A Guide to Planning a Tesla Road Trip

' src=

Prior to taking delivery of my Model S I was the guy who suffered from incessant thoughts of  range anxiety , which soon disappeared as I grew into my ownership experience. I charge daily to 90% in my 85 kWh Model S and drive about 100 miles a day commuting, running errands, etc. I return home with about 140 miles of range left every day which is enough to do it all again without charging. There have been a few longer round trips where I did about 180 miles round trip , and one intentional (but not required) visit to a Supercharger , but none of my trips have required charging en-route or at the destination. As the end of summer approaches I intend on taking two Tesla road trips – one to New Jersey, about an hour east of NYC, and another road trip taking me one hour northeast of Pittsburgh. The New Jersey trip will be taking place this week hence it’s the subject this post. The Tesla road trip to PA will be the subject for of a future post.

Tesla Road Trip Planning

Assuming I leave with a 90% state of charge, I’ll need to charge after depleting 160-190 rated miles just so I can maintain a comfortable buffer. Experienced Tesla road trip veterans are probably much better at estimating the amount of buffer needed based on time of year and weather conditions.

  • Tesla Road Trip Battery Range Planning
  • Reasons to Have a Tesla Tire Repair Kit and 2nd UMC

The next thing I researched are the number of Supercharger locations along my route. There are a many ways of doing this, so I’ll just mention two:

  • Google maps – Enter your start and end addresses and then type “Supercharger” and have Google find Superchargers on the map along your route. Pick a good one (or more if needed) as waypoints.
  • EVTripPlanner.com – This is a useful EV trip planning site put together by an enterprising 16 year old. Enter your start and destination addresses, select the type of car you’ll be using, and click the “Route through Superchargers” button. This will guide you to your destination through routes that have access to Tesla Superchargers. It’s not perfect and it can add more pit stops than needed so be sure to validate the results and adjust accordingly.

I used EVTripPlanner and found that while it wanted me to stop at both the Milford and Darien, Connecticut Superchargers, I technically would still have plenty of range and be able to skip Milford. From my home to the Darien Supercharger it’s 147 miles but EVTripPlanner estimates 161 rated miles needed. Considering we’re charged to 90% (240 miles), we’ll have plenty of buffer to fulfill the 1st leg at 147 miles.

How Much Charge Do I Need?

The rate of charge in an EV taper offs quickly as it approaches a 100% state of charge. This may add a significant amount of time to your charge. Also EVs charge faster from near empty than they do from half full. When you look at charge times and rates on Tesla’s site, those are generally based on ideal conditions assuming you’re using the latest Supercharger technology and you’re not splitting the charge with someone else that’s in the same Supercharger bank.

ALSO SEE: Top 5 Lessons Learned from a First Tesla Road Trip

In summary, I start with 240 rated miles on a 90% charge. I drive to the Darien Supercharger and use 161 rated miles. I have 79 miles of rated range left. Not enough to get me to my destination hence the reason for my stop. EVTripPlanner estimates 93 miles needed with no safety factor. Safety factors are generally added to standard (not rated) mileage. I need to add some safety factor so lets take the 2/3 approach. 93 x 3/2 = 140 miles of rated range needed to arrive at my destination. So I need to add 61 miles of rated range at the Supercharger to get to my destination and still have a good safety margin.

Tesla claims 170 miles of rated range added in 30 minutes, but as we’ve mentioned above they might be overly optimistic with this. Even so, planning for a 30 minute stop is very reasonable.

Destination Charging

I’ll definitely poke around when I get there to see if I can find a better charging station / wall outlet, but nevertheless I need to plan for the worst. If I charge the minimum at the Supercharger to get to 140 miles of rated range, drive and use the estimated 102 miles of rated range i’ll arrive at my destination with 38 miles of rated range left. On the way home I need to go back the same route and I need that 140 miles of rated range for the distance plus safety. Oops — I can’t get home.

So I need to add 102 miles of rated range while i’m there. More if I plan on doing things with my car while I’m there like showing it off with test drives, going to dinner, etc. Lets say I need 50 miles to use while I’m there, plus the 140 to get back to the Supercharger. I need to add 152 miles of rated range. At a charge rate of 3 miles/hour, it’ll take approximately 51 hours of charging to regain 153 miles of rated range.

  • Find a Supercharger near my destination – NJ only has one and its more than an hour away. No good.
  • Find a faster charger nearby – A local college has a J1772 reported at 30A/240V which would give 18miles rated/hour added. But I’d have to leave my car there or sit there for the charge. Better, but not great.
  • Charge more at my Supercharger stop on the way down and arrive with more left.

Charging up more at the Supercharger seems like it would be the best option. I’ll charge back up to 90% (240 rated miles), use 102 rated miles to get to my NJ destination and have 138 rated miles left. If I don’t go anywhere while there, that leaves me with plenty  of charge to get back along with a safety margin. If I want to drive around while I’m there, I figured an additional 50 miles of charge will suffice which equates to 16 hours of charging (from a wall outlet) or two overnights. That’s doable.

Planning Complete

The return trip home should be pretty uneventful assuming I did all of my Tesla road trip planning correctly. One last thing to consider is detours along the way. On our way down to NJ we pass by a favorite Sushi place we like to visit in CT. The restaurant is a bit off  route and will add a couple miles so I planned for this as well.

I also considered the unlikely scenario where the Darien, CT supercharger was offline when I arrived. What would I do? Fortunately there’s another one on the Northbound side of I-95 and then another only a few miles away on the Merritt parkway. Unlike MA and NJ, CT is pretty blessed with Superchargers!

This will be my first real EV road trip. Relative to the the epic 12,000 mile Tesla road trip  taken by the Recargo folks, and many others that are happening daily, mine will be tiny but just as fun. As a new owner that still occasionally struggles with  range anxiety , it has been an eye-opening experience having to think about options and and fall back plans – things I never once thought about in an ICE car. A Tesla road trip takes a little more planning. Thanks to the growing Supercharger network “filling up” my Tesla along the way is a minor inconvenience. Oh, and did I mention that using the Tesla Supercharger is free for life?

How Well Does an Tesla Model 3 Work For a Long Trip?

After a 1046-mile journey in Tesla's smallest sedan we have the answer.

2019 tesla model 3

  • The 523 miles each way takes about eight hours in a gasoline-powered vehicle. The Tesla required three recharge stops, adding nearly three hours to the trip.
  • Tesla's Supercharger stations are located along major Interstates at convenient intervals, and the car's navigation system directs you to the nearest one as the battery runs low.

Few things will make your heart sink deep into your stomach quite like missing an exit to a Tesla Supercharger with only six percent of battery life remaining. I'll admit, I zoned out for a quick second while listening to Black Dog by Led Zeppelin . The next second, our Model 3 long-term test car's navigation system rerouted me four miles ahead to the nearest interchange so I could turn around. In that moment, I heard myself repeating "oh God, no" while hoping I was going to make it back to the Supercharger.

Filling station, Vehicle, Car, Transport, Gas pump, Telephone booth, Mode of transport, Tesla, Tesla model s, Gasoline,

With less than about 60 miles of range remaining, a Model 3's battery icon turns from green to yellow and, soon after that, to red. The colors make you doubt and reevaluate, constantly double-checking the distance to the suggested Supercharger on Google Maps even though the navigation system does that for you. But is the technology really trustworthy? It turned out that it was. After missing the exit, I reached the Supercharger with just three percent of the battery charge remaining.

Uh-oh.

I was in the process of heading back to Ann Arbor, Michigan after two weeks at home with my family in St. Louis. The 523-mile one-way drive is a familiar one for me, and it usually takes eight hours and requires just one stop for food and fuel when driving most other gasoline-powered vehicles. But the Model 3 required three stops along the way to charge its 80.5-kWh lithium-ion battery and took almost eleven hours.

Vehicle, Car, Technology, City car, Steering wheel, Family car,

Thanks to Tesla's vast Supercharger network , planning for a road trip in one of the company's vehicles isn't as challenging or as critical as it was in 2014 when we drove down to Virginia International Raceway in our long-term 2015 Tesla Model S P85D . Tesla's supercharger network now consists of about 1870 stations worldwide—908 in the U.S.— found mostly off of major highways at grocery stores, malls, gas stations, and sometimes in apartment-complex parking structures. They either supply 250 kW or 150 kW; there are also chargers in urban locations that have 72 kW of electrical power. With chargers spread out strategically across the most-travelled routes there's no need to worry about making it to a station.

Plugging in at a Supercharger is easy: Just open the car's charge port via the dashboard-mounted 15-inch touchscreen, hop out, grab the charging cable off the charger and plug in. For the Model 3, the cost is usually about $0.26 per kilowatt-hour, which is charged directly to your Tesla account. On our three-stop trip, each charging session ranged from around $7 to $13 and took, on average, about 50 minutes. Good thing Netflix and Hulu are integrated into the Model 3's central touch screen .

While charging might lengthen a long trip by several hours, driving a Model 3 on a multi-state jaunt is relaxed and effortless. Our Model 3 is equipped with Tesla's autopilot feature, which enables the car to accelerate, steer, brake, and cruise semi-autonomously within its lane; it can change lanes automatically, too. This, along with the Model 3's easy-to-use cruise control and comfortable, quiet ride made for a relaxed long-range trip.

We can't speak to the time and effort that would be required to make this same trip in a non-Tesla electric vehicle using one of the other, less widespread public charging networks from companies like EvGo or Electrify America. But our Tesla trek does prove that cross-country journeys in electric vehicles are on the brink of becoming not only feasible but also low-stress affairs. That is, as long as you don't miss the exit to a Supercharger station.

Tesla Superchargers are incredibly fast electric vehicle (EV) chargers to help you quickly charge away from home, including on road trips. Specifically, a Tesla Supercharger is a Level 3 charger (the fastest available today) that adds up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Currently, Tesla Superchargers are available only for Teslas in most locations – however, Tesla is piloting sites where other EVs can quickly charge using a Tesla Supercharger for an added fee. In this article, we break down everything you need to know about Tesla Superchargers, including what they are, where to find them, how to use them, and how much it costs to use one.

Key takeaways

What to know about Tesla and Superchargers

While EV options continue to increase, Tesla is still the market leader, with 70.1 percent of the U.S. EV market share, according to a Kelley Blue Book report from July 2022. Today, most EVs in the U.S. use a standard J1772 plug or charge port for charging, but Teslas use a unique Tesla-only plug. So, only Teslas can take advantage of most Superchargers, though Tesla is expanding Superchargers in some areas to make them available to other non-Tesla EVs (which we discuss in more detail below).

The Tesla Supercharger network is an industry leader in EV charging infrastructure: there are over 35,000 Superchargers around the world. They're often conveniently located off major highways, so you can easily access them during long-distance driving with nearby amenities like restaurants and shops.

The Tesla Supercharger network

Two common concerns with taking an EV on road trips include having an adequate range to drive and ensuring accessible charging stations are available. Tesla Superchargers make it easy to quickly charge on long drives so you can get to charging stations easily and add range. Often, in just 15 to 20 minutes, you can add enough charge to continue on your drive. Even with longer road trips requiring a maximum charge, you likely won't spend more than 30 to 40 minutes charging.

The chargers in the Supercharger network are all Level 3 direct current (DC) chargers, the fastest EV charging currently available. All EV batteries, including Teslas, store energy as DC energy. With Level 1 or Level 2 charging, the power source or EV charger charge is alternating current (AC) energy. So, to be usable, an EV's onboard charger must convert AC energy to DC energy. The conversion process and the fact that AC charging happens at a lower output means that DC charging is much faster than AC charging.

As a quick comparison, Level 1 chargers are standard outlets that will charge approximately two to five miles per hour, while Level 2 chargers usually add between 10 to 50 miles per hour. Learn more about the different EV charging levels in this article .

In addition to the Tesla Supercharger network, some other networks and ways to charge your Tesla include:

Tesla destination chargers : public Level 2 chargers to help you charge when stopped for a while or overnight

Tesla Wall Connector : charge your Tesla at home with this Level 2 home EV charger

How charging works with Tesla Superchargers

Tesla Superchargers are extremely easy to use: you simply plug in your Tesla at any Supercharger stall (also known as the actual charger) to begin charging. While Superchargers are all Level 3 chargers, your exact charging speed will vary depending on a few factors, including the Tesla model, the energy output at the Supercharger location, if there's extreme weather if other EVs are charging at the same time, and how full or empty your EV battery is when you're charging.

Tesla Supercharging speed by model

Each Tesla model and type charges at a different speed because they have different battery sizes. The larger the battery, the longer it will take you to charge it. Here's a general guide on how many miles you'll add with 15 minutes of charging at a Tesla Supercharger, depending on the model:

Maximum miles added with Tesla Superchargers

Source: Tesla

Supercharging speed by Supercharger location

Some Tesla Superchargers charge faster than others because the electrical output at each location is slightly different. You can see the fastest nearby Supercharger on your Tesla screen or app based on the number of bolts shown – three bolts indicates the fastest. You'll also see the maximum kilowatt-hour (kWh) listed for each Supercharger on the screen and in the app.

Additionally, if there is extreme cold or heat, you may experience slower charging because your Tesla battery uses more energy to heat or cool the interior. Batteries also lose range more quickly with extreme weather.

Does an empty battery charge faster at a Supercharger?

Yes, the lower the charge on your battery, the faster it will Supercharge. Alternatively, the closer your Tesla's battery is to a full charge, the slower it will charge. Think of it like pouring water into a cup from a pitcher: if your cup is empty, you can pour it more quickly. But, as the cup fills with water, you have to pour more slowly so you don't cause it to overflow or spill.

A battery charging using DC energy works similarly: as you reach the battery's capacity, the Supercharger must slow down. So, charging from 10 percent to 50 percent capacity will be much faster than when charging from 80 percent to a full battery. Tesla's in-vehicle 'Supercharging Tips' indicates that a battery with 20 percent or less charge will charge at the maximum charge rate.

Are Tesla Superchargers slower when other Teslas are already charging?

Sometimes, yes. Typically, when Superchargers charge at less than 150 kilowatts (kW), they share power supplies between certain stalls – the same numbers share power between their A and B stalls. So, if you pull up to charge at Stall 1A and another Tesla is already charging at 1B, your battery will charge slower than if you were the only car charging.

Preconditioning your Tesla battery for supercharging

Preconditioning is preparing your Tesla's battery to charge by helping it be at the optimal temperature for the most efficient DC charging. You can precondition your battery for Supercharging to help it charge faster – if you use your Tesla navigation to navigate to a Supercharger, your Tesla will automatically do this 10 to 20 minutes before you reach it. You can also precondition the battery in the Tesla app.

How to find Tesla Superchargers near you

While many EV charging networks are being added and expanding around the US and globally, Tesla provides one of the most accessible options for finding and charging while away from home. There are a few ways to find or locate Tesla Superchargers, including on your Tesla's main screen, the Tesla app, and Tesla's website.

Your Tesla's main screen

When driving your Tesla Model 3, S, X, or Y, you can quickly see nearby Superchargers on your Tesla's main screen (also known as the Tesla media control unit or MCU). You'll find the following information included on the screen:

Supercharger location: You can see and navigate to it with your Tesla navigation system.

Supercharger speed: You'll see one, two, or three bolts to indicate the speed of this specific Supercharger station (with three bolts being the fastest). You'll also see the speed in kW.

Supercharger stalls: the Supercharger stalls are the number of individual chargers at that location; you'll see the total number there and the number currently available or open to use.

Fees: Supercharger pricing is available so you know the cost per kWh you'll pay at that location to charge or idle; we'll cover more about pricing below.

Nearby amenities: You'll see icons showcasing if there are restrooms, restaurants, coffee, or other retail shops near the Supercharger. Remember that some of these may only be open during certain hours, depending on the business.

Nearby Supercharger on a Tesla Model 3 main screen

Sometimes, Superchargers may be in parking decks or shopping malls, so it might not be immediately clear exactly where they are located at a specific location on the map. If that's the case, your Tesla navigation will route you to the nearest entrance, and you can zoom in on the map to find the exact location of the Supercharger station. The Supercharger station's red pin on the map shows additional information such as the parking level location, any access code needed, or peak hours.

Tesla's navigation system

Enter a destination into your Tesla navigation system, and it'll automatically show you any necessary charging stops and the specific Supercharger location to make it to your destination. You'll also see the estimated percentage of charge at your time of arrival at each charger and the estimated amount of charge time to make it to the next stop. While Tesla is constantly refining the estimates, it's essential to note that these aren't exact: several factors may cause your distance to vary, including how fast you're driving and changes in acceleration, traffic, and elevation.

The Tesla app

Like your Tesla's main screen, the Tesla app shows nearby chargers, the distance to them, Supercharging fees, and charging stalls available.

Tesla's website

You can enter an address, city, or zip code into the map on Tesla's website to find a Supercharger closest to you or any location. The same map lets you find Tesla Destination chargers, service centers, collision centers, and stores as well.

Planning Tesla Supercharging on road trip routes

Tesla's online trip planner lets you plan a route ahead of time based on your Tesla model. You'll input your model and type (e.g., Performance or Long Range), and it'll show you the estimated Supercharger locations and time needed to charge to make it to your destination. It also calculates estimated savings when driving your Tesla compared to buying gas for the same trip.

How much does Tesla Supercharging cost?

Typically, it will cost you money to use Tesla Superchargers – the amount is determined based on a few factors, including the Supercharger's charging speed , the time of day , and if you're idling . Tesla will bill you for these fees through your Tesla account to your primary card on file. You can also see the cost of your current charging session and a summary of costs for your last charging session in the 'charging' section on your Tesla screen.

Supercharger station charging speed

In most cases, your cost to Supercharge depends on the kW of charge available at that location, so you're paying more for a faster charge. This is also known as energy-based billing. In some areas like Canada , you may pay according to time-based billing to Supercharge. Most Tesla drivers prefer energy-based billing because the alternative to time-based billing means you pay to charge for a set amount of time regardless of the charge added to your battery.

Tesla lays out different pricing tiers for their Supercharger stations based on the charging level, with prices lowest at Tier 1 and increasing up to Tier 4:

Tesla Supercharger pricing tiers

Time of day.

In most cases, you'll pay more to Supercharge at peak times of the day. Like charging your Tesla or EV at home, you can often get cheaper rates when using electricity at off-peak times. At home, you may be able to get time-of-use (TOU) rates , depending on your utility company and location. Most of the cost difference depends on daytime versus overnight charging, so you'll usually pay less to charge from 9 p.m. to 11 a.m.

The Tesla Supercharger network has idle fees to discourage leaving your EV plugged in after fully charging it. (Keep in mind that it's common EV driver courtesy to move your EV after you finish charging so others can use the charger if needed.) Idle fees may run up to $1.00 per minute. However, if you move your Tesla within five minutes of reaching a full charge, Tesla will waive the idle fee.

Tesla Supercharging cost example

To give you an idea how of these factors come together, one 2022 Supercharging session at a Tier 4 Supercharger (charging at 276 miles per hour) showed pricing as:

$0.24/kWh from 9 pm to 11 am

$0.48/kWh from 11 am to 9 pm

So, a Supercharging session at 10:30 am in which you consume 13 kWh (resulting in an approximately 60 percent charge from an almost empty Tesla Model 3) costs $3.12. However, just 30 minutes later, the cost would've doubled to $6.24. Regardless of this difference, it's still much cheaper to charge your Tesla at a Supercharger than it is to fill up the tank of a gas-powered vehicle.

Is there free Supercharging?

If you have a Model S or Model X you purchased in 2017 or earlier, you may be grandfathered in to get free Supercharging. Also, in the past, Tesla offered credits for free Supercharging when referring another Tesla EV buyer. However, that referral program ended in September 2021, so those credits likely have expired.

Supercharging for non-Tesla EVs

Historically, Superchargers were only available for Teslas. However, in November 2021, Tesla announced a pilot program in certain European countries, opening Superchargers up to other non-Tesla EVs. The pricing structure is such that non-Tesla EVs pay a higher rate to charge than Teslas. Additionally, there's an option of purchasing a charging membership to lower the per kWh price to charge. Non-Tesla EV owners download the Tesla app and use it to manage charging and pay fees, just as Tesla owners do.

In June 2022, as part of other EV infrastructure expansion announcements, the White House confirmed that Tesla will begin production in late 2022 of new Supercharger equipment that will enable non-Tesla EV drivers in North America to use Tesla Superchargers.

How to plan a road trip while driving a tesla.

Avoid any unpleasant surprises by planning your road trip with a Tesla

EVs (electric vehicles) have changed the automobile landscape. While some new players and traditional car-makers are in the EV space, you can't deny Tesla's role in starting the trend. With several Tesla models' long-driving range and the company's ever-growing Supercharger network in North America, it's easier than ever for Tesla owners to plan an adventurous road trip.

While a Tesla delivers zero emissions, low costs, and better performance, mile range is one of the worrying factors before a long road trip. Although the number of EV stations has increased due to Tesla's Supercharge network and Electrify America initiatives, they aren't a match compared to gas stations, and it can be difficult to spot one in specific areas. That's why it's essential to plan in advance before you go on the road with your Tesla Model S, 3, X, or Y.

Why do you plan a road trip in advance for your Tesla?

Range anxiety is the biggest reason for advanced road trip planning with any EV. Factor in the availability of charging stations, charging time, and compatibility with your Tesla on your long route. After all, you don't want to get stuck somewhere where you don't have friends and family. You should also maintain an extra buffer as unforeseen road closures may force you to take a long route to reach the destination.

You can use Tesla's Go Anywhere tool, glance over the Supercharger network, check your tires, note terrains, track temperatures, and keep other accessories like the top car chargers ready for a smooth journey.

Understand your Tesla's range

Before discussing suggestions for planning a road trip with a Tesla, it's essential to understand how your EV's range is calculated and how it translates in real life. Your Tesla vehicle's claimed range is based on EPA standards. While it's relatively accurate, it misses out on factors like temperatures, driving speeds, road conditions, tire pressure, and more that may affect your Tesla's range.

Freezing temperatures affect your Tesla's range. It may reduce your EV's range by 20% to 30%. An active car heater further impacts the claimed range.

Plan your Tesla road trip online

Tesla's Go Anywhere is an excellent travel-planning tool to get started. The tool is available on Tesla's large screen and on the web. You can select your Tesla model, glance over the claimed range, enter a location and destination, choose stops, and check the route information (powered by Google Maps) with Superchargers.

Tesla goes a step ahead and shows a maximum charge rate with an estimated charging time at each Supercharger stop. You can plan your stopovers at shopping centers and nearby attractions based on available data.

If a Supercharge isn't available in a region, Go Anywhere lists slow charges on your destination route. Apart from Tesla's built-in tool, you can use third-party apps like A Better Routeplanner that offer more details like weather information, real-time navigation, the ability to manage multiple trips, and more.

Pick your charging stations wisely

Apart from using Go Anywhere and other third-party tools, pick your charging stations smartly. Instead of choosing a charging station in a deserted area, stop at a station with nearby attractions to make your journey memorable. You can easily squeeze in two or three activities.

You should also consider booking accommodations where an EV charging facility is available. Even a slow charger is fine, as you will be juicing up your Tesla overnight.

Check your Tires and consider aero wheels

Incorrect type pressure can affect your Tesla's mileage range by 3% to 4%. Find the Tire and Loading Information label on the center door pillar and maintain a recommended tire pressure. You should also closely inspect the tires for cuts, wear, and bulges. If you find something unusual with them, schedule a service appointment using your Tesla app.

If you have the budget, consider installing aero wheels to improve efficiency and range during long-distance travel.

Activate regenerative breaking

All Tesla models come with regenerative braking to convert kinetic energy into electricity. When you take your foot off the accelerator, regenerative braking creates on-the-go energy, allowing you to go the extra mile. Tesla recommends setting regenerative breaking to standard.

Don't forget charging accessories

You should also pack essential accessories like a Tesla charging cable, portable charging connector, and adapters for several charging networks. You can charge at different charging networks without worrying about compatibility issues.

Have a memorable road trip

Planning a long road trip with a Tesla doesn't require rocket science. Keep a realistic range, pin down Superchargers, and pick your stays strategically to avoid surprises. If you plan to pass through several dead zones with glitchy network connectivity, download Google Maps offline to avoid getting lost in the wrong direction.

Article QuickTakes:

  • Plan your Tesla road trip online before departing
  • Where can I travel long distances in my Tesla?
  • Other considerations when planning a Tesla road trip

With the combination of electric vehicles with longer driving ranges and an ever-expanding, fast-charging Supercharger network across North America, Tesla owners can increasingly take the kinds of adventurous, spur-of-the-moment road trips more common to gasoline-powered automobiles.

That's a big win for EV owners, but Tesla drivers still must do a bit of planning before hitting the open road for a long distance, especially in areas where a Supercharger isn't available. Here are some tips to make your next Tesla road trip preparations easier.

Plan Your Tesla Road Trip Online Before Departing

Tesla's built-in Go Anywhere travel-planning tool can be accessed via Tesla's large touchscreen in the vehicle, on your phone, or on a home computer. Select your Tesla model and configuration, then add your trip's origin and destination, and you'll be provided with Google Maps routing information that shows Superchargers along the way.

You'll even get data on the suggested charge time at each Supercharger stop along the route to plan how much time you'll need to recharge your Tesla. In areas without Superchargers, you'll get details about the 40,000 slower-charging destination chargers you can use to recharge overnight — or during a longer stopover stretch — at hotels, shopping centers, or other businesses.

Tesla drivers can also use third-party apps. Replug, an Apple iPad-oriented Tesla route planner, indicates a Supercharger's status. A Better Routeplanner also offers customization details such as weather information, real-time navigation, and the ability to plan multiple trips simultaneously.

Where Can I Travel Long Distances in My Tesla?

Tesla owners can find the biggest concentration of Supercharger stations along interstate highways and in major metropolitan areas in California and along the U.S. East Coast — especially in the corridor between Washington, D.C. and Boston.

Additionally, Tesla's North American Supercharger Network now stretches north as far as Prince George, B.C., Canada — about 10 hours north of Vancouver — and as far south as Acapulco, Mexico. There are fewer Superchargers in some central and western U.S. regions such as rural Kansas, the Dakotas, northern Nevada, and much of Montana and Idaho, so you may need to factor in longer stops for full charges at slower-charging, third-party outlets.

Other Considerations When Planning a Tesla Road Trip

Weather can significantly impact range, especially freezing temperatures , which can knock down the total range of any EV by as much as 20% to 30% or more. In Consumer Reports testing, a Tesla Model Y 's 326-mile range was reduced to 186 miles in frigid weather. You'll also drain power by using the car's heater to stay toasty, which may alter your road-trip plans.

In the summer, parking the car in a shaded area and turning on the air conditioning to keep the car cool during a charging session can help maximize your comfort. You can also adjust a Tesla's regenerative braking system to help create more on-the-go energy when you take your foot off the accelerator. And whether it's an EV or a gas-powered vehicle, it's always a good idea to ensure the tires are correctly inflated before a long road trip, as low tire pressures can reduce overall driving range.

Tesla Supercharger Map: How to find a Tesla Supercharger

Here's how to find your nearest Tesla Supercharger

Tesla Supercharger

The Tesla Supercharger network is one of the biggest benefits of owning a Tesla. Not only does Tesla have thousands of Superchargers across the world, each location also offers consistently high charging speeds. And, while exclusive for the time being, Tesla has already taken steps to allow non-Tesla cars to use the network .

But, if there are so many Supercharger locations, how are you supposed to find them? Thankfully there are various Supercharger maps out there to point you in the right direction, including official ones hosted by Tesla, which are kept up to date with  new and upcoming Supercharger locations.

Here’s how to find a Tesla Supercharger, using the Tesla Supercharger map

How to use Tesla Supercharger Map in a Tesla

The easiest way to find the nearest Tesla charger is to use the on-board navigation system. Every Tesla comes with a Supercharger Map pre-installed, letting you find the most convenient charger when you can actually do something about it.

10 Tips for Your Long-Distance Tesla Road Trip

Updated: June 29, 2023

Published: May 26, 2023

road trip tesla supercharger

Taking a road trip in a Tesla is an exciting adventure, but it can also present some unique challenges, especially for first-time Tesla owners. However, with a little preparation and knowledge, you can ensure that your Tesla road trip is as enjoyable and hassle-free as any other. In this blog post, brought to you by Steer EV, we’ll provide you with 10 smart tips to enhance your long-distance Tesla road trip experience. Let’s dive in!

1. Choose your charging stations wisely

To optimize your road trip, plan your charging stops strategically. Utilize apps like the Tesla in-built route planner or other alternatives to map out the Supercharger locations along your route. Consider selecting charging stops with exciting detours or near attractions, making your journey more enjoyable. Additionally, booking accommodations with charging facilities overnight allows you to wake up fully charged and ready to hit the road.

2. Inspect your tires before the trip

Before embarking on your journey, ensure your tires are in good condition. Check for cuts, foreign objects, or bulges by referring to the Tire and Loading Information label located on the center door pillar. If you notice any issues, schedule a service appointment via the Tesla app. Confirming the correct tire pressure and size will optimize performance and safety.

3. Consider installing aero wheels

For improved efficiency and range, consider installing aero wheels specifically designed for long-distance travel. These wheels can increase your mileage by approximately 3 to 4%, allowing you to go the extra mile on your road trip.

4. Mitigate range anxiety

Range anxiety, the concern of running out of battery charge, can dampen your road trip experience. Be aware of factors that affect battery drain, such as uphill drives, weather conditions, and driving speed. Research the terrain and plan accordingly. Utilize navigation tools to identify charging stations along your route, ensuring you have adequate opportunities to recharge.

5. Maintain an extra buffer

Always leave room for unexpected situations by setting your charge limit to 100%. Road closures or unforeseen detours may force you to take longer routes, potentially affecting your original charging plan. Having an extra buffer of range ensures peace of mind and helps alleviate range anxiety.

6. Optimize regenerative braking

Tesla vehicles are equipped with regenerative braking, which converts kinetic energy into electricity, extending your range. Take advantage of this feature by adjusting the regenerative braking settings to your preference. Familiarize yourself with the different levels of regenerative braking and experiment to find the most efficient option for your driving style.

7. Pack essential charging accessories

Before hitting the road, pack essential charging accessories such as a Tesla charging cable, adapters for various charging networks, and a portable charging connector. Having these items readily available will allow you to charge at different types of charging stations and ensure a smooth charging experience.

8. Plan for entertainment and comfort

Long road trips require entertainment and comfort. Utilize Tesla’s built-in entertainment features, such as streaming music and videos, playing games, or accessing navigation for interesting landmarks along your route. Additionally, bring snacks, water, and necessary amenities to keep everyone comfortable throughout the journey.

9. Utilize destination charging

In addition to Superchargers, Tesla offers destination charging at various hotels, resorts, and attractions. Plan your stops at locations that provide destination charging options, allowing you to recharge while enjoying your destination. Research and book accommodations that offer these facilities in advance to ensure availability.

10. Join the Tesla community

Tap into the knowledge and experiences of fellow Tesla owners by joining online Tesla communities and forums. Engage with experienced road trippers who can provide valuable insights, recommendations, and advice specific to your destination. Learning from others’ experiences will enhance your road trip planning and enrich your overall journey.

Embarking on a long-distance Tesla Road trip can be an exhilarating experience. By following these ten smart tips, you can optimize your journey, reduce range anxiety, and ensure a memorable and enjoyable adventure. Remember, careful planning, preparedness, and utilizing the available resources and technology will help you make the most of your Tesla road trip. So, buckle up, charge your batteries, and get ready for an amazing adventure on the open road!

Ford announces free Tesla Supercharger adapters available to its EV owners until June 30

F ord recently announced that eligible Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners in the U.S. or Canada can now reserve their free Tesla Supercharger adapter. According to a Ford news release , new and existing Ford electric vehicle drivers can request the adapter through June 30 on Ford's website .

Customers will also need to be enrolled in Ford's BlueOval Charge network, which they'll be prompted to join before ordering their fast-charging adapter. According to Ford, drivers who miss the window for the free adapters can purchase one for $230.

Ford is gradually releasing a software update that enables Tesla Supercharger support for Mach-E and Lightning vehicles.

Customers can use their FordPass App or Charge Assist App to locate supported Tesla Superchargers and activate their charging session. In addition, Ford EV drivers can find which V3 Superchargers are available to Ford owners on Tesla's website .

Electrek reported that Ford was the first automaker to announce that it would add Tesla's charging plug, the North American Charging Standard (NACS), to its electric vehicles last May.

Now, the Combined Charging System (CCS) to NACS adapters will allow drivers to access over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers, more than doubling the fast-charging stations available on the Blue Charge Network.

Watch now: The most sustainable thing about the new Rivian? Its price tag

Electrek explained that Ford's adapter will support fast charging at some Tesla V3 Superchargers but not V2 Superchargers or Tesla Destination Chargers.

"Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E retail customers are the first of any non-Tesla automaker to gain access to Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada," Ford said .

Per Electrek , Ford will begin incorporating the NACS connectors into its next-generation electric vehicles in 2025, eliminating the need for the Tesla Supercharger adapters.

A study by Cox Automotive reported that potential EV buyers cited a lack of charging stations as the second largest roadblock to purchasing an EV after affordability.

As Tesla and other EV manufacturers work to make more affordable models, expanding charging networks will hopefully encourage more people to make the switch .

Getting more electric cars on the road will also help curb dangerous planet-warming pollution from gas-guzzling vehicles , driving progress toward a cleaner, healthier future.

"I would like to thank Elon [Musk] and the Tesla team for their close collaboration and Tesla's leadership to help change the lives of so many EV customers through improved access to charging," Ford President and CEO Jim Farley said .

Tesla Seems To Be Focusing On National Park Access With Supercharger Network

In two other recent articles, I spotted some upcoming Tesla Supercharger stations that will greatly improve access to national parks. Now, after seeing a third and then a fourth and a fifth and a sixth example, I’m seeing a pattern in Tesla’s behavior. And, it’s a very good thing, because the company’s working to improve access to national parks!

The first one I found was in Texas . A brand new station (Alpine, TX) and one upcoming one (Terlingua) will give drivers a clear corridor to visit the remote Big Bend National Park, along with Big Bend Ranch State Park. This will make it not only easier for people to drive in and out of the area, but in the case of vehicles where you can use the battery pack’s energy for other things, it could be good for things like camping. Travel into Mexico could also become easier for some.

The other station I identified recently was in Ely, Nevada. While Nevada has been improving its charging infrastructure in rural areas for years, some of the 50 kW CCS stations aren’t in great shape. The one in Ely isn’t reliable at all. But, with the addition of 8 V3 stalls with NACS compatibility (via an adapter for cars today), that station is going to improve access for everyone going to or from Great Basin National Park.

It’s said that once is happenstance, twice is a coincidence, and three times is a pattern (or a habit, or enemy action, depending on where you source the quote). Just a few days ago, a new permit was pulled for a Supercharger station in Bryce Canyon City, Utah . If you’re familiar with U.S. national parks, you probably recognize the name of that city, because it’s right next to Bryce Canyon National Park.

Part Of A Much Bigger Dead Zone

If it weren’t for a ChargePoint station in Kanab, Utah, and a Supercharger in Page, Arizona, Bryce Canyon would be part of the same Navajo-Hopi charging dead zone I described in this article . But that Page Supercharger is only a V2, so it won’t work for NACS vehicles without an upgrade, so in some ways, this southern Utah dead zone is a bay or a panhandle of sorts.

road trip tesla supercharger

Much of the dead zone makes sense because it’s taken up by land that has no roads at all. Places like Canyonlands and the San Rafael Swell are simply too rugged to build a road or even a basic trail on, so people have been going around them for thousands of years. Without water, all but narrow strips along rivers was unsettled for most of that time, too.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some really cool things in the area. Canyonlands is a national park, and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area hosts the shrinking Lake Powell. Capitol Reef National Park is another beautiful area, along with Utah state parks, including Goblin Valley and the Kodachrome Basin. There’s also the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which is named for the way the layers of earth are like a giant staircase coming up from the Grand Canyon.

With most of the important interstate and travel routes covered, Tesla seems to now be focusing on these sorts of areas that people don’t usually need to get to but still badly want to visit. While this new charging station will be most useful for people visiting Bryce Canyon, it’s also going to be very helpful for people visiting all of those other areas between the major north-south highways.

More Is Likely Coming In Southern Utah

Looking back at the efforts to build a corridor to Big Bend, it seems likely that Tesla will use this new station as the first in a line to cover all of the popular tourist areas further into the dead zone. If I had to guess, I’d say that the company will probably be looking to add two more stations in Torrey and Hanksville to cover the area’s network of small roads better.

But, as usual, we can’t rely on Tesla alone to build a national charging network for the United States. As good as the company’s charging is in terms of both reach and reliability, nobody can undertake such an effort alone. So, we need to encourage other charging providers and small businesses to step up and offer a lot more in the coming years. Some of them no doubt will do it, but we need to start letting those businesses know that EV drivers would visit more if there was some charging.

More in New Mexico, Montana, & Oregon

Another coming Supercharger I had already heard about in Alamogordo, New Mexico, also seems to be part of this trend. Like in Utah, this is in a big dead zone that needs to be covered better, but Alamogordo is also next to White Sands National Park. So, this plan will definitely kill two birds with one stone in much the same way.

Another permit that has been around for about a year is in Kalispell, Wyoming . Again, it’s a big dead zone that needs charging anyway, but the company’s placing the new station not far from a park, this time Glacier National Park.

So, I decided to start looking around the map to find more upcoming chargers, and it wasn’t long before I spotted another one in Chemult, Oregon. This time, a gap is being filled in the network, but it’s also not that far from Crater Lake National Park.

Between all of these locations, it’s pretty clear that somebody is making plans to make sure all of the parks are easier to get to, including for EVs that need to connect with an adapter. While not always along the beaten paths between the big cities, these parks are still places that a new car buyer expects their car to be able to reach.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll likely say it again: nobody wants to buy 99% of a car. EV infrastructure in far-flung places might not be used as heavily as the stations in the cities and along the interstates, but they’re nonetheless very important to the overall EV charging situation and essential to getting more people to jump aboard.
