TOUR ICELAND WITH THE AUTHOR

Our company, who is the intended audience for a geology tour, why plan a trip.

geological tour iceland

ADVENTURE GEOLOGY TOURS-ICELAND  is owned and operated by geologist Dr. Tamie J. Jovanelly, the author of the AWARD-WINNING & BEST-SELLING book,  Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics, and Glacial Features (Wiley, 2020). She also leads tours to Costa Rica, Cuba, Arctic Circle, Ireland, and more.

Visit www.icelandgeologytours.com or www.adventuregeologytours or email [email protected] for more information

It was their love for the country that motivated her and her husband to build a trip that focused on the geological landscapes that are inescapable, breath taking, and even more fascinating when their origin is explained. When you choose ADVENTURE GEOLOGY TOURS- ICELAND we will take you to all the famous “selfie spots” that you’ve seen on Facebook, but unlike your friends who visited, you will walk away with a deeper appreciation of nature through the geologically-focused lectures and daily interpretation. Additionally, our tour offers many more active experiences than the big-box competition with visits to museums, geothermal power plants, lava caves, boat tours, glacial hikes, and geothermal spas, like the popular Blue Lagoon. Plus, as an added bonus, the charismatic company owners are a heck of a lot of fun!   “Active exploration with enthusiastic geologists” is our company mantra. Consider joining a trip as a solo-traveler, couple, family, or group and let’s learn some geology!

geological tour iceland

No doubt, Iceland is a country rooted in geologic wonder. As an example, this island that is about the size of Virginia currently has 32 active volcanoes, hosts the largest glacier in Europe, and is currently spreading apart at about 2 cm/year. Taking a guided tour of the country with a geologist will not only help you to capture the islands natural beauty, but increasingly enhance it through detailed descriptions linking the relationships between structure, process, and time to the island’s evolution.

These tours are intended for people who are interested in learning about the formation of the many unique landscapes found on the island. Please note that a background in geology is not necessary to be a trip participant. Instead, prior to trip departure Dr. Jovanelly will provide you with introductory-level reading materials that will highlight relevant geological concepts (e.g. plate tectonics, rock cycle, glacial dynamics, volcanics). This background material will build your foundational knowledge in geology so that you will be prepared to engage in more advanced content as presented during the trip.

Also, please know that the content of the trip can be altered for school or university groups who are interested in learning advanced concepts.

Three typical Icelandic landscapes (Photo collage: Fran Cano Cabal)

Explore spectacular scenery and a geologic overview of Iceland with a virtual field trip led by volcanologist Kirt Kempter , who has led more than 30 tours to the country for the Smithsonian since his first visit in 1995.

Geologic highlights include the boundary between North American and Eurasian plates; unusual volcanoes that form beneath vast glaciers; famous volcanic eruptions including those of the small island Heimey in 1973 and ice-capped Eyjafjallajökul in 2010; and older historic eruptions that impacted global climate and human populations.

Kempter’s presentation employs maps, photographs, diagrams, and Google Earth images to spotlight the key geologic features that make Iceland a bucket-list destination for all geologists.

The Reykjanes Peninsula

REYKJANES This peninsula is a true geological wonderland.  The Bridge Between Continents spans over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, allowing you to literally walk from the North American tectonic plate over to the Eurasian tectonic plate.  At Gunnuhver, you can tread (carefully!) amongst an impressive collection of boiling mud pools and steaming fumaroles.  Or, take an unforgettable journey inside Þríhnúkagígur, a dormant volcano - all the way from the top crater to the bottom of the magma chamber.  The fishing village of Grindavík is home to a fascinating museum that features an exhibit on geothermal energy in Iceland.  And the colorful hills at the geothermal field Krýsuvík create one of Iceland’s most striking landscapes. BLÁA LÓNIР Popularly referred to by its English name “the Blue Lagoon,” this geothermal spa is arguably one of Iceland’s most popular attractions.  Although it blends seamlessly with the lava fields that surround it, it’s a man-made lagoon, fed by surplus water from the adjacent Svartsengi Power Station.  The warm water is rich in minerals such as silica and sulphur, and is renowned for its unique healing properties.

Hraunfossar Summer2015.jpg

Borgarfjörður

BORGARFJÖRÐUR A region often referred to as “the saga valley of western Iceland” since it served as the stage for many significant events in the literary masterpieces that Iceland is known for.  Home to Hraunfossar, a remarkable series of waterfalls formed by water emerging from a porous lava field, and Barnafoss, a cluster of robust rapids with a tragic story behind their name.

Askja Lake and Viti Crater.jpg

AKUREYRI  Nicknamed “the capital of the North,” this small, bustling city is nestled in a beautiful fjord just south of the Arctic Circle, and the surrounding region is packed with incredible natural wonders.   Marvel at the magical waterfall, Goðafoss, and Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.  Explore the volcanic area around Krafla, the spectacular sulphur fields at Námaskarð, the dramatic lava formations at Dimmuborgir, and the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir. MÝVATN The fourth largest lake in Iceland.  Frequent lava flows have left Mývatn very irregular in shape, and few areas offer such a wide spectrum of geological formations.  The lake lies on an active volcanic belt where eruptions are frequent and intense geothermal activity results in bubbling mud pools, steaming solfataras, and brightly-colored mineral deposits.  Relax in the sublime Jarðböðin við Mývatn, a bathing lagoon filled with mineral-rich, geothermally-heated water.

EyjafjallajokullTrip20112_12_13.JPG

JÖKULSÁRLÓN A stunning glacial lagoon filled with icebergs that have calved off the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull and are heading out to sea.  It is abundant with fish that have drifted in from the ocean, and you may catch a glimpse of seals swimming around the lagoon looking to reap the bounty. SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK  Part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park, Skaftafell is a masterpiece of seemingly impossible contrasts of nature.  The landscape in the park has considerable variety and has been formed over thousands of years by the influences of ice, fire, and water.  The waterfall Svartifoss is one of Skaftafell's best known attractions, mainly for the towering black basalt columns that flank it. KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR  Home to Kirkjugólf (“church floor”). A church was, in fact, never situated here, but this natural attraction was formed when lava cooled quickly and contracted, forming hexagonal pillars that look like tiles.  Nearby is Fjaðrárgljúfur, a canyon that, while not particularly impressive in size, is absolutely breathtaking.  The canyon is cut from the volcanic rock palagonite and the walls are blanketed in a vibrant green moss.  Also in the vicinity is the volcanic fissure Lakagígar.  This system erupted in the late 18th century and wreaked havoc around the globe – 6 million people died in the aftermath, making it the deadliest eruption in historical times. VÍK  The southernmost village in Iceland, renowned for the breathtaking black beaches of Reynisfjara and the basalt columns of Reynisfjall that appear like a stairway to the sky.  Just offshore, three basalt sea stacks known collectively as Reynisdrangar rise up against the unrelenting waves of the North Atlantic. According to local folklore, these formations are not rocks at all, but trolls that were turned to stone at sunrise.  And to the west lies Dýrholaey, a promontory formed by a submarine volanic eruption and known for its large, distinctive archway. SELJALANDSFOSS  One of the most picturesque waterfalls in all of Iceland.  Here, the river Seljalandsá drops 200 feet over the cliffs of what used to be the island‘s coastline.  If favorable conditions allow (and if you don‘t mind getting a bit wet!), it is possible to walk behind the waterfall. EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL The Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Centre lies right at the foot of the now world-famous volcano. The center is operated by the family of the Þorvaldseyri farmstead that has thrived in the looming shadow of the glacier and active volcano for generations. A short film shown at the center spotlights the remarkable challenges faced by the family in the wake of the historic eruption in 2010. HVERAGERÐI A town that plays a central role in Icelandic horticulture thanks to the abundance of geothermal activity in the area that is harnessed for use in greenhouses.  Frequent (but usually minor) earthquakes are the norm here. VESTMANNAEYJAR An archipelago formed by submarine volcanic eruptions and located a short ferry ride from the southern mainland.  Heimaey is the largest and most populated of the islands and a historical eruption of Eldfell in 1973 nearly rendered it inhabitable.  Although the eruption came without warning, the 5300 residents of the island were evacuated within hours, and seawater was used to slow the lava flow that was threatening to destroy the harbor – the island’s main source of income and livelihood.

Thingvellir AG7.JPG

Golden Circle

ÞINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Iceland’s most fascinating places due to both its impressive geological formations and for the significant role it plays in the country's history as the original meeting site of the Icelandic parliament, the oldest existing parliament in the world. GULLFOSS A majestic double waterfall that tumbles 105 feet into the canyon of Hvítá, one of the longest rivers in Iceland. GEYSIR Located in the Haukadalur geothermal area, this is the geyser from which the English word is derived. Geysir itself is now dormant, but an adjacent geyser, Strokkur, erupts at 5-10 minute intervals.

Small-Group 9-Hour Golden Circle Geology Tour with Transfer from Reykjavik

A person sits on the rocks surrounding the Oxararfoss waterfall in Thingvellir National Park.

Description

Explore Iceland’s most famous sightseeing route, the Golden Circle, by booking this incredible nine-hour excursion. Those eager to discover some of Iceland’s most breathtaking sights and discover more about its geology should book this small-group tour now.

The tour starts with pick-up from the bus stop outside the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik. You’ll meet the expert guide leading the day’s adventure and the other guests participating.

This geology tour is a small-group tour with a maximum of six guests, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions about the geology of the Golden Circle sights. The guide is a qualified geologist with in-depth knowledge of the attractions you’ll visit.

The first stop is Thingvellir National Park. Both culturally and geologically important to Iceland, Thingvellir National Park is the oldest national park in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are visible at this national park. Your guide will give you more information about the geology of these plates and tell you about the park’s cultural significance - it’s the place where the Icelandic parliament was formed in 930 A.D.

While in the national park, you’ll see the Oxararfoss waterfall, a two-drop waterfall that cascades over the Almannagja gorge. The Oxararfoss waterfall is 44 feet (around 13 meters) high and 20 feet (about six meters) wide. You may recognize it as it appeared in an episode of Game of Thrones.

Next, it’s time to visit the Geysir geothermal area. You can see the geysers, smell the sulfur, and feel the heat from the hot springs. Geysir is no longer active, but you’ll see Strokkur erupting every 5 to 10 minutes. You’ll have time for a short lunch break here.

Once you’ve refueled, it’s onwards to Gullfoss waterfall. Gullfoss, which translates to “golden falls,” is located in the Hvita river canyon in Southwest Iceland. It’s a spectacular view, and you’ll see the water cascade over 100 feet (roughly 32 meters) in two stages.

The last stop on this geology tour is the Kerid volcanic crater, created around 6,500 years ago when a volcano erupted. The crater slopes are red because of the fresh iron deposits left there, and the water in the crater lake is an intense azure blue. Its vibrant colors make it a magnificent sight.

Once you’ve finished marveling at the amazing sights on the Golden Circle, your guide will drop you off in Reykjavik. From here, you can head home or continue your adventures in Iceland.

Don’t miss this fascinating geological tour of the Golden Circle’s natural attractions. Check availability now by choosing a date.

  • sagahl_fb2020 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour guides and fun to be around! I had the honor to work with Tamie and Joey as they were finalizing the details of their tours in Iceland. They have an amazing talent for creating a geology tour that non-geologists can also fully enjoy. They managed to find the perfect balance between activities and free-time. Attention to detail, great sightseeing spots and they are a joy to work with. All in all, they manage to be great tour guides as well as tour operators. Read more Written November 15, 2022
  • Ginney55 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Exceeded Expectations Its not often when a tour gets my highest marks but my trip to Iceland in 2022 with Iceland Geology Tours was outstanding. Our trip leadersTamie Jovanelly and Joe Cook were the best. I went on the first of two Association of Women Geologist (AWG) trips during the summer of 2022. Most of us were geologist by training but there were a few who weren't and the trip was enjoyed by all. It helps that Tamie " Dr. Jovanelly" wrote the book (literally) " Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics and Glacial Features" and that she has been going to Iceland for over a decade. The tour is designed for the active participant and we climbed an outlet glacier, boated amongst icebergs in a glacial lagoon and scaled numerous cinder cones. Tamie and Joe always made me feel successful even though I am a boomer well into retirement. They were able to meld our group who ranged from 20 somethings with those close to their 80s. I liked that the tour guides knew which stops were interesting and what time was best to get there to hike, take pictures and avoid crowds (sometimes impossible in this small country). Highlights for me were walking on a fresh lava flow which was still off gassing, visiting a geothermal plant and hiking on a glacier (this part I could have done all day). I love the fact that we circumnavigated Iceland and had a diverse experience of accommodations from guest houses to farm stays. We even had the opportunity to milk cows, ride horses and whale watch (non very geologic). The schedule is packed but it also had free days where we could relax and sightsee at our own pace. Tamie and Joe were the best and so attentive to everybody's needs. Their attention to details was awesome and they made the travel seem effortless. Prior to the trip we had several zoom meetings that prepared us for travel and allowed us to meet the other participants, which I found helpful. I would definitely recommend traveling with Iceland Geology Tours or any other tours that Tamie and Joe plan. On the negative side, I would say that the weather in Iceland is unpredictable and often wet and gray, but after all it is the arctic. Rain pants, rain jacket, gloves and hiking boots are a must have on this trip at anytime of the year. Leave the umbrellas at home no one uses them in Iceland. Five stars! I would do it again! My one addition is that this is not a confining "group tour". There was plenty of freedom to add individuality to one's day.....in adventuring, eating and finding alone time. I'm already awaiting the sign up for my next tour with Tamie and Joey. Read more Written September 5, 2022
  • ethanpnw 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Ten out of ten! Don't know how it could be better! I'll start by saying that I am not a geologist, yet this was still one of the top trips of my life, unforgettable! Dr. Tamie Jovanelly and her husband Joey are a wonderful team and coordinated an excellent group trip. We went to all the cool spots you see advertised, and much more! We learned a lot about geology in fun and easy-to-understand ways... geology facts that will blow your mind! Iceland is such a unique place with lots to see but this tour makes me feel like I didn't miss anything. They were great at organizing and making sure we were well-prepared and knew what to expect. The food was delicious, accommodations were great, and the activities were well-spaced. The group felt like each day topped the last in unbelievable ways. We had some action-packed days followed by restful days. We saw a recent lava flow, hiked on a glacier, went on a boat in a glacial lagoon, saw icebergs on a black sand beach, hiked to multiple huge breathtaking waterfalls, explored rocky and sandy beaches, toured a geothermal power plant, talked to a local ranger, went inside a lava tube, hiked to the top of volcano craters, saw smelly fumaroles and mud pots, watched geysers blow, and so much more. They made travel stress-free by handling all the logistics as well as covering lots of details, including music that matched our itinerary for the day. They are super fun to travel with as well as kind and interesting people. I cannot rave about them enough and would join them on another trip in a heartbeat! Read more Written July 29, 2022

I knew very little about this little country before going, so I was anxious to learn more. This guided tour was absolutely incredible! Dr. Tamie Jovanelly knows the island like the back of her hand, and she is highly knowledgable of Icelandic geology as well as geology in general. She maximized our time while we were there without making the trip feel rushed or too crammed. We got to hike on a glacier, visit the Blue Lagoon Spa, trek up and down a volcano, and so much more! This really is a land of fire and ice and deserves to be seen. If you want a fun, yet well-planned tour of Iceland look no further! • Carley C 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Trip of a lifetime I went to Iceland with Dr. Jovanelly in the summer of 2018 on a study abroad trip. I can't imagine going to Iceland without her. This is by far the best way to see everything you need to see in Iceland with an expert on Iceland Geology. As someone who is fairly well traveled, Iceland is the coolest place in the whole world and Dr. Jo makes certain that you see the common tourist sights and also the spots that the other tours don't make. She gives you not only an introduction to the geology and history of Iceland, but also the culture there. I loved the glacial walk and the ice cave the very best. Go on this trip, you will not regret it! Read more Written April 22, 2019

  • SaltNSublimes 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best way to experience glaciers and volcanoes! Exploring Iceland with a leading geologist-teacher-adventurer in her field, Dr. Jo helped me see that to truly appreciate the island culturally and historically is to know the fire and ice that shaped it geologically. With more than 10 years of generating authentic experiences in Iceland on and beyond the Game of Thrones tourist paths, Dr. Jo opens up the more remote treasures most visitors find difficult to access especially the active volcano system Hekla and the massively perspective-changing Vatnajökull Glacier. Her years of building a network of contacts and local connections throughout the country also ensured we had opportunities for meaningful conversations with local Icelanders, whose unique perspectives profoundly shaped the way I perceive the world. Day 2 – Volcano adventure in the Reykjanes peninsula

Today you explore the nearby Reykjanes peninsula. From Reykjavík, it’s an easy drive to go visit Grindavík, the Reykjanes Lighthouse and cross the Bridge Between Continents.

Reykjanes is also home to a series of eruption sites caused by the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system. If you’re up for it and the weather allows, you can take on the hike to go see the fresh lava fields up close.

That said, we recommend booking a guided tour for safety reasons. The trail is around 7 km (4 mi) each way, so around 4 hours of walking in total. You’ll need to be in good shape to be able to do it and wear the appropriate footwear and clothes.

After your hike, drive on to Hveragerði for your overnight stay.

Day 3 – Highlights of the Golden Circle

Today you have the option to start with a visit to the Lava Tunnel. Then dive into the highlights of the Golden Circle, a famous route full of stunning natural attractions. Wander around Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the geological wonders of the world. Here you can see the effects of the tectonic plate movements, which have opened various cracks and fissures in the Earth’s crust.

Continue on to the famous Geysir area where you can witness the impressive Strokkur hot spring erupting every 5-10 minutes. You’ll also find several other smaller springs boiling and bubbling nearby. Last but not least, pass by one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls, Gullfoss.

Day 4 – Into the highlands

Take on the unforgettable journey to Landmannalaugar in the highlands. To reach the colorful rhyolite mountains, you will be crossing rivers and mountain passes. You’ll travel across lava fields and moon-like scenery for a true highlight of the Icelandic landscape.

Here you can walk between colorful mountains, admire black obsidian lava fields, and dip in hot springs by wild rivers. It is an ideal location for hiking and you’ll get comprehensive information about all the hiking tracks from the mountain hut.

Later, continue your journey over lava fields along the highland road to Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Day 5 – Laki craters and eruptive fissure

You have another day of delving into the volcanic wonders of Iceland. Start by exploring Laki, or Lakagígar. It is a volcanic fissure of 27 km (16 mi) created in 1783 and located in the western part of the Vatnajökull National Park.

Then continue on to Fjaðrárgljúfur, an impressive canyon that shows off the grandeur of Iceland. It is believed to have been formed at the end of the last Ice Age, around 9,000 years ago.

Day 6 – Along the south coast

Travel to one of the most popular and beautiful sights of Iceland, Skaftafell National Park. Skaftafell is a breathtaking area located at the foot of the Vatnajökull glacier. So you know you’re in for a stunning backdrop.

You have so many choices of activities today. Follow some of the hiking trails, capture the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall, or you could book a guided glacier walk for a memorable excursion. Then comes another spectacular sight, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Enormous icebergs are constantly breaking off the glacier and bobbing their way across the lagoon out to sea.

Later, follow the south coast all the way to the village of Vík í Mýrdal. A walk onto the nearby black sand beach is a must! Continue along the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers to Skógar, where we recommend stopping by its waterfall and folk museum.

Day 7 – The Westman Islands

Today you get to experience one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets, the volcano island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands archipelago. On your way to the ferry crossing, you can stop by Seljalandsfoss. This famous waterfall is where you can walk behind the water curtain for an iconic view and photo opportunity.

Then you’ll journey to Heimaey, a gem of an island. Learn about its history and the volcano eruption of 1973. Hike to the top of Mount Eldfell, discover the elephant rock formation, and sail around the islands. You may even catch sight of whales, seals, and puffins.

In the afternoon, you’ll take a ferry to the mainland and drive back to Reykjavík.

Day 8 – Departure

Your journey to fabulous Iceland is coming to an end today. Drive back to Keflavík Airport to return your vehicle and catch your flight home. Depending on your flight time, you may be able to squeeze in a few last activities in Reykjavík, for a final taste of what this colorful capital city has to offer.

Join an unforgettable tour of Iceland’s majestic landscapes, timed to give you days filled with volcanic and geological adventure, and evening opportunities to see the Aurora Borealis.

Volcanologist Tamsin Mather and local guides will accompany you as you discover the awe-inspiring might of the planet and marvel at the sights, sounds and smells of erupting geysers, hot springs and bubbling fumaroles. You will get up close to stunning glaciers, waterfalls and tectonic plates pulling apart.

On four of the nights, you will be staying in stunning rural locations with little light pollution, so ideal for observing the Aurora Borealis. Plus three nights in the world's northernmost capital, the coastal city of Reykjavik.

In partnership with Intrepid Travel.

DAY 1: ARRIVE REYKJAVIK

Welcome to Iceland! Check in to the Hotel Reyjavik Saga and meet your tour leader and your fellow guests, followed by a tour briefing.

In the evening, Volcanologist Tamsin Mather will give the first of three talks on Iceland’s formation at the centre of the North Atlantic Ocean and the volcanic processes demonstrated across the island.

Tamsin and the tour leader will then accompany you for a group dinner in the hotel.

DAY 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE TO HVOLSVOLLUR VALLEY VIA GEYSIR AND THE GULLFOSS WATERFALL

Accompanied by Tamsin, you will visit Þingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland's first parliament, founded in 930, and a geological wonder where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. Next, head to Iceland's Geysir geothermal area, where you'll see the Strokkur geyser shoot water 30 metres into the air. The immense beauty and sheer power of the Gullfoss Waterfall, also known as Golden Falls, can be spellbinding and after seeing that you will continue on to the Hvolsvollur Valley.

Tonight, you will check in to the Hotel Stracta for two nights, a four-star hotel near the south coast. Far away from the city and an ideal location to observe the Northern Lights. If the skies are clear tonight, why not take a stroll out into the snow and look skywards for the dancing green lights.

Tamsin will then give a second talk on her work around the world and the findings from her research.

DAY 3: HVOLSVOLLUR AREA INCLUDING THE  GÍGJÖKULL GLACIER

After breakfast, meet your Superjeep drivers and head to the elegant Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and walk behind the plummeting falling stream without getting (too) wet, for a unique viewing angle.

After drying off, continue to the legendary Thórsmörk valley, nestled in between three glaciers, with a stop at the Gígjökull glacier further up in the valley. It is here you will be able to observe the rock destruction caused by extreme glacial melt during the 2010 eruption of the glacier volcano Eyjafjallajökull. It is truly a magnificent site and made all the more engaging as Tamsin will bring to life and explain the powerful forces behind the eruption.

In superjeeps, you will cross the deep and roaring rivers that guard the wooded surroundings of Thórsmörk, and you will have time to hike around the area and admire some of the many viewpoints it offers. Thorsmörk is Iceland‘s most popular hiking area, and visitors are captivated by its natural beauty and charm.

At the end of the day, return to the Hotel Stracta, where Tamsin will give a third talk on some of the amazing sites you will visit later in the tour. This is Tamsin’s final day accompanying you, but don’t worry, the Icelandic tour guides we use and who will accompany you on the rest of the tour, are particularly knowledgeable and engaging. Not only about geology, volcanoes and glaciers but also all aspects of life in Iceland, its history, culture and politics. All told with an Icelandic dry sense of humour.

DAY 4: SOUTH COAST – SKOGAFOSS WATERFALL AND JOKULSARLON GLACIER LAGOON

Start the day with a trip to the eerily beautiful Skógafoss waterfall. It is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, stretching 25 metres wide and dropping down 60 metres. You can get up close and feel its power, and also climb a windy set of stairs up to a stunning viewpoint. On a sunny day, you should be able to spot rainbows in the spray. Continue along Iceland's South Shore to take in more of the country’s renowned natural wonders. From the stepping-stone rock formations of Reynisdrangar, the promontory of Dyrhólaey, and the night black sand beach of Reynisfjara, this is one of the country's most scenic regions. En route, you will pass the lava of the Laki eruption of 1782 to 1783.

In the afternoon, you will visit the famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a stunning sea of floating icebergs with blues that contrast vividly with the charcoal-coloured sand of the beach.

You will rest for the night at the stylish Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon. Weather permitting, there will be another opportunity to step outside to witness the natural wonders of the Northern Lights tonight and its rural location away from town lights will make the phenomena much brighter.

DAY 5: VATNAJOKULL GLACIER

Today, you will visit Europe's biggest icecap – Vatnajokull – which has around 30 glaciers flowing out from it. It is sobering to think that the ice cap has been shrinking because of global warming, and in future years the glaciers may be gone. You will arrive by superjeep, take a short 30 minute walk and depending on weather conditions, you will either walk across some of the glacier or visit a stunning ice cave underneath it.  No experience is necessary to partake in the hike, but if you would like to opt-out, just embark on a hike to the glacier's tongue or return to the glacier lagoon at Jokulsarlon or Fjallsarlon.

Later on today, journey to the black sand seaside town of Vik for lunch. With the sea on one side and high cliffs on the other, this dramatically positioned quaint village is Iceland's most southerly mainland settlement.

In the evening, you will check into the family run Hotel Dyrhólaey, near the town of Vik, but in a rural location ideal for experiencing the night sky.

DAY 6: LAVA CENTRE, THE SECRET LAGOON AND REYKJAVIK

This morning, you will make your way to the Lava Centre, which is an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. The centre introduces the Katla Geopark plus Iceland’s elaborate monitoring system for surveying volcanos and earthquake zones. After the visit, you will continue to the Secret Lagoon natural hot springs. Located in a small village called Fludir, this will give you the opportunity to relax in the warm thermal waters before travelling to Reykjavik and checking back into the hotel where the remainder of the day will be at leisure.

DAY 7: REYKJANES PENINSULA

Head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula. It is a land-based, highly volcanic counterpart of the Mid-Atlantic ridge, where two tectonic plates part at an average rate of more than 2 centimetres per year. Four volcanic systems and fissure swarms line the peninsula and contain open fissures, high-temperature geothermal fields and volcanic fissures.

The final itinerary will be decided on the day but is likely to include Gunnuhver (mud pools and steam vents), Stampar (volcanic fissures), the bridge between continents (literally where two continental plates are diverging) and Seltún (a high-temperature geothermal area). Although there is currently no fresh lava at the recently erupted Fagradalsfjal volcano, we also think this is well worth a visit.

On the final evening, there is a farewell dinner with your tour leader in the hotel, to celebrate your exploration of Iceland.

DAY 8: DEPART REYKJAVIK

Today is the departure day and time to say "sjáumst". Your group departure transfer will take you to the airport for your flight home.

  • Pingvellir National Park including Geysir and the Gullfoss waterfall
  • Talks and walking seminars from volcanologist Tamsin Mather

Photograph of the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010

Iceland’s landscape has been shaped by dramatic forces over 30 million years. Its formation and ongoing evolution offers a masterclass in geophysical processes. Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics, and Glacial Features , a book recently published by AGU, presents a comprehensive regional guide to the landscape of this unique island. We asked the author of the book some questions about why she finds Iceland such a special place to visit and study, and asked her to explain how the book will help both experienced and novice geologists navigate around the landscape.

What makes Iceland so interesting for geologists?

Iceland is a dynamic place where the power and beauty of geology can be witnessed at every turn. It is a geologically young island – less than 33 million years old – and its majestic landscapes are shaped by active plate tectonics , volcanics, and glacial movement . It is one of the only places in the world where a divergent plate boundary is exposed at the Earth’s surface! Furthermore, with 33 active volcanoes, the vast majority of all volcanic features found on Earth can be seen on an island the size of Kentucky or Switzerland.

Panoramic photo of one of Vatnajokull’s outlet glaciers

What are some of the most interesting lines of research as scientists seek to understand  Iceland’s ongoing evolution?

There are a few ongoing geological debates; here are just three. First, geologists continue to question how an island on a divergent plate boundary can have both silica-poor (mafic) magma and silica-rich (felsic) magma sources.

Second, a volcano on the southern coast, called Katla , has been dormant for more than 100 years. Historically known for its catastrophic eruptions, the intensity of the next eruption is of great concern to volcanologists, especially since its smaller neighbor, Eyjafjallajokull , erupted in 2010 producing an ash cloud that grounded 10,000 international flights between Europe and North America.

Third, geologists remain curious as to the effects of a warming climate on the island’s overall volcanism. As glacial ice melts and the basement rock uplifts, will that reduction in pressure allow for magma to more easily flow toward the surface?

How did you first get interested in Iceland?

In 2006 I was charged with the idea of starting a study abroad program at my institution, and Iceland was the first place that came to mind. Back then, it was still off the radar of most tourists, but I convinced my big brother to go with me for an initial site assessment. With the keys to a Toyota Yaris and a series of paper road maps, we circled the island in 11 days. Although we were perpetually lost, we found a pristine landscape with amazing views, incredible geology and few road signs. I was hooked.

Student group standing on Vatnajokull glacier

Over the course of the next decade I visited nearly every summer, bringing with me fortunate students who could keep up with the hiking, as well as my desire to explore everything about the island–including eating fermented shark meat, the national dish.

With the later advancement of GPS technology, and a newly acquired husband who has an amazing sense of direction, I have been able to traverse even the most remote parts of the country.

What is your favorite geological spot in Iceland and why?

I would pick the bridge between the Eurasian Plate and North American Plate, located on the Reykjanes Peninsula. For me, this is a place where the theory of plate tectonics shifts from being a diagram to something tangible – and spectacular! Standing at the bottom of the rift valley while being shadowed by the fault walls of the divergent plate boundary is an unspeakable feeling. This is one of my favorite places to bring students because there is always a “light-bulb moment” when these 101 concepts click after seeing them firsthand.

How does your book help visitors to understand the island?

This book is distinct from other literature written about Iceland as it provides a single, well-organized resource for learning about the geology of the island. I drew on the most up-to-date peer-reviewed scientific literature but tried to summarize it accessibly, so that the reader can appreciate the interesting, and sometimes debated, geological theories regarding an island splitting in half due to plate tectonic motion.

This text is not just intended for academics, but also for novice geologists who want to understand the magnificent scenery at a deeper level. To encourage this, I provide information on foundational geological concepts and a glossary, as well as figures and diagrams to explain concepts and processes.

Tamie Jovanelly standing on a columnar basalt formation

The book has been organized by region with travelers in mind. It highlights Iceland’s most popular natural landscape destinations while also putting each region into a contextual perspective. For easy reference, there are GPS coordinates for most locations mentioned in the text.

I hope to have both captured the island’s natural beauty and provided scientific context for the relationships between structure, process, and time in the island’s evolution.

What is your top advice for someone planning a trip to Iceland?

Front cover of book "Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics, and Glacial Features"

Iceland is a fairly expensive place to visit due to the high cost of food, transport, and accommodation, but it is possible to travel more cheaply.

For example, before you depart for Iceland, purchase a flexible bus pass that will allow you to hop on and off at any destination for a month.

Consider camping: you can purchase a camping pass that allows you to pitch a tent at any designated campsite around the island. Although they vary widely in amenities, they usually have running water and some sort of a shelter.

Also, be sure to stock up with supplies at the BONUS supermarket before you depart the capital city of Reykjavik.

As an alternative to a self-guided trip, you could join one of my guided tours. I decided to set up my own company, Iceland Geology Tours , to offer tours to people interested in learning about the formation of Iceland and its landscapes. The tours are suitable whether people are scientists or not.

Why Choose Adventure Geology Tours?

Travel with a geologist.

Dr. Tamie J. Jovanelly and her husband, Joe Cook, founded Adventure Geology Tours to share their love of geology and travel with you.

As guides, Dr. Jovanelly and Joe wanted to build trips that focus on the geological landscapes that are inescapable, breathtaking, and even more fascinating when their origin is explained. Additionally, our tour offers many more active experiences than the big-box competition with visits to museums, geothermal power plants, lava caves, boat tours, glacial hikes, and geothermal spas, and more. Plus, as an added bonus, the charismatic company owners are a heck of a lot of fun! “Active exploration with enthusiastic geologists” is our company mantra. Consider joining a trip as a solo-traveler, couple, family, or group and let’s learn some geology!

Bring your curiosity, sense of adventure, and eagerness to learn.

What makes our tours so unique.

As a geologist, professor, author, and international researcher, Dr. Tamie J. Jovanelly, has been exploring the geological complexities of our tour locations for almost two decades. Her research includes plate tectonics, volcanics, climate change, and hydrology. The recently published monograph, “Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics, and Glacial Features” (Wiley, 2020) is an example of her commitment to research. GeoWorld Travel offers geology trips,  tours and holidays to the world's most interesting geosites. Most geotours are led by GeoWorld Travel's founder, James Cresswell, as small group road trips for between 4 and 20 participants. Many of our geology trips visit Geoparks, National Parks, and World Heritage Sites, and can be searched for by the geological features they visit. No prior geological knowledge is required on these geology tours, and they will appeal to everyone from beginners to experts alike. On a GeoWorld Travel geology holiday the landscape is explained in an accessible way and while the rocks, volcanoes, fossils and glaciers are the star attractions of the trips, there will also be stunning scenery accompanied by incredible wildlife and fascinating human stories. GeoWorld Travel additionally places people on polar expedition cruises through our PolarWorld Travel website. “Geologising in a volcanic country is most delightful; besides the interest attached to itself, it leads you into most beautiful and retired spots."   Charles Darwin, 1876

By Robert C. Jones Jr. [email protected] 04-24-2024

Beneath an island named for ice flows some of the hottest rivers of all.

Iceland, home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe, sits atop a volcanic hot spot, with magma regularly breaching the surface, creating long, narrow fissures that spew lava, ash, and smoke.

“It’s a geological wonder on steroids,” Falk Amelung , a professor of marine geosciences at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science , said of the land of fire and ice, which boasts some 32 active volcanoes. “It is part of the mid-Atlantic ridge, which is a massive crack located on the ocean floor caused by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. When those plates pull apart, new magma rises, and that’s what triggers volcanic activity.”

A series of eruptions has rocked the island nation’s Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021, when volcanoes that had been dormant for almost 800 years suddenly roared to life, spitting out steam and lava.

Since late 2023, the eruptions have been especially frequent. Only days ago, the Icelandic Meteorological Office issued lava warnings, reporting that more volcanic activity near the Sundhnúkur area may be imminent.

Could climate change be contributing to the increase in Iceland’s volcanic activity?

Amelung believes so.

“There are two mechanisms at work,” the marine geoscientist said. “Large parts of Iceland were covered by ice caps. When they melt, there is less pressure on the magma chamber. So, for the magma it is easier to break the rock and travel to the Earth’s surface. This has caused the increase in volcanic activity in central Iceland in the past two decades.

“The other mechanism,” he continued, “is that hot rock melts when the overburden pressure reduces. This can be achieved by upward movement of the rock mass, which is the typical melt generation mechanism at hot spot volcanic systems, or directly by the melting of an overlying ice cap.”

Amelung is quite familiar with Iceland’s volcanology, having visited the island to use data from satellite-measured ground uplift to study its retreating ice caps.

He continues to be enthralled by its geology and the way in which climate affects it.

“Geologically speaking, it’s an amazing place, not only because of its tectonics but also because of the glaciers that respond rapidly to changes in the climate,” Amelung said. “During cold periods lasting a few hundreds of years, winter sea ice develops, temperatures drop dramatically, and Iceland freezes over and develops an ice sheet. There have been several little ice ages in the recent geological history when Iceland was partially or fully glaciated. And the glaciations are associated with changes in the ground surface elevation. When Iceland is covered by an ice sheet, the weight presses the ground down by up to 500 meters.”

Currently, Iceland’s Vatnajökull ice cap, which is the largest glacier in Europe, loses about 1 meter of ice per year. As a result, the ground is uplifting by 2 to 3 centimeters annually, according to Amelung. “And when the ice melts, volcanic activity increases,” he said.

Amelung recently taught a class on the geology of the Galápagos Islands as part of the Rosenstiel School’s UGalapagos program for undergraduates, comparing for students the similarities and differences between the volcanology of that famous archipelago and that of Iceland.

“They are both oceanic hot spot volcanic systems where the melt is generated by upwelling material in the Earth’s mantle,” he said. “But Iceland is sitting on a divergent plate boundary where new crust is generated as two tectonic plates move apart, which makes it easy for magma to escape to the Earth’s surface. In contrast, under the Galápagos volcanoes, the magma is accumulating in big magma chambers and the volcanoes erupt once the pressure in the chamber is high enough to rupture the surrounding rock.”

Amelung noted that the volcanism on both islands is of a basaltic nature. “The magmas are very hot and flow readily because they have low viscosity,” he said. “Therefore, the eruptions are not violently explosive. But the large lava flows can destroy property as we have seen in Iceland.”
