8 Things to do in Kanchanaburi – Day Trip to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok

' src=

Kanchanaburi is a perfect destination to make a day trip from Bangkok. Besides the beautiful River Kwai and the Erawan National Park, Kanchanaburi is also distinct for its tragic history.

kanchanaburi one day trip

Located 150 km to the west of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi was the place where prisoners of war were exploited under the Japanese army during World War II. They worked to build the rail route from Thailand to Myanmar, which now is called Death Railway.

Since the 1957 movie based on this tragic story, ‘The Bridge over the River Kwai’, Kanchanaburi became well-known and attracted many tourists, who wish to visit the museums, war cemeteries, and the Death Railway built by POWs with blood and tears as well as its lush nature and emerald lagoon.

Among the many attractions in Kanchanaburi, here are some of the best spots you can visit.

1. Bridge over the River Kwai & Death Railway

kanchanaburi one day trip

The Bridge over the River Kwai is the most famous and well-known part of the Death Railway. It is known that 16,000 POWs and about 100,000 slaves died during the construction, which is why it’s called Death Railway.

You can either walk across the bridge while enjoying the view at the small side platforms between the spans or take one of the trains in operation that cross the bridge every day. The most famous section of the railway is the way to the “Dangerous Curve (Krasae Cave)”. If you want to take a tour with a train ride of this section, click here .

  • Address: Ban Tai, Mueang Kanchanaburi District, Kanchanaburi 71000, Thailand
  • Train Ticket Price: 100 baht for non-Thai nationality.

2. Hellfire Pass

kanchanaburi one day trip

Hellfire Pass was a part of the railroad where they needed to cut through a mountain to connect the tracks. This stretch of the railway was named as such because the POWs working on this site with torches at night resembled ‘hell’.  Visit Hellfire Pass in order to witness the cruel conditions of the POWS as well as other historical sites in Kanchanaburi with this tour!

3. Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

kanchanaburi one day trip

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is located across from Kanchanaburi railway station. This is where 7,000 POWs of the Death Railway, mostly from the U.K., the Netherlands, and Australia, are buried and commemorated. After the war ended, the Allies decided to move all the buried POWs bodies along the railway to either the cemetery in Kanchanaburi or in Myanmar if the POWs died closer to Myanmar(Burma).

The cemetery is neatly maintained. However, during the rainy season access to graves may be closed to prevent damage to the grounds.

If you want to visit Kanchanaburi War Cemetery with other famous attractions, simply join this tour .

  • Address: 284/66 Sangchuto Rd, Tambon Ban Tai, Amphoe Mueang Kanchanaburi, Chang Wat Kanchanaburi 71000, Thailand
  • Entrance Fee: Free
  • Opening Hours: 09:00-17:00

4. JEATH War Museum

kanchanaburi one day trip

JEATH War Museum, located close to the Bridge over the River Kwai, is where you can learn more about the construction of the Death Railway and the prisoners. The museum is named after the countries whose casualties were meant to be commemorated: Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand and the Netherlands. The building resembles the jail where the prisoners were incarcerated. It houses personal items such as photographs & clothes as well as some drawings by ex-prisoners depicting their life in the camps.

If you want to visit JEATH War Museum with other famous attractions, book this join-in tour .

This tour , which goes to JEATH War Museum and then further to the remoter Hellfire Pass instead of Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and Krasae Cave is another great option!

  • Entrance Fee: 40 baht
  • Opening Hours: 08:30-18:00

5. Krasae Cave

kanchanaburi one day trip

Krasae Cave is a small cave on the Death Railway near the famous Dangerous Curve. It has been said that this area was one of the most difficult to construct and the most dangerous sections of the Death Railway. This is the spot where you might have seen in a picture with people sticking out their heads from the windows of a train on Death Railway.

kanchanaburi one day trip

You can walk to the cave from Thamkrasae Station. However, there are no handrails, thus be careful not to trip. The train drivers are well-aware that tourists do walk the tracks in this area and normally give enough warning as they approach. It is absolutely worth trying the walk if heights don’t bother you.

Krasae Cave houses Buddha images that the locals have respected for a very long time. If you want to visit Krasae Cave with other famous attractions, the cheapest & easiest option is to book this join-in tour .

  • Address: Lum Sum, Sai Yok District, Kanchanaburi 71150, Thailand

6. Cruise / Jet ski tour at River Kwai

kanchanaburi one day trip

The most luxurious ways to explore Kanchanaburi area would be by cruises or even jet skis along the River Kwai. Some people say it is the best thing to do in Kanchanaburi as you can really soak up the sceneries in such a chill environment.

If you define yourself as a thrill-seeker, jet skiing would be a better option for you than a cruise. Both options offer a short course (1hr, 1.5hrs) and a long course (2hrs, 2.5hrs). Choose based on your preference and schedule.

If you want to get on a cruise or a jet ski along the River Kwai, book this private tour . You can get on it with additional charges.

  • Cost for cruises and jet skis – 1.5-hour River Kwai cruise: 1,400 baht per boat – 2-hour River Kwai cruise: 1,800 baht per boat – 1-hour River Kwai jet ski tour: 4,300 baht per 2 people – 2.5-hour River Kwai jet ski tour: 6,300 baht per 2 people

7. Erawan National Park

kanchanaburi one day trip

Besides its rich history, Kanchanaburi is also famous for its beautiful Erawan National Park and the Erawan Waterfall, a seven-tiered waterfall found inside the park.

When you visit Erawan Waterfall, don’t forget a towel and a swimsuit, because there are plenty of turquoise lagoons perfect for swimming. When swimming, you will find doctor fishes everywhere eating the dead skin off your feet. It takes some time to get used to the strange and tickling feeling, but you should definitely try it while at the Erawan National Park.

Erawan National Park and the waterfall is tricky to get there by public transit. The best way to get there is to book a private taxi or transfer service.

13 Amazing Things to do in Kanchanaburi Province

Kanchanaburi Travel Guide

What's In This Guide?

The ultimate kanchanaburi travel guide.

This Kanchanaburi travel guide will detail waterfalls, caves, rivers, jungle trails, national parks, and some interesting World War 2 History.

Popular attractions include the Erawan Falls, Hellfire Pass, and the Bridge Over the River Kwai. However, there are also some great off-the-beaten-path attractions in Kanchanaburi where hardly any tourists go (such as 7 great national parks to explore).

Kanchanaburi is just two hours from Bangkok by a minivan – book your van tickets here . This makes it an easy destination to escape the city and head out hiking the mountains, showering under a waterfall, and cruising leisurely down the river.

Did I mention you can stay at one of these amazing floating jungle rafts for under $50 per night on Agoda? Check it out now for great discounts.

Waterfalls in Kanchanaburi

There are a total of 23 waterfalls in Kanchanaburi! Many are located deep in the jungle, accessible only by hiking trails where you are supposed to take a guide.

Some waterfalls are quite small and only have water during the wet season, I’ll let you know which ones they are. Others have running water all year round.

Here I have detailed some of the best and most popular waterfalls in Kanchanaburi.

1. Erawan Waterfall

The Erawan Waterfall is one of the most accessible waterfalls near Bangkok. This 7 tiered waterfall runs through a leafy green jungle where a freshwater stream is turned a cloudy emerald green color as it dissolves the calcium carbonate in the limestone.

The lower levels of the waterfall can be quite busy. but as you climb higher through the jungle the crowd tends to drop off. There are a series of deep pools where you can jump in for a refreshing swim, the perfect escape from the tropical jungle heat. My favorite level here is right at the top.

The Erawan Falls is located in the Erawan National Park, about 53 kilometers from Kanchanaburi. It is possible to reach the Erawan Falls by public bus, motorbike, Tuk-Tuk, and taxi. Read my full guide to the Erawan National Park for more information on how to get there from Bangkok.

Erawan Fall Natipnal Park

2. Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall

The Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall is arguably the most stunning waterfall in Kanchanaburi. It is located deep in the forest of the Sri Nakarin National Park, about 95 kilometers north of Kanchanaburi, next to the Sri Nakarin Dam. If you are the adventurous type, this will be one of the ultimate things to do in Kanchanaburi province.

There are 7 levels of the Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall which are accessed by two different trails. The first trail which provides access to levels 1 to 4 starts just near the carpark and takes about 30 minutes to complete a round trip without stopping. The second trail which provides access to levels 5 to 7 starts just across the bridge from the carpark. This trail is unpaved, muddy and longer than the first. These are both separate trails that cannot be connected together to form a loop.

For more information on planning your trip, you can visit this article on Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall .

The Sri Nakarin National Park is open from 6am to 5pm daily. There is a 300 THB (USD 10) entry fee for foreigners.

Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall

3. Kratengjeng Waterfall

The Kratengjeng Waterfall is located about 170 kilometers north west of Kanchanaburi on the way to Sangkhlaburi. Kratengjeng is a super remote waterfall deep in the forest and sees hardly any tourists, mainly because no one knows about it. This makes it one of my favorite waterfalls in the whole of Thailand and one of my favorite places to go jungle trekking in Thailand.

There are 9 levels to this waterfall which are accessed by a heavily overgrown jungle trail. Along the way, you will find jungle bananas and sings of wild elephants passing the area like deep footprints in the mud.

Kratengjeng Waterfall is located in the Khao Laem National Park which means that national park entry fees of 300 THB (USD 10) for foreigners apply.

Kratengjeng Waterfall in Kanchanaburi

4. Sai Yok Noi Waterfall

The Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, also called Khao Pung, is located 48 kilometers northwest of Kanchanaburi. It is less touristy than the Erawan Falls and sees even fewer tourists than the Sai Yok Yai Waterfall.

The best time to visit this waterfall is in the wet season from June to October. It is possible that during the dry season there is no water flowing here and best to check with a local before visiting.

Sai Yok Noi Waterfall is located in the Sai Yok National Park which technically means there should be an entry fee. However, most people tend to go in for free as there never seems to be anyone collecting the fees here.

5. Sai Yok Yai Waterfall

The Sai Yok Yai Waterfall is located about 85 kilometers north west of Kanchanaburi in the Sai Yok National Park. It is about 38 kilometers beyond the Sai Yok Noi Waterfall as you continue towards Sangkhlaburi (I suggest combining both into one trip). Sai Yok Yai Waterfall is less touristy than the Erawan Falls, however, still sees quite a few local Thai tourists on weekends.

There is just one level here where the stream pours out into the River Kawi Noi, eventually meeting up with the River Kwai Yai further south. The best time to visit this waterfall is in the wet season from June to October. During the dry season, you will most likely find water flowing but sometimes just a small stream.

The Sai Yok National Park is open from 7am to 5pm daily. The entry fee is 200 THB (USD 8) for foreigners and an additional charge for your vehicle.

Sai Yok Yai Waterfall, Kanchanaburi

6. Jokkradin Waterfall

This is a smaller waterfall located out near the Thai-Myanmar border near the village of Thong Pha Phum. The waterfall is also sometimes spelled as Chokkradin, so don’t get confused with the names. The Jokkradin Waterfall is in the Thong Pha Phum National Park, therefore standard National Park fees apply – 30 THB for Thais, 300 THB for foreigners.

Jokkradin Waterfall

7. Pha Sawan Waterfall

The Pha Sawan Waterfall is located midway between Pha That Waterfall and Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall in the Sri Nakarin National Park. It is about 135 kilometers north of Kanchanaburi, with the final 13 kilometers passable only by 4WD. It is also possible to hike that final 13km, which would require about 7 hours total for the round trip.

There are 7 levels at the Pha Sawan Waterfall, taking about 40 minutes to hike to the top. The waterfall’s top-level is a huge 80 meters tall, making it one of the most impressive waterfalls in Kanchanaburi.

War History in Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi has numerous WW2 History sites. Most sites are associated with the construction of the Death Railway, which used to run from Yangon (Myanmar) to Singapore.

If you want to visit multiple WW2 sites in one day you should check out this Kanchanaburi history tour . This tour includes; Hellfire Pass, the Death Railway, Bride Over the River Kwai, lunch, and private transport!

8. Death Railway

The Death Railway is the 415km long railway line that connected Yangoon to Singapore. It was used as a supply route by the Japanese Army in WW2. The Death Railway consisted of a series of bridges and stone cuttings. The most notable parts of the Death Railway are the Hellfire Pass and the Bridge Over the River Kwai.

9. Hellfire Pass Memorial

Hellfire Pass Memorial

The Hellfire Pass was the most brutal section for the Allied POW in the construction of the Death Railway. This 75-meter-long, 25-meter-deep stone cutting section was excavated almost entirely by hand. Thousands of soldiers died in the construction of this section of the Death Railway.

The Hellfire Pass Memorial is located approximately 60km north-west of Kanchanaburi towards Sai Yok waterfalls.

Hellfire Pass Opening Hours : 7 days per week, 9am to 4pm. Entry is free.

10. Bridge Over the River Kwai

Bridge Over the River Kwai

This piece of War War 2 history was made famous by the self-titled movie “Bridge Over the River Kwai.” The bridge was part of the 415km long Burma Railway which connected Bangkok to Yangon, serving as a supply route for the Japanese Army.

The bridge which stands today is a reconstruction of the original bridge, which during the war was repeatedly bombed.

The Bridge Over the River Kwai is located within walking distance of the town center and is open to visitors all day every day. You can walk across the bridge by foot, just watch out for the train as is comes across.

Bridge Over the River Kwai Opening Hours: All day, every day. Entry is free.

11. Allied Forces War Cemetery

Kanchanaburi Allied Forces War Cemetary

The Allied Force War Cemetery is dedicated to those soldiers in the Allied Forces who died as Prisoners of War (POW) after being captured by the Japanese Army. Many of the soldiers died due to slave labor, malaria, and poor living conditions. Over 16,000 soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, and Britain died in this part of Thailand during the construction of the Death Railway.

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery Opening Hours: 7 days per week, 8am to 5pm. Entry is free.

12. JEATH War Museum

No, it’s not a spelling mistake, the name JEATH stands for the primary nationalities involved in the construction of the Death Railway, being; Japanese, English, Australia, America, Thai, and Holland. The JEATH War Museum contains relics found from the POW camps used when building the railway.

The museum contains an interesting collection of artifacts. However, it is fairly rundown and in need of refurbishment making it one of the most obscure things to do in Kanchanaburi. 30 minutes here will be sufficient.

JEATH War Museum Opening Hours : 8.30am to 4.30pm. Entry is 40 THB.

13. Sangkhlaburi

Tubing in Sangkhlaburi

Sangkhlaburi is the off-the-beaten-track section of this Kanchanaburi travel guide. This remote part of Kanchanaburi is located 200km north-west of Kanchanaburi, towards the Thai-Myanmar border.

Sangkhlaburi has some amazing attractions in the jungle such as the Kratengjeng Waterfall a beautiful waterfall accessed via a heavily overgrown jungle trail.  The most iconic attraction in Sangkhlaburi is the Wooden Mon Bridge which crosses Lake Vajiralongkorn, the longest of it’s kind in the world.

Check out my complete guide to Sangkhlaburi for plenty more things to do around town, including; an underwater temple, the Three Pagodas Pass market on Myanmar’s border, elephant sanctuaries and more waterfalls hidden in the jungle.

How to Get to Kanchanaburi

Minivan – The quickest and easiest way to get to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok is by minivan ( tickets and timetables ) . Tickets start from just 150 THB per person. A one-way journey takes about 3 hours. Vans depart from Mochit bus terminal which is easy to get to from the Mochit BTS station.

Train – trains are terribly slow, hot and uncomfortable in Bangkok. If you really want to get a train to Kanchanaburi you can hop on at Thonburi Station for about 100 THB per person. A one-way journey could take anywhere between 3 to 6 hours. no pre-bookings are required for the train.

Taxi – a taxi from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi will cost between 1,600 and 2,000 THB one-way. The journey will take about as long as the minivan. Flag down a taxi in Bangkok and negotiate the fare first.

Hotels in Kanchanaburi

There are some hostels and plenty of budget hotels in Kanchanaburi’s town center. You can easily get a private room for under 1000 THB (USD 40) per night in the areas just north or south of the Bridge Over the River Kwai.

While there are lots of budget options in the town, I highly recommend staying on a floating raft house in the jungle a bit further out of town. It is a fantastic experience that is quite unique to Kanchanaburi.

Jungle Raft Houses

Kanchanaburi Hotels

My favorite floating raft house in Kanchanburi is the Tayan Resort and Spa where I have stayed four times so far. I love is being able to kick back in a hammock or jump in the river for a cool swim in the afternoon.

The floating rafts are fairly basic but come with a large double bed, private bathroom, air conditioner, a riverfront view, and a hammock. There is a restaurant down by the river open for lunch and dinner, and a complimentary breakfast is included with your booking.

The Tayan Resort raft house is located about 30 kilometers (25 minutes) out of town but is considerably cheaper than some of the more upmarket raft houses around Kanchanaburi.

Hotels in Kanchanaburi

Mid Range Hotels

Kanpura Hotel

There are a number of mid-range hotels in Kanchanaburi just north of the Bridge Over the River Kwai. Most of these hotels range in price from USD 30 to USD 100 per night, depending on the comfort level you are after. You will commonly find these hotels have a pool (which is great considering Kanchanaburi is the hottest part of Thailand) and include complimentary breakfast.

  • Kanpura Hotel – USD 30 per night including; air-conditioning, free wifi, and pool
  • Ruen Maihom Riverside Cottage – USD 50 per night including; air-conditioning, free wifi, and pool

Budget Hotels

For the absolute cheapest accommodation in town check out the Jolly Frog Backpackers where beds go for 100 THB per night. It doesn’t seem like you can book this place online, so try to walk in and see if they have any availability.

Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi (กาญจนบุรี) is a paradise for outdoor adventurers and history buffs. Most of the province is jungle, caves, large reservoir lakes, national parks, and waterfalls. It's also home to the notorious WWII "Death Railway" and has some great museums and historical sites from the railroad route.

Kanchanaburi waterfall Thong Pa Phum

Kanchanaburi borders Myanmar at Thailand’s western frontier, just a few hours from Bangkok. It is the third-largest province in Thailand and is dominated by national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, huge manmade lakes, rivers, temples, historic locations, and traditional villages and small towns. If the natural beauty of Thailand inspires you, then Kanchanaburi is a must visit.

The infamous World War II “Death Railway” made famous by the classic film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” ran straight through here and there are a few museum and sites that are well worth visiting.

Getting there

Most people base themselves out of the provincial capital, Kanchanaburi City. This small city is easily accessible from Bangkok by bus, train, private taxi, or by your own transportation. If you’re not driving yourself, we highly recommend doing at least one leg of the journey on the train.

By Car – It is pretty advantageous having your own vehicle in Kanchanaburi, so renting a car and driving from Bangkok is a great option for a lot of people. The roads are in good shape the whole way there, and you’ll save a lot of hassle and money not having to take taxis everywhere you want to go. We always find the best price through Rental c ars.com , and there are pickup locations all over Bangkok.

We find the risks of driving in Thailand to be lower than what a lot of people will lead you to believe, and we personally rent cars often for our travels. That said, everyone measures risk differently so you’ll have to decide if this is for you or not. Personally I feel much safer driving myself than leaving my life in someone else’s hands in a taxi or bus.

By Bus – Buses and smaller vans leave the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok several times per hour. The journey takes two to three hours and costs around 100 baht depending on which class of bus or van you take. The big buses are much safer than the minibusses in Thailand, but they do take longer to get you to your destination. The Southern Bus Station is located across the river in the West of Bangkok, in the Thonburi area. It is best to go there in a taxi.

There are also a few buses per day from Mo Chit Northern Bus Station , but unless you’re staying quite close to here you’ll be better off going to the Southern Bus Station. There are usually a few tourist minibusses each day to Kanchanaburi that leave from Khao San Road. these can be convenient if you’re staying there, but not very comfortable and with a high likelihood of being stuck with a smelly backpacker for three hours.

Kanchanaburi has two bus stations which are about a block apart from one another. They are located at one end of the city so you may arrive quite close to your hotel, or it might be a few kilometers. There are taxis there that will take you to your hotel for a pretty reasonable price. We find them to be mostly honest here.

By train – We very strongly recommend taking the train for either your outbound or return journey. There are two third-class trains that leave from Thonburi Train Station daily. Don’t let “third-class” scare you, these trains are pretty clean and safe, and outside of busy holiday weekends, they don’t get too crowded. The windows and doorways between the cars are all open-air which we love since you don’t feel so sealed in. The view as you are leaving Bangkok is pretty interesting, and during the second half as you pass through lush rice fields it is quite beautiful.

The train costs 100 Baht for foreigners. For Thais, it costs almost nothing and is often free. If this bothers you, just try to keep in perspective that you’re taking a three-hour train journey for about $3 USD. The train station in Kanchanaburi is centrally-located within the city. Check the map app on your phone because your hotel may be a short walk away, otherwise a taxi will be able to take you there.

To cross the famous railway bridge on the train, stay on for one more station past Kanchanaburi and you’ll get to cross. You can then disembark just across the river and take a taxi back. You can also catch the return train to Bangkok here.

By private taxi – Kanchanaburi is close enough to Bangkok that it’s pretty easy to take a taxi there. If you can find a taxi driver who knows how to find a return fare, you can probably get a sedan for up to three people for as little as 2,000 Baht. You can potentially negotiate this with any Bangkok city taxi, or you can ask your hotel to help you with it (which may cost a bit more). You can also book this online through 12Go.Asia where a sedan starts at 2,200 Baht, and there are also plenty of SUV options and even minibusses for larger groups.

From cities other than Bangkok – Buses also go to Kanchanaburi from other cities in Central and Western Thailand. These cities include: Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Hua Hin, Phetchaburi, Samut Songkhram, Ratchaburi, and even Pattaya and Chonburi. The time it takes to get to Kanchanaburi and the cost of the ticket will vary depending on where you depart from.

Kanchanaburi one day tours

We pretty strongly recommend spending at least a night and two partial days in Kanchanaburi, but if you’re short on time it is possible to leave in the morning from Bangkok, see a few of the highlights, and return that night. We find that the best and most intimate tours are from the local company Take Me Tour. Most of the tours on this page leave from Kanchanaburi though, so make sure you find one starts in Bangkok.

Get Your Guide also have some decent Bangkok-Kanchanaburi one day itineraries.

Getting around

The central area of Kanchanaburi is fairly small, but walking from the famous railroad bridge to the Railroad Death Museum and War Cemetary would take about 40 minutes, so you’ll probably want to choose another option.

Bicycle – You can rent bicycles all over town and there’s a good chance your hotel will have them as well. This is a good option for the time you spend exploring the in-town Death Railway sites.

By motorbike – Unless we’ve rented a car from Bangkok, we personally rent motorbikes in Kanchanaburi since they will get you around town, and out to a lot of the province’s other highlights which are around a 60-90 minute drive away. We don’t recommend this unless you already know how to ride. Bikes should cost 200-300 Baht per day, and you might find a clutchless-geared bike for 150.

By Samlor (three-wheeled taxi) – The standard taxi for journeys in town is the samlor, a motorbike with a sidecar, topped with an awning. The price to go across town should start at around 60 Baht, but expect to pay double that if you’re more than two people. These can seat quite a few people, but you won’t go very fast if you pile five big-bodied foreigners on.

By Songthaew (pickup truck taxi) – shared songthaews patrol up and down the main Sangchuto Road and charge a flat 10 Baht per person. If you’re really on a tight budget you can take one of these. Tell them where you’re going before you get on, and make sure they know you’re not trying to hire them as a private taxi.

Getting further out of town – To visit the sites out of town, you’ll either need to go by private taxi, on a tour, by your own car or motorbike, or by a privately hired songthaew. There is also a public bus to and from Erawan Falls.

Our recommended “Death Railway” history itinerary

One great option especially if you are very interested in the Death Railway history is to take the train from Bangkok, pass Kanchanaburi City and continue to the end of the line in Nam Tok (น้ำตก). You can then head back and get off at Tham Krasae Bridge Station (ถ้ำกระแซ) and stay at any of the excellent hotels in the area (the best is Suan Sai Yok Resort . It’s located literally at the Tham Krasae Train Station, and the grounds of the resort look up at the Tham Krasae bridge.

This out and back train journey will take you across the famous bridge over the River Kwae on the train, and you’ll get to pass the famous trellis that hugs the cliff over the river at Tham Krasae twice. You’ll then be staying in the area so you can cross it again on foot that evening.

On day two you should visit Hellfire Pass and the nearby Sai Yok National Park. Staying out here puts you only an hour from both locations, rather than the two hours from Kanchanaburi City. You can hire a driver, or rent motorbikes to visit these two attractions.

On the morning of the third day, take the train again to get back to Kanchanaburi City to explore more of the railway history, museums, cemeteries, and of course, see the Bridge on the River Kwai. You could then either return to Bangkok that night or spend another day exploring more of the province, perhaps visiting Erawan Falls.

What to do (in the city)

Bridge on the river kwai.

During World War II, Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and Southeast Asian laborers were forced by the Japanese to build the Burma Railway from Bangkok to Rangoon. Nearly 100,000 civilian laborers and 12,000 Allied POWs died during the construction. This historic and tragic railway cuts through the whole of Kanchanaburi and the most famous spot along the railroad is the Bridge on the River Kwai.

Historical note: The bridge was made famous by the excellent film The Bridge on the River Kwai, but in reality that film was based on a novel which itself was a work of fiction. The novel’s author though, was actually a POW laborer on the Death Railway, and his experience absolutely informed the novel. To promote tourism, the name of Kanchanaburi’s river was changed to Khwae Noi, meaning “little Khwae”. The nearby Khwae Yai (“big Khwae”) River may have inspired the title of the book, but the story is fiction. Don’t let this detract from the experience of seeing the bridge though, it really is the original bridge built during the war, and you can see certain sections which look different as they were replacements after a successful Allied bombing run.

You can access the bridge from the center of Kanchanaburi and can walk along the bridge and even on the tracks. When a train approaches you can either get off the bridge entirely or stand at platforms placed along the bridge where you will get an up-close look at the train as it passes.

Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and Thailand-Burma Railway Centre

Across town from the bridge is the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. This is the final resting place of nearly 7,000 prisoners of war who died building the Burma Railway. It is a very somber spot and respect is expected of those visiting. Many of the graves include pictures and stories of the deceased, and spending some time reading and learning about these individuals is a sobering experience.

Across the road from the cemetery is the excellent Death Railway Museum. This museum does a good job of explaining the history of the railroad, the significance of it, and the horrific conditions under which its builders were forced to live and work.

We prefer to skip all the other Death Railway museums around town as this is the best. The only museum that may be better is the learning center at Hellfire Pass. If you’re going there, you could probably skip this one, unless you are a big history buff.

There is a nice little shop along the river road right in town where you can book kayak trips on the river. Stop in and ask the lovely owner about the options. When we went they drove us upriver and launched us with our kayaks, and we then floated about three hours back into the city crossing under the railroad bridge. The scenery was really nice along the way and we highly recommend this. You can contact River Kwai Canoe through their Facebook page, or find them at this location .

What to do (outside the city)

Erawan falls.

An hour’s drive from Kanchanaburi City is Erawan National Park where you’ll find the famous Erawan Falls. This is arguably the most beautiful waterfall in Thailand — it certainly looks that way in photos! — but it is also very popular and it gets crowded. Teal blue water flows over seven tiers of the waterfall making for a stunning sight. You can explore the surrounding jungle and swim at all seven levels. It can get busy here, especially midday. The best times to go are at 8 AM when they open, or at around 3 PM, and stay until they close at 4:30 PM. The entrance price for foreigners is 300 Baht, 100 for Thais.

Srinakarin Dam

If you visit Erawan Waterfall, you should definitely continue just ten minutes further up the road to drive to the top of Srinakarin Dam (เขื่อนศรีนครินทร์). There’s not all that much to speak of up here, but the views are pretty impressive and it is actually a pretty big dam. The best time to visit is late afternoon, right after Erawan closes.

Wat Tham Suea

Located a 25-minute drive southeast from Kachanaburi City is the mountaintop temple of Wat Tham Suea. The temple has a large sitting Buddha image encased in an awning. From the temple, there are stunning views of the surrounding countryside and lush green rice fields. This location has become very popular and several cafes and restaurants overlook the fields and the temple with long boardwalks winding their way through the fields providing great photo opportunities.

Sai Yok National Park

While not as popular or as well known as Erawan National Park, Sai Yok National Park provides as much, if not more, natural beauty. Here you will find Sai Yok Noi and Sai Yok Yai waterfalls. Both waterfalls are surrounded by the thick jungle of the Tenasserim Hills and are less busy and more peaceful. Within the national park are three caves: Lawa Cave, Daowadueng Cave, and Kaew Cave. they are filled with impressive stalagmites and stalactites and are easily accessible from within the park. Sai Yok is not far from Hellfire Pass and the two combine for a nice day trip. The entrance fee for the national park is 300 Baht for foreigners, 100 for Thais.

Elephant Sanctuary

We always recommend against visiting elephant riding camps and elephant circuses in Thailand. You will have a much better experience visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary where the animals are well-looked after happy. Kanchanaburi has a few options for this.

We recommend booking one that works with the Elephant Nature Park as because that’s the best indicator we’re aware of that a given sanctuary is actually ethical. You can book a an elephant experience in Kanchanaburi directly from this page on the ENP website , just scroll to the Kanchanaburi section as most of the projects are in the North. You can read more about ENP and why this is our recommendation in our post on booking ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand .

Death Railway and Hell Fire Pass Memorial

The laborers on the Death Railway endured brutal conditions and backbreaking work, and nowhere is this more evident than at Hellfire Pass. Using little more than hammers and chisels, they dug a passageway through solid rock for a train to pass through. The museum here is excellent, the pass itself is haunting, and the trails around the area that follow the old railroad bed and still have some relics around are tragically beautiful.

Prasat Muang Singh Historical Park

This is a 13th century Khmer ruins located between Kanchanaburi and Sai Yok National Park. The red laterite stones stand in contrast to the green of the jungle surrounding it. The prang and the surrounding walls are well preserved and it is worth a short visit.

What to do (in Sangklaburi)

A three-hour drive northwest from Kanchanaburi City, Sangklaburi (สังขละบุรี) is worth visiting for people who like to get off the beaten path (note though that it’s popular with Thai tourists). Sangklaburi is famous for its Mon culture and heritage, sites around the Northern end of a huge reservoir, thick jungle, a national park, and the border with Myanmar.

Three Pagoda Pass

The Three Pagoda Pass is located on the border of Thailand and Myanmar near the second largest town in the province, Sangklaburi. This area is historically significant for Thailand and Southeast Asia. It is believed that Buddhist teaching entered the region through the pass 1,700 years ago, and it has been a historic invasion route for both the Burmese, Siamese, and Khmer armies. Here you’ll find three small pagodas, a place to buy souvenirs including some from Myanmar, and see some of the hill tribe cultures of the area. Note that Thais can cross the border here, but foreigners cannot.

Saphan Mon (The Mon Bridge)

Stretching 400 meters and spanning the Songaria River, the Mon Bridge is the longest hand-made bridge in Thailand and the second-longest in the world. At any time of year, it is a great location to watch a sunrise or sunset and explore the Mon culture. In the dry season, it is possible to hire a boat or rent a kayak to explore some of the sunken temples that were abandoned when the Vajiralongkorn Reservoir flooded the region.

Where to stay

There are a lot of accomadation options in Kanchanaburi, both in the city and all around the province. You’ll find everything here from cheap backpacker digs to some of Thailand’s most stylish hotels. One popular choice here are floating bungalows that are anchored right at the river’s edge. Here are our top picks:

If you’re on a budget, you’ll want to stay in closer to the center of town. Our budget pick is conveniently located right in the middle, a short walk to the train station, and an easy stumble home from most of the bars. You can find rooms a bit cheaper than Siam Guesthouse , but you’ll be taking a significant downgrade. This place offers great value for the money.

Our favorite mid-range pick is the U Inchantree Kanchanaburi . This is one of the better value hotels we’ve ever stayed in and has one of the best breakfasts we’ve come across as well. Best of all, it’s located about a four-minute walk from the Bridge on the River Kwai. There’s a nice pool and beautiful river views from the grounds, but the rooms here are set back from the river.

Our luxury pick is undoubtedly the best hotel in the Kanchanaburi City area. The X2 River Kwai Resort is located near the Wang Lan train station three stops past the famous bridge, and it’s just a ten-minute drive by car into the center of town. If you want luxury floating bungalows right on the River Kwae, this is our favorite.

If you want a luxury option but also want to stay right in the city (basically, if you plan to party and want to stay in nice digs), you should definitely stay in our in-town luxury pick . Natee The Riverfront Hotel is a stylish, design-forward hotel with nice river views, and an unbeatable location along the river right in the middle of town.

Kanchanaburi has a decent nightlife scene, and most of it is right along the Mae Nam Kwae Road which runs parallel to the river. There are a few sports bars along here mostly catering to foreigners, and a few “lady bars” for men who are looking for some female company. A few of our favorite spots are:

  • For good Western pub grub and occassional live music, 1 More Bar is a good option
  • Monkey Bar is usually the place to go if you’re looking for a younger, backpacker crowd, and is the most likely to be busy even if everywhere seems dead.
  • Probably the most-photographed bar in Kanchanaburi, Get Drunk for 10 Baht has a slightly misleading name but is worth a quick stop. Shots of cheap Thai rice liquor and ya dong (the same thing but infused with different herbs and spices) start at 10 Baht each and increase in price as the quality goes up. If you’re gearing up for a wild night, it’s a good place to start.
  • For a more local experience and a wild night out, there is a nightclub called Glitzy Pub that mainly Thais go to that can be a pretty good time. It is loud and the party doesn’t start until 22:30 or so.
  • Aussie Rules Bar is a popular hangout for Kanchanaburi expats.

Where to go next

Head back to Bangkok or go due east into Central Thailand and visit Ayutthaya . You can also go south to check out Ratchaburi , and continue from there into Phetchaburi , the start of Southern Peninsular Thailand.

Most of Thailand falls in to the generic high and low season categories, including Kanchanaburi.

High season - begins in November and runs through to February, bringing cooler temperatures, lush greenery from the previous months of rain, good air quality, and less rain. The downside is larger crowds and sometimes higher prices for tours, flights and accomodation.

Low season - begins in July and runs through to October. During low season the temperatures are higher, the chance of rain and storms are higher. That doesn't mean it's a bad time to visit though, if you can be flexible, there are deals to be found on flights and accomodation.

While it's always hot in Kanchanaburi, the small change in temperature between high and low season can be just enough that the heat isn't unbearable when out and about.

Need more? Read our post discussing the best time to visit Thailand .

Instead of recommending hotels, we think it will be more useful to share our process so you can pick based on your own critera for location, budget and style.

We always start our search on either Booking.com or Agoda . They have an easy to user interface and have some extra benefits for "Genius" and "VIP" users. You can also sometimes pay with credit card in advance if you're playing the cashback or air miles game.

Booking.com

  • Search for specific province, city or town.
  • Apply rating filters for a minimum rating or either 7, 8 or 9.
  • Apply other filters: budget, fitness, breakfast, etc.
  • If you have a specific location in mind, use map view to browse and make a final selection.

If there are too many properties available to choose from, increase the rating filter for less, higher rated selections.

Final notes: Prices are dynamic. Check the same hotel on both Booking.com and Agoda to see which has the best deal at any given time (go through to checkout to make sure all VAT and service charges are factored in). You can go one step further by calling the hotel and checking the price for booking directly. In our experience this saves money 50% of the time but you have less guarantees.

Emergency contacts

Knowing an emergency number could save your own, or somebody elses life. Take a photo or save these numbers on your phone:

Police & emergencies - 191 The most important number to remember. If the operator is unable to speak English, call 1155 (below).

Tourist Police - 1155 or (+66) 2308-0333 This hotline is available 24 hours a day and they will all speak English. This is an important phone number to remember - They will help you out with any concerns or questions you have and can redirect you to the correct number you may need.

Public Ambulance - 1669 Dialing this number will connect you to a public ambulance service, which will dispatch a vehicle to your location. The average response time for urban areas is around 10 minutes, but may take up to 30 minutes in rural areas. English-speaking staff should be available to assist you.

Fire Department - 199 In case of an emergency such as a house fire, or forest fire, call 199 for the Fire Department to be dispatched to your location.

Highway Police - 1193 If you plan on driving in Thailand, then you may end up needing to use this number if you break down in an unsafe place etc.

Kanchanaburi from Bangkok: Tips for a hassle-free journey [2024]

We think visiting Kanchanaburi from Bangkok is a must for anyone travelling to Thailand. With its unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance, including the famous Bridge on the River Kwai, it’s a brilliant contrast to the bustling streets of Bangkok and the sunny beaches of Phuket. Added to this is the sheer number of transportation options that make it so easy to get from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi regardless of your budget. This charming town is perfect for either a day trip or a quick getaway.

You can easily travel to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok by public transport with train, bus, or shuttle. You can also arrange private transport with either by taxi, tour company or make your own way there by renting a car. Read on to find out how we traveled to Kanchanaburi, and all we learnt when visiting recently.

Getting to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok

Travelling by train to kanchanaburi, tips for taking a bus to kanchanaburi from bangkok, what to see in kanchanaburi thailand, where to stay in kanchanaburi, holidays and festivals in kanchanaburi province, frequently asked questions.

Travelling from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi is a route popular for tourists and locals alike. There are several transport options available to get travel the 120km distance to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok , including train, bus, and taxi. Let’s dig into them one by one and go over the pros and cons of each before you book tickets.

Travelling by train is not the quickest choice, but it is popular with two direct services each day from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi. It is also one of the most scenic ways to get to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok.

The direct train journey takes around a little under 3 hours and offers stunning views of the Thai countryside as you travel west.

bangkok to kanchanaburi map

There is no air conditioning on this slow-moving train, but there are fans and the windows that open. This allows you to stick your camera out and capture some lovely rural scenes along the journey.

Unlike some seats on the train to Ayutthaya, the trains on this seat are cushioned.

Monday to Friday, there are two trains per day. These trains depart from Thonburi Train Station, on the other side (west side) of the Chao Phraya River. While you can get here by bus from Siam or Sukhumvit , it can take quite a while thanks to the traffic.

The morning train to Kanchanaburi departs at 07:50 am and arrives at 10.25am. The afternoon train leaves at 1:55pm arriving in Kanchanaburi at 16.30pm. Tickets for tourists cost 100 baht.

You can also jump on a no flag Chao Phraya Express Boat from Sathorn Pier. This is the cheapest way to get to Thonburi Station. The Saphan Taksin BTS Station is 2 minutes walk from this pier. These boats are not that easy to board with luggage, so this option is really best for those with backpacks or carry on luggage.

kanchanaburi one day trip

I recommend you get a taxi to Thonburi train station if you decide to travel by train, but know that most drivers are not keen to go here as they won’t get a return fare easily. Because of this, they may want to negotiate a fixed price. This is less about scamming you and more about making it a deal that works for both of you.

If you are not comfortable negotiating, I would suggest you book a Grab or ask your hotel to get you a taxi at a suitable price.

On weekends there are special excursion trains that leave from the old main train station at Hua Lamphong at 6.30am. These trains make stops at train stations along the way to allow you time to explore key sites.

kanchanaburi one day trip

They are perfect for a one-day visit but they need to be booked in advance as they are popular with locals, too. While time might seem like an easier option, you will find Kanchanaburi is much busier on weekends.

Tips on arriving at Kanchanaburi Station

Once you arrive in Kanchanaburi, it’s important to know there are two train stations so you can make sure you know which one is the best for your visit.

The train stops first at the main Kanchanaburi station, which is in the town centre. This is the stop for you if you are staying by the riverside or in the centre of town. There will be plenty of taxis awaiting the train’s arrival who can take you to your accommodation.

Kanhchanburi station

The train then continues for about 2km on to the River Kwai bridge. The train station is just before the bridge and is called Saphan Kwae Yai. Unless your hotel is on this side of the river before the bridge, get off at the first stop as your taxi will need to cross the bridge near the main station.

By Bus or Minivan to Kanchanaburi

Travelling by bus is another option for getting to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok. There are almost 60 air-conditioned buses a day making the 95km journey from Bangkok.

Many of the services to Kanchanaburi are mini buses that seat 12-21 people and not standard sized buses. There are larger buses, but the terms are often used interchangeably by travel agents across the city. They may also use smaller 10 seater vehicles on some departures. If you are travelling with a large suitcase, it can be pretty squeezy!

Crowd of passengers are queuing for mini van in Bangkok

Several companies operate buses to Kanchanaburi and usually leave from one of two places in Bangkok

  • Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (aka Sai Tai Mai Bus Station) in Thonburi
  • Bangkok Northern Terminal (aka new Mo Chit bus station or Chatuchak bus station)

The journey to Kanchanaburi takes a similar time to the train, about 2.5-3 hours, depending on traffic.

  • From the southern bus station, services to Kanchanaburi leave regularly throughout the day, with the first bus at 4am and the last bus leaving at about 8pm. Minivans start and finish an hour later.
  • From Mo Chit bus station, which is the largest in Bangkok, they begin at 4am. Ticket sales for the Kanchanaburi express from bangkok are on the ground floor and cost about 150 Baht.

There is little difference in travel time from either the Southern Bus Terminal or northern terminal.

Buses cost between $5-8 AUD ($3-5 US)Tickets can be purchased at the terminal or online through bus ticket booking sites like 12goasia.

All buses arrive at Kanchanaburi Bus station which is about 20 minutes walk. You will probably want to grab a taxi to your hotel.

There are a few different types of buses, including larger buses and minibuses.

  • VIP mini buses with 24-32 seats.
  • 1st Class direct buses
  • 2nd class buses that may make lots of stops along the way

These all have air conditioning. You buy tickets for these at the main counters.

Regular mini buses sell their bus tickets only at their platform. It’s confusing to find the bus you have booked if you book online, so make sure you note any directions they send in their confirmation. You will be glad you did when you get there!

If you have a lot of luggage or are tall or bigger than average, you might want to book an extra seat if you choose a mini bus. This will give you some more space to move around.

Check the ticket price and service availability on 12Go.asia

By Taxi or Private Transfer

There are a number of ways to find a private taxi driver to take you to Kanchanaburi from bangkok.

  • Grab – Choose either a regular Grab car or an executive for more comfort.
  • Indrive – similar to grab however you set the amount you are prepared to pay and drivers then offer their services. You can see the car and the driver’s information and compare prices before you choose. We used this from Ayutthaya and it worked perfectly. We looked at the price on Grab to give us an idea of the going rate.
  • My Day Trip – Connects you with local drivers for door-to-door service and optional sightseeing.
  • Get Your Guide – This is a good option if you want to book in advance and not have to decide once you start travelling. You can book either a transfer or a Kanchanaburi tour.

How to decide which option is best for you

All the options available for getting to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok each come with their own advantages and disadvantages. Which one is best for you comes down to three things: budget, comfort and time.

  • If you don’t have a lot of luggage, then I think the train would be my preferred option.
  • If you are on a budget and staying in the Khao San Road area, then the boat service to the train station is a good choice
  • If you are staying on the dark green BTS or the blue MRT lines, then a bus from the Northern Bus station would be a good choice.
  • If you are tired, are travelling with a group, or just want some comfort and flexibility, then a private transfer would be my pick.
  • A new highway to Kanchanaburi is due to open mid 2024 and will cut the driving time to under an hour!

We had planned to take the train, but at the last minute, we booked a private transfer. We were staying riverside and transport to the train station seemed to be a big effort after a very busy few days exploring Bangkok.

I discovered My Day Trip when I started looking for private transfers and it stood out because I noticed you could add stops along the way, with a set price for each stop. I enjoyed knowing up front what the costs would be. Our trip went perfectly and we would use this company again.

We recommend planning ahead and book train tickets well in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.

Kanchanaburi Province is known for its rich history, stunning national parks, and beautiful waterfalls. Here are some of the top attractions to see just a short distance from Bangkok.

The River Kwai, also known as the Mae Klong River, is a major tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi. Visitors can take a boat ride along the river and admire the beautiful scenery.

River Kwai Kanchaaburi

Death Railway

The Death Railway, also known as the Burma Railway, was built during World War II by prisoners of war and forced laborers from Japan and Myanmar. The railway is a major part of Kanchanaburi’s history and is now an important site visited by almost all who come to Kanchanaburi.

Bridge Over the River Kwai

The Bridge Over the River Kwai is the most famous landmark in Kanchanaburi. The bridge was part of the Death Railway and is now a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can walk across the bridge and learn about its history. The Jeath war museum is nearby.

Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum

Hellfire Pass is a section of the Death Railway that was cut through solid rock by prisoners of war and forced laborers. The pass is now a memorial site and there is an excellent museum, built by the Australian Government, that explains the story of what happened here and commemorates the lives lost during the construction of the railway.

Hellfire pass memorial walk

You can take a guided tour and learn about the history of the pass and then walk along the original tracks. To visit Hellfire Pass you are best to stay on the train to Nam Tok Station.

Check out our detailed guide to the War Memorials and Museums in Kanchanaburi, especially if you are planning to visit for Anzac Day.

After you have paid your respects at one of more of the memorials it’s time to check out some of Kanchanaburi’s other sites.

Erawan National Park

Erawan National Park is about an hour outside Kanchanaburi. The park is famous for its beautiful waterfalls, including the seven-tiered Erawan Falls . You can hike to the top level and swim in many of the pools along the way.

kanchanaburi one day trip

Arrive early and expect to spend two hours here if you want to walk to the top level waterfall. You could easily spend half a day if you decide to swim in some of the falls.

Wat Tham Suea – Tiger Cave Temple

One of the most spectacular of Kanchanaburi’s temples , Wat Tham Suea, is a must. Known as the “Tiger Cave Temple”this place is more than just a religious site; it’s a blend of nature, history, and art.

There are two stairways leading to the site, but before you climb, look for the one facing Kanchanaburi from the parking area — it’s a bit easier on the legs. If you have mobility problems, there is a small cable car (currently under repair) that delivers you to the top for under 20 baht return.

kanchanaburi one day trip

Once you reach the top, there’s an amazing 18 metre high gold leaf-adorned Buddha waiting to greet you.

Beyond the typical temple vibes, Wat Tham Suea has its own unique touch with its intricate carvings and relics. The summit offers a killer panorama of the surrounding mountains and vast rice paddies.

We made an offering and got a blessing from the monk while we were there. If you have never done this, I recommend you do. This unique experience will stay with you.

If you are looking at Kanchanaburi Hotels, I can tell you it may take a while to decide! A wide range of options to suit every budget and taste are on offer here. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious stay or a budget-friendly option, Kanchanaburi has something for everyone.

Cross River Kwai Resort

Guest Rating : 8.9 I Location : south of city centre I Check price

For those who are looking for a luxurious stay, they don’t come much better than the Cross River Kwai .

With floating cabins, pool front hotel rooms and Falling Waters villas featuring private pools, this is the type of resort that offers total relaxation. It’s also a special place to come back to after visiting the moving war sites. Being outside the busy city centre, it offers peace and quiet and its riverfront location is incredibly picturesque.

Unlike many of the floating villas that Kanchanaburi is famous for, this resort is close to town and some of the popular sites. We stayed in a Falling Water Villa and will return in a heartbeat. My favourite hotel stay in a very long time.

We visited Good Times Resort last July and enjoyed a delicious lunch at their on-site restaurant that overlooks the river.

We did not stay overnight. However, we did take a quick look at the rooms while they were being serviced and they looked comfortable and great value for the price.

A Day in Kanchanaburi - Perfect 24 Hours Guide

Apart from being the gateway to national parks in Thailand's wild west, Kanchanaburi also has a dark history. Located around 150 kilometers to the west of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is best known for the many memorials and museums that pay tribute to thousands of prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian laborers that died as a result of forced labor. If you have 1 day in Kanchanaburi, here is how you can make the most of your time here.

How to spend 1 day in Kanchanaburi?

Begin your 24 hours in Kanchanaburi by first visiting the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum . Located outside the city, this museum is built at the site where the POWs and labors were forced to use picks and shovels to cut through the mountain so that the railway could pass through it. On the way back to the city, stop at the Sai Yok Noi Waterfall. These scenic waterfalls are just perfect to disconnect. Be back in the city for lunch. After lunch, visit the Death Railway Bridge. The most famous site in the city, this site is also called the Burma Railway. This bridge played an important link between Thailand and Burma and is visited by everyone who comes to Kanchanaburi. Next head to WW2 Museum. To understand Kanchanaburi's wartime history, a visit to this museum is a must. In the evening, walk along the River Kwai and enjoy the many scenic views.

Kanchanaburi, the city of the bridge

Kanchanaburi travel guide.

Kanchanaburi is a small quiet town in west-central Thailand, known mainly for it’s leading role during the Japanese invasion in World War II, when over two hundred thousand Allied and Asian prisoners of war were forced to build the Death Railway. It’s most emblematic element, the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, is located in Kanchanaburi town. Besides other places of interest related to that historical episode, this town offers a splendid riverside location, several markets with authentic local flavor, beautiful Buddhist monasteries and a languid provincial town atmosphere that invites to take things easy.

Conveniently located only about 120 km west of Bangkok, it is an easy getaway from the Thai capital. If you have time enough, in the surrounding area there’s National Parks with some of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Thailand, hilltop temples with splendid views, and historical sites associated with the construction of the infamous Death Railway.

Death Railway Museum

Death Railway Museum

The Death Railway Museum is the best museum in the city to learn about the history of the Death Railway and the prisoners who built it . In its exhibition halls you’ll find prisoner objects, tools used to build the railway, railway parts, maps and videos. If you don’t have enough with this museum, you can continue with the JEATH War Museum , a smaller museum that details how was daily life for the prisoners during the building of the railway . The museum was created in 1977 by an abbot from Wat Chaichumpon monastery, which is located next door and you can visit as well. The pictures and paintings that make up the exhibition are displayed in wooden and bamboo structures, which aim to recreate the simple barracks where prisoners slept.

🏨 Where to stay in Kanchanaburi

Best city areas to stay:.

In relation to the rather small size of Kanchanaburi, when choosing accommodation you should know that the city has a few well differentiated areas, and all of them can be a good option depending on what you’re looking for. The southern stretch of Mae Nam Khwae street is the most popular backpacker area, and the main party scene in town -noisy indeed-. The northern stretch of the same street is a quiet area across the river, but some might say a bit too far away from downtown. Downtown you’ll find a few good value guest houses, while the most fancy hotels and resorts are not found in Kanchanaburi itself but in its outskirts, with amazing views over the River Kwai.

Every Chef I Talked to Loves This Tortilla Press

kanchanaburi one day trip

If you’ve ever had a made-from-scratch tortilla fresh off a comal, you understand: No premade grocery-store tortilla can possibly compare. Whether it’s a fragrant, slightly sweet corn tortilla or a still warm, slightly nutty flour tortilla, the difference between the homemade kind and the discs sitting in plastic on the shelf is so vast they may as well be totally separate food groups.

The most essential tool to making fresh tortillas at home is a good tortilla press. Sure, you can use a rolling pin or a wine bottle to flatten them out individually, but as I found out firsthand when I took up tortilla-making as a pandemic hobby, hand-rolling each of them gets old fast, particularly since I rarely made tortillas in batches of fewer than a dozen. Not only is a tortilla press much quicker at flattening the masa for tortillas into a pliable circular shape ready for griddling, it helps ensure that the thickness of your tortillas is consistent, which means that they’ll cook more evenly. Plus, you can use it to make other flatbreads at home, like roti, parathas, naan, or pita. I’ve even used mine to flatten pie dough.

A press is a pretty simple gadget. It’s essentially two flat plates attached with a hinge that allow you to put something in between them. You use a handle to press down on the contents inside, applying even pressure to flatten them. (Typically, you line the press with a plastic bag or parchment paper to prevent the tortilla dough from sticking, another lesson I learned the hard way.) When I started looking into tortilla presses, I learned that there are two major genres. The first is a circular press, usually made out of aluminum or cast iron. The second are square presses, usually also made of metal, though sometimes wood.

One square press stood out in my research: a jewel-colored, sleek, metal number that popped up repeatedly among the Mexican chefs I follow on social media. I noticed it in the Instagram Stories of Bricia Lopez , co-owner of Guelaguetza in Los Angeles and author of Asada , and in the kitchen behind Mi Cocina writer Rick Martinez in his videos of his kitchen in Mazatlán. When I reached out to Martinez to ask, he confirmed: It was the Doña Rosa Tortilla Press, an artisan-made press from Oaxaca distributed in the U.S. by the masa harina brand Masienda.

“I love this press so much,” Martinez told me. “I have two of them. It is so beautiful that it makes me want to make tortillas from scratch just so I can pull it out and use it.”

The press is made out of powder-coated rolled steel, which means that not only is it an appealing pop of color for your kitchen — it comes in a cobalt blue, a seafoam green, a bright, poppy yellow, white, and black — it also is a serious piece of equipment. The weight of the press, Martinez explained, is key. It means that it doesn’t wiggle back and forth while you use it. “I love the heft of it. It is virtually indestructible, and lasts forever, which is why a lot of restaurants and taco stands in Mexico use them,” Martinez said. (Plus, when Mi Cocina came out, the brand released an edition in pink to match the cover of the book.)

It’s not just Martinez, though. As I reached out to chefs for their thoughts on the best tortilla press, time and time again, I got the same answer: the Doña Rosa . Ana Castro, the New Orleans–based chef-owner of Acamaya, is also a huge fan. “They are the real deal; they are made in Mexico by Doña Rosa, she’s a master of her craft and has been producing them for longer than I have been alive,” Castro said. Plus, she appreciates that with the Doña Rosa , unlike the traditional circular cast-iron models, you can adjust the thickness of the tortilla that you’re serving. “This tortilla press is the last one you’ll ever buy,” Castro said.

It’s also the press that Chef Fermín Núñez uses in his masa-centric restaurants in Austin. “Masienda’s Doña Rosa Tortilla Press is what we use at both of our restaurants, Suerte and Este, to make fresh corn tortillas daily,” Nunez explained. “A good tortilla press should be high quality and have some weight to it. Masienda’s has both, which is exactly why we use theirs in the restaurants.”

When I got my hands on a Doña Rosa press to try it out, I had to agree. (I chose the seafoam-green one.) Though I am far from a master at making tortillas, the Doña Rosa tortilla press was a joy to use. It’s sturdy enough that I never worry about it slipping on the counter, and it quickly and evenly flattens masa into discs. The adjustable-thickness option makes it particularly versatile for use with other flatbreads, too. And it’s a pleasing object to have in my kitchen — always at the ready, reminding me that fresh tortillas aren’t that far away.

Rooftops view of Turin on a sunny winter day.

My four-day rail and ferry adventure from the UK to Albania

From London to Tirana, via Chambéry’s medieval streets, bustling Bari and Albania’s dynamic capital, this trip across Europe has treats at every turn

M y overriding memories of crossing countries by train, on a trip from London to Albania, are of half-empty carriages and countryside sweeping past windows bathed in the soft orange glow of sunset. I remember cypress trees, red-roofed villages with square churches, farmland in neat strips and row upon row of vineyards.

On my London-Paris-Chambéry-Turin-Bari-Tirana journey over land and sea, there was, for long stretches, little to do. The wifi was patchy. It took a while to adapt to having so much time to simply watch the world go by, travelling through landscapes without having to navigate them.

The biggest stress happened long before I set off, when a landslide not far from the French border with Italy blocked the rail line between Chambéry and Turin, forcing a closure that continues today. Byway, the no-fly operator I had booked with, offered to reroute me through Nice and on to Turin via the Vermenagna valley (with changes in Tende and Cuneo), or book me on the FlixBus service over part of the Mont Blanc massif. I was keen to see Chambéry and the Alps, so I chose the bus.

The writer leans out of the train door. She is wearing a long denim coat and sandals and looks excited.

People seemed surprised when I told them I was travelling overland to Albania. As I gushed about the romance of slow travel by train and sleeper ferry, and my excitement about Tirana, I got comments about being “brave”. I didn’t feel especially brave: all the planning, tickets and hotel bookings were done for me, and friendly help was a WhatsApp call away if needed.

I just had to download the Rail Planner app for my Interrail pass and make sure I was at the right station at the right time (Turin was the biggest challenge: it has four main railway stations and taxis scream between them bearing anxious-looking passengers).

The entire journey took four days. If I did it all again, I’d stay longer in Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot – and remember to buy my Paris Métro ticket from the cafe on the Eurostar.

Day one: London to Chamb éry

A street with pale pink classical buildings and a statue on a plinth.

First to Paris’s Gare du Nord, then the metro to Gare de Lyon, where I make a beeline for a cafe opposite the station. Noise pervades the pavement tables of Café Terminus, but the cacophony is delightful – an atmospheric place for a citron pressé .

I’m in plenty of time for the train to Chambéry and, excitingly, am on the upper deck. Soon, we break free from the suburbs to trace huge stands of forest. Beyond Lyon begins a ripple of hills, lazy rivers and thickly forested slopes. As evening approaches, it’s all Alpine scenery. I arrive at an almost-empty station and walk to the boutique Hotel des Princes in Chambéry’s old town.

Chambéry has an Italian feel – it was the seat of the House of Savoy before the dynasty moved on to Turin – and its medieval alleys, cathedral and pastel-coloured townhouses are quietly impressive. The 1838 Fontaine des Éléphants sits in the middle of the closest square to the old town, and peeking from the end of every street are the Bauges and Chartreuse mountain ranges. My stay is peaceful and easy.

Day two: Chamb éry to Turin

Misty blue mountain silhouettes.

From Chambéry, the train to Turin would take about 2½ hours, but the bus takes double this. I’m on the top deck again, which is worth it for the sight of misty fingers of early morning light breaking across the mountain ridge. Snoozing backpackers rouse themselves to snap pictures of remote Mont Blanc peaks, before slumbering once more through the tunnel to Italy. In Turin there’s perfume in the air from the blossom-covered trees.

Turin’s grid of long, straight boulevards is testament to its development by the Romans – the redbrick Palatine Gate is another Roman relic – and its grand piazzas, royal palaces and graffitied colonnades date from the city’s Savoy heyday in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, the number one attraction is the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum).

My favourite moments? Ricotta and fig ice-cream on Piazza San Carlo, an aperitivo on off-the-beaten-path Via Sant’Agostino and the towering neoclassical Mole Antonelliana (national museum of cinema). I eat Turin’s famous doughy pizza al padellino (pan pizza) and spend a comfortable night in the eaves of Hotel Urbani in 19th-century residential streets close to the grand Porta Nuova train station.

Day three: Turin to Bari

A rolling mountain range with cumulus clouds in the sky.

The views from my next train are of cinematic Tuscan scenes. Scorched fields, vines and Italian cypress trees. Neat red roofs and shabby-chic farmhouses. Fluffy clouds cling to hills that Google Maps tells me are the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. After hours of soothing golden landscapes, the opal-blue Adriatic wallops into view just north of Ancona. Beach bars whip by and cypress trees are replaced with palm trees: I’ve arrived in the south of Italy.

Bari is hands down my favourite stop. The noise, heat and energy as we step off the train in the early evening are joyous. After Chambéry and Turin, Bari feels brash, a little rough around the edges even; a proper port city. The labyrinthine alleyways of the whitewashed old town are almost cliched in their cuteness. Despite the troupes of tightly packed headphone-wearing Americans following guided tours, it somehow manages to retain a tranquil atmosphere.

An elegant old building presides over the port, with its little fishing boats, on a sunny day.

Old ladies yawn from the shade as tourists surreptitiously snap pictures and laundry flutters from balconies. I could stay for ever, but after 24 hours (which includes a lot of pasta, a stroll along the posh promenade to the not-so-posh city beach and a night in an elegant aparthotel, Residence Zodiacus , halfway between the station and the old town), it’s time to board the night ferry to Albania.

Day (and night) four: Bari to Tirana

The mosque is lit in evening sunlight, with mountains in the background.

I arrive at the ferry on foot and am escorted through the car deck to jokes about going in the wrong direction (to Albania, instead of from it). In the early morning I spot a pink sky through the cracked window of my comfy en suite cabin, and head to the top deck to see the sun rise over the distant outline of Albania. Disembarking in the port of Durrës is a bit of a scrum and there’s a bus to the capital waiting, but I opt instead for a five-minute taxi ride to the centre of town and breakfast of pastries and espresso on a dazzling white road lined with boutiques and palm trees. I later regret this though, as the aircon on the grubby public bus I eventually take to Tirana is more tired than I am, and drops me in an urban sprawl miles from the centre.

Tirana itself is a revelation. My hotel, Padam Boutique , is a grand villa with handsome rooms and floor-to-ceiling windows, and there’s striking new skyward architecture on every nearby street. A short stroll away is the landmark Pyramid of Tirana , which stands as a symbol and monument to change (and is fun to climb at sunset). Skanderbeg Square – a jumble of buildings erected on a roundabout at the time of the celebrations to mark the fall of communism in 1992 – is now a pedestrianised, glossy public space. There are nods to Albania’s recent, wretched history behind the iron curtain, of course – the Bunk’Art and Bunk’Art 2 museums, in nuclear bunkers are unmissable – but Tirana and the country are more than just the last century. My journey is done, but it feels like Tirana is just getting into its stride.

The trip was provided by Byway , which offers sustainable travel and accommodation packages across the UK and Europe. Its Alps to Albania trip costs from £679pp
