Talim Island: More Than Just a Speck in the Water

I usually research on the basics of the place I’m visiting before getting there, but when my Tita Fe and her husband, Tito Apin, invited me to visit his hometown in Talim Island , I decided to leave everything up to them. Without any information other than Mt. Tagapo , I found myself immersing in this little-known island with a fresh pair of eyes. It was like watching a film without reading any features, reviews, or spoilers until after the movie.

I met Tita Fe and Tito Apin at Calamba Pretel (port) in Laguna at 9 a.m. on September 25. They hired a private boat to take me to Barangay Habagatan, one of the many barangays (barrios) in Talim Island. En route I spotted Parañaque City across the lake, signaling that modern Manila isn’t too far away. The weather was cloudy with scattered rains.

As we got nearer the island, we treaded through thicker hoards of water lilies and I spotted fisher folk—some standing by the shore and others on boats—preparing their baits. We arrived at a port that said, “Welcome to Brgy. Habagatan, Sitio Macambong.” When Tita Fe saw me looking at the colorful decorations, she said, “The fiesta is next week.”

The first thing I noticed about the island is that everybody knows everybody. I would hear the neighbors asking my companions who I was. “People know immediately if someone isn’t from around here,” Tito Apin explained. “But don’t worry; people here are kind.”

I got to know the residents of Brgy. Habagatan through Tito Apin’s clan of cousins, nephews, and nieces. He grew up there, but was stationed in the United States after joining the military in the ’80s. He raised his family in California, but when he entered his mid-60s, he decided to return to his late parents’ home in Talim Island to rebuild their house. He and Tita Fe still work and reside in the US, but they visit Talim Island a few weeks a year. Relatives take turns tending to the couple’s garden during the months they are abroad. Tito Apin is the last living sibling in his family.

Getting around the barangay was a workout because the paths were mostly uphill. “It doesn’t flood here,” said Ate Baby (“ate” is Filipino term to address an older sister), one of Tito Apin’s cousins, a schoolteacher in Talim. The times it rained, I watched as rainwater slid down the canals and into the lake.

“Ma’am, who is she?” one of Ate Baby’s students asked while we walked down the street. “My daughter!” she joked. “No, really?” the student pried. I laughed. I soon found out that the townsfolk had nicknamed me, Barbie Doll.

When I was looking at the view of Laguna De Bay from an elevated home, three things immediately stood out—1. Fishing boats made mostly of bamboo that’s abundant in the island, 2. Water lilies, which Baby describes as “more of a weed than anything,” and 3. The communal humble vibe of the people.

Every 5 a.m. fishermen start gathering fresh catch of mostly tilapia, which will be sold in the markets around Rizal and Laguna. Once in a while, you’ll spot individuals grabbing tilapia by hand or by net, and then trading them to friends around the island. While eating my lunch of fried tilapia that a friendly neighbor gave us, Tito Apin’s cousins came by to help with the cooking.

There’s a lack of facilities around Talim, like a hospital or medical center, so people turn to each other for help. “What happens when someone needs an emergency doctor?” I asked Tito Apin. “They have to ride a boat and take the person to the hospital in Calamba.” My private boat ride took 30 minutes from Calamba Pretel to Talim, and it costs ₱1,500 (about US $33) to rent a boat the whole day. For public ferries, you pay about ₱40 (88c) per ride, and a boat comes by every hour.

“The government is proposing to build a reclaimed road or bridge to connect Talim to the mainland. What do you think?” Tita Fe asked me. I started imagining the fumes from daily trucks and buses coming in and out of the island, how 7-Elevens would sprout at every corner, and how the zero crime rate and slow-paced life would quickly change.

Economically there are benefits (perhaps mostly for the already rich, out-of-town investors), but through years of traveling around the Philippines, I watched as once-elusive islands (Hello, Boracay!) succumbed to the pressures of tourism, only to make us realize too late that we should have left it untainted.

“Many people here are against it,” Tita Fe said. “Even me, I feel that we should keep the island the way it is.” She said that there are many other things the government can do to improve the island, like building the church, sending regular medical missions, or putting up a health center, but to build a bridge might do more harm than good.

After my first weekend in Talim, I went back the next weekend for the town fiesta. The weather was sunny and people were busy preparing for the Sunday festivities. Trumpets blared from the other block where the marching band rehearsed. People draped colorful banderitas (flags) on the streets, and toy vendors had arrived from out of town.

The parade started on Sunday at 1 p.m. I watched in awe as dancers of all age groups and marching bands from different barangays blared their music, carried statues of their patron saint, and danced up and down the streets, in boats around the lake, and then back uphill to the church until 7 p.m.

“So when are you coming back?” the Celones clan asked me when the parade dispersed come dinnertime. “Next year!” I said. I was still reeling from the excitement of the day’s activities. “I’ll bring boxes of chocolates for the pagoda.” During the pagoda spectacle, people tossed goodies—such as candies, fruits, and packs of junk food—to children and other boat passengers. I got a plastic full of rambutan (a native Asian fruit that’s a close relative of the lychee) from a boat of teenagers.

The morning after the fiesta, I waved goodbye to the Celones clan and the people of Brgy. Habagatan. Hours later I was back in my bedroom, on my MacBook, and finally Googling for more info I may have missed about Talim Island. My heart dropped at the first article that appeared on my search feed.

A 2009 GMA report covered Talim Island after Typhoon Ondoy (international name Ketsana) ravaged the island, flooding most of its lower barangays. I couldn’t believe the dismal descriptions and photos of this island that was my home for two weekends. A more recent article by Rappler showed Talim Island years after it recovered from Ondoy, but with the same reference that many other journalists used when they wrote about Talim—that of Nunal Sa Tubig (a speck or mole in the water), a 1976 film directed by the late Ishmael Bernal.

talim island tourist spot

The movie shows a dystopian vision of Laguna De Bay, where an island (scenes were shot in Talim) is getting polluted by nearby industries. Characters are torn between preserving the island’s idyllic traditional lifestyle and succumbing to modernity that’s also destroying their natural resources.

While the articles hinted that its people are itching to leave the island, this supposed speck in the water, the Talim I got to know isn’t caught in a misfortune. Its people find a balance of tranquility that has pervaded the island for decades, while choosing which aspects of modernity to incorporate into their lifestyle. The residents take a boat to Calamba or Binangonan to shop at the malls or markets for supplies that they can’t get at the island. Their kids go to high school and/or college in Calamba, Manila, or other cities in the Philippines.

Like Tito Apin, many residents who have found a more financially rewarding life elsewhere still come back to Talim Island—to rebuild their old homes, reconnect with loved ones, and do what they do best, which is to help each other. There’s still a lot of room for progress, but it’s best to leave the decisions not to politicians living in mansions hours from the island or shady corporations looking to expand their business, but to the people who know and love the island best—its residents.

Hello. What a nice read! Have you gone back here? Would you recommend this place to be visited by a female solo traveler? Thanks 🙂

2015 was the last time I was there! Based on my 2015 trip, I know you can do a roundtrip to either Mt. Tagapo or Talim Island:

https://katewashere.com/2015/10/03/beginners-guide-to-mt-tagapo/

I was able to stay in Talim Island for a weekend because my mom’s friend, who is now a US citizen, grew up in Talim and has a home there.

I have been here in the island once. My daughter took me in 2019. What’s really interesting to me is:

1. The Laguna lake is a shaped W, but in Hebrew is a “SHIN” denoting something about the “Creator” if the universe that is.

2. The satellite view underneath those waters surrounding Talim Islands looks like ancient civilization.

Very interesting.

Oh wow, thanks for telling me this! I’d love to go back one day.

Visiting a not so modernized and commercialized place is really a break from the monotonous and busy place here in the city. That’s what I felt when we visited Caramoan. Not much tourists, very peaceful neiggborhood, with very relaxing view and beaches! 🙂 I also feel the same thing whenever we visit our grandma’s place in Bicol. Everyone in the neighborhood knows that we’re not from there. 🙂 I love festivities too. And that boodle fight is really enticing. I’m definitely hungry right now. 🙂 I’m really entertained and informed as well about this post of yours regarding Talim Island. 🙂

I love reading your post.Great article! Such overwhelming to discover this place, meet new people that are full of joy despite of the simple living. How I wish that the government help Talim island as this place is one of the precious one that need to be cherish!Thank you so much for sharing this.

It’s really a nice feeling to unwind yourself after a busy life in the city and went to a place like this. It’s the typical filipino lifestyle, the fiesta like that, boodle fight and how hospitable they are. So nice tho!

Our dear Kate,

Talim Island is my “world” with so many varied and diversified memories in any conceivable settings. And , yes, where my poor beginning reflects my humility and love for the have nots will never end.

My heartfelt thanks to your remarkable and very touching article.

Tita Fe and I love you; therefore, we are here for you , anytime!

Best wishes!

Your Guide to Hiking in the Philippines

Mt. Tagapo

Mt. Tagapo Talim Island Binangonan Rizal Climb Guide (Itinerary + Tips)

Introduction.

Mt. Tagapo is a cone-shaped mountain located in Barangay Janosa, Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal. It offers stunning views of Laguna de Bay and Rizal province. Mt. Tagapo has a height of 438 meters above sea level or 1,437 feet. It is considered to be the highest point of Talim Island. Without a doubt, Talim Island is the name of the island because of its shape like a blade, ripping across Laguna de Bay from the south and to the north. Moreover, its distinctiveness as an island community within a vast lake is incomparable and exceptional.

In the past, Talim Island was considered a stratovolcano and the whole island is like a corpse. However, as time passes by it is now part of Laguna Caldera. Mt. Tagapo is commonly known as Mt. Susong Dalaga in the native language. It was said that the mountain was named as such due to the form of a young woman’s breast at the peak of the mountain. On the other hand, Mt. Tagapo came from the Tagalog word “Taga” which means “to chop” with regard to the exercise of chopping bamboo that is dispersed around the mountain.

Mt. Tagapo is situated at the heart of Laguna Lake which is considered the largest lake in the Philippines. Its remarkable topography and beautiful terrain make it an excellent hiking destination both for beginner and seasoned hikers. Mt. Tagapo has a total trail length of 6.5 kilometers back and forth. Although Mt. Tagapo is not as high as other mountains in the Rizal province it rewards mountaineers with an astonishing and unforgettable view.

In order for someone to hike this mountain, one must board a passenger boat going to Talim Island. In general, the island is politically under the municipality of Binangonan, Rizal. At the summit of Mt. Tagapo hikers and mountaineers have the chance to see the beautiful Laguna Lake and nearby mountains. Without a doubt, its neighbor mountain Mt. Sembrano is already a popular hiking destination among beginners in the hiking scene. On the other hand, Mt. Tagapo serves as an alternative mountain for beginners to try.

Mt. Tagapo

Name: Mt. Tagapo Difficulty: 2/9 Elevation: 438 MASL Jump-Off: Barangay Janosa (Talim Island), Binangonan, Rizal, Philippines Hours to summit: 1.5 hours Features: Grassland, bamboo forest, and a fantastic view of Laguna de Bay and Rizal province.

My trip to Mt. Tagapo

I said to myself in the past days that it’s never too late for my summer adventures and outdoor cravings. So one day, I decided to join an organized tour going to Mt. Tagapo in the month of June. Our group consists of ten sure joiners coming from different parts of Metro Manila, Cavite, and Bulacan. It was Sunday morning when I joined the other members of the group in our assembly place near the gas station in Makati City. After several minutes of waiting and preparing our things, our private van started heading toward our main destination.

Laguna de Bay

Our private van reaches Binangonan Port at 6 am after two hours of land travel. From the Binangonan Port, we ride a motorized boat going to the jump-off point of Mt. Tagapo. It was around 7:15 am when we reached the Barangay Janosa and our group registered and get a local guide. Before we start the hike we have a one-minute prayer to God to thank him and to guide us throughout our entire hike and trip that day. A few moments later we started the hike going to the summit of Mt. Tagapo.

The trail of Mt. Tagapo

After one hour of hiking, we reach the bamboo forest section of Mt. Tagapo where we take a nine-minute rest. We eat our trail food and we drink water to conquer our thirst. Afterward, we continue the assault going to the summit passing through cogon grasses that has a height of five feet. While hiking, I said to myself this is the kind of ambiance I need because of the fresh air, beautiful wildflowers, and superb greeny views.

It was around 10:20 am when we reached the summit of Mt. Tagapo. We take another rest and we have our early lunch. After done having lunch, we take pictures of the beautiful surrounding of Mt. Tagapo and we watch birds flying in the sky.

summit marker of Mt. Tagapo

From the summit, we can see a 360-degree view of the Laguna de Bay, some municipalities and coastal towns of Rizal, and the nearby mountain Mt. Sembrano. To the south, we can clearly see Mt. Kalisungan, Mt. Atimla, Mt. Cristobal, and Mt. Banahaw. To the southwest, we can see prominent mountains such as Mt. Makiling and Mt. Maculot . For this reason, our group appreciate the view of nature on an exposed trail and we stayed at the summit for one hour and thirty minutes.

the view at the summit of Mt. Tagapo

We take so many wonderful photos at the mountain peak and we have our group pictures. Without a doubt, the view at the summit of Mt. Tagapo fulfilled my summer adventure and outdoor memories. We start our descent at noon and our mountain guide told us that the locals used bamboo to produce secondary products such as charcoal and furniture.

We reach back the jump-off point after two hours of moderate descending on an easy trail composed of giant grasses and cogon grasses. After that, we ride a passenger boat going back to the port. I noticed that the wind and waves are so strong during the afternoon but our motorized boat manage to get over through rough waters. Moreover, our group witnessed how vast the Laguna de Bay or Laguna Lake is. In my opinion, it’s like a sea in the heart of Laguna province.

Laguna de Bay

It was around 2:20 pm when we arrived at the Binangonan Port and we thank our boat guide for our safe trip. Then we go inside our private van and the van headed back towards Makati City. While we were on the road trip, one member of the group invited me to join the Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) to be held in Sitio Boso Boso, Antipolo City in the coming month of August. The Basic Mountaineering Course will teach us a ton of different things such as choosing the right mountaineering equipment, doing first aid, and organizing a climb.

Binangonan Port

He further explained to me that there will be a rented jeep at the meeting place near Gateway Mall and also there will be a BMC certification to be given after the mountaineering course. However, at that time, I’m still undecided. At 5 pm we reached Makati City and we bid goodbye to each other members of the group. I arrived home at 6 pm. For this reason, I thank God for a safe summer adventure in Binangonan, Rizal, and for guiding us all throughout the entire adventure.

In my perspective, Mt. Tagapo has a well-established trail going through its steep slope which is very similar to Mt. Gulugod Baboy in Batangas province. Undoubtedly this is definitely a very good mountain for first-time hikers. On the whole, my trip to Mt. Tagapo sums up this amazing quote “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.”

Reminders and Tips:

  • Just pack light. Mt. Tagapo is a minor climb and it’s an ideal mountain for beginners.
  • Registration and getting a local guide are required before climbing Mt. Tagapo for safety purposes. You will secure a local guide at the barangay hall of Barangay Janosa, Talim Island.
  • It is important to bear in mind that the last passenger boat ride at the port is around 4 to 6 PM. On the other hand, passenger boat rides are available at the port as early as 6 am.
  • Camping at the summit of Mt. Tagapo is not allowed for safety purposes. You may camp only at designated camping sites that are located fifteen minutes away from the summit.
  • The trail classification in Mt. Tagapo is well established, easy to navigate, and has the perfect combination of moderate ascent and some flats in between. The hike to the summit takes about two hours only while the total hours to and from the summit of Mt. Tagapo could take only four hours or less. Therefore, it’s an easy hike suitable for kids and adults.
  • If you’re going for a day hike, it is advisable to start the hike as early as 8 am to avoid the intense heat of the sun. Moreover, if you’re hiking in the summer season, it’s highly recommended to bring an umbrella because Mt. Tagapo summit has no shade and is very exposed to the sun.
  • There are no small stores in the mountain so it’s better to bring enough water before riding a boat going to Talim Island. Also, bring your own trail food to minimize your expense.
  • As always please follow the Leave No Trace principle. For instance, don’t litter and vandalize. No picking of plants and bring your garbage with you to keep the mountain clean.
  • Restrooms and wash area are present at the main jump-off point.
  • The local guide fee for a day hike is 500 pesos and it’s good for 4 people. The overnight fee is 1000 pesos and the environmental fee is 40 pesos.
  • There’s an open hole at the summit so be cautious when taking pictures or walking around the summit.
  • Bringing of a flying drone is allowed.
  • There are no blood leeches or “Limatik” in Mt. Tagapo.
  • According to the local tour guide, during the wet season, the trail becomes difficult and very muddy. On the other hand, the coast guard may cancel the boat ride if the weather is too bad.
  • There are two contrasting trails from Barangay Janosa to the summit of Mt. Tagapo. The first trail is covered with a bamboo forest. The second is an easy and open trail in grassland and farmland with more flat grounds than moderate ascents.
  • Bring jackets and fleece blankets when you’re staying overnight at the mountain as the temperature during the night can get very cold. In addition, there is insect and bugs around the mountain so better bring insect repellant.
  • The approximate budget for a solo day hike is 1300 pesos because you will simply shoulder the local guide fee and transportation expense. On the other hand, the estimated budget for overnight is 1800 pesos.
  • Cellphone signals are mostly present at the jumpoff point and in the upper reaches of the mountain.
  • Please take note that the UV Express fare from Edsa Shaw going to Binangonan highway is 100 pesos and the tricycle ride going to Binangonan Port cost 20 pesos per person. Meanwhile, the boat ride from Binangonan Port (Pritel) to Barangay Janosa is 65 pesos and it’s a two-way trip.
  • Last but not least, If you’re coming from northern Luzon province, I highly recommend getting a packaged tour when you plan to visit Mt. Tagapo so you don’t have to worry about the transportation going in and out. Inclusion in the Mt. Tagapo package tour is a roundtrip van transfer from Manila to Rizal and vice versa, a roundtrip boat transfer from Binangonan to Talim Island, and vice versa, a local guide fee, registration fee, environmental fee, tour coordinator fee, and driver’s meal. Meanwhile, the excluded in the package tour are personal meals and food.

How to Go to Mt. Tagapo

  • From EDSA Crossing, Mandaluyong, ride a van or a jeep going to Binangonan, Rizal.
  • Then from Binangonan town proper, walk or ride a tricycle going to the port.
  • From the port, ride a public passenger boat going to Talim Island. Alight at Barangay Janosa. The approximate travel time for the boat ride is one hour.
  • From Cubao, ride a UV Express van going to Cogeo, Antipolo, and tell the driver to drop you in front of Sta. Lucia Mall.
  • Then walk your way towards Robinsons and ride a jeep going to Binangonan Port.
  • From Binangonan Port, ride a boat bound to Talim Island and drop off at Barangay Janosa.
  • From Cubao, ride a jeepney beside the Farmers Market or Ali Mall going to Binangonan, Rizal, and tell the driver to drop you at Pritil Port.
  • Then from Pritil Port, ride a boat going to Talim Island and drop off at Barangay Janosa.

Visiting Talim Island

By BṺM TENORIO JR., The Philippine STAR Published May 07, 2021 5:00 am

It had always been the case: I would stand by the shore of the lake ogling the view of Bundok ng Susong Dalaga on Talim island in front of me. The vast Laguna Lake, murky and mysterious, would always lie between me and the mountain. For many years, I dreamt of visiting Talim island, which is located in Binangonan, Rizal.

My late father, who doubled as a fisherman if he was not busy in the rice fields, would always bear the lilting accent of the people of Talim after coming from the island. He would tell of joyful stories of his fishing experience and how accommodating the people there were. I grew up calling soft-drink straws pahothot  because my father learned that term from the island people who became his friends.

When biking became my newfound passion, all the more I became enamored of Talim island because my favorite  puruntal  (wharf) in Cabuyao or Calamba would always be the highlight of my short ride before sunrise or during sunset.

From my vantage point, I would see the sun rising from the precipices of Bundok ng Susong Dalaga. Majestic. Mesmerizing. If I parked my bike by the shore during sundown, the waters of Laguna Lake turned soft orange while the mountain remained blue. Mysterious. Marvelous.

Until last Sunday, on a whim, I decided to take the chance of visiting Talim island.

Before us was the soon-to-be-conquered Bundok ng Susong Dalaga. Behind us was the ridge of Tagaytay. To our right was the cloud-veiled Mount Makiling. To our left was the hazy view of Metro Manila. Inside me was a joyful soul made even happier by the unplanned adventure.

I had just parked Lover, my white bicycle, on the edge of the Baywalk in Calamba City. My friend Beejay Lapinid, who joined on my sunrise ride, had also parked his bike beside mine. It took us some 30 minutes to reach the Baywalk from Gulod on a chill ride.

talim island tourist spot

We walked to the makeshift berth to avoid getting in contact with other bikers on the Baywalk. Attached to the berth was the makeshift dock. I admired the view of Talim island from afar, the yolk of the morning sun rising above the mountain.

Sweet was the breeze. The waters were calm. Music was provided by birds quacking as they dove to catch their meal from the lake. The silence at the Baywalk was pierced only by patrolling barangay officials who always reminded everyone in the area to wear their face masks. With my face mask on, I continued basking in the rays of the morning sun.

Then an outrigger made its way to where I was. A woman in the banca threw a rope to a man standing on the edge of the dock. The man, with precise agility, caught the end of the rope and quickly tied it around a steel pillar.

There was joy and excitement in their voices. I gathered that a couple in their mid-50s ferried their daughter and son-in-law to the Baywalk. From the boat emerged a motorcycle. One man lifted it from the banca and another man on the dock caught it safely. That gave me the idea that I could also load my bike on the outrigger and finally see Talim island.

talim island tourist spot

Next thing I knew, I was paying P1,500 through GCash to the daughter of the couple for a round-trip day tour of Talim island.

When our bicycles were loaded on the banca , my heart was doing a cartwheel. Finally, I would see Talim island. The couple who owned the outrigger, Danny and Memeth Punelas, were from the island. Danny was the helmsman; Memeth, the bearer of the  tikin  (a long bamboo pole used in pushing the boat forward).

A little after 8 a.m., we started to sail away. The life vests were ready. I couldn’t contain my excitement. A flock of  kanaway  birds followed us as they flew above the boat.

When we got near the sitio of Banaba in barangay Rayap, the barrio of the couple, a colorful coastal village, emerged. The scene reminded me of a quaint village in Passau, Germany, when I once took a cruise on the Danube River. There was an instance that the village also reminded me of a community in Kom-Ombo when I joined a Nile River cruise in Egypt. But Talim island was different. It had my heart long before I set foot in it.

After an hour, we docked right outside the nipa house of the couple. A blaring “Happy Birthday” was being played on the neighborhood karaoke. I remained calm at the porch of the couple’s dwelling place. Before me was the lake, almost the color of jade in its beauty. The wind made love to my face. I closed my eyes and embraced the breeze. Danny unloaded our bikes. We would ride the wind in Talim island.

The couple cautioned us to not pedal away with our stomachs empty. Little did we know that while we were cruising the lake, Memeth already sent a message to her beautiful daughter Danica to prepare breakfast for us.

So we were served crispy fried tunay na tilapia  (the ones caught in the wild and not bred in fishponds) and ginisang balatong  ( monggo ). More “Happy Birthday” choruses were played as we partook of our sumptuous meal. Next thing we knew, we were being invited to the seventh birthday of a girl in the neighborhood.

Beejay and I wore our helmets and rode the wind after breakfast. The very narrow yet well-paved roads of Talim island were exhilarating. Jutting on either side of the roads were native bamboo trees. To the left was a ravine that also gave way to a mesmerizing view of the lake. The view was the reward for every uphill climb we encountered.

Both my bike gears were set on 1-1, for easy climbing on undulating slopes along the road. Children shouted “Bikers! Bikers!” when we rolled past them, their eyes filled with innocence. Elderly men in the many wharfs in Rayap were accommodating and funny.

By 1 p.m., we were back at the house of Memeth and Danny. A lunch spread of grilled tunay na tilapia  and pizza was on the table. It was a sumptuous lunch, made more sumptuous by the calming vista of the lake.

A little before 3 p.m., we sailed back to the Baywalk in Calamba. There was joy in my heart and peace on the lake.

I will be back in Talim island.

No travel adventure is complete without food. Residents of Talim Island have homegrown tasty treats. If you want some native rice cakes, check out the locals in Brgy. Tabon and Sapang. Homemade halo-halo is available in Brgy. Janosa, located just beside the barangay hall, while milky soft bread is the pride of a bakeshop in Brgy. Bombong.

4. Mt. Tagapo

This is one of the main attractions on the island. It’s a two-hour trek with a promise of a breathtaking view of the provinces of Quezon, Laguna, Cavite, and the famed Manila skyline. You can pitch a tent and spend the night atop Mt. Tagapo . Just make sure you register and inform the base camp and the local barangay of your itinerary. The take-off point for the trek is at Brgy. Janosa.

Brgy Malabor Tibiao - Lambaklad Fishing

The lake abounds with tilapia, bangus, kanduli, ayungin and other freshwater fish. Don’t hesitate to ask around and inquire which banca owners are willing to give you a boat ride to the fishing ground.

2. Boat ride adventure

Check out this raw video of our cruise along Laguna Lake with Talim Island as the backdrop. You can rent small bancas to take you on a cruise along Talim Island. The best time to do this is between 6 to 8am or 4 to 6pm. The best months to do this are between February and May.

1. Catching the sunset

110 Must Try Activities To Complete Your Ultimate Talim Island Experience

If you love sunsets , Talim Island will never disappoint. You can get different views depending on which barangay you are in. Some of the best views can be found in the barangays of Tuna, Talim Pt.

, Tabon, and Band.

Have you been to Talim Island yet? If not, it’s time to include it on your bucket list and have a fun-filled adventure.

talim island tourist spot

If you’re from the Metro, Batangas might be the place at the top of your head when asked about weekend destinations.

Well, I can’t blame you. Aside from its proximity to the city, Batangas offers scenic beaches. And I know what you’re thinking: the perfect quick escape from the bustling streets of the city!

Batangas is actually famous, rightfully earning its spot on the list of summer-slash weekend-getaway household names!

More than the usual

There are a lot more to discover in Batangas.

Yes, aside from the famous beaches in Calatagan, Tingloy, Lian, Lobo, and San Juan that tourists frequent. There are still a lot of beaches that haven’t made it into the trendly list yet, tucked away from the crowd. And early this year, we visited a gem that’s perfectly nestled at the edge of the Philippine map – Talim Beach , in Luyahan, Lian, Batangas!

talim island tourist spot

Talim prides itself in its long, wide strip of cream-colored sand lapped gently by the signature shallow waters of Lian. Who would’ve thought that after only a three-hour drive, and ten-minute boat ride, you’ll reach paradise?

Well, that’s Talim for us. With its breathtaking virgin coasts, it most definitely is a suitable spot to reset and recharge without the noise of usual beach getaways!

More of Talim

I think what I fell in love with was Talim’s rawness.

It, being a virgin island, allows you to soak up its beauty without much pretense. You can immerse yourself more in nature – Talim is surrounded by it. With the seas around and some mountains behind.

talim island tourist spot

You can simply pitch a tent as you revel in the picturesque landscape of the island. Otherwise, you can enjoy Talim to the fullest as you take on various activities offered by the resorts – may it be beach-combing, swimming, fishing, snorkeling, or island hopping.

I love that Talim doesn’t run out of something to offer.

Reasons Why You Should Have A Cat at Home

A bonus full-on camping experience awaits as the island wraps itself in the cool nighttime breeze (there’s no electricity on the island so don’t forget to charge your gadgets up, and bring a power bank).

Seize the opportunity to stargaze as you warm yourself up around the campfire. Definitely a camping experience that will make your stay at Talim worthwhile!

Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, Talim Beach is the perfect place to camp and unwind without breaking the bank (we just spent a little over Php1,000 each for a group of two).

With the travel guidelines becoming less and less restrictive, now might be a good time to grab your bikinis and essentials, and catch up with the summer you might’ve missed, down south!

After all, a quick beach getaway is never a wrong idea.

Exploring Talim Island, the 'mole' in the waters of Laguna de Bay

Something about the flooded island in the middle of Laguna de Bay brings a creeping sense of déjà vu. A village marooned on the lake, ravaged in the name of progress then cast aside because it is a mere dot in the water...it is the story of Nunal sa Tubig (A Speck in the Water) coming true.

How to Get To Mt. Tagapo from Metro Manila

  • If coming from EDSA Shaw Blvd. , take a UV Express (van) or jeep bound for Binangonan town proper. There are transport terminals in SM Megamall, Greenfield District (EDSA Central), Starmall EDSA Shaw, and Robinsons Galleria. Fare: PHP 50 (van) / around PHP 40 (jeep); Travel time: 1.5 to 2 hours

  • If driving along Ortigas Ave. , continue to Ortigas Ext., then Manila East Road

Hiking Fees   (as of January 2021)

  • Environmental/Registration fee: PHP 30
  • Trail Guide: PHP 500 per group (required)

Essential Tips and Trip Notes

  • Passenger boats are available at the port as early as 5:00 AM
  • Apart from your usual protective gears against sun's harmful rays, bring an umbrella . Mt. Tagapo's summit is drenched in sunlight; it is covered with nothing but cogon grasses of about 4 feet. Also, the earlier the hike, the better.
  • The entire hike may get sweltering especially during the summer months.
  • Trail can get muddy and the tide can be harsh during the rainy season. Coast guard may also cancel boat trips if it rains hard.
  • There's an open pit at the summit; be careful with your selfies or jump shots.
  • Bring your own drinking water. Not only it will cost you less, it would also help reduce plastic waste as you don't have to buy bottled ones.
  • Since January 2021, wearing face mask and face shield and bringing alcohol is required . No need for a medical certificate or travel pass.
  • For more info, you may coordinate with Brgy. Janosa's SK thru their Facebook page .

How to Get to Treasure Mountain in Tanay, Rizal

Via Private Car

The easiest and fastest way to get to the campsite is by your car. Just use Google Maps/Waze to get directions. You can rent a car, van , or bus here if you don’t have a private vehicle.

Once there, you can either park it up Treasure Mountain or leave your vehicle at the jump-off point. The slope going up might be too rough for sedans so it’s not advisable. At the jump-off point, you can either walk or hire a tricycle to take you to the top.

Via Public Transportation

Ride a jeep bound for Cogeo Gate 2 or Padilla. Ask to be dropped off at Gate 2. From there, you’ll need to ride a jeep going to Sampaloc. This route is available from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM only. Get off at Sitio Maysawa or the tricycle terminal in Brgy. Cuyambay. Then, you can walk or hire a tricycle to get the rest of the way to Treasure Mountain.

Alternatively, you can ride a jeep going to the Tanay Public Market. At the market, ride a jeep bound for Cuyambay. You’ll get off at the same stop: Sitio Maysawa. Bear in mind that commuting to Treasure Mountain will definitely take more time due to the waiting, pick-ups, and drop-offs of jeeps.

Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs

talim island tourist spot

The Angono Petroglyphs are petroglyphs carved into a rock wall in Angono, Rizal, Philippines. It consists of 127 human and animal figures engraved on the rockwall probably carved during the late Neolithic, or before 2000 BC. They are the oldest known work of art in the Philippines. These inscriptions clearly show stylized human figures, frogs and lizards, along with other designs that may have depicted other interesting figures but erosion may have caused it to become indistinguishable. The engravings are mostly symbolic representations and are associated with healing and sympathetic magic. The site is sacred for indigenous Tagalog folk religion and is believed to be a home for anitos.

The site has been declared by the National Museum of the Philippines as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973. It is also included in the list of the World Inventory of Rock Art in 1985 and historic sites of the World Monuments Watch and World Monuments Funds and part of the Philippines’ tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Read More:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angono_Petroglyphs

Calinawan Cave

talim island tourist spot

Situated in Barangay Tandang Kutyo of Tanay, Rizal, Calinawan Cave is an enormous cave system composed of multiple levels and various chambers and openings. History tells us that the cave served as hideout by Filipino revolutionaries during Spanish-American war, and a shelter during the Second World War. How it got its name, according to local folklore, has a touch of history too, as it was where the Japanese and American troops settle their disputes, thus Calinawan from the Filipino word “linaw” which means to settle or to clear.

But more than its historical significance, the natural beauty of the cave’s interiors and chambers are magnets that attract a lot of people that even films and television productions often use the cave as their shooting location. Sadly, some of them left indelible and irreversible damages to the cave.  Read More:  https://www.lakwatsero.com/spots/calinawan-cave-tanay-rizal/#sthash.9CidjRjc.dpbs

Nagpatong Rock consists of two towering limestone cliffs facing each other. These towers seem to be made up of layers of huge blocks of rock place on top of each other hence the name Nagpatong, from Tagalog word “ patong ” or to put on top. But how these rock formations were formed is a secret only nature knows.

The most photographed view of Nagpatong Rock is the one with a flat top which is usually taken from the other rock formation. To accomplish this shot, your guide will assist you to the flat top before going to the other rock formation to take the shot.

Palo Alto Falls

talim island tourist spot

Baras, in Rizal province, is a simple little place only about a one hour drive from Quezon City. Here in Baras is where you will find Palo Alto Falls. Palo Alto Falls are actually located in the Palo Alto Leisure and Residential Estates. This is a 200 hectare prime residential and commercial estate.

From the parking area, there are 249 concrete steps to get to the actual foot of Palo Alto Falls. The falls are about 300 metres up from the parking area. However, don’t be alarmed as the path is fully concreted/paved and only takes about 10-15 minutes. Along the way, you’ll walk through thick forests split by a small stream, with water gently trickling down through the rocks.

The grounds are beautifully landscaped and have been well thought out, making it a safe and easy place to visit and enjoy. The waterfall itself is a natural waterfall. As part of the landscaping effort, the rock pool into which the water cascades has been paved so that it’s easy to walk around in. This is great for bare feet!  Read More:  https://www.deztreks.com/palo-alto-falls-baras-rizal/

Hike to mt. tagapo, talim island.

Sometimes, we tend to take places in our backyard for granted. The nearer a destination is from where we live, the less it is on our tourist radar. For instance, Art’s hometown is Binangonan, but for some reason, we’ve both never been to Mt. Tagapo, a mountain that falls under the jurisdiction of the towns of Binangonan and Cardona in Rizal province (though it’s only accessible from the Binangonan side). Mt. Tagapo, referred to by locals as  Susong Dalaga , is located in the middle of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines. The first weekend of the year seemed like a good time as any to scale a mountain, so we we decided to finally head there.
