Rare sighting of Risso’s dolphins off Big Island leave tour guides in awe

Hawaiian Adventures Kona tour boat was on the water for about an hour before the crew made a sighting offshore of the Big Island that left them excited and in disbelief.

At about 9:45 a.m. on April 17, the crew along with 26 guests aboard a 46-foot catamaran, spotted a pod of six Risso’s dolphins about 10 miles offshore. Capt. Andrew Aggergaard and crew member Olivia Miller said this was the first time seeing these animals during their years working in Kona waters.

Miller said it took her a couple of minutes to figure out what the species was as they were still far away from them.

“When I saw their characteristic white heads I immediately yelled up at the captain,” Miller said.

Employed as a naturalist, Miller educates guests about wildlife along the Kona Coast during the tours. She said Risso’s are not typically seen near Hawai‘i’s coastline as they spend their time in deep water. She said: “They are more open ocean creatures.”

Risso’s dolphins are the fourth largest dolphin in Hawaiian waters and are distinguishable by their unique coloration and large dorsal fin.

While most of the guests were unfamiliar with this dolphin species, Miller said they got excited when they saw the crew’s reaction.

“I think they understood the gravity of the sighting,” Miller said, who has spent four years working offshore in Hawai‘i.

One of the few tour companies that focus on whale and dolphin watching year-round, Miller said they’ve recently seen sperm whales and pilot whales, which are residents of the Kona Coast. The crew has also seen rough-toothed dolphins and pan-tropical spotted dolphins.

Wednesday was a perfect day to spot wildlife as the ocean was calm and skies were clear.

Miller said she gets excited to see new wildlife all the time. “I actually said ‘I’d love to see Risso’s this year,’ and saw them two days later.”

The pod cruised along with the catamaran, known as Artemis, allowing those aboard to snap photos of the rare sighting.

1. Visit Honolulu’s Many Kid-Friendly Attractions

Honolulu is a bustling city with many family-friendly oceanfront resorts and attractions like the Honolulu Zoo , Waikiki Aquarium , Bishop Museum and Pearl Harbor . Plus, famous Waikiki Beach is one of the best places to learn to surf and paddle board.

2. Learn About Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is the site of WWII’s 1941 bombing attack and home to the USS Arizona Memorial . Tickets for the 75-minute USS Arizona Memorial program are free. However, there’s a limited number available each day.

The program includes a short video (with actual attack footage) and a round-trip boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, located above the remains of the sunken ship. The ship is the final resting place for more than 1,000 men.

Since Pearl Harbor is one of Oahu’s top attractions, it’s strongly recommended that visitors make advanced reservations online at www.recreation.gov .

3. Hike on Diamond Head

There aren’t many places in the world where you can walk along a trail to the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater, but Diamond Head is one of them. A hiking trail leads to the summit for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.

4. Snorkel at Hanauma Bay National Preserve

Located on the side of Koko Head, Hanauma Bay is about a 30-minute drive from Honolulu. With beautiful blue waters, Hanauma Bay is a great place to snorkel and see its 400 species of tropical fish and abundance of green sea turtles.

5. Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center features six island villages representing Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji and Aotearoa (New Zealand). At this Polynesian-themed park and living museum, you can learn about various traditions through interactive and hands-on activities. For example, learn to throw a wooden spear, paddle a canoe and cook like a Polynesian.

The center also has family-friendly luaus with a variety of traditional food like lomilomi salmon, chicken long rice and kalua pork. Note that no alcohol is served at this luau.

6. Book Exciting Adventures at Kualoa Ranch

The family-owned Kualoa Ranch offers many different types of tours sure to thrill adults and kids of all ages. Adventures include horseback riding, jungle expeditions, beach outings and visits to Hawaiian fish ponds.

7. Watch Surfers on the North Shore

The North Shore is the rustic and laid-back side of the island with legendary surf beaches and food trucks serving fresh fish tacos, shrimp and more. Take a surf lesson at Hans Hedemann Surf School or just watch the pros. Laniakea Beach is one of the best spots to see sea turtles sunbathing.

8. Eat Shave Ice in Haleiwa

This little surf town is home to boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find Matsumoto Shave Ice – one of the best places to enjoy the snow cone-style treat.

9. Take a snorkel cruise to Molokini Crater

11. Spend a day on Haleakala

A dormant volcano, Haleakala sits at 10,023 feet above sea level. Catch a sunrise or sunset from the summit. Daytime views are also stunning. Note that it can be chilly at the top, so bring sweaters for everyone.

Don’t rush off the mountain without visiting two unique farms. At the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, you can walk through lavender fields. Nearby, the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm produces award-winning cheeses. On the kid-friendly tours, you’ll feed goats and sample cheese.

12. Drive on the Road to Hana

Pack the car with snacks and drinks for an incredible road trip. Get an early start to beat the crowds on this popular drive. The drive is just 52 miles long. But with 620 curves and 59 narrow bridges, it can take a few hours. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls, black sand beaches and the charming town of Hana.

Kauai’s mountains and valleys are lush and green, flowing with waterfalls and rivers that are ideal for paddle boarding and kayaking. Other places to visit include Waimea Canyon, Poipu Beach and Hanalei Bay.

13. Horseback Riding at Princeville Ranch

Located on Kauai’s North Shore, Princeville Ranch is one of Hawaii’s oldest cattle ranches. Horseback riding lessons are available for ages 4 and older.

14. Book Ziplining and Mountain Tubing Tours

Kauai Backcountry Adventures  offers the best family activities for an adrenaline rush. On the mountain tubing tours you’ll float down an old sugar plantation irrigation system, through open canals and through several tunnels hand-dug circa 1870.

Hawaii Island (Big Island)

Hawaii Island, also called the Big Island of Hawaii, has an array of diverse outdoor adventures suitable for the whole family. 17. Visit Akaka Falls State Park

Located along the northeastern Hilo Coast, Akaka Falls State Park is the site of two waterfalls on one short hike. Follow a footpath through a rainforest to see the 100-foot Kahuna Falls and the towering Akaka Falls . This is a lovely outing for kids of all ages.

18. Shop at the Hilo Farmers Market

The Hilo Farmers Market  features over 200 vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, Big Island food products, tropical flowers and handmade craft items. It’s a great place to shop for picnic items to bring to the beach or back to your hotel.

19. Snorkel in Sunny Kona

The sunny Kona district is great for beach activities like snorkeling , paddle boarding and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles). Best Napali Coast Boat Tours

Price: Adults from $210; kids from $190 Duration: 3.5 hours

If a sunset sail is at the top of your Hawaii to-do list, consider this cruise. Aboard the company's 65-foot catamaran, you'll be treated to views of a sunset, rocky cliffs, sea caves and local sea life while gliding along the Napali Coast . Cruises are limited to 49 passengers. The tour also includes a hot dinner, as well as mai tais, beer and wine. Tourgoers describe the crew as exceptional and say the views are fabulous. Amazing day!!! High seas closed part of Nā Pali coast at the last minute but these guys got up early and scouted out an alternate and probably even more amazing trip for us. We have toured the Na Pali coast several ways (top of Waimea Canyon, a sunset cruise from the west side, powered hang gliders when they were operating) and this experience outdid them all. Captain Lance and Crewman Miguel gave an astounding tour, complete with wildlife sitings, great history and information, and wonderful snorkeling with the turtles. We could tell Capt. Lance loves the sea and is very knowledgeable about ocean conditions. He was able to take us into three sea caves safely. We had a delightful afternoon. We highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Kauai. Totally worth the time and money.

"The 35’ Deluxe Catamaran “Cadillac of the Caves” was AMAZING! Do not miss this when you’re in Kauai. Brian and Capt. Nate were fun, kind, knowledgeable, patient…all the things. They personally made sure every single person was comfortable and having fun the whole time. They shared tons of knowledge about Kauai and the Napali coast, played music, made us laugh, and were obviously capable and at ease on the ocean. The deluxe catamaran was big enough to be comfortable, but small enough to fit in caves and be an exciting ride. My husband and 7 year old sat in bench seats in the middle of the boat, while my 10 year old and I rode up front for a more exciting ride. We stopped to snorkel and they provided good equipment. They also put out snacks and drinks while we were in the water. They made sure everyone had enough time in the water and didn’t feel rushed back. Our family all took Dramamine the night before and again about an hour before we got on the boat, and we all felt fine the whole time. Do take similar precautions if you’re at all worried about sea sickness. I cannot recommend this company and experience highly enough. It was one of my favorite days ever! It was the experience of a lifetime to take in the gorgeous scenery in such a fun and exciting way. The experience and memories are worth the price. Book it!

We got up close and personal - but not too close - to about 5 green sea turtles. The two spots we visited were great, the 1st was a hangout for turtles and the 2nd a reef closer to shore schooling with fish... About the Niihau Boat Tour

Holoholo is Kauai’s largest and fastest catamaran. She is 65 feet long and wide enough to offer plenty of comfortable seating and space for you and your belongings. Designed for agility and passenger comfort, it will give you a fast, adventurous ride even at her top speeds. You’ll get to the fun faster for sure!

Built for your safety and comfort, Holoholo has two entry points for snorkelers, a shaded cabin with a large bar area, and two forward nets for sunbathing and relaxing. Licensed to carry 65 passengers, we never take more than 49, so you’ll have plenty of room to sightsee, snorkel, relax, and enjoy.

Holo Holo Charters isn’t the only Kauai company that offers Niihau boat tours, but we were the first! When our company was founded in 1997, boat tours to Niihau were to be our niche—nobody else was doing it. But a unique tour would require a unique boat and that’s why Holoholo has always stood out on the dock.

Anyone with an appreciation for boat design will tell you, Holo’s got “nice lines.” At 65’ long, 24’ wide, and with twin Cummins QSB diesel engines, Holoholo is Kauai’s most spacious and fastest cruising catamaran. Her long, skinny hulls and low center of gravity mean she cuts through the water with speed and stability. Over the years, Holoholo has been scrupulously maintained, frequently updated, and remains the best-looking, most comfortable, and safest tour vessel on all of Kauai. We’ll kickstart the journey with coffee, tea, juices, and a continental breakfast (eggs, fruit, pastries, and oatmeal) as we cruise out of Port Allen in the sunrise. Your captain will share stories, local history, and legends as we pass Kauai’s west side and get into the world-famous Napali Coast. What you’ve heard is true– Napali is like music for the eyes, and she will absolutely blow your mind with her dramatic cliffs, emerald valleys, cascading waterfalls, vibrant rainbows, spinner dolphins, turtles, and, depending on the time of year, humpback whales. Make sure your phone is fully charged because you might break your camera!

When we’ve reached the northern edge of Napali and we’re all feeling humbled and amazed by nature’s glory, it’s time to start the next phase of the adventure! It’s time to rip across Kaulakahi Channel to the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau and her neighbor to the north, Lehua Crater. Luckily Holoholo cruises comfortably at around 27mph so crossing the channel should take less than an hour.

We’ll poke around these two remote islands, talk some story about Niihau’s fascinating past and present, notice Lehua’s thousands of nesting seabirds, check out her unique geological formation “Keyhole Cave” and then, we’ll find a great spot to stop, snorkel and lunch.

One thing about Niihau and Lehua is that they’re very dry. The lack of rain or running water around these islands (in addition to the lack of any significant commercial activity) makes for water that’s exceptionally clear; visibility is commonly 70 feet or more! Niihau/Lehua is considered one of Hawaii’s very best snorkeling destinations and for that reason, we get a lot of repeat customers (including Kauai locals) on this Niihau snorkeling tour.

Seasoned divers and beginning snorkelers alike will be impressed with the underwater lava formations, bright colorful fish species, monk seals, manta rays, and more. Of course, we have all of the gear you need—masks, snorkels, fins, flotation devices—and we’ll show you how to use it. We’ll have trained crew members in the water with you, on a surfboard, keeping a close eye out for anyone that’s struggling or drifting too far off from the group. Your safety is our #1 concern, from the time we leave the dock until we return.

And hey, if snorkeling isn’t your thing, just kick back and relax. Shoot the breeze, read a book, get some sun, take a nap. Whatever makes you happy. Whatever…. floats your boat?

When we’re all snorkeled out and every single person is safely back on board, it’s lunchtime and we’ll serve up some freshly made lunch provided by our amazing caterers who specialize in creative, local flavors. This is also the time of day (5:00 somewhere?) that we can offer our customers 21+ years old a refreshing adult beverage. We’ve got a nice selection of beers, wines, and seltzers, and the bar’s open all the way back to Port Allen!
