Nice to have everything planned out for you and really appreciated the flexibility of being able to move on to Rio a day earlier than planned - this made a huge impression on my view of gadventures. Cost is slightly higher than I would be able to justify to do this regularly - I usually book my own trips and could have covered this route for a lot less but felt happy to have the security of a tour group in this part of the world.

The number of optional trips was excessive and meant that we had to carry one $600 in cash to fund them. It would be a lot more 3 if the trips that everyone must always opt for (Iguazu Falls on Brazilian side, Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio) were included in the price; obviously this would make it more expensive but a lot better.

Luma was amazing. The trip was basic, but she made the trip
Top ?? Es gibt nichts tu beanstanden ?
Our guide Francisco really made this tour great! Optional activities could have been better; they were generally overpriced (jeep tour in paraty and boat tour in ilha grande especially). Accommodation was generally very good (went in low season) and transport was too. I feel like we ate out in restaurants too often meaning it cost a lot of money and we ate a lot more than we usually would. I know there aren't many alternatives especially for socialising but lunches could have been packed lunches/picnics more often.

Ilha Grande, Brazil: How to Get There, What to Do, Tours & Tips

Ilha Grande, one of the top ecotourism destinations in Brazil, is a stunning island home to an exuberant Atlantic Rainforest and enchanting beaches located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state.

This ‘Big Island’ with an area of 75 mi 2 , over 60% is a state park, is a popular weekend getaway for Brazilians and the ideal place to rest and relax surrounded by opulent nature after visiting the bustling Rio de Janeiro.

Featuring charming villages with unpaved streets, diverse fauna and flora, hiking trails, rivers, waterfalls, and pristine powdery sandy beaches dotted with luscious vegetation, Ilha Grande is undoubtedly one of Brazil’s best islands.

I love Ilha Grande and that’s why I decided to write this guide with everything you need to know to plan your trip, including the best beaches, what to do, tours, nightlife, where to stay and eat, how to get to Ilha Grande from Rio and many tips.

Everything You Need to Know to Plan a Trip to Ilha Grande

Where is ilha grande located.

Ilha Grande, an island in the municipality of Angra dos Reis, is located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, about 79 mi from the capital Rio and 280 mi from São Paulo (check the exact location on Google Maps ).

How to get to Ilha Grande from Rio?

The only way to get to Ilha Grande is by ferry, which departs from Mangaratiba, Conceição de Jacareí and Angra dos Reis.

To get from Rio to Ilha Grande, you can drive/take a bus to Mangaratiba from Rio’s bus terminal (Rodoviária Novo Rio) at 5h00. The bus arrives around 7h30 and you need to take the only ferry, which departs at 08h00, takes 1h50min and costs R$ 25 (US$ 5,00). If you’re on a budget this is the best option to get to Ilha Grande from Rio. Total journey: 05h

Another option is to drive/take a 2h bus ride to Conceição de Jacareí, which is a bit further, but there are boats nearly every hour from 08:00 to 18:00. Tickets cost R$ 75 (US$ 15) one way, R$ 140 (US$ 28) round trip, and it takes between 20 – 50min (depending on the vessel). Travel time: 03h

To get to Ilha Grande from Rio the best way is to book a transfer. There are private and shared transfers departing from the South Zone (Flamengo, Botafogo, Copacabana, Leblon, Centro, Santa Teresa, Lapa and Ipanema), as well as from Galeão International Airport-GIG or Santos Dumont Airport-SDU.

Travelling from Rio to Ilha Grande on a shared transfer you take the worry out of your way and avoid the hassle of public transport with heavy luggage. This is what I did, and it was much easier and more convenient.

P.S.: Angra dos Reis is even further from Rio and my recommendation is to only choose this option if you spend some days in this city. In this case, you can book this speed boat transfer from Angra do Reis to Ilha Grande .

The best time to visit

Ilha Grande’s tropical Atlantic beaches can be enjoyed for much of the year, although you may skip the rainier months of December – March. The temperature doesn’t vary much, hovering between 20°C – 30°C all year round.

The peak season is between the New Year’s and Carnival, and June, July, and August (winter in Brazil) are the driest months.

The best time to visit Ilha Grande is April, May, September and October, when there are fewer visitors, the prices are lower and the weather is very pleasant, with average temperatures between 20°C and 25°C.

Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

How many days do you need on Ilha Grande?

Four days. There are many things to do in Ilha Grande and if you stay less than four days you may leave feeling like you’re missing out.

You can take some tours to enjoy the most beautiful beaches on the island, explore the villages, go hiking, visit some waterfalls, rest, and relax.

Where to Stay

You can stay in three main villages in Ilha Grande: Vila do Abraão, Enseada de Araçatiba and Provetá.

Vila do Abraão, a small village with around 3.000 inhabitants, is by far the best option. It has a better location and infrastructure, including a health centre, and police and firefighter stations, apart from many bars, restaurants, hotels, and pousadas (guesthouses).

You can also find budget guesthouses and camping on some beaches, such as Aventureiro and Praia Vermelha, which are perfect for backpackers and those who prefer to stay in more isolated areas.

If you’re looking for a place to stay on Ilha Grande, my recommendations are:

  • Budget: Hostel Refúgio , Lila Limão Hostel and Raio de Sol Pousada e Camping
  • Mid-range: Casa Bonita , Pousada Albatroz and Pousada Horizonte do Borbas .
  • Luxury: Asalem , Bonito Paraíso and Pousada Naturalia .

Where to eat

Some of my favourite restaurants on Iha Grande are: Canoas (good food and price), Don Mario (great portion sizes and excellent price), Lua e Mar (excellent food and high price), and Garoupas (great cost-benefit).

Canoas Restaurant, Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

How to get around

Ilha Grande is a car-free island. There are no longer roads and motorised vehicles are banned.

The only ways to get around Ilha Grande are on foot (there is more than 93 mi of hiking trails connecting the coastal villages, beaches and hamlets) or by boat.

Is it worth visiting Ilha Grande?

Visiting Ilha Grande is totally worthwhile. The gorgeous island covered with tropical rainforest has some of the best beaches in Brazil and a laid-back atmosphere.

It’s also close to Rio de Janeiro making it a perfect island escape when visiting the so-called Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvellous City).

What to pack

I don’t recommend taking a big piece of luggage with you to Ilha Grande. It will take too much space in the van and boat, most of Ilha Grande’s streets are unpaved and you’ll be dragging your luggage from the pier to your hotel on the sandy streets. Leave it at your hotel in Rio or find a LuggageHero partner here .

Instead, pack a backpack with beach shorts, T-shirts, swimming suits, flip-flops, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and mosquito repellent .

Do I need cash on Ilha Grande?

Even though credit cards are widely accepted on the island, it’s recommended to bring some cash with you as there aren’t ATMs or banks on Ilha Grande.

If you need a place to store your luggage before your check-in and after your check-out, you can use our partner, LuggageHero. We offer a 1-hour discount (for one bag) to all of our guests. Click on this link to book your luggage storage .

Best Things to Do on Ilha Grande, Brazil

1 – explore the villages.

Whether you’re staying in Vila do Abraão, Provetá, or Enseada de Araçatiba or just visiting another village, such as Dois Rios, you should put some time aside to wander around its sandy streets.

You can visit churches, and museums, stumble upon the remains of old civilizations, prison ruins, cute cafes, and restaurants. Not to mention getting a better sense of the locals’ way of living.

2 – Enjoy the breathtaking beaches

Of course, one of the best things to do on Ilha Grande is to enjoy its gorgeous beaches!

No matter you decide to relax on the beaches near the villages, take a tour to visit Ilha Grande’s best beaches or hike to spend the day on a more isolated and quieter piece of paradise on Earth, one thing is certain, you will be enchanted by the beauty of the island’s beaches.

Some of the best beaches on Ilha Grande that you should not miss are: Lopes Mendes, Aventureiro, Jurubaíba (Dentista) and Ilha de Cataguases.

3 – Take a boat tour

A trip to Ilha Grande cannot be complete without taking at least one of these tours:

Around the Island

This is the most popular tour and takes you to Praia de Cachadaço, Parnaioca, Aventureiro, Meros and Japariz. The speed boat departs at 09h30, makes a lap around the island covering a total of 61 mi, and finishes at 17h30. From R$ 220 (US$ 45).

Mero Beach, Ilha Grande, Brazil

Paradisiacal Islands

Another popular tour on the island takes you to visit some of the most beautiful islands around Ilha Grande, including Ilhas Botinas, Ilha do Dentista, Piedade and Cataguases. From R$ 180 (US$ 36).

Aerial view over Ilha do Dentista, Ilha Grande, Brazil

Green and Blue Lagoons

An easy and smooth ride to experience the natural wonders of these crystal-clear water lagoons, which are the habitats of colourful fishes, sea turtles and dolphins. The tour starts at 10h30 and finishes at 16h30. From R$ 150 (US$ 30).

Lopes Mendes

From Vila do Abraão there are two different tours to Lopes Mendes: with a schooner (R$ 50 – US$ 10), which carries more people and takes longer, and with a taxi boat (R$ 80 – US$ 16), which is much faster. Both options will drop you off at the beautiful Praia do Pouso, and from there, you need to do a 25-minute hike to get to Lopes Mendes.

You’ll discover the natural splendour of Lopes Mendes at your own pace and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Ilha Grande’s most captivating beach.

After exploring the crystal-clear waters, pristine sands, and lush surroundings, you’ll return to Vila do Abraão either at 15h30 or 17h30.

Aerial view over Lopes Mendes Beach, Ilha Grande, Brazil

Taking a boat tour is one of the best things to do in Ilha Grande and if you’re visiting the island during the high season, I highly recommend booking in advance. The tours are in general cheaper from April to November.

  • Have you heard about Itacaré ? It’s one of the best beach towns in Brazil

4 – Uncover Ilha Grande’s ruins

Ilha Grande has a fascinating history! The island was occupied by Portuguese, French, Dutch, Spanish and English explorers, received a large number of slaves during the colonial time, and housed two prisons.

During your visit, you can see the ruins of Lazareto, a farmhouse that in 1884 was redesigned as a quarantine stopover for European immigrants and worked as a federal prison from 1940 to 1954.

If unveiling Lazareto and Prison ruins sounds a bit bizarre to you, check out the ruins of the aqueduct. Built with stones and whale oil in 1893, the aqueduct carried water from Abraão Stream headwater to the Lazareto. It’s 15 high and 125m long with dozens of picturesque arches.

Seeing these remains is one of the most unusual things to do on Ilha Grande and I was so surprised. Both places are within walking distance from Vila do Abraão and if you prefer to go with a guide, I suggest this Private Historic Walking Tour .

A man crossing the arches of the Aqueduct ruins, Ilha Grande, Brazil

5 – Go hiking

Whether you’re a hiker or an occasional stroller, there’s a vast number of mapped trails on Ilha Grande to choose from and it’ll be easy to find some that suit you.

The island has more than 93 mi of hiking trails connecting the coastal villages, beaches, and hamlets.

Some of the most popular Ilha Grande hikes are: T01 – Abraão Loop (4 km), T13 Abraão – Pico de Papagaio , the second highest peak on the island and the best place to watch the sunrise (6 km each way), and T10 – Abraão to Lopes Mendes Beach (6.9 km each way).

Hike through the rainforest is one the best adventurous things to do on Ilha Grande and a great opportunity to unleash the Indiana Jones in you.

6 – Cool down on a waterfall

If you want to cool down in the refreshing waters of a waterfall during your trip, you might be pleased to hear that you can visit some waterfalls on Ilha Grande, such as Cachoeira da Feiticeira, Cachoeira do Bicão, and Cachoeira Mãe D’água.

Cachoeira da Feiticeira is the most famous and easiest accessible one. To reach the 15m-high waterfall, you can hike from Vila do Abraão, around 1h30min, or take a taxi boat to Praia da Feiticeira and walk 30min instead.

The moderate and well-marked trail is full of ups and downs through the lush beauty of the Atlantic Forest. You can hike by yourself, but if you prefer you can book this private guided hike to Feiticeira Waterfall and four beaches .

7 – Go partying

If you want to enjoy Ilha Grande’s nightlife, the only place where you can shake your booty is Vila do Abraão.

Here you can find scenic waterfront restaurants with lovely lightning that are perfect to sip a caipirinha with your other half, bars with live music that attract many tourists and locals alike, and parties with DJs to dance the night away with your friends.

Che Lagarto and Aquario, two waterfront hostels situated 15 minutes from the centre of the island, are the hottest nightlife spots on Ilha Grande. They host awesome parties with DJs every night during the high season.

Other places worth checking out are Biergarten Hostel Bar, which offers live music, and Praia da Julia.

8 – Eat plenty of “Comida Brasileira”

Brazil is a country with a diverse cuisine with African, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese and Indigenous influences, that vary greatly from region to region and go beyond the traditional beans & rice.

There are plenty of delicious dishes to awaken your senses and satisfy your palate during your trip, such as moqueca, feijoada, and tapioca.

Not to mention the tropical and exotic fruits, like açai, graviola, acerola… hmmm. Mouthwatering!

9 – Try some cachaça

Are you familiar with cachaça? The “Brazilian rum” made from sugar cane? Cachaça is widely used in Brazil to make the country’s most popular drink, caipirinha.

If you haven’t tried it yet, while on Ilha Grande you can try out different types of cachaças.

Cachaçaria da Vila produces craft and organic exquisite cachaças and liqueurs that’ll awaken your taste buds. Some of the flavours available include passion fruit, cocoa, soursop, pineapple with coconut, and clove with cinnamon.

10 – Go souvenir shopping

Vila do Abraão is full of bars, restaurants, and shops. And if you want to take home a souvenir from this piece of paradise, you will find many options.

You can buy some clothing for yourself or as a gift, beach accessories such as hats and sunglasses, handmade bags, flip flops, art crafts, etc.

My favourite store on the island is Tupã , which sells extraordinary products hand-crafted by several indigenous groups.

This is my Ilha Grande travel guide, and I hope this post will help you to plan your trip.

After your visit, you will understand why it’s one of my favourite islands in Brazil.

The Complete Guide to Ilha Grande

' src=

READY TO GO TO ILHA GRANDE RIO DE JANEIRO?

Ilha Grande – which literally translates to Big Island – is a tropical island just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state and is about 160 kilometers from Copacabana.

It is an island defined by its white beaches and clear blue waters. It is also a car-free zone . In short, it is a slice of Brazilian paradise and is ideal for a weekend getaway from Rio de Janeiro. It can be done in a day, but you will be pushed for time if you want to do everything.

ilha grande tour

Don’t have time to read the whole article?

If you want to visit Ilha Grande but are short on time, then I recommend booking this Full Day Tour to Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande tour , with a (near) perfect ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating.

I stayed for one night and two days, and that was ok – but I think one more night would have been perfect. But the time I spent there was wonderful, and I managed to pack in plenty of great activities and see some unforgettable sights. Here is my complete guide to Ilha Grande Rio de Janeiro.

Ilha Grande Rio de Janeiro

How to get there.

ilha grande tour

So, how to get to Ilha Grande? The easiest way of getting there is a bus from Rio de Janeiro and then the ferry over to the island. There are several routes, so here are all your options.

First of all, the main port on Ilha Grande is Vila do Abraão, so that’s where you’ll be heading. To get there, you have to take a boat from either Mangaratiba (which is closest to Rio), Conceição de Jacareí (the closest point to Ilha Grande Brazil and with the most boat departures), or Angra dos Reis (which is the closest to São Paulo). I took the one from Conceição de Jacareí as it has plenty of boat departures at all hours, so we didn’t need to wait long to board.

Getting a boat from Mangaratiba

This trip will take between 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes to reach the island. They depart just once a day at 8 am except on Fridays when there is one extra departure at 10 pm.

The boats are huge, with a capacity of between 500 and 1,000 people, and visitors can take up to 10 bikes with them (why you would need so many bikes, I’m not sure!) free of charge. The boat back to Mangaratiba from Abraão leaves once a day at 5.30 pm. The cost of a ticket is R$16.60.

Getting a boat from Angra dos Reis

ilha grande tour

🏷️ The price for a one-way ticket is R$70 (USD$14).

will take between 1 hour and 10 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the island. Like Mangaratiba, they depart just once a day at 3.30 pm on Mondays to Fridays and at 1.30 pm on weekends and holidays.

The boats that leave Ilha Grande Angra dos Reis are big, with a capacity of between 500 and 1,000 passengers, and they have the same rules about bikes as the boats that leave from Mangaratiba. The boat back to Angra dos Reis from Abraão leaves once a day at 10 am. The cost of a ticket is R$20 (USD$5).

Unlike Mangaratiba, Angra dos Reis also has smaller and fastest schooners available, which run on a much more frequent timetable. The journey to the island takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes, and the boats have a capacity of between 30 to 120 people . They run every day at every hour from 7 am to 6 pm and go to Abraão. To go back from Abraão to Angra dos Reis, the boats run every day for nearly every hour from 6:30 am to 6 pm.

Getting the boat from Conceição de Jacareí

🏷️ The price for a one-way ticket is R$50 (USD$10).

This is my favorite choice as it’s quicker and much more convenient. The trip to the island takes between 15 and 20 minutes (which basically means more beach time on the island!), and the boats have a capacity of between 30 and 60 passengers.

They run regularly between 8:30 am and 6:15 pm (with an extra trip at 9 pm on a Friday) to go to the island and run between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm (with an extra trip at 8 pm on Friday) to back to Conceição de Jacareí.

You can get your tickets from the port, so no worries about booking in advance. To get more information about the exact timetable,   take a look here .

How do I get to Mangaratiba/Conceição/Angra?

ilha grande tour

The easiest way is to take a bus from the Rodoviaria in Rio de Janeiro. Take the comfy Costa Verde bus (you can either  book it in advance   or simply book it at the Rodoviaria before you board. That’s what I did), which costs around R$50 (USD$10) to Mangaratiba and around R$70 (USD$14) to Conceição and Angra. You can also book a shared transfer from Rio de Janeiro ( like this one ).

There are plenty of guided tours that offer a full package – hotel pickup, bus there, and boat trip over. Like this Angra & Ilha Grande Private Boat Tour: With Barbecue and Drinks and Day Trip to Angra dos Reis from Rio de Janeiro . However, most tours start from Ilha Grande, so you’ll have to make your way to the island before booking a tour.

5 Tips for the Island

Once you get to Ilha Grande, here are a couple of tips that you should consider to make the best out of your islands adventure:

1. Take cash

There are no cash points on the island , and not every restaurant, shop, or bar accept card yet. So you may need to pay in cash. I think it is improving now as the flow of tourists is always increasing year by year, but I remember being grateful that I had taken out cash beforehand – normally, I pay for everything by card, so I was lucky to have some fortunate hindsight!

2. There are no cars on the island

There are no roads on the island. It is a motor-free zone, which is one of the many charms of Ilha Grande. Yet this is something worth remembering if you’re carrying heavy luggage – you may consider renting out one of those push carts when you arrive to help you take your back to your accommodation.

3. Pack Smart

There are plenty of hikes on the island, some with challenging climbs, others simply flat trails leading through the forest. Take good shoes – trainers are absolutely fine – and remember to set off each day with plenty of water! The tropical weather can be fierce, and you should always try to stay hydrated. Make sure to also bring sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen ” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener nofollow”>sunscreen.

Another thing that you should bring is mosquito repellent . Although you can buy repellent at some shops, it’s best to come prepared. The worst time is during the evenings.

4. Book Accommodation in Advance

It’s usually easy to find a hotel or hostel when you get to Ilha Grande, but it gets a bit trickier during the busy summer season and long weekends. The island is mostly untouched and hasn’t seen a lot of big building projects. While that’s great for keeping the island’s natural beauty, it means there are not a lot of places to stay.

So, if you’re planning to visit in the summer or on a holiday weekend , it’s a good idea to book your accommodation in advance. This way, you won’t have to worry about trying to find a room when there aren’t many left.

5. Go Hiking

ilha grande tour

You can walk all the way around the island! Yet it’s not called Big Island for nothing, you know; it can take between 4 and 5 days to make it all the way around. If you have your heart set on doing it, though, it’s best to start at Abraão and walk in an anti-clockwise direction.

💡 Note: at the other end of the island, accommodation is quite scarce, so you will need to plan this before (that or find a friendly local who doesn’t mind providing a bed for the night!). Camping is not permitted outside the designated places in an attempt to protect the island’s environment, so take care to follow these rules.

6. Book A Boat Tour

Beaches In Ilha Grande

ilha grande tour

Ilha Grande does beaches splendidly. One of the best ones is  Lopes Mendes , with its long, white sandy beach, crystal clear shallow waters, and a fringe of tropical palm trees. It is the definition of paradise.

The water is good for surfing , although you have to paddle quite far out as the water remains shallow for a while. To get there, take a speedboat from Abraão to Pouso and try to do this on a calm day – when I did it, the waves were big, and I was convinced that I was going to be catapulted out of the boat!

From Pouso, it’s a pleasant 20-minute hike through the forest before arriving at the Lopes Mendes beach. Provisions are in short supply there, although you can buy water, beers, caipirinhas, and basic snacks there. It’s a good idea to bring some of your own snacks with you too.

Arguably the best Ilha Grande beach is  Parnaioca Beach,  yet it is much less visited. Why? It can only be accessed either by boat or a 3-hour hike from the Dois Rios near Abraão. It’s worth it, though – few people make the effort to go there, so you’ll be rewarded with a secluded beach with very little crowds.

Other great beaches worth checking out include  Aventureiro Beach  (look out for the famous L-shaped palm tree there),  Santo Antonio Beach  (a tiny beach with turquoise waters), and  Caxadaço Beach  (another tiny beach surrounded by dense forest).

Other things to do in Ilha Grande

ilha grande tour

If you want to take a break from all the beaches, there are a couple of other things that you can do in Ilha Grande.

Visit the  abandoned Candido Mendes prison .

This prison was once used to lock up some of Brazil’s most dangerous criminals until it was closed in 1994. It includes stories of escapes, such as when Escadinho, a Brazilian drug lord, was broken out with a helicopter. It can be reached by following the trail from the Vila de Dois Rios.

Go Scuba diving (Or Snorkelling)

Ilha Grande is great for dive lovers, and there are several schools to rent equipment from. Expect to see tropical fish, coral reefs, and even the occasional turtle. I didn’t dive there, but I’ve heard that some of the best spots are Ilha de Jorge Grego, the island in front of Lopes Mendes beach, Gruta do Acaia, and Ilha das Palmas.

However, I did go snorkeling, and I would highly recommend Lagoa Azul in the far north of Ilha Grande or Lagoa Verde. The water is so blue with amazing visibility, and I saw plenty of colorful shoals of fish.

Hike  Pico de Papagaio

Standing at 980 meters tall, this is the second largest peak on the island and takes about two to three hours to reach the top. It’s a challenging trek, but the views over the entire island are worth it.

Don’t want to hike Pico de Papagai yourself, then book this Ilha Grande: Pico do Papagaio – Private Hike – Sunrise or Daytime . You’ll summit the mountain by dawn and watch a beautiful sunrise over Ilha Grande.

Visit the waterfall

The  Cachoeira de Feiticeira waterfall  is not far from the main port, Abraão. The waterfall stands at 15 meters high, and you can take a shower under it (you will love that during the summertime!) and swim in the pool in front.

Places to eat and drink

Being an island surrounded by marine-rich waters, it’s hardly surprising that Ilha Grande does amazing seafood. For a fancy seafront dinner, head to  O Pescador , which does Mediterranean-style fish dishes as well as great pasta and meat dinner options.

The fish fillet with passion-fruit sauce is wonderful at  Dom Mario , a seafood restaurant in Abraão. Another great seafood restaurant is  Restaurante Lua e Mar . With its candlelit tables edging out onto the sand, it’s the perfect spot for a romantic date night.

Where to stay

ilha grande tour

When I went, I literally left everything last minute and arrived on the first day of a national holiday. Needless to say, on this beautifully sunny weekend, half of Rio’s population and I had decided to come and spend some time at Ilha Grande.

I arrived without any accommodation and everywhere was completely booked. After trekking around, we actually ended up chatting to a friendly local who let us stay there for a discounted price. It was pure luck. However, it’s best to book in advance , especially when traveling there on a weekend or during a holiday.

Here are some of the most popular spots and Ilha Grande hotels on the island:

➤ Pousada Tagomago is an eco-lodge located only 197 feet from Abraao Beach. It offers 6 exclusive suites with scenic ocean views. Wi-Fi is free.➥ Check here for prices and availability.

➤ Asalem  is a more luxurious place to stay, but it’s secluded location and forest surroundings are charming, and the attention to detail is impeccable. The hotel overlooks the Crena beach, and guests may find themselves in close proximity to wildlife such as monkeys, hummingbirds, and brightly-colored butterflies. The sea nearby is known to have starfish and turtles. The 6 water-front suites give Asalem an exclusive feel. ➥ Check here for prices and availability.

➤ Pousada Bela Vista , located just steps from Abraao Beach in Abraão, offers city views, a garden, and a terrace. This property features free WiFi throughout, room service, and a tour desk. Additionally, a shuttle service can be arranged by the on-site staff. ➥ Check here for prices and availability.

➤ Che Lagarto  is a famous chain of hostels throughout South America, and this one is a popular spot for backpackers. It’s a great place to meet people and is nicely located right next to the beach. ➥ Check here for prices and availability.

12 Wonderful Things to Do in Ilha Grande (+ Full Guide)

You chose Brazil to be your next adventure and already feeling curious about what to do on Ilha Grande? Great! Brazil is a fascinating country and a very exciting cultural destination with attractions to satisfy just about any taste. Whether you are looking for a jungle exploration, world art museums, pulsating rhythm of the carnival, or idyllic beach time, this fantastic country has it all.

One place that you should for sure include on your list when visiting Brazil is Ilha Grande island, one of the greatest Brazil’s highlights !

You may think that spending your time on an island might be boring and that it would limit your desire for an adventure, but you are wrong!

Ilha Grande means “the Big Island”. It certainly is big in its diversity of things to do and see. This pure tropical retreat is located between Rio de Janeiro and Paraty, a colonial city with great pirate history. Because of the pirates precisely, there was never larger development on the island. That helped preserve its tropical beauty, and that made it a great place for you to visit.

Once you get there, this tropical paradise will give you the best it has to offer. Amazing sand beaches, crystal clear waters, exciting forest trails, wildlife, numerous activities, great, authentic gastronomical offer, Ilha Grande will give you all of that.

As a good overture to your own exploration of this amazing place, here is our recommendation on the top 12 things you need to do while on Ilha Grande.

Explore Lopes Mendes beach

One of the first things you will notice on Ilha Grande is the lack of huge intrusive development and construction. That is what makes it so charming. And that is what helped preserve its beautiful coastline.

The end result is that Ilha Grande today is the proud owner of the majority of Brazil’s top beaches. Among many others, the island is home to Lopes Mendes, one beach that is always at the top of the list of the best Brazilian beaches.

things to do in ilha grande: beaches

Once you are there, you will see for yourself this title is very well deserved. It is a pure delight of 3 km of white sand embraced by green crystal water. You will love this beach especially if you are searching for a quiet spot to rest. There is no human interference here; no bars, restaurants, nothing. Just you, nature and silence.

How to Get to Lopes Mendes Beach

Reaching Lopes Mendes beach is relatively easy, yet, it will require some hike.

If you are in Vila do Abraão, you need to hike for about 4 hours to reach the beach. It is not very difficult and crossing the jungle is so exciting as you could see some wildlife.

If you are in Praia do Pouso, you can hike to Lopes Mendes for about 20 minutes to reach the beach. Just take the T11 trail .

If you don’t have too much desire to hike, we can recommend you take  a shuttle from Vila to Abraão Port.

Visit the abandoned Candido Mendes prison

Ilha Grande has a dark secret to tell; it has its own Alcatraz!

The island is home to an abandoned maximum security prison, The Candido Mendes. It used to house hundreds of the Brazilians most dangerous and notorious criminals. One of the great stories includes the one known as Escadinha, about the drug king who managed to escape the prison.

When it was closed back in 1962, all inmates were relocated to other prisons in the country. One of them , however, after he was released, continued to live inside the remains of the prison.

ilha grande tour

If you wish to reach this dark pearl of the island, you will have to hike. It is not easy, but you will be rewarded with magnificent views on your way up. We recommend you to start from Abraão using the T9 trail at Julia beach , leading to the almost deserted village of Dois Rios.

How to Get to Candido Mendes prison

The trail is about 8.3 kilometers one way and it will take you about two hours in one direction. The first part of the trail is on a muddy path through the jungle, but do not let it discourage you.

In the end, you will see how rewarding this hike is. One of the highlights of this trail you also need to see is Piscina dos Soldados; a small pool in which soldiers used to bathe before going to the prison.

Go diving in the marine-rich waters

Ilha Grande does not stand alone. The island is surrounded by many small uninhabited islets, making it perfect for diving. If you are a diver yourself, you will find your little paradise here. You may explore its local rich marine life and admire the beauty of this amazing underwater world.

Go for a treasure hunt too; there are dozens of old shipwrecks; ships that were sunk hundred years ago as a result of battles between pirates and colonial forces.

The Best Spots for Diving near Ilha Grande

The island is just full of great diving spots. Some of the best-known you should try are Gruta do Acaia, Ilha das Palmas and Ilha de Jorge Grego, the island in front of Lopes Mendes beach. Numerous diving centers on the island will offer you not only the rental of the equipment at decent prices but will give you practical advice too.

Wild and nature untouched by human hands, clear waters, and a very rich underwater life will leave you breathless for sure. Having your underwater camera handy is recommended, you will want to capture these stunning moments.

ilha grande tour

The best way to reach these tiny, diving oases is by taking one of the boat tours from the main hub of Ilha Grande, Vila do Abraão. The prices are affordable, starting from as little as 23 dollars and up, depending on your preferences and wishes.

Eat delicious seafood

Sometimes, the best memories of a place we have visited are linked to the food we tried. You are now on a tropical island and there should be no doubts at all about what to eat. The smells around you will tell you what to eat.

The best the island offers is the seafood, of course. Even if you are not too keen on it, certainly give yourself a try. Ilha Grande is known for excellent dishes made of freshly cut oysters, fish delicacies, and different seafood casseroles. Typical Brazilian tastes are so specific that it is hard to describe them; you should try it for yourself.

Yet, we can recommend to you just a few meals that are just pure Brazilian. The  local shrimp in cheese sauce served with rice and potatoes is certainly one of the must-tries.

Acarajé might be a good choice too; it is a black-eyed bean pattie deep fried and served steam-hot. It usually has prawns inside and if you like hot stuff, can be served with chili oil.

ilha grande tour

Farofa is a good choice if you decide to avoid seafood and still try something unique to Brazil. Its taste and significance are hard to understand without trying it. It is basically fried tapioca flour mixed with small pieces of fried bacon, usually served with tasty rice and beans.

ilha grande tour

Some of the best restaurants on the island are located in Abraão. They offer a great variety of local both traditional and modern meals. We are sure that you will find that special one for yourself.

Go snorkeling at Lagoa Azul

Snorkeling lovers among you will have to head to the very north of the island to find their own paradise. That is where the Lagoa Azul is located, one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Here you will have a chance to meet face to face with the numerous colorful fish species that you can even hand feed.

Coral reefs and sea turtles will be your companions in this amazing underwater world. And that is not all! From here you will have the most beautiful view of Rio de Janeiro from the water.

It is recommended to bring your own snorkeling equipment. If the snorkeling turns out to be the last-minute adventure you desired, the equipment can be rented on board the schooner for about $10.

ilha grande tour

After a great day in this amazingly blue water, you will need a break. We recommend you try the boat restaurant there, known not only for great seafood but also for a homemade caipirinha!

One of the best and easiest ways to reach Lagoa Azil is by taking a shuttle from Abraao.

Walk to Cachoeira da Feiticeira Waterfall

One thing you should certainly not miss while on the island is an amazing Cachoeira da Feiticeira Waterfall .

This beautiful 15-meter high waterfall is located near the port of Abraao. It is surrounded by a tropical forest. Once you reach it, you may try taking a shower under its cascades or even taking a swim in the pool in front.

You will have to agree that this is probably the most scenic hiking trail on the island. Not only that you will be embraced by the green beauty along the way, but will be able to see several sights too.

The first one will be the stop at the Poção and Aqueduto (Aqueduct). You can finish the hike at the bea utiful and untouched, white sand Feiticeira beach.

things to do in ilha grande: waterfalls

How to Get to Cachoeira da Feiticeira Waterfall

This relatively easy hike to the waterfall you can start from the main port of Abraão. Go to the north end of the village and use trail T01. We recommend you to take the same way back, but if you do not feel like walking, there is a taxi boat available from Feiticeira beach.

Enjoy a Hike to Vila Dois Rios and Dois Rios Beach

If you are looking for a long yet relaxing hike on the island, then we recommend you to try a hike to Dois Rios Beach. This hike is just perfect for both nature and history lovers among you.

You may start at the main hub of the island, Abraoo. Do not let the length of it scare you. The track is about 16 km long, leading to the village of Villa de Dois Rios, or The Two Rivers.

You will find the hike relatively easy and flat most of the way. This long route will also reward you with calm forest trails and after all, this amazing wild beach. A beach that is according to many, the most beautiful one on Iha Grande. If you want to see what a place unspoiled by tourism looks like, then this is the perfect island hike for you.

ilha grande tour

Once you are there you will enjoy a bit of the spooky atmosphere of the village with its abandoned houses. Still, it has a few more things worth seeing. You may try the Ecomuseum or Museum do Carcere, dedicated to the local, abandoned Candido Mendes prison and its numerous stories.

Hike to the top of Pico do Papagaio

The real hiking lovers among you will be thrilled with this hike bite. You do not have to be a professional to conquer this one, but in a good fit and prepared for a long and quite difficult hike, that is for sure.

Pico do Papagaio , on its 980 m above sea level, is the second-highest peak on the island. The hike up to the top will take you approximately three hours. It is very challenging and very difficult at some point.

However, this effort will not leave unawarded!  The views from the top are sensational and you will be able to see the entire island. We would not recommend you taking this hike at night. Due to its challenging nature, keep in mind that it’s best to do it in a group, and even better to take the local guide with you.

ilha grande tour

How to Get to Pico do Papagaio Trail

This trail is easily accessed from the main village on Ilha Grande, Abraao. Follow the main road, Estr. Dois Rios, which runs across the island from Abraao to the village of Dois Rios. After about 15 minutes, on your right-hand side, you will see the signpost of the trail T13 entrance.

Spot local wildlife

The spectacular landscape of Ilha Grande has yet another special feature, its wildlife. The island is still home to one of just a few left pristine Atlantic rainforests in Brazil.

This is one of the richest ecosystems in the world, and a hot spot for true biodiversity. Maybe you will be able to interface some of the marmosets, armadillos, or sloths, maybe not. Doesn’t matter, just walking through the rainforest will be a unique “once in a lifetime” experience.

ilha grande tour

In every deepest hole of the forest, there is a life, a life of an animal or a plant. That special smell of this green kingdom will follow you everywhere. And you will see something truly incredible wherever you turn your head.

The best time to visit this amazing place is the peak of the season; January, June, and July. If you decide to go during the low season, it is not a bad choice either. There will be fewer crowds, but more wildlife and still great weather for you to enjoy.

Hike and Spend a night at Praia do Aventureiro

Aventureiro means “adventurer”, and that is what you will become on this hike. Somewhat different combination than other, yet very much rewarding. Aventureiro is a protected area. Long unspoiled beaches, huge boulders, lush jungle, and thousands of seabirds will just show you why.

Once you get there, you will see the magnificent beach facing the open ocean. The waves here get quite high and the currents and winds are strong too, making it ideal for windsurfing. There are a few accommodation possibilities available, but we recommend you camping. If for nothing else, then to be able to see the amazing Aventureiro sunrise.

ilha grande tour

Hot to Get to Praia do Aventureiro

The best way is to start at Proveta, the starting point for your new hikes which are not accessible from Abraao. To Proveta you can get by shuttle from Angra dos Reis. To start your hike, You can use the T9 trail .  It is about 3,5 km one way and quite difficult. There is a 350 m ascend from the beach with the subsequent descent to another beach. Still, despite the difficulty, you will be rewarded with amazing views up and down.

If you are in Vila do Abraão, the hike gets longer. It will take you about 8 hours to reach the hidden beach. Think about doing it for at least 2 days so that it becomes worth it.

Visit Secluded Beaches on a Boat Tour

Ilha Grande is a specific island surrounded by numerous other small islands and islets. Each one of them hides dozens of wild and untouched beaches. The waters are the most beautiful around them, ideal for snorkeling and diving.

If you are wondering how to get to see as many of them as possible, we recommend a boat tour around these secluded beaches. You can take one of many offered boat tours from the island’s main hub, Vila do Abraão.

ilha grande tour

Some of those boats offer lunch and drinks on board, as well as the snorkeling equipment in case you don’t have your own. If you are searching for more privacy, you can rent a boat and go on this great adventure on your own too.

Engage with the locals

Being on an island like Ilha Grande will maybe not give you a wild nightlife as it would be expected for a popular summer destination. On the other side, it will give you something much more valuable. An opportunity to mingle, talk and live with the locals and like a local.

ilha grande tour

You will not find fancy nightclubs there, but you will find more charming and cozy local bars with a great “just local” atmosphere. Join locals for some great caipirinhas, chilled beer, singing, and dancing. You may wish to test your dancing skills with some samba or special forro too. Getting together on Ilha Grande is simply a way of life. Go and get together with the locals.

Some helpful Ilha Grande travel tips

Try to book your accommodation in advance.

Even though the island doesn’t have any larger hotels (which is great for preservation), you will be able to find decent accommodation in smaller hostels, apartments, or rooms. Even though it is really easy to get accommodation on arrival, things may not go so easy during the summer months or even weekends.

Therefore, we recommend you book your accommodation in advance. You are there to enjoy this amazing place, not to spend your time searching for a room. We recommend you to stay at Abraao, a fairly pleasant base from which you set off to discover the rest of this magnificent island.

Hiking shoes!

Get a good pair of hiking shoes, you will need them for sure! Ilha Grande is a road-free and car-free island. All of the trails, cobbled streets, and little green paths are all reserved for walkers only. Keep that in mind and try to remember your way back wherever you go. There will be no taxi to come and save you.

No credit cards – Cash only!

If you ever thought that there is no corner of the world where you wouldn’t be able to use your credit cards, you are wrong. Until recently, Ilha Grande had no ATMs, none! One was brought to the island recently, but it runs out of money often, it doesn’t accept all of the cards, and even if it does,  the withdrawal fees may give you headaches.

Whatever you planned to spend, bring cash for it. And do not worry about it. Ilha Grande is really safe and you will not have any problems carrying all that cash with you.

Admire the wildlife vs. Mind the wildlife: Do not litter!

Among many of its beauties and features, one thing that will leave you breathless is the cleanness and tidiness of the island. The locals make an extraordinary effort to keep it that way, so help them with that. Make sure you leave nothing behind you.

The island will be grateful if you mind the wildlife too. Take your nice and quiet walks, and admire the beauty around you, in silence. The wildlife will be grateful too.

Somewhat different cosmetic sets!

Mosquito repellent, some sunscreen, drinking water, glasses, and a hat, are the items that should be in your cosmetic bag for Ilha grande. Mosquitos can be a bit boring, especially during the charming summer nights. Don’t let them ruin your night, protect yourself. Sunscreen, glasses, and a lot of water will be your best friends on hikes along the island.

Shopping and bargaining time!

There is no better way to remember your fantastic trip to Ilha Grande than to buy a few things to remind you of it. A bargain is a must! You don’t have to be a master at it, but test your bargaining skills !

It will be fun and it will save you some money too. The island alone may be a little limited in souvenir offers, but you will find that little perfect one for sure. Additionally, there are a few things you can buy only in Brazil , check them out.

How to get to Ilha Grande

From rio de janeiro.

Once you are in Rio , you will see numerous tour operators offering full packages to Ilha Grande. They are somewhat pricey, but if your budget allows it, choose one of them. On the other side, you can really get there by yourself. Take the bus from Rodoviária Nova Rio, the main bus station in Rio, to Angra dos Reis, a small coastal town 150 km from Rio. From there, take a boat to Ilha Grande.

From Paraty

If you are in Paraty, another great holiday spot with the colonial spirit, you may reach Ilha Grande from here too. Hop on a boat, taxi shuttle, or schooner going directly to Ilha Grande.

The great Ilha Grande, the big island, the island defined by white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, rainforests, lack of cars and roads. Can it get any better? Probably not. Get ready and go on this unique adventure. Spending just a few days there, exploring its beauty and diversity will for sure help you understand why many call it the island of happiness. You will be happier. And you will return home richer for another unforgettable adventure.
