Faultless experience

Faultless experience over the 4 nights we stayed in iceland, we use them for golden circle, blue lagoon, volcano tour and northan lights. Very well organised, great guides.

July 18th Bus left customers at Blue Lagoon

July 18th, Reykjvik Excursions bus left 4 customers at Blue Lagoon with no way to return to Hotels or get back to Reykjvik. The driver did not count passengers prior to drop. Nothing was said nor was a count of travellers done. I asked when I exited to the Lagoon “Will the return bus be here?”. He said 6 o’clock”. A group, 4 of us exited Lagoon building looking for the bus when he drove off. We may have been 1 minute late. The day before, July 17th, on a Volcano excursion, the leader did multiple counts and verification of names on a proper list. Reykjvik Excursions my first and hopefully last bad experience in Iceland. Lucky for us a neighbouring bus was willing to let us pay 3400 for a ride back to Reykjvik or we would be stuck at Blue Lagoon.

Action packed and highly stimulating experience

We used Reykjavik Excursions for the Golden Circle & Langjökull Snowmobiling day trip. It’s quite an action packed and highly stimulating experience. The Iceland landscape is so spectacular and dramatic. From the moment you are collected from your hotel, to the moment they take you back, you are well looked after. The Guide provided plenty of information and history about Iceland as we made our way around the ‘Golden Circle’. They may also recommend the hot chocolate at the Gullfoss waterfall…. I would also. I’d definitely recommend doing this tour. It’s very difficult to pick a highlight but seeing the sunrise in Þingvellir National Park was particularly memorable. Thank you.

Couldn’t fault this company

Couldn’t fault this company. Tour guides were so informative and helpful. We did four tours and all were so different and enjoyable. It’s a beautiful, unique country and really want to go back.

Rude driver wouldn’t drop us at the stop we paid extra for!

I was pleased enough with the airport transfer on arrival but... we paid extra for hotel drop off on the way back from the Blue Lagoon. The driver refused to drop us at our designated stop and wouldn’t engage in polite conversation about where he would drop us. Real shame. If the company is interested in following this up it was the 18:15 on 30 January 2020.

All faultless 🚌

Had 3 tours over 5 days, Northern Lights, Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon — all extremely well organised, all transport turned up on time, would recommend.

Could not see northern lights, golden circle tour was ok

The Golden Circle tour was ok. But not at all satisfied with the Northern Lights tour RE62. I think they hoodwinked everybody. We had booked for Saturday 2/2/2019 and was cancelled most probably due to the Northern Lights Forecast being moderate. We were very happy when it was announced that on Sunday 3/2/2019 that the tour would go ahead. But I had my doubts as the the forecast was still moderate. We did not see the norther lights. I know that nobody can predict. But taking us on a day that the forecast was moderate is unacceptable. It is basically lying to customers

Avoid the flybus

Took the flybus from the airport to our hotel. It's not cheap. We got to the bus station and then it all went to pot. 40 mins in - 6 and no sign of the other bus which was supposed to take us to our hotel. None of the other buses could take us as our colour tickets weren't the right ones and we had to wait for our bus... We kept being told it would only be 5 minutes, otherwise we would have walked it.. Not the best arrival ritual. Would not recommend.

Reykjavik Excursions South Coast…

Reykjavik Excursions South Coast Adventure Did not clearly communicate that we needed to board a generic transfer bus and that the bus driver would not be calling out or asking for any specific participants for said tour. Did not call any of the contact information available prior to or after when our 6person party “missed” the bus despite having waited there for 50 minutes. Did not take any responsibility nor express any concern for the confusion and/or the inadequate directions printed on the trip voucher. Thankfully, we had booked our remaining tours with other smaller companies, that approached their excursions with more attention to detail and consideration, so that our first visit to Iceland was still an amazing experience.

Fantastic trip with these guys last month! Pavel the driver and Eric the tour guide were both brilliant, made the trip very enjoyable!! Highly recommended!

Fine - acceptable

Fine. Nothing to write home about. Convenience wise its good. Central and drops you at hotels if need be. Service wise I think it just depends on your guide - I had a couple of brilliant ones (golden circle in particular our guide was great). On the flip side the guy doing the northern lights tour seemed like he didn't want to be there. On more than one occasion we were held up because those with E-Tickets (half the bus!) were told to get off the bus, queue up and get a paper ticket, that the guide then just took and put in a bag, even though he could see it was from their own site. Made no logical sense! Price - Expensive, but that's Iceland! About the same as other providers out there. Would probably use again if I returned and wanted a tour. That said, would probably just hire a car for a little more freedom!

Worst tour operator

They are the most unorganized transportation operator I have ever seen. We went on a 2 week vacation and went on 9 tours (2 with this company). Do not book unless only option. First, you essentially have to be in the cold for an hour at times in order to get in the transfer bus. It is way to cold in Iceland to wait outside an hour for the bus since they say you have to be there 30 mins prior and pickup can be up to 30 mins after time. First trip, email did not say this and said pickup at 1pm. I was there by 12:40, the bus left before then so we called they said take a taxi. Note I paid a lot to have the transfer bus piece. Second trip with them. We were 35 mins earlier (since they come early sometimes and leave you) and they never came. I called and they ended up picking us up 35 mins late. Therefore an icicle when outside for an hour before pickup. When they did get us we were the only people on the transfer bus. I think they forgot our booking. Our tour then had to wait for us and we couldn’t seat next to my partner. Horrible service. Oh and our second trip, I get nature can make it not possible, bit they continued the trip (even though weather was very overcast and noted not likely to see lights). We drove to one spot and driver gave up. The rescheduled trip, next night, they canceled due to weather. Notice, if they cancel the primary trip they refund but if they canceled the reschedule no refund so we paid a lot of money for nothing. I had one more trip with another vendor in Iceland, it went great. I highly recommend any other vendor.

Date of experience : November 26, 2023

we will pay you in a few business days, but nothing happends.

Please allow a few business days to process your request due to a high volume of emails. Thank you for your patience! 18 days later, no refund of a cancelled trip. and counting no reply to mail, do not pick the phone. nothing zero zip Do not book with them - you will get charged whether they do the trip or not.

They did not turn up but claim there did. I waited an hour in the cold . Later found out this isn’t rare. They are not interested in refunding for their mistakes. Promised tracking info. Don’t use

The tour buses do not have any signs at the front of the bus showing destination. We waited an hour, and had to get a taxi in the end to the sky lagoon.

Lazy Drivers and horrible customer service

Avoid this company if you can. We booked them through our hotel to take us to the airport and they never showed up. The hotel called them and basically said to bad, our driver said he was there and they were not, the only thing we can do for them is get them on a later bus, 2pm. (Which we could not do because we had to catch a flight) and they would not issue us refund. They didn’t even apologize. We had been in the lobby of our hotel at 11:45. Pick up was between 12-12:30pm. We had seen two busses come and go. One left abruptly after dropping of his passenger, and the other driver was from Reykjavik excursions, but he was going to the sky lagoon. No they bus showed up. Even though they say the GPS on the bus logged him at our hotel at 12:09pm. Did he pull up out of sight? He didn’t walk into the hotel looking for us, because if he had he would have found us waiting for him inside the door. The driver did not complete his job. We had to take a cab to the airport which cost us 16,500 on top of what we already paid Reykjavik Excursions. This is no way to do business.

Great company, great service and amazing day tours

Great company, the staff and guides are very helpful, everything on time and well organized and you get to see the most incredible places on iceland with the Golden Circle and snowmobiling tour, which we did. It is a great tour, you have to do whilst in Iceland. We booked it already from home, which was great so we could do it on the first day and didn't have to worry if we get a space on the day we wanted to do the tour. The whole tour day is all planned out and well organized. Our pick up was on time and the tour departed as scheduled. We arrived just in time for an amazing sunrise at the first stop at the lake. The view over the lake and the landscape is incredible. We had enough time at each stop (lake, Geysir and the waterfall) to wander around, explore and take some photos. The tour guide was very nice and told interesting stories about iceland. The highlight of the tour was definitely the snowmobiling, it was so much fun. Everything was super organized, without long waiting times. We got gloves, a headband, an overall and a helmeth. The area where the snowmobiling took place was all white and exactly what i expected from iceland, very beautiful. We had about 20 minutes each on the snowmobile. If you want to do something unique I absolutely recommend this tour. We also booked the airport transport with Reykjavik Excursion. It is a very convenient way to get to Reykjavik. Buses depart every 20 minutes. Easy to exchange the voucher at the desk at the airport. I thought it was the best way to get into the city. I would buy the ticket with a drop of at the hotel again, as it is very convenient, especially if you arrive late.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE

I do not recommend Reykjavik Excursions and will not utilize them when I go back to Iceland. Worst customer service ever. I have been to all seven continents including the Arctic and never have I encountered a customer service agent so rude. Please Reykjavik Excursions management, check out all calls received August 13 between 10:35 to 10:50, I was not able to note the name of the discourteous agent. I asked for the manager and spoke with Stephen. On my booking confirmation it says pick-up from the chosen city bus stop is 10:30 so I was at the bus stop at 10:05. I know I must look for a Reykjavik Excursions bus however I still ask every single bus that arrives if I am supposed to go with them, just to make sure. The guy from Gray Line was so courteous and kind, when I asked him he said "Sorry this is not with us but another provider. Have a nice day." No bus dropped by from 10:05 to 10:40 so I called the customer service. The aggressive agent assumed I just got in the bus stop at 10:30, his responses were really horrible. I have been doing my itinerary for several YEARS around the world and it is just so weird the paper says pick-up at 10:30 and this disrespectful guy is saying I must be at the bus stop 10:00. Even the team leader, Stephen seemed not to care much about my complaint. He said next bus at 11:00, reached 11:05, grumpy driver. Guys you should listen to constructive criticism from your customers, respect them at least - time will come it will all backfire at you and these people will choose other providers. Anyways I have provided my suggestions for better service and operational effectiveness over the phone (using my minutes), so you're welcome. I arrived at the airport, running to the check-in counter, slipped and scratched my knee (sure, my fault), almost missed my flight. Do not let this happen to you. Time in Iceland must be fun, positive experience. Do yourself a favour - make sure to book with another provider.

Cool Cruiser

Sailing “Iceland’s Natural Beauty” this July. Can anyone with knowledge of Viking’s excursions comment on their excursions in Isafjordur, Seydisfjordur, Djupivogur, Heimaey? Thanks!

We are on that cruise in July also.  I thought I read that we cross the arctic circle on the cruise. Does anyone know this and is there any ceremony ?

Peregrina651

IMHO. Plenty of birds and the awesome beauty of the rugged landscape.

Isafjordur: Vigur Island

Seydisfjordur: Skalanes Nature Center

Djupivogur: Fjallaron Glacier boat ride

Heimaey: don't do a boat trip in the rain

Akureyri: either of the full day tours that cover a selection of natural wonders

Sailing in and out of Akureyri, you cross the Arctic Circle.  You will receive a certificate in your cabin.  However, no seadays on this itinerary hence no ceremony.

Everyone who came back from Vigur Island on Isafjordur seemed very excited by it, so I add to the recommendation. There is a strict limit on the number of visitors, so book it as fast as you can.

I used arcticshorex.com in Seydisfjordur to book an excursion driving to the fjord lake above the town, which I enjoyed. Also there's a hot springs spa that people enjoyed.

In Djupivogur, if you enjoy light hiking, you can walk straight from the port to some very beautiful trails east and south. The ground is a little uneven but mostly flat and never super steep. But really pretty. You can find a trail map online. But if you don't want to hike then the glacier boat ride was popular, but be prepared because it's a decent long drive.

Just noted on our upcoming trip Vigur is not included as a possibility. That was the excursion I was most excited about (I had been there many years ago and remember it vividly. 😢

We enjoyed the Golden Circle when in Reykjavik.  Isafjordur we did the hike up the several levels of a waterfall although Vigor Island was most popular.  Akurerei we loved Northern Treasures.  Isafjordur we did the trip to hot spring baths at the edge of a huge lake in the morning.  Can't remember the facilities name but it was amazing.  In the PM we did Skalanes Nature Center and then walked the town on our own.  Djupivogur we loved the zodiac iceberg trip and the scenery to/from was gorgeous.  Missed Heimey as too choppy to tender.

Don't miss Vigur Island! The lady who lives there (Felicity Aston) gave us the tour. She's the first woman to ski solo across Antarctica. She wrote a book about it. Do the walking tour in Seydisfjordour so you can see the blue church with the rainbow road. If you are lucky enough to be able to stop in  Heimaey (the ship before us and after us didn't due to bad weather), take the RIB boat ride. Fantastic! Best excursion of the whole trip! Also, when you cross the Artic Circle, you have to request a certificate from guest services. There is no fanfare and they don't automatically hand them out.

Maybe there's a reason it's not available, but they do have public bookings for when Viking doesn't buy them out. Might be worth checking. Maybe you have another ship in port that stole all the day's excursions.

We were on the last sailing of the Iconic Greenland, Iceland, and Canada in 2023. It was too late in the season for any excursions with the puffins (e.g. Vigur Island). This cruise hits the same ports as Iceland's Beauty. We did the following:

Akureryi - Lake Myvatn with Imagine Iceland (less expensive and smaller group than Viking's similar)

ĺsafjördur - Dynjandi Waterfall with Arctic Shore Ex (ditto price and and group-size)

Seydisfjördur - booked Skalanes Nature Center with Viking, but had a snow day - no one could get through the pass. We enjoyed our cold walk around the cute little town though.

Djúpivogur - FJALLSÁRLÓN ICE LAGOON BY ZODIAC with Viking - it is a long bus ride, but beautiful scenery and amazing experience. Highly recommend.

Heimaey - Heimaey on Foot (Viking included tour) - we had an excellent guide. It was one of our favorite tours of the entire trip.

I blogged about our trip at: http://notesbynancy.com

Whatever you chose - the scenery in all of Iceland is amazing! Enjoy the planning and the journey!

No Reykjavik excursions because that is the changeover port for the B2B you are actually on. My understanding is that Viking will provide some options for those continuing to NYC during the cruise for Reykjavik. You might check the rolls calls from last year for timing. If I were you, I’d book a third party small tour Golden Circle or South Coast tour depending on time in port and not wait on Viking to book. We did the NYC to Reykjavik leg last year and stayed extra days in Reykjavik after disembarking.

https://www.vikingcruises.com/oceans/cruise-destinations/multi-region/greenland-iceland-norway-and-beyond/index.html#itineraryday/14 I see Vigur Island on day 14 on the Viking website for this cruise. Are your excursions already posted in MVJ? I’d contact [email protected] as well as the Vigur folks at West Tours [email protected]

Although I note on the West Tours booking site they are not running tours for the day you’ll be there. Find out why! Good luck—it was a great excursion. We took it last July on the Bergen to Reykjavik cruise.

Just looked at that website for Vigur (as we are going this summer also) and they only run the excursion from 1 to 4. Since the ship leaves the port at 5, is it possible to take this private option? Does anyone know if their dock is located close to where a cruise ship would dock?

dburns was the rib boat ride at Heimaey really pounding or is the boat large enough where it is not too bad?

Where we were docked this past summer the Vigur boat was a short walk from the Saturn.

My husband would be nuts. Only 30 minutes leeway for the what-ifs???

Back-on-board time is 4:30 and the walk was 10 minutes at my pace. You now have 20 minutes leeway for what-ifs -- breakdowns, stragglers, bad weather. How many times have you been held up on a bus tour because of some straggler?

A lot to consider.

ReaderGirl57

We did the Vigur Island tour in Isafjordur and the Skalanes Nature Center in Seydisfjordur - both were excellent especially if you want to see puffins in the wild.  The boat for Vigur is right near where the ship docks. In Akureryi, we did a small group tour (maybe 12 people?) with Saga Travel. We saw the Godafoss waterfall, Lake Mývatn, lava fields, geothermal pools, and the rift between the Eurasian and American continents. Our guide was an Icelandic actor who has appeared in Trapped on Netflix and the sights were amazing. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks

RIB is a Rigid Inflatable Boat. It was fantastic! Bumpy and wild! You were secure in your seat and they provide you all the clothing and gear to keep you warm and dry but they do bounce over the waves. Loud music to go with the ride. The absolute best excursion ever! We were 66 and 69 respectively and loved it! But we are also active sports people and we do adventurous excursions so nothing bothers us.

Is "bouncing over the waves" as high-risk-for-nausea as it sounds?

Haha

Not in my opinion. But I don't suffer from motion sickness either. If in doubt, skip it.

We did a private excursion on an ATV. In Isafjordur when we went.  The first time we did Viking’s excursion, and the guide was excellent.  He took us to the top of the mountain, where there was supposed to be a spectacular view (or there was when he went up 2 hours earlier).  In May, we hit rain, slept and snow on the way to the top, and it was totally socked in with fog.

The private excursion, he took us waaay off the beaten track.  Our 4 hour excursion was twice the time and half the cost, same guide.  We had utterly spectacular weather.

I thought I read that we cross the arctic circle on the cruise. Does anyone know this and is there any ceremony ?

You probably do/might cross the circle at this point (orange)

image.thumb.png.abcb48401b2f851d26d0de3185fd7ce8.png

all of Iceland is south of the circle but at this point it is less than a mile so it depends on how they 'cut the corner'.

We've twice crossed the circle on VO cruises (last time went Bergen to Longyearbyen ... that's WAY further north) ... passing this marker

IMG_1013.thumb.JPG.22dae17c17ae7e7fb5f9e8c0ca07300a.JPG

on these cruises they did a Bluenose ceremony where you dip into COLD water and are rewarded with some blue frosting on the nose and some Aquavit to warm up and a certificate ... the ceremony is 'voluntary' ... they fill a hot tup with cold water and a LOT of ice .... and replenish the ice as 'needed' . here's Mrs taking her dip .... having patrolled the Bering Sea for a while in my USCG time ... already a member ..

editorial comments:

1) each time the ceremony was on a sea day after the crossing .... it consumed several hours

2) I've know people to cross the circle on other lines and nothing was done in recognition . . .

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.
