ruby princess cruise cancelled

Damaged, delayed Ruby Princess won't depart San Francisco until Sunday, cruise line says

T he saga of the Ruby Princess cruise ship has a new development. The ship damaged during a docking accident won't depart San Francisco for Alaska until Sunday, according to the cruise line.

The ship's captain told passengers Friday that repairs to the hull likely won't be complete until Saturday.

Anita Lawhon from Reno says eating has been about the only thing to do on board the Ruby Princess, as passengers wait to depart. She shot video on board the ship Friday afternoon and spoke to us from the ship's stern.

"It's only been a day so everyone's okay at this point, but I think people are getting antsy and ready to go," said Lawhon.

We saw crews from the Port of San Francisco and Coast Guard inspecting the hole in the vessel and repairs which have been done so far.

"Our main concern is the vessel able to transport passengers and operate safety," said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Levi Read.

"They do say work is being done but I am standing above the hole, I can't see the hole but I do know nothing is going on with it," said passenger Dan Faltings.

Faltings from Livermore was trying to keep his cool but says it's not easy watching your vacation tick away.

"I feel like if we're still here tomorrow, I'm going to be at guest services asking for my money back and get off this boat," said Faltings.

"Completely ruined it. Ruined it, big time," said Henry Barela.

Anger from many passengers on the Ruby Princess cruise ship.

"They're taking away Glacier Bay. Everyone says go to Glacier Bay. That's not going to occur," said Jim Simpson.

Simpson is onboard with his wife and grandkids.

We first met Thursday talking to each other via phone from his stateroom balcony, just as the delays were getting started.

He tells ABC7 News despite the inconvenience, he's trying to be understanding.

"Things get beyond your control. And I think that's where a lot of it is right now," Simpson said.

Some passengers say the cruise line's offerings and discounts make up for their loss of vacation.

"With their offering, it's pretty substantial to kind of overlook the problem," said Brian Perry.

But not so for others.

"Why would I want to? I'll take another cruise line instead if I want to do that," said Barela.

Pat Madea and her daughter Allie flew in from Georgia and Florida with their group of 10 family members.

They say while they're choosing to stay onboard, they can only hope the experience is worth it.

"I said you're going to go to places you've never dreamed of. It's totally different of everything you've seen. And now we're not really going to see that. So, yeah, there's disappointment there," Madea said.

The delayed 10-day sailing will now be a 7-day cruise returning to San Francisco on Sunday, July 16.

Princess Cruises says guests who elect to cancel their cruise will receive a 100% refund of their cruise fare, post-cruise hotel packages and transfers booked through Princess, prepaid shore excursions and other prepaid items and taxes, fees and port expenses. Each guest will also receive a 50% Future Cruise Credit of the cruise fare paid on this voyage, which may be applied to any future Princess cruise that is booked by February 1, 2024 and sails by February 1, 2025. They may remain onboard until 1100 local time on Sunday, July 9 to better assist with alternative plans they may be making.

Guests who continue with their Princess vacation will receive a 75% refund of the cruise fare paid as well as unused pre-paid shore excursions booked through Princess and the refundable portion of the taxes, fees and port expenses for the missed ports. Each guest will also receive a 75% Future Cruise Credit equal to the cruise fare paid on this voyage, which may be applied to any future Princess cruise that is booked by February 1, 2024and sails by February 1, 2025.

This is a breaking news update. Previous story follows.

A 10-day voyage to Alaska, which was set to sail at 4 p.m. on Thursday, was still docked in San Francisco on Friday morning.

The Ruby Princess, which is operated by Princess Cruises, made contact with Pier 27 on Thursday. The collision caused damage to the hull of the ship and the dock.

Overnight and early morning repair work put crews on a crane, putting them close enough to patch up damage.

Crews welded the hole shut and are now waiting for the Coast Guard to give the all clear before they can set sail to Alaska.

The hole in the Ruby Princess cruise ship was repaired Friday, July 7, 2023.

"It definitely looks like it got a good repair on there," Robin Richardson told ABC7 News. "Because there was a big hole yesterday. So, hopefully that'll do it!"

Richardson was on-board at the time of impact and wrapped up a 10-day Alaskan voyage herself. However, this new round of passengers has remained docked on Day 1 of their trip, when they'd otherwise be on open water.

"Going underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and starting our cruise and being happy about it," Richardson described of Day 1. "But they're sitting here and not starting their cruise. So, that's unfortunate."

VIDEO: Passengers on Antarctic cruise ship hit by deadly 'rogue wave' speak out

Passengers who boarded the ship Thursday have been asked to stay on board and not come ashore. There are 3,256 guests and 1,161 crew onboard as the ship remains docked at Pier 27.

The captain came over the loud speaker Friday and announced that they hope to leave soon, plan to accommodate the passengers for the lost day, and asked for patience.

By the captain's 8 a.m. update, the Ruby Princess was patched up. By 9 a.m., Princess Cruises was still awaiting clearance from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Passenger Jennifer Ding spoke with us from aboard the ship.

"This was probably about 4-6 months in the making for us," she explained. "We have birthdays, anniversaries, and I'm currently pregnant and expecting. So there's a lot that we're celebrating on this cruise," she said.

Ding described the atmosphere as optimistic- hopeful they'll depart today despite the delay.

"Everyone that I've encountered has been in good spirits," Ding told ABC7 News. "We just had breakfast with two other couples and they were all in good spirits."

The crash is something Captain Allan Post with the Texas A&M Maritime Academy said is not uncommon in the maritime world, especially when operating large ships.

"The Ruby Princess is about 950 feet long and about 115,000-tons," Capt. Post pointed out. "With that much weight and that much sail area, the vessel is affected by wind, by current, and by the technical abilities of its design."

Princess Cruises addressed what it's calling a "goodwill gesture of compensation." However, it's unknown exactly what that will look like for the thousands of passengers impacted.

In an 8:45 a.m. statement on Friday, Princess Cruises said it is in, "Continued discussions with the U.S. Coast Guard regarding clearance for Ruby Princess to depart San Francisco and while we are confident the ship will be cleared to sail today, the time of departure is still being finalized."

Investigation into the bar pilot

We're learning more about the Ruby Princess pilot. In some ways, this is an elite group. There aren't many bar pilots, 52 at the moment with four trainees in the pipeline according to the Board of Pilot Commissioners Executive Director.

The investigation into what went wrong with the Ruby Princess during docking at San Francisco's Pier 27 Thursday morning is in the early fact-finding phase.

"It appears the port quarter of the Ruby Princess made contact with Pier 27," said U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander William Williams.

The Coast Guard which is assisting in the investigation says the pilot is being drug and alcohol tested which is standard in a serious marine incident.

"The Coast Guard has sent two teams, an investigations team and an inspection port state control team to the vessel and will be conducting those inspections and investigations," said Williams.

The San Francisco Bar Pilots are responsible for safely navigating ships they board over the offshore sand bar to docks throughout the Bay Area.

A Spokesperson working with the San Francisco Bar Pilots tells ABC7 News, "We can confirm a pilot was involved in a hard landing at Pier 27 this morning. We are cooperating with all necessary agencies in looking into this matter and cannot comment further."

The Board of Pilot Commissioners tells ABC7 News the pilot is on the Pilot Evaluation Committee which is responsible for trainees and that anyone on that committee would have to be a pilot more than 10 years.

The investigation is now in the hands of the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal agencies who were notified about the early morning incident.

ABC7 News reporters Tim Johns, Suzanne Phan, Melanie Woodrow, Amanda del Castillo and Cornell Barnard contributed to this report.

The hole in the Ruby Princess cruise ship was repaired Friday, July 7, 2023.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A cruise operator that failed to cancel a voyage from Sydney that led to a major COVID-19 outbreak was ruled negligent in its duty of care to passengers in an Australian class-action case Wednesday.

The Ruby Princess ocean liner left Sydney on March 8, 2020, with 2,671 passengers aboard for a 13-day cruise to New Zealand but returned in 11 days as Australia’s borders were closing. COVID-19 spread to 663 passengers and claimed 28 lives.

Passenger Susan Karpik was the lead plaintiff in the case against British-American cruise operator Carnival and its subsidiary Princess Cruises, the ship’s owner.

Federal Court Justice Angus Stewart ruled that Carnival had been negligent as defined by Australian consumer law by allowing the cruise to depart in the early months of the pandemic. He said Carnival had a duty to take reasonable care of her health and safety in regard to COVID-19.

“I have found that before the embarkation of passengers on the Ruby Princess for the cruise in question, the respondents knew or ought to have known about the heightened risk of coronavirus infection on the vessel and its potentially lethal consequences and that their procedures for screening passengers and crew members for the virus were unlikely to screen out all infectious individuals,” Stewart said.

Carnival had already experienced outbreaks on its cruises in the previous month aboard the Grand Princess off California and the Diamond Princess off Japan, the judge said.

Carnival had failed to explain why it offered free cancellation for all cruises worldwide leaving from March 9 — the day after the Ruby Princess departed — and suspended all cruises on March 13, he said.

“To the respondents’ knowledge, to proceed with the cruise carried significant risk of a coronavirus outbreak with possible disastrous consequences, yet they proceeded regardless,” Stewart said.

Susan Karpik had sued Carnival for more than 360,000 Australian dollars ($230,000).

However, she was only awarded her out-of-pocket medical expenses of AU$4,423.48 ($2,823.28) for reasons including that the judge did not accept she suffered from long COVID and that Carnival had refunded all the passengers’ fares.

But she said she was happy with the outcome.

“I was very pleased with that finding. And I hope the other passengers are pleased with that finding too,” she told reporters outside court.

“I hope the finding brings some comfort to them because they’ve all been through the mill and back,” she added.

Her lawyer Vicky Antzoulatos said other passengers who suffered worse consequences from their sickness could expect larger payouts.

While Susan Karpik’s symptoms were relatively mild, her husband Henry Karpik spent two months in hospital and almost died from his infection.

“Susan’s husband was very catastrophically injured, so we expect that he will have a substantial claim, and that will be the same for a number of the passengers on the ship,” Antzoulatos said.

Each passenger will have to prove their claims unless Carnival agrees to settle, she said.

“It’s been a long time coming and a very comprehensive victory for the passengers on the Ruby Princess,” Antzoulatos said.

Carnival Australia said in a statement it was considering the judgment in detail.

“The pandemic was a difficult time in Australia’s history, and we understand how heartbreaking it was for those affected,” Carnival said.

Princess Cruises Cancels More Sailings in California, Mexico, and the Caribbean

Guests on canceled cruises have multiple options for reimbursement. Here's what to know.

ruby princess cruise cancelled

Princess Cruises extended cancellations on several of its sailings into August this week, and put some on hold for the remainder of the year, the company shared with Travel + Leisure .

The cruise line canceled California and Mexico sailings on its Ruby Princess ship as well as Caribbean sailings on the Caribbean Princess through Aug. 21. Additionally, all remaining sailings in the Mediterranean on the Enchanted Princess have been canceled for 2021.

While Princess is putting much of its plans on hold, the cruise line said it was working with government officials to see if any Alaska sailings could be possible this year. Cruising in the United States remains on hold , and Canada has banned all large ships until at least next year, which affects Alaska's cruise industry due to a century-old law that requires large foreign-flagged ships to stop in Canada first.

"We continue to have constructive discussions with the CDC but still have many questions that remain unanswered. We are working diligently to resume sailing in the U.S. and meet the CDC guidelines," Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises, told T+L in a statement. "We know our guests are just as eager as we are to begin sailing, and we appreciate their patience as we get close to resuming cruising."

Guests on canceled cruises can either receive a full refund, a future cruise credit of 100% of the paid fare plus an additional 10% bonus, or the choice of taking an equivalent cruise later this year or next year.

When U.S. cruises do eventually resume, the CDC will require ships to sail test cruises with volunteers. Ships where 98% of crew and 95% of passengers are fully vaccinated are exempt from the test sailings.

Currently, Princess only requires proof of vaccination for its "Summer Seacations" from Southampton and is not mandating it for other cruises on sale.

Vaccines have become a flashpoint in recent weeks with the CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings recently saying their ships may not be able to stop in Florida after the state banned the use of vaccine passports .

Carnival found negligent over cruise that led to early COVID outbreak

Carnival was negligent in covid cruise outbreak, court rules

An australian judge said the company made “misleading representations” that the march 2020 cruise was safe.

ruby princess cruise cancelled

A federal court in Australia ruled Wednesday that Carnival Corporation was negligent in its duty to protect cruise passengers from a coronavirus outbreak on a Princess Cruise Line ship in March 2020.

More than 660 passengers fell ill and nearly 30 people died during a sailing from Sydney to New Zealand on the Ruby Princess, which is owned by a subsidiary of Carnival. The incident was at the center of one of Australia’s largest covid outbreaks.

In addition to negligence, Justice Angus Stewart determined that the cruise line made “misleading representations” that the cruise was safe. The landmark decision in a class-action suit against a cruise company is unprecedented, according to Shine Lawyers, which led the case.

In his judgment , Stewart detailed the cruise company’s litany of lapses, such as allowing the trip to go on in light of the global health crisis and providing insufficient health screening before boarding. The company also fell short by not mandating social distancing in public areas or providing masks and hand sanitizer to passengers with sick cabin companions.

Stewart also wrote that the company knew about coronavirus risks on ships. Prior to the Ruby Princess sailing, there were cases of coronavirus onboard the Diamond Princess and the Grand Princess , both of which are owned by Princess Cruise Line.

Susan Karpik, a retired nurse from New South Wales who was 69 at the time of the cruise, was the lead plaintiff on the suit. She and her husband, Henry, then a 72-year-old retired police officer, both contracted covid. He tested positive for influenza A on the ship and later for covid at the hospital, according to the decision. She had symptoms and likely caught the virus from her husband, though the timing and source was never verified, according to the ruling.

On March 12, four days after their cruise departed Sydney, Henry Karpik complained of feeling weak, tired and lethargic. His condition worsened over the following days.

On March 15, the ship received news that the Australian government was going to close its borders and returned early from New Zealand. It arrived back in Sydney four days later. Authorities instructed passengers to isolate for 14 days at home.

Henry Karpik’s health continued to deteriorate and, shortly after the cruise, he was admitted to the hospital for a severe case of covid. He was discharged two months later, on May 16.

Susan Karpik sought more than $227,000 in damages for personal injuries, distress and disappointment. The court awarded her about $2,800 for medical expenses, but no punitive damages.

“We have seen the judgment and are considering it in detail,” a Carnival Australia spokesperson said in a statement. “The pandemic was a difficult time in Australia’s history, and we understand how heartbreaking it was for those affected.”

Martin J. Davies, director of the Maritime Law Center at the Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, said this case is significant because the judge determined that the cruise line was liable for passengers contracting the virus and that it could have taken measures to prevent the outbreak.

“The judge said Carnival should have figured it out enough by this point in the pandemic to have either canceled the cruise or have done things differently,” said Davies, a senior consultant with the law firm that represented Carnival in the lawsuit.

Pablo Rueda-Saiz, an associate professor at the University of Miami School of Law, explained that the lawsuit is based on Australian consumer law. According to the court’s findings, the cruise line did not uphold its obligations to its customers.

“It is mostly based on regulation that is not explicitly established in the contract but nevertheless establishes a series of duties for the common carriers, in this case, the cruise line,” he said.

Rueda-Saiz said he does not expect this decision will trigger similar cases around the world, because it is very specific to Australian law.

“I don’t think it’s going to have a snowball effect,” he said, “and besides, people are not willing to go through what a trial entails to obtain such small compensations.”

A cruise ship with 800 covid cases docks in Sydney

Davies said the law firm will have to appeal if it wants to win monetary compensation for most other plaintiffs.

“ I suspect the plaintiffs will appeal because, although they won on liability and they established that Carnival was liable, they took next to no money,” he said. “There are legal points that they will be arguing, because there’s a pretty big class of plaintiffs with hundreds of people.”

The pandemic halted the U.S. cruise industry for more than a year; it was one of the last sectors of travel to return because of tight governmental restrictions and a fear of outbreaks. Thousands of passengers contracted the virus, including 800 people on the Majestic Princess who tested positive last November.

The website of Carnival’s Australian division updated its health protocols on Aug. 29. It states that proof of vaccination, pre-boarding testing and vaccine exemption applications are no longer required. Passengers who experience symptoms within five days of departure must take a coronavirus test and cannot travel with a positive result.

“We remain unwavering in our commitment to the well-being and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit,” the company stated.

Carnival ruled negligent over cruise where 662 passengers got COVID early in pandemic

Update: Ruby Princess cruise ship remains docked in San Francisco after collision with pier

By KPIX Staff

Click here for updates on this story

SAN FRANCISCO ( KPIX ) — A damaged cruise ship remained docked in San Francisco Friday morning after colliding with the pier upon arrival Thursday, delaying an Alaskan vacation for hundreds of passengers.

The Ruby Princess was expected to depart San Francisco Thursday afternoon for Alaska, but the ship remained at Pier 27 as crews worked to determine its seaworthiness.

The ship crashed into the dock early Thursday morning, denting the ship and damaging the pier. No one was injured in the incident and the cause of the collision was not determined as of Friday morning.

Passengers disembarked after the collision, and the new group of passengers was allowed to get on the ship for the Alaska cruise beginning at 11:30 a.m. The ship was originally scheduled to set sail at 4 p.m. Thursday.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Bar Pilots spokesperson said in a statement to KPIX 5: “We can confirm a pilot was involved in an incident at Pier 27 this morning. We are cooperating with all necessary agencies in looking into this matter and cannot comment further.”

On Thursday evening, Princess Cruises issued the following statement:

Princess Cruises is in continued discussions with the U.S. Coast Guard regarding clearance for Ruby Princess to depart San Francisco, but a departure timeframe has not yet been confirmed. The safety of our guests and crew remain our top priority, and Ruby Princess will depart once the ship is deemed by U.S. Coast as fit to sail.

The cruise line’s technical experts and shoreside team will remain working on this situation, and the ship will set sail from San Francisco should clearance to depart be received at any time tonight.

The ship was still docked as of 7 a.m. Friday. Princess said it would be providing passengers “a goodwill gesture of compensation once the full effect of the necessary changes is known.”

Passengers who were embarking on the Ruby Princess’ next 10-day trip to Alaska got an up-close look at the damaged ship.

“I was certainly thinking about how the Titanic’s been in the news lately and so all of a sudden, I didn’t know anything about this until she told me, the next person in line, and I’m thinking there’s a hole in the boat? it feels a little iffy,” said Maryann Will. “I’ve come all this way and was planning for three years so here we are.”

“I guess I’m willing to accept that they wouldn’t be getting all these people on a boat if they had concerns is my hope,” added Will.

“I just happened to see it on the news from my hotel room, I was waiting to check out,” said Ann Portillo from Scottsdale, Arizona. “I’m sure they know what’s best, I have been on many cruises and I don’t see this as being a huge issue, it didn’t look that bad.”

“I just hope it’s safe because of what happened this morning, I’m sure they wouldn’t let everybody get on the boat unless it was safe,” said Debbie McIntosh.

“As long as the lifeboats work,” Mike McIntosh said as he laughed.

Ruby Princess cruise ship passengers excluded from class action take their fight to High Court of Australia

Cruise ship passengers disembark from the Princess Cruises owned Ruby Princess at Circular Quay in Sydney.

A group of passengers from the COVID-affected Ruby Princess cruise have taken their battle for compensation to Canberra, after being excluded from a class action because they booked under United States conditions, which included a waiver on class actions.

When the Ruby Princess docked and dropped its passengers in Sydney on March 19, 2020, it marked a pivotal moment in the arrival of the global pandemic in Australia.

Twenty-eight of the passengers who travelled on the cruise died with COVID-19, with 660 others contracting the virus.

The ship had sailed from Sydney to New Zealand and back in March 2020.

A special commission of inquiry later found New South Wales Health made serious mistakes in managing the disembarkation, including classifying the ship low risk, but stopped short of apportioning specific blame, or making recommendations.

The exterior of the High Court of Australia in Canberra

The class action, which was heard over five weeks in Sydney last year, is considering a claim there was a breach of duty of care, and a failure to take appropriate measures to warn and protect passengers from the risk of infection.

It also alleged breaches of Australia's consumer law, including engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct.

In its case, Carnival Cruises, the owner of Ruby Princess, claimed the risks could not be avoided.

A number of those hoping to sue the cruise company were excluded from the class action because they had signed the US contract and were subject to a waiver on class actions.

Today their lawyers told the High Court the waiver is unenforceable under Australian consumer law, which voids any terms that are unfair.

But the cruise company is arguing the Australian law does not extend to a law of a place outside Australia.

The waiver does not prohibit individuals from attempting to sue the company.

'The contract is being forced by one party'

Former nurse Susan Karpik, a Canadian citizen, is heading the class action.

Ms Karpik said the company failed in its duty to take reasonable care of passengers aboard the ill-fated cruise.

Her lawyer, Justin Gleeson, told the High Court a section of Australian Consumer Law made a term of a consumer contract void if it was unfair.

He argued that in carrying out business in Australia, Carnival submitted to Australian laws and the term of the US contract waiving the right to engage in class action was unfair.

Ruby Princess cruise ship docked.

"There were 2,600 people on the same vessel, experiencing the same cruise," Mr Gleeson said.

"It is perfectly acceptable to Princess to accept a class action claim from 1,700 [Australian] passengers.

"What did Princess do to prove a legitimate interest to accept they could exclude 700 other people from that action? They did nothing."

Mr Gleeson went on to explain the waiver clause was unfair because it limited the rights of passengers to sue the carrier, but placed no such limit on litigation options for the carrier.

"A barrier has been erected to prevent passengers engaging in litigation when there is no equivalent barrier for the carrier," he said.

"Before the service has been provided or a dispute has happened … before the passenger has any option to consider pursuing class action, their decision has been made for them.

"The contract is being forced by one party onto another."

The cruise line's lawyers argued in their submission when a contract provided for the resolution of disputes in a forum other than an Australian court, and pursuant to a law that upholds the validity of a class action waiver, there is "no imbalance caused to those rights under the contract by the class action waiver clause".

The Commonwealth attorney-general is seeking to intervene in favour of Ms Karpik.

The hearing will continue on Friday.

Ruby Princess Itineraries

Ruby princess review, review of ruby princess.

The 2008-built Ruby Princess cruise ship is the 9th and last Grand-class Princess Cruises liner, with sisterships Caribbean ,  Diamond ,  Golden (now Pacific Adventure) ,  Grand ,  Crown , Emerald ,  Star (now Pacific Encounter)  and  Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9378462) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310567000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Ruby Princess cruise ship

The 3100-passenger ship Ruby Princess follows the highly evolutionary Crown Princess and Emerald Princess cruise ships. The vessels are virtually the same in layout and design, so if travellers have sailed on Crown, they will not have any trouble finding their way around Emerald or Ruby. But for those who have not travelled on Princess' Grand-class vessels, or for cruisers for whom a Ruby Princess sailing is their first cruise with the line, the ship is going to surprise, and in most cases, delight them with far higher levels of kitchen, service and facilities than passengers would expect on a stylish, mega-vessel catering to over 3,000 guests.  For the most part, Ruby Princess isn't an innovator. The cruise liner has all the most popular Princess facilities - like the 3-deck Piazza with its own bakery, as well as many of those found on older vessels, including the Sanctuary (adults sundeck) and speciality restaurants Sabatini's and Crown Grill.

Although there are not too many surprises on this newest Grand-class vessel, there are some gentle improvements and enhancements. On the Ruby cruise ship, Princess has expanded the appeal of the Wheelhouse Bar (pub) to include English-inspired lunches. Suite guests have the option to enjoy intimate breakfasts at Sabatini's. The new Ultimate Ship Tour allows guests to explore normally never seen onboard spaces, such as the engine room, funnel, photo lab, Navigation Bridge. Among the expanded enrichment projects are Mixology@Sea (bartending skills) and Navigation@Sea (cruise ship navigation lessons).

Decks and Cabins

Most Ruby Princess staterooms (1530 total, in 33 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (680). Almost 80% of the ship's outside staterooms have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 31. The largest accommodations are the Balcony Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Ruby Princess features three dining rooms, all offering tasteful, Caribbean-themed menu. Botticelli is for fixed-seating dining, while Michaelangelo and Da Vinci are for passengers who have chosen "Anytime Dining". Reservations are available but are not required. Da Vinci also welcomes guests for waiter-service breakfast and lunch. Rotating menu options include soups, appetizers, mains and desserts. There are also signature pasta and choices like Caesar salad and salmon. The healthy Lotus Spa selections are low in sodium and fat. Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court look identical and are open all day long. The Horizon section serves as a lido buffet restaurant and features breakfast buffets. Lunch choices may include unusual dishes like peanut butter sandwiches and fried banana. There is also the Italian-styled piazza, around which are located the International Cafe (with its wonderful coffees and scrumptious pastries, quiche and chocolate fondue); across the way is Vines, ship's wine and sushi bar (it's got the only really good wine list onboard Ruby).

In January 2016 Celebrity chef Curtis Stone teamed up with  Princess Cruises  for his first-at-sea speciality restaurant serving high-quality, inventive food. During Ruby Princess' dry dock, Share replaced the signature Italian Sabatini's and introduced new bedding, dining options, entertainment and more. Share is only open for dinner and applies a $39 cover charge. Its menu features five areas from which to select multiple dishes and a charcuterie platter. It's hard to order only one of each, as there are enticing recipes like a twice-cooked duck with fennel, parmesan crumb and bacon jus; or shrimp salad with turnip, citrus salt, brioche and lemon gel.

Share is only found on board  Emerald Princess  and Ruby Princess, for now. "Crafted by Curtis" dishes are on the MDR menus fleetwide. If you wonder why to pay extra at Share, here are the cool things about the brand new Curtis Stone restaurant which make it worth the splurge. Food like this cannot be found anywhere else on the ship. Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess are simple when it comes to dining venues. Before Share, both ships had three main dining rooms, a steakhouse and a buffet, all of which average in terms of overall experience and quality. From its celebrity chef to its natural ingredients and perfectly sized portions, you won't find food like Share's anywhere else on the ship.

Perfect for couples and large groups. This space is open, airy and large, with long tables and more intimate seating arrangements. Large groups have enough room to engage and share dishes. Couples can enjoy more peace and quiet. The ambience is upscale, yet not stuffy. Share's family-style dining and chic decor allow guests to dress their best and still feel relaxed. Passengers will feel more like they're in someone's home, talking and passing plates across the table.

Service at Share is second to none. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the menu and all ingredients handpicked by the celebrity chef's team. According to Stone: "The enthusiasm in that kitchen right now is actually unparalleled to anything I've ever done; they're so energetic and so up for it."

Guests will have room for dessert. Appetizers, entrees and dessert options, complementing a cheese plate, are conservative in size. Passengers will not only expand their palate by picking at multiple dishes but will also be able to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Follows the complete list of Ruby Princess restaurants and food bars.

Each of the ship's venues has a different offering. Crooners feature music trivia contests and a pianist. Explorer's Lounge hosts events for everything from Wii sports tournaments to art auctions, plus comedy shows and magicians. The Piazza offers various demonstrations, circus-lite acts and musical performances throughout the day. Club Fusion is a part game show, part nightclub venue. Ruby Princess Wiki

Princess Cruises Ruby ship is the fleet's last Grand-class liner ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with (same-designed) sisterships Crown and Emerald . The other (similarly-designed) fleetmates in this class are Caribbean , Diamond , Golden (now Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Sapphire , Star (now Pacific Encounter) .

The liner was christened on November 6, 2008, at  Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) Florida . Its godparents (Trista and Ryan Sutter) met at ABC's dating show "The Bachelorette", then fell in love and got married. The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) started on November 8, out of Fort Lauderdale.

Skywalkers Night Club (ship's disco) is located aft of the funnel. It's not hanging over the stern, like on the sisterships from the modified Grand-Class (Emerald and Crown) and also unlike Diamond and Sapphire. Fun fact is that Ruby Princess was the first ship to offer "The Ultimate Ship Tour". This program allows passengers to have a look at the shipboard organization process.

In December 2018, Ruby became the world's first cruise liner allowing Chinese passengers to make onboard shopping payments via both Alipay and WeChat Pay - China's top-two popular digital payment platforms. Alipay's in-store payment service covers 40+ countries, and as of 2018 is used by over 900 million people worldwide. WeChat Pay (as of 2018) has around 800 million monthly users worldwide. In 2017, its total volume was around USD 6.5 trillion. Alipay digital payment was introduced on Majestic Princess during ship's 2017 summer homeporting in Shanghai .

Ruby Princess refurbishments review

The ship's drydock refurbishment in 2015 (done in  Vancouver BC Canada /December 3-14) was mainly for general maintenance and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

Two new premium dining venues were added. “SHARE by Curtis Stone” is a family-style restaurant by Curtis Stone (an Australian celebrity chef). Its menu features charcuterie (premium quality meat products), composed salads, homemade pasta, gourmet desserts. The new “Salty Dog Gastropub” cuisine experience (by chef Ernesto Uchimura) is provided by a classic pub menu offered nightly in the Wheelhouse Bar (on Promenade Dec 7) with craft beers and pub favorites served in small plates.

In 2015, aft on Sun Deck 16, “SHARE” replaced "Sabatini’s” – the Italian restaurant, featured on the Princess ships Caribbean, Coral, Emerald and Sun. “SHARE” restaurant debuted on Emerald Princess (in 2015 December). The “Salty Dog Gastropub” debuted on Crown Princess (in 2015 October).

All cruise cabins were upgraded with the new "Princess Luxury Bed".

Club Class Mini-Suite services and amenities were introduced.

The ship’s gym was upgraded with new sports equipment and free weights.

During drydock 2018 (October/USD 8,2 million project) the ship received 3 new dining venues - Slice Pizzeria, The Salty Dog Grill and SHARE (by Curtis Stone).

Ruby Princess' last drydock refurbishment was in 2023 (September 24 through October 22) conducted at Vigor Shipyard in Portland Oregon USA . The 1-month drydocking was mainly for regularly scheduled maintenance and classification works, including a technical overhaul.

Ruby Cruise Cancelled due to Dry Dock

Cool Cruiser

My October 10 Pacific Coastal cruise was cancelled due to dry dock to enhance medallion system.  Truthfully, I was relieved as I now have a work meeting at the same time.  I had booked it as a casino cruise (rebooked from a cancelled cruise) and hope to book again.  Does anyone have any insight into how many cruises were cancelled as it might give us some insight into the true re-start of cruising?  Yes, this Pollyanna is still hoping for restart this year.....LOL.

No clue here, and I'm reading things that might have an impact on my Nov. Med cruise + TA.  Princess hasn't said anything . . . yet!   Athens port calendar has Enchanted doing 7 days cruises from there.

Thinking I should just concentrate on my 2022 Cali coastal cruises, forget going overseas this Fall.

Probably so.  I got an email about this cancellation.  Can’t find any public listing of affected cruises.  I think it is ‘interesting’ that this round of cancellations was done so quietly.....

Thanks

I guess that means that the Ruby cruises in July, August and September may be cancelled as well, unless they just switch boats that are medallion ready.

Here you are. The drydock period will last for 17 days, starting from Sep 30, in the shipyard in Portland.

Oct 5 and Oct 10 sailings are cancelled.

But Princess will also add two new cruises for Sep 18 and Sep 25. Seems they are confident that US departures will be allowed by CDC in September.

I think I read the governor of CA announced all would be back to normal by the 15th of July or somewhere near that date. Of course the author of the same article wondered just how the governor knows things will be good by then. Anyway, that may have some influence on the port's status.

I believe that it was related to the announcement that California would be opening up and dropping state ordered restrictions on June 15.

No one knows yet, but every US port is being affected.

Yes, that's the announcement I remember! Hey, in geologic time June 15 and July 15 are the same. Isn't that the same clock the CDC is using? 😁

Hey @Cruise Wonderland ! Do you know of any other dry docks in the fleet this year? Princess is very comparably low-key with their news, so it'd be nice to anticipate anything. Thanks!

charlie murphy

"Back to normal" is a Relative term with a wide girth for internpentation, unless in opposition in which case the there is very little wiggle room, in the republic of California

The CDC's clock broke last March, and they can't afford to fix it. They are an embarrassment.

Haha

Sorry I do not have further information. If there are drydock works to be done in the next 1-2 months in summer (before the ship will be back in service), I don't think Princess will announce it in advance, since this won't involve any cancellation of cruises (and thus won't affect any booked passengers).

Question how long does it take to drive into SF from Burlingame  ?  TIA for your reply

Hey it used to take me an hour to go from SF home downtown. Now it takes an hour to go from my suburb home to SF downtown!! Of course in SF I'd take the M. I suggest visitors just stay in Marina or near Embarcadero and walk.

Could be as little as 1/2 hour to Herbst Theater then search for parking / could be as much as an hour to just get from 280 (Outer Mission) to Embarcadero

They all have medallions but at least some need to have new actions added. Not sure exactly what they are

Replying to myself...

It also lists the medallion and non-medallion class ships.

Cruise Cancelled - How Long for Refund?

Westsail32

Cool Cruiser

I had a cruise booked this August on the Ruby Princess out of San Pedro.  About a month ago I received a notice from Princess they were cancelling all the Ruby sailings the rest of the year.  I selected the option for a refund as I already have another cruise booked in October. How long does it normally take Princess to credit your credit card back the amount of the cancelled cruise?  I hate carrying $2k in balance (and interest).

It took us almost 2 months before we saw a refund on one of our many cancellations...

I do not have a definitive answer, but we had a Sep 18 Ruby cancelled and Credit Card refund was posted July 1st.

As it happens we did not ask for a refund, preferred a Replacement and the final date to chose Refund/FCC/Replace was July 17. What action did you take ? We have asked our TA to sort this out because replacement would cost more than cancelled.

I thought it would be after July 17 before Princess would start processing Refund/FCC/Replace.

Standard Policy for Guest Cancellations, Refunds & Final Payment

Learn about our standard cancellation policy and refund schedule.

In the case that you need to cancel your cruise vacation, you may be charged a fee based on the standard Princess Cruises cancellation policy. The amount will depend on the length of your itinerary and how far in advance of your departure date that you cancel. Use the charts below to determine your refund.

If you’ve already purchased  Princess Vacation Protection † , your refunds for covered cancellation reasons will continue to be governed by Princess Vacation Protection. Please review the plan coverage, conditions and exclusions for full details. We highly recommend that guests purchase Princess Vacation Protection – not only does it provide some peace of mind for unexpected cancellations, it also offers partial reimbursements for trip delays or interruptions, lost or damaged baggage and medical coverage.

†Princess Vacation Protection is available to residents of the U.S. and Canada (except New York, British Columbia, Quebec and Puerto Rico). Guests in other regions may have alternative coverage options and can refer to our  FAQs  for additional information.

Refund Schedules & Final Payment Due Date

For booked guests, please review your booking confirmation email which contains the cancellation schedule and final payment terms that apply to you. For full details and booking conditions, please also refer to the  passage contract .

Since a cancellation by you likely means a diminished opportunity to sell space on other cruises/cruisetours, the cancellation fees in the schedules below apply regardless of whether Your space is resold. You hereby agree that losses sustained by us in the event of Your cancellation would be very difficult or impossible to quantify, and that the fees set forth in our cancellation policy represent a fair and reasonable assessment as liquidated damages. The amount of cancellation fee varies based on length of sailing for cruise/cruisetour and timing of cancellation for cruise/cruisetour and Cruise Plus package, as illustrated in the schedules below.

CANCELLATION POLICY EXCEPTION(S): A. If You have purchased a specially priced promotion where the deposit is 100% non-refundable from the point of payment, You are not entitled to any refund, payment, compensation or credit whatsoever of Your deposit under any circumstance if you cancel Your booking.

B. If you have purchased a specially priced promotion that is 100% non-refundable from the point of payment, You are not entitled to any refund, payment, compensation or credit whatsoever of Your Cruise or Cruisetour fare if You cancel Your booking.

Shore Excursion Cancellation Policy: For complete details on the terms and conditions governing Shore Excursions, please review Carrier’s  Excursion Terms & Conditions .
