Latest iOS 15 beta fixes the Safari address bar and lets you move it back to the top

A return to a more traditional design.

safari address bar problem

Apple has updated Safari’s design in the latest iOS 15 beta (Developer Beta 6), making the address bar look and act more like what users are used to and giving you the option to put it at either the top or bottom of the screen. Safari’s redesign, especially on iPhones, has been controversial since it was first announced , but it seems like Apple is starting to walk back the floating design that’s persisted throughout the beta.

MacStories founder and podcaster Federico Viticci has posted screenshots of the new design on Twitter, showing off the changes. If the user chooses to have the address bar on the bottom, it sits above a row of controls, including back and forward buttons, a share button, and the tab button. (In previous versions of the beta, these buttons were one with the address bar.) If the user chooses the option to have the address bar at the top, Safari will look similar to how it did in iOS 14.

For comparison, this is Safari’s UI in the previous beta.

Apple has been tweaking and changing Safari’s new design since it made its debut in the first beta. The updates have been relatively small — buttons were added back into the address bar (making it a minefield of touch targets), and Apple made the address bar easier to get to when you’re typing in a URL or search term . However, the incremental updates haven’t appeased those calling for a return to a more traditional design, one that doesn’t include a floating element that hovers above a webpage’s content.

Options should help please those who (kind of) liked the change, and those who didn’t

The option to change where the address bar resides should please those who thought its new place at the bottom was a good one (regardless of how its actual design was executed), as well as those who prefer to have it at the top. It may make things tough for web designers, who will have to deal with the possibility of something butting up against either the top or bottom of their webpage, but it’s a nice option for users to have.

According to Viticci , the iPad version of Safari hasn’t changed with this update, though Apple introduced an option that more or less let you go back to a traditional design in Beta 4.

iOS 17: How to Move Safari Address Bar on iPhone Explained

Moving the Safari address bar on your iPhone with iOS 17 is a simple process. Just head to your Settings, tap Safari, and under the ‘Tabs’ section, select ‘Single Tab’ to move the address bar to the top, or ‘Tab Bar’ to keep it at the bottom. Easy-peasy, right?

After you complete the action, the Safari address bar will be displayed in your preferred location, either at the top or bottom of the screen, depending on your selection. This small change can significantly impact how you interact with your browser and navigate the web on your iPhone.

You can also watch this video about how to move Safari address bar on iPhone for more on this topic.

An Introduction to Safari Address Bar Customization

Ever since Apple introduced the option to customize the placement of the Safari address bar in iOS 15, users have had mixed feelings. Some love the new, more reachable bottom address bar, while others yearn for the traditional top placement. Fast forward to iOS 17, and the debate continues. But here’s the good news: Apple has given you the power to choose. With a few taps, you can customize your browsing experience to suit your preference. But why is this such a big deal?

Well, it’s all about usability and comfort. The placement of the address bar can affect how easily you can navigate your phone, especially with one hand. And let’s face it, in the age of large-screen smartphones, convenience is king. Whether you’re a devoted Apple user or just someone trying to navigate your iPhone more efficiently, this feature is designed to enhance your overall user experience. So, let’s dive into the steps and explore the pros and cons of this nifty feature.

Step by Step Tutorial to Move Safari Address Bar on iPhone

First, let’s go over what we’ll accomplish in the following steps. We’ll be tweaking a setting in the Safari section of your iPhone’s settings. This will allow you to move the address bar from its default bottom position to the top of the screen.

Step 1: Open Settings

  • Open the ‘Settings’ app on your iPhone.

When you open Settings, you’ll find a list of options to customize various aspects of your iPhone. For our purpose, you’ll need to scroll down to find ‘Safari’, nestled among other default apps.

Step 2: Tap Safari

Scroll down and tap on ‘Safari’ to open the browser’s settings.

In the Safari settings, you’ll see a variety of options that allow you to tweak your browsing experience. Look for the section named ‘Tabs’.

Step 3: Choose Your Preferred Option

  • Under ‘Tabs’, select ‘Single Tab’ to move the address bar to the top, or ‘Tab Bar’ to keep it at the bottom.

The ‘Single Tab’ option will give you the traditional look with the address bar at the top, similar to how it is on a desktop browser. The ‘Tab Bar’ option will maintain the new design introduced in iOS 15, with the address bar at the bottom of the screen.

Additional Information

While the steps above are pretty straightforward, there are a few additional things you might want to consider. For instance, if you’re someone who frequently switches between different iOS devices, like an iPad and an iPhone, you may want to keep the address bar placement consistent across devices for a seamless transition. Also, remember that the placement of the address bar can affect how you interact with the rest of the Safari interface.

For example, if the address bar is at the bottom, it’s easier to swipe between tabs with your thumb. That’s something to consider if you’re an avid tab swiper. It’s also worth noting that the iOS 17 update might bring along other interface changes, so keep an eye out for those when you’re customizing your Safari settings. Lastly, don’t be afraid to experiment with both options for a week or so to really figure out which placement you prefer. And hey, you might even discover a new, more efficient way to browse!

  • Scroll down and tap on ‘Safari’.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing the address bar position affect other apps.

No, this change only affects Safari and not any other apps on your iPhone.

Can I move the address bar to the sides?

No, the address bar can only be moved to the top or bottom of the screen.

Will this setting sync across my Apple devices?

No, this setting is specific to each device. You’ll need to set your preference on each device individually.

Is there a shortcut to switch between the top and bottom address bar?

No, you have to go into Settings each time you want to switch the address bar position.

If I update to iOS 17, will my address bar move automatically?

No, the address bar will stay in its current position unless you manually change it in the settings.

With iOS 17, the ability to move the Safari address bar is a subtle yet impactful customization feature. Whether you prefer the traditional top placement or the newer bottom placement, the choice is yours, and it’s all about making your browsing experience as comfortable and efficient as possible.

So go ahead and give it a try—you might just find a new preferred way to surf the web on your iPhone. Remember, the key is to find what works best for you and enjoy the ride on the information superhighway.

Safari address bar disappears all the time

something that annoys me, the address bar on Safari keeps on disappearing when I quit and re-open Safari, on default. In fact, when I open a new tab it does the same. Not sure why it does it, i have tried customising toolbar and adding address bar there again.

I had the same problem with Safari over the past several months. The toolbar (which includes address bar, google search, buttons, etc) was hidden almost every time I relaunched Safari even though the toolbar is visible before quitting (I manually select show toolbar in the View menu). I tried resetting the default in the customize toolbar option. I trashed the prefs. I even trashed Safari and its library then reinstalled a fresh copy. The toolbar still remained hidden most of the time unless I manually request it to be shown with the "View.." menu item (and then would be hidden on next relaunch).

Now, finally!, I think I found the solution. With the toolbar visible (select show toolbar in View menu), hold the right button over the toolbar area so a contextual menu is shown. Select "Keep visible" in that menu.

Looks like this is a semi-bug in Safari, folks. If the user selects the toolbar to be visible by default using the customize menu, then the toolbar should be kept visible. For some of us, that isn't happening unless we also select the "Keep Visible" in the contextual menu for the toolbar.

EDIT (next day): Sorry for the above. Still having a problem with a disappearing toolbar. Unless I'm missing a hidden button somewhere, looks like this might be a full-blown Safari flaw that affects only some people. Maybe a toolbar-less auto window that popped up in the past permanently changed Safari's internals that users can't alter back again?

  • true im testing it out now will let you know if it re-appears. maybe a complette deletion of safari and its plugins? –  Doz Mar 24, 2010 at 5:59

How do you make it show? If it is hidden then using Command-L will only temporarily show it until you press Return.

What if you hit Command-| ( pipe , so probably Command-Shift-\ ) or use menu View, Show Toolbar, and then restart Safari right away?

Arjan's user avatar

  • No that seemed to work, just command shift \ –  Doz Jan 13, 2010 at 2:14
  • Hiya, no its not working sorry been out for a while. Basically, command-shift-\ brings up address bar, but this setting keeps on resetting when you restart safari. –  Doz Jan 17, 2010 at 3:17

Typically I have seen this when a web site overrides, and hides the toolbar. Safari seems to save the window settings of the last window closed, when you quit it.

So, try this.

  • Open Safari
  • Edit --> Show Toolbar

Quit Safari

Restart Safari

And let us know what happens.

How to Set Safari's Address Bar to the Top or Bottom of the Screen

During the beta phase of iOS 15, Apple added a new Safari design element that moves the URL and tab interface to the bottom of the screen, a decision that was immediately controversial with iPhone users.

iOs 15 Safari Feature

If you can't get on with the address bar living at the bottom of the screen and would prefer to have it in its original position at the top, like it was in iOS 14, follow these steps.

  • Launch Safari on your ‌iPhone‌.
  • Tap the " aA " icon in the left side of the address bar.
  • Tap Show Top Address Bar in the popup menu.

The Safari Settings You Should Tweak Right Now

macbook pro with macOS catalina on the screen

Your browser is your window onto the world, the app you rely on most during the day. You want to wring every last drop of usefulness out of it. It definitely pays to know all of the features and tricks your daily browser is capable of. For iOS users, that means mastering Safari: how to stay safe online, how to get stuff done faster, and more.

For a smoother online experience, take a few minutes to run through these Safari tweaks to make your life online a little smoother.

Safari is very concerned about the strength of your passwords—perhaps even more so than you are. To see whether you're using any weak passwords, or duplicating passwords across accounts, open the Safari menu and choose Preferences then Passwords . A yellow exclamation mark indicates a potential problem with one of your listed passwords.

You'll often want to carry on watching a video while doing something else, and Safari can help—with a video playing, click and hold the audio icon in the address bar, then choose Enter Picture in Picture . The pop-out video player can be repositioned and resized as needed, but keep the original tab open in the background while you work on other tasks.

Websites want a lot these days: access to your webcam, your mic, your location , and more. To check what a site does and does not have access to, click Safari then Settings for This Website . You can revoke any permissions you've previously given, stop content from auto-playing, and limit the number of pop-up windows that the website can show.

screenshot

It's taken a long time for Safari to support favicons (the little icons that represent websites), so you might as well take advantage; they also help you identify open tabs more easily as well. From the Safari menu, choose Preferences then Tabs , and then tick the checkbox labeled Show website icons in tabs to apply the change to the browser.

Having access to your recent browsing history can be useful for retracing your online steps, but you don't need it to follow you around for years. Open Safari then Preferences , switch to the General tab, then open Remove history items —you can delete browsing logs automatically after a day, week, fortnight, month, or year.

By default Safari just shows the domain name of the site you're visiting in the address bar, but this can make it tricky to work out exactly where you are on the web. To see the full URL instead, you need to open up the Safari menu, then the Preferences dialog, then switch to the Advanced tab—make sure the Show full website address box is ticked.

Image may contain File Text and Webpage

No productivity hack is ever going to beat an intuitive keyboard shortcut or two. You'll find a full list for Safari here and here , but some of our favorites include Space (and Shift+Space ) to scroll, Cmd+W to close a tab, Ctrl+Tab (and Shift+Ctrl+Tab ) to scroll through open tabs, and Cmd+L to jump straight to the Safari address bar at the top.

Safari, like every other Apple app, can be fully controlled with your voice in macOS Catalina. To enable the feature, open the Apple menu then choose System Preferences , Accessibility , Voice Control , and Enable Voice Control . It lets you speak out numbers for menus and links, zoom in and out, and much more—there's a full list of commands here .

screenshot

Safari has an entire Develop menu that's not displayed by default but which is very handy for power users. To show it, open the Safari menu then choose Preferences , then Advanced , then tick the box marked Show Develop menu in menu bar. The new menu then appears, enabling you to access options such as disabling images or extensions.

Clearing out a browser's cache can often improve performance in the long term, even if it takes a short-term hit while local files are refreshed and reset. To do this in Safari, you first need to enable the Develop menu (see the step above), then you can open it and choose Empty Caches . This wipes all of Safari's temporary files and data off the local disk.

Safari has borrowed a very useful feature from Windows: the ability to "snap" open tabs to the left or right of the screen, so you can compare two side-by-side. Open up the Window menu, then choose Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen to do just that—your other windows are then automatically docked on the opposite side.

screenshot

Apple devices all play wonderfully well together, as long as you're signed in on the same Apple ID, and jumping between open tabs on different devices is a breeze. To do this on Safari on macOS, you need to click on the Show tab overview button in the top right corner; you'll then see Safari tabs from your other devices listed lower down.

Who has time to read everything during the working day? No one! So make use of Safari's built-in Reading List tool. Use the Plus button on the left side of the address bar to add articles to the Reading List, then click the Show sidebar button (or View and Show Reading List Sidebar ) to bring up the list of all the posts you've saved during the day.

Safari gives you more control than you might have realized over the buttons and options that appear on the toolbar—having the tools you use most often in easy reach can make a big difference to your online productivity. To make changes, select View then Customize Toolbar , then just drag and drop the icons you need most often into the toolbar.

The ever-moving Safari address bar in macOS Monterey is user-hostile and needs a rethink

Macos Moving Address Bar

When Apple releases macOS Monterey this fall it's going to bring with it some great improvements. New FaceTime features like SharePlay will change the game, while new microphone modes will make it easier for people to hear you on video calls. But there's one change that, based on my testing, needs some work.

That feature is Safari's new minimalist address bar because boy is it a whole thing right now.

The thinking behind the new "streamlined address bar" is pretty simple. Apple moved some buttons around, hid some behind a menu – including the refresh button – and then moved the tabs to the same area as the URL entry field. And that, right there, is the problem.

It sounds like a relatively good idea in theory, but it soon falls apart in practice. That said, I'll preface all of this with a disclaimer. This is a beta and it's beta 1 at that. Things can and will change. But this is a feature that's on Apple's macOS preview page so I don't expect it to go away completely. The best we can hope for now is that things improve before the fall release is upon us. You can dive into plist land and get the old tab bar back. But that isn't a proper fix for most people.

Now, the issue at hand. The problem isn't that the tabs are now on the same level as the address bar as such. Rather, it's that the tabs affect where the address bar lives. It moves around depending on which tab is active and if you have more than a couple of tabs open at once that address bar can move from far left to far right in one click. It's simultaneously everywhere and nowhere. And you're always chasing it.

It isn't just me, either.

Safari 15 gripe: I keep closing tabs unintentionally because the tab/url bar keeps shifting around pic.twitter.com/Xr0v9ceSYb Safari 15 gripe: I keep closing tabs unintentionally because the tab/url bar keeps shifting around pic.twitter.com/Xr0v9ceSYb — ؜ (@jkspn) June 17, 2021 June 17, 2021

There are other problems with this whole idea that Mark Gurman outlined in a tweet and I've embedded that below. But never knowing where my address bar is, or where I should click to enter a new URL, or where my tabs have gone isn't any fun at all. That, to me, is just bad design. Things we interact with a ton shouldn't move around as much as tabs and the address bar do right now.

It isn’t just moved, it’s movING. It’s all over the place depending on which tab you select. https://t.co/5wJazNro3a It isn’t just moved, it’s movING. It’s all over the place depending on which tab you select. https://t.co/5wJazNro3a — Oliver Haslam (@OliverJHaslam) June 18, 2021 June 18, 2021

Again, and before someone reminds me in the comments – I know this is a beta. But without feedback things like this won't get better.

How would I fix it? I'm no designer and I've never built a web browser in my life, but I don't think the address bar needs to move at all – just put the tabs either side of it if that's something you really want to do. Yes, it'd mean your current tab would always be in the center of the window and that isn't quite how Safari has historically behaved – but is that a bad thing? I think it might work and you'd always know where to click to enter a new URL or copy the current one out.

I've no doubt that the people working on Safari are super talented and they make what is, to me, the best browser on the planet. But this needs a rethink or, at the very least, a checkbox that disables the new address bar completely.

How to Fix Search Not Working on Apple Safari

Authored by: Support.com Tech Pro Team

1. Introduction

Searching the web is something we do every day. Whether you are searching from Safari's address bar, or have its homepage set to take you to your favorite search engine's website instead, you've likely gotten accustomed to the way you search on a daily basis. If that search experience has suddenly changed seemingly without warning, that's a clear sign that something is messing with Safari's settings without your knowledge or consent. This guide will help you make sure that Safari on your Mac is configured properly so that your search experience returns to normal once again.

Tools You'll Need:

3. Remove Problematic Extensions

Extensions provide extra features to Safari. Sometimes, these Extensions are not coded well, break after an update, or they change the way Safari works in a malicious way to show you advertisements.

Disabling or removing unneeded or unwanted Extensions can help resolve these problems.

Some pop-ups are created from extensions/add-ons installed on your browser. We will be going over steps to remove the extension.

  • From the Safari menu, choose Preferences .

  • The following steps can be repeated to remove multiple browser extensions.
  • Click the Extensions  tab. Click on Uninstall  for any extensions you want to remove.

  • You will get a confirmation window.  Click on Uninstall to confirm removal.

  • If a new tab opens up, you can close it by hitting the X .
  • Extensions are now gone, you may have to restart your browser for it to take effect. If you removed a malicious extension, it might have changed your homepage.

4. Remove Potentially Unwanted Programs

Potentially unwanted programs, or "PUPs", often arrive bundled with your computer or can tag along with another software program you meant to install. Most times, they are snuck into the EULA as a "Recommended Offer" that many of us are so accustomed to just click right through. Lots of these types of programs end up being junkware that your computer will not benefit from. Unfortunately, some of these programs can add unwanted browser toolbars or extensions that can clutter your browser, track your web browsing, show additional advertisements, or change your search page and other related settings. Usually, unless these types of programs are removed, they will continue causing issues with your web browsing experience.

Example of a PUP installing a search bar

Removing an app may also remove all data for that app. Make sure you have any information you need backed up before removing an app for your Mac.

Remove apps installed from the App Store

  • Open the Launchpad from the dock.

Launchpad highlighted

  • Click and hold on an icon until all icons start to jiggle.

Shaking icon

  • Click the " x " on the top left of the icon you want to remove.

X highlighted

  • Click Delete to confirm removal.

Remove apps via Finder

  • Open the Finder from the dock.

  • Click on Applications on the left.

  • Drag the app you wish to remove to the Trash Bin .

Drag app to the trashcan

  • Right click on the trashcan and click Empty Trash .

Test your browser after removing any PUPs from your machine. This may require you to restart your browser or your computer beforehand depending on what was removed.

5. Verify Safari Homepage Settings

If your search experience hasn't returned to normal, the next step is to verify that Safari's homepage settings are where they should be in order to provide you with the search experience you're familiar with. If any settings were previously 'hijacked' by a malicious extension and were not reverted back to what they were originally set to, your search experience may still not be right.

Your web browser's homepage settings dictate the website that is loaded when it is opened up.

  • Open Safari .
  • From the (1)  Safari  menu, choose (2)  Preferences .

Safari with Safari menu and Preferences highlighted. Screenshot

  • Click on the  General  (1) tab, then ensure that the  Homepage  (2) is set to the website you would like Safari to load when it is first opened.

6. Try Your Search Page Again

  • Test things out to see if your search experience has returned to normal.
  • If your search experience is still abnormal, we recommend that your machine be professionally diagnosed to determine the root cause of the issue.

I lost the address bar in Safari Hello Everyone! I hope that someone can help me with this problem. I have been trying to figure it out for an hour. I lost the address bar in my Safari window. I was trying to change the home address, so I went under view to customize toolbar. I dragged the new address that I wanted into ..... "or drag the default set". This didn't work, and instead the whole address bar disappeared. Thanks for your help Sarah Swangstu

Missing address bar, and other things don't work.. I know this may sound really easy- but have you tried hovering over "view" and clicking the first option (which should be hide/show toolbar- it's the first things for me, and I'm running lion). It worked for me!

I have the same problem, but now in 2014 after upgrade to 10.10 simsaladimbamba, and others have some great advice here... but my safari will NOT put up a display choice of toolbars to 'drag' into the window. simsaladimbamba, excellent screen shot. That is what my screen looks like EXCEPT I cannot get the menu of tool bars to drag into the safari tool area.

If you don't have any type of "bar' across the top to click on and the menu command is not available, then I'd suggest deleting your com.apple.safari.plist file. Quit Safari. In Finder, hold down Option and click the Go menu. Select Library. Open the Preferences folder. Find the file mentioned above and delete it. Open Safari. If that didn't work, then I'd suggest you log in from a different User Account. If you only have one, you'll have to create a second one. In System Preferences, click Users and Groups. Click the padlock icon and enter your password. Click the + button and give the account a name. Leave it highlighted and close the window. Log out and back in. If this fixes the problem, then your other account is corrupt. Since deleting the Safari plist file didn't help, bringing you to this step, the chances of you finding what it is that needs to be fixed are pretty slim. Move your files to the new account. (Users/New Account Name/Documents) When you're sure everything is ok after several days or a few weeks, go back to System Preferences and delete the old account.

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.
