San Martín de Tours 2836

Se trata de dos edificios de Mario Roberto Álvarez en predios contiguos del barrio de Palermo, sobre la esquina de San Martín de Tours y Av. del Libertador, ambos torres llamados Santours I y II.

Si bien los lotes tienen dimensiones parecidas -alrededor de 800m2 cada uno- en el de la esquina se implanta una torre de planta cuadrada y sobre San Martín de Tours una placa rectangular perpendicular a la fachada. Ambas con veinticinco pisos de altura sobre la planta baja de accesos y tres subsuelos de cocheras. No obstante, la organización de las plantas tipo persiguen criterios muy semejantes. Núcleos de circulaciones verticales y húmedos concentrados en el centro de la planta, hacia la calle se ubican los estares, hacia el lado opuesto, los dormitorios.

La imagen exterior se configura a partir de la estructura resistente presente en las fachadas. En ambos casos las columnas perimetrales establecen una suerte de grilla en conjunto con las vigas que es completada por la suma de cerramientos verticales exteriores opacos y transparentes, e integran los taparrollos, barandas, equipos de aire acondicionado, etc., en una solución constructiva característica de la producción del Estudio.

Horses, equestrians, calvary soldiers, beggars, geese, poor people (and those who help them), alcoholics (and those who help them), people who run hotels, and people who make wine

Famous Miracles:

Martin was known to have many different prophetic visions that came true. People have also attributed many miracles of healing to him, both during his lifetime (when God reportedly healed a leper after Martin kissed him) and afterward, when people prayed to Martin in heaven to pray for their healing on Earth. During his lifetime, reportedly, three people were raised back to life from the dead (all in separate incidents) after Martin prayed for them.

A famous miracle related to horses in Martin's life happened when he was a soldier in the army in ancient Gaul (now France) riding a horse through a forest and encountered a beggar. Martin didn't have any money with him, so since he noticed that the beggar didn't have enough clothes to keep him warm, he used his sword to cut the heavy cloak that he was wearing in half to share with the beggar. Later, Martin had a miraculous vision of Jesus Christ wearing the cloak.

Martin spent a lot of time talking with pagans about Christianity, trying to inspire them to worship the Creator rather than the creation. One time he convinced a group of pagans to cut down a tree that they had worshiped while Martin stood directly in the path of it falling, praying that God would miraculously rescue him to show the pagans that God's power was at work. The tree then miraculously swerved in mid-air to miss Martin when it fell to the ground, and all of the pagans who witnessed that event put their trust in Jesus Christ.

An angel once miraculously helped Martin convince an emperor in Germany to free a prisoner who had been condemned to death. The angel appeared to the emperor to announce that Martin was on his way to visit and ask the emperor to free the prisoner. After Martin arrived and presented his request, the emperor agreed because of the angel's miraculous appearance to him, which convinced him that it was important to help.

Martin was born in Italy to pagan parents but discovered Christianity as a teen and converted to it. He served in the army of ancient Gaul (now France) as a teen and young man.

Through the years, Martin was persecuted for his Christian beliefs but remained faithful to his convictions. He often began relationships with pagans (like his parents were) to tell them about Jesus Christ, and some of them (including his mother) converted to Christianity. Martin destroyed pagan temples and built churches on the sites of where the temples had been.

After the Bishop of Tours died, Martin reluctantly became the next bishop in 372 because he was the most popular choice of the people in the area. He founded a monastery called Marmoutier, where he focused on prayer and helping people in need until his death in 397.

The Basilica of Saint-Martin is an important church in the location where Saint-Martin was buried, in the centre of Tours in the Indre-et-Loire department. You will visit the town as you explore the Loire Valley.

France This Way review: although it is not the principal religious monument in Tours, the basilica of Saint-Martin is an imposing church in the town centre with an interesting history (several relics of the earlier basilica on the site can also be seen), and merits a visit as you explore the historic centre of the town.

A church has stood in this approximate location since the 5th century, after Saint-Martin of Tours died in 397 AD and a small oratory was built over his burial site in 437 AD. By the end of the 5th century a basilica had been built and in the following centuries this was further enlarged.

At the beginning of the 9th century the basilica was classified as a collegiale church, and approximately 200 monks were based here.

Rebuilt and expanded in the 11th century, and further expanded in the 13th century, the basilica became one of the largest churches in the Christian world. Several chapels and a double ambulatory behind the altar were part of this imposing structure.

The church was looted in the 16th century and became a stable after the French revolution. By the end of the 18th century the basilica was in a very poor condition after the vaults had collapsed and it was demolished as part of a plan to improve traffic flow through the centre of Tours.

The Tour de l'Horloge, the Tour Charlemagne and one side of the cloister are all that remain of this original structure.

The Rue des Halles (the road in front of the current basilica) was constructed approximately in the position of the east-west axis of the original basilica, and Rue Descartes (the road to the side of the current basilica) is in the position of the south transept of the original basilica.

Light coloured paving stones can be seen in Rue des Halles that mark the position of the columns in the nave in the original basilica.

The current basilica was built at the end of the 19th century in the neo-byzantine style after the tomb of Saint-Martin had been re-discovered in 1860, underneath a house. The building of the church followed long arguments - some believed the new basilica should be rebuilt in the same location and with the same dimensions as the original, with the Rue des Halles being closed and built on.

This plan was ultimately rejected and the basilica we see today is much smaller than the original.

The photo above shows the layout and size of the original basilica of Saint-Martin - I have outlined the area in red to make it more visible. This also helps to understand where the Tour de l'Horloge and the Tour Charlemagne were in the original church.

The current basilica of Saint-Martin is oriented north-south instead of the original east-west (which is much more common in churches) because of the constraints of the land available.

There is a large bronze statue of Saint-Martin blessing the town from the top of the dome, recently restored, and an engraving on the facade that celebrates the town having Saint-Martin as patron.

The church is typical of neo-byzantine churches from this period. The interior of the basilica has a main nave, separated from two side naves by rows of columns in polished granite, and a large painted dome above the transept with a row of windows to allow light to enter the structure.

Inside the crypt of the basilica you can see a replica of the tomb of Saint-Martin, although most of his relics are no longer in the church.

There is no charge to enter the basilica of Saint-Martin when you visit Tours.

Sobre San Martín de Tours

San Martín de Tours nació en 316 o 336 en lo que ahora es Hungría. Su padre era un soldado de alto rango. Martin creció en el norte de Italia, donde su padre fue asignado para servir.

Los padres de Martin eran ambos paganos, pero él decidió de forma independiente convertirse al cristianismo cuando tenía diez años.

Cuando Martin tenía quince años, se le pidió que comenzara a servir en el ejército. Se cree que viajó a la Galia, Milán y Tréveris cuando era un joven soldado. Durante este tiempo, en un momento se encontró con un mendigo frío. Martin cortó su propia capa por la mitad y le dio la mitad al mendigo. Esa noche, Jesús se le apareció a Martín en un sueño como el mendigo.

Cuando Martin tenía veinte años, su conciencia comenzó a inquietarlo acerca de pelear en la batalla. Antes de una gran batalla cerca de la actual Worms en Alemania, anunció que no iría a la batalla y rechazó su paga.

Fue acusado de cobardía y habría sido encarcelado, pero en cambio dijo que iría a la batalla desarmado. Sus superiores estuvieron de acuerdo, pero se pidió una tregua antes de que tuviera lugar la batalla.

Desde que Martin fue relevado del servicio militar, dedicó su vida más plenamente a la Iglesia. Comenzó a estudiar con San Hilario de Poitiers en Tours.

Después de que San Hilario se vio obligado a exiliarse, Martín viajó a Italia. Mientras viajaba, Martin fue retenido por un ladrón, pero lo convirtió. Por esta época, Martín también tuvo una visión que lo hizo volver a ver a su madre. Luego convenció a su madre para que se convirtiera al cristianismo. También intentó convertir a su padre, pero no hay evidencia de que su padre se haya convertido.

Entonces, Martín comenzó a combatir la herejía arriana. Los líderes arrianos se enfurecieron por su interferencia y se vio obligado a huir a una isla. Vivió allí como un ermitaño durante algún tiempo.

Cuando St. Hilary regresó a Tours, Martin viajó de regreso allí para estudiar nuevamente con él. Pronto, Martin estableció un monasterio llamado Liguge Abbey. Trabajó para evangelizar a la gente de los alrededores y trajo a muchas personas a la fe.

Cuando Tours necesitó un obispo en 371, se le pidió a Martín que asumiera el cargo. Pero él no quería ser obispo, así que se negó. Pronto fue engañado para que fuera ordenado obispo, e incluso trató de esconderse una vez que se dio cuenta de lo que estaba sucediendo. Pero fue ordenado y se convirtió en un obispo santo.

Durante su tiempo como obispo, estableció un sistema parroquial en su diócesis y visitaba cada parroquia con frecuencia. También combatió el paganismo y la herejía. Estableció otro monasterio en 372.

Martín murió en la Galia en 397.

San Martín de Tours, te encontraste con un mendigo pobre durante tus primeros años como soldado. Movido a piedad por el hombre, le diste la mitad de tu manto por amor a Dios.

¡Por favor trae mis peticiones ante Dios a quien amabas!

En un sueño esa noche, Jesús se te apareció como el mendigo. Has visto que tu acto de caridad había agradado mucho a Dios.

Ruega por mí, para que siempre pueda ser consciente de las necesidades de los menos afortunados que me rodean. Oren para que esté deseoso de ayudar a mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, por amor a Dios.

Novena a San Martín de Tours – Día 4

Querido Señor, te agradecemos por darnos a San Martín de Tours como ejemplo de santidad. Ayúdanos a imitar la virtud que mostró en el desapego de los bienes materiales que ejerció durante su vida.

San Martín de Tours, tu conciencia empezó a preocuparte por matar en la batalla cuando tenías veinte años. Decidiste rechazar tu paga y anunciar que no irías a la batalla, por amor a Dios.

¡Por favor continúe llevando mis peticiones ante el trono de Dios!

Más adelante en tu vida, elegiste vivir como ermitaño y monje. Elegiste voluntariamente vivir en la pobreza y luchar por las riquezas celestiales en lugar de las mundanas.

Orad por mí, para que pueda crecer en un espíritu de desapego de las cosas mundanas. Orad para que pueda crecer en el deseo de las verdaderas riquezas del Cielo.

Novena a San Martín de Tours – Día 5

Querido Señor, te agradecemos por darnos a San Martín de Tours como ejemplo de santidad. Ayúdanos a imitar el amor por Ti que mostró al elegir hacer lo correcto, sin importar el costo.

San Martín de Tours, comenzaste a sentir que estaba mal que mataras en la batalla, a medida que crecías en tu fe cristiana. A pesar de que enfrentaste el ridículo y perdiste tu paga, elegiste fielmente negarte a matar a otros, por amor a Dios.

¡Por favor, lleva mis peticiones ante Dios con tanta fidelidad!

Más adelante en su vida, nuevamente mostró gran fortaleza cuando predicó contra la herejía arriana. Sufrieron mucho a causa de esta predicación, pero nunca titubearon en proclamar la verdad.

Oren por mí, para que pueda tener la fuerza para hacer lo correcto, sin importar el costo. Ore para que nunca permita que los sufrimientos me impidan servir a Dios.

Novena a San Martín de Tours – Día 6

Querido Señor, te agradecemos por darnos a San Martín de Tours como ejemplo de santidad. Ayúdanos a imitar la devoción que mostró hacia Ti al predicar la verdad a los demás.

San Martín de Tours, te convertiste a la fe cristiana siendo niño. Durante tu edad adulta, tu devoción a Dios te llevó a predicar el Evangelio a tus padres ya convertir a tu madre a la fe.

¡Por favor, lleva mis peticiones ante Dios a quien serviste con tanta devoción!

A medida que los líderes de la herejía arriana ganaban terreno en la Iglesia, usted predicaba audazmente contra esta herejía e hizo todo lo que pudo para proclamar la verdad.

Oren por mí, para que nunca pierda la oportunidad de predicar el Evangelio a los demás. Oren para que nunca permita que la dificultad o el sufrimiento me impidan predicar las Buenas Nuevas.

Novena a San Martín de Tours – Día 7

Querido Señor, te agradecemos por darnos a San Martín de Tours como ejemplo de santidad. Ayúdanos a imitar el amor que mostró al elegir servirte como monje y obispo.

San Martín de Tours, empezaste a vivir como un ermitaño después de que te obligaran a huir por predicar contra la herejía arriana. Luego, regresaste a Tours y estableciste un monasterio para que otros pudieran servir a Dios en la vida monástica.

¡Por favor, lleva mis peticiones ante Dios a quien serviste de todo corazón!

Más tarde se le pidió que se convirtiera en obispo de Tours. Aunque no quería ser obispo, fue ordenado y sirvió como un obispo santo.

Oren por mí, para que pueda estar siempre abierto a la voluntad de Dios en mi vida. Ore para que siempre pueda buscar servir a Dios como Él me llama.

Querido Señor, te agradecemos por darnos a San Martín de Tours como ejemplo de santidad. Ayúdanos a imitar la devoción a Ti que mostró al vivir la vida monástica y al establecer monasterios.

San Martín de Tours, viviste como un ermitaño en una isla después de que los enojados líderes arrianos te obligaran a huir. Cuando regresaste de la isla, continuaste buscando servir a Dios con devoción.

Estableciste un monasterio llamado Linuge Abbey. Durante su tiempo como obispo, más tarde estableció otro monasterio para que otros pudieran servir a Dios a través del monacato.

Oren por mí, para que siempre busque servir a Dios de todo corazón en mi vida. Oren para que nunca me canse de buscar hacer la voluntad de Dios.

Novena a San Martín de Tours – Día 9

Querido Señor, te agradecemos por darnos a San Martín de Tours como ejemplo de santidad. Ayúdanos a imitar el amor por Ti que mostró en su vida de servicio a Tu Iglesia.

San Martín de Tours, usted comenzó a dedicar su vida más plenamente a la Iglesia después de ser relevado del servicio militar. Continuó sirviendo a Dios ya Su Iglesia por el resto de su vida.

Predicaste contra el arrianismo, viviste la vida monástica y estableciste monasterios. Más tarde, sirvió como un santo obispo, aunque se mostró reacio a asumir el cargo.

Oren por mí, para que pueda ser un siervo devoto de Dios y de Su Iglesia como lo fueron ustedes. Ore para que siempre esté ansioso por poner mis dones al servicio de Dios.
