Lewis Hamilton

Lewis' milestones, lewis' mercedes career history, lewis' helmets.

The helmet is a crucial safety feature for a Formula One driver. But it’s also an important way to express themselves in the design and colours they choose – making them stand out from the rest of the grid and be instantly recognisable to the fans. Scroll through some of Lewis' most iconic designs to see how his style has evolved through his years with Mercedes.

An evolution of his 2022 design, Lewis’ 2023 helmet keeps the yellow and purple of the previous year, while adding some extra flourishes like Brasilian-inspired green tinted championship stars and a bold rainbow across the top as he continues to show support for the LGBQT+ community.

Lewis’ first helmet after joining the team retained his classic yellow look while modernising the red, blue, and green ribbon design he has used since he was karting. A vibrant colour scheme that looked right at home in the cockpit of his first Silver Arrow.

A brand-new colour scheme for Lewis to mark the start of a new era in Formula 1. Lewis debuted a pearl white and red design for the helmet that he would wear as he won his second F1 title. Lewis’ now iconic motto ‘Still I Rise’ appeared on the back of his helmet for the very first time.

Lewis went back to his classic yellow for 2017 as he fought his way to his fourth F1 title. It was in this helmet that Lewis surpassed his hero Ayrton Senna’s tally of 65 pole positions in Canada before breaking the all-time record held by Michael Schumacher in Monza just a few races later.

A golden helmet to crown another golden season. Lewis rounded out his fifth title winning year in style in Abu Dhabi with this awesome design.

Lewis switched up his helmet colours again for the 2019 season, racing this bold red and white design on the way to his sixth F1 title.

A fitting tribute, Lewis’ Monaco helmet was a salute to his dear friend Niki Lauda. Based on the Austrian’s iconic red and white look from his own racing career, the design inspired Lewis to a famous victory around the streets of Monte Carlo, held just days after Niki’s passing.

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Lewis switched to a new purple design for 2020, a year in which he dominated the field to win his record-equalling seventh F1 title.

Chasing history in purple. Lewis raced this refined purple and silver design as he battled Max Verstappen for the 2021 Formula 1 world title.

A special design for a very special weekend. Lewis charged from last to first to claim a famous victory at Interlagos in this design featuring the green and yellow of Brasil and Ayrton Senna.

Striking and powerful, this design first appeared at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix and was front and centre as Lewis battled for his eighth F1 world title. A sign of Lewis’ passion and desire to raise awareness for injustices around the world, the rainbow would be carried on into Lewis’ future designs.

Yellow was back in for 2022, but with a neon twist, as Lewis added his original helmet colour to the now well-established purple design. Yellow car numbers completed the look for LH that season.

Lewis' Favourite Track

Silverstone circuit, great britain.

"My favourite track is my home race: Silverstone. It’s a circuit that has so much history. You feel it whenever you go there, all the great drivers that have raced there. Coupled with that, the layout is just incredible. It’s all high speed and medium speed corners so a real challenge. It’s the ultimate test of probably all of the tracks we race at. The ultimate challenge for the downforce of the car. It has some of the coolest sections of track anywhere in the world: Copse, Maggotts, Becketts, Stowe…I could go on! That whole combination leaves me lost for words. I don’t think there are many tracks in the world that have a better combination of corners."

Who could replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes?

Lewis Hamilton’s shock departure from Mercedes at the end of 2024 to join Ferrari will go down as one of the biggest driver moves in Formula One history.

With over half the grid out of contract, the driver market ‘silly season’ was always going to be a major storyline through 2024.

But no one predicted it being sparked this early, a month out from the new season, especially not by a driver whose future looked to be sewn up. Hamilton’s two-year contract, announced in August, was in fact a ‘1+1’ deal, opening the door for his exit to Ferrari.

It will have a massive knock-on effect in the driver market, opening up one of the most coveted seats on the F1 grid. Filling the shoes of a seven-time world champion, and someone who’s success has been synonymous with that of the team, is going to be a big, big job.

Which drivers are up to the challenge? Here’s a look at the potential candidates to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton’s departure comes as a big blow to Mercedes following such a long relationship that stretches right through his F1 career. Hamilton’s first F1 title, won with McLaren in 2008, came when it was Mercedes’ main team.

Hamilton said upon signing his new Mercedes contract in August that he had “unfinished business” with the team and there was “no place I would rather be.”

Mercedes has established a strong bond with Hamilton through his F1 career, working together on many off-track charitable initiatives such as Mission 44, designed to improve diversity and representation within motorsport.

But his departure leaves Mercedes contemplating potential replacements after initially planning to partner Hamilton and Russell until at least the end of the 2025 season.

The majority of the F1 grid is out of contract for next year. Only Verstappen, Leclerc, Russell, and the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have their futures sewn up, leaving plenty of candidates for Hamilton’s seat.

‘A partnership like no other’

Mercedes have just added to today’s statement by posting the following tweet.

F1 react to today’s news

Some extremely wholesome content from the official F1 X account.

Why Lewis Hamilton is joining Ferrari

Why Lewis Hamilton is joining Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton has been linked to a Ferrari move throughout his F1 career. In May last year, when reports emerged suggesting he’d been in talks over a switch for 2024, Hamilton denied there had been any contact, while Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur claimed they “didn’t have discussions”.

Vasseur worked with Hamilton during his junior racing career and said in December they were “always in contact”, before joking: “If he signed a contract with me each time we spoke in the past, it would have cost me a fortune!”

Hamilton is also known to be close to John Elkann, Ferrari’s president, after meeting many years ago at a Google event in Italy. “That’s when our friendship started, and we’ve always remained in touch,” Hamilton said in November.

Signing Hamilton is a prospect that Elkann is thought to have long coveted. He has now secured the sport’s biggest name for his team, serving as major statement for Ferrari as it seeks to end a championship drought stretching back to 2008.

Sainz: ‘News about my future will be announced in due course’

Sainz: ‘News about my future will be announced in due course’

Carlos Sainz has published a statement following the news that Ferrari will replace him with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2025 season.

It reads: “Following today's news, Scuderia Ferrari and myself will part ways at the end of 2024.

“We still have a long season ahead of us and, like always, I will give my absolute best for the Team and for the Tifosi all around the world.

“News about my future will be announced in due course.”

Why Hamilton is quitting Mercedes to form a Ferrari ‘superteam’

It’s the end of an era — and the biggest driver move in Formula One history.

After 12 seasons, six world championships and 82 race wins, Lewis Hamilton is leaving Mercedes for Ferrari.

It’s a day most thought would never come. Hamilton himself said last year he expected to remain with Mercedes “til my last days”, and there was “no place I would rather be.”

But the appeal of a shock move to Ferrari, announced for 2025 on Thursday, proved too strong for the seven-time champion seeking a record-breaking eighth world title.

And here’s Ferrari’s statement.

“Scuderia Ferrari is pleased to announce that Lewis Hamilton will be joining the team in 2025, on a multi-year contract.”

Hamilton to join Ferrari at end of this year’s season

Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari for the 2025 Formula One season in a shock move away from Mercedes.

After news emerged on Thursday morning indicating talks were progressing rapidly, Mercedes announced this evening that Hamilton would leave the team at the end of this season.

The switch to Ferrari brings together the most successful driver and most successful team in F1 history, going down as one of the biggest driver transfer shocks the sport has known.

Hamilton will race alongside Charles Leclerc at Ferrari in 2025 after the Monegasque driver signed a new long-term contract last week. Carlos Sainz, a two-time race winner for Ferrari, is now set to leave the team at the end of the season.

Hamilton: ‘I want to make my last year here one to remember’

Hamilton: ‘I want to make my last year here one to remember’

Lewis Hamilton, as quoted in Mercedes’ statement: “I have had an amazing 11 years with this team and I'm so proud of what we have achieved together.

“Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. It's a place where I have grown up, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

“But the time is right for me to take this step and I'm excited to be taking on a new challenge.

“I will be forever grateful for the incredible support of my Mercedes family, especially Toto for his friendship and leadership and I want to finish on a high together. I am 100% committed to delivering the best performance I can this season and making my last year with the Silver Arrows, one to remember.”

Toto Wolff: “We accept Lewis’s decision’

Toto Wolff: “We accept Lewis’s decision’

Toto Wolff adds: “In terms of a team-driver pairing, our relationship with Lewis has become the most successful the sport has seen, and that’s something we can look back on with pride; Lewis will always be an important part of Mercedes motorsport history.

“However, we knew our partnership would come to a natural end at some point, and that day has now come.

“We accept Lewis’s decision to seek a fresh challenge, and our opportunities for the future are exciting to contemplate.

“But for now, we still have one season to go, and we are focused on going racing to deliver a strong 2024.”

“The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team and Lewis Hamilton will part ways at the end of the 2024 season. Lewis has activated a release option in the contract announced last August and this season will therefore be his last driving for the Silver Arrows.

“The news brings an end to what is currently a 17-year long relationship in F1 with Mercedes-Benz and an 11-year long partnership with the works team.”

Lewis Hamilton to depart Mercedes for Ferrari ahead of 2025

There we have it: official confirmation that Lewis Hamilton will depart Mercedes ahead of the 2025 Formula One season.

Where would Hamilton’s potential departure leave Mercedes?

Lewis Hamilton’s departure would come as a big blow to Mercedes following such a long relationship that stretches right through his F1 career. Hamilton’s first F1 title, won with McLaren in 2008, came when it was Mercedes’ main team.

But his departure would leave Mercedes contemplating potential replacements after initially planning to partner Hamilton and Russell until at least the end of the 2025 season.

Your views on Lewis Hamilton’s potential move to Ferrari

Your views on Lewis Hamilton’s potential move to Ferrari

Adam M: “Wow! For me it’s not so much Hamilton moving to Ferrari, it’s the knock on effect it will have on the grid with so many contracts expiring. Albon to Mercedes? Sainz to Red Bull? Where does that leave Perez? Aston Martin? Will Alonso extend and will Stroll leave F1?”

Jessica U: “Seems like an odd move that could either be upwards or downwards, but lots of us had the same doubts when he moved to Merc.”

James H: “Not surprised when you think about it. He’s probably got 1 or 2 years left. Merc won’t challenge in the current regs (if indeed anyone remotely can) .There may be a glimmer of hope that Ferrari could maybe do something for a finale gig.”

Michael Dominski

Will history repeat itself for Hamilton?

Will history repeat itself for Hamilton?

Lewis Hamilton surprised the Formula 1 world in 2012 when he opted to move from McLaren to Mercedes for the following season, replacing the retiring Michael Schumacher and partnering Nico Rosberg. Mercedes had only returned to the sport after more than a half-century absence in 2010, and they had yet to mount a serious title challenge. Hamilton, meanwhile, had won his first world championship with McLaren in 2008.

But ahead of coming regulation changes in 2014, he moved to the team he thought was best positioned to win in the new era, and it paid off historically well with six drivers championships.

Now, the same thing may be happening again, as Hamilton looks set to move to Ferrari in 2025 ahead of new engine regulations in 2026. Could his foresight pay off again?

George Russell to become the Mercedes kingpin?

George Russell to become the Mercedes kingpin?

With Lewis Hamilton's departure, Mercedes will fully become George Russell's team starting in 2025. That ought to suit both parties well, as the team have likely been planning on Russell leading it into the future since his days at Williams.

Russell has one career F1 win (2022 São Paulo Grand Prix) and one pole (the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix) to his name so far, and Mercedes will be expecting big things from him in the future.

Hard to underestimate the shock of this news

Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari debut will be in Australia after 2025 calendar confirmed

  • No new additions in 2025 as 24-race calendar remains

Lewis Hamilton will make his Ferrari debut in Australia after Formula One announced next season’s record-equalling 24-round calendar.

Hamilton, 39, is set to realise a childhood dream when he swaps Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025, with the seven-time world champion’s opening race to take place in Melbourne on 16 March.

It will mark the first time since 2019 that the F1 season has kicked off at Albert Park after the following year’s scheduled opener was cancelled at the last minute amid the outbreak of coronavirus.

The 2025 campaign is due to end in Abu Dhabi on 7 December, with the British Grand Prix – starting the first of its new 10-year contract extension at Silverstone – on 6 July.

The triple world champion Max Verstappen has been vocal in his criticism of the ever-expanding length of the F1 schedule. But for next season, at least, there will be no new additions to the calendar.

The campaign has started in Bahrain for the past four seasons, but with Ramadan staged throughout March in 2025, the rounds in the Gulf kingdom, and in Saudi Arabia, will be pushed back to April.

F1’s chief executive, Stefano Domenicali, said: “2025 will be a special year as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Formula One world championship, and it’s that legacy and experience that allows us to deliver such a strong calendar.

“Once again, we’ll visit 24 incredible venues around the world, delivering top-class racing, hospitality and entertainment, which will be enjoyed by millions of fans worldwide.

“I would also like to pay tribute to our F1 teams and drivers, the heroes of our sport, and our fans around the world for continuing to follow Formula One with such incredible enthusiasm.”

Lewis Hamilton said he was surprised the performance of his Mercedes deteriorated in Chinese Grand Prix Qualifying, having thought it couldn't "get any worse" before making a shock early exit.

The seven-time world champion had enjoyed an encouraging start to Saturday as he finished second to Max Verstappen in the Sprint, but then only managed to qualify 18th for Sunday's race as team-mate George Russell took eighth.

Hamilton was on course to comfortably advance to Q2 before he ran wide at Turn 14 hairpin, losing a significant chunk of time.

Mercedes have endured their worst ever start to a Formula 1 season, taking just 34 points from the opening four rounds to trail leaders Red Bull by 107 points.

"I made massive changes into qualifying. It wasn't too bad in some places but I couldn't get it really to stop in Turn 14. It is what it is. I'll have fun from back there.

"This morning George and I had very similar cars but this afternoon we're trying to experiment still with the car so I went one way, a long way and he went the other way just to see if we could find anything, and that's what we need to do at the moment.

"But it didn't work. I'll give it my best shot…18th is pretty bad.

"When I was making the set-up changes I was like, 'it can't get any worse, surely.' And it did."

Russell and Hamilton react to disappointing qualifying session.

Hamilton, who remained ninth in the drivers' standings despite claiming seven points in the Sprint, later took some personal responsibility for his qualifying exit.

"I don't blame anything on the team," he added. "It wasn't one of my best qualifying laps.

"I'm very strong mentally. It's not great.

"Sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong. This car is on a knife edge as you know so it can easily do what we had."

Russell: Set-ups weren't too dissimilar

Russell appeared to dispute Hamilton's account of the Mercedes set-ups, suggesting that there wasn't a significant difference between the cars.

"We weren't too dissimilar, to be honest," he told Sky Sports F1 . "We both went in a similar direction. Obviously there are always small differences between the cars.

TEDS QUALI BOOK

"We still need to learn as much as we can and when you arrive at a Sprint race you have no practice, no time to test. If we were to have maximised everything this weekend, maybe we would have been P3 or 4 on the grid, but we're not here to fight for P3 or 4 or 5.

"We want to fight for victories and we want to fight for championships, and we have a lot to do before we find ourselves in that position. Sometimes we may need to sacrifice a race or two and try some bolder things to get a better and greater understanding. As difficult as it is in the moment, it's what's necessary for the long run."

Sky Sports F1 pundit Nico Rosberg, who drove alongside Hamilton at Mercedes from 2013 to 2016, says the different perspectives coming from the Silver Arrows are "interesting".

CHINESE GP SPRINT HLS

While Hamilton got the better of Russell in Friday's wet Sprint Qualifying session, the younger Brit now holds a 4-1 head-to-head advantage in this full qualifying this season.

Rosberg said: "It's interesting how this year, because George has most of the time been in front of Lewis - 4-1 now in qualifying - and Lewis always tends to say, 'yeah, but we have such different set-ups and such a big car difference,' and that's kind of his excuse so far this year so.

"Each time he says that, George is like, 'last time I checked, the cars were pretty similar.' And he's gone again for that, so it's quite interesting."

Lewis Hamilton introduced as 'eight-time world champion' at Mercedes sponsor event

Lewis Hamilton introduced as 'eight-time world champion' at Mercedes sponsor event

lewis hamilton world tour

It is still unbelievable to many that Lewis Hamilton did not win an eighth F1 world title in Abu Dhabi in late 2021, and we got proof again at a Mercedes sponsor event only last weekend.

Hamilton was the special guest of honour at the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in Malaysia on Saturday, and Petronas is of course the title sponsor of the Mercedes team.

The 38-year-old British megastar received a terrific reception as he was introduced onto stage, but it was the way that introduction was done which caused a few raised eyebrows. And doubtless a few embarrassed blushes.

Lewis Hamilton an 'eight-time world champion'. The event host said quite simply: "UTP, could you please put your hands together and your phones down for eight-time world champion Lewis Hamilton". Yes, you read that right, eight-time world champion. Not seven. “Put your hands together for 8 time world champion Lewis Hamilton” @Petronas knows what they’re doing 😉 pic.twitter.com/h6ogNRh194 — sumi ⚡️ (@99thcent) March 25, 2023 if(isMobile == true){ $('div#snackban7').html(' '); }else{ $('div#snackban7').hide(); } Of course a few eagle-eyed fans on social media spotted the faux pas, but it did not detract from what was clearly a terrific event which inspired a legion of young Hamilton and F1 fans. Mercedes and UTP shared a number of social media posts showing Lewis signing autographs for fans amid huge excitement on campus. Lewis Hamilton’s Delightful Undercover Adventure in Japan Ahead of the Suzuka Grand Prix

In a light-hearted moment before the high stakes of the Japanese Grand Prix, F1 superstar Lewis Hamilton was spotted indulging in his love for Nintendo. His recent escapades in Japan, including a humorous visit to a gaming store while donning a Toad Mario Hat, showcased a different side of the British champion.

Key Takeaways :

  • Lewis Hamilton was seen at Universal Studios in Osaka, blending in with fans while wearing a Toad Mario Hat, a testament to his affection for Nintendo.
  • His quest for video games isn’t new; last year in Canada, he sought Mario Kart and ended up buying a Sega Genesis game featuring his idol Ayrton Senna.
  • Ahead of the Suzuka Grand Prix, Hamilton reflects on a potential strategy change following his third-place finish in Singapore, hinting at an interesting approach for the upcoming race.

As Formula One circles its wagons in Japan for the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, the circuit’s buzz isn’t just about high-speed chases and championship points. Sometimes, it’s the off-track adventures that catch the fans’ attention. This was exactly the case with Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, who gave fans a delightful glimpse into his off-track persona.

In a rather amusing twist, Hamilton was spotted at a gaming store in Universal Studios, Osaka. The F1 star, known for his intense focus and competitive spirit on the track, showcased his lighter side, wearing a Toad Mario Hat, a classic character from the Nintendo universe. This act not only speaks volumes about his playful nature but also connects him with fans on a more personal and relatable level.

Hamilton’s love for video games is not a newly discovered passion. He had a similar episode last year in Montreal, Canada. In search of Mario Kart, Hamilton eventually purchased a game from his childhood, featuring his hero Ayrton Senna, on the Sega Genesis, then known as Mega Drive. This nostalgic moment reflects his admiration for Senna and his ongoing connection with the gaming world.

While Hamilton’s escapades in Japan offer a lighthearted narrative, they also subtly point towards his mental preparation for the upcoming race. After securing a podium finish in Singapore, Hamilton is looking to carry forward his momentum. Notably, he mentioned a different strategy he had considered for Singapore, one that could have altered the race’s outcome. With the Suzuka Grand Prix on the horizon, there’s anticipation around whether Hamilton will implement this untried strategy.

Lewis Hamilton, a name synonymous with speed and precision on the race track, also has a side that resonates with the playful and nostalgic elements of life. Whether it’s walking into a gaming store with a Toad Mario Hat or contemplating race strategies, Hamilton continues to intrigue and captivate fans worldwide. As the engines roar for the Japanese Grand Prix, all eyes will be on him, both on and off the track.

F1 News: Lewis Hamilton 'Kept Up at Night' After Recent Poor Performance

T he last few seasons have not been typical for a driver of Lewis Hamilton's caliber. With Mercedes, Hamilton has transitioned from an era of dominance to facing significant hurdles on the track. The stark contrast in performance from previous years of victory has marked a period of reflection and concern for the seven-time world champion.

In the 2022 season, Hamilton and his team failed to secure any race wins, a stark departure from their usual record, finishing sixth in the championship standings. This was a humbling experience for a team and driver accustomed to leading the pack. The following year, 2023, brought a glimmer of improvement as the Brackley team managed to clinch a race victory thanks to George Russell, and the 7-time champion was able to secure a third-place finish in the championship behind the Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

This showed signs of potential recovery, suggesting that the team could be on the path to regaining their former glory.

However, the 2024 season has so far proven challenging. Early into the current season, Hamilton is ranked ninth in the championship standings, with only 10 points after four races. Even more telling is his performance relative to his teammate, George Russell, who has consistently outpaced him. Hamilton's best finish this season was a seventh place in Bahrain, a result far from the podium finishes he once regularly achieved.

"The ultimate thing that keeps me up at night is when are we looking to fight for wins? What can I do differently? What can I do better? How can I improve?," he said in conversation with Motorsport.com, via Motor1.com .

The team's spirit remains unbroken despite the setbacks, according to the racer.

"We're very, very united. Everyone's working incredibly hard, so we've got to continue at it."

Indeed, team dynamics play a significant role in F1, and Mercedes is often lauded for their strong internal culture.

"What's really special about this team is we have amazing core values. The team continues to do its talking, not only on track but also off track. We're not delivering in terms of winning races like we exist to do, but it's not always about the destination, it's about the journey, right? And we're doing it together."

With Hamilton moving to Ferrari at the end of this season, this transition will likely be slowly taking shape. But he's adamant about making it a season to remember with the Silver Arrows.
