St. Maarten excursions are a vibrant mix of cultural and natural attractions, including exploring dual-nation island's French and Dutch sides and enjoying its renowned beaches. St. Maarten excursions also offer a range of activities from snorkeling in crystal-clear waters to zip-lining through lush forests, appealing to both beach lovers and adventure seekers.
10 Best St. Maarten Excursions & Tours
About 300 kilometers east of Puerto Rico in the northeast part of the Caribbean lies St. Maarten, a cruise community favorite. Often confused with its northern French counterpart, St. Martin or Saint Martin, St. Maarten is the Dutch side of the island. A constituency country that is considered part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, St. Maarten occupies the southern half of the island - it is known for its beaches, casinos, jewelry-making, Guavaberry drinks, and spectacular nightlife.
Sights to See
With its European influences (evident in the architectural style of its buildings), St. Maarten is just begging to be explored by land or sea via cruise ship. Our St. Maarten cruise excursions and island tours allow you to experience all the wonders of the Dutch part of the twin island, complete with water sports, hiking and biking, marine life, and quaint history in the capital of Philipsburg.
Our St. Maarten tours and excursions do not stop there, as many of our shore tours include traveling to the French-controlled portion of the island to experience both paradise destinations by visiting two countries in one day. This opportunity alone makes any St. Maarten shore excursion and trip incredibly fulfilling.
Thrill-Seeking Activities
St. Maarten offers a wide variety of heart-pumping things to do. If you're all in on water activities, then you have to enjoy a full day or more at Orient Bay, the beach on the French side of St. Martin that's the most popular and busiest beach in the Caribbean year-round. There you can do some scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, riding a banana boat, and so much more.
Beautiful Beaches
The beautiful island of St. Maarten is home to the best treasures the Caribbean has to offer. Boasting gorgeous white sand beaches to relax on, and vibrant reef beds to snorkel through, St. Maarten has a unique and intriguing culture to boot. This island, tightly nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, is widely recognized as one of the top vacation destinations in the entire world!
Located on the North shore of the French side of St. Martin, Pinel Island is special to tourists and locals alike. It is surrounded by breathtaking clear blue waters that are ideal for water activities such as snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Not to mention it's also part of the French Marine Reserve and protected from development so future generations can enjoy its splendor. Pinel Island is a must-see if you're nearby.
Browse these excursions and other neighboring island tours offered by Shore Excursions Group. A thrilling trip full of jet boating, snorkeling, relaxing nights of wine tasting, sunset cruises, and easygoing sailing adventures await! Anything is possible in St. Maarten.

We went to the beach by the airport and got run over by large aircraft landing. It was wonderful. Do it!
Not sure what excursion to do in St. Maarten but if you go to Cozumel be sure to book this one.

Which one is Maho beach?(:

Just get a cab to Maho Beach and they will drop you off at that bar. Use the facilities there and food and drink from the bar. Stay how ever long you want and then call a cab for a return to the ship. Just ask driver to take you to the beach where the big Airplanes fly over, they will know where you want to go. It's the beach right next to Princess Juliana International Airport

Go to the ports of call board for St. Maarten. Do your research. Don't depend on the cruise line excursions which are expensive and crowded.
Orient Beach is iconic. For a first visit to St Martin it's an excellent choice. A long, curved, gently sloping white sand beach. Prior to the pandemic it had a number of restaurants/bars overlooking the beach. It is well known for a clothing optional section at one end. Easily avoided and out of site for those that prefer more titillating bikinis and speedos.

We usually buy the round trip taxi option (which holds about 8 people) at the taxi stand (very organized). Then the taxi's are sitting in the parking lot waiting...no need to call.

No need to book with the cruise ship. If you want a private tour check out Bernards Tours...one of the best in St Maarten...Orient Beach, Marigot & Maho.

The St Maarten yacht race is a lot of fun. You can just sit back and enjoy or be a part of the crew.

What does that taxi usually cost? I'd be in a party of 7

We are headed back to St Maarten this spring and have been really looking forward to going back to Maho Beach again. Last time we booked through a Royal Caribbean excursion and the transportation was nice but you’re beholden to their departure and return timing. This time we’re planning just to taxi it as others have indicated.
As an aside, I’m curious as to how Maho Beach looks these days. Recent webcam footage appears to show a significant reduction in the beach space. Curious to hear the experience from others have since the resumption of cruising.

That was so helpful for a question about St. Maarten............
We normally just take a taxi to orient beach
I would add this - it's a hike over to the airplane beach. Lots of traffic, narrow little road, and you thread through town. The point is - don't cut it too close to all aboard because getting back just takes a while. If you wait for one more plane and think the taxi guy can just shoot over to the ship right quick you might end up spending more time in StM then you planned...

Another easy option is take water taxi that is at port pier over to great bay beach and you go to holland house for a nice lunch or rent one of their chairs and get some cocktails.
Or taxi to orient beach. They are all nice.
Love2travel4
Looking to grab a taxi over to Orient (the clothing side lol!). Is there a specific location/beach bar I should ask the driver to drop us at? We would like to have access to renting chairs/umbrellas, bathrooms/changing rooms and maybe some food drinks. Also just curious on estimated price of taxi for 2 to/from Orient Beach. Thank you!

It's been about 2 years that we did it but I believe it was $12.00pp. roundtrip
At the taxi stand they'll be a board up that will have prices/destinations.
This is very organized...you purchase your tickets from a cashier and then there are
signs directing you to the correct bus. They fill up quickly and are on their way.

We were in St Marten in September, a taxi to Orient Beach was $25 each way for the 2 of us. There was no longer a sign listing prices, the man organizing the taxis told our driver what the price would be.
It's been a couple of years, but when we went to St. Marten, we went to the taxi stand and one of the drivers offered to be our personal driver for the day. He took us all over the island, we stopped somewhere and fed iguanas, went to Orient Beach, went to Grand Case (picture below) and had lunch there. Then we went to Marigot, and then to Maho Beach. He then took us to some other little community and we picked up some souvenirs. We just lucked into it, but it was one of the best excursions we've been on.

Or, you can walk to Great Bay Beach (the one you can see from the ship) in 15 minutes or so.

Orient Beach is further .. I was quoting my experience to Maho and back from a few years ago to give the poster an example. With the return of ships to St Maarten i'm assuming things with the taxi's will return to normal also very surprised the destination sign with prices wasn't up. I'll be there in March and will check it out.

I wasn't the pandemic that effected the restaurants/bars (or Lolos), it was hurricane Irma that wiped them out. They've slowly rebuilt a few of them and they look quite inviting from the videos and pictures I've viewed.

Fantastic Kayak and Snorkel Trip Through Royal Caribbean!
My sister and I went on the kayaking and snorkeling trip offered by Tri-Sport after booking it on the Royal Caribbean. From the boat the air-conitioned bus took about 25 minutes to reach the kayaking spot. Our tour guides for the excursion were Joost and Chris and both were very knowledgable and friendly. You're able to bring cameras, towels, etc. on the excursion and prior to kayaking (which we were informed would get everything wet) we were provided a giant, lockable trunk to put all the items we wanted to remain dry. We kayaked about 25 minutes out and around to another bay where we got out and put on our snorkel gear. Then we paddled out to an area of the bay that had a number of sea life including a school of baby barracuda. Joost was in a kayak making sure everyone was having a good time and Chris snorkeled with the group providing names for sea life and pointing out unique marine-life under the water. After about 45 minutes (which I found to be adequate snorkeling time) we returned to shore where we boarded our kayaks once again and headed back to our starting point. Once back, we handed in all our gear and Joost took our complimentary drink orders. With our drinks in hand we were able to relax and reflect on our fun adventure at a beach side bar. Prior to the end of the exclusion Joost provided my sister and me much helpful information about checking out additional local spots before heading back to our cruise ship. He provided great information about the island taxis and busses and their cost and how to catch them, along with details about a beach next to the airport that we wanted to check out. Chris and Joost you guys rock and we had an awesome time on this excursion and at the airport beach afterward! The jet engines practically blew us away :-) Suzanne.
My daughter (13 years old) and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour while during our shore excursion during our cruise. It was a great way to see St. Maarten. The tour guide was excellent and he treated us to a drink at the local bar before we returned to the ship. I would recommend this tour.
Recommend you take this bike ride. Guides (2) were excellent and very informative about the area & history. Ride is easy except one hill, but you can get off & push the bike. No hurry, can go at your own pace up the hill. Tour was thru the town & up to the fort. Money spent was well worth the tour!!!
My husband and I had booked the Kayak and Snorkel Adventure through Royal Caribbean Adventure of the Seas (05/08/15). We were met by Barends (sp?) at the pier and took a short walk to a van that was to take us to Kim Sha Beach. The van was air conditioned and the driver was pleasant. After about a 20 minute scenic ride, we arrived at Kim Sha Beach and were greeted by Joost and Frank (Barends arrived a few minutes later). They gave a brief safety lesson and equipment demonstration. We were quickly in the water, paddling the kayaks to our destination. The guides were all very helpful but not pushy or overly cautious in any way, which made the excursion very enjoyable. Once we pulled the kayaks into our destination, we were able to spend an hour snorkeling. The guides were in the water with us or assisting us from their kayaks - again, they were not overly pushy or cautious and really let us enjoy the experience without being attached to them. The guides were there to educate on what types of things we were seeing while snorkeling. We then got back in our kayaks and paddled to our original starting point. The area was gorgeous - blue water, sailboats, airplanes taking off overhead. We ended the excursion with a complimentary drink from a nice little beach bar. It was my favorite excursion of the trip and one of the least expensive. If we visit St. Maarten again, we will be sure to do another tour with Tri Sport.
My wife and I very much enjoyed the St. Maarten Philipsburg Historical Bike Tour on May 2/2015 - very capably handled by two excellent guides - Joost and Chris - very informative and fun to get out and about on the island from the cruise ship.
My husband and I arrived in St. Maarten via the Disney Fantasy cruise ship. We are both very active and enjoy cycling so I wanted to find a tour that included both of them. When I came across Tri-Sport I was so excited to see the various bike tours they offered. While we are both very active and cycling frequently, at first, the description of the hills were a bit worrisome. However, from all the great reviews I read I knew that even if I had an issue I could always walk the bike up the hill if I needed. I contacted Megan multiple times and she was so friendly and very easy to work with. She answered all of my questions quickly and provided me with great directions on how to get to the meeting spot. We walked off the cruise ship and easily found the location, which is right in the cruise terminal area! Super easy to find. Joost arrived along with one other biker who was going to be joining our tour. After getting our bikes and fitting my helmet with my go-pro strap we were ready to head out. Joost was an excellent tour guide. We stopped at the map in the boardwalk/downtown area so we could see where we were going and off we headed. That first hill was a killer, but I made it with lots of encouragement from Joost and after that I had no hesitations. There is traffic, but as soon as you get off the 'main route' it is very calm and very beautiful riding along the coast line. The stop at Orient beach had gorgeous views and the coke tasted amazing since it was a pretty hot day even though it was only 1100 am! I would not hesitate to book this tour! You will enjoy it. Joost was great and the views were amazing, plus we got in some much needed exercise after being on a cruise ship at sea for two days! You will not regret doing this tour. If you are looking for something a little different, with an amazing tour guide and a bike....this tour is for you!
