Town in Phu Quoc Vietnam

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

Sometimes still described as Vietnam’s “best-kept secret”, Phú Quôc is an island in the Gulf of Thailand that sits not far from the coast of Cambodia. The city of Phú Quôc is the main urban area and center of tourism for the island. Out of Vietnam’s 40 islands that are scattered throughout the country, Phú Quôc is perhaps the most famous.

While the island was once relatively unheard-of, once tourists discovered the Phú Quôc’s stunningly beautiful landscape, the crowds began to grow. Now, the island is one of Vietnam’s top-rated destinations where tourists convene to escape into paradise.

Island and City in the Kiên Giang Province

While the name Phú Quôc refers to both the island and city, the majority of visitors prefer to travel around the island’s urban sections first. Some travelers don’t even venture to the remote areas of Phú Quôc because they prefer to relax at the resorts. Luckily, Phú Quôc has a little bit of both as it is a mix of both ultra-touristy areas and remote escapes.

Town in Phu Quoc Vietnam

The urban areas of the island are a part of Phú Quôc City. Local officials have created nine subdivisions in Phú Quôc City, which include two large urban districts and seven rural districts. Duong Dông and An Thói are the main areas for tourism. As a whole, the island is located 22 nautical miles (40 kilometers) from Vietnam’s coastal city, Hà Tiên in Kien Giang Province .

Traveling to Phú Quôc City is a little more complicated because of its island location. However, one benefit is that Phú Quôc City does have its own airport, Phu Quoc International , which is interconnected to other airports around the country including Noi Bai International in Hanoi and the Tan Son Nhat International in Ho Chi Minh City.

Tourists who aren’t flying directly to Phú Quôc City may decide to travel by land instead. From Saigon, tourists can travel to the coastal cities of Ha Tien (6 and ½ hour drive from HCMC) or Rach Giá (4 and a ½ hour drive from HCMC). Both Hà Tiên and Rach Giá are connected to Phú Quôc Island and City by hydrofoil, taking 1 and ½ hours from Ha Tien and 2 and ½ hours from Rach Giá.

Phu Quoc

Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Phú Quôc City only take about an hour, which makes flying the fastest and most convenient way to travel to the island. From the airport or port, travelers can then hail a cab to take them to their accommodation on the island.

Early records of the island’s existence are acknowledged by Cambodian references from the year 1615. In sealed royal documents, the discussion of Phú Quôc Island and the Cambodian governor’s power is debated as the island was officially a part of the Khmer Empire.

Image of a fishing village in Phu Quoc in 1968 in Vietnam

In 1689, a Cambodian king gave a Chinese explorer the authority to explore, settle, and develop large portions of the Cambodian coast, which led to the development of cities like Hà Tiên. When the Chinese explorer changed allegiances to the Nguyen lords of Vietnam, the land became a point of dispute between the two countries.

In 1739, Cambodia tried to invade Hà Tiên, but the forces were ultimately defeated, and Vietnam claimed the land and Phú Quôc Island. The debate about the island’s ownership began again centuries later in 1975 when the Khmer Rouge tried to claim the island and take it from Vietnam.

Only one year later, Cambodia would give up all claims to Phú Quôc. However, the damage had already been done and the Cambodian-Vietnamese War started just four years later in 1979. Before 1975, French colonists also tried to claim the island by occupying the land. Using the island to detain political dissidents, the French used Phú Quôc as a base for their prisoner of war camps.

The Phú Quôc Prison was Vietnam’s largest camp , and it was built by the French in 1949. After French colonization ended, American forces took over the camp and used it during the Vietnam War. Today, there are many historical sites that have been turned into tourist attractions.

Many of the camps, including the infamous Phú Quôc Prison, have been opened to the public, and tours run daily. In addition to the old prisons, the architecture around the city reflects both the island’s occupation by French and American foreign forces.

  • The total area of the island is 222 square miles (574 square kilometers)
  • There is a permanent population of approximately 179,480 people living on Phú Quôc
  • Phú Quôc City was the first island city to be established in Vietnam

Main Attractions

Planning a trip to Phú Quôc can be overwhelming because of how many activities there are for tourists. At a minimum, travelers are encouraged to spend at least 3 days exploring the island. Though, day trips from Hà Tiên or Rach Giá can be arranged if you’re short on time.

Tourists who have the time to explore will be able to enjoy everything that this charismatic island has to offer including exploring the local beaches, touring the city, learning the history, and hiking in the national park.

Hit the Beaches

Remote Beach in Phu Quoc Vietnam

Most of the beaches in Phú Quôc are located on the north and west coast. However, there are dozens of sandy spots that are scattered along the island’s coastline. Beaches that are closer to towns will be more crowded, while those that are located outside of urban areas will mostly be empty.

The longest beach in Phú Quôc is called Bai Truong and it is located 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) outside of Duong Dông. Bai Truong is a well-developed beach with resorts, restaurants, and bars set up on the sand. Crowds at Bai Truong can be rather sizeable, but because of its sheer size, travelers should be able to find their own quiet spot on the sand.

Lined with coconut trees and quiet resorts, Ganh Dau Beach is one of Phú Quôc’s more remote areas of sand. Divided into two parts, the second part of the beach is spectacular with clear water and fine sand. Sections of the beach are a part of the Peppercorn Beach Resort, but a few spots are open to the public too.

For travelers that want to break away from the crowds, Cua Can Beach is the place to go. Somewhat difficult to access, not many people venture to this beach. The vast empty sand is a great place where you can relax in private. One downside to the beach is that there aren’t many trees, so shade is hard to find.

One of the best beaches for swimming is Ong Lang. Located just 15 minutes outside of Duong Dông, the beach has gentle waves, which are perfect for youngsters. Another plus is that not many people visit this beach, so there aren’t many crowds. Although, people should remember to pack the sunscreen because shady spots are hard to come by.

Tour the Prison

Phu Quoc Prison in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

For the history buffs, a trip to the Phú Quôc Prison is one way to learn more about the country’s violent past. Once a place where thousands of people were held as prisoners of war, the prison has been converted into a museum. Phú Quôc is the main prison, but there are smaller camps on the island too.

Tours are given daily and displayed inside are various exhibits depicting the wartime atrocities.

Visit the Markets

There are numerous markets in Phú Quôc, but the most famous is the Dinh Cau Night Market. A must-see for travelers, the market features a plethora of shopping and dining experiences. While some stalls are open during the day, the crowds begin to form once the sun has set.

Another night market called Bach Dang is less crowded than Dinh Cau. Both markets are within walking distance to many hotels and are highly recommended by fellow travelers.

Ride the Cable Car

Phú Quôc is also home to the world’s longest non-stop three-way cable car at Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park Ken Giang , which goes between Phú Quôc and Hon Thom (Pineapple Island). Traveling over water, riders will have an exceptional bird’s eye view of the islands and sea. Large windows provide a 360-degree view to ensure that everyone gets a chance to see the sights.

Cable Car in Phu Quoc Vietnam

Measuring in at nearly 5 miles (8 kilometers) long, the ride between the islands gives you sufficient time to observe the landscape.

Hike the National Park

Covering the northern part of Phú Quôc Island is the Phú Quôc National Park . A mix of untouched nature and luxury resorts, the park is one of the most visited conservation areas in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Region . However, with the popularity come the crowds.

Solo travelers, families, and couples all converge in Phú Quôc National Park to stay at the resorts and explore its wild side. Joining a tour group can make it easier to navigate throughout the park as local guides will be able to show you the area’s best spots.

Take a Safari

Owned by Vietnam’s billionaire Vingroup, the Vinpearl Safari Phú Quôc is a conservation park and zoo that houses some of the country’s rare and exotic species. Boasting 380 acres, the zoo is also the largest in the country. Designed to be like a safari experience, the park is highly rated amongst families who have enjoyed spending the day viewing the animals with their children.

Connect with the Locals

Fishermen in Phu Quoc Vietnam

One experience that tourists love is visiting the Ham Ninh Fishing Village. Mostly local, the village gives visitors a chance to observe the daily life of Vietnam’s fishermen. Visitors can arrange for a homestay, which would allow them to learn traditional fishing techniques and spend time cooking with a local family.

Visitors who are feeling hungry won’t have to travel too far as there are a few restaurants located just steps away on the resort grounds.

Special Events

On top of an already never-ending list of activities, tourism becomes more frenzied in Phú Quôc during festivals. An excellent way to get immersed in the culture, tourists may choose to visit the island during a time of celebration. Popular festivals in Phú Quôc City include the Nguyen Trung Truc, Ba Ong Lang, and Boat Racing Festival.

Nguyen Trung Truc Festival – First held in 1996, the Nguyen Trung Truc Festival has become an annual celebration in Phú Quôc to celebrate the local people and Vietnamese traditional values. Held in late August, the festival is centered around the Ganh Dau commune, which is 25 miles (40 km) outside of the city. Part of the celebrations includes a ceremony, performances, and games.

Boat Racing Festival – Occurring on Reunification Day, which is the 30 th of April every year, the Boat Racing Festival takes place at Dinh Cau Beach and features men and women from the local communes who race in longboats. Word has spread about the festival and many tourists choose to travel to Phú Quôc City just to watch the race, so expect to be in a large crowd.

Ba Ong Lang Festival – The Ba Ong Lang Festival is held on the 18 th and 19 th of Vietnam’s first lunar month. The celebration is held at the Ba Ong Lang Temple, which is in the Ong Lang Hamlet – about 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) away from Duong Dông ward. Locals use the festival as a time to pray for a good harvest and happiness in the coming year.

Phú Quôc City and the island is rather large in size, so tourists won’t always be able to walk to their next destination. However, there are a few different transportation options for travelers to safely and efficiently get around Phú Quôc. This includes walking or taking a taxi, bus, boat, bicycle, or motorbike.

Image of Bai Sao Beach in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

After arriving at Phu Quoc International Airport , most will opt for a taxi or hotel shuttle to get to where they are going. Once at their hotel, walking, taxis, bicycles, and buses are the easiest way for tourists to get around Phú Quôc’s urban areas.

This includes the northern ward of Duong Dông and the southern ward, An Thói. Travelers who want to go between wards or to different points on the island will need to arrange to take a taxi, boat, or motorbike .

Taxis and boats are easy and affordable. Various companies with affordable rates operate throughout Phú Quôc to transport tourists to their desired location. However, some tourists choose to drive themselves by renting a motorbike, which is also cheap and easy to do.

Travelers should keep in mind that foreign driver’s licenses are not accepted in Vietnam, so all motorbikes must be less than 50cc in order to be legally driven by a tourist.

Phú Quôc City’s location in Southern Vietnam means that the area has two seasons – wet and dry. The wettest months of the year are June, July, August, and September. This is when monsoon season is in full swing and most days are cloudy with high temperatures. Travelers tend to avoid the rainy season , which makes the summer months the low tourist season for Phú Quôc City.

The highest volume of tourism occurs from November to January, which is when the end of the monsoon season. The end and beginning of the year months are also popular because of numerous holidays like Christmas and New Year’s. Weather during the dry season isn’t too hot and most days are free from clouds or rain, making it perfect for participating in outdoor activities.

Palm Lined Beach in Phu Quoc Vietnam

Phú Quôc is one of Vietnam’s outstanding destinations, but what makes it special is that even amongst the crowds, you can still find untouched landscapes and unspoiled beaches. While there are some mega-resorts, and there is a tourist boom, Phú Quôc is still growing and it is on the cusp of becoming the next Bali.

Travelers who want to go should plan a trip in the near future and see the island before it becomes tainted by mass tourism.

Phu Quoc Island has become a famous tourist destination in Vietnam for relaxing on beautiful beaches and exploring typical sea culture.

Here are the top attractions in this island city of Phu Quoc to check them out.

1. Hon Thom (Pineapple Islet)

hon thom phu quoc island

Hon Thom is located 7km in the South of Phu Quoc island, around 37 km far away from Duong Dong Town.

The top natural highlights of this islet include the stretching white sand beaches, coral reefs, slanting coconut trees facing the ocean, and clean seawater that you can see the fish swimming around.

Besides, Vinpearl Grand World Phu Quoc, one of the big amusement parks in Vietnam, can give you exciting experiences with plenty of games, such as water park activities and the first wooden roller coasters in Vietnam.

However, in my opinion, the top attracts me from the long cable car from An Thoi to Hon Thom, where I can enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean mixed with the green trees of these islands. Additionally, Hon Thom gives me peaceful roads running curved on the islet and clean beaches instead of the modern amusement here.

2. Bai Sao (Starfish Beach)

sao beach on phu quoc island

Also located in South Phu Quoc, Bai Sao belongs to Bai Sao Hamlet, An Thoi Ward, Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam. Bai Sao has become a typical place to explore starfish and enjoy 7km of white sand with coconut plants looking romantic during the sunset.

This region is a public beach, so you can swim and interact with local people who sell souvenirs and toddy-palm drinks. Take a seat and sip a cold drink to look at the blue ocean! What a wonderful time!

Typically, you may see a few Phu Quoc ridgeback dogs running around and sometimes swimming with their owners in the sea.

3. Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc

safari phu quoc

With an area of 380 hectares, Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc has become one of the biggest semi-wildcare and conservation parks in the world.

This attraction is in Ganh Dau Commune, Phu Quoc District, Kien Giang Province. And, it is around 23 km from the busiest Duong Dong city on this island. Using a taxi or a specific bus is convenient to travel to this place.

Visit this well-known park is one of the fun  things to do in Phu Quoc  because you can enjoy a unique animal circus and explore Vietnamese animals and others from many other countries.

This tourist destination of Phu Quoc can give you a good chance to learn more about animal life in wild nature while you are on a bus. A few animals, such as tigers or rhinos, are curious to come right in front of your tourist buses. So, the Vinpearl Sarafi is suitable for family travel on this island.

4. Ham Ninh Fishing Village

ham ninh fishing village phu quoc

As a rustic place,  Ham Ninh fishing village  has the tranquil scenery of a fishing area. You can feel the peace that exudes in the daily life of the locals, mainly spending all day in the ocean and preparing the tools for the next catching fish trip.

The most beautiful time in Ham Ninh fishing village is at sunset or the dawn. The poor life of fishermen becomes busier when they prepare to come to the sea to put fishing nets in the water; or begin to bring the fresh sea fish, crabs, and squids back to their ladies to sell.

During that time, the village can give you a peaceful feeling. The simple life, small homes, and typical stilt houses in the light yellow lights seem to eat all your mind and chaotic thoughts. Let’s visit it to feel it!

5. Dinh Cau Cape

dinh cau phu quoc island

Dinh Cau Cape, a small destination in Phu Quoc, is a walkway with a short distance of nearly 300m right in front of Dinh Cau Temple – which is only 500 meters from the Phu Quoc Night Market.

The most beautiful feature here comes with the sunset when all the regions of the sea, temple, and lighthouse become more romantic in peaceful view.

During the sunset, standing on the Dinh Cau Cape can give you beautiful photos with a dreamy scenery background that covers a large space of ocean spotted a few boats.

dinh cau cape phu quoc

Because of the small spot for visiting, it takes you not long to spend time here. But, the top thing to notice is that you need to come here at the right time of sunset for beautiful photos.

6. Suoi Tranh Waterfall

stream in phu quoc national park

Suoi Tranh Waterfall belongs to the National Park of Phu Quoc and is on the east side of the island.

Suoi Tranh is also a small attraction in Phu Quoc Island, but Vietnamdrive would like to mention it because this place can make your journey get various colors instead of only spending time on the luxury resorts in Phu Quoc.

Luckily, for the last few years, a company has invested in developing the area around Suoi Tranh Waterfall to become a modern tourist place, which supports visitors to explore this stream easily.

Washing in the stream and taking pictures are the main activities for almost all tourists when coming here.

7. Tuan Viet Pepper Garden

pepper village in phu quoc

Phu Quoc can be considered the home of peppers in Vietnam because it has high-quality products with fragrant flavors.

Thus, you can find many pepper gardens on Phu Quoc Island; however, Vietnamdrive’s team chose Tuan Viet Pepper Garden (TL47, Duong To, Phu Quoc, Kien Giang) because it is near Duong Dong Town – only 3 km and around 14km from Phu Quoc Airport.

Visiting the pepper garden can take only 30 – 50 minutes, so you should combine this typical attraction with other places.

When stopping at Tuan Viet Pepper Garden, you can see how peppers are grown, and it is a chance to try green peppers to know their hot taste and chew fresh red peppers to find the sweet taste and hot feeling.

8. Thinh Phat Fish Sauce Factory

fish sauce factory in phu quoc

Thinh Phat Fish Sauce Factory is located at Road 30, Quarter 1, Duong Dong Town, Phu Quoc District, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam.

This private factory produces fish sauce following the traditional methods, which is the core reason that Vietnamdrive chooses it as an attraction on Pearl Island.

The impression comes from the big wooden barrels with dark red colors and fishy fish sauce smells. You can see fish sauce directly run from these barrels and buy tasty fish sauce bottles as typical gifts from Phu Quoc Island.

What do you wait for? Range your time to fly to the  Phu Quoc Airport  directly to start your holidays there and explore plenty of charming tourist sites.

In 2001, the Government decided to upgrade the park to preserve its ecology, and then the Park Management Board has coordinated with local residents and military units to implement forest protection measures, particularly fire prevention.

“The rainy season in Phu Quoc is short but the dry season is longer there. So, we have established a forest fire prevention steering board and firefighter units which are on standby,” said Mr. Binh – director of the park. “Every commune and local military unit has worked out detailed fire prevention plans. Vietnam's biggest island long held onto a seductive image as the country's 'last paradise.' Then came the clubs, a casino, and a safari.

When Ken Atkinson first visited the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc in 2003, he was struck by its beauty.

"It was similar to Phuket or Samui when these Thai islands started from nothing," Atkinson said of the island, which is southwest of Vietnam. The executive chairman of Grant Thornton Vietnam, Atkinson has been based in Ho Chi Minh City for more than two decades.

Hawksbill and green turtles nested on its white-sand beaches. Crystal-clear waters teemed with coral reefs. Much of the 593-square-kilometer island was covered with forest ecosystems. There were no more than 45,000 residents then, and their key occupations included fishing, producing Vietnam's best seafood and fish sauce, cultivating green pepper, and farming pearls. The nature on Phu Quoc (pronounced foo kwok ) was flourishing so richly that UNESCO designated the island a biosphere reserve in 2006.

"To me, it was a diamond in the rough," said Atkinson. "There was a great opportunity to develop Phu Quoc into something spectacular in Vietnam."

Fast forward to 2021, and Vietnam's biggest island has indeed been developed into something new — but it's also become something unrecognizable.

Previously, Phu Quoc was likely to be mentioned in the same breath as Bali or South Korea's Jeju — islands that promoted local culture as they developed their tourism scenes. Now Vietnam's largest island is more likely to be compared to Las Vegas or China's Hainan. Phu Quoc is on steroids with the kind of development that's already threatening its seductive image as the "last paradise" of Vietnam.

Thousands of hotel rooms, condotel units, and row upon row of cookie-cutter shophouses, villas, and residences are being built as far as the eye can see.

"They've got more rooms than Sydney, Australia. There's something like 30,000 hotel rooms, built, under construction, or in the planning stage," said Atkinson, whose firm provides financial advisory and transaction support to investors. "That's excluding Vingroup's 12,000 additional rooms, and before all the condotels, villa developments and residences, which means at least 40,000 hotel rooms."

So, what's lost when an island completely changes its identity in the course of 20 years — and who loses the most? Insider spoke to Vietnam's real estate, hotel investment, and relocation consultants, as well as tourism players, sustainable development experts, and locals in Phu Quoc to find out.

The new architects of Phu Quoc

James Clark, a Ho Chi Minh City resident since 2012, is the founder of the Future Southeast Asia newsletter. He told Insider he first visited the island in 2015.

"Since then, I've kept hearing reports of Phu Quoc's breakneck speed of development, along with the problems that go with such rapid over-development," Clark said. He revisited the island in March and was astonished by what he found.

The government, Clark said, is "intent on turning this once sleepy island into a 'sleepless city.'"

To date, Phu Quoc has attracted $16.5 billion in investments, according to an article endorsed by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism. The bulk of investment is by big-name Vietnam developers. In April, Vingroup — Vietnam's largest conglomerate — opened a $2.8 billion "tourism-entertainment universe" spread over 1,000 hectares in northern Phu Quoc.

Called Phu Quoc United Center, the center of this universe is the Grand World "sleepless city." It's chock full of round-the-clock shows, Venetian-style shophouses and gondola rides, bars, clubs, and the Corona Casino — the only licensed casino in Vietnam — which promises to keep guests awake.

The development also includes Vietnam's largest theme park, Vietnam's only open zoo, a safari, an 18-hole golf course, a hospital, and a convention center.

In southern Phu Quoc, Sun Group, another major developer, dominates the scene with more amusement parks, hotels, and resorts. This includes a water park and the world's longest sea-crossing cable car.

"I have never seen anywhere in Southeast Asia that compares to what is going on here," Clark said.

Catering to Vietnam's middle class

As of 2019, just under 180,000 people call Phu Quoc home.

Tu Quyen is one of those local residents. Her husband Tuan founded the first licensed tour company on the island, John's Tours Phu Quoc Travel Service, in 2006.

"He started by transferring guests by motorbike to attractions and hotels," she told Insider. "Then he made small connections with local fishing boat owners, taking guests to small islands to fish and snorkel."

"In the beginning, we had about 20 guests per day, mostly foreign visitors from Australia, the US, and Europe. There were no Vietnamese tourists," said Tu. In 2019, John's Tours handled 200 to 300 guests per day. In the peak period, those numbers reached as high as 500 to 700 guests a day.

"The development has helped the economy, and my company, a lot," said Tu.

The Phu Quoc International Airport opened in 2012, opening the floodgates for domestic tourism to the island. The airport primarily operates routes from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. In 2018, plans were announced for a second runway and passenger terminal to handle 14 million passengers a year by 2030, up from four million currently, according to a Center for Aviation report .

Most of the projects appear to be aimed at the fast-growing Vietnam middle-class. Many of their websites are in Vietnamese. The vast majority of the five million visitors who visited in 2019 were locals, said the experts interviewed for this article.

Marco Foerster, who is half Vietnamese, works as an international business advisory manager for Dezan Shira & Associates in Ho Chi Minh City. The company helps foreign companies settle and grow in the region. He said projects like Vin's Grand World and Sun's Grand City provide the Vietnamese middle class with a "somewhat international and cosmopolitan tourist destination without them having to leave the country."

The developers seem to have a fascination with recreating European towns and resorts in Phu Quoc. Travelers who arrive on the Southeast Asian island may be forgiven for thinking they are in Venice, the Amalfi Coast, or Paris — anywhere but Vietnam.

"Oftentimes a nice-looking backdrop suffices for social media posts and not much authenticity is required," Foerster added of the island's appeal to Vietnamese travelers.

The same, however, does not hold true of an international crowd, Foerster said: "International visitors visit Phu Quoc to experience Phu Quoc, not a colorful European town."

Jeff Redi, the managing director of Diethelm Travel Vietnam, had a similar perspective. "It might be nice for some people to see a replica of Venice or Firenze in Phu Quoc, but I doubt it is what international travelers are expecting to experience when in Vietnam."

Only qualified categories of foreign visitors have been allowed into the island since March 2020, with strict quarantine requirements. Vietnam is struggling with the highly contagious Delta variant and slow vaccination, which has clipped both international and domestic travel. Plans to use Phu Quoc as a pilot to reopen the country to international visitors in phases from October now look highly unlikely, according to Atkinson.

Mountains of trash

The conflicting interests of domestic and international tourists is not the only problem Phu Quoc is facing. The island is also groaning under the weight of waste.

Nguyen Quynh, a project manager at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Vietnam, said the plastic waste generated by tourists has already been "distressingly overwhelming" to the ecosystem. The island, she said, has a shortage of landfills.

"Without proper action, those mountains of trash will soon become a threat to the island's burgeoning tourism sector," Quynh said.

Phan Thanh Huyen, 23, works as secretary of the Board of Directors at Vinmec International Hospital in Phu Quoc. She told Insider the rapid change has created jobs for locals and boosted the island's education and healthcare systems.

Life is also more convenient, she said. For example, Phan now doesn't have to travel 25 kilometers to town to buy her favorite shampoo.

"Because of the development in the north, the biggest mart opened four months ago," she said. "Without the mart, I have to go to town or place an order online and wait one week for delivery."

But Phan also sees urbanization leading to a rise in crime and pollution on her island: "I'm afraid that Phu Quoc can't be as natural with fresh air, beautiful beach and forest as it used to be."

WWF, which has been focusing on plastic waste reduction in Phu Quoc since 2018, has seen some improvements. The city issued a plan to manage marine plastic waste by 2025 and local authorities are calling for investment in waste treatment facilities, Nguyen said. WWF's next project is to get the major developers and corporations on the island to invest in improving the protection of these areas.

The soul of the place

The question of why and for whom Phu Quoc was developed in the first place runs deep. Like, down to its master plan deep.

"There is a lack of coordination on the urbanization in Phu Quoc," said Redi of Diethelm Travel Vietnam. "It seems there is no proper master plan on how the island will look in the future and when massive construction will stop."

On the one hand, it looks like a clear play for mass tourism. "The government has done a good job at creating a scenario for mass market tourism, offering developers tax incentives, visa-free incentives, favorable land use fees and such," said Michael Piro, chief operating officer of Indochina Capital.

Yet, mass market tourism was never really the plan, according to a master plan designed by architecture firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) in partnership with the Vietnamese Institute of Urban and Rural Planning. The 2030 masterplan, which was approved in May 2010, established a broad vision and design guidelines for all future development on the island.

Instead, the plan was to design "a world-class, eco-tourism destination" that would match the island's UNESCO Global Biosphere Reserve status, the master plan shows. The WATG website touts "careful consideration" of Phu Quoc's ecosystems and "balanced tourism growth."

There's also the matter of how locals have been involved — if at all.

A May 2019 study by two local university lecturers, Vu Minh Hieu and Vu Minh Go, shows that over 96% of locals surveyed said they had not been asked for their thoughts on tourism development plans by any local authorities. Close to 75% said they have no idea what the term "sustainable tourism development" means.

The experts and locals that Insider spoke to agreed that local involvement stands to hurt the island's development.

"If we see beaches and palm trees as the only value to bring in tourists and investments, we sideline locals and don't give them a chance to actively take part in reshaping their island," said Foerster, the business advisory manager at Dezan Shira.

As Phan, the secretary who lives and works on Phu Quoc, put it, "Locals are the soul of a place. Without local culture and nature, Phu Quoc seems to be the same with many other commercial destinations."

Ecotourism on Phu Quoc is seen as a critical tool in order to provide more sustainable sources of livelihood, foster cultural protection, and biological diversity.  Phu Quoc is one of the most important tourism areas in Vietnam.  Besides its nearly 150 km long coasts, rich historical and cultural heritage, it also has a marvelous biodiversity due to climatic variety and the fact that it is an island archipelago.  Phu Quoc's natural assets includes its rich fertile soils, mountains, forests, streams, caves, canyons, coral reefs, birds and animals.

Future Thinking

The mission of Phu Quoc's ecotourism initiative is to protect the 28 island archipelagos' unique natural environment and host culture through the promotion of responsible travel and educational programs relating to sustainable tourism for residents, businesses, and visitors to Vietnam's largest island.  Those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities on Phu Quoc abide by the following universally recognized ecotoursim principles:

  •  Minimize impact (reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, use e-maps & e-guides ).
  •  Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
  • Provide positive experiences for both visitors and locals.
  • Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
  • Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people,

Agritourism

On Phu Quoc the loss of farm land resulting from the ever-increasing denitrification of the island makes it difficult for its inhabitants to produce food they need in proportions of any significance.  However the island does produce a few niche products that are of world class quality which are peppercorn and fish sauce, as well as some local specialties such as sim wine and Phu Quoc honey.

However Phu Quoc's fish sauce is far superior than the latter two hubs and it is recognized to be the best in the world and one with the highest protein (nitrogen) content.

On Phu Quoc Island you can visit fish sauce producing factories and witness first hand how this ancient sauce is made.  The ingredients needed to make the traditional fish sauce consist of sea salt and black anchovies, both of which are stored in large wooden barrels made of wood harvested from the island itself (boi loi wood).  After a 10 to 15 month long fermentation process, the “first press” is ready to be harvested and bottles.

Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island Eyes Transformation into Global Tourism Hub

After 20 years of impressive growth, vietnam's phu quoc seeks to solidify its position as a premier island destination, but challenges remain..

The Prime Minister has called for specific actions, including a shift towards a multi-center development model that preserves green spaces. (Photo source: vietnam.travel)

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Aprile 27 concluded Phu Quoc, a Vietnamese island off the coast of Cambodia, has grand potentials of becoming a major international tourism destination.

In his conclusion, the Prime Minister made clear once a small island with negligible investment, Phu Quoc now boasts over 300 projects with a combined worth of VND 412 trillion (approximately $17 billion). Tourist numbers have skyrocketed, contributing to a remarkable average economic growth rate of 19.6% annually from 2004 to 2023.

Phu Quoc's transformation includes substantial infrastructural investment. The island's transportation network, including airports and seaports, has been modernized. The number of businesses on Phu Quoc has swelled to over 4,400, with total registered capital exceeding 142 trillion VND ($5,5 billion).

Challenges and a New Vision

Yet, the island's meteoric rise hasn't been without challenges. Development outpaces important resources like clean water, reliable electricity, and waste management infrastructure. While the government envisions a "smart, modern, civilized, green" Phu Quoc, the current reality needs to catch up.

Looking ahead, the government aims to make Phu Quoc a center for high-quality ecotourism, aiming to balance economic growth with environmental protection and sustainability. The Prime Minister has called for specific actions, including a shift towards a multi-center development model that preserves green spaces.

To fulfill this vision, several focus areas have been identified. Continued investment in transportation infrastructure is needed, with emphasis on sustainability, including clean water sources, waste management, and potentially renewable energy.

Developing a skilled workforce to support digital transformation, the green economy, and tourism services is also a priority. Rigorous enforcement of environmental protections will be essential to maintain Phu Quoc's ecotourism goals and its vision of a green, clean future.

Finally, ongoing adaptation of policies is needed to attract investment while ensuring sustainable growth remains paramount.

Can Phu Quoc Succeed?

The government's focus on sustainability will be crucial to Phu Quoc's long-term success. Balancing explosive growth with environmental protection and responsible infrastructure investment will determine whether Phu Quoc can truly become a world-class island destination that rivals more established rivals in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Phu Quoc takes back nearly 28,000sqm of residents’ land for eco-tourism project

The administration in Phu Quoc, an island city off Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam, has taken coercive measures to reclaim nearly 28,000 square meters of local residents’ land to make room for an eco-tourism project.

The city said on Thursday that it took back land lots measuring nearly 21,700, 2,300, and 4,000 square meters from residents Phu Thi Dep, Trinh Van Dinh, and Dang Phu Quay, respectively.

The land lots will be used for the Rach Tram high-end eco-tourism and residential area project covering an area of 173.53 hectares.

Dep’s land was attached with three wooden houses, while the land lots belonging to Dinh and Quay were used for plant cultivation.

Houses on Dep’s land were demolished on Wednesday.

The Phu Quoc City administration called on local residents and organizations to carefully learn about the legality of land lots before making transactions.
