Marie-Victor enlisted as a sous lieutenant in the Regiment de Beaujolais Infanterie on 15 July 1782 and during the following turbulent years received a number of different appointments and in one particular incident was prominent in saving the life of Marie-Antoinette.

He was appointed Colonel of the 3e Regiment des Chasseurs-a-Cheval on 5 February 1792 and during the late summer was arrested and taken prisoner by the Austrians as were a number of prominent French officers. He was fortunate however and released a few weeks later at the end of September. He intended to return to France but was ordered to Brussels as an migr where he remained for the next five years.

He was set free at the end of 1799 and returned to France and was almost immediately sent to Egypt by the First Consul on the frigate "l'Osiris" carrying the announcement of the establishment of the Consulate.

Having arrived at Aboukir in February 1800, he became ADC to Kleber at the capture of Belbeis, then to the eccentric General Menou following the popular Kleber was murdered. After taking provisional command of the 22e Chasseurs-a-Cheval he received serious head wounds from an exploding shell at Alexandria on 13 March 1801.

He returned to France with his regiment and was confirmed as Chef-de-Brigade of the 22e Chasseurs-a-Cheval by order of the Consuls in July 1802.

He was serving in Germany under General Edouard-Jean-Baptiste Milhaud whose brigade comprising La Tour Maubourg's 22e Chasseurs-a-Cheval, and the 16e Chasseurs-a- Cheval under their Colonel, the future General Antoine-Jean-Auguste-Henri Durosnel. These regiments were present at Austerlitz, where they formed part of Prince Joachim Murat's very impressive Reserve de Cavalerie.

La Tour Maubourg was promoted to General-de-Brigade less than three weeks after the battle on 24 December 1805.

During the battle of Jena on 14 October 1806, La Tour Maubourg found himself in the 3e Division des Dragons under General-de-Division Louis-Chretien Carriere de Beaumont, forming part of the Reserve de Cavalerie of Prince Joachim Murat. Latour Maubourg's brigade consisted of the 9e and 22e Regiments des Dragons. His fellow brigade commanders were General Charles-Joseph Boye, Baron d'Abaumont who commanded the 5e and 8e Regiments des Dragons, and General Frederic-Christophe-Henri-Pierre-Claude Marizy, Baron de Vagnair with the 12e and 16e Regiments des Dragons making a powerful force of over 3,000 sabres in 13 squadrons with three artillery pieces. The same formation was also present at Eylau on the 7th February 1807.

The division suffered some casualties to regimental commanders during this period, at Austerlitz Colonel Jean-Nicolas Lacour of the 5e Dragons was seriously wounded. Then at Prentzlow on 28 October 1806, while leading the 21e Dragons, Colonel Jean-Baptiste-Charles-Rene-Joseph Mas de Polart who was later to become a General suffered serious wounds. At Nasielsk on 24 December 1806, Colonel Louis Beckler of the 8e Dragons was killed. Then at Eylau, on 8 February 1807, Colonel Mas de Polart was again wounded while leading the 21e Dragons and on the same day Colonel Francois-Felix Girault Baron de Martigny of the 12e Dragons was also among the casualties. At Friedland on 14 June 1807, Colonel Alexandre-Louis-Robert Girardin d'Ermenonville, was among the wounded of the 8e Regiment des Dragons.

Promotion to General-de-Division for Latour Maubourg came in May 1807 and with it, service at Heilsberg and Friedland.. He was also made Baron de l'Empire in June 1808.

Later that year he went to Spain under the command of le Marechal Bessieres and was present at the fall of Madrid, then at Ucles, Cuenca, Medellin, Talavera de la Reyna, Ocana, Badajoz, Gebora, Albuquerque, Albuhera, and Elvas, before being asked to command a division in Andalucia.

Recalled from Spain in 1812 he went on the Russian Campaign where he was given command of the IV Reserve Cavalry Corps which included: the 4th (Polish) Light Cavalry Division under General Rozniecki which comprised the 29th Brigade commanded by General Turno made up of the 3e, 11e, and 16e Lanciers, a total of 11 squadrons and two horse artillery batteries; the 7e Cuirassier Division under General Jean-Thomas-Guillaume Lorge consisting of the 1er Brigade under General Thielemann made up of the Saxon Garde du Corps, the Saxon Cuirassier Regiment von Zastrow, and the 14e Polish Cuirassiers, making a total of 12 squadrons, and the 2e Brigade commanded by General Lepel consisted of the 1er and 2e Westphalien Cuirassier Regiments making another 8 squadrons and 2 more horse artillery batteries.

Latour Maubourg was wounded at Borodino and gave distinguished service at Mojaisk. He survived the rigours of the Retreat and in 1813 was decorated with the Grand Croix de la Reunion. He was then present at Bautzen, Reichenbach, Goldberg, Dresden and finally Wachau where he had his thigh carried away by a canon ball. He was the officer who seeing his valet distressed at his injuries, is alleged to have shouted, "What have you got to cry about man, you have one less boot to polish in future."

He easily pledged his loyalty to the returning Bourbon monarch, and remained with him during the 100 days. He was decorated on a number of occasions and held some important posts including that of Ambassador to London in 1819.

He sat on the Conseil de Guerre at the trial of le Marechal Michel Ney and sad to say he voted for the death penalty for his former comrade in arms.

La Tour Maubourg was an excellent officer and one of the great commanders of his time but never lost his noble leanings and confidently embraced the restored Bourbons. He was a natural leader but not an altogether popular one. He had a fine grasp of tactics, did not lack bravery, and was certainly an officer one would not wish to displease.

General Marie-Victor-Nicolas de Fay Latour-Maubourg

Marie-Victor-Nicolas de Fay Latour-Maubourg

By Nathan D. Jensen

Of the nobility, Marie-Victor-Nicolas de Fay Latour-Maubourg first joined the French military at age 14 as a sous-lieutenant in an infantry regiment. Two years later he joined the cavalry, and a year after that was promoted to captain. In 1789 he joined the Garde du Corps, but in 1791 he left that unit to become a lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Chasseurs à Cheval. In February of 1792 Latour-Maubourg became colonel of his unit, and in June served at La Grisoelle. Fearful of the direction the Revolution was turning, Latour-Maubourg, his brother, Lafayette , and a few others fled France in August. They did not make it far, and were arrested and imprisoned by the Austrians. However, he was released before long though Lafayette and his brother would remain in prison for many years.

Latour-Maubourg then went to Holland and eventually settled in Brussels. After Napoleon's coup d'état in 1799, Latour-Maubourg returned to France. He was given a mission to announce the establishment of the Consulate to the troops in Egypt. He set forth in January of 1800 and arrived in February, and General Kléber made him a chef de brigade and aide-de-camp. Latour-Maubourg fought at Belbeis and after Kléber's death became an aide-de-camp to General Menou . Next he was given command of the 22nd Chasseurs à Cheval in July, and the next year was badly wounded by a piece of a shell to the head at Alexandria.

After returning to France, Latour-Maubourg remained in command of the 22nd Chasseurs à Cheval and was placed in Milhaud's Light Cavalry Brigade. Campaigning in 1805, he fought at Austerlitz and earned a promotion to général de brigade on Christmas Eve. In 1806 he took command of a brigade of Beaumont de La Boninière's dragoons and led them into action at Jena . He fought at Czarnowo in December before taking command of a brigade in Lasalle's division. In 1807 General Latour-Maubourg fought at Bergfried on February 3rd and two days later was wounded by a shot to the left arm at Deppen. In May he received a promotion to général de division and took command of the 1st Division of Dragoons, replacing Klein . Leading this new unit, he fought at Heilsberg and Friedland where he was wounded by a shot to the hand.

In 1808 Latour-Maubourg was rewarded as a Baron of the Empire. After serving at Mainz for a few months, he joined the Cavalry Reserve in Spain. That December he served at Madrid and then in 1809 he served at Uclès, Cuenca, Medellin, Talavera de la Reyna, and Ocana . In 1811 Latour-Maubourg participated in the siege of Badajoz and fought at La Gebora, seized Albuquerque, and was pushed back at Campo Maior. Next he fought at Albuera and then took command of V Corps in Spain, winning at Elvas. In July he resumed command of a division of cavalry under Marshal Soult in Andalusia and then in November took command of the reserve of the Army of Andalusia.

Recalled to France, Latour-Maubourg received command of the IV Cavalry Corps for the campaign in Russia. He fought at Borodino where he was wounded and then fought at Mojaisk where he distinguished himself. After surviving the retreat, in 1813 he took command of the I Cavalry Corps and received the honor of the Grand Cross of the Réunion. Leading his men throughout the campaign, he fought at Bautzen and Reichenbach in May and then Goldberg and Dresden in August. Taking part in the Battle of Leipzig , his leg was carried off at the thigh by a cannonball. Seeing his valet valet weeping at the horrific nature of his wound, Latour-Maubourg told his valet, "What are you crying about, idiot? You have one less boot to polish!" 1

Due to his wound, Latour-Maubourg no longer took an active part in campaiging. In the last days of the empire he was made a Count of the Empire. The returning Bourbons rewarded him as a Peer of France and Grand Cordon of the Legion of Honor. He refused to participate during the Hundred Days, but afterwards voted for death at the trial of Marshal Ney .

Tour-Maubourg's Show Off Your Studio

Tour-Maubourg battles tinnitus by producing more records: “I had to keep making music to forget its existence“

The French producer explains how tinnitus tied into his album Spaces of Silence and how moving back to Brussels evoked more intimate emotive music.

Moving back to his old stomping grounds from Paris to his grandparents’ house in Brussels – a nostalgic “madeleine de Proust bubble” where he made music as a teenager – jazz and house producer Tour-Maubourg powered up his old gear and set out creating his latest album, Spaces of Silence. Environmental and process-based changes and reconnecting with old sights, smells and feelings, he tells MusicTech about how he was drawn to making “more personal emotions and melodies.”

  • READ MORE: Show Off Your Studio: Warping the human voice with Factor Eight

Maubourg’s battle with tinnitus became one of the key themes of the record. That explains the album’s title, which alludes to being unable to hear silence, as such. He says music has become one of the few ways to block out uncontrollable tinnitus, with the loud music that once caused the condition now becoming its brief bittersweet saviour.

Asides from the album’s themes, Maubourg dives deep into his favourite gear, both in Brussels and in Paris, which includes deliciously vintage synthesizers, a beloved Eventide H3000SE harmonizer and all manner of drool-worthy hardware.

Hi Tour-Maubourg. Tell us about how tinnitus tied into this record.

A few years back I developed tinnitus after listening to loud music and I still carry this hiss with me on a constant basis.

In the beginning, it felt like torture and truly made me reconsider a career in music – my main worry being, ‘what if it gets worse as I keep playing in clubs and producing music?’. My first reaction was to stop any type of loud sound from reaching my ears, so I stopped all my musical activities. As a result, the tinnitus started to take more and more space in my thoughts and I quickly realised that the precautions I was taking were only making things worse. I had to keep making music to forget its existence. Unfortunately, the tinnitus never left and I still hear it every day – except when I make music, as it gets blurred into the sounds surrounding me. In some way, music became a space of silence for me, which gave me the idea for the album’s name.

Tour Maubourg in the studio

You went back home to Belgium and set up a studio space for this album. How did that affect your production process?

If I had to define the way these studio changes affected my music, there would be two.

First, the house in which I installed my studio used to be my grandparents’ house in Brussels (and my grandfather still lived there at the time). It is filled with memories from my childhood and my teenage years. Also, my grandparents have always been a very important part of my life. They are people for whom I have great admiration because of where they come from and the things they accomplished in their life.

It isn’t easy for me to put into words these emotions I felt, but it was like living in a “madeleine de Proust bubble”. Producing and composing in this very intimate time shuttle made me want to express more personal emotions and melodies. I wanted to find myself.

nicolas tour maubourg

When I left for Belgium, I left all my musical partners and friends in Paris, which resulted in a somehow forced musical isolation. It allowed me to be a lot more alone with myself, without all the noise of my daily life.

Secondly, I went from producing in a co-rented studio to having a studio in my bedroom. I managed to move with most of my gear but the studio was set up differently. It was a little more DAW-centred, as I was sitting constantly in front of my screen instead of my mixer. It didn’t affect my recording process as all my synths were still hooked to the mixer, then going into my interface, but it made me record things quicker, and start building sections immediately instead of getting stuck on the same loop for hours.

Tell us a bit more about the bedroom studio.

In Belgium, it’s located in my bedroom in my grandparent’s house in Ixelles (a commune of Brussels). I was literally sleeping between cables and synths (and my girlfriend too – but she’s kind) so it was really a return to my early adult years when I didn’t have a proper studio space.

nicolas tour maubourg

How did you use the gear in your setup?

That’s a tough question. In terms of logistics, we have a bunch of synths and drum machines and hardware effects and sound processors all plugged into a Midas mixer. The mixer master outputs go into Universal Audio Apollo inputs 1/2 and two groups of the Midas are hooked to a Scarlett 18I20 that is itself plugged in via ADAT to the Apollo ADAT input.

So really, the mixer is the centre of the studio. It’s right in front of the speakers, all the synths and outboard effects are accessible through sends or insert cables, and the idea is to be able to jam and play every synth in the room at the same time if I feel like it.

Most of the time I do the mixing as I edit it in Ableton Live , mostly adding EQs, panning, adding a main room and hall reverb, and trying to balance the sound right. Often, I process the drums as a group adding pre-amps such as the Soundtoys Radiator. If I have to record more ‘artistic’ effects like dub delays or send a snare in through a reverb, I love using outboard effects. My interface’s outputs are connected to a stereo track on the mixer and I can then add whatever I want by recording only the wet signal.

Once I’ve edited and mixed the track for the first time, it’s usually late and I have to leave the studio to catch the last metro. I listen to the track a few times on various sound systems and then come back to the studio a few days later to correct the mix.

nicolas tour maubourg

What atmosphere do you try and create in the studio?

I try as much as I can to be in a cosy, slightly dark but colourful environment. I try to create a mood in which I can escape, almost spiritually. I use a lot of dim lights, incense, essential oils etc. to make the place as comfortable and dreamy as possible.

What is your favourite piece of gear?

A friend recently lent me his MFB Tanzbär, and I am dying to buy it from him. From the first time I started playing around with it, I fell in love. It has such an organic and gentle yet powerful sound. You can create heavy loops just as much as a gentle bossa nova rhythm. Its sequencer is powerful too.

What synth or effect can be heard the most on your new release?

Definitely my Eventide H3000SE. There is a little bit of him everywhere on this record. Whether it’s just a chorus, a room or a delay, it is an incredible machine. It is, to me, one of the most artistic-sounding multi-effect units I’ve heard. It just makes the world a better place. If I could, I would probably process my life through it.

nicolas tour maubourg

What is your dream piece of gear?

Probably a Roland RE-201 Space Echo . It isn’t a very expensive dream, but it just sounds incredibly good.

What is your top piece of production advice?

When building a track, often less is more. When you are stuck, it’s better to take away stuff, add them again later, and then add more layers.

What is the one piece of advice you would give someone starting out building a studio?

Building a studio is time- and money-consuming, but it is extremely rewarding. And don’t think you need all the best gear; buy gear you like and that you feel works for you. A €200 synth with a lot of character is better to me than a €2500 beast that everyone has. Little by little, you’ll end up with something personal and it will reflect in your music.

Mayor Welch's City Hall on Tour

St. Pete Mayor Kenneth T. Welch is taking St. Pete City Hall on tour throughout the year with “Mayor Welch’s City Hall On Tour event series.” Each quarter, the Mayor and members of his City Leadership team will host “open house” tour stops at different locations throughout the city to listen to and learn from residents about their needs.

These tour stops will purposely be held in different neighborhoods, providing an opportunity for all residents to ask questions and address concerns with key City leadership. The Mayor will be joined by City Administrators, the Police Chief, Department Directors, and more.

Mayor Welch’s City Hall On Tour series is family-friendly. The Recreation Centers will be open for normal business, so youth programming will be available throughout the evening.

Isaakievskaya Ploshchad (St. Isaac's Square)

St. Isaac's Square has long been one of the main public spaces of St. Petersburg. Some of the greatest works of Russian architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries are located here, including St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Mariinsky Palace, the Hotel Astoria and the Hotel Angleterre. Also, because of the location of the city's Legislative Assembly within the Mariinsky Palace, it has the unofficial status as the main administrative area of St. Petersburg.

The history of this square began in the 1730s and 40s. The area was originally assigned for trading, with a marina planned on the Moyka, warehouses along Bolshaya Gostinaya Ulitsa, and stalls selling salt along Voznesensky Prospekt. However, in the 1760s more grandiose structures began to appear in the area. On the south side of the square the Palace of Field Marshal Ivan Chernyshev was built beyond the Moyka River. On the north side, St. Isaac's Cathedral was reconstructed to designs by Antonio Rinaldi - this was the third cathedral in the area, the first having been adapted from one of the original warehouses. In fact, the "eternal construction" of St. Isaac's Square lasted around one hundred consecutive years.

In 1796, after the death of Catherine II, Emperor Paul ordered the transfer of all the marble from the project to the construction of the Mikhailovsky Castle. As a result St. Isaac's Cathedral was finished with clay brick and the unimpressive structure was received poorly. In 1816, Alexander I commissioned Auguste de Montferrand to erect a new temple. Forty years later the temple was complete. Urban legend has it that Montferrand predicted he would die soon after the temple was complete and deliberately dragged out the construction. This, in the end, is exactly what happened. However, the time and effort shows through, and St. Isaac's Cathedral is the fourth tallest cathedral in the world after the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and St. Mary's Cathedral in Florence.

In 1839-1844, Russian court architect Andrey Stackenshneider was commissioned by Nicolas I to build the magnificent Mariinsky Palace for his daughter Maria. At the same time, the Blue Bridge spanning the Moyka was extended to 99 meters, making it the widest bridge in St. Petersburg. A large portion of the bridge is incorporated within St. Isaac's Square and can go unnoticed. In the years 1856-1859, an equestrian monument to Nicholas I was erected in the center of the square. The statue's engineering is unique due to the fact that the rearing horse's feet are the only two points of support for the entire sculpture.

In the beginning of the 20th century, the diverse architectural ensemble of St. Isaac's Square began to be filled with new styles. In the south-eastern side of the square, the Hotel Astoria, an excellent example of St. Petersburg Art Nouveau, was built by the architect Fyodor Lidval. At around the same time on the opposite side of the square a new German Embassy was designed by the distinguished German architect and industrial designer Peter Behrens. This building's muscular neoclassicism was widely criticized at the time, but proved a prototype for what became the official architectural style of the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin (the building was also purportedly greatly admired by Adolf Hitler).

In 1923 the square was renamed after one of the first Soviet diplomats, Vaclav Vorovsky, assassinated that year by a White emigre terrorist at the Conference of Lausanne, but in 1944 it returned to its historic name. During the Siege of Leningrad, a kitchen garden was laid out in the center of the square where vegetables were grown to feed the inhabitants of the war-torn city.

It is important to note that during its existence St. Isaac's Square has repeatedly been victim to St. Petersburg floods, as its location is close to the narrowest part of the Neva River. At such times, St. Isaac's Cathedral often became an island in a sea of water. Consequently in 1971, on the Moyka Embankment next to the Blue Bridge a "scale of Neptune" was installed - an obelisk that records the levels of major urban floods.

Today, the colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral offers a superb panoramic view of the square and all of downtown St. Petersburg.

Early years and family

Of aristocratic descent, his father was Claude-Florimond de Faÿ, comte de Coisse (1712–1790) [2] and his mother was Marie-Françoise (1712–1793), daughter of Nicolas de Vachon, marquis de Belmont .

De Faÿ joined the French Army as a Sous-lieutenant in the Gardes du Corps . [3] He was promoted Colonel of the 3rd Chasseurs-à-Cheval Regiment , 5 February 1792, before serving at Philippeville , Grisvelle and Maubeuge .

In August 1792, he was captured by the Austrians at Rochefort , being taken prisoner with Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette . However, his release was quickly negotiated while his brother was eventually released only after the Treaty of Campo-Formio in 1797.

De Faÿ then became an émigré living in Hamburg and Brussels . In 1804 at Utrecht , Colonel de Faÿ married Pétronille van Rijssel ( later styled marquise de La Tour-Maubourg), who predeceased him on 17 July 1844. [4]

His elder brother, Charles César de Fay de La Tour-Maubourg was also a French Army general, and his younger brother, Juste-Charles de la Tour-Maubourg was married to Anastasie de La Fayette (1777–1863).

At the end of 1799 de Faÿ returned to France and was posted to Egypt by the First Consul . There he served as Aide-de-Camp to General Jean Baptiste Kléber , who both received head wounds at Alexandria caused by an incendiary- device , 13 March 1801. After Kléber's assassination he was appointed AdC to General Jacques-Francois Menou .

Campaigns of 1805–1807

De Faÿ was present at the Battle of Austerlitz and served in Germany under General Édouard Jean Baptiste Milhaud , commanding the 22nd Chasseurs-à-Cheval Regiment , part of Marshal Joachim Murat 's Reserve Cavalry Corps ; shortly afterwards, on 24 December 1805, he was appointed Brigadier-General .

He then served in the War of the Fourth Coalition during the Prussia and Poland campaigns, and fought at Jena . He was then seconded to the 3rd Dragoon Division under General Carrière de Beaumont 's command. He was promoted Général de division on 14 May 1807 and commanded the 1st Dragoon Division at the Battle of Heilsberg ; [5] he suffered battle wounds at Friedland , where his division was supporting the right flank of Marshal Victor 's I Corps . [6]

Spain and Russia

In 1808, de Faÿ commanded the cavalry of the Armée du Midi under Marshals Jean-Baptiste Bessières , Claude Victor and Jean de Dieu Soult in the Spanish Peninsular War . He served at the Fall of Madrid, and at the battles of Uclés , Cuenca , Medellín , Talavera , Ocana , Gebora , Albuquerque , Albuera , [7] Usagre , Elvas , being wounded at Villafranca ; [8] one of his dispatches was intercepted and deciphered by the British. [9]

In May 1808, de Faÿ was created a Baron de l'Empire in addition to his ancient family titles: they were Counts of Coisse in France .

Baron de Faÿ de La Tour-Maubourg was appointed General commanding the IV Cavalry Corps for Napoleon's March on Moscow . He was wounded at the Battle of Borodino , was noted for his distinguished and gallant service at Mozhaysk leading France's Sacred Squadron , [10] and having survived the retreat, later commanded the I Cavalry Corps at Bautzen , Reichenbach [11] Goldberg , Lutzen , [12] and Dresden .

At Wachau , during the Battle of Leipzig , Baron de Faÿ's 1st Cavalry Corps along with François Étienne de Kellermann 's 3rd Cavalry Corps and the Empress' Dragoons charged the center of Eugen von Württemberg 's line; the Duke of Württemberg's Imperial Russian Guards then counter-attacked, stabilizing their position. [13] He lost a leg from the knee, famously stating when his valet wept upon sight of his injury: "What are you crying about, man, you have one less boot to polish". [14]

The amputation was administered by the celebrated French Army surgeon , Baron Dominique-Jean Larrey , who noted in his memoirs:

"he [ de Faÿ ] was hit by a small caliber ball which smashed his right knee to pieces, a serious wound which required amputation below the thigh, requested by the casualty himself: I immediately practised it under enemy fire. It was completed in less than three minutes". [15]

Restoration of the Monarchy

With the restoration of the Bourbons he swore allegiance to Louis XVIII and his loyalty to the king during the Hundred Days [16] was rewarded by being created a Pair de France , 1814 and advanced as Marquis in 1817.

De Faÿ served in several diplomatic posts, including appointment as Ambassador to London in 1819, where he corresponded with Lord Castlereagh . [17] He was briefly Minister of War (November 1819 – December 1821), and Governor of Les Invalides (December 1821), as well as sitting on the Tribunal which sentenced the French Marshal Prince Michel Ney to death.

In August 1831, he commenced negotiations with the Belgians (his wife's family was Flemish) regarding frontier forts, before the British intervened. [18]

Description

Palace Square s ituated in the heart of St Petersburg, it is the main square of the city, adored by its residents and guests. It’s one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles of the world. Best Russian architects worked on its creation. The name of the square comes from the Winter Palace , former imperial residence. The square was formed in the second half of the 18th — the first half of the 19th centuries. It’s 5,4 hectares in size and is surrounded by the cultural and historical monuments, such as Winter Palace, Guard Headquarters Building, General Staff Building with the Triumph Arch. In the centre of the square you can see the Alexander Column of 47,5 meters high. Nowadays Palace square is the centre of all public events and concerts, held in St Petersburg.

Spit of Vasilievsky Island (in Russian Strelka) is one of the oldest sights of Saint Petersburg. It was established in the times of Peter the Great as a business, educational and governmental centre of the city. Later became The architectural complex of the Spit is one of the most beautiful in Petersburg. Rostral Columns of 32 meters high and the Stock Exchange building are in the centre of the composition. Strelka represents a moderate foreland in the south-east part of Vasilievsky island, washed by Bolshaya and Malaya Neva. Great water area lets see a wonderful panorama.

Peter and Paul Fortress being one of the most interesting military, historic, and architectural monuments in the world, the Peter and Paul fortress attracts the attention of several hundred thousand tourists annually. Visiting the fortress gives one an opportunity to interact with the world the way it was 300 years ago, to visit a sight of antiquity in the middle of a metropolitan city. Taking a look at the main walls of the fortress, the cathedral and the administrative buildings, you get the chance to get acquainted with different examples of the architectural styles that existed from the beginning of the 18th century and until the beginning of the 20th century.

Senate Square is one of the oldest and well-recognized squares of St Petersburg. Senate Square started to form already in 1704, as a part of glacis next to the Admiralty which was initially planned not only as a shipyard, but also as a fortress. That’s why it was necessary to create free space around it. A monument to Peter the Great now well-known as Bronze Horseman was established in the middle of the squre in 1782. Since then the Square was called - Petrovskaya square. In 1829-1834, the Senate and Sinod Buildings in the style of late classicism were erected from the left end of the square. This is how it got its current name.

Isaac's Square is one of the most beautiful and majestic squares of Saint Petersburg. Its ensemble includes several buildings, but the main one is, of course, Isaac's Cathedral . Isaac square got its grand look in the second half of the 19th century when all the finishing works of the Cathedral were completed. The general idea to arrange the square that way belonged to the architect of Isaac’s Cathedral - Montferrand. In the centre of the square you’ll see the monument to Nicolas I installed in 1859. The western part of the square is locked by the Hotel Astoria , built to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Romanovs reign. At that time it was one of the best hotels in Europe.

They are separated by the main waterway of the city, the majestic Neva river and its tributaries, and are connected by the famous drawbridges of St. Petersburg - Blagovnschensky, Dvortsovy and Troitsky. Due to this, to the guests ’view there are magnificent panoramas of the Winter Palace, the Rostral Columns and a small island fully occupied by Peter and Paul Fortress, the very one from which the history of our city, now an open-air museum, began. Time is customized up to your wish.

Coffee Break

You may dine at a restaurant or cafe of your choice (I will offer options in accordance with the preferred kitchen).

Rest of the Tour

This part of the route lies at some distance from the central attractions, about five km from the Palace Square. Here in the 19th century there was the so-called unfair Petersburg, now, however, on the scale of the whole territory of the city it is, of course, also its central part. Here we are waiting for the Mariinsky Theater Square, St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, the Great Choral Synagogue, the Kryukov Canal with its famous site of seven bridges.
