Packing for the Seasons in London

Spring – march, april, may:.

Spring is a season of great variation in weather in Great Britain. One day may be warmer and sunny, while the next could be rainy and overcast. Tourism is light during this season, so if you can handle the weather it’s a great time to visit.

Plan to be prepared for anything with regard to your wardrobe: cute layers (think nice cardigans and shirts ) and a dependable rain coat , just in case rains interrupt your day. Temperatures average around 45°F to 60°F (7°C to 15°C).

SUMMER – June, July, August:

Summers are delightfully mild in London. Rains can happen so it’s still best to plan accordingly. For the most part, summer travelers will enjoy easy conditions, which is why this is also the height of tourist season.

FALL – September, October, November:

This is the rainiest part of the year in London. Tourists during this time of year will enjoy smaller crowds, but will need to pack for a wet trip! Umbrella , scarves , fashionable raincoat , and boots are a good idea. Temperatures average around 55°F to 65°F (12°C to 18°C).

WINTER – December, January, February:

Temperatures are milder here in the winter than in many parts of the world, and rain is also common in this season. Snow is not unheard of, so be sure to pack warm clothes such as: heavier waterproof coats , hats and gloves , and scarves if you’ll be traveling during this time! Parks & Picnic – London has many beautiful parks all over the city and a favorite pastime for Londoners is picnicking and Pimm’s (a very popular summer drink). Some of the best parks include Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, and the Crystal Palace. Wear dark colors that won’t stain if you sit on the grass. Fitted jeans or shorts and t-shirt are the best options for both men and women. Also, don’t forget to bring a nice pair of shades.

Museums – The majority of museums in London are free to visit. The British Museum, National Gallery, and Victoria and Albert Museum can’t be missed! Dress smart in fitted clothing and avoid t-shirts with graphics. Trousers and cardigans are a good choice. Also, bring a pashmina or scarf in case it is cool inside.

What NOT to Take to London and the U.K.

1. don’t pack lots of electronics.

I recommend packing your phone, a Kindle , and maybe a laptop, but don’t bring much more than that. It’s not worth the risk of bringing unnecessary electronics and having them lost or stolen.

2. DON’T BRING too many/heavy items

The one exception here is winter clothes. If you’re going during the colder months, you will definitely need them. Otherwise, save yourself the luggage fees – and the back pain!

3. DON’T TAKE hiking-style gear

While this stuff is certainly appropriate for outdoor sports in the UK, and you may need it if you’re on a more extensive trip that includes hiking, it’s otherwise pointless to have in London, and you’ll stick out like a sore thumb.

4. DON’T PACK anything that screams “hapless tourist!”

Please leave your fanny packs, money belts, and I love New York t-shirts at home. Likewise, decking yourself out in Union Jack or American flag paraphernalia is just not done here. They’re not as obsessed with either flag as we seem to be.

5. DON’T TAKE hairdryers

These eat up a good deal of space in your luggage and most hostels/hotels have them on hand for guests anyway.

6. DON’T BRING valuable or irreplaceable items

This is a no-brainer. Leave your expensive and irreplaceable things at home to avoid the risk of loss, theft, or damage.

FAQs about London Travel

1. what is a good basic daily budget for london.

decker bus

Even budget travelers will easily find themselves coming in at over $100 per day. All those Tube rides add up and it’s hard to find a hostel dorm bed in a central spot for less than $30. If you plan on staying in a private hotel room, expect to pay a lot more for the privilege. Admissions to popular attractions like the Tower of London can also be pretty pricey.

The good news here is that most of the local parks, some of them famous in their own right, are free to the public. So are the major museums in town, such as the British Museum.

2. Do I need to tip in London restaurants?

When purchasing takeaway or drinks at the pubs, you aren’t expected to leave a tip. The rules are slightly different in sit-down restaurants. It’s becoming standard practice to leave 10% of your total bill or just the change if you didn’t order much.

Wait staff in most of Europe, including Britain, are paid minimum wage by law so they’re not completely dependent on tips like their American counterparts. However, don’t let your generosity run away with you. Check your bill first. Some places will automatically put a so-called service charge on your tab. This is the equivalent of a prepaid tip, but you don’t have to pay it if your service was bad or you feel it’s unfairly high.

Of course, feel free to leave as much as you like for excellent service. Just keep in mind that American sized tips of 20% or more are considered exorbitant in England. Likewise, if you want to make sure the waiters keep the money for themselves, it is best to hand them cash even if you’re paying with a card.

3. When’s the best time to visit London?

Modern London

In general, the spring is a great time to visit most of Europe. This includes London, particularly if you were planning on stopping at places like Kew Gardens to see the flowers in full bloom. Although warmer and drier weather is far more likely in the summer, you’re going to pay for it with higher prices and larger crowds in popular spots.

I hate cold weather so I’d probably never come to England in the depths of winter. But I definitely think that it’s worth dealing with a few overcast days to have relatively quiet travel conditions. Of course, your own thoughts may vary on that score.

4. What are my transportation options for getting to/from London from the nearby airports?

Where it is possible to use either the Tube or the Express Trains, those are your best options. If you’re not in a hurry or money is tight, taking the bus is also perfectly fine. However, taxis aren’t recommended because they’re both expensive and time-consuming.

5. What if I don’t particularly like fish and chips, can I still find decent food to eat?

London Tea

Yes! Although I personally wouldn’t skip that particular dish, English food has changed a lot in recent years and become more than just your typical pub grub. There are plenty of different cuisine styles available in London and many of them are even at reasonable prices.

However, if you’re pressed for cash, try the French chain Pret-a-Manger. It’s basically like the European version of Panera Bread. I am now hooked on their pickle sandwiches (about £3).

6. Are there any areas of London that I should avoid?

Like any major city, London has its fair share of petty crime but the city center is generally considered a very safe place to visit. Just hold on to your belongings and make sure your luggage is secure at all times (even in your hostel room) to avoid any issues.

7. Can you suggest some good day trips from London?

Oxford aerial

Oxford, Bath, Cambridge, and Brighton seem to be the ones most commonly mentioned. I personally enjoyed Bath a great deal. It’s a beautiful spa town that dates back to Roman times but was particularly popular during the 1800s. It also makes a good base for visiting nearby places such as Glastonbury, Wells, and Stonehenge. Brighton is another popular day trip from London. It was a favorite beach destination for the Crown Prince in the early part of the 19th century but really gained steam four decades later when the rail lines came into town. Now it’s a bit faded but is nonetheless known for its antiques and bohemian vibe.

Oxford and Cambridge are famous college towns with lengthy histories. Students of both are known to enjoy spending their free time punting on the nearby rivers. Oxford most notably served as a filming location for the Harry Potter movies and there’s plenty for fans of the series to see. Meanwhile, Cambridge makes a good base for visiting the rest of East Anglia including the nearby countryside towns of Ely and Peterborough, which are both home to ancient cathedrals and other interesting sites.

8. Is London a safe place to visit?

Yes. London is among the safest places to travel to, though all travelers should take basic precautions. Along with those recommendations made above, travelers ahould aoid walking alone at night and should never carry excessive cash or valuables. Plan your routes and transportation ahead of time to feel more condifent about your day and your whereabouts.

Likewise, familiarize yourself with common scams that might be used against you to avoid becoming a victim. Just use the same caution you would exercise in any city and you should be just fine, even at night. London is even a safe place for women traveling alone – very few problems arise as long as basic safety measures are followed. Research safety here if you’re concerned!

9. What should I do if my clothing or luggage vanished or was forgotten en route?

While second-hand shops can be found in England if you’re willing to hunt for them, there aren’t any major ones like there are in the United States. Your best bet for finding clothes at affordable prices are nationally recognized discount chains like Primark.

10. Do I need to buy a map of the Tube before I go?

London underground

Not at all! There are perfectly good pocket-sized Tube maps that are available for free at most stations. There are also large city maps on the station walls by the outside doors. These can help you figure out which way to go in order to reach your destination after you depart the premises. What is also really handy, is using your phone to download a free Tube map or using an app like Google Maps that will help you navigate the Tube.

11. What’s the deal with the Oyster Card?

The Oyster Card is a good way to save money on public transport in London because tickets for bus and Tube rides are considerably cheaper if they’re not bought individually. If you plan on using or needing a lot of rides in a 24 hour period, using the card means that transportation will never cost you more than a set amount. Oyster Cards can be bought at any Tube station for a £5 deposit as well as how much you want to put on the card. You fill up the card on the machine readers when you enter the Tube or bus and again when you exit. Once you’re done with it, you can cash it out at one of the machines and get your £5 back as well as any money that’s left on it.

I Just Got Back From London and Saw These 6 Trends Everywhere

Caitlin Burnett

I was recently lucky enough to spend a few weeks in Europe, stopping first in the United Kingdom before heading to the South of France. I spent my first week in London, a city that is always fun for a fashion observer like myself. The style in London is much more polished, especially compared to California, where we tend to have a more relaxed take on fashion. I love walking around the city and taking in all the street style, noting the more  refined way of dressing that feels both quintessentially British and right on the pulse of current trends.

I noticed a few summer trends London fashion people have fallen particularly hard for, spotting the same handful of pieces all over the city. While the unpredictable London weather plays a role in which trends take off, certain summer styles marry seamlessly with the city's elevated aesthetic. TikTok's favorite  quiet-luxury trend , for example, is just normal style in the UK's capital. Like every transatlantic visit, I returned from my trip feeling inspired to introduce some of London's favorite trends into my everyday wardrobe. And since London's weather is a bit cooler than California's, most of these are items I can wear straight through fall. From tailored trousers to summer's prettiest shoe style, these are the six best London trends to add to your wardrobe.

COTTON TRENCH COATS

best-london-trends-308245-1690843587134-main

Summer in London hits differently than summer in California, as rain and clouds frequently interrupt the sunshine. That's why the London fashion set are pros at styling a summer coat. This year is all about the classic cotton trench. The canvas or cotton material is lightweight enough for higher temperatures but will protect you from the frequent showers London is known for. Tailored basics like this are poised to be huge for fall, so this is one coat style well worth the investment.

Treasure & Bond + Stretch Cotton Trench Coat

Trousers aren't a new trend in London, but they're currently having a moment in the fashion world. I saw trousers paired with everything from ribbed tanks to matching vests to oversize button-downs. Whether it's a slouchy low-rise pair or a classic tailored silhouette, trousers are a staple of British summer style.

Reformation + Stevie Pant

TAILORED SHORTS

best-london-trends-308245-1690845273468-main

For those rare hot summer days, women in London turn to tailored shorts to replace their favorite trousers. The elevated silhouette still feels polished paired with everything from T-shirts to collared shirts, and I prefer the linen and cotton of tailored shorts to denim any day.

Reformation + Mason High Waist Shorts

BALLET FLATS

best-london-trends-308245-1690418966932-main

Women in London have fully embraced summer's prettiest shoe trend: ballet flats. These add extra polish to a sundress or tailored shorts, although I especially love them with jeans as Lucy Williams styled above. Ballet flats are only going to get more popular for fall, so I plan to stock up now.

Jeffrey Campbell + Dancerina Ballet Flat

RIBBED DRESSES

best-london-trends-308245-1690844566076-main

Step aside, maxi dresses. London is all about ribbed midi silhouettes at the moment. Not only is this style flattering, but the ribbed texture provides an elevated detail to even a basic tank dress. Dress this up or down easily with a simple shoe swap for a true day-to-night piece.

& Other Stories + Fitted Midi Tank Dress

BUTTON-DOWNS

best-london-trends-308245-1690845381039-main

Nobody styles a button-down shirt quite like women in London, and this layering basic is officially everywhere this summer. Whether it's a classic white style or one adorned with stripes, British fashion people are all in on the timeless style. This is another classic piece that's set to gain even more steam come fall.

Reformation + Will Oversize Cotton Button-Up Shirt

Trends I’m Bringing Home From My Fashion Trip In London

  • Men's Fashion , Women's Fashion

Retail stores and shops in London, England

My idea of an ideal vacation is to go to a destination where I leave inspired.  I will always choose a bustling city over a beach where I can immerse myself in culture, fashion and the daily lifestyle.  I feel alive when walking within the neighborhoods, people watching and catching glimpses of local fashion.   As a fashion capitol of the world, London has been high on my list of places to visit.  So, when the stars aligned to bring an England trip into my world for 2022, I started planning my “Fashion Trip in London”.   What do you do on a fashion trip, you ask?  Well, the itinerary called for retail visits, shopping brands I’ve only had access to virtually, hitting up fashion museums and, of course, admiring the street style.

Everywhere I turned, I felt the fashion energy.  Each corner I turned served up more inspiration and fashion moments than I could have ever imagined.  On top of a perfect trip, I also happened to be visiting at the transition into fall, which meant style consisted of looks ready for my favorite season of the year to dress for.

Since I’m all about sharing what I learn and giving you guys tips to incorporate into your wardrobe. I’m rounding up three key takeaways. You better believe I’ll be using all of these tips and if you’re one of my clients, I’m coming at you with all the London energy.  Read below to channel your inner Londoner this season.

Fashion in London Tip #1 – Get Yourself Some Hosiery

Living in a cold climate like London, layers are your best friend.  While I am a huge fan of leggings under trousers or wide-leg jeans, pants are not always an everyday occurrence.   Londoners know how to do it right with the use of hosiery to “winterize” dresses and skirts. While on my fashion trip in London I saw many women using this little style secret.  From a classy woman sitting in front of the Burberry store on Saville Row in her pleated skirt and nude colored tights, to the girl traveling on the Tube in her sheer black pair with her mini skirt. Adding in this extra layer is the key to rocking those skirts or dresses all season long.  If you’re not sure where to start, I suggest three pairs to begin with.

Add Some Warmth

Opaque is the opposite of sheer, meaning they won’t be see-through at all.  Opaque tights range in thickness or denier and will keep you nice and toasty.  Since these will be your warmest pair, you really can wear them alongside any skirt or dress.  Looking for even extra warmth, throw on a cute pair of socks over your tights. If you’re only going to buy one pair, go for the Ultimate Opaque Matte pair from Commando. Constructed with a thicker waistband, these will be comfortable throughout the day without digging into your skin.

See-Through Sheer

Second pair to add to cart? A black sheer pair to show a little skin.  These work great with mini dresses and skirts, as you’ll be showing off more of your leg and it helps give the outfit a little dimension. Living in the Pacific Northwest, we have to get creative otherwise our mini skirts and dresses are put away for fall.  Sheer tights give you the ability to keep wearing your minis in the cold.  Break out your LBD (little black dress), sheer tights and a killer pair of heels for a sexy night out look.  Skims has quickly become one of my favorite lingerie brands and their hosiery does not disappoint.  Try o ut their sheer full control tights , which have just the right amount of sheerness.

In The Nude

Lastly, you’ll need a nude pair. You can choose between an opaque or sheer pair, or better yet, buy both.  I loved seeing these styled subtly within some of the most fashion forward looks in London.  You’d never guess a nude hosiery could be so chic. Luckily, today there are many shade ranges available for nude tights.  Opt for your skin tone when purchasing these tights as you’ll be wearing them to give you the naked leg appearance. A favorite amongst the royal family and no stranger to shade inclusivity, Heist is a great brand to shop for nude tights.

Commando / Skims / Heist

Fashion in London Tip #1 – Nail the Small Details

Elevating a simple look with unique details is nothing new, but the British really nail this styling trick. On a packed Tube ride during rush hour, a man entered opposite me.  For several stops I could only see his face and then, suddenly, as the car emptied, I saw his outfit and it was like opening a present.  He was wearing a simple look, with a pleated trouser and blazer set.  But underneath the blazer, he wore a fishnet top, a dainty pearl necklace and a silver choker. His might have been my favorite look of the trip.

All The Jewels

One of my favorite ways to add personality into an outfit is through jewelry.  With endless options, you can really have fun adding flair to your outfit through this simple detail.   Not sure where to begin?  I recommend playing around with budget level options first and testing out different styles, metals and pieces.  ASOS, H&M and Baublebar are all great retailers that offer options on the lower end of the spectrum.  Before you opt for only gold and silver, experiment with other gemstones like pearls, tiger’s eye and more.

Don’t Forget Eyewear

More of an eyewear type of guy or gal?  Let your personality shine through in your choice of optical eyeglasses or fun shades.  There are many brands in the market today that offer fashion-forward and quality frames.  If you’re looking to add some extra flare to an outfit, look towards interesting shapes and styles like this Prada pair below.

Play Around With Materials

Finally, one of the most underrated ways to add a touch of interest is by utilizing different, unexpected materials.  Some of the best fashion looks I saw on the street during my trip to London were those that mixed and matched interesting fabrics.  While you may not be feeling risky enough to opt for a fishnet top, this spotted mesh turtleneck will give the same dimension to an outfit.  Other fabrics I would consider?  Lace, sparkle or velvet.

Pearl Choker / Sunglasses / Mesh Top

Fashion in London Tip #3 – Sneakers All Day, Everyday

Adidas, Nike, Veja, and Converse. Look down and you’ll see sneakers as the go-to choice for most. It’s no surprise as the city of London is packed with over 8 million people and commuting is a daily activity for most.  No matter if it was a suit, dress or skirt, sneakers were styled amongst all of the fashionable looks.

White Sneakers

When working with any client, a clean white sneaker is at the top of my capsule wardrobe checklist.  This versatile style looks so fresh with any outfit and modernizes even formal-looking fits. Once you snag a pair like this, you’ll be shocked at how often you will be pulling these out of your closet. I especially love seeing a white sneaker paired with wide leg trousers for women or for men with a nice pair of jeans. From budget friendly to investment, you can’t go wrong adding this item to your wardrobe.

Grey is Here to Stay

Already got your white sneakers covered? Another popular choice amongst the Londoners, and a trend I saw consistently during my fashion trip in London, a grey pair. With the recent popularity of New Balance v990’s, grey toned sneakers have been popping up everywhere.  The muted tone is great for a fall fashion palette and works wonderfully with a neutral capsule wardrobe. I’m taking note and adding this style to my capsule wardrobe checklist as this trend isn’t going anywhere.

New Balance / Common Projects / Converse

Elevate Your Closet With These London Fashion Tips

As you’ve probably gathered, sometimes the smallest parts of your outfit make the biggest impact.  Most times, it is not about having an ever-changing closet, but more so obsessing about the details. Finding ways to style your clothing throughout the year in new and different ways allows you to get the most use out of your pieces.  Sometimes, all you have to do to make something old feel new, is by adding a new detail.  The best part of these takeaways?  They will never go out of style as they are all ways to level up your look, no matter what the trend.

While I can’t be on the road traveling 24/7, I can continue to be inspired by taking these lessons I learned and bringing them into my daily dressing. Of course, I’ll continue to stay inspired from my fashion trip in London through social media and fashion outlets, but nothing ever compares with being immersed in the culture.

If you’re feeling inspired like I am, let’s work together! I’d love to share all of my tips and tricks with you to get you feeling great for the seasons ahead. Schedule your free consultation today to chat with me and learn more about the services that I offer.

I’m Going to London and Have No Idea What to Pack!

Planning a trip to London can be the dream of a lifetime until you realize you need to plan what to wear. Don’t stress! We’ve put together all the best tips from the entire blog so you can easily access everything in one easy location. Follow these tips for stress free packing for your dream trip:

Start by reading this guide on what to pack for London , which is a five part guide offering general packing information for London along with what to wear in spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

If you’re traveling between June-August, you’ll love this post on  what to wear in London in the summer .

What to pack for London has everything to do with the weather.  British fashion is partly defined by the country’s infamous grey skies. It’s unpredictable and changeable, but here’s a rule of thumb: when the weather forecast tells you that it will be sunny all week,  be prepared for rain anyway.

For even more fashion tips, take a look at how to put together the perfect wardrobe for the top things to do in London .

If you’re traveling to other destinations in Europe in addition to London, use the guidelines explained in this  Europe Packing Guide .

You might be surprised to learn that it is possible to travel carryon only even to a place with unpredictable and changeable weather like London. All you need is a strategic capsule wardrobe!

A  capsule wardrobe is an essential concept to understand in order to create a minimal yet highly functional (and fashionable) travel wardrobe. Read this  packing ebook  to help you create the perfect travel wardrobe for your trip.

If you feel extremely overwhelmed at the idea of packing light or have a complicated itinerary, review this  packing course  which shows you specific techniques to plan around limited clothing choices, varying climates, and other unexpected life situations.

Use the  England Packing List  to find clothing ideas to dress appropriately for your trip then use the guidelines from TFG’s  Signature Packing Lists  to help you customize your travel wardrobe.

If you don’t see the information you’re looking for, post a question on  TFG’s Facebook Group .

Check  weather.com’s  extended forecast in advance and 3 days before you leave.  Think about how many days you will be in warm vs cold weather.

If you have a 10 day trip to London and will be spending 7 days in the cold and 3 days in warm weather, plan for 70% of your travel wardrobe to be for the cold and 30% to be for the heat.

If you are only spending a short amount of time in cold weather or if you’re unsure if you will encounter cold weather on your trip, pack only the essentials: two outerwear PLUS two additional items: long sleeve top and leggings.

If your trip shows both cool and warm weather, please read  this packing guide for mixed weather trips .

I’ve created this easy three part guide on  how to pack for cold weather  to help you stay warm while packing light.

Knowing how to pack for cold weather travel can be quite daunting especially if you want to pack light. If you’re traveling in winter, bundle up!

There is one major difference between being at home in the winter and traveling when it’s cold: the amount of time you’ll spend outdoors. When you’re traveling, you’ll likely spend extended periods of time outdoors sightseeing. Don’t be unprepared. Consider layering lightweight clothing such as the ones featured in this  winter packing list  to minimize the need for bulky sweaters and coats.

Avoid bringing a thick heavy coat when possible and opt for a  packable down jacket  instead. Thermals  are also key to keeping you warm without having to pack thick sweaters. Don’t skip these!

You can even wear  leggings or tights under jeans or pants for extra warmth. If you’re not used to the climate, add additional layers until you feel warm. Don’t forget essential winter accessories like a scarf, hat, and gloves!

Picking the best shoes for travel to London will be one of your biggest challenges so start by   reading this 10 step guide to packing the  best travel shoes  for any trip.

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to European cities are the cobblestone streets. While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven. Find out how to choose the best shoes for London  here .

My biggest piece of advice is to choose function over fashion. Really? Yes! The last thing you want is to allow pulsing, injured, or tired feet prevent you from enjoying the trip of a lifetime.

Bring no more than three pairs opting for shoes that match all your clothing. Pack one pair for sightseeing (walking), one pair of any special activities you have planned, and then a third pair to either dress up your outfits or one that’s appropriate for a change in weather.

These are the best  shoes for sightseeing in the cold  and these are the best  shoes for sightseeing in the heat . Black ankle boots like  these  are the most recommended shoes for London when dealing with either cold or mixed weather.

Please read these posts for more Europe travel shoe inspiration:

Please note: ballet flats are a popular travel shoe option when you want a dressier look but they are NOT recommended for long hours on your feet sightseeing.

Choose one of these  cute and comfortable walking shoes  instead – they’re the options most recommended by our readers!

British fashion isn’t quite as chic as the French , and it isn’t always as slouchy as American fashion or as zany as Australian fashion. It can be edgy or  conservative. But one thing’s for sure: just like the rest of Europe, a good fit is key. And when in doubt, choose dressy over casual.

In general, day-to-day European style is more dressy than American style. This DOES NOT mean business clothing. Think dressy top (or the type of top you’d wear to work) plus nice jeans (dark colors are always a good choice).

When it comes to jeans, a slim or  skinny jean style  is preferred to a bootcut. An ankle length pant is the perfect length; no longer, no shorter. If you’re not a pants person, black tights paired with skirts or dresses is perfectly acceptable.

Like anywhere, pack for the environment. Are you spending your time café crawling in the cities or getting lost in the wilderness? As with most destinations, practical sense applies. Leave the beachwear on the beach because it doesn’t translate well to streetwear in the city.

The same goes for gym wear; unless you’re actually headed to the gym, don’t dress in your gym attire.

There are many misconceptions about what should and shouldn’t be worn in Europe. To clarify a couple of the most common myths: you DON’T need to wear slacks or business clothing to sightsee and locals DO wear athletic shoes especially these – they just tend to wear them with a fashionable outfit.

One of the most important aspects about packing efficiently is using  luggage organizers .

The biggest mistake travelers make with toiletries is not considering how much product they actually use. There are five key steps when it comes to downsizing your toiletries properly for a trip:

  • Find combination items . You can find two-in-one shampoos and conditioners, body cleanser that can double as shave gel, a foldable brush with a mirror attached on the handle, and  multi-use makeup products .
  • Purchase empty containers  of various shapes and sizes and DO NOT default to choosing “travel size 100ml or 3oz” options. These are the  best travel containers .
  • Stick to the basics . Simplify your skincare and pampering routine and bring a  capsule makeup collection . It’s only temporary.
  • Replace liquid beauty products with solids.  While  solid toiletries  may not help you downsize they will help you meet the carryon  3-1-1 liquids rule .
  • Choose the right toiletry bag.  These are the  best toiletry bags  and these are the  best  hanging  toiletry bags .

Don’t forget about safety:  Be cautious about where you stash your cash. The safest place for your passport is locked in your accommodation. Carry a photocopy or other ID when you’re sightseeing or are out at night.

Transportation

The Tube is a popular option to visit the site’s in London. Make sure to purchase an Oyster Card for £5 and top up with just the amount you need for the duration of your trip. Your Tube rides will be less expensive and you can return the Oyster Card at the end of your trip to get your £5 reimbursed.

Tip: the city is very walkable! All the major sites are within walking distance so don’t rely on the Tube too much! Take a  free walking tour  when you arrive to London so you can get oriented with the city.

Accommodation

For accommodation, we love  Airbnb  for accommodation in London and other parts of Europe.  Sign up here  for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these  Airbnb tips  for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both  Agoda.com  and  Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For flights, I like booking through  Travelocity  or  Cheapoair  (whichever one’s cheapest). Although I prefer Travelocity because they have a 24 hour money back guarantee.

To maximize your vacation time, fly into the city where you’re starting your trip and out of the city where your trip ends. Many times it’s the same price and saves you from having to spend extra time and money to go back to where you started your trip.

For hostels, we recommend  Hostelworld  and  Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

As a personal tip, if you’re backpacking, instead of booking all your nights in advance, maybe just book one or two so you can first get a feel for the place without overcommitting. Of course, should you be traveling during a special event or holiday, book in advance.

Not sure about staying at a hostel?  Read this.

In the US it’s common to eat everyday meals with a fork. In London, however, it’s generally customary to use a knife and fork even if you’re eating in a casual restaurant. This small tip might help you blend in a little more than your clothing.

Travel Insurance

For travel, I recommend  Travel Guard , which saved me over $800 in hospital bills on my round-the-world trip. As a scuba diver, I also recommend using DAN, which helped me rearrange my flights at no extra cost when I had a dive incident.

London Tours

One of my favorite type of tours to do when I travel are food tours. In London, I received a complimentary tour by  Eating London  and it was awesome.

They also hosted me in Rome where I received a  complimentary Twilight Trastevere Tour and a Cooking Class with Nina. TFG readers and I both loved their tours! Read my reviews  here  and  here .

For more city tours,  New Europe  has excellent tours and the best part? They’re free! All you have to do is tip your guide.

Figuring out what to pack for London can be a REAL struggle.

With such variable weather in the UK, sometimes you’re stuck wondering whether you’re going to need your bikini and board shorts in June or your parka and leggings (this is slightly extreme, but you get the picture).

As someone who has lived in London for the past 9 years, I’m pulling together this London packing list to help you prepare for all eventualities, including what to pack for London in the winter, what to pack for London in the summer, and everything in between.

This packing list for London will be incredibly useful to someone who is

a) a visitor to London for a short period b) a study abroad student in London wondering what to pack for your semester or program abroad c) expats to London who are coming from very different climates and trying to assess which clothes to bring with them (as someone from Florida, I can relate to this!)

London Packing List Essentials

You know the things you pack in your carry-on so you can still have a good trip and not completely fall apart should the airline lose your luggage?

The stuff that is ESSENTIAL and oh-so-important and will make your trip either a success or an awkward story about the time you lost all of your luggage and then cried in London for two weeks?

Yeah, that stuff.

These are the top tier requirements for your London packing list that I want you to drill into your head now so you don’t forget them!

IMPORTANT: are you coming to the UK from abroad?

In case you’re reading this from outside the UK and will be a foreign visitor here, you need to know these 2 things to stay safe and save money.

  • Travel insurance – you need it when going overseas! I use this site to get the best quotes and purchase my packages from. Do not skip this – having medical coverage abroad as well as other coverage in case of missed flights, lost luggage, etc is essential. As I said, I have never gone wrong using this site .
  • International debit cards without fees – do not get stuck paying extortionate foreign fees when using your card abroad (and the UK is almost all card these days). I use the Wise debit and travel card which you can apply and learn more about here .

1. Umbrella or some type of raincoat

I’m not suggesting that it rains in London every day.

In fact, I’m not suggesting that it rains in London as much as you think it might rain in London.

That being said, the weather in London doesn’t always act like it’s predicted to.

And when the rain comes, it might not be a deluge type of thunderstorm rain, but it can be a misty, constant, annoying rain.

Woman with umbrella walking on snow in London in front of red phone booths

This goes for all seasons!

With that in mind, I would suggest that one of the first things you pack for London is either a small umbrella like this one that you can pack up tightly and put in a backpack, or a waterproof coat like this one (it doesn’t have to be a dedicated raincoat).

This ensures that you’re always covered, quite literally, and you don’t have to find yourself sitting in Trafalgar Square trying to eye up where you can run for cover.

After all, the British way is to “keep calm and carry on,” and that includes when it rains.

2. Converters

When bringing electronics such as laptops, phones and cameras over to the UK, it’s important to make sure that your electronics are either capable of handling the voltage of the UK, or that you pack a converter which will convert the UK voltage into the voltage your electronics require.

There are some cases where you just shouldn’t plug an American item into a UK socket (more on that below in the What Not to Pack for London list), but for things like your laptops and camera, just do your research beforehand to figure out whether you do or do not need a converter like this one .

In today’s day and age, converters are mostly a thing of the past as most electronics are built to handle both the UK and other voltages, but like I said, do your own due diligence to double check the labels beforehand.

fashion trip london

3. Adapters

Regardless of the voltage your electronics can take, you’re definitely going to need an adapter for everything you want to plug into a wall in the UK.

This is because UK sockets are shaped differently from sockets around the world and have their own design.

My favorite types of adapters are the ones you can use for lots of countries like this one .

The beauty of having ones like these is that you don’t have to keep buying specific adapters wherever you go.

If you take a day trip to Paris from London, boom – you’ve got the European adapter.

If you happen to buy something in the UK and then want to use it in the US, boom – you’ve got an adapter .

Remember that you’re going to need these for each plug you have to plug in, so don’t just pack 1 for a family of four – bring plenty so no one is stressed over not being able to charge their phone before leaving for the Harry Potter tour.

4. Good Walking Shoes

fashion trip london

While London is not a “walkable” city in the same way that somewhere like Malaga or Bruges or Oxford is a walkable city (meaning you can basically walk everywhere), there is still a LOT of walking to be done in London.

In fact, it’s mostly how we get around – sure, we use public transportation, but once you get off and on at tube stops, work your way to bus stations, etc, you’re still using your feet quite a lot.

And on nice days, walking is one of the best ways to get around central London.

Sure, you might not want to walk from London’s East End to Kensington in the west (it would take hours!), but you can absolutely walk from Hyde Park to the Science Museum or from Churchill War Rooms to Southbank or from Soho to Covent Garden.

What does this mean for your packing list for London?

It means you need some EXCELLENT walking shoes .

They don’t have to be a stereotypical walking shoe, if you don’t want.

You don’t have to rock the Sketchers all the way around town (though more power to you if you do).

You simply need a shoe that feels comfortable on your feet for many miles.

You should have broken them in first before getting to London, and if possible, they should be an all-weather type of shoe like this one .

5. Underwear and socks

Back to the “essentials to put in your carry-on in London list” – um, don’t forget your underwear.

At least a couple of pairs.

What underwear you wear is not my business or problem, and I would highly recommending exploring London with clothes on, so London’s not going to care what you’ve got going on underneath either.

fashion trip london

Just don’t forget to pack it in your carry-on, because I’ve almost done that on a ski trip before and was really contemplating how I was going to find underwear for less than like $100 on top of a mountain and it wasn’t great.

So, yeah – underwear!

What to Pack for London in the Winter

fashion trip london

Winter in London is one of the only times that the weather is pretty much guaranteed – it’s going to be cold.

Not Arctic cold, but cold.

And probably grey.

And probably rainy.

And definitely dark because it gets dark at like 4pm in the winter and you spend your whole day begging the sunshine to come out, but it hates you in December and so just doesn’t.

Or something like that.

Anyway, your London packing list in the winter should include the essentials listed above, as well as…

6. Winter coat

fashion trip london

You need a warm coat to visit London in the winter.

Londoners typically wear dark colors, but I say go for whatever color you prefer because life’s too short to be in all black all the time.

I prefer peacoats like this that are good for going to plays or afternoon tea in London , going to work and just general commuting and living life, but for the really cold days, consider a jacket like this that is windproof, waterproof and super warm so that you don’t feel frozen to your core.

7. Waterproof shoes

fashion trip london

I cannot recommend a good pair of waterproof shoes enough.

Guy has some like these , and I’ve got my eye on some like these , but they seriously are a great idea for the winter when you’re more likely to encounter wet and damp.

The reason these work so well is that you don’t have to wear a separate pair of shoes or boots, like rain boots, in order to deal with the weather.

You can simply incorporate them into your existing outfit and, wallah – dry feet!

fashion trip london

When the weather outside is frightful, the boots on your feet are so…delightful.

Packing a pair of boots for London in the winter is always advisable due to the cold and slush and general dreariness that’s possible.

You don’t need like full on hiking boots, but a pair of fur-lined boots like these are always a great idea, or possibly a fashionable pair of knee high boots for going out at night like these.

Scarves are such a fashion statement AND a practical accessory in London.

Add a loop scarf like this to your London packing list – I use kinds like these and they are super cozy around your neck and really easy to travel with because they serve as good neck pillows on trains and planes and are easy to take off and on with one hand.

If you’re more partial to a more traditional scarf, try a super soft one like this .

fashion trip london

10. Winter Hats

fashion trip london

Especially if you’re walking around all day, having a hat to keep your head warm in London is a real necessity.

You can opt for any style you want, though I do mean something more like a knit hat like this one as opposed to your wildest west cowboy hat.

I like a slouchy one like this , while Guy prefers tighter beanies like this one .

Whatever you choose, make sure it keeps your ears warm as the cold can be really biting, especially if you’re walking along the water.

11. Leggings

fashion trip london

People, leggings are where it’s at.

You can wear them by themselves if you choose dark, thick pairs like these ones or these ones .

Or you can use them as extra insulation under your jeans, which I am ALL ABOUT.

Get a thinner pair like these that will keep your legs warm while also not making you feel like a bloated whale.

12. Comfortable hoodie

fashion trip london

To be honest, while I know London is a fashionable place and most people are going to be walking around with more trendy or fashionable winter wear, there’s something about a slouchy, comfortable hoodie that really comes in handy when you’re just lounging around your accommodation or want to pop out to the store or something similar.

I love these hoodies like these with cool designs and usually get them in a size up so they’re cozy rather than fitted.

13. Vitamin D pills

If you’re coming to London for a long time in the winter, bring some Vitamin D with you!

The sun really doesn’t shine all that much, and when it does it’s not for long.

This can lead to a Vitamin D deficiency, so if you’re here for a couple of weeks or longer and prone to things like Seasonal Affective Disorder, it can’t hurt to have some on hand.

We use this kind from Amazon .

Things to Bring to London in the Spring

fashion trip london

Spring is an interesting time to pack for London because it could snow in April or you could have an amazingly warm day in March – it’s sort of all up to the UK weather gods, and unfortunately I haven’t been able to get in touch with them yet about how to regulate the temperature better.

This means that you should come prepared for a wide variety of weather, which is easily accomplished with layers!

14. Cardigans

fashion trip london

A cardigan is the perfect item on your Spring in London packing list due to the easy ability to put them on and take them off.

You’re not committed to wearing it the whole day if you don’t want, and you can get thin or thicker ones depending on the month in Spring you’re going (erring towards thinner ones in late April/May and thicker ones in late March/April).

I love ones like these that are chunky and cozy for the early Spring ones, and ones like these that are much lighter for the later Spring months.

Also, they can pair with loads of outfits, and they’re versatile in how you wear them so you can create multiple different outfits with the same cardigan.

That is a bonus for packing light!

15. Long sleeve t-shirts

fashion trip london

Spring is still a great time for long sleeve shirts – they are easy to layer with adding a scarf, sweater, or cardigan, or you can just wear it on its own if the weather gets warmer.

Guy prefers more plain long sleeve shirts like this , while I go for something like this to add a bit more color while still being cute.

16. Short sleeve t-shirt

fashion trip london

In Late Spring, short sleeve shirts will allow you to really have the ultimate wardrobe flexibility!

You can layer almost anything on top of it, or strip down to just the shirt and enjoy the sunshine.

Get a pack of moisture wicking shirts like this that will dry quickly if you are traveling for a long time and don’t have time to wash your clothes anywhere except the hotel sink.

17. Capris or Jeans

As for your bottom half, long pants like jeans are still very much worn in London in the Spring.

This isn’t a tropical climate where you’re going to be hit with incredibly warm temperatures every day.

Like I said, it has snowed in April!

If you want to prepare for a warmer spring, bring some capris to give your ankles a bit of room to breathe.

fashion trip london

18. Light Scarf

By the time Spring is in full swing, you can leave the chunky knit scarf at home and instead opt for a light scarf like this one that will add that extra bit of oomph to any outfit.

19. Tights and dresses

You can start breaking out the lighter dresses like these ones to enjoy the spring months in London.

Dresses like these with loads of bold patterns aren’t necessarily the norm, but you can either dare to be different or keep it a bit more floral/plain with dresses like these that will help you blend in with every other Londoner on the streets.

I would recommend wearing tights with dresses all throughout Spring in London, unless you’re in a heatwave.

That being said, Brits tend to dress more formally than Americans so even in a sweltering summer, you’ll still find some people that won’t ditch the tights at all!

20. Comfortable hoodie

I tend to dress more casual, and I find that hoodies are the way to go on colder Spring nights.

Look out for a comfortable hoodie like this one for nights spent chilling on a balcony somewhere, or opt for a more dressed up look like this for a night on the town.

When Spring has sprung in London, a comfortable pair of flats in addition to your walking shoes will be a godsend given the cute dresses and jeans you’re planning on wearing.

The problem with flats, for me, is how they can really tear up your feet if you walk in them all day.

For that reason, I recommend ones like these that put comfort first, and ones like these that roll up easily so you can fit them in your suitcase without taking up all the space.

London Packing List for the Summer

The London Eye from below with a blue sky in the background

Whether you’re visiting London in August , coming to London in September or visiting earlier in the summer, you’re going to be in for a wild ride of London summer weather.

Sometimes, it’s rainy and cold and you need a coat.

Sometimes, it’s so hot and there’s no air conditioning that everyone basically sleeps with their windows open and ice packs in their beds.

So, as you can imagine, putting together a London packing list for the summer can be a real struggle.

I would still recommend layers and keeping your options open, but here are some of the must-haves.

22. Short sleeve shirts

Finally, London in the summer means you can usually wear short sleeve shirts (at least underneath a cardigan or other layer if you need to).

Break out the graphic tees, break out the colorful prints, break out the skin because summer might last only a day so might as well make the most of it!

fashion trip london

Okay, so Londoners don’t really wear shorts.

Even when it’s really hot.

However, that being said, there is also no air conditioning in most of London or England because why would they need air conditioning when the heat doesn’t last for a long time?

Except, as a visitor to London, I feel like you should embrace your favorite shorts if that’s what you want to do to stay cool – I certainly do in the summer and I have a full time job I have to go into and THANK GOD it’s casual enough that I can get away with it, because otherwise all of my skin would melt off on the Central Line.

Keep it a bit more formal with shorts like these, or rock some denim like its 1995 with shorts like these .

fashion trip london

For another way to enjoy London in the summer, add skirts to your London packing list.

They’re great for going out in the evening when you don’t want to wear jeans or long pants, and perfect for enjoying some time in the parks while letting the breeze pass you by.

fashion trip london

25. Dresses

Break out some adorable summer dresses like this one or this one to really embrace summer in London.

Bonus – dresses look great in Instagram shots if you’re hoping to impress all of your family and friends back home, and they give everything room to breathe (and they will also expand to fit the giant portion of fish and chips you just ate).

26. Lightweight tights

As I mentioned, Londoners often prefer to wear tights under dresses even in the summer, so if you want to fit in, get yourself a pair of sheer tights like these ones or lightweight tights like these ones that won’t make your legs sweat but will make sure you don’t have a Marilyn Monroe moment while walking over a storm grate or something.

27. Long pants

Okay, so summer in London isn’t ALL ice cream and sunshine.

There will be some colder days as well, and perhaps some colder days, so wear long pants on the plane or train as your travel clothes and then use them during your trip if you need to.

People recommend all different type of jeans like these and hiking pants like these, but I like just a pair of dark pants like these that go with a lot of outfits and aren’t too hot.

Flats are another essential part of your London summer packing list – choose a bright and colorful pair like thes e to go with your new dress, or opt for a more subtle black or brown look like these ones to pair with a more sophisticated ‘going out’ outfit.

The great thing about flats are that they’re also not bulky, so you can put them in your luggage no problem.

29. Sandals

fashion trip london

Summer in London of 2018 was one of the hottest on record, and basically all of the fashion rules went out the window.

While I wouldn’t typically recommend sandals for walking around London, on the hottest days, you should really invest in some comfortable sandals like these that will let your feet breathe.

Like, no, you shouldn’t be wearing your favorite Mickey Mouse crocs if you want to blend in, but a more subtle sandal might be the difference between losing your mind or not on a really hot London summer’s day when the air is still and the air conditioning is nowhere to be found.

30. Sweaters for night

Again with the layers – pack a few lightweight sweaters like these ones to pair with jeans and flats if you need to in the evening or on colder, rainy, days.

What to Pack for London in the Fall

Want the ultimate London packing list for the autumn ?

Lucky for you, I’ve got a whole post on the topic you can access by just clicking here !

What Else Should You Include on Your London Packing List?

In addition to the clothing items and essential things to bring listed at the beginning of this article, there are some other things that I would make sure to include on your packing list for London to make sure you have a great, comfortable, time.

31. Travel camera

Trust me, I know phone cameras are amazing nowadays.

You can basically create works of art just from an iPhone and I am ALL for that.

That being said, if you are someone who likes to scrapbook your experiences or print pictures from your trip instead of just posting them to Instagram, don’t forget to bring a more professional camera than your phone.

My husband uses this one , and the picture he’s able to take with it with just a few changes in the settings are truly amazing – night skies with stars shining brightly, gorgeous sunset photos, and architecture photography that really captures the essence of what it means to be in London.

This isn’t something for everyone – if you’re happy taking pictures on your phone and sending them to grandma, then that’s absolutely your call – but if you do want to branch out a bit and try to get some even better photos of London, don’t forget to pack the camera!

fashion trip london

32. Travel backpack

I don’t care who you are in London, student, businessman, the Queen – you’re probably carrying around a backpack (okay probably not the Queen but I bet she would if she were allowed).

Backpacks are the easiest way to carry your belongings around if you’re going on more than a couple hour trip.

I carry one into work every day, and take it with me wherever I go, even if I’m going out to dinner or a show or an event afterwards.

When you’re traveling, you want a backpack that you can use both as a carry-on on the plane and as a travel backpack while in London.

Because of that, I want to recommend a couple of different European travel backpacks I know and love that should not only go on your London packing list, but be an integral part of how you actually pack your things!

First up is this one – this is the one I use to take to work every single day.

fashion trip london

I like it because there are a ton of different designs and it’s pretty cute.

It’s also small enough to not feel unwieldly when I carry it around, but large enough that I use it as a “place under the seat in front of you” carry-on just fine.

The one thing it does lack is compartments on the inside – it’s mostly just an empty cavern with a few pockets internally and then the smaller compartment on the outside like on most backpacks.

This works for me, but maybe not for you if you prefer endless pockets and zips in your backpack.

If you do want one that’s a bit more organized inside, check out this one .

fashion trip london

33. Compartment suitcases

Packing is an art form, and packing for London when your hotel room or AirBnb is probably going to be smaller than you’re used to (what can I say, it’s a big city on a small island), you’re going to want to pack as efficiently as possible.

That’s where these compartmentalizing packing cubes come in handy!

Before I started using these, basically everytime I packed it was a real roll of the dice as to whether I’d be able to find my pajamas without throwing every single thing out of the suitcase and onto the floor.

Now, I keep separate compartments for separate types of clothes and items, which makes it way easier for me to find, gives me more space when I get to where I’m staying, and sort of just makes me feel like I have my life together.

34. Portable charger

In addition to your regular chargers and the extra adaptors you need for your phone to be charged in the UK, I would highly recommend carrying around a portable cellphone charger like this one .

Essentially, with all of the use your phone will likely get – from looking up directions to possibly taking photos to WhatsApping your friends back home to show them that you’re in front of Buckingham Palace and HA HA THEY ARE NOT – you’re going to want some extra support in keeping it charged.

These things are lifesavers when you’re running out of battery and still halfway through your day with no chance to go anywhere for a long period of time to charge your phone.

They’re easy to shove in your travel backpack, and ones like these are even small enough to keep in your pocket so you can charge your phone while it’s in your hand!

35. Passport holder and extra copy of passport

Do not forget an extra copy of your passport, in full color, on your packing list for London!

If you find that you lose your passport while here, you’ll be so grateful you have a copy as it will help you get a new one faster.

In addition to that, finding somewhere safe to keep your passport is essential, so I would recommend buying a dedicated passport holder like this one that makes it way easier to get track of and less likely to get shoved to the bottom of a bag somewhere.

There is no fear quite like the fear of losing your passport, so take note!

Four USA passports with boarding passes sticking out the top

It goes without being said that you should include things like your toothbrush and deodorant on your London packing list, but I do want to address toiletries to let you know that you can easily find shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste and other toiletries in London.

Head to somewhere like Tesco or Sainburys and boom – you’ve saved yourself having to pack your toiletries in your luggage and worry about fluid limits.

fashion trip london

What Not to Pack for London

Certain items can and should be left at home when you’re packing for a trip to London.

I mean, basic things like: don’t actually take the kitchen sink and also you won’t really need to take your scuba diving gear with you.

But also things that you might have thought you needed and you don’t, like…

Tank tops or swimsuit

This is a very specific one, but unless you love swimming and are determined to swim while in London, there’s no point in bringing a bathing suit because you’re certainly not going to swim in the Thames – gross!

I would also leave your tank tops at home in the summer unless you use it to layer underneath other clothes.

The weather often isn’t hot enough to wear tank tops or spaghetti straps by themselves, and even when it is, it’s not the most London-suitable clothing items.

I’m not saying you don’t need a hair dryer in London, I’m just saying – DON’T BRING YOURS!

The voltage on an American hair dryer isn’t compatible with the UK voltage and you could start a fire if you plug yours in in the UK.

It’s not worth the potential damage to your life, your accommodation, or your hair dryer.

Instead, buy a cheap one there from somewhere like Boots or ask ahead to see if your accommodation has one there.

Hair straightener or curling iron

Same thing with a hair straightener as above – don’t bring yours because it could start melting after being plugged in in the UK and ain’t nobody got time for that.

Outdoorsy stuff

London is wonderful, but unless you have some day trips planned to other places, you don’t need your hiking boots and survival kit.

It’s a big city, and while the parks are beautiful and spacious, you can appreciate them in your regular clothes – fear not.

Money belts

When I first moved abroad, I was convinced that everyone was out to get me.

And of course I think you should keep your belongings safe in London , but I really wouldn’t bother with a money belt in London.

I am in London every day of the week and have not worn a money belt and have never had anything stolen.

London, like every other big city, has its own issues and of course you always need to keep an eye on your belongings, but leave the money belt at home.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Nice article. I just wanted to point out that dual voltage hair dryers, curling irons, flat irons, etc. are available these days on Amazon. Of course you’ll still need an adaptor for the plug which the hotel will usually provide. You can also order British plugs and hard wire them to your dual voltage appliance (my husband does this for me).

Hi Gail, thanks so much for sharing your experiences!

Packing Guide: What to Wear in London in Spring

The first time I visited London was during the holidays and it was truly a winter wonderland unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Even the decor of NYC doesn’t hold a candle to London during Christmastime! I loved that trip but told myself I wanted to travel to London in spring when the festiveness is gone, the grass is green, and the flowers are blooming.

Spring is the perfect time of year to visit London. The weather is mild, making exploring the city much easier than winter. Plus, the London summer crowds haven’t arrived just yet.

However, despite warmer temperatures, London weather can be quite unpredictable this time of year, and it’s usually not time for sandals. Mornings and evenings can be incredibly chilly, and chances are you may get some brief periods of light rain during your vacation.

If you’re planning a trip to London in spring, here’s my spring packing list featuring essential items to bring in your suitcase.

Trench coat for spring

Your Packing Guide: What to Wear in London in Spring

Whenever I travel, regardless of where I’m going, I try to limit my color palette so I can mix and match my pieces. I stick to mostly neutral colors for my foundation pieces (like jackets, jeans, or shoes), then work in some pops of color via tops and dresses.

Packing like this helps keep options open since plans and weather can change. This also allows me to re-wear certain items with new pieces I may buy during my trip.

Read on for my London packing list for spring but be sure to also check the weather since it can be a bit erratic.

1. Trench Coat

If there’s one clothing item that’s synonymous with London fashion, it’s a trench coat . This is a must-have to pack for your spring trip to London. A trench coat is highly versatile, and it really is the perfect outer piece for spring weather. It’s warm enough for cooler days, but also breathable during moments of sunshine. I prefer a camel color since the shade works with pretty much everything. You can style a trench coat over jeans and sneakers as easily as you can with a dress and heels.

This post on how to wear a trench coat will provide you with a handful of outfit ideas for your London spring trip.

2. White Sneakers

When it comes to footwear, people dress in London similarly to how they do in any major US walking city : sensibly and for comfort. Therefore, a pair of sneakers – or as they call them, trainers – is a must.

I’m partial to classic white sneakers like these or these because you can wear them with everything from jeans and skirts to casual dresses and wide leg trousers. These Adidas sneakers also provide a cool it-girl aesthetic.

3. Black Leather Ankle Boo ts

Black leather ankle boots are a footwear staple in London. Which should be no surprise since both Chelsea boots and Dr. Marten’s started there.

Londoners wear these water resistant boots with  everything . They’re a great option for trekking through damp streets or when a rainy forecast is on the horizon.

These Sam Edelman boo ts have been a closet favorite of mine for a few years now. And I have them in two colors.

4. Lightweight Sweater

Due to the ups and downs of weather, layering is key in London in spring. Make sure to pack a few thin layers such as a lightweight sweater or cardigan that you can wear on its own or easily layer if needed.

My go-to layers for my latest trip included this neutral everyday sweater from Jenni Kayne , and this striped sweater from Sezane .  Everlane also makes great sweaters.

I recommend packing at least two pairs of jeans for your spring trip to London. If you’re packing knee-high or tall boots, pack a pair of skinny jeans so that you can keep your legs warm by tucking the legs into the boots.

I also usually pack a pair of straight leg jeans that hit at my ankle. Not only does this length and silhouette work for a variety of footwear options, if it rains your pant bottoms won’t get soaked.

6. Midi Dress

If you’re traveling to London in late spring or happen to luck out with warm weather, be sure to pack a few midi dresses.

Pairing a midi dress with some with sneakers is quintessentially British. Find a great selection of solid and printed dresses from English brand Boden here .

7. Elevated Tee

I’m a big fan of these t-shirts from M.M. LaFleur . Pima cotton is a higher quality cotton. So these short sleeved shirts are thicker and a bit more elevated than your average basic tees. (If you need an easy dinner outfit after a long day of sightseeing, throw one on with some jeans and heels for a simple but comfortable look.)

Read my M.M.LaFleur size guide here.

Mornings and nights in London can still be quite chilly in the spring, so consider packing a lightweight scarf or cashmere travel wrap to keep your neck and chest warm.

You can’t go wrong with an iconic Burberry scar f .

9. Travel Umbrella

It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to rain, especially in London. The city is notorious for rainy weather. So be sure to pack a space-saving umbrella that you can fit in your suitcase or purse.

10. Crossbody Bag

I always like to be hands-free when I travel. Because I don’t like holding a bag all day while sightseeing or shopping. Although London is generally safe, the city isn’t immune to pickpockets. And a zip-top crossbody bag ensures my wallet, phone, and other essentials are on my physical body that I can hold close in large crowds.

This zipper crossbody bag is my bag of choice for international travel, and it’s a great medium size that fits a camera or small souvenirs.

If you’re looking for something smaller, I love this bag from Sezane and it’s available in multiple colors.

The key to packing for London in spring is bringing light layers, pieces you can mix and match, and comfortable shoes like sneakers or boots for your sightseeing days.

If you have some extra time during your trip to London, you can also book a quick getaway to the Cotswolds .

Jill Zarin blames ‘Below Deck’ star Fraser Olender for ‘disaster’ yacht trip

Jill Zarin blamed “Below Deck” head steward Fraser Olender for her “disaster” megayacht outing, which was documented on an episode of the Bravo series last week.

The “Real Housewives of New York City” alum said she didn’t have any regrets about her behavior, which included taking issue with the food service, requesting a specific type of ice and even suggesting guests be given a bell to summon crew members.

“I went into it with the attitude that I want to make a good show. I was me, I literally was me. I was me the way I am in my real life,” Zarin, 60, told Heather McDonald on Tuesday’s episode of her  “Juicy Scoop” podcast .

Jill Zarin

“If I like my Diet Coke then I want another. If I don’t like it then I will send it back. If I don’t like my food then I send it back. Most people do,” she continued.

“I think if the crew had a different attitude toward me and said ‘Jill, she’s a little pushy, she’s a Jewish mother, she’s a little bit of a know it all’ I think everybody would have leaned into it.”

The reality TV star went on to detail the two-day stay, which cost her pal an eye-watering $45,000 for “five meals” along with lodging.

“You get on the boat at 12 and right away you get lunch,” she said. “You get an explanation — which I actually taped on my phone that I am going to post — of Fraser [Olender] explaining the layout of the next two days.”

Zarin continued, “In fact, one of the things he emphasized which is ironic is that there would be snacks and food all the time everywhere. He actually emphasized and completely didn’t deliver. When I think about the trip, it was the head stew’s job to make sure things went seamlessly, and I kind of blame him for the trip being a total disaster.”

The Bravolebrity noted that she “felt terrible” for her friends who paid for the trip.

Fraser Olender

You (and a guest!) could win a VIP experience in NYC for Virtual Reali-Tea Live!

“They spent an enormous amount of money [and] I wanted them to have an amazing experience,” she said.

“I did this show because my friends wanted to go on TV. I don’t blame them, a lot of people do. [But] I didn’t mind doing it with them because as long as I am me, I am good.”

“Below Deck” cast member and stewardess, Barbara “Barbie” Pascual, later admitted Zarin “was right” about some of her seemingly outlandish requests on the show.

Jill Zarin

“You guys, I watched the show back, and I don’t think that Jill was as bad as it looked, and I just wanna also say that there were so many other moments where she was super fun and sweet and nice,” Pascual said on her Instagram Story last week.

She acknowledged that the former “Housewife” was “demanding,” but she was “not rude” and was making requests that were “actually normal yacht requirements” and “pretty logical.”

“She was right. She just wanted nugget ice in her Diet Coke, that’s not a big deal,” the stewardess added.

However, during the episode, Pascual said Zarin was “too much” to handle.

“I think she’s annoying. You’re a freeloading guest who’s extremely demanding. This is too much for me. I need another stew just for Jill,” she said in a confessional.

Meanwhile, Olender quipped, “Jill is crawling into my brain and eating away at my soul.”

Jill Zarin

Chef Anthony Iracane also took a swipe at the Jill & Ally founder in his confessional.

“I think the primary, she’s OK, but her friend taking over the boat, it’s like she’s a f–king captain. Like taking over the ship,” he said.

“Below Deck” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo
