Wondering why YouTube is not switching to full screen in Safari on your Mac?

Not being able to watch your favorite YouTube creators in full screen can be frustrating.

If you are reading this, we can assume that YouTube is not switching to full screen in Safari on your Mac .

Now, there are several reasons why you may encounter this problem.

Faulty versions of Safari are the most common culprit for this issue. However, it can also be due to corrupted browsing data or incompatible extensions.

Today, we will show you what to do if YouTube is not switching to full screen in Safari on your Mac.

Let’s begin!

1. Restart Safari.

If something isn’t working on your browser, the first thing you should do is restart it. An error may have occurred on Safari, preventing YouTube from entering full screen.

Here’s how you can properly close Safari:

  • Make sure that Safari is in front of your screen.
  • Now, click on Safari in the upper left corner of your display.
  • Choose Force Quit Safari to stop the app from running.

Once done, relaunch Safari and see if you can now watch YouTube videos in full screen.

2. Restart Your Mac.

Like restarting Safari, restarting your Mac should resolve temporary bugs and errors.

Follow the steps below to restart your Mac:

  • Access the Apple Menu by clicking the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen.
  • Choose the Restart option from the drop-down menu.
  • Click on Restart in the dialog box that appeared to confirm your action.

Restart Mac

Wait for your Mac to restart. Go back to Safari to check if the problem is solved.

3. Use Private Browsing

If restarting your Mac did not work, try accessing YouTube in Private Mode on Safari.

When using a Private Window, your previous history and data are not used, which could be corrupted.

Here’s how you can open a private window:

  • Press the Command + Shift + N keys on your keyboard.
  • In the upper left corner of your screen, click on File > New Private Window .

Try watching a YouTube video in full screen to check if the problem is solved.

If you can watch videos in full screen on a private window, there might be an issue with your browsing data.

Head to method 5 to clear Safari’s data.

4. Disable Extensions.

Safari extensions are helpful tools that provide additional features to your browser. However, not all browser extensions are properly optimized. This could cause issues for some websites.

Check your extensions if you encounter problems playing videos in full screen.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Launch Safari on your Mac.
  • In the upper left corner, click on Safari > Preferences (or Settings).
  • Now, go to the Extensions tab.
  • Uncheck the checkbox beside the extension to disable it.

Disable Safari Extensions

Try playing another YouTube video to check if the problem is solved.

If you are able to enter full screen, it means one of your extensions is the culprit. Enable your extensions one by one until YouTube stops entering full screen again.

The last extension you’ve enabled is the one causing problems. Uninstall the extension or look for an alternative.

5. Clear Browsing Data.

Corrupted browsing data could also cause YouTube videos not to enter full screen. Clear your browsing data to rule out possible issues.

  • Now, open the Safari tab in the upper left corner.
  • Choose Clear History in the drop-down menu.
  • On the pop-up window, change the target time range to All History .
  • Click on Clear History to start the process.

Once done, log in to your YouTube account and see if you can play videos in full screen.

6. Update Your System.

There might be a bug or glitch within Safari that prevents videos from playing on full screen.

To rule this out, update your Mac’s software to get the latest version of Safari. Software updates should also patch bugs and errors within your system.

Follow the guide below to update your Mac:

  • Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen.
  • Now, choose System Settings or System Preferences .
  • If you choose System Settings , click on General on the left side window. Then click on Software Update on the right.
  • If you choose  System Preferences , click on Software Update .
  • Wait for your Mac to check for updates.
  • If there’s an available update, click on Update Now or Upgrade Now .

  • If you are using a MacBook, make sure that your battery is at least 50% charged. You can just leave it plugged into the wall outlet during the update.
  • Your Mac can restart several times while installing the update.
  • The update progress bar might also appear to be stuck. When this happens, don’t do anything. Software updates can take several minutes to complete.

If your Mac won’t boot after the update , you can check our in-depth guide on how to resolve this issue.

7. Contact Apple.

At this point, we suggest that you leave the matter to the professionals.

Head to Apple’s support page and look for the issue you’re experiencing. If there’s an available solution, it should appear in the results tab. You’ll also see related articles about the problem.

I don't see any of that. I'm on 10.13.5 with a late 2013 15" rMBP and a 2010 Mac Pro 5,1. Always watch full screen on Safari with no problems.

I have retina 13' MacBook Pro early 2015. I have same problem as you guys have for number 2 but the problem issued in iTunes, not safari... but I found workaround which I adjust display from default to scaled and press any button except default for scaled.

Oh yeah I already report this problem four times so we are stuck with this workaround or downgrade to Sierra which it still works perfectly with recent iTunes... so does it work or not for safari issue number 2? Also I'm sorry I can't help you with issue number 1...

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that workaround solution are not working for you... so did you update to 13.6? All I advised that you guys might need to feedback to apple inc about this safari situation. I'm on Sierra on my original partition and download Mojave public beta on second partition: they finally fixed that iTunes video situation... but you can wait for Mojave public release until then, either you can downgrade to Sierra (for that you need to backup from that Time Machine) but I doubt that you like it or you stuck with High Sierra and you could wait for Mojave public release... I heard that there is 13.6 is last version for High Sierra... also you could check Apple community for solution as well... I'm curious which video are you checking on safari issues; I could check it on Mojave beta for you (if I did check and didn't work; I will report it as beta issue)... but sadly I heard that beta 4 just came out for developers so...

thanos.nik said: Hello everyone. I have noticed various bugs since I upgraded to High Sierra almost one year ago (this has been the release with the most bugs for me) and some of them have remained consistent throughout the various updates that 10.13 has received. I am currently running 10.13.5. There are two glitches I've noticed on Safari while playing back video in full-screen. They seem to happen randomly so I have no idea what causes them or how to fix them. Both of them happen after the player controls have disappeared. (See images attached for both) No.1: Stuttering Video View attachment 767200 No.2: Diagonal Stretch on Video View attachment 767203 View attachment 767204 As you can see on the second one the image stretches and wraps around the screen. After moving the cursor on both occasions the glitch goes away and comes back after the cursor disappears again. Has anyone else seen this or found a fix? It's really annoying having to watch videos in windowed mode. PS: I had to use my phone to capture the bugs, because during screen capture they would go away. Click to expand...

thanos.nik said: Sadly, we haven't found anything still. Some people say this gets fixed on macOS Mojave 10.14.1, but not everyone has a compatible machine, of course. Also, I discovered a new way to cause this glitch, by scaling a full screen video using the touchpad and stopping mid-scale. [doublepost=1539076595][/doublepost] It seems like Apple won't be issuing another update to High Sierra, and will be fixing this during the Mojave cycle... How to Fix YouTube Fullscreen Not Working on Firefox, Chrome and Safari

Similar to YouTube black screen issue, choppy YouTube video problem, another annoying trouble often reported by YouTube users is the "YouTube Fullscreen Mode Not working" . Users don't face any problem while watching YouTube videos until they enable the full-screen mode. However, YouTube full screen still shows taskbar. So, you may be unable to enjoy YouTube movies in full screen.

YouTube Won't Work Full Screen

This is a common problem that can happen in various browsers especially Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. For instance, taskbar not hiding when fullscreen is enabled on chrome. And there are many guides online to help you figure it out, but none is in that much details. In this post, we are going to share with you detail guide on how to fix YouTube fullscreen problem on Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

Part 1: Fix YouTube Fullscreen not Working on Chrome

Part 2: fix youtube fullscreen not working on firefox, part 3: fix youtube fullscreen not working on safari, part 4: download youtube videos to computer and watch without fullscreen problem.

Google Chrome is one of the most popular web browsers, so let's begin with fixing the YouTube full-screen problem on chrome. If YouTube is not loading or opening in Chrome when you go full-screen, these fixes could be surprisingly easy to solve the trouble.

STEP 1. Just go to your Chrome address bar, type " chrome://plugins " and hit "Enter", you'll see a list of all installed plugins.

STEP 2. Then, click the " Details " button.

STEP 3. Scroll down and find " Adobe Flash Player ". If you see 2 Adobe Flash Players, jump to next step. If there is only one, you need to download a new Adobe Flash Player. Open a different browser, like IE or Firefox and go to adobe.com and follow the instruction to download and install flash player.

STEP 4. Go back to the Chrome plugin page and find the Flash plugin with the line and click "Disable". Disabling this flash player allows the browser to use the latest flash version that you have installed on your computer.

Disable Flash Player

STEP 5. Restart Chrome to see if everything is fine.

Another Solution: Update your browser to use the HTML5 YouTube player

If Flash Player just won't work properly on your computer, you can try watching YouTube in HTML5 instead of Flash. Just head over to  YouTube's HTML5 Video Player  page and click the  Join the HTML5 Trial  link.

Join YouTube HTML 5 Player

If YouTube videos won't go full screen on Firefox, then it may have a problem with the Flash Player or your video drivers. Here's how to fix YouTube Not Going Fullscreen Mode issue.

STEP 1. First of all, please update Firefox to the latest version .

STEP 2. Visit  Adobe's test page  to see if the Flash plugin is installed and working properly. If not, install or update Flash .

Install Flash Player on Firefox

Some Mac users have reported that they came across the same issue when trying to enjoy videos in full screen on Safari. If so, there is simple troubleshooting for you to take into consideration.

STEP 1. Go to Finder > " Applications ". Scroll down your applications list until you find the Safari.  Right-click the Safari icon and choose to " Get Info "   from the context menu.

STEP 2. Click the checkbox next to "Open in 32-bit mode". Then, close and exit out of Safari Info window.

Open 32-bit Mode

STEP 3. Launch Safari and navigate Safari > Reset Safari > " Reset " to reset Safari.

If the above solutions did not fix the YouTube problems, you should next try uninstalling and reinstalling Flash player.

Actually, the most simple way to fix the problem of YouTube taskbar not hiding when going fullscreen would directly download the videos you want on your computer. In this way, I am sure you will enjoy the full-screen watching with the video player on your Windows/Mac. But how? Maybe you can go to this page: How to Download YouTube Videos for more details.

Download YouTube Videos

I hope these 4 fixes for "YouTube fullscreen not working" problem worked for you and you can successfully get rid of the taskbar in fullscreen on YouTube. In case you still have the problem while watching YouTube in full screen, you can leave comments below.

chrome://plugins isn't available anymore. You have to go to chrome://settings/content to change flash and other plugins.

I'm using Safari/Mac Version 11.0.3 and this version does not feature a 32-bit option. What are the options now? This full-screen issue only started recently and the only thing that happened that I can think of is that QuickTime was recently installed. Thanks!

Hi. It seems that since macOS High Sierra 10.13.4, Apple discontinue the support of 32-bit apps. That's probably why the open in 32 bit mode is not available on your Safari. Other things you can try to get the full-screen issue fixed include:

1) Enable the flash plugin on Safari; 2) Disable HTML5; 3) Clear Safari caches and data.

Stephanie Kay Shockley

That's not my issue. Mine is I click on the full screen button and it acts like I didn't click it.

Bruce Part

Ditto, but changed user from my friend's log on and no problem. Doesn't present any problems there. Maybe the dreaded 'Windows Updates' overnight has changed something. Greetings from Sydney AUS

Screen Rant

Make mac safari go full screen & more ways to expand your viewport.

Apple Mac users can customize Safari to see more content from a website and less browser chrome by using full screen, zooming, and hiding controls.

Apple 's Safari browser for the Mac is more customizable than ever and there are several ways to expand the viewport to show more of a website at once, including full screen mode. When looking at a photo or a video, more is usually better and the same is true of data-heavy websites that may have several large tables filled with relevant information. Fitting that all in on a MacBook screen might be a tight squeeze.

It feels like Safari has been around forever, but Apple first launched its browser in 2003. Before that, Mac users primarily relied upon Microsoft's Internet Explorer , although, Opera, Netscape, and Mozilla were well known and good solutions as well. Google's Chrome followed soon after and, over the years, the browser wars have settled into a fairly consistent rendering and performance level, making the differentiating factor more about user-friendliness as well as   the overall look and feel of the browser. Apple usually opts for minimizing the appearance and letting the website shine, but there are ways to show even more of a website's content with Safari.

Switching to full screen mode is the quickest way to hide all of Safari's chrome, the developer terminology for the user interface, including the address bar, tab bar, and any other controls that are open. Basically, the entire screen becomes a window to the current website. To enter full screen on a MacBook , simply hold the globe key, also known as the function key, and tap the letter 'F.' Tapping the escape key will exit full screen mode. On a Mac that doesn't have such a key on its keyboard, a combination of control and the command key, which looks a bit like a four-leaf clover, plus the letter 'F' switches to full-screen. This is as much screen space as possible, but there is a way to see even more of a web page. Also, Apple gives Safari users ways to minimize the chrome without hiding it all.

See More Website, Less Safari

With Safari on the Mac, some controls can be hidden to allow more room for content while keeping the tab bar visible. Under the View menu, there are options to show or hide the favorites bar and sidebar. Full screen can be accessed from this menu as well. Reader mode, also found there, offers a different type of content viewing that hides ads and removes the website's styling, instead formatting the page in a narrow column with a large font. For anyone looking for a distraction-free view of an article, going to Reader and full screen displays the words and photos in a minimalist fashion. For those running macOS Monterey , opening preferences from the Safari menu and choosing compact tabs will merge the search field and the tab bar together, an easy way to gain vertical space, which is tight on a MacBook, but might be less of an issue on a desktop Mac.

Another way to view more of a website on a Mac computer is to zoom out, which is easily accomplished by holding the command key and tapping the minus key. Zooming back in is done with a combination of command and equals key, which is the same key used for the plus sign but there is no need to hold the shift key. Command plus the zero key restores the zoom level to normal. Zooming affects both text, images and other graphics on a page and Safari remembers the zoom level set for each website, so upon returning it will default to the magnification used at the last visit, which is a nice touch by Apple . If there is a need to reduce images and graphics on a website, but keep text readable, under the advanced preferences pane, there is an option to set a minimum font size. Apple's Safari offers several ways to customize the view of a website to help the user see more of the content and less of the browser.

  • iPadOS safari video play, progress bar does not auto-hide after using slide over. Hi, I like to watch YouTube video using safari instead of using the app on my iPad, because Safari in iPadOS supports keyboard control. However, there is an annoying bug that makes it awful to use. And this bug is easily reproducible, I tested on two of my iPad Pros: iPad Pro 10.5 and my new iPad Pro 12.9 4th gen. Both devices are updated to the latest version of iOS 13. Here is the detailed procedures to reproduce it: Open safari on iPadOS, open YouTube.com, play a video. Now when video starts to play, the progress bar disappear after a few seconds. If it doesn’t disappear, I will use Apple Pencil to touch the empty space right below the progress bar, and there is an feedback on the graphics that feels like the entire progress bar is selected. Then after a few seconds the progress bar will hide. Then use the slide over. It could be email, file, whatever. When you use the slide over, the progress bar of the video will show up immediately. Now you pull the slide over floating window back to the drawer and use Safari in full screen. From now on, the progress bar will never hide, no matter what you do, until you refresh the page. I hope this problem can draw some attention from the dev team and can be fixed in the upcoming update. Or please let me know if there are any work around. Thanks in advance! 8478 6

Do you want Safari to fill the screen instead of looking like a window every time you open it? Fortunately, you're just a few menu clicks away from that! By default, Safari will open as a window, but this wikiHow article teaches how to have Safari on your Mac open in full-screen all the time!

Things You Should Know

  • Maximize Safari by clicking the green icon and selecting "Enter Full Screen."
  • Alternatively, use keyboard shortcuts like "Cmd + Ctrl + F" to make Safari full-screen.
  • Once Safari is in full-screen mode, go to "System Settings > General" and uncheck the box next to "Close windows…"

Step 1 Click the green

  • Alternatively, press a keyboard shortcut to enter Full Screen without using your mouse. For macOS Big Sur and earlier, press Cmd + Ctrl + F . For macOS Monterey and later, press Fn + F . [2] X Research source Press those shortcut buttons again or Esc to close full-screen.
  • Move your mouse over areas to reveal hidden objects when Safari is full screen. For example, the Dock is hidden when you use Safari in full screen. Simply make it appear again by moving your mouse to wherever your Dock is.

Step 1 Open System Settings.

  • If you're using an older version of macOS, "System Settings" will instead be "System Preferences."

Step 2 Click Desktop & Dock.

  • If you're using an older macOS version, this is a checkbox in "General" instead. Make sure it's unchecked so your Safari windows will not be closed when you quit the application.
  • Press Cmd + Q to quit Safari without closing any windows. If you go to your open windows and close them with "Cmd + W," then you won't be able to restore that window by opening Safari again. Instead, press Cmd + Q to be able to re-open that window in full-screen mode whenever you open Safari.

Expert Q&A
