”We were fortunate to have a sunny day, see lots of eagles, herons, kingfishers, cormorants, gulls and even a seal. All of the logistical details were beautifully arranged, from transportation, food, water and snacks, kayaks and gear. The leaders were experienced, professional, personable, and knowledgable about the natural history of the area. It was clear that they take pride in and enjoy leading these trips. They took pains to tailor the day to the participants interests and abilities. I would happily go on another trip with this company.”

”I’ve kayaked all over the world and never had an experience like this! Our guide Ben was personable and highly knowledgeable. We kayaked past several islands and stopped at one to take a beautiful hike to a lookout point. Ben walked barefoot in the forest as he pointed out everything you could eat and gave other interesting information about the flora and fauna. Bit of a forest guru too! Afterwards, we had a nice lunch and swim on the island and then kayaked back looking at the condors circle and dive and hear fun facts about Swedish culture and folklore. Great guidance, great equipment, great company!”

”I had done this amazing Sea Kayaking adventure with the Green Trails last year. I had so much fun it was the highlight of my Sweden trip! I went again this year and it was equally fun. Piotr my guide and owner of The Green Trails was extremely knowledgeable and I highly recommend it. Most people just go and see the same boring things and they miss out on true adventures and unique memories (and awesome work outs) this one had it all!”

”We had an absolutely brilliant day kayaking around the beautiful stockholm archipelago. My husband and daughters had kayaked before but it was my first time and our Guide Ben was really good and patient, so encouraging. This was a real highlight of our visit to this beautiful city and when we come back to Stockholm will definitely choose Green trails and hopefully Ben for our next outdoor adventure.”

Kayaking Gothenburg: what to see?

Environment:  We'll paddle around those polished, granite islands which have made the Stockholm archipelago famous. Created by the last ice age, they remind us of a giant who has scattered pebbles the size of cars over the Baltic Sea. We will also pass huge forest covered islands and high cliffs towering out from the water.

Wildlife: White tailed eagles are regularly spotted! Osprey as well. This area is also very rich in other bird life. Wild swans, geese, eider, loons, arctic terns, great cormorants, are all among regularly seen birds. We can also see grey seals.

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

The best boat trips and canal tours in Gothenburg

Sweden’s second largest city and Scandinavia’s biggest seaport, Gothenburg is an industrial city with water at its heart.

Gothenburg is city of waterways and canals that can be explored on a boat trip

This proud seafaring city has some historic old town areas, wide boulevards that are lined with grand neo-classical buildings, and a small network of moat-like canals.

It’s also the jumping-off point for exploring the Gothenburg archipelago , home to more than 20 beautiful, wooded islands where Göteborgare (Gothenburg residents) escape to at weekends during summer.

So, as you’d expect, taking to the water on a boat trip is an integral part of seeing Gothenburg and understanding its culture and history.

We’ve checked out the different types of boat tour available – from canal boats, to a hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour and ferries out to the farthest islands – and have picked our six favourite trips.

What kind of boat tours can you take in Gothenburg?

There are loads of different types of boat trips available in Gothenburg, including sightseeing tours, dinner cruises and even a private boat that picks you up from your hotel and takes you on a tailor-made guided tour of the city.

The Ocean Bus is an amphibious vehicle that tours the streets and waterways of Gothenburg

The fun Ocean Bus Gothenburg is an amphibious vehicle that takes you round the city on land and on water, while the hop-on hop-off boat is a great way to explore the city’s sights at your own pace.

Or, you can go further afield and explore some of the neighbouring islands on a Gothenburg archipelago tour.

When do boat trips run in Gothenburg?

Summer is definitely the best time to take a boat tour, both in terms of the weather and the fact that there is a greater variety of trips available.

The canals and waterways of Gothenburg are best explored on a boat trip

Some tours only run in the summer, such as the archipelago tour, while the hop-on hop-off boat tour  and the Vinga (see below) trip run from July to mid-August.

The Paddan boat tour (see below) runs from April to October (though not every day outside of summer), while the Ocean Bus runs at weekends only in low season.

Is the Gothenburg Pass worth buying?

Read this guide to see how much you could save during your trip!

How much do boat trips in Gothenburg cost?

Prices vary depending on the length of the trip and what’s included, though they’re not as expensive as you may think.

The one-hour Ocean Bus trip and the hop-on hop-off boats start from around $30 (approx 300 SEK) per person, while the seafood evening cruise and the private boat tour will set you back around £67 each.

The six best boat tours

We’ve picked out six of the best boat tours that you can do in Gothenburg and divided them into canal tours and trips out into the archipelago.

Canal tours

Here are our favourite ways to explore the canals and waterways of Gothenburg.

Take the famous ‘Toad’ tour!

Gothenburg’s classic canal tour is the “Paddan” tour, which takes you on a two-hour trip round the canals and waterways of Gothenburg.

The Paddan, or Toad tour, is a great way to explore the waterways of Gothenburg

“Paddan” means “the toad” in Swedish, and it’s so-called because the bottom of the boat looks like a toad when it’s upside down on land!

The open-top boat glides beneath 20 of the city’s bridges, including the famous Osthyveln (or “cheese grater”) bridge, which is so low that you’ll need to duck to get beneath it!

The tour ends up on the Säveån river, which is home to beavers and birdlife (though you’re honestly not going to see beavers on this trip).

Explore Gothenburg by road and water

This fun one-hour tour starts on land when the ten-tonne amphibious Ocean Bus takes you round the city’s sights, including the Stora Teatern, the Poseidon statue, Liseberg amusement park and the Fish Church (not a church all, but the city’s main fish market!).

The Bus then splashes into the water and becomes a boat to give you a different perspective on the city.

Spend the day discovering Gothenburg by boat

This hop-on hop-off boat tour takes in the sights and districts of the city including Brunnsparken, Lilla Bommen, Eriksberg and Haga. If you want to explore each district, just get off the boat and catch the next one!

The boats run every 45 minutes in high season, and the ticket is valid for 24 hours, so you’ve got all day to get to know the city.

Island tours

And here are some of our favourite fun trips round the Gothenburg archipelago.

Visit Vinga

The tiny island of Vinga is the furthest west of the Gothenburg archipelago islands, a pretty spot with a lighthouse that can easily be explored on foot.

Visit Vinga island on a boat trip from Gothenburg

The M/S Carl Michael Bellman takes you from Lilla Bommen in Gothenburg out through the harbour and to Vinga, where you’ll have an hour on land to explore, walk and maybe even have a swim!

Take a tour of the southern archipelago

If you want to see some more of the archipelago, this tour wends its way through the islands of the southern archipelago past Donsö before heading back to Gothenburg.

The boat doesn’t land, but gives you great views of the islands and coastline of the archipelago. You can buy snacks and drinks on board, or splash out on a sit-down lunch in the restaurant.

Sail in style on a shrimp and salmon cruise

Take a 3-hour evening cruise round the archipelago on this classic boat. Everything’s included, so you can sip your welcome drink and sup your seafood buffet while watching the sunset over the southern archipelago, to the sounds of a live band.

Not sure about taking a boat tour? You might also want to check out the Gothenburg attractions available with the Go City Pass (external link).

Top tips for taking a boat tour in Gothenburg

  • Book ahead. In summer the boat trips can get very busy – the “Paddan” tour in particular – so book well in advance, especially if you want a specific date.
  • Wear suitable clothing. This is Sweden and rain can come at any time, even in high summer. So bring waterproof clothing and lots of layers.
  • Buy a Gothenburg Pass. The “Paddan” tour, Vinga trip, archipelago cruise and hop-on hop-off boat are all included on the Go City Gothenburg Pass , so if you’re planning to do more than one (or even all!) the boat trips you’ll save a fortune by buying the pass. Check our guide to find out if the Gothenburg Pass is right for you.

Are any boat tours accessible for those with mobility issues or disabilities?

It depends on the individual boat. The more modern M/S Carl Michael Bellman (for the Vinga trip) is partially adapted for those with mobility issues, while the older M/S St Erik, which runs the seafood cruises and the archipelago tour, isn’t.

A hop-on hop-off boat tour is a great way to explore Gothenburg

Neither the Ocean Bus nor the “Paddan” boat are equipped for those with mobility issues, though the crew can help those who need extra support. Bear in mind that you need to be able to duck beneath a bridge on the “Paddan” trip.

Are the boat trips safe?

All the boats have lifejackets available, though you’re not usually obliged to wear them during the tours.

Always listen to the safety information that the crew announces at the beginning of the tour and make sure you’re aware of the safety procedures and where the emergency exits are.

Are the boat trips environmentally friendly?

Almost all of Gothenburg’s boat trips have a negative environmental impact on the waters in which they operate.

Many boat companies are however aiming to increase the fuel efficiency and electrification of their boats and decrease their CO2 emissions.

Local operator Stromma only serves sustainably caught seafood, for example, and is aiming to reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

Kayaking and canoe adventures in Sweden

Experience Sweden from the waterside in a kayak or canoe, gliding along mighty lakes, clean rivers and through Swedish archipelagos that spread across the idyllic coastlines and into the sea.

Few experiences are as peaceful as paddling in a kayak or canoe. Moving silently across the waters, you’re at one with nature. Aside from the sea surrounding it, Sweden has a vast number of lakes, rivers and archipelagos – often within easy reach of quaint towns and other urban environments. Set off with paddle in hand wherever you might be in the country – from Gothenburg on the west coast to Luleå in Swedish Lapland in the north.

There’s no end to the variety of adventures to embark on, either independently or as part of a guided tour, with or without accommodation. Often, you can also combine the excursions with indulging in local food and beverages. Discover the diversity on offer for kayakers and canoeists, beginners and experienced paddlers alike.

City kayaking

The Gothenburg archipelago on Sweden’s west coast is within easy reach of the city. Located north of Sweden’s second largest city, the magnificent Vättlefjäll nature reserve is one of the biggest recreational spaces in the region. Take in the beauty of its moorland and forestry as you paddle through a network of small, interconnected lakes. Keep an eye out for rare flora and fauna – black grouse and capercaillie are just two types of feathered species you might catch sight of. Canoes can be rented at Kanotpool Vättlefjäll .

Discover more of Gothenburg’s archipelago with the island of Vrångö as your base. Skim the cliffs at a peaceful pace or enter the open sea for a more adventurous outing. Kayaks are available to rent year-round at Kajkanten Vrångö , a hostel complex offering self-catering accommodation in converted boathouses.

Luleå is one of Swedish Lapland ’s main towns and a relaxing paddling trip can be easily incorporated into a city break. Kayaks are available to rent from the town centre’s southern harbour. A trip to the tiny island of Gråsjälören is a popular day-trip. From here, you’ll get to view the Luleå townscape from another perspective, enjoying the midnight sun during the summer months.

Archipelago canoeing

Gothenburg and bohuslän archipelago.

The Gothenburg archipelago’s islands offer a menu of natural wonders and unique flora and fauna. Combine a paddling trip with a visit to charming hamlets. Point 65 Kayak Center , located in Lilla Bommen harbour in the centre of Sweden’s second city, rents kayaks. The Gothenburg archipelago is divided into a northern and southern part. The southern section is car-free, making it particularly suitable for hikes if you fancy taking a break on land.

The Bohuslän archipelago and its numerous islands and islets start spreading a little north of Gothenburg and upwards along the west coast for about 280 km. Hotspots are Grebbestad and the Koster islands. At each of these seaside havens, you can rent kayaks and SUPs, or join guided tours. For culture enthusiasts, Kajaktiv offers an excursion involving a visit to the Nordic Watercolour Museum, followed by a cycle ride to view sculptures at ‘nature’s own art gallery’, Pilane.

The archipelago is a hit with adventure-seekers too – the more boisterous waters lend themselves well to sea kayaking, though there are calmer stretches as well. Take advantage of the abundant supply of freshly caught shellfish and the various forms of accommodation available right by the sea. Several places offer packages that include canoe and kayak rental, food and accommodation. Boutique B&B Lådfabriken and Vann Spa Hotell are two top choices.

Tjust, Västervik

The Tjust archipelago nestles at the fringes of the beautiful town of Västervik , in the north-eastern part of Småland . Rent a single or double kayak at Tjust Sport , which has a broad range to choose from. A vast number of islands and islets scatter this stretch of the Baltic Sea coastline. Many are peacefully secluded, while others are livelier, with a good mix of restaurants, cafés and accommodation options. Kayaking adventures can be combined with other activities, such as fishing and diving.

Lurö, Värmland

The Lurö archipelago is a natural wonderland in Lake Vänern – Sweden’s biggest lake – in the province of Värmland. Kayakers and canoeists are attracted by its scenery and wildlife – there are several bird sanctuaries across this large archipelago, comprising some 250 islands. There’s much to discover here. Take a break in one of the many bays and continue exploring on dry land along the walking trails found on the main island of Lurö itself. If you fancy staying the night, Lurö Gästhärbärge & Krog , offers accommodation as well as dining options.

Swedish Lapland – Luleå and Piteå archipelago

The Bothnian Bay, which incorporates the towns of Skellefteå, Piteå, Luleå, Kalix and Haparanda, forms part of the world’s northernmost brackish water archipelago. There are some 1,300 islands and islets to explore in the Luleå archipelago alone. Rent a kayak in the city’s south harbour and be on your way, choosing between easy and more challenging routes.

When exploring this unique environment, you’re likely to come across mushrooms, berries and various freshwater fish, as well as rare geological specimens, such as Haparanda monzonite rock. This is a peaceful escape, but if you’re looking for a restaurant or a cabin for an overnight stay, you’ll find several on the larger islands.

Piteå, located further south along the coast, offers an equally wide range of activities, allowing you to paddle off on your own or as part of a guided excursion. One such experience, Night Paddling, sets off from Renöhamn at night to make the most of the magical midnight sun. Animal lovers will enjoy the seal safari canoe tours. These are just two experiences offered by the eco-tourism company Guide Natura .

Long-distance paddling

Dalsland/nordmarken.

Dalsland-Nordmarken – or the DANO district as it’s also known – could have been made for long-distance canoe trips. This network of lakes stretches out in a maze-like manner to the province of Värmland, some 135 km to the north-east. You’ll be at one with vast forests and Swedish wildlife.

You can rent a canoe at Silverlake Camp for an independent excursion or opt for a three-day package, from Swedish Country Living . This newly introduced package combines outstanding nature with the enjoyment of sustainable food cooked using local ingredients. You’ll stay at the design-led Upperud 9:9 hotel , housed in a 100-year-old grain silo.

Klarälven, Värmland

The Klarälven river snakes through the county of Värmland in southwest Sweden. A paddler’s dream, this natural wonderland offers beautiful sandy beaches and small islands providing idyllic resting spots. Keep an eye out for beavers in the water at dusk – you may even hear them splashing with their paddle-like tails.

Nissan river and Ronneby river, Småland

There are several reasons why the Nissan River in Småland is such a draw for canoeists. Surrounded by magnificent terrain dominated by pine forest, this 86 km waterway has mostly calm waters with a few livelier stretches. You’ll find many picnic spots and places to stay along the river, including Isaberg Mountain Resort in Hestra, which serves as an ideal base as canoes and kayaks can be rented here.

The 110 km long Ronnebyån (Ronneby river) is another excellent paddling spot in Småland. From the charming village of Korrö you can set off on an adventure lasting for anything up to five days. Accommodation is available at Korrö, along with cafés and restaurants .

Lake Vänern

Vänern, the country’s largest lake, stretches across western Sweden and has a direct connection to the North Sea via Göta Canal, making it a long-distance canoe destination unlike any other. Studded with more than 22,000 islands – some of which form part of the Lurö archipelago – it offers everything from sandy beaches and rugged rocks to varied flora and fauna. A popular trip for experienced canoeists is the 10 km open water stretch from the island of Lurö to the equally enchanting national park of Djurö. Eco-tourism company Vänern Outdoor organises a range of experiences.

Swedish Lapland

Four of Sweden’s major rivers flow through the vast area of Swedish Lapland , making it a long-distance canoeist’s dream. The national rivers of Torne, Kalix, Pite and Vindel all allow you to paddle for miles, discovering magnificent, unspoilt scenery along the way. As these waterways cut through ravines en route to the Gulf of Bothnia, adventure-seekers are in for a treat as sections of these rivers make up some of Sweden’s wildest stretches of water.

Rafting in Swedish Lapland

Swedish Lapland is a haven of tranquillity but there’s drama too, thanks to the wild rapids on the Torne River. This beautiful waterway, which flows past the village of Kukkola on the Swedish/Finnish border, is a popular spot among rafting enthusiasts. Seasoned guides are on hand via tourist company Kukkolaforsen to teach you the art of rafting before you hit the water in multi-seat rubber boats. This particular trip takes about two hours, and the outing includes two exhilarating runs down the rapids.

The world-famous Icehotel also organises rafting adventures on the Torne river . This guided seven-hour outing will have you rafting through calm waters as well as rapids. Lunch, cooked over an open fire, followed by Swedish fika, is served on Puonojokk island.

Gothenburg travel guide

Gothenburg tourism | gothenburg guide, you're going to love gothenburg.

Gothenburg is relaxed, friendly and just a little eccentric. With its charming historical center, great design showrooms, engaging museums and easy-going attitude, it's a city that puts a smile on every visitor's face.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Gothenburg

1. the vibrant waterfront neighborhood.

Gothenburg is a proud maritime center and the waterfront is the city's hub. See the Maritime Museum, the historic ships in the Maritiman or board a ferry to the stunning Southern Archipelago.

2. Beautiful Historical Architecture

Gothenburg's Baroque core is stunning, with highlights including the Christinae Church and Kronhuset, but endless delights await those who wander around the center of town.

3. Family Attractions

Families will adore Gothenburg, with attractions like the huge Liseberg amusement park and the Universmuseum, which has a fantastic rainforest zone.

4. It's Heaven for Design Fans

The city is a hub of the Nordic design scene, with wonderful exhibits at the Röhsska Museum and tens of showrooms in areas like Nordstan.

5. There's Always a Festival Going On

Gothenburg loves to party, and guests are always welcome at events like August's Kulturkalaset and May's Hammarkullekarnevalen (Sweden's biggest carnival).

What to do in Gothenburg

1. feskekôrka: there's nothing fishy about gothenburg's foodie paradise.

Gothenburg's major market is all about showing off the gastronomic delights unloaded by the city's fishing fleet, and Feskekôrka is heaven for any seafood fans. The word "Feskekôrka" means "fish church", which gives you an idea of how seriously the people of Gothenburg take the fruits of the sea. Home to tons of fresh shellfish and fish sellers, and other food stalls, Feskekôrka has been the city's foodie hub since 1874. Resembling a church from the outside, inside the vaulting space is a hive of activity - from happily munching tourists to discerning local buyers.

2. Skansen Kronan: Unmissable Panoramic Views

For centuries, Skansen Kronan was Gothenburg's main land-based defense against invaders. These days, tourists are welcome to invade the fortress, which soars proudly above the harbor. Built in 1697, it wasn't actually ever called into action. However, the fortress's defenders must have enjoyed the wait for this peaceful time, as the views from the fortress are sublime. Take the stairs or an elevator to the viewing level and take snapshots of Gothenburg from its most appealing angle.

3. Göteborgs konstmuseum: Discover Sensational Swedes and International Masters

The city's Art Museum is located on elegant Götaplatsen, Gothenburg's cultural quarter. Inside, you'll discover a fabulously eclectic collection. Along with a peerless array of Nordic painters from the 19th and 20th centuries, the Konstmuseum houses Dutch and Flemish masters, Impressionists, American, and Romantic paintings. But it's the story of Gothenburg's own vibrant art scene that really enchants, with its quirky Colorists and unique take on Modernism. You're sure to discover new favorites and obscure works by artists you know.

4. Liseberg Amusement Park: Bursting with Family-Friendly Rides and Attractions

Gothenburg is always thought of as one of Scandinavia's most laid-back cities, and this attitude is captured wonderfully by Liseberg - a superb family amusement park. Located near the Universeum Science Museum (so you can mix education and pleasure), Liseberg is full of rides, from vertiginous descents of 42 meters or more, through to more leisurely roller coasters and Balder - a beautiful (and exhilarating) wooden coaster. There are plenty of attractions for younger children, while the Lustgård is a tranquil garden space for those who lack the stomach for an adrenaline rush.

5. Nya Älvsborg: Take a Boat Tour to Gothenburg's Formidable Fortification

If Skansen Kronan was the place locals fled to in times of trouble, Nya Älvsborg was the city's first line of defense. Situated on an island in the Gota River, this fortress was also vital for the whole of Sweden, protecting shipping as it made its way into the North Sea. Nowadays, you can take cruises across to the island to see the star-shaped bastion and watch costumed guides explain what life was like back in the 17th and 18th centuries. There's even a bakery and cafe on the island, and it's hard to find a more idyllic spot for a picnic.
