I booked a trip to Egypt last year in September 2023, Mina was out tour guide, he’s very helpful and kind. We celebrate the birthday of some travelers during our visit to Egypt, always with a cake or a dessert! We had a great time, the trip was amazing and very comfy thanks to him.

The tour was fantastic! A lot of early morning starts, however it meant we were able to see all the sights we wanted to, maximising our time! The guides were all so knowledgeable and friendly. The accomodation and food was great, however the cruise boat was a bit loud when sailing at night. Highlights were the hot air balloon, Abu Simbel and Karnak temple.

Unforgettable journey! They took care of everything, huge shout-out to our awesome guides Bassem and Ibrahim. Never felt rushed or unsafe. They offering amazing add-ons like camel ride, Luxor hot air balloon, Abu Simbel temple trip (a must-see), and more. For 9 days, we experienced so much—truly unforgettable! ACCOMMODATION MEALS GUIDE My recent Egypt trip with Vacations To Go Travel was truly unforgettable! Just like my travel companion, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Bassem, our guide, was exceptional, and the Nile cruise was a highlight. Despite the early start for day tours, especially during Ramadan when days were shorter, I didn't regret traveling during that month. Ramadan turned out to be a wonderful experience! The hotel in Cairo provided iftar arrangements at sunset, and it was heartwarming to see locals joining in. The decorations for this holy month, both at the hotel and in the streets, added a special touch to our stay, particularly in Luxor and Aswan. Exploring the local culture and observing the deep connection the Egyptian people have to their religion, beliefs, and traditions was a highlight for me. Their kindness and friendliness were truly remarkable. I also loved the concept of free food on tables in the streets across every city in Egypt—it's a beautiful display of community spirit. I can't wait to return and explore more. Thank you, Vacations To Go Travel, for an incredible journey! - Aliyah

Holiday In Egypt 4 Days – 3 Nights Nile Cruise From Cairo by Flight

The Nile cruise was a highlight of our program in Egypt. There’s no way we would’ve been able to see all the temples and tombs without the cruise making it so easy. Everything was well organized and the team was always available via WhatsApp. We had a great group with our guide Wael. He looked after us very well during the entire trip.

We had Ramy Hawdy as our tour guide. Ramy was very knowledgeable about everything and was such a stand up, professional. I've been on a lot of tours and trips, and he's one of the best I've ever worked with. We also liked eating with the local people and visiting the animal non-profit. All of the meals were tasty, the cars were on time, and the hotels/staff were all very friendly. In all, this was our first time using Intrepid and there's a very strong chance we'll use your service again in the future. Thanks again! It was an amazing experience. Best, Adam

Egypt Nile Adventure

Astounding. Breathtaking. A glimpse into the past of the greatest civilization on Earth. George (Tamer) was our guide. I have never taken a tour before, and George's know how, knowledge, and personality had no bounds! He is the BEST tour guide, over flowing with love of his past and a passion that shines. Our 9 days were packed, which I love! You can sleep when you get home, but in the mean time, I tried to do all the extra excursions, because why not?! I love Egypt and it's profound history. This opportunity was a dream come true for me as an archaeologist! I HIGHLY recommend this tour and George!!! George is attentive, always made sure we understood and was clear on the days proceedings. I didn't have to worry about a thing, because George was on the ball 100% of the time. Please go. Please absorb. Thank you George, Egypt, my Phoenix group, Tour Radar, and Expat for an experience and perspective I'm still processing.

The history presented each day by guides was exceptional. The overall all tour could be better received if the tour leader was more organized and informative in our planned daily agenda. The Nile cruise was a good opportunity to bond with other passengers but the food was nothing to write home on. For the value it’s a four star rating.

King Ramses - 13 days Tour

King Ramses - 13 days

Egypt is amazing! From the time we landed in Cairo to the time we left, we never once felt unsafe or unwelcome. The local people were all so warm, friendly and welcoming. Our tour was incredible, and that was in large part to our guide MoMo, who was so knowledgeable and passionate about all things Egypt. He was so friendly, funny and made our small group of strangers feel like a family after the first day. The information he shared was very indepth and insightful and I came away from this trip wanting to learn even more about the history of Egypt. Although we covered many miles visiting so many wonderful sites from Cairo to Giza, Kom Ombo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Agilika Island and Luxor, we still had time to visit a local perfumery, an alabastor workshop, a papyrus factory and a spice store to pick up treasures to take home. There was also free time for us to enjoy taking in the sites of the small villages and farms as we relaxed on the deck of our Nile Cruise, and spending time on the beaches in Hurghada. Besides MoMo, I want to thank the whole On-The-Go team from those guides whom we only spent a day or two with, plus the drivers and to all those people involved in the organizing of this tour for making this a truly amazing experience! If Egypt is not on your bucket list, it should be as you will never regret making the journey.

ENJOY EGYPT’S AMAZING SCENERY ABOARD NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO TO LUXOR AND ASWAN

Nile Cruises from Cairo

For many years, Nile cruises from Cairo south towards Luxor were non-existent, but in 2015, they began again and are among the most popular trips booked by travelers from all over the world. Known as the “long cruise”, it is one of the few ways to take in some of the most notable sites from the Ancient Egyptian past in style and comfort. Actually, every day of a Nile cruise includes a major site, or two (or three!).

In fact, one travel expert in the region said this of the Nile cruises from Cairo, “The sites of the reopened section are smaller, quieter and more personalized and would be otherwise almost impossible to reach.

They include Tuna el-Gebel (the necropolis of the city of Hermopolis, sacred to Hermes), the former capital Tel el Amarna (built by pharaoh Akhenaten), Beni Hassan, Abydos and Denderah…As well as being chock-full of factual detail [cruise] tours thankfully allowed for time to absorb the sites and scenes.”

And because most Nile cruises from Cairo include at least one onboard expert (whether an Egyptologist, archaeologist, historian, and so on) offering lectures and guided tours, your experience is much richer. Additionally, even larger vessels contain relatively small groups, ensuring flexibility and far more attention from the crew and the staff.

THE SENSORY APPEAL OF NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

nile cruises from cairo to luxor

Yet, there is also much to be said about the experience of sailing up the famed river and experiencing the landscape in such a direct way. It is really only Nile cruises from Cairo that allow you to hear the sounds of farmers singing to their cattle, kids splashing around at the shore, and the magical tunes of songbirds all along the journey. Wake before sunrise to see the whole world change or dazzle at the twinkling stars overhead as you dine or lounge on the upper deck of your ship.

Naturally, it is the sites you visit that make the cruise such a must for those who want to get the very most out of a visit to Egypt. Most of the cruises are meant to take you from or to Cairo and will be at least ten days or more. Some head downriver from Aswan and all of the way to Cairo, while some take a reverse route and head upriver from Cairo and to Luxor and Aswan. For those who wish to see Abu Simbel and the many Nubian sites preserved along the shores of Lake Nasser, a cruise can be added to the journey before or after the Nile cruise ends.

The long cruise to or from Cairo does include those lesser-known but essential sites that are such significant areas from the Ancient Egyptian past. If you begin at Cairo, your journey is likely to include a day or two of guided touring around the city. This will mean a visit to the Giza Plateau and such appealing spots in Cairo as the Egyptian Museum, the Khan el Khalili marketplace, and more. Once on board and sailing, a visit is likely to feature stops at:

  • Beni Suef  – The base from which you can pay a visit to the stunning pyramids at Maydoum and Dahshur. This includes the Red and Black pyramids, the oldest structures using the pyramid form.
  • Minya  – Close to Tuna el-Gebel, the boundary of Akhenaten’s famed city and the border area between Upper and Lower Egypt at Ashmunein. The tombs of the pharaoh and other royals are in this area, as well.
  • Tell el Amarna  – The actual capital during Akhenaten’s rule. He removed it from Luxor and established his unique period of worshipping a single god – the Aten – from here. Upon his death, it was abandoned and even partially destroyed. Yet tombs and some outlining structures of the great city remain.
  • Abydos  – The oldest city of Ancient Egypt is here and some of the art is still stunning to behold. Sites such as Sohag and El Balyana are also nearby and often featured in a day trip to the area.
  • Quena  – This is a not-to-be missed stop on Nile cruises from Cairo as it is home to the amazing Dendara Temple. Completed late in the Pharaonic era, it is thought to be one of the finest and most well-preserved temples remaining. It is also home to the much-debated relief known as the Dendara Light.

After that, you reach Luxor and spend days exploring sites such as the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and Deir el Bahri. There are also the East and West Banks of the river with its own array of famous temples (including the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes) and so much more. This area is also home to sites like the temples at Edfu and the dual temple of Kom Ombo. If heading to Aswan, sites such as Philae, the High Dam and so much more await.

Ranging in length from ten days to two weeks (or more), Nile cruises from Cairo encapsulate the magic that most envision the moment the words “Nile cruise” are spoken.

THE OPTIONS FOR NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

Unlike cruises from Luxor and southward towards Aswan, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are on the more modern, luxury cruisers. Felucca and dahabiyah journeys don’t usually appear among the options, yet this does not mean a five-star journey is unavailable. In fact, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are like premium hotels with fine food, beautiful accommodations, attentive service, and even options for spa or salon services, evening parties and events, entertainment and more.

Additionally, many Nile cruises from Cairo are all-inclusive, meaning that ground transport, entrance fees, and all but your pre-arrival and post-departure costs are included in your booking.

Setting sail to or from Cairo is a treat as it is one of the few ways to reach, enjoy and explore some of the most astonishing sites in Egyptian history. The first pyramids, the oldest cities and the most dazzling sights await you, making it an ideal time to book your Nile cruise from Cairo right away.

Your tour of the four tombs typically lasts for about one and a half hours, after which everyone will return to the boat. You will some time to relax and to freshen up, and then it will be time to sit down for another splendid onboard dinner. After dinner, you can enjoy a delightful Folkloric show on the boat, or you can simply have the evening to yourself. Tonight the ship will remain tied up at Minya.

You will also be visiting the Great Palace of King Akhenaten, the Small temple of Aten, and the great temple of Aten. The average visit to these sites lasts for about two and a half hours, after which you will board your tour bus again for the journey bake to your ship.

After boarding, the ship will depart, and it will later come to a stop on the water in front of the fascinating Prince Tawdrous Monastery, allowing you to admire this wonderful site from the water. The Mövenpick MS Darakum will remain tied up at this location at Asyut for the night.

Day 8 – Leisurely cruise to Sohag

Day 8 of your Cairo to Luxor Nile cruise is all about relaxing and leaving your troubles behind. In the evening, there will also be a Black and White party onboard, and all passengers are encouraged to partake in the fun.

Day 9 – Sail to El Balyana and on to Qena

Wake up and enjoy a hearty onboard breakfast while the river cruiser makes its way to El Balyana. On arrival, you will disembark, and you will be taken to visit Abydos Temple for some great photo taking opportunities. You will then head back to the ship in time for lunch, and it will sail to Qena via the impressive Naga Hammadi Bridges, finally arriving in Qena in time for a good dinner.

After dinner, enjoy a fun-filled Contest Party, and be sure to get a good night’s sleep on the water at Qena

Day 10 – Temple Visit and Cruise to Luxor

After enjoying another good breakfast onboard the vessel, you will disembark for an excursion to the ancient Dendera Temple which is about a 20-minute drive away. This is another historical site which is off the main tourist trail, and it is certainly a place which is well worth visiting.

After your visit, you will be driven back to the boat, and it will then start navigating its way to Luxor, with lunch being served along the way. In the afternoon while you are sailing to Luxor, there will be an authentic Egyptian Belly Dancing Show onboard which all passengers are welcome to attend.

In the early evening dinner will be served, and the remainder of the night is free for you to enjoy the way you want to enjoy it before finally retiring for a good night’s sleep in the comfort of your luxury cabin while the boat is tied up at Luxor.

Day 11 – Full Day of Sightseeing at the West Bank

Day 11 of your Cairo to Luxor Nile cruise is going to be a busy day, so be sure to enjoy a good breakfast onboard in the morning. Once everyone has finished eating, you will be going on a tour of Luxor’s West Bank which is home to some of Egypt’s most famous ancient attractions, including Valley of the Kings, and Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple.

The whole day is dedicated to sightseeing, and you can expect to spend most of the morning strolling through the Valley of the Kings. This is an ancient necropolis, and home to more than 60 royal tombs, including the tomb of King Tutankhamen.

In the afternoon you will return to the ship for another great lunch, and then you will be taken to see and explore the magnificent mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Finally, you will head back to the ship again where you will have a bit of free time before sitting down to a wonderful 5-Star dinner. Enjoy the rest of the evening as you wish, and enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep on the water at Luxor.

Day 12 – Luxor East Bank Sightseeing and Fly to Cairo

Wake up to yet another smashing onboard breakfast, and prepare yourself for a morning of unforgettable discoveries. Today will see you going on an excursion to Luxor’s East Bank where you will be visiting two truly remarkable historical sites, Karnak Temple and Luxor temple.

Both sites will amaze you, but one will both amaze you and astonish you. Rather than just being one ancient temple, the Karnak complex is essentially the ruins of a sprawling ancient temple city. Construction was ongoing for more than 2,000 years, and the site covers thousands of square meters. It really is a sight to behold.

After your sightseeing tour, you will return to your cruise liner for lunch, and then it will be time for you to disembark. One of our tour managers will be standing by to meet and greet you, and they will then escort you to Luxor Airport where you will be boarding a flight back to Cairo.

From Cairo to Luxor: 6 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Jess Lee Updated Jul 13, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Home to some of the country's most famous sights including the colorful tombs of the Valley of The Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the colossal Temples of Karnak, Luxor is top of most people's hit list when it comes to Egypt travel itineraries.

It's no surprise then that many visitors head straight to this world-famous historic site, once the power-center of the Middle Kingdom pharaohs, after their time spent exploring Cairo .

Fortunately several options for getting from Cairo to Luxor are available for travelers.

On This Page:

  • From Cairo to Luxor by Train
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Sleeper Train
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Nile Cruise
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Airplane
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Flight Day Tour
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Bus

1. From Cairo to Luxor by Train

Medinat Habu Temple on Luxor's west bank

Several trains run daily between Cairo's Ramses Train Station and Luxor Railway Station from 8am to 11pm. If you're staying at a hotel in Giza, you can also board all the same services to Luxor at Giza Railway Station.

There are two train types: The "Special" class trains (five services daily) have newer rolling stock and more comfortable carriages.

The "Spanish" class trains (four services daily) are cheaper and older.

All trains offer a drink and food trolley service that rattles through the carriages intermittently throughout the journey, but it's a good idea to bring along snacks and a picnic meal.

The first class carriages in both come with roomier seats and better bathroom facilities, so are well worth shelling out for. First class tickets range from 151EGP (US$9.60) to 255EGP (US$16.30) depending on the train.

Travel time between Cairo and Luxor is supposed to be around 10.5 hours but is more typically around 12.

You definitely want to try and bag a window seat, as one of the great joys of train travel along this route is watching the lush Nile-side countryside of green fields and date palms passing by. Take one of the two morning trains to make the most of the view.

If you're planning to travel on one of the overnight services, note that both types of trains are seater only. There are no sleeper carriages.

This is the most popular method of public transport to Luxor for Egyptians, as well as foreign visitors, so try to book train tickets at least a few days in advance.

The major downside of train travel along this route is that unfortunately, some staff at both Ramses Train Station and Luxor Railway Station will attempt to refuse foreign travelers tickets on these trains and will tell you that you are only allowed to use the (much more expensive) sleeper service. This dates from a previous official travel restriction, which has since been revoked by the government.

If you are having trouble booking a train ticket, most hotels can send someone to the station to do it for you for a small fee. You can also now book online tickets on the Egyptian National Railways website .

2. From Cairo to Luxor by Sleeper Train

Row of ancient sculptures of criosphinx in Karnak Temple, Luxor

The Watania Sleeper Train is a slice of old-fashioned rail travel .

It departs every evening from Ramses Train Station in Cairo at 7.45pm (and 20 minutes later at Giza Station) and travels overnight to arrive in Luxor at 6.15am.

Tickets can be purchased from the Watania Sleeper Train office at Ramses Train Station, or you can book online .

It's best to book a few days in advance. It costs US$84 for a bed in a two-bed cabin or, if you're a solo traveler and don't want to share a compartment, US$126 for a single cabin. There is also a seater-only carriage with good-sized seats that can recline. A seater-only ticket costs US$42.

All tickets can only be booked using credit cards, US dollars or Euro. The ticket price includes both dinner (with a choice of chicken, beef, fish, or vegetarian) and breakfast.

The sleeper compartments are compact but tidy with a small washbasin and bunks that fold out from the wall. Bedding is provided, and the included meals are brought to you in-room.

Although tickets are rather expensive for the facilities provided, nothing can beat falling asleep on your bunk to the steady sway of the train tracks and waking up in the morning to the green fields of the Nile.

3. From Cairo to Luxor by Nile Cruise

Nile cruisers docked in front of Luxor Temple

The most luxurious way to travel from Cairo to Luxor is by Nile Cruiser.

Harking back to the early days of Egypt tourism, when European travelers first explored the country by boat, this slow cruise up the Nile River usually takes 12 days (including sightseeing days in both Cairo and Luxor while onboard).

This is a no-hassle and stylish sightseeing and transport all-in-one , stopping at all the important historic sites, such as Tell El Amarna and Abydos , along the way.

Only a few of the bigger Nile cruise operators, such as Mövenpick, operate this route, with sailings departing from Cairo once a month from February to June and September to November.

Prices, which include all meals and sightseeing tours as well as a range of on-board evening events, start from around US$700.

4. From Cairo to Luxor by Airplane

Hot air ballooning over Luxor's west bank

Egypt Air flies four times daily direct to Luxor International Airport from Cairo International Airport.

Flights take one hour, and ticket prices start at around US$145 in the high season from December to February. If you're traveling in low season, flight prices usually drop to around US$75.

Luxor flights depart from Cairo Airport's Terminal Three.

In minimal traffic conditions (before 7am and late at night) a taxi to Cairo Airport from the central city only takes around 30 minutes. At any other time of day, make sure to add in an hour for taxi transport time.

Luxor Airport is seven kilometers from central Luxor. There is no public transport into the center, so you need to either use one of the airport taxis or book a private transfer with your Luxor hotel.

5. From Cairo to Luxor by Flight Day Tour

Tomb interior in the Valley of the Kings

If you really have very little time up your sleeve, it is possible to take a day tour to Luxor from Cairo by flying there and back in one day.

If you want to do this, prepare for a very long day of between 12 and 15 hours door to door, and an early start. Most tours pick up from your Cairo hotel between 4am and 5am, and the return time to Cairo is around 7pm.

Also realize there is only so much you will be able to see of Luxor with just one day, so your sightseeing will be limited to the big-hitter sites: usually the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and maybe Medinat Habu Temple on Luxor's west bank and Karnak Temple and/or Luxor Temple on the east bank.

These tours normally include a private driver, who transfers you to and from the airport in Cairo, and a professional Egyptologist guide and driver in Luxor, who accompanies you from Luxor Airport for the day.

The Private Day Tour of Luxor by Air offers a solid itinerary for this style of tour. The tour includes pickup and drop-off from your Cairo hotel to Cairo Airport, return flight costs to Luxor, the services of an Egyptologist guide and driver for the entire time you're in Luxor, and lunch. The tour visits the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut Temple for guided tours and includes a stop at the Statues of Memnon on the west bank, and guided tours of both Karnak and Luxor Temples on the east bank.

6. From Cairo to Luxor by Bus

Hatshepsut Temple on Luxor's west bank

Several bus companies run bus services between Cairo and Luxor.

The vast amount of services are overnight. Go Bus, Super Jet, and Upper Egypt Travel are the main companies operating this route.

Go Bus departs Cairo from their conveniently located office, just off Tahrir Square in the central city. Super Jet and Upper Egypt Travel buses leave from Cairo Gateway Bus Station, also in the central city.

All the bus companies arrive in Luxor at their individual offices, which are handily located in Luxor center, near the train station. Travel time is around 11 hours, and tickets cost between 195 EGP (US$12.45) and 430 EGP (US$27.45).

Buses stop every three hours or so for breaks at rather ramshackle highway service stations with bathrooms and restaurants. It's a good idea to bring plenty of snacks, though.

Note that even if you take a day service, you won't get many views on this route, as buses take the desert highway rather than following the Nile.

Next, you visit The Luxor temple and wander amid the eras of Amenhotep III (1390-52 BC), Tutankhamun (1336-27 BC), Horemheb (1323-1295 BC) and Rameses II (1279-13 BC).

Finally, your representative returns you back to your Nile Cruise.

Everything You Need To Know Before Embarking On A Nile River Cruise

A Nile cruise is on nearly every international traveler’s wish list. The wonders of ancient Egypt go way beyond the pyramids and the sphinx, with countless treasures lying further south, a stretch away from Cairo, lying either within reach of Luxor or Aswan, which is why most people opt for a cruise between the two cities, stopping off at the most important sites along the way.

Having visited Cairo before, a Nile cruise had been on my wish list for years until I finally found the right ship, which I knew I would enjoy, together with the right duration of cruise and itinerary to suit me. It took a lot of research and some luck to chance upon the cruise that was right for me: very small, few people, historic connections, a touch of the glamor of 1920s- and 1930s-style travel, and plenty of class. I found my ideal cruise on the SS Sudan , the last true paddle steamer on the Nile, the one Agatha Christie sailed on and where she wrote Death on the Nile — and where the subsequent movies were filmed. Small enough to allow for privacy, large enough for comfort, with a five-night, six-day itinerary between Luxor and Aswan.

But what is perfect for me isn’t necessarily perfect for everybody else. Some might want a pool, a shop, more people to socialize with, or maybe more modern cabins, and probably going from Aswan to Luxor, or even cruising the whole way from Cairo to Aswan. Timing is crucial as well, as is deciding what to do at either end. There are many things to consider before embarking on a Nile cruise, so, here I have listed a few points to mull over and research before you book yourself that trip of a lifetime.

Up Or Down River?

Let’s start with some nomenclature you will need to go along the right route: Cruising up the Nile means you are going south, toward the source of the Nile, which, by the way, I recently discovered in Uganda. Cruising down the Nile is sailing toward the estuary in the Mediterranean. But, just to confuse things, Upper Egypt is in fact southern Egypt, while Lower Egypt is in the north, by the coast.

Most Nile Cruises, except for the ones setting off from Cairo and cruising all the way up the Nile, actually sail only in Upper Egypt, between Luxor and Aswan.

I am unsure about what the statistics are when it comes to preferences, but all the cruise ships in Upper Egypt either cruise from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor. Both Luxor and Aswan have airports you can fly into from Cairo, the main international airport in Egypt, so the choice really is yours. That said, personally, I felt that going from Luxor to Aswan was my preferred option simply because — in my mind — Aswan is so much prettier than Luxor. And from Aswan, you can travel to the temples in Abu Simbel, leaving you with the best bit at the end of your journey. But many people would argue the opposite and there really is no right or wrong.

Hotels At Either End

While many travelers, mostly those who are time poor, head straight from the airport to the cruise ship and, once docked after the cruise, fly straight back out again, I would like to plead for a night or two at either end. Not only does it give you the option of overcoming any jet lag or travel fatigue, but also there are some lovely historic hotels that are worth spending a night in. In Luxor, the famous Winter Palace is a historic hotel, a little frayed around the edges, but with a fabulous garden and a pedigree of former guests that is hard to beat. The only place that can beat the guest list of the Winter Palace is the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan where Agatha Christie stayed at the end of her cruise, and you can take a tour through numerous suites named after illustrious guests who stayed there over the last century. And the hotel offers rooms with some of my favorite views in the world .

What Kind Of Boat

There are essentially four types of boats on the Nile that can take you from A to B. There are modern cruise ships, relatively small when compared to ocean-going cruise ships with around 50 cabins, but many with swimming pools, cabins with balconies, and shops and restaurants on board. There is the SS Sudan , alone in its class, without amenities such as pools or shops, but with only five suites and 18 cabins, plus a superb sundeck, a bar, and a restaurant. Then there are the dahabiyas, beautiful boats with a sail at either end — and even more private with many only catering to around 12 passengers. The dahabiyas come without engines, but often have a tugboat for added speed, and offer the most tranquil and secluded cruises. Lastly, there are the feluccas, small sailboats, where in some cases you can spend one night on board, but generally, these lovely and traditional sailboats are only used for day trips.

Where Are The Stops?

Between the most popular cruise harbors of Luxor and Aswan lie the most amazing sights, most of which are taken in by all the various cruises, because, after all, that is why everybody is there. The main stops are Qena, a little downriver from Luxor, with the Dendera and Abydos temples; Luxor , with the various valleys of tombs; Edfu with the fabulous Kom Ombo temple; and lastly Aswan, with a visit to Philae. On a five-night cruise upriver (so going south), you will stay overnight in Qena, Luxor, Edfu, and two nights in Aswan.

Length Of Cruise

Most cruises between Luxor and Aswan take between three and seven days, the shorter ones skipping Qena and only staying one night in Aswan, the longer ones adding extra nights, usually in Luxor.

If you are lucky enough to have the time to sail from Cairo to Aswan , the itinerary takes a minimum of 11 nights, but more often than not 14 nights, with sightseeing in Cairo included, usually reaching Luxor on Day 11. Despite the current of the Nile, which is evident but quite slow, the cruises up or down the river take the same amount of time.

When Best To Travel

The best time to visit Upper (southern) Egypt is between October and April. That said, I went at the end of October, and the temperatures were still in the 90s Fahrenheit, making sightseeing a bit of an exhausting undertaking. In the summer, these temperatures are much, much worse, so travel then is best avoided. In December and January, the coldest months, the temperatures hover around the mid-70s Fahrenheit. As for rain, the rainy season is between October and April, with a negligible spike at less than an inch of rain in October.

What You Must Pack

Even if yours is a fancy cruise, pack light, pack layers, and pack sensible shoes. It will be hot and sandy whenever you go exploring. In the Valley of the Kings, for example, there is much sand, no shade, and plenty of stairs and steps to conquer, so light clothing but good shoes that keep you firmly on the ground are useful. Bring a light cover for the evening and something nice for the boat. A clothes brush to get the sand and dust off you at the end of the outing and a handheld fan to bring you some air when it gets warm are essential. And, if you like a tipple or two, know that in Egypt imported wine and champagne are extortionately expensive, so, get your full allowance in the duty-free shop and enjoy along the way.

What To Do Before (Or After)

Chances are that you will fly into Cairo, and unless you are embarking in Cairo, some sightseeing is a must. Allow at least two extra days to see the main sights before heading south. And once you are in the south, note that all cruise ships stop at Aswan because of the dams. If you want to see Abu Simbel, you can either fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel or take a tour either by bus or private car , but you will need to book the car in advance. This is because the tourist road caravan sets off first thing in the morning and is escorted by police all the way between Aswan and Abu Simbel because of potential bandits, and all travelers need to be registered and accounted for by the day before at the latest.

What To Read And Watch About The Nile

To get you in the mood and keep you going while you’re there, here are some books and films set in exactly the places you will be visiting, so you can go, “Oh, I know that place!” as you read or watch.

  • Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
  • The films Death on the Nile from 1978 with Peter Ustinov , 2004 with David Suchet , and 2022 with Kenneth Branagh
  • Some very light but fun mysteries by Elizabeth Peters , with lots of places to be recognized
  • The superb old travel book by Amelia B. Edwards A Thousand Miles up the Nile , first published in 1877

One fantastic historical TV series presented by Bettany Hughes is entitled The Nile and is full of information, making for perfect viewing before and after your trip.

Pro Tip: In many places, you will either have to pay for a photography permit, or, at times, won’t be able to take photographs. But don’t let that stop you from carrying your camera everywhere with you!

8 Days Cairo and Nile Cruise Tour (Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel) + Private Tour to old Cairo (Churches, Mosques and Bazaar)

First and foremost, I would like to extend a huge thank you to Egypt Tour Portal for their exceptional service. On behalf of my family of four, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved, including the tour organizers, airport assistants, tour guides, drivers, and cruise staff. Each of you played a crucial role in creating unforgettable memories during our trip. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication. Regarding the Online Booking Process: Upon requesting information about the tours, the organizer (Amera) was incredibly responsive and efficiently arranged our tour plan in a very short time. They were highly supportive, answering all my questions instantly and addressing my concerns with relevant documents, which assured me of the quality of their service. Thank you, Amera and all teammates, for your great assistance! Arrival at Cairo Airport: Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed inside the airport by Mr. Antar, who promptly collected our passports to expedite the entrance visa process. Thanks to his excellent guidance and communication with the airport staff, this process took approximately 5 minutes. Additionally, Mr. Antar assisted us through the border police and ensured that we were directed to the correct transfer. His professionalism and assistance were truly exceptional. Thank you, Mr. Antar, for your incredible support! Cairo Tours: During our two-day stay in Cairo, we had the pleasure of being guided by Mayvel, who was not only lovely, energetic, and friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable. Upon our arrival in Cairo, she provided an insightful briefing about our upcoming tour itinerary. Mayvel has a remarkable ability to explain the history of monuments and sights in a captivating manner, ensuring that no detail is overlooked. She also shared valuable local tips to enhance our experience. Additionally, Mayvel is an excellent photographer and knew all the best locations for capturing great pictures! Our days in Cairo were truly amazing, thanks to Mayvel's warm companionship and expert guidance. Thank you, Mayvel! Nile Cruise Tour (Luxor-Aswan-Abu Simbel): During our visits to Luxor, Kom Ombo, Aswan, and Abu Simbel, we had the pleasure of being guided by Omar Haledi, an incredible Egyptologist and a PhD student. Omar accompanied us for a significant part of our trip, and his expertise added immense value to our experience. Not only is he a fantastic tour guide, but he is also an amazing academician who taught us how to recognize hieroglyphs and understand their meanings as depicted on the walls. Our family learned a great deal from Omar, thanks to his clear explanations and his ability to make history even more engaging than it already is. He was extremely supportive and friendly towards all members of our family, especially taking extra care with elderly members who were at risk of becoming physically exhausted due to the heat and challenging walking paths. Omar, thank you for making us feel at home in Egypt as we discovered a completely new world. Your guidance and care made our journey truly memorable! Drivers: The drivers were consistently punctual, ensuring that we never had to wait a second longer than necessary after finishing our sightseeing. They were all friendly, respectful, and helpful, which made our visits to the sightseeing places comfortable and worry-free. We are grateful for their excellent service. Thank you all! Acamar Cruise Staff: The entire team, from the waiters to the housekeeping staff to the managers, provided excellent service throughout our cruise. They were friendly, attentive, and ensured that all our needs were met. The food on the cruise was delicious, giving us the opportunity to taste authentic Egyptian cuisine. I would highly recommend sailing with them to all my friends. Thank you, Acamar team, for an unforgettable experience! Overall, our trip organized by Egypt Tour Portal was truly amazing, and we didn't have to worry about anything. Booking a trip without face-to-face communication can sometimes be concerning, but with Egypt Tour Portal, it turned out to be the best experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend their tours to anyone interested in visiting Egypt! All the best, Esra & Kemal & Remi & Ati

We took the day tour from Hurghada to the Giza pyramids, museum, etc… right from start till end, well organised and had the best tour guide Hany Mubarak with us for the entire day. He is amazing with best local knowledge. Felt very safe having him with us and the best lunch at local Egyptian touch. Overall must take trip whilst in Egypt.

It was very informative and interesting to know and see the pyramids , Heny our guide was very cooperative and helped make our experience perfect . The entire trip was very hassle free

My tour guide Emy was very knowledgeable about the histories of the historical sites in Alexandria. She also made sure we had everything needed after each tour. I was with a group for the day. Emy and the driver were very friendly and hospitable. The people in my group and me had a good time touring Alexandria.

Had an unexpected layover in Cairo and was booked for a same day tour with pickup from the airport- Ms Shorouk Karam was very helpful in coordinating this with a quick turn around. Mr. Ahmed El-Saway was also an excellent guide, and we managed to see the the Giza Plateau, the Sphinx, a Papyrus Gallery, a Cartoush shop, and a sunset meal despite a short time frame. I unfortunately did not catch his name, but had a great bus driver as well. All services were very accommodating for myself as an English speaker.
