Where are you going?

Enter the destination(s) you plan to visit or select them from the list of countries and regions in the dropdown.

Planning a stopover? If you’re in a country for less than 72 hours, you do not need to list it as a destination.

Don’t currently know all the countries you’ll be visiting? You can select a region to obtain cover for all countries within that region, or you can select “Anywhere in the world”. Important: If selecting “Anywhere in the world”, your policy will not provide cover for claims arising in countries that are subject to sanctions. Your safety is paramount, so please read and familiarise yourself with the “ Standing Travel Alert for High Risk and Sanctioned Countries ” when undertaking worldwide travel – and before making any side trips to neighbouring countries – to ensure you have adequate cover.

Going on a cruise? If your cruise is in inland Australia (e.g. on the Murray River) or in Australian coastal water (e.g. the Kimberley), enter or select “Australia”. If your cruise embarks and disembarks from Australia ports only without any stopover at a port outside of Australia (e.g. a “Sampler Cruise” or cruise from Sydney to Brisbane), enter or select “Domestic Cruise”. If your cruise is overseas (e.g. a European river cruise, a Caribbean cruise, or a cruise from Sydney to Hong Kong), enter or select the country or region you will spend the most time in during your trip.

Want to come to Australia on our Inbound Plan? Select “Australia Inbound”.

When do you depart?

Enter the date you will leave your home to start your trip.

When do you return?

Enter the date you will arrive home based on AEST (considering any time differences/zones and travel times).

Duration of each trip?

Select the maximum trip duration that best suits your needs.

The maximum trip duration you select will apply to each separate trip you take during the 12-month period of your policy.

For cover to apply, you cannot take trips that exceed this maximum duration. If you make a claim related to a trip that exceeds this maximum duration, it may be declined.

The maximum trip duration you select will be shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Age of each traveller?

Enter the age (as of today) of each adult and child to be included on the policy.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Travel Insurance For Visitors To Australia

Are you visiting Australia from overseas? Or do you live in Australia and need to arrange travel insurance for friends or family visiting you?

If that's you, you might be finding it tricky to find cover. To buy a standard comprehensive travel insurance policy , most insurers in Australia require you to be a resident to qualify for cover, but there are options out there for you!

What Are Visitors Options?

Visitors to Australia can either choose to buy a policy from within their own country or opt for Overseas Visitors Cover, which unfortunately only a handful of companies in Australia offer.

What Is Overseas Visitors Cover?

Overseas Visitors or Inbound policies generally are for those travellers coming to Australia on holiday (or business) who do not have travel cover from their home country. While it is typical to purchase travel insurance from your home country before you depart, more and more travellers to Australia are taking out policies with Australian brands for their perceived reliability. With one in four Australians born overseas, and 46% of Aussies have at least one parent born overseas, increasingly these policies are bought by locals for friends and family visiting Australia.

What Are The Conditions of Inbound Travel Insurance?

  • A visitors policy will typically cover your flight to Australia, the time while you are here, but cover will stop when you reach immigration at the airport when you are returning home
  • Age restrictions may apply
  • All or the majority of your trip must be within Australia to qualify for cover
  • A waiting period may apply to medical claims
  • Must purchase within a specified time frame of landing in Australia
  • If you have Medicare, you may not be eligible for cover from some providers

Where Can You Buy Overseas Visitors Cover?

General Advice Warning: The contents of this article were accurate at the time of writing. Insurers change their policies from time to time, so some information may have changed. You should always read the Product Disclosure Statement of your chosen insurer to understand what is covered and what isn't. The information provided is of a general nature only and does not take into account any personal objectives, financial situation or needs. Before making a decision you should consider the appropriateness of the information having regard to your personal circumstances.

What’s Typically Included?

  • Medical cover within Australia:  Medical expenses for injury or illness including hospital stays, surgery, dental, prescription drugs, doctor and dentist office visits. You will not be covered for medical treatment outside of Australia
  • Luggage and personal items:  Loss, theft or damage to luggage and personal items
  • Personal liability:  Cover in the event that you are found to be legally liable for accidental injury or damage you may have caused to another person or their property
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits:  The cost of rearranging or cancelling your trip because of unforeseen circumstances such as illness, accidents and extreme weather conditions
  • Rental vehicle excess:  Cover for the excess payment on your rental vehicle’s insurance if the car you are driving is involved in an accident or is stolen
  • Hospital cash allowance:  A daily allowance if you are hospitalised overseas (allowance will start after a specified period of time spent in hospital)

Like any policy there are exclusions around pre-existing medical conditions and cancellation cover, so make sure you understand your cover by reading the Product Disclosure Statement before you buy.

Just After Medical Only Cover?

If you're finding it difficult to get travel insurance, but are mainly concerned about medical benefits, perhaps you'd consider overseas visitors health insurance cover instead? A few Australian health insurers (not travel insurers) offer cover to non-Australians, but remember these policies will not include any travel insurance benefits like cancellation, luggage, or personal liability benefits  at all.  Australian Unity, Bupa, HBF, HCF and  Medibank  all offer visitors health cover.

Do You Qualify For Medicare?

Some countries have reciprocal healthcare agreements with Australia such as; New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Belgium, Malta, Slovenia and Norway.

Lucky for you, if you're from one of these countries and you've got your Medicare card, you're covered for medical treatment you receive while you're here already.

Are You A Non-Resident Living In Australia For A Few Years?

If you're in Australia on a working holiday visa (417), a sponsorship visa (457), a defacto visa, or even a student visa you should look into  non-permanent resident travel insurance  rather than a visitors policy. Follow the link for more info.

Whether you're here for a quick visit, or an extended break, overseas visitors travel insurance cover is a vital part of every trip. Get cover today to ensure a smooth-sailing, stress free holiday!

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed to cover you for a range of unexpected events that could happen when you’re travelling overseas or in Australia. Allianz Travel Insurance can cover costs like travel delays or emergency medical treatment, or the cost of replacing items that were lost or stolen during your trip. 1

We have Basic, Comprehensive, Domestic, and Multi-Trip Plans to choose from, with varying levels of cover to help you when you need it most. Our plans are available for singles, duos or families. Read through our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for detailed information about our plans to see which level of cover is right for you.

Additional cover options.

For an additional premium, you can choose to add an Adventure Pack, Cruise Pack, or Snow Pack to eligible plans. Increased Item Limits Cover can also be added to insure your luggage, personal effects or valuables should something happen to them while travelling.

You have the option to vary the base excess when you buy your policy (premium adjustment will apply depending on the excess selected). The choice is yours.

Website review and travel remediation

Choose what suits your needs, single cover, family plan, ready to get started, frequently asked questions.

Without travel insurance, you run the risk of incurring some significant expenses that may take years to pay off.

If you’re travelling overseas, travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation. Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip, and many other unfortunate scenarios.

We don’t cover medical expenses under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy. However, you may wish to take out insurance for domestic flight changes or cancellations, lost or stolen baggage, or rental vehicle excess. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.

Travel insurance may cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip, such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured while travelling overseas, including arranging your evacuation if needed.

Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include costs due to unexpected delays and cancellations, rental vehicle excess, and personal liability. You also have the option to purchase additional cover for activities such as adventure sports or skiing, although this isn’t available on all plans.

Cover limits vary from insurance provider to insurance provider, as do policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so it’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement to make sure you fully understand what’s covered, the limits applying to the policy, and to make sure the policy is appropriate for your needs.

The length of your Travel Insurance policy is largely dependent on the travel dates you supply. When obtaining a quote, or buying a policy, you’ll be prompted to enter in your departure and return dates – this will be the period of cover for all benefits except the cancellation benefit, which begins from the date your policy is issued.

The period of cover is also shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which is sent to you at the time of purchase. You may want to extend the length of your holiday abroad (and therefore need an extension of your period of cover) and you may be able to do this within specified timeframes.

If you think you may travel more than once a year, you may wish to consider a Multi-Trip policy . Different start and end dates apply, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for full details.

It’s up to you when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:

  • You can buy our Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  • You must buy Allianz Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to begin travel.
  • Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider buying our Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.

Yes, if you change your mind after you buy your Travel Insurance policy, you may cancel it within 14 days of your Certificate of Insurance being issued.

You’ll be given a full refund of the premium you’ve paid, provided you’ve not started your journey and don’t intend to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.

When considering which policy is right for you, make sure you consider your needs, as well as your financial situation. Reading the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination (TMD) is a good place to start as they will give you more detail, so you can decide if the plan is right for you.

Allianz Travel Insurance offers a number of travel insurance plans – Basic , Comprehensive , Domestic , Non-Medical or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance . You can see more detailed information on our Compare Cover Options page .

Compare Travel Insurance Quotes in 30 Seconds

  • 100% free to use. No obligation.

You'll have a lot on your mind when planning an international holiday. Bags, tick. Passport, tick. Airfares, tick. If you've left home without your travel insurance and you're already overseas, though, Savvy can help you find a policy suitable for you.

Australians already overseas can compare policies and providers who cover those already abroad to find the best for them. You'll get to weigh the pros and cons of each to narrow your choices, saving you both time and money. So, if you're already on holiday, compare with Savvy and get protected today.

Can I buy travel insurance if I’m already overseas?

Certain travel insurance providers on the market allow Australian residents to purchase a travel insurance policy if they’ve already made the trek overseas on a holiday. Usually, these providers require you to have a return ticket booked and be a permanent Australian resident, citizen or relevant temporary visa holder.

Buying travel insurance in this way will come with a waiting period, meaning your cover won’t kick in as soon as you purchase it. These waiting periods range from 48 to 96 hours from the moment you buy a policy but vary from one insurer to the next.

In most cases, you’ll be required to purchase your travel insurance within 30 days of leaving Australia if you’re already overseas. You are also likely going to be limited to 90 days of travel.

Policies tailored to those already overseas often come with age limits, much like standard travel insurance packages. It’s worth comparing travel insurance policies to help you find age restrictions which are suitable for you, as most policies start restricting coverage to those over 70 years old (though many travel insurers can offer cover to those up to 100 or older).

What does my travel insurance cover if I’m already overseas?

Usually, travel insurance purchased as an Australian resident whilst already overseas offers the same benefits as if you bought it before you departed on your holiday. However, double-check with your insurer’s Product Disclosure Statement so you can find a policy which offers you the right protection when you’re travelling.

Depending on the level of cover you purchase and who you purchase with, you should be covered for the following:

  • Medical and hospital expenses: if you’re asking yourself why you need travel insurance , coverage for any medical treatment is a good reason to purchase it when you’re already overseas. Most providers offer you unlimited coverage for maladies such as injuries or illness. Most comprehensive travel insurance policies will also cover you for any emergency dental procedures while you’re out of the country.
  • Lost or damaged luggage: having your personal items , such as your luggage, go missing or sustain damage can be frustrating. Your travel insurer can reimburse or replace your baggage and worldly belongings if they are lost, damaged or stolen under a covered event.
  • Cancellation: even the most well-organised holiday can be thrown off course, so when you need to cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury or the death of a loved one, your travel insurance provider can cover the costs.
  • Travel delays: whether your flight is delayed due to bad weather or your cruise ship misses a port, delays can be a real bummer when you just want to get to where you are going. Your insurance company will pay for a night’s accommodation, food, any transport and the bare necessities (toiletries and clothes) if your means of travel is delayed by more than 24 hours.
  • Personal liability: being embroiled in a messy and complicated lawsuit overseas can seem like a nightmare. If you have travel insurance whilst you’re overseas, you can be covered for up to $5 million if an accident happens and you’re found liable. For example, if you’ve travelled to Italy and crashed your Vespa into another scooter, it’ll pay to be protected as personal liability expenses can be costly.
  • Theft of money: if you’re targeted by pickpockets and lose some cash, most insurers allow you to claim up to $250 so you can get at least some of your hard-earned money back. Remember, insurers will want to see proof of the theft such as a report from the police or relevant authority.
  • Car rental excess: renting a car can be a great way to get around when you’re already overseas, whether you’re driving through the mountains on holiday in Phuket or taking a road trip across America. However, the cost of covering your vehicle’s excess can be steep if something goes wrong. Luckily, your travel insurance provider will cover the cost if car rental excess cover is included in your policy.
  • Accidental death: if you die whilst you’re already overseas and you have travel insurance, your provider will cover any costs associated with bringing your body home and arranging a funeral.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about travel insurance already overseas

There’s no universal rule on how late you can purchase your travel insurance. However, most people will tell you it’s wise to purchase your policy before you’re wheels up and heading out of Australia. Buying as soon as you know your travel dates could allow you to be covered for more pre-paid bookings if you do need to cancel for whatever reason down the track. If you accidentally depart without it, though, buying as soon as you realise will help you access the cover you need sooner (given the waiting period).

Yes – certain providers will let you extend your travel insurance policy when you’re already overseas. Some will allow you to add 12 months onto your policy, but others may require you to purchase a new one. However, if you’re planning on being away from home for longer, it may be worth taking out a long-term travel insurance policy.

Certain travel insurance companies will allow you to purchase a one-way policy if you’re already overseas and want to come home. For example, if you’ve been living overseas for years and need cover to come home, you can purchase a one-way policy. However, most travel insurance companies won’t allow you to purchase travel insurance if you’re already overseas and don’t have a return flight booked.

Comparing travel insurance with Savvy is one of the best ways to find a deal that’s tailormade to your travel needs. If you’re doing a bit of window shopping online for a policy, you may want to take the following factors into account:

  • The price of your premium
  • The type of coverage you want (such as annual, single-trip or one-way)
  • The level of cover you need (basic or comprehensive)
  • Inclusions and exclusions
  • Benefit limits
  • Cover for pre-existing conditions
  • Cooling-off periods
  • COVID-19 cover

If you’re a non-resident looking for travel insurance , your options could be quite limited. Most insurers in Australia will only offer already overseas coverage to permanent residents or those who are citizens. Therefore, if you live in Australia but aren’t a permanent resident, you probably won’t be able to get cover.

Travel insurance for 457 visa holders

Coming to live in australia on a 457 visa find out what you need to know about 457 visa travel insurance..

In this guide

Who offers cover for non residents?

About 457 travel insurance, important conditions for 457 travel insurance, about the 457 visa, what happens to my super when i leave australia, do i need health insurance if travelling to australia on the 457 visa, compare policies for 457 visa holders.

Destinations

Travel insurance is a necessity when you travel, regardless of the reason for your trip or how long you’re travelling.

That’s why, even if you’re coming to Australia on a visa, you should have travel cover, not just while moving here, but for any trips you plan to take while you’re here.

This guide looks at 457 travel insurance in general and work-sponsored 457 insurance in particular and outlines the cover you’ll need to travel, live and work in Australia.

Note: This information was last updated August 2022

Australian insurers offer non-resident travel insurance to the holders of a number of different visas including:

  • 457 – Temporary business long stay
  • 405 or 410 – Retirement or investor retirement
  • 411 – Exchange
  • 416 – Special program
  • 417 – Working holiday
  • 422 – Medical practitioner

Why do I need 457 travel insurance?

Travel is rife with unforeseen risks and 457 travel insurance will cover you against a range circumstances. While the level of cover will depend on your insurer and the policy you choose, 457 travel insurance usually covers:

  • Emergency medical assistance. Emergency medical or dental expenses, including ambulance, hospital and emergency evacuation.
  • Personal disability. A benefit paid for a disabling injury suffered while travelling.
  • Cancellations and lost deposits. Reimbursement for cancellation fees or deposits that cannot be recovered.
  • Travel delays. Additional accommodation and meals expenses if your travel arrangements are delayed.
  • Luggage delays. A benefit to buy emergency clothing and toiletries if your luggage is misplaced or lost by a travel provider.
  • Luggage and personal belongings. Compensation for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage or personal items.
  • Rental vehicle excess. Covers the excess payable if your rental car is stolen or damaged.
  • Personal liability. Covers your liability for third party injury or property damage.
  • Travel documents. Covers the cost of replacing lost or stolen travel documents.

To qualify for 457 travel insurance, you will need to satisfy eligibility requirements. These include:

  • While you are free to travel overseas while you are here, you must be planning to spend the majority of your trip within Australia
  • You must have an adequate level of health insurance for the entire period of your stay, either private health insurance or Medicare-equivalent cover under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA)
  • You must not be above a specified age (age limit differs with insurers)

The 457 visa allows skilled workers to travel to Australia to work for an approved sponsor in a nominated occupation for up to four years. To be eligible for this visa, the following criteria must be met:

  • You must have sponsorship by an approved business
  • You must have the necessary skills to fill the position nominated by your sponsor
  • A business can only sponsor you if they are unable to find an Australian citizen or permanent resident to fill the position
  • The position must be an approved occupation on the Skilled Occupation Lists
  • You must be able to meet all registration and licensing requirements to work in your nominated occupation
  • You must be able to speak vocational English (in most cases)
  • You may be required to do a skills assessment
  • You and any dependent family members may be required to undergo a health exam, depending on your length of stay, country of citizenship, time spent in other countries and intended activities in Australia
  • You and your family members must have adequate private health insurance, unless you are covered by the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement
  • You must be able to provide a police certificate to meet character requirements
  • You must have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government
  • Your sponsor must also include your family members as secondary sponsored persons

If you have been living and working in Australia on a 457 visa, in accordance with Australian law, your employer will have been making compulsory superannuation contributions on your behalf. When your 457 visa expires or is cancelled and you return to your country of origin, you will still be able to claim the money in your Australian superannuation account.

You can do this by applying for what is known as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) from the Australian Taxation Office. If you didn’t claim your super from your fund at least six months before departing Australia, the money would have been sent to the ATO as unclaimed super and upon request, it will be paid to you, minus any taxes owing. The taxed element of the taxable component of a DASP is taxed at rate of 35%, while the untaxed element is taxed at 45%.

You can apply for your DASP online on the ATO website. After verifying your identity and eligibility, the system will search for your unclaimed super, which will be held either with a super fund or with the ATO. Once found and approved, you will usually receive a cheque in the mail within 28 days of your application.

All non-residents visiting Australia on a visa must have adequate health cover, either through a private health insurer or under the RHCA. This is an agreement Australia has with a number of countries including New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Belgium, Malta, Slovenia and Norway. It gives people from these countries access to our public health care services under Medicare including:

  • Free treatment as a public patient in a public hospital
  • Medicare benefits for visits to a GP
  • Access to subsidised medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)

As Medicare only covers treatments medically necessary, many 457 visa holders opt to fill in the gaps by taking out private health insurance as well. Typical 457 health insurance will give you extra benefits such as:

  • The option to choose your own hospital and doctor
  • A private room (either in a public or private hospital)
  • Minimum waiting periods
  • Ambulance cover
  • Gap cover (covers the amount between what is charged and what you get back)
  • Medical repatriation to your country of origin if required
  • Ancillary benefits including optical, dental and physiotherapy

If you are planning to live and work in Australia on a 457 visa, 457 travel insurance is a must and, because it is a requirement by insurers, adequate health insurance as well. Luckily, there are plenty of 457 travel insurance options out there. Shop around and find the cover you need at a price you can afford.

Where are you from?

non resident travel insurance australia

Travel insurance is is taken out in the country of origin. If you needed to be repatriated to your own country, only an insurance company of that country has that responsibility.

You will need to go online and get insurance from your own residency.

You need to buy cover in the country in which you reside. One of the things most travel issuance covers is repatriation, which is obviously to your home. You're not looking in the right place....

Maybe try something like World Nomads. They sell travel insurance in just about every country for every country.

(What the others have said is true - that you must get travel insurance in your country of residence, but World Nomads is actually more of a broker, that will back-to-back your insurance with a company in your country of residence. But you might never know that, if you just bought from their website)

Works Nomads is a good suggestion. The cruise company may also have a policy

Google insurance for cruises or get you parents to do that in their home country.
