There are a couple of moments in “Jerry Maguire” when you want to hug yourself with delight. One comes when a young woman stands up in an office where a man has just been fired because of his ethics, and says, yes, she'll follow him out of the company. The other comes when she stands in her kitchen and tells her older sister that she really, truly, loves a man with her whole heart and soul.

Both of those moments involve the actress Renee Zellweger , whose lovability is one of the key elements in a movie that starts out looking cynical and quickly becomes a heart warmer.

The man she follows, and loves, is Jerry Maguire ( Tom Cruise ), a high-powered pro sports agent who has so many clients he can't really care about any of them. He spends most of his time as a road warrior, one of those dogged joggers you see in airports, racking up the frequent flyer miles in pursuit of the excellence they read about in pin brained best-sellers. One night he has a panic attack in a lonely hotel room, and writes a memo titled “The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business.” One of the things he thinks is that agents should be less concerned about money and more concerned about their clients. That gets him a standing ovation in the office, but a few days later, when he's fired, he understands why agents do not say those things they think. Maguire stages a grandstand exit (his decision to take along the office goldfish plays awkwardly, however). But when he asks who's walking out with him, only Dorothy, an accountant he's met just once at the airport, stands up and says she believes in him. Dorothy is a widow with a cute little son (maybe just a mite too cute).

She also has an outspoken older sister, played by Bonnie Hunt with her usual exuberance and ironic cheer (she's almost always a delight to watch). The sisters live together in a house where the living room seems to be semi permanently filled by a kvetching self-help group for divorced women, who spend all of their time talking about men. Someone should tell them that resentment is just a way of letting someone else use your mind rent-free.

Only one client doesn't dump Maguire when the agency boots him out. That's Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a wide receiver for Arizona, who resents the crappy waterbed commercials Maguire puts him in, but sticks with him anyway. Rod's wife Marcee ( Regina King ) is her husband's shrewdest defender and biggest fan, and their marriage is a true love story--in contrast to Maguire's failing engagement to the power-mad Avery Bishop ( Kelly Preston ).

Avery is soon out of the picture, Dorothy begins to look less like an accountant and more like the most wonderful woman in the world, and under the influence of his ennobling new feelings, Jerry helps Rod learn to play from the heart and not just from the mind and the pocketbook. And somewhere along in there I began to feel that writer-director Cameron Crowe had bitten off more than he really needed to chew. The screenplay knows enough about sports agents to make that the subject of the whole film, and enough about romance, too, but there are so many subplots that “Jerry Maguire” seems too full: Less might have been more.

Still, the film is often a delight, especially when Cruise and Zellweger are together on the screen. He plays Maguire with the earnestness of a man who wants to find greatness and happiness in an occupation where only success really counts. She plays a woman who believes in this guy she loves, and reminds us that true love is about idealism. (Remember Franklin McCormick years ago on the all-night radio? “I love you because of who you are--and who I am when I am with you.”) The actual sports scenes are more predictable (right down to and including the big play that settles the season). But Cuba Gooding Jr., so strong in “Boyz N the Hood,” is fine here in a much different role. Finally the movie is about transformation: About two men who learn how to value something more important than money, and about two women who always knew.

Brief Synopsis

Jerry Maguire is a man who knows the score. As a top agent at Sports Management International, Jerry is unquestionably master of his universe. Trouble is, Jerry's mind, mouth and soul are usually on automatic pilot. He's good at friendship, but (as his numerous ex-girlfriends testify) bad at intimacy. Still, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Jerry that a sudden dose of failure can't cure. A week after spontaneously writing a stirring, visionary mission statement for SMI entitled "The Things We Think And Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business," he's unceremoniously fired. Stripped of his job and a good measure of his identity, the tenacious but hanging-by-a-thread Jerry is forced to start from scratch. He's joined on his journey to redemption by two unlikely allies: Rod Tidwell, a second-tier wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals; and Dorothy Boyd, a wistful 26-year-old single mother who departs her accountancy position with SMI for a very uncertain future with her new boss.

  • Luke Wilson was the early favorite to play Frank Cushman, but when Cruise was cast, he looked a little to similar to Tom and the role ultimately went to Jerry O’Connell.
  • Others considered for the role of Dorothy include Connie Britton, Mira Sorvino, Bridget Fonda, Marisa Tomei, Patricia Arquette, Cameron Diaz and Winona Ryder.
  • Legendary director Billy Wilder turned down the role of Maguire’s mentor agent, Dicky Fox. Crowe would end up writing “Conversations with Wilder” with Billy later.
  • Jay Mohr read for Matt Cushman and Todd the Nanny before being cast in the pivotal role of Bob Sugar.
  • Crowe regular Eric Stoltz’s character is named Ethan Valhere. Stoltz also played a character named Valhere in  Say Anything…
  • Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner makes a cameo as Scully, the head of SMI.
  • Musician Glenn Frey (The Eagles) plays Dennis Wilburn of the Arizona Cardinals.

  • “What do you think? Rod Tidwell in  Jerry Maguire , man. The whole thing just happened so beautifully. I was on my way to a press junket for an HBO movie and my agent called and said there’d be a read-through with Robin Williams today and would I want to go? I said, ‘Sure.’ When I got there Cameron Crowe said, ‘You know, this isn’t a Robin Williams movie. This thing stars Tom Cruise!’ It was so great. I’ve also enjoyed playing an art dealer in  Old Friends  with Jack Nicholson, because I loved the character and I love working with Jack. We’d be on the set and he would say, ‘You know, I was a 17-year-old runner for MGM the last time I was on this lot.’ Then he’d point to a soundstage and say, ‘Here is where Marlon Brando made the crew members wear kimonos.’ Every day he told a story that blew my mind.”
  • There were actually special effects done for  Jerry Maguire  by Banned From the Ranch. You can read about it  here .
  • Originally a fictional Reebok advertisement was shot by Reebok for inclusion at the end of the film over the closing credits. Cameron decided not to include the commercial, which features Cuba Gooding Jr. as athlete Rod Tidwell, in the theatrical version but the commercial was reinstated for initial viewings on Showtime. The commercial can be seen as an extra feature on the DVD and Blu-ray.
  • Crowe said this at the Writers Guild Foundation’s “Words Into Pictures” conference in May, 1997: “I was really amazed at how violently people reacted to the sex scene” between Tom Cruise and Kelly Preston. “It almost killed the film for some people. I now realize you have to give people (viewers) an escape hatch. I mean, they’re with a date.”

'Jerry Maguire' 25th Anniversary Of Tom Cruise And Cuba Gooding Jr. Repeatedly Yelling 'Show Me The Money'

By Brian Richards | Film | December 20, 2021 |

As far back as most of us can remember, most of the movies and television shows that we’ve watched and read about have centered around a limited number of occupations: cops, lawyers, doctors, firefighters, assassins, government agents, private eyes ( *claps* They’re watching you *clap-clap* ), and even accountants. And those movies and television shows have provided and still provide hundreds of hours of entertainment. (Even though many movies and television shows center around cops have been accused of being nothing more than ‘copaganda,’ which is something that talk-show host Amber Ruffin recently discussed in great detail ). But there’s one occupation that has received little to no attention from Hollywood:

Sports agents.

Most people had no reason to know or care about what a sports agent does, or how they do it, other than reading about the usual negotiations that occur in many a conference room somewhere. According to the fine people at Wikipedia:

A sports agent is a legal representative (hence agent) for professional sports figures such as athletes and coaches. They procure and negotiate employment and endorsement contracts for the athlete or coach whom they represent. Because of the unique characteristics of the sports industry, sports agents are responsible for communications with team owners, managers, and other individuals. Also, they are responsible for making recommendations. In addition to finding income sources, agents often handle public relations matters for their clients. In some large sports agencies, such as IMG, Creative Artists Agency, Roc Nation Sports, and Octagon, agents deal with all aspects of a client’s finances, from investment to filing taxes. Sports agents may be relied upon by their clients for guidance in all business aspects, and sometimes even more broadly…Due to the length and complexity of contracts, many sports agents are lawyers or have a background in contract law. Agents are expected to be knowledgeable about finance, business management, and financial and risk analysis, as well as sports…Other skills an agent must possess are excellent communication and negotiation skills. Agents must be highly motivated, willing to work long hours, and capable of multitasking. It is very common for agents to be in negotiations on behalf of several clients at one time.

Considering the hundreds of athletes who rely on sports agents to help further their careers, and the millions of dollars at stake when it comes to how much an athlete can gain or lose depending on the skill of their agents, many stories can be told about this particular industry. (Some of those stories were even told on the HBO series Arliss , which focused on a sports agent played by Robert Wuhl) And one of the first movies to tell such a story was Jerry Maguire , which opened in theaters on December 13, 1996.

With over seventy clients that require and demand his assistance and guidance, Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is one of the best and most successful sports agents currently working at Sports Management International (S.M.I.). When one of those clients is hospitalized after being seriously injured during a hockey game, that player’s son makes it very clear that he’s not impressed with Jerry’s willingness to overlook his father’s health and well-being for his benefit. Which then results in Jerry suffering a crisis of conscience, and deciding to pour his heart out on paper by writing a memo mission statement for what he believes should be the future of his company: fewer clients and less money, but with more honesty and a focus on developing greater relationships with those clients. This then results in S.M.I. choosing to fire Jerry, and leaving him with only one other employee who has his back: agency assistant Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), and with two clients remaining out of the seventy-two: quarterback Frank “Cush” Cushman (Jerry O’Connell), who expects to be the number one pick at the NFL Draft, and Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), a wide receiver with the Arizona Cardinals who is not happy with his present contract and wants Jerry to get him a better one as his football career begins to wind down. As he works to establish his own sports agency, Jerry grows closer to Dorothy, her son, Ray (Jonathan Lipnicki), and Rod, who all teach him that he has so much more to learn about being a better sports agent and more importantly, about being a better man.

From the opening scene, Jerry Maguire immerses the audience in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of sports agents, and shows how exciting and cutthroat it can be as Jerry and his colleagues put in work to negotiate for deals that help athletes stay in the spotlight while also staying very rich. And the world of sports agents and pro athletes appears to be no different than that of talent agents and actors/writers/directors/musicians in Hollywood, in terms of glad-handing, smooth-talking, and making sure to be in the right room with the right people so that everyone gets what they want, whether it’s a new and improved contract, a multimillion-dollar sneaker deal with Reebok, or just making sure that your client sees the light of day after being arrested for having little to no common sense.

During one crucial moment when Rod finally gets an offer from the Cardinals for his next contract, only for that offer to be an insult and a disappointment in terms of how much he is offered to stay playing for his team, Rod is understandably upset and confused as to what his next move should be, and Jerry lets him know that this is just the start of negotiations and that he can get him a better offer. But Marcee (Regina King), Rod’s wife, doesn’t believe him and doesn’t believe that Jerry is working hard enough to help her husband, enough that she’s willing to pick up the phone and call S.M.I. and get another agent. “What do you stand for, Jerry?,” Marcee says to him. “What do you stand for?!” And it’s a question that we see Jerry being forced to answer by everyone in his life. A little boy calls him out for being willing to put his father’s health at risk for money, and it results in a mission statement that gets Jerry sent to the unemployment line. His business relationship with Cush ends because his father, Matt (Beau Bridges), doesn’t like that Jerry is supporting and paying attention to Rod (or as Matt pointedly calls him, “the Black fella”) instead of making Cush his point of focus, and breaks his supposedly stronger-than-oak word by signing with Jerry’s protégé-turned-rival, Bob Sugar (Jay Mohr). His fiancée, Avery (the late, great Kelly Preston), makes Jerry realize that he doesn’t want to spend his life with someone who wears her lack of empathy as a badge of pride and ends their engagement. (Some say that Avery has a lack of empathy, others say that Avery knew her worth and refused to support her unemployed fiancé who couldn’t seal the deal and do his job) And as he grows closer to both Rod and Dorothy, they both force him to realize that his usual approach to getting things done no longer works. His “What can I do for you?” approach combined with his mega-watt smile that now exudes quiet desperation instead of confidence isn’t enough to keep him afloat as a sports agent (hence why Rod laughs in Jerry’s face during his “Help me help you ” speech and calls him out on it), and it certainly won’t work as a friend to Rod or as a husband to Dorothy. Instead, he has to follow the advice that he gives to Rod when it comes to wanting to achieve everything that he desires: play with his heart, and open his heart to show how much they both matter to him, and to actually have the Kwan.

Even though Jerry Maguire opened with surprisingly little buzz, as most of the attention was being paid to Mission: Impossible , Tom Cruise’s other film which was released earlier that same year, it wasn’t difficult for the film to win over both critics and audiences, and go on to become a box-office hit. It was beautifully written and directed by Cameron Crowe, who also wrote and directed Say Anything… and Singles . It had legendary cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, who blessed nearly every shot with so much warmth that it was impossible to not be absorbed in whatever was happening onscreen. And it was brought to life by an exceptional cast, including Cuba Gooding, Jr. as Rod Tidwell, whose talent and swagger and braggodoccio don’t change his knowledge of the fact that he has a limited shelf life as a football player, and is why he wants nothing more than to make sure that he and his family can live happily and comfortably for the rest of their days; Renée Zellweger as Dorothy Boyd (or as she calls herself, “the oldest 26-year-old in the world”), widowed single mother, former agency assistant who walks away from her job and becomes Jerry’s ride-or-die after reading his mission statement, only to ignore every red flag that he’s waving in her face, and fool herself into thinking that potential is a good enough reason to stay with him and to accept his marriage proposal; Bonnie Hunt as Laurel, Dorothy’s cynical and protective sister who offers advice to Dorothy on how to handle being around Jerry, while also making it very clear that she doesn’t approve of him and will f-ck him up if he breaks her heart; Regina King as Marcee, Rod’s wife who takes no bullsh-t from Jerry or from anyone else when it comes to her family; Jay Mohr as Bob Sugar, who fires Jerry and then ruthlessly takes almost all of his clients because as he puts it, it’s not show friends, it’s show business; Kelly Preston as Avery, who goes from being willing to have a threesome if it would make Jerry happy, to kicking the absolute sh-t out of him right after he breaks up with her ; Jonathan Lipnicki as Ray, Dorothy’s adorable and precocious son who immediately bonds with Jerry and who makes him smile with nearly every word that comes out of his mouth. (“Did you know the human head weighs eight pounds?”) Along with a supporting cast that included Donal Logue, Reagan Gomez, Aries Spears, Eric Stoltz (reprising his role as Vahlere from Say Anything… , only now he’s moved up in the world since he was last seen throwing graduation parties for high-schoolers), the late, great Glenn Frey (yes, that Glenn Frey ), and because it was centered around sports, there were plenty of cameos from both athletes and broadcasters, including Troy Aikman, Katarina Witt, Frank Gifford, Al Michaels, Drew Bledsoe, and many others.

There are a few other reasons as to why Jerry Maguire became a rom-com classic and a phenomenon that people couldn’t stop talking about, and that was the three most memorable quotes in the film: the first being “Show me the money.” This is Rod’s philosophy, and is also what Rod forces Jerry to say repeatedly, loudly, and passionately, for him to stay on as his client.

The other two reasons are “You complete me,” which is said by Jerry when he goes back home and gives an emotional speech in which he makes it crystal-clear to Dorothy how much he loves and misses her, and how he refuses to walk away from their marriage without a fight, and Dorothy’s response to everything that Jerry says to her in that speech: “You had me at hello.”

Dorothy’s line was so memorable that even The Joker couldn’t help but repeat it to Batman in The Dark Knight during their interrogation scene.

The film also went on to be nominated for three Golden Globes, with Cruise winning for Best Actor, and five Academy Awards, with Gooding Jr. winning for Best Supporting Actor, and giving a very memorable acceptance speech when he was on stage.

After the success of Jerry Maguire , Cameron Crowe went on to write and direct such films as Almost Famous (which won him a Golden Globe for Best Original Screenplay and a Best Supporting Actress win for Kate Hudson), Vanilla Sky, Elizabethtown, We Bought A Zoo , and Aloha (which resulted in Emma Stone apologizing to Sandra Oh at the 2019 Golden Globes for her involvement with the film), as well as creating the short-lived Showtime series Roadies , and helming such documentaries as Pearl Jam Twenty, The Union , and David Crosby: Remember My Name.

In January of 2010, shortly after Conan O’Brien realized that his dream of hosting The Tonight Show was going to become a nightmare , and that continuing to host the show was no longer an option for him, he gave a farewell speech on his final episode that ended with these words: “…All I ask is one thing, and I’m asking this particularly of young people that watch: Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. For the record, it’s my least favorite quality, it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen. I’m telling you, amazing things will happen. I’m telling you, it’s just true!”

It may be easy to mock and to scoff at Jerry Maguire in the years since its release and accuse it of being too cheesy, or worse, being a story that simply encourages codependency. But the film, much like its lead characters and also like Conan O’Brien, considers optimism to be a revolutionary act, enough to wear its heart on its sleeve, to not apologize for doing so, and to believe that amazing things sometimes can happen as a result of kindness and hard work. ( And Crowe is also a fan of legendary director Billy Wilder , so it also has enough bite to show that there is some truth in always staying gracious, because the best revenge is your paper )

Even as a cynic myself, I can recognize how optimism can be revolutionary at times when it’s needed most. And Jerry Maguire is a film that recognizes that, too.

25 years later, ‘Jerry Maguire’ may just be the most quotable movie of all time

A quarter of a century after we first met, he still completes us.

Yes, “Jerry Maguire,” the romantic comedy about a sports agent, played by Tom Cruise, whose conscience leads him to focus on providing more attention to fewer clients, is 25 years old.

Inspired by sports agent Leigh Steinberg, the film was a massive hit, earning four Academy Award nominations, including best picture, best actor for Cruise, best screenplay for writer-director Cameron Crowe and best supporting actor for Cuba Gooding Jr., who won the award for his portrayal of disgruntled wide receiver Rod Tidwell.

Tom Cruise In 'Jerry Maguire'

“When you make a movie or a TV show, even when it does well, when it comes out, you think, ‘That’s it.’ But here we are talking about ‘Jerry Maguire’ 25 years later,” Jerry O’Connell, who played Cush, told TODAY. “It’s crazy to me. It’s crazy.”

And that’s a big part of the mystique of “Jerry Maguire.” We are not only talking about the movie. We are talking the movie itself: The film features some of the most memorable lines in cinema history, lines that are just as fresh today as they were when we first heard them.

Cuba Gooding Jr And Tom Cruise In 'Jerry Maguire'

“Show me the money.”

“Help me help you.”

“You had me at ‘Hello.’”

“You complete me.”

“Did you know the human head weighs eight pounds?”

There are more great quotes, too, uttered by so many actors in the cast. “Show me the money” was named by the American Film Institute as the 25th greatest movie quote of all time, while “You had me at ‘Hello'" was No. 52.

JERRY MAGUIRE, Jerry O'Connell, 1996, (c)TriStar Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection

“For me, I think it’s a real quotable movie,” O’Connell said. “It’s funny. I’m going to sound really old now, but movies today, they’re not that quotable. You know what I’m saying?

“I mean, like, how many quotes came out of ‘Jerry Maguire’? ‘You had me at hello.’ I can’t tell you how many people yell ‘Show me the money’ at me. People yell ‘My word is stronger than oak.’ ‘I just want to play football’ will be yelled at me all the time. And that’s all Cameron Crowe, man. He wrote those words. Tell me a more quotable movie.”

O’Connell can’t single out one line that is his favorite, either, while noting not many films can compete with "Jerry Maguire."

Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger in Jerry Maguire, 1996.

“‘Help me help you’ I guess is one that I use a lot,” he said. “I dare you to show me a more quotable film than ‘Jerry Maguire.’ And, by the way, (it's) not just one character making these quotes. I mean, maybe ‘Caddyshack.’ OK, ‘Caddyshack, a lot of people quote that. But no, I don’t have one favorite line. It’s like asking, 'Do I have a favorite child?'"

The stellar writing and impressive performances fueled the movie, which grossed more than $150 million at the box office and instantly placed itself in the pantheon of pop culture reference points. At its core, though, “Jerry Maguire” is about the constitution of a man, the perfect vehicle for Cruise to show off a vulnerability and just why he has remained such a big movie star for decades.

Actor Cuba Gooding, Jr holds up his Oscar after wi

As the downtrodden agent who has to pivot to his one client — the disgruntled Tidwell after he’s spurned by O’Connell’s Cush — Jerry is determined to ride Tidwell to greatness. Tidwell, however, is hardly cooperative and Jerry's efforts are complicated by his lone employee, Dorothy Boyd, a single mother who longs to be inspired and sees greatness in Jerry.

The movie made a household name out of a young actor named Renee Zellweger, who played Dorothy. She would go on to collect two Oscars of her own, as well as earn two other nominations. The scene at the end of the movie where Jerry races home after Rod has his breakthrough game and pledges his love for Dorothy in her divorce support group is the stuff of cinematic legend and represented the pinnacle of this romantic comedy. Watching that scene again, it's hard not to get goosebumps.

Tom Cruise And Jonathan Lipnicki In 'Jerry Maguire'

“Jerry Maguire” works for so many reasons. The characters are truly memorable. Sure, we all remember Cruise, Gooding and Zellweger, but Jonathan Lipnicki’s portrayal of Ray is one of the great child performances we've witnessed on screen. Bonnie Hunt was on her game as Zellweger’s protective sister. Regina King — who herself would go on to win an Oscar — electrified the screen with her feisty performance as Tidwell's wife. Jay Mohr's slimy portrayal of Bob Sugar — a role O’Connell said he auditioned for — is memorable, while Kelly Preston shined as Jerry's ex-fiancée. Heck, even the minor roles, like the Kinko’s copy guy, Chet the nanny and Dicky Fox stood out. Everything clicked.

The movie provided the happy ending, too. The guy (Jerry) got the girl (Dorothy), while his business model took off. Times have changed, though, so would Jerry’s approach to his clients work today? O’Connell thinks he would find a way to adapt.

“Well, we all know he was a great agent, but he may not have conformed, if a lot of these agencies were sort of merging together and becoming sort of these über-corporations,” he said.

JERRY MAGUIRE -1996 JAY MOHR

“I don’t really see Jerry Maguire as being a big corporate person. So, he’s probably got a small boutique agency that not only handles sports figures, also handles online personalities. Jerry Maguire probably reps a lot of TikTok stars right now. And he knows how to handle them personally, and really make sure that they get all the attention that they need.”

“Jerry Maguire” also retained an element of authenticity that is key in a movie about sports . In this case, it featured actual NFL teams, with the center on Tidwell's Arizona Cardinals. That, coupled with the winning love story between Jerry and Dorothy, made it a must-see film.

Kelly Preston And Tom Cruise In 'Jerry Maguire'

“It’s one of those magic films because it involves the NFL, which a lot of movies don’t get to do because the NFL doesn’t very readily give up the rights to their trademark," O'Connell said. "But it’s also maybe one of the best romantic comedies ever of all-time. So everybody’s happy going to see this film on date night. And I mean, I’m still amazed that 25 years later, we’re still talking about it.”

In a time of reboots and sequels, there has been radio silence on revisiting this movie. O’Connell says there’s been no talk of another film.

“No, I’m so sorry. It just hasn’t. I just don’t think it’s come up,” he said. “And if it did come up, I don’t think I would be their first call. They’d probably want to call Tommy and Renee, you know?”

Show Me The Money: The 11 Best Quotes From Jerry Maguire

“Show me the money” isn’t the only memorable quote from this film. Keep reading to relive the movie all over again with these famous quotes from Jerry Maguire.

tom cruise cuba movie

The 1996 film, Jerry Maguire , starring Tom Cruise , Renee Zellweger , and Cuba Gooding Jr. , is one of the most acclaimed films of the nineties. It received a Best Picture nomination, and Cuba Gooding Jr. won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor . Not only is Jerry Maguire a great film, but it is full of famous movie quotes.

“Show me the money!” may be the most recognizable movie quote from Jerry Maguire, but it’s hardly the only one. In fact, according to the American Film Institute , the movie contains some of the greatest and most inspirational quotes in movie history.

So grab your goldfish , and let’s look at some of the most memorable quotes from Jerry Maguire .

“Show Me The Money”

Okay, let’s get one of the most famous Jerry Maguire quotes out of the way first.

“Show me the money” was ranked as the 25th best movie quote of all time by the American Film Institute. The line comes as Jerry, who has just been fired, frantically tries to retain his client roster for the new agency he intends to start.

He’s down to Rod Tidwell,(Amazon link) Cuba Gooding Jr. ‘s character — but Tidwell has some unique demands that Jerry first has to satisfy before he’ll sign with him:

  • Jerry Maguire : Show you the money.
  • Rod Tidwell : Oh, no, no. You can do better than that, Jerry! I want you to say it with you, with meaning, brother! Hey, I got Bob Sugar on the other line; I bet you he can say it!
  • Jerry Maguire : Yeah, yeah, no, no, no. Show you the money.
  • Rod Tidwell : No! Not show you ! Show me the money!
  • Jerry Maguire : Show me the money!
  • Rod Tidwell : Yeah! Louder!
  • Rod Tidwell : Yes, but, brother, you got to yell that shit!
  • Rod Tidwell : I need to feel you, Jerry!
  • Rod Tidwell : Jerry, you better yell!
  • Jerry Maguire : ( screaming ) Show me the money! Show me the money!

“You complete me.”

This great moment comes at the end of the movie, when Jerry’s emotional breakthrough is complete.

  • Jerry Maguire : I love you. You… you complete me.

There’s also a symmetry here. When Dorothy ( Renee Zellweger ‘s character) joins Jerry’s venture, they encounter a couple in the elevator, and the man signs this very phrase to his lover.

“You had me at hello.”

This memorable quote has also made it on the American Film Institute’s list, at #52. It comes at the end of the film, right after “you complete me,” in what is surely one of the most famous scenes in this great movie:

  • Jerry Maguire : I love you. You… you complete me. And I just…
  • Dorothy : Shut up… just shut up. You had me at “hello. You had me at “hello.”

“Help me help you.”

  • Jerry Maguire:  I am out here for you. You don’t know what it’s like to be ME out here for YOU. It is an up-at-dawn, pride-swallowing siege that I will never fully tell you about, okay? Help me… help you. Help me, help you.

“I had a breakdown. Breakdown? No, breakthrough.”

This might not be one of the most famous lines in Jerry Maguire . But it really sets up the premise of the movie. It comes at the beginning, as Jerry recounts the series of events that led him to change his entire thinking about his job as a sports agent.

As he puts it, he “had lost the ability to bullsh*t.” Maybe it looked like a mid-life crisis, or a mental breakdown. But it wasn’t. This is the mission statement that changes Jerry’s life and sets up the premise for the film.

  • Jerry Maguire : ( narrating ) Who had I become? Just another shark in a suit? Two nights later at a conference in Miami I had a breakdown. Breakdown? No, breakthrough. I couldn’t escape one single thought: I hated myself. No, no, here’s what it was: I hated my place in the world. I had so much to say and no one to listen. And then, suddenly, it happened. It was the oddest, most out-of-the-ordinary thing. I began writing what they call a mission statement. Not a memo, a mission statement. You know, a suggestion for the future of our company. A night like this doesn’t come along very often. I seized it. What started out as one page became twenty-five. Suddenly, I was my father’s son again. I was remembering the simple pleasures of this job, how I ended up here out of law school, the way a stadium sounds when one of my players performs well on the field. The way we are meant to protect them in health and in injury. There were so many clients that we forgot what was important. I wrote and wrote and wrote, and I’m not even a writer. I was even remembering the words of the original sports agent, my mentor, the late, great, Dickie Fox who said “The key to this business is personal relationships.” And suddenly, it was all pretty clear. The answer was fewer clients, less money. More attention. Caring for them. Caring for ourselves. And the games, too. Starting our lives. Really, I’ll be the first to admit, what I was writing was somewhat- touchy feely. I didn’t care. I had lost the ability to bullsh*t. It was the me I had always wanted to be. I ran out in the middle of the night to find an all night CopyMat before i could change my mind. It looked incredible. Even the cover looked like The Catcher in the Rye . I entitled it “The Things We Think And Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business.”
  • CopyMat Employee:  That’s how you become great, man. Hang your balls out there.
  • Jerry:  Thanks.

“That’s how you become great, man. Hang your balls out there.”

The first person to see Jerry Maguire’s new mission statement is an employee at CopyMat that helped print it. He offers this memorable quote of approval in the film.

  • Jesus Of CopyMat:  That’s how you become great, man. Hang your balls out there.

NERD NOTE:  If you are a fan of alternative and grunge music, then the person who plays the role of the Jesus of CopyMat in Jerry Maguire might look familiar. It’s none other than Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains . Cantrell is a friend of Cameron Crowe , the writer and director of Jerry Maguire. According to Cantrell, Crowe cast him in the film just so he could see Cantrell dressed up in preppy clothes.

“These fish have manners.”

In his final moments at the company that he helped found, Jerry Maguire gives an odd but memorable speech. He takes a fish with “manners” out of the office fish tank and makes a public request for some of his colleagues to follow him on his way out.

  • Jerry Maguire : Well, don’t worry. Don’t worry.  I’m not gonna to do what you all think I’m gonna to do, which is just FLIP OUT! But let me just, let me just say, as I ease out of the office I helped build — I’m sorry, but it’s a FACT! — that there is such a thing as manners, a way of treating people.
  • Jerry Maguire : (Noticing the fish tank nearby) These fish have manners. These fish have manners. In fact, they’re coming with me. I’m starting a new company, and the fish will come with me. You can call me sentimental. The fish — they’re coming with me.
  • Jerry Maguire : ( scoops a fish out of the tank ) Okay. If anybody else wants to come with me, this moment will be the moment of something real, and FUN, and inspiring in this god-forsaken business, and we will do it together. Who’s coming with me? Who’s coming with me? Who’s coming with me besides “Flipper,” here?
  • Jerry Maguire : ( looks around ) This is embarrassing. Wendy?
  • Wendy: Oh Jerry, I’m three months away from the pay increase.
  • Jerry Maguire : Ok. Ok. ( starts to walk out )
  • Dorthy: ( stands up ) I will go with you.
  • Jerry Maguire : ( happily surprised ) Dorothy Boyd, thank you!
  • Dorthy: ( whispers ) Right now?
  • Jerry Maguire : ( nods )
  • Coworker: ( quietly whispers ) Don’t do it.
  • Dorthy: ( sternly whispers ) Shhh!
  • Jerry Maguire : We’ll see you all again. Sleep tight.

“Did you know that the human head weighs 8 pounds?”

This list of famous quotes from Jerry Maguire wouldn’t be complete without a quote from the adorable Ray, played by a very young Jonathan Lipnicki . In the film, Jerry and Ray have great relationship and this scene is a great example of the on set chemistry between Tom Cruise and Jonathan Lipnicki.

  • Ray: Did you know that the human head weighs 8 pounds?
  • Jerry Maguire: Did you know that Troy Aikman, in only six years, has passed for 16,303 yards?
  • Ray: D’you know that bees and dogs can smell fear?
  • Jerry Maguire: Did you know that the career record for hits is 4,256 by Pete Rose who is NOT in the Hall of Fame?

NERD NOTE:  According to IMDB, child actor Jonathan Lipnicki was a little chatterbox during production of Jerry Maguire . One day he showed up on set telling everyone that “the human head weighs eight pounds”. After director  Cameron Crowe  heard the line, he thought it was so funny that he decided to add it to the script.

“Don’t cry at the beginning of a date. Cry at the end, like I do.”

In a movie with many funny quotes, this is one of the funniest.

It’s uttered by Dorothy’s overprotective sister, Laurel, when Dorothy and Jerry are about to go out on a first date. Dorothy, who’s pretty much always been in love with Jerry, gets a little teary; that’s when Laurel uses this line to get her sister to compose herself.

  • Laurel: Don’t cry at the beginning of a date. Cry at the end, like I do.

Throughout the movie, Laurel is always looking out for her little sister. It’s one of those beautiful aspects of the film — it’s not all about the relationship between Jerry and Dorothy. There are plenty of great side relationships, too, including that between Laurel and Dorothy, and between Jerry and Rod.

“I love him for the man he wants to be. And I love him for the man he almost is.”

Dorothy and Jerry’s romantic life is a big part of the movie’s story arc.

Jerry’s job is his whole life, and his budding relationship with Dorothy seems—at least for Jerry’s part—very workmanlike. But not so for Dorothy. She’s admired him from the beginning, even before his life-changing “mission statement.”

This line comes after their first night together, when Dorothy gushes to her sister about her love for Jerry, and her optimism about what he can become:

  • Dorothy : I love him! I love him for the man he wants to be. And I love him for the man he almost is.

“I love my wife. I love my life. And I wish you my kind of success.”

Finally, we have this gem from the close of the movie.

Throughout the film, we get little snippets of advice from Jerry’s “late, great mentor” Dicky Fox . They often correlate with some part of Jerry’s emotional journey, and the closing line pretty much sums up Jerry’s final discovery of happiness:

  • Dicky Fox : Hey, I don’t have all the answers. In life, to be honest, I failed as much as I have succeeded. But I love my wife. I love my life. And I wish you my kind of success.

What's Going On With Tom Cruise's Space Movie? Here's What Elon Musk Says

Elon Musk speaks out on Tom Cruise's plan to make a movie in space.

Elon Musk on Saturday Night Live

Tom Cruise is a guy who is willing to perform incredible feats for the sake of his movies. He insists on doing his own stunts, which has resulted in Cruise free climbing buildings and jumping off cliffs. At this point, it seems the only thing Cruise hasn’t done is spacewalk, and that's potentially in the cards. There has been talk in the past about Tom Cruise filming a movie in space , but for that to happen, somebody has to be able to get him up there. On that note, Elon Musk has been linked to the production for a while and has now provided an update on its status.

The SpaceX CEO recently caught up with ET at the Breakthrough Prize ceremony and discussed a few topics with the news outlet. Eventually, he provided some thoughts on Tom Cruise's proposed space movie. The tech magnate revealed that he's spoken to the A-lister, but the latter half of his update may disappoint some people:

Tom Cruise has said he wants to do Mission: Impossible in space. We've had some discussions, but I'm not sure where his mind is at.

While Elon Musk calls it “ Mission: Impossible in space,” he’s likely conflating the actor's major franchise with the space movie idea, which as far as we know are separate projects. There have been no indications, at this point, that the Oscar nominee's plans to film a movie in space also involve the M:I franchise. Still, Musk, or somebody like him, is going to be key to a project like this. The most complex part of the whole endeavor would be figuring out how to get the Top Gun icon, any other needed actors, and all the necessary equipment, from Earth into orbit, and that's where Space X would come in.

Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt on boat with other Mission: Impossible protagonists

Why Tom Cruise Fired Mission: Impossible’s Insurance Company

We don’t know what the upcoming Tom Cruise movie set in space would be about, and it's not even clear just how many people within his inner circle are aware of that info. While the expectation is that only part of the Cruise movie would occur in space , there are a lot of unknowns here.

Per reported details on the space movie , frequent Cruise collaborator Doug Liman is working on a script and plans to direct the project as well. Perhaps, now that Liman’s done with Road House , which he wanted a theatrical release for, he’ll have more time to dedicate to Cruise's cosmic movie.

It’s maybe not surprising that there hasn’t been a lot of movement on the actor's feature. He’s been pretty busy filming two back-to-back Mission: Impossible movies, one of which had to struggle through a global pandemic. He’s had a lot going on and probably hasn’t had the time to focus on his potential movie in outer space. His film aimed to be the first to be shot in outer space. However, a Russian production ended up winning that space race , becoming the first to shoot scenes outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Generally speaking, what Tom Cruise wants, Tom Cruise gets, so it seems likely that if the actor wants to shoot a movie in space, it will happen eventually. When any of this could actually happen is still very much an open question. We know that Top Gun 3 is also in development and, if Cruise does go to work on that after finishing the (now-untitled) Mission: Impossible sequel, then his dreams of heading to space (with the help of Elon Musk) will have to wait even longer.

Quentin Tarantino ditches plans for his final movie, which would have reportedly starred Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as a returning character

The Movie Critic is no longer in the works

Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

The Movie Critic will no longer be Quentin Tarantino's tenth and final movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter , with the director returning to the drawing board for his last feature film.

The now-scrapped project, which would have been set in 1977 and followed a cynical movie critic, was set to star Brad Pitt – and he was reportedly set to return as his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood character, stuntman Cliff Booth. Tom Cruise and John Travolta were also rumored to be circling the project . According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director, who has long said he would only direct 10 movies, had a change of heart about The Movie Critic and has moved away from it entirely.

Tarantino's last movie was 2019's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. In the time since his most recent big-screen release, Tarantino has turned his attention to the world of publishing – he has written a novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and a non-fiction book, Cinema Speculation, which is a deep-dive into '70s movies and was inspired by the work of the critic Pauline Kael.

The filmmaker was also set to helm a Star Trek movie with The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith, announced back in 2017, which reportedly featured time travel and "gangster scenes," but that project never got off the ground either.

While we wait for Tarantino's final project to hit the big screen, check out our guide to the biggest upcoming movies on the way in 2024.
