James Bond Island Tour

Price per group

Free Cancellation up until 4:00pm the day before this trip!

The James Bond Island tour takes place in the amazing Phangna Bay. The Island that gives the tour its James Bond name is actually called Ko Tapu and is a 20 metre high rock formation that was used as the backdrop to some scenes in the movie, "The man with the Golden Gun".

This movie, despite being shot nearly forty years ago in 1974, is still drawing many people to Phangna Bay.

The Area, being a National Park is still just as beautiful and has hardly changed in all those years. (see the picture's one was taken this year and the other (the one with Roger Moore and Christopher Lee looking rather young) was from 1974.

There are several other Islands in the bay, Khao Phing Kan, which is actually two Islands being the main ones.

The tour takes you for a trip around the bay and gives you some time on the beach to enjoy the perfect water and white sand beach.

You also get some time canoing if you like, the canoeing is in inflateable canoes and a paddler is included in the price, so you can just sit back and relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery. The canoing is around the mangroves and into some of the caves. Depending on the tide height on the day it may be possible to paddle right through a cave that passes under one of the mountains.

Although the paddler is included in the price, they will expect a tip, we don't really like that they ask for tips but, there is very little we can do to control this. We would suggest that as long as they were polite and did their job, then a small tip is appropriate. Feel free not to tip if they were not polite or in some other way did not provide good service.

Then its time for lunch at the colourful Floating Village. Lunch is provided in a dining hall type of place, the food is nothing special but more than adequate. There is usually a good choice including options for Halal and vegetarian and seasonal fresh fruit is provided. Drinking water is pentifukl and other drinks can be purchased at normal prices.

After lunch, you get a minibus to Suwankuha Temple, otherwise known as The Monkey Temple. (I think you can guess why...) The Temple is a remarkable place, and once you have got through the tribe of monkeys on the outside, its a wonderfully quiet and serene place built inside a complex of caves. The whole place is decorated with stalagtites and stalagmites and has some very beutiful Buddhas. The feel of these cavernous spaces set deep into the cliffs has a real aura of peace and tranquility and its easy to see why it was made into a temple. Deep inside the cave there are steps deep into the cave, please do be careful as the steps can be a bit slippy.

All in all, this is a really fun full days outing.

James Bond Island Kayaking Tour by Longtail Boat from Krabi

In the footsteps of roger moore.

James Bond Island Kayaking Tour by Longtail Boat from Krabi

  • Visit Wat Suwan Kuha Temple also known as Monkey Temple
  • Cruise through Phang Nga Bay by traditional longtail boat
  • Canoe among the limestone karst rocks of Thalu Island
  • Lunch at Koh Panyee floating village, a Muslim community
  • Stop at Raman Waterfalls offering a rich flora and fauna

What can you expect

Following a pick-up service from your hotel in Krabi, transfer to Phang Nga Bay by air-conditioned minivan to discover the famous filming locations of “The Man With the Golden Gun” in Phang Nga Bay.

Climb aboard a traditional longtail boat at Tadan Pier near Phang Nga Town and voyage over to James Bond Island.

Phang Nga Bay found its way onto the tourist map through its starring role in the James Bond movie starring Roger Moore as 007, and is distinctive for its sheer limestone cliffs that jut vertically out of the crystal emerald-green water.

Discover the famous Khao Phing Kan, a very high leaning rock with tiny caves, where you can find stalls selling souvenirs mostly made from beautiful shells and wood. Walk around the James Bond Island and take a photo of Koh Tapu (also known as Nail Island or Spike Island). The limestone rock is around 20 meters tall with a diameter ranging from about 4 meters at the bottom and up to 8 meters at the top (hence the name of nail island).

Continue to Thalu Island, where you can take a guided kayak tour along the mangrove river and the giant stalactites caves & limestone cliffs.

Panyee floating village is where you will stop for lunch. The natural island of Panyee is a towering vertical mass of limestone. Nearly all of the village sits atop a huge network of stilts that clings to the edge of the island’s coastline and stretches out over the sea in a maze of raised platforms and walkways.

Cruise slowly back to the pier and make a last stop at Wat Suwan Kuha Temple, also known as “Monkey Cave,” and at Raman Waterfalls. Here you can take a swim and relax with an abundance of flora and fauna such as monkeys, deers, squirrels and birds. Note that accessibility may vary depending on water levels and schedule.

Conclude your tour back in your centrally located hotel where you can make a great conclusion to an unforgettable day.

James Bond Island Thailand: Day Trip To Phang Nga Bay

Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay is loaded with exotic island scenery, and one of the best things to see in the bay would have to be the famous James Bond Island, with its unusual balanced rock.

Also known as Nail Island or ‘Ko Ta Pu’ in the Thai language, James Bond Island got its current nickname when the location was featured in the 1974 Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun.’

Nowadays, Phang Nga Bay is a national park in Thailand where you can go kayaking and see dozens of amazing islands with caves, mangroves, wildlife, and even a floating village called Koh Panyee.

It’s easy to visit Phang Nga Bay on a day trip (by boat) from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak, and that gives you enough time to see James Bond Island and the other main sights in the bay.

This travel guide for Phang Nga Bay will explain how to get there, top things to see and do, best tour packages to use, where to stay, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Best Phang Nga Bay Tour Packages

The only way to visit James Bond Island is with a tour, and GetYourGuide has prearranged day tours from Phuket or similar day trips from Khao Lak or Krabi , complete with hotel transfers, boat ride, lunch, shared tour of the islands, and same day return.

These day tours visit all of the top sights in Phang Nga Bay, including James Bond Island, Hong island, and the Koh Panyee floating village, and you can also use a canoe or kayak to explore some of the limestone caves up close.

They also have private tours or semi-private tours if you prefer that, although the prices are higher. We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Book Now: James Bond Island Tour From Phuket / Khao Lak / Krabi

Where Is James Bond Island?

James Bond Island is located in Phang Nga Bay, in southern Thailand.

There’s no airport, hotels, or accommodation in the bay since it’s a national park, but you can easily visit from other places in Thailand.

How To Get To James Bond Island Thailand

The only way to get to James Bond Island is to book a tour of Phang Nga Bay by boat. You can choose between a Thai longtail boat, big wooden boat, or speedboat, and any of these are good options.

The speedboat is fastest and you’re usually in a smaller and more private tour group, but it costs more. We’ve done the James Bond Island tour with all kinds of boats, and always had a good experience with each of them.

The closest place to fly for this is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these airports have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to James Bond Island daily from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak, and they usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. Again, we recommend GetYourGuide for their shared or private tours !

The boat journey through Phang Nga Bay is stunning in its own right, with dozens of rocky islands rising out of the sea in all directions. However, one of the best parts of the trip is kayaking through the limestone caves. It’s probably one of the most amazing kayaking experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world!

Visiting James Bond Island: What To Expect

When you first arrive at James Bond Island, the boat will park on the back side of the main island (Khao Phing Kan) and then you can disembark and walk around on the island for awhile.

Khao Phing Kan is a very unusual island covered with limestone hills, and the main attraction is the pointy balanced rock, which seems to float on the sea. Unlike other places in Thailand, the snorkeling isn’t any good at Phang Nga Bay because the water is murky and there’s no coral.

However, if you’re lucky, you still might see some wildlife here. We saw a hawk flying around, and later on we spotted a baby monitor lizard near the beach. We took a few pictures of him before he climbed a tree and disappeared.

Most Phang Nga tour packages give you 1 hour at James Bond Island, which is plenty of time to swim at the beach, see the famous floating rock, and attempt your best James Bond pose for photos.

Ko Ta Pu

The floating rock — Ko Ta Pu — also known as Nail Island

Of course, because of its scenery, James Bond Island has become one of the most famous spots in Thailand, so it’s very crowded with tourists at most times of the day unless you arrive early in the morning.

There are a bunch of makeshift souvenir stalls on the island taking advantage of this, but the prices are a bit higher than normal so it’s not a good idea to do any shopping here.

If you want to escape the crowds and take some nice pictures, you can walk up the concrete steps and there are usually less people at the viewpoints above the rock, while the area close to the beach always tends to be the busiest and most crowded part of the island.

James Bond Island was popularized and got its current nickname after being featured as the villain’s hideout in the 1974 Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun.’ The movie bombed with critics, but the location became a hit.

In spite of the crowds, we were happy to see that the island has been kept pretty clean, and we didn’t notice any garbage on the ground or in the water. Overall, it’s an amazing place and you have to see it at least once!

Visiting Phang Nga Bay – Tourist Fees

The Phang Nga Bay is a national park in Thailand, so they charge a tourist fee of 300 Baht (~$9 USD) for adults, and 150 baht for kids 3-14 years old.

Some Phang Nga Bay tours may already include these fees in the total price when you book, but usually you pay them separately in cash when you first start the tour, or else when you get off the boat at James Bond Island.

More Things To See In Phang Nga Bay

Here’s a list of some of the top sights in Phang Nga Bay. You can see most of these places (along with James Bond Island) in a single day tour:

  • Koh Hong Island: Not to be confused with the Koh Hong island in the Krabi province, this is a beautiful island in Phang Nga with a sandy beach and several limestone caves that you can explore by kayak. It’s one of the most spectacular kayaking spots in Thailand, so don’t miss it!
  • Koh Phanak Island: Another big limestone island with several caves, including the Bat Cave and Ice Cream Cave, which got its name from the bright white stalactite rocks inside. You can also see mangroves and wild monkeys here.
  • Koh Panyee Floating Village: A very interesting little fishing village with a population of about 1,700 people. This floating village was founded about 200 years ago by Malay muslims, and the spot often serves as a lunch stop on James Bond boat tours.
  • Samet Nangshe Viewpoint : This amazing viewpoint is technically located outside of the national park, and you can only visit it by land (not on the James Bond boat tour). However, it has jaw dropping views of Phang Nga Bay, along with its many mangroves and islands. It’s one of the best views I’ve seen anywhere in the world, and the sunrise is also impressive. I wrote a separate travel guide for this viewpoint, which you can read here !

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint Phang Nga Bay

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint can only be reached by land (not on the James Bond boat tour), but it has incredible views of Phang Nga Bay.

1-Day Itinerary For The James Bond Island Tour

Here’s a sample itinerary for what the James Bond Island tour generally looks like:

  • 7:30 AM – Hotel pickup and drive to the pier by bus or minivan
  • 8:30 AM – Transfer to boat and start the journey to Phang Nga Bay
  • 9:30 AM – Start sightseeing in Phang Nga Bay
  • 12:00 PM – Lunch at the boat or on the floating village (Koh Panyee)
  • 1:00 PM – More sightseeing in Phang Nga Bay
  • 5:00 PM – Arrive at the pier and transfer back to your hotel by bus or minivan

Keep in mind every tour is different, so your schedule may not follow this exactly. You can check with your tour provider about the itinerary before you go.

Is James Bond Island Open / Closed?

Yes, James Bond Island is OPEN for tourists as of 2024!

The Thai government likes to close some of their islands for conservation during the rainy season, but Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island generally stays open all year.

Best Time To Visit James Bond Island Thailand

Any time is good to visit James Bond Island, although there are some seasonal differences.

The weather in the Andaman Sea area of Thailand (including Phang Nga Bay) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s a bit more crowded with day tours.

The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip.

It’s very unusual for boat tours to be canceled at James Bond Island because it’s inside of a large bay that protects it from rough waves coming from the sea.

We witnessed some big storms in the rainy season, but these were usually in the evenings when we were back at our hotel, so it wasn’t a problem. Most of the pictures in this James Bond Island travel guide were actually taken in July, during the rainy season.

We’ve visited Phang Nga Bay in the dry season and also in the rainy season, on separate trips. In both cases, we had an amazing time and the weather was mostly great for weeks.

So in conclusion, there’s really no bad time to visit James Bond Island!

One of our first times visiting James Bond Island Thailand!

What To Bring To Phang Nga Bay

Here are some packing suggestions for your visit to James Bond Island Thailand:

  • Waterproof Bag . Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats around Ko Ta Pu and Koh Hong island. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch . Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Sunscreen. There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach at Ko Ta Pu, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
  • Snacks & Drinks. You might want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat when touring the islands. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi. There are also snacks and drinks available to buy in the national park, but the prices are higher.

James Bond Island Thailand Phang Nga Bay Tour Phuket Krabi Drone

See the tiny boat in the bottom left corner?

Can You Fly A Drone At Phang Nga Bay?

Yes and no. Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but you aren’t allowed to fly in the national parks.

That includes James Bond Island, which is patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict there, and the rangers are watching all areas of the island constantly.

However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations in or near the bay. The best place to do this is at the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint , which has great visibility of Phang Nga Bay. You’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Other Tips For Phang Nga Bay

  • Bathrooms: There are bathrooms on James Bond Island, although you may have to pay a small fee in Thai baht (bring some cash for that). If you book the tour with a big wooden boat, those also have toilets in the boat, although the Thai longtail boats and speedboats usually do not.
  • Cell Service: We had good phone reception on the boat while touring all over Phang Nga Bay, but you may lose signal when you go ashore on James Bond Island because of the steep mountains surrounding Ko Ta Pu.
  • Mosquitoes: We didn’t really see any mosquitoes in Phang Nga Bay or James Bond Island, but you can buy bug repellent in Phuket, Krabi, or other places in Thailand if you want it. Malaria isn’t present in this area.

Phi Phi Or James Bond Island: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island? That’s an important question.

They’re both great, but I have to say Phi Phi island is better. No offense to James Bond island, but Phi Phi has the best scenery above and below the ocean, with clear blue water and lots of fish and coral to see while snorkeling or scuba diving.

There’s also more to see and do in Phi Phi overall. Even if you don’t care about snorkeling, it’s hard to beat Maya Bay , Pileh Lagoon, and the other epic sights in the Phi Phi islands. They are truly world class.

Don’t get me wrong, Phang Nga Bay is still amazing and you should definitely see James Bond island if you’re able. Try to see both Phi Phi and James Bond if you have time! Unfortunately you can’t see them both in one day since they’re located in opposite directions from Phuket (north vs south), but it’s possible to see both places in two days!

Is James Bond Island Worth It?

Yes, James Bond Island is absolutely worth it in my book! There is loads of amazing scenery in Phang Nga Bay, and the prices for everything are very affordable.

In spite of the crowds, this is still one of the best day trips in Thailand, and it’s very accessible because of its location between Phuket and Krabi.

James Bond Island tour

Last updated on 30 March 2018 by Your Krabi

Technically located in Phang Nga province to the north of Krabi, we include information about this trip (which can be done in a day from Krabi) as it is so popular – 007 and Bond Girl wannabes are clearly more common than we thought! Although The Man With The Golden Gun was released way back in 1974, you can still see plenty of people making like Roger Moore and Christopher Lee in front of the tiny rock of Khao Tapu, that served as Scaramanga’s hideout in the movie.

There is short trail around the island, which is worth exploring, There are a couple of small beaches, as well as incredible views from the look out points on the rocks. The entrance to Scaramanga’s lair in the movie was constructed in the passage of Khao Ping Gan, a massive slab of rock that broke off from and now leans against the cliff.

The crowds and rows of souvenir stands may tarnish the experience somewhat, but the trip is nonetheless interesting, especially if you consider the other things on the itinerary, not least the wonderful cruise through Phang Nga Bay, which has some of the most astonishing scenery in the world.

You will also visit the floating fishing village at Koh Panyi. There is a row of seafood restaurants seating hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists along the main pier where you will likely alight. After lunch, escape the endless souvenir stalls that have set up nearby (unless of course you really want to buy a shell wind-chime) and duck out towards the school and floating football pitch, directly behind. Here it is quieter and you can get a better sense of how the village lives outside of tour group hours.

Koh Phanyi, the floating village in Phang Nga

The tour – which should really be called a “Phang Nga” trip – can also be combined with other activities, such as a short kayak paddle through the mangroves.

Do note that it is a long drive from Krabi which, combined with picking up / dropping passengers off around various hotels on the group tours, can add up to a good 3 – 4 hours sitting in the minivan. There is no snorkelling or swimming available either as the water in the bay is rather murky – at low tide you will see exposed mud flats.

If you would like to take photographs beyond the usual selfies, we would highly recommend going it alone. Rent a car or take a taxi and go very early or late in the day to avoid the crowds – which come from both Krabi and Phuket – and charter a private longtail boat from the pier in Phang Nga. The boat + driver for the same itinerary costs 1500 baht for the 2 – 3 hour round trip; there is a 300 baht entry fee payable at James Bond itself (normally included on the group tours).

This is also a good side trip if travelling from Krabi to Phuket (or vice versa) as the pier is only a few kilometres from the main highway.

JAMES BOND ISLAND TOURS

The itinerary for the organised James Bond Island tour, as well as the guide price, can be seen below. Contact a travel agent on site in Krabi for booking; they will also be able to sell add-ons such as elephant trekking or any other combinations they have on offer – though do note the caveats we list above.

  • 1 James Bond Island Stop: 8 hours - Admission included This is the tour program that will bring all participants to the true nature and the island within the Phang Nga Bay. The interesting place is the Tapu island (JAMES BOND ISLAND) and Panyee island. The Tapu island or “James Bond Island” is the giant standing rock sitting in the middle of the sea at the area of the front bay near to the Pingkan mountain. Looking from the far, this rock looks like a giant nail, nailing deep into the seawater. This Tapu island is the very famous tourist spot in Phang Nga. Its beauty brought the Hollywood to film their James Bond movie. The Man with the Golden Gun episode here. That is why it got the nickname of “James Bond Island”, where draws in several tours. Another tourist spot here is the Panyee island or floating village. In this island has many houses laying in the sea where has a small land area is used for building the mosque and graveyards. The islanders are mostly Muslim and build their villages here. The frontal area is the Limestone cliff above the sea. The villagers are fishermen who also sell souvenirs and open many restaurants in this island. This is one of the most famous tourist spot in the world that many tourist come to visit. In addition to the Tapu island and the Panyee island, there are many interesting spots for tourist in Phang Nga Bay such as Maju mountain, grotto , Panag island, Hong island and Pingkan island. However, the cruise along the Tapu island has been enforcing some restrictions from the official government. They prohibit the tourists to look too closely at the island because the sunk part of this island is very old where eroded for ages. This eroding rock may cause accident at any point in time. • Giovanni F 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles The worst experience of my holiday We were picked up at the hotel by a driver who didn't say a word for more than an hour, when we arrived at the group meeting point we waited another hour before we could finally start our excursion, the boat was packed with not even a seat to sit and very uncomfortable, our guide BOY gave incorrect information throughout the entire tour and spoke very bad English, lunch was pitiful and the bathrooms were impracticable, in all the places where we were there were only people and water polluted by hundreds of boats . I strongly advise against this excursion especially for families with children. Read more Written April 13, 2024

  • angelasK6798OH 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Don’t bother. Our tour guide Lisa picked us up on time and we travelled to another hotel where we had to wait 55 minutes for her to find two other people that were late for collection. When asked how long we need to wait all she told us was not long. We then had to smell their drug habit for the rest of the two hour journey. The drive there should be the reason they say no back or neck problems as the driver didn’t slow down for any road bumps or uneven surfaces. 3 hours in a very uncomfortable mini bus. Lisa can across very rude when asked about how long we needed to wait for the missing guests and her response was this isn’t a private tour. We knew this however didn’t think sitting outside a hotel for 55 minutes was acceptable. The monkey temple we loved. The bamboo seemed unorganised and our family of 5 were split up on different rafts. Also we were asked several times for a tip that we felt we had to tip when getting of the raft. Lunch was nice and then we walked to the water fall. It was nice and some of our party had a swim. Then back to the van for the 2.5 hour drive home. Again bounced around all over the place in the mini bus. Sorry worse trip I’ve booked and wouldn’t recommend it. Read more Written April 11, 2024

  • kpertsee 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Five islands in one day! This island excursion was easily the highlight of our trip to Phuket. What an adventure: sea kayaking in beautiful caves, visiting scenic James Bond Island, hiking through a limestone cave, lunch in a floating village, and it all ended on a beautiful beach where we could swim and buy alcoholic drinks. A very competent crew kept us safe and supplied us with lots of snacks and (non-alcoholic) drinks. Highly recommend this tour from Crystal Sea Marine. Read more Written April 10, 2024

  • Gerson Rodrigue... D 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not worth the full day trip with 5 spots…only the Canoeing at Hong island is worth it. Out of 5 stops (Cave at Phanak island, Canoeing at Hong island, Khao Phing Kan “James Bond island”, Pannyee island for lunch, Naka island for swimming). Only the Canoeing at Hong island is recommended. The James Bond and Naka islands are very commercial, full of people and water is dirty. Same for the Naka island. The cave was not worth the stop. My recommendation is to book just the Canoeing at Hong island, then you can enjoy the rest of your day at any other clear water beaches like phi phi. Read more Written April 9, 2024

  • 598meec 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome Jet Ski tour! I enjoyed the entire tour. I’ve done jet skiing before, but they are much more strict, larger groups, slower paced, and definitely shorter. Of course there are always safety rules in place which is reasonable. I loved the freedom of being allowed to go at our own pace, and in turn, was able to fully enjoy the jet ski. We had a much smaller group from what I was used to, so stopping to allow others to catch up was at a minimal. I also love that I wasn’t and didn’t feel rushed in any way. Loved that they took many and plenty of photos for us during the entire tour. Would highly recommend this package for those who enjoy speed and activities on/in the water, as well as beautiful sights of several islands and beaches. Read more Written April 8, 2024
