Even as the pandemic raged, NEEDTOBREATHE continued to expand its fanbase, as evidenced by their 2020 album release, Out of Body . Jonathan Hutcherson

At 16-years-old, Jonathan Hutcherson auditioned for NBC’s The Voice and ended up on Team Pharrell Williams. His appearance on the show boosted his confidence. After his final high school test, he bolted straight to Nashville on February 1, 2018—a date he memorialized with a tattoo on his arm. His independent single “Strangers” racked up 1 million-plus Spotify streams as he logged countless sessions around Music City, balancing a job at Lowe’s to stay afloat. In 2019, he caught the attention of Creative Nation and signed a publishing and development deal. Co-writing with the likes of Parker Welling, Jamie Moore, Josh Jenkins, and Heather Morgan, he spent the next year cultivating his sound, drawing equally from those formative gospel influences, classic country, and homegrown bluegrass with a twist of modern pop.

Great show all the way around.

To start with Matt Maeson was excellent! Led off the night with a 7 songs and then was gone less than 10 minutes before Needtobreathe took to the stage.

The songs were well done and the had the crowd on their feet the entire time. The covers they did were spot on.

Can't wait to see them again. This was my 6th time seeing them in concert and they NEVER disappoint!

This was the second time we have seen Needtobreathe and it was incredible! The first time was last year at the Armory in Minneapolis and we went to see Johnnyswim, not knowing who Needtobreathe was at the time. Crazy, right? The concert in Omaha was superb, the acoustic set was amazing and the crowd was on fire! Thanks for the fantastic entertainment, you guys are incredibly talented and a joy to watch!

This was my 6th time to see NEEDTOBREATHE live! They are the most consistent, humble and hardest working band in rock music! Every time I seem them, their show is different and new. They have a great sound and a great way of expressing themselves through their music. Truly genuine artists! I will see them again!

NEEDTOBREATHE benefiting from Taylor Swift ‘master class’ in touring production

After touring with Taylor Swift years ago, the South Carolina rock band brings its “Caves” world tour to Van Andel Arena on Tuesday. The Local Spins interview.

Seth Bolt of NEEDTOBREATHE admits his pop-rock band learned a lot on the road with Taylor Swift.

“Touring with her was inspiring. It was the biggest production we’d ever seen,” recalled Bolt. “It was sort of a master class on touring and performing, and we got a front-row seat on how to tour on that level.”

NEEDTOBREATHE was a surprise selection to open for Swift on her 2011 arena tour, which featured a stop at Van Andel Arena. Band members have used the experience in crafting their own arena tour, which hits that same venue on Tuesday (Nov. 7).

“We have lots of moving parts we’re putting together,” Bolt noted of the band led by singer-songwriter Bear Rinehart. “It’s certainly new territory for us, but we can’t wait for our fans to see it.”

Bolt was a childhood friend of brothers Bear and Bo Rineheart in rural South Carolina, sons of a pastor. “Their mom gave me piano lessons,” he recalled.

Adding other members along the way, they played music together for 20 years, even through periods of strained relationship between the brothers.

A break finally came when Bo left the band in spring of 2020, just as the pandemic hit. Suddenly the future was unknown.

“We wanted to make it work, and did everything we could, but it was, like… it wasn’t meant to be,” Bolt said of the brothers’ going separate ways. “Then everyone was under the weight of this massive force (COVID), that none of us could control. It was an existential situation for the band.”

They had some songs ready for an album that autumn (“Out of Body”), but that same season the players held up in an old house for a three-week, live-in writing and recording session from which came their 2021 release, “Into the Mystery.”

Guitarist Tyler Burkum stepped in to replace Bo and they were back to a quintet. (Bo Rinehart has since released new music under the moniker “Coy Roy”).

“This band has always been marked by a spirit of determination that really stems from Bear,” Bolt added. “His talent and the way he leads….this guy was not gonna quit and I wanted to be on his team.”

NEW MUSIC: TOURING BEHIND ‘CAVES’

That continued spirit led to “Caves,” their brand new album upon which the new tour is based. This time the band spent a full two years on the writing and recording process, wanting do the best version of each song they could.

“We decided to leave no stone unturned flexing the new capabilities the band has,” Bolt said.

It’s a collection still infused with their southern rock heritage, as displayed on the title track. But there are also several inspirational ballads, such as “Fall on Me,” one of Bolt’s favorites.

“For me that’s a reassuring song to people you love that – even on your worst days – there’s someone you can rely on.”

The New Album: ‘Caves’

Rinehart co-wrote the song with pastor-songwriter Steve Furtick of Elevation Church in North Carolina, and longtime Christian music songwriter/producer Jason Ingram.

Bolt points out it’s not a church/worship song, but rather a statement picturing unconditional love which resonates with Bolt and his wife after the recent arrival of their newborn daughter.

“Dreams,” co-written with Judah Akers of touring partners Judah & The Lion, is another personal highlight.

Bolt says the band plans to showcase all three of the new songs on the tour.

With its loyal fan base, NEEDTOBREATHE has retained listeners while putting itself in front of new ones. Last year they toured with OneRepublic, but also did a solo “acoustic” tour which brought a sold-out crowd to Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids in 2022 .

The year after their tour with Taylor Swift, they were a headliner at the Unity Christian Music Festival in Muskegon.

Now they’re coming out of the “caves” of the last few years, stretching into a expansive and even fuller sound.

“Here we are after 20 years and still going,” Bolt beamed. “It’s rare for a band to exist this long. “I’m just thrilled to continue to see day after day what else we can do.”

Needtobreathe To Bring “The Caves World Tour” To Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre On May 29, 2024

(DETROIT – September 15, 2023) – Today, Grammy®-nominated, multi-platinum rock band NEEDTOBREATHE celebrates the release of CAVES, their ninth studio album. “The CAVES World Tour” is extending into 2024, with new dates announced today. The band’s “high-energy, infectious” (Music Row) live show will come to arenas across the country starting this fall. The tour makes a stop at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre featuring alternative rock band Judah & The Lion as special guests on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 7 p.m.

REVIEW: NEEDTOBREATHE Acoustic Live Tour

I couldn’t help but be excited as I stood in the buzzing line on the sidewalk to get in to the concert, under the marquee sign lit with NEEDTOBREATHE’s name. It was clear that there were many loyal fans in attendance, and so that was surely a good sign!

After an opener by singer-songwriter Trent Dabbs, the concert began with golden lights onstage turning on one by one, like lanterns in the dark. The band then entered, and launched right in to several songs. One thing that was very fascinating to me about this concert was the set: the background consisted of many twinkling lights, like stars in the sky, with a wave of vertical lines of light at the bottom. The color and intensity of the lights changed according to the mood of the song they were playing, and the bars of light would move at times and turn off completely at others. I thought that it was very well-done in that it was interesting and added to, rather than distracting from, the music.

It was quite a long concert (almost 3 hours with the opener and an intermission), and NEEDTOBREATHE played a host of songs, of which a few of my favorites were “ Wasteland ,” “ Difference Maker ,” and “ Multiplied .” However, the one thing that I didn’t like was that I found that the music was generally too loud. I expected it to be a rather loud concert, but it was their acoustic tour after all, and so I thought that it would be a little more manageable (I can only imagine how loud their non-acoustic tour concerts must be!). The volume was distracting from the actual music, though, I found that to be frustrating.

On that note, the best part of the concert was hands-down the last songs, during which NEEDTOBREATHE disconnected entirely from the sound system and came to the front of the stage. No microphones, and no amps – just human voices, two guitars, and a single drum. I didn’t want it to end, and I wished that they had performed the entire concert like this! It was in this configuration that they concluded the concert with their hit song “ Brother ,” to wild applause. After what seemed like a long time filled with shouts of appreciation and unabated applause, NEEDTOBREATHE returned to the stage for an encore of their song “ More Heart Less Attack .”

I had a great time at this concert, and it showed me that it’s good to get out of your artistic comfort zone every once in a while!
