Great tour with Ryan! Kept it lively and informative. Very cool to hear the inside scoop from college students about what it's like to be on campus at such a historic site. Beautiful building - they don't make them like this anymore. Would have been cool to see a guest room and/or an additional guest facility.

You gotta hand it to Henry Flagler. One of the businessmen considered by history as "Robber Barons", he spent an entire lifetime removing as much money as possible from the pockets of of ordinary people in order to establish himself as the second richest man in the world. And even after being dead since 1913 he's still doing it. What a guy. This tour is going to go down in history as one of the most worthless hours a person could possibly spend, and adding insult to injury you have to pay for it. The tour consisted of having a little college girl stand in the publicly open rotunda and point at the ceiling, standing in the public courtyard and pointing at the buildings, walk us through a room used apparently for nothing else but displaying artifacts celebrating the greater glory of Henry Flagler, and showing us the college dining room. Based on the number of other chumps along with us on this tour, Old Henry cleared somewhere around $500 pure profit after paying some poor college girl $15 to walk around with us for an hour. And the restrooms were dirty.

Glad we signed up for this tour a couple days in advance because it is quite popular. The 50 minute tour is led by a current student, in our case Ally. She did a nice job and had a good booming voice for the tour. She had a good sense of humor. Don't expect super in-depth knowledge of the building and history but enough to make this an enjoyable tour. The tour involved three indoor spaces the amazing lobby, the ladies lounge and the stunning dining room. Also they cover the outside courtyard. It is hard to believe this place has survived all of these years and has been a college for over 50 years. You have to see it to believe it!

Great tour through this amazing building! Our guide (Kate) was great. The tour group was small enough that we could all ask as many questions as we wanted. She explained in detail the history of the building, architectural features, and the current use (freshman dorms!) It's def a must see if you're in Saint Augustine!

I can't remember our tour guide name, maybe Cheyenne? The tour was very informative, I loved the history. The building is absolutely beautiful, and our tour guide was fantastic!

The architecture in the small town is simply amazing. As we progress in society, we as a culture lost some of this old-time detail. Walking into some parts of this community was a throwback in time. I'm glad I'll be spending some time here over the next six months. I did not do the tour, and this was mostly a drive-through visit with minimal walking. I miss having my walking partner around as I know she would love this as much, if not more than I did. I can't wait to come back to this area and actually do the tour the way it's meant to be

The tour is really worth your time if you are in to history and architecture. The grounds and the building are so beautiful and it has a rich history. Incredible original pieces in there from Tiffany and Edison. The tour was only 45 minutes in length, so it will not eat up your day and you will leave there happy that you visited.

Travel Guides

Touring flagler’s legacy in st. augustine.

You don’t have to be an aspiring college student to tour what The Princeton Review calls “one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States.”

Daily public tours of Flagler College in St. Augustine highlight the architectural heritage of the erstwhile Hotel Ponce de Leon, a former luxury tourist attraction now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and part of the school’s campus.

Built by millionaire developer Henry Flagler in 1888, the luxury hotel is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and houses the largest collection of in-use Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows.

Guests begin their tour by exploring the courtyard while learning of the hotel's Spanish Renaissance architecture and of the techniques and innovations used to construct Henry Flagler's vision.

Next is the grand lobby where you can stare up into an 80-foot domed ceiling supported by eight ornate oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, each slightly different from the next.

The tour continues into the dining room where 79 Louis Comfort Tiffany Stained Glass windows stream light onto hand-painted murals on the walls and ceiling.

Visitors also spend time in the Flagler Room, formally the Women's Grand Parlor, decorated with hand-crafted Austrian crystal chandeliers, a Thomas Edison clock containing the largest piece of intact white onyx in the western hemisphere, original hotel furniture and art, as well as personal photos and mementos from Henry Flagler and his family.

Located at 74 King St., tours depart from the Rotunda at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They cost $10 for adults; $8 for seniors ages 60 and up and active military personnel; $1 for children ages 4-12, and free for children under 4 years.

Historic Flagler College Announces Virtual Tour

St. Augustine, Fla. –  From the safety and comfort of your own home, you can now explore the former Hotel Ponce de Leon virtually. The current home of Flagler College, the former luxury hotel famed for its Tiffany Windows, ornate murals and Spanish-Renaissance architecture, is closed to visitors in an abundance of caution during the pandemic.

In order to serve the curious public and the many school groups who normally visit, college officials at Flagler’s Legacy Historic Tours have created a solution to share the history of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon through a virtual tour option. Flagler’s Legacy partnered with a local St. Augustine company, Listing Solutions, to capture the immersive 3D images of the interior of the former famed hotel. Areas included are the courtyard, the Flagler Room, the Dining Hall, Rotunda and the Solarium.

Each area has its own 3D model with unique interactive touch points including historic photos, fun facts, and views of rooms not usually accessible. Additionally, the virtual option has more information than can fit into the one-hour, inperson tour.

“The new tour was created more as an added bonus to our Flagler’s Legacy Tours, rather than a replacement,” said Flagler’s Legacy Assistant Director Nikki Liberatore. “It is a great option for anyone who has never visited us, can’t make it to us, or for those who have visited us many times before.”

Flagler’s Legacy Historic Tours is currently operating from its flagship store on St. George Street while the campus location remains closed. All merchandise is available at the main location, as well as online   here .

Virtual tours are accessible through mobile devices or on desktop and are free to view  here . For more information or questions, please contact Flagler’s Legacy at (904) 823-3378.

Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as an offsite campus in Tallahassee, Fla. U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review regularly feature Flagler as a college that offers quality education at a relatively low cost. A Flagler education is less than half the cost of similar private colleges, and competitive with many state universities. A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for its historic beauty. The centerpiece of the campus is the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a National Historic Landmark opened in 1888 by railroad pioneer and Standard Oil co-founder Henry M. Flagler. Flagler College, housed in what once was one of Henry Flagler's most opulent Gilded-Age hotels in St. Augustine, is a private four-year college. The college opened in 1968 and now offers 37 majors, two pre-professional programs, and two master's programs. With an enrollment of 2,600 students, the college draws students from all over the world to study liberal and fine arts in the setting of the nation's oldest city.

The Ponce de Leon hotel was built in 1887 and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Flagler's Legacy Tours offers guided tours of this architectural masterpiece throughout the year. Visit the website for more details on the tours.

Presidents, dignitaries, royalty, and celebrities of the time walked the halls of this hotel during its heyday. Designed for entertainment, relaxation, and grandeur, Flagler's hotel incorporated all of the modern conveniences of the time, including electricity, running water, and a Thomas Edison clock, one of the first ever to be used in a public space. The Ponce de Leon is also home to the largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows, with more than 79 windows decorating the dining hall.

Tallahassee campus of Flagler College to shut down in May

Flagler College-Tallahassee is set to close in May after over 20 years of serving the community.

While the college’s Tallahassee campus will close in May, a "teach-out" — in which current students are allowed to complete their program of study during their school's closure — began in fall 2023 and will conclude in December when the final cohort of five students in its education program will graduate.

“It's a bittersweet moment, but I'm also really proud of what our alumni are doing and the legacy that they have,” Tallahassee campus Dean Wayne Riggs told the Tallahassee Democrat. Riggs also serves as Flagler’s Dean of Graduate and Education programs on the college’s main campus in St. Augustine.

The teach-out has also meant layoffs for the Tallahassee campus’s faculty and staff members, where some served in full-time faculty positions and others were adjunct professors.

But regardless of the announced closure, a Flagler spokesperson says the college “remains in strong financial standing.”

“Despite the success of our academic programs, the landscape of higher education has changed dramatically since Flagler offered its first class in Tallahassee two decades ago,” Flagler College said in a statement. “Like other institutions, Flagler College is adapting to meet the challenges of enrollment and the needs of students.”

Flagler College is an accredited, private liberal arts college established in 1968. Its Tallahassee campus was founded in 2000 following the Florida Legislature's move to expand opportunities for 4-year degree seeking students.

The college’s Tallahassee branch shares a private-public partnership with Tallahassee Community College and gave students the opportunity to continue at the local Flagler campus — located on TCC's campus — after earning an associate’s degree from TCC. The local campus has had about 3,200 alumni since its establishment, according to Riggs.

Preventing a ‘gap in talent’ during teacher shortage

Flagler College-Tallahassee has offered teaching pathways with its education program — which graduated more than 900 alumni and 60 teachers of the year — through majors in elementary education and exceptional student education. The campus also had other degree offerings such as business and psychology.

Tuition on the local campus has been $320 per semester credit hour, and the typical program lengths have been four to five semesters.

In 2020, TCC President Jim Murdaugh and former Flagler College President Joseph Joyner formalized a “ 2+2 Elementary Education Articulation Agreement, ” which was designed to address the ongoing teacher shortage locally and statewide as the only public-private partnership in Florida providing a path for a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

The Tallahassee campus’s intern coordinator, Staci Duggar, worries that the campus closure will affect the local community’s ongoing teacher shortage the most. She says most of the college’s students are graduates from local K-12 schools, and the majority of them become teachers in the community — mostly in the Leon County School District.

“Flagler College is very treasured in Tallahassee, and they do an excellent job of putting teachers into our local schools,” Duggar said.

She is also one of the remaining adjunct professors at the college’s Tallahassee campus and is a grants officer at the Florida State University Office of Research. “It's sad that Tallahassee is losing that resource,” Duggar said.

But with the stability of the Tallahassee campus’s education program being one of Flagler and TCC’s top priorities, the Flagler Board of Trustees made the decision to move the program to the sole oversight of TCC during a February 2023 meeting ahead of the teach-out, according to a Flagler spokesperson.

The transition has been reflected in TCC’s moves in fall 2023 of adding three new bachelor’s degrees to its academic offerings, with two of them mirroring the Flagler Tallahassee campus’s teaching majors.

“We know that the teaching field has one of the most critical shortages of any sector right now,” Murdaugh said. “So when we learned of Flagler’s plans to begin teaching out the programs they offer on our campus, we immediately started the process to seek approval to offer bachelor’s degrees in elementary education, exceptional student education as well as business.”

“There are tremendous needs in these fields, and we didn’t want there to be a gap in talent,” he added.

Related news: TCC adds 3 new bachelor's degrees, putting the college in 'new territory'

Besides the Flagler College branch, TCC has had similar partnerships in the past with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2001, Barry University in 2003, Saint Leo University in 2006 and Thomas University in 2010 — all of which no longer exist.

Flagler’s Tallahassee campus has seen a decrease in enrollment since 2016, according to Riggs, which is one of the reasons behind the college’s strategic response to close the local branch as students’ educational preferences are changing.

“We're being sensitive to that change, and the college is also being proactive by acknowledging that what started in 2000 was good in 2000 but might not be as effective in the 2020s,” Riggs said.

Faculty, former students upset about upcoming closure

The Flagler College-Tallahassee closure in May comes after it has had a three-year graduation rate of 75% to 80%, a maximum student enrollment in the mid-400s and a maximum of 12 full-time professors throughout its history, according to Riggs.

“Everybody’s pretty sad about it,” Duggar said, referring to the upcoming closure. “The college is very beloved in the community. The graduates are happy, principals are happy and our local students come in and go out as teachers ready to teach the next generation.”

The Tallahassee campus’s Education Coordinator Andrea Carlile is one of two full-time faculty currently remaining on the campus. She says the education program had about 15 adjunct professors before the teach-out began.

“It's very disappointing, and we're all very sad to lose our campus and our programs,” Carlile said. “You can walk into almost any school in Leon County and you'll find Flagler Tallahassee graduates because a lot of them remain local.”

Wakulla County native Amanda La Tour — who earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Flagler’s local campus — reflected on the significant role that the professors, small classroom sizes and accomodating schedule played in her life as a mother who decided to go back to school.

“I feel very grateful to have been one of the last classes that Flagler had before closing their doors,” said 32-year-old La Tour, who currently teaches at Riversprings Middle School in Crawfordville. “I hope that future education majors can find a home like we did at Flagler Tallahassee.”

What's next?

Flagler College-Tallahassee’s spring graduation is will take place Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. with 13 students graduating. Bob Boyd, president and CEO of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, will be the ceremony's commencement speaker.

Before the ceremony, the college will be holding an event for faculty and staff at a private venue on Friday, May 3 to celebrate the Tallahassee campus’s accomplishments and impact over the last two decades.

Lawmakers vote to reauthorize US spying law that critics say expands government surveillance

Lawmakers passed legislation early Saturday reauthorizing and expanding a controversial U.S. surveillance law shortly after the powers expired at midnight, rejecting opposition by privacy advocates and lawmakers. The bill, which passed on a 60-34 vote, reauthorizes powers known as Section 702 under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which allows the government to collect the communications of foreign individuals by accessing records from tech and phone providers. Critics, including lawmakers who voted against the reauthorization, say FISA also sweeps up the communications of Americans while spying on its foreign targets.

India's election overshadowed by the rise of online misinformation

As India kicks off the world's biggest election, which starts on April 19 and runs through June 1, the electoral landscape is overshadowed by misinformation. The country -- which has more than 830 million internet users and is home to the largest user base for social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram -- is already at the highest risk of misinformation and disinformation, according to the World Economic Forum. Misinformation is not just a problem for election fairness -- it can have deadly effects, including violence on the ground and increase hatred for minorities.

Flagler Forward: Flagler College Receives $30,000 Grant from Siemens to Fund Science Department Research

Siemens Grant Check Presentation in Ponce Courtyard

The grant includes $25,000 for Flagler College Professor Matt Brown’s San Sebastian River Water Quality Research Project. Additionally, $5,000 has been allocated as the lead/title sponsor of Science Week , underscoring Siemens' commitment to fostering scientific education and innovation.

Brown’s research uses fecal bacteria such as Enterococcus as indicators of untreated waste, with the goal of tracing sources of fecal input to local waterways. He also aims to study the response of Enterococcus bacteria to saltwater exposure and its connections to the broader microbial community respiration. The results will help the City of St. Augustine target their funding for sewer conversion to the areas that need it the most.

Siemens Grant - Science Faculty and Student in Ponce Courtyard

“The Empower+ grant will provide our students with the tools to explore topics such as biofuel optimization and partitioning of contaminant compounds. Allowing students to see the applications of their new skills right from the start is a powerful motivator for learning,” said Brown.

Specifically, the funds will allow the College to purchase critical laboratory equipment, provide research stipends for undergraduate student researchers, and cover travel and research dissemination expenses.

Steve Hoiberg, Director of Siemens Empower+ Programs, emphasized the importance of such transformative research endeavors. "Transformative research such as the study of the San Sebastian River and related environmental issues is not only an important part of the College’s core mission, but it’s critical to the State of Florida’s sustainable future," said Hoiberg. "This is the innovative, forward-thinking work that Siemens’ Empower+ program is passionate about supporting."

Empower+ from Siemens expands partnerships and supports customized programming in various areas, including sustainability, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), student success, workforce development, energy efficiency, and community engagement. Through initiatives like Empower+, Siemens aims to collaborate with communities, schools, colleges, and universities to inspire the next generation of leaders.

Siemens, a global technology company focusing on industry, infrastructure, transport, and healthcare, believes that technology with purpose has the potential to address the greatest challenges of our time.

The partnership between Siemens and Flagler College has been ongoing since 2022, primarily focused on the renovation of Ponce Hall . Working together to enhance campus efficiency, Siemens and Flagler embarked on a project to construct a central chiller plant serving cooling needs across several campus buildings, including Ponce Hall, Kenan Hall, Molly Wiley Art Building, Ringhaver Student Center, and Proctor Library. This project, scheduled for completion in 2025, will generate energy efficiency and cost savings for the College.

Marc Craddock , a Flagler Alum, plays a pivotal role within the Siemens team as the higher education team lead for Siemens in Florida.

Flagler College is grateful to Siemens for its continued partnership and generous support, which enables the institution to pursue innovative research and educational opportunities for its students and the wider community.

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.
