14 Best Safari Lodges in Western Cape

South Africa has some of the most unique and varied safari experiences, particularly the Western Cape. With rugged mountains and pristine bays, it’s the best region to see the “big five” and Africa’s wild animals. We’ll show you safari lodges at campsites, nature reserves, and game parks. You can choose from luxury suites, pool villas, family chalets, and glamping tents. Whether you’re traveling as a couple or a group, there’ll be a luxury lodge for you. But before we review each safari lodge, here are some quick recommendations.

Table of Contents

Most Luxurious Safari Lodge

safari in the western cape

Gondwana is one of the best luxury safari lodges in the Western Cape. They have the widest range of lodges available from eco-tented camps to bush villas, all superbly furnished. Compared to other lodges, they have much more facilities including a pool, lounge, dining, and bush spa. Besides seeing the Big 5 on game drives, they also offer mountain biking, bird watching, and nature walks. Customized itineraries can be arranged if you want a personalized experience.

Best Safari Lodge Near Cape Town

Most of the Western Cape safari lodges are very remote. If you want to stay close to Cape Town, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is the best option. It’s less than a 2-hour drive from Cape Town, however, we’d highly recommend taking the coastal route. Between Gordan’s Bay and Hermanus, you’ll have the most stunning ocean views. Stony Point in Betty’s Bay is a popular place to see African penguins. Harold Porter Botanical Garden nearby is also a beautiful landscape to explore. So while Grootbos is 2 hours from Cape Town, you might as well make a day of it with these lovely stops.

Best Safari Lodge To See Big 5

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is the largest privately owned safari park in South Africa. Size-wise it’s the closest experience in the Western Cape to the Kruger National Park. The reserve doesn’t allow day visitors or self-driving which means it’s less crowded and you get a certified ranger. At sunset or sunrise, they’ll take you on a 3 hours drive through the quartz fields of Karoo. Have your binoculars ready cause there’s a high chance you’ll see the big 5. Besides safaris, they have nature walks, bird watching, and stargazing. Accommodations include basic camping, family lodges, manor house suites, and luxury tents with heated plunge pools.

Best Safari Lodges For Families

safari in the western cape

  • Gondwana Game Reserve  – You’ll find the most luxurious range of 2-4 bedroom family villas here. But if you want the ultimate stay, have a look at Ulubisi House. It has 3 bedrooms and a private pool with stunning views. Plus you’ll have a private ranger, chef, and butler. Service will be world-class.
  • Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa – Not far from Cape Town, this lodge has something for everyone. It has an active kids club with mini golf, an adventure zone, playgrounds, and junior ranger programs for older children. Their best family accommodations are 2 and 3-bedroom cottages. The resort has a large pool, a spa for adults, a top-class restaurant, and game drives that can include horseback and quad bikes. Essentially, they have more family activities on offer compared to other safari lodges.

Safari Lodge For Couples

It’s hard to pick “the best” since all the safari lodges in the Western Cape are incredible. But if you’re looking for a unique experience on top of the game drives, here are a couple of options that stand out:

  • Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – This is one of the most highly-rated lodges in the Western Cape. Whether you stay in the Dwyka tented lodge or Tilney manor, you can expect complete luxury. Both have private bathtubs so you can relax after game drives.
  • Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve – With accommodation in caves, this is one of the more unique experiences. Make sure you book the Honeymoon cave to make the most of a romantic stay. They also offer customized packages for couples.

1. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Star-gazing the incredible Karoo sky at night is a bonus for all stays. As one of the more expensive safari lodges in the Western Cape, you get all the luxuries you pay for.

Gondwana Conservation Foundation

The Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF) has been established as a non-profit organization to contribute to the conservation of South Africa’s threatened and endangered species.

The four pillars of the GCF

• Endangered Wildlife The GCF’s habitat restoration and management activities, are fundamental to its conservation of key endangered species such as rhino, bontebok, Cape mountain zebra and cheetah in the Western Cape. The GCF are contributing to halting biodiversity loss, which is a key objective. • Endangered Vegetation The GCF’s work in restoring degraded habitats and implementing sustainable land management practices can contribute to the restoration of biodiversity for all ecosystems within the Cape Floristic Kingdom. The Cape Floristic Kingdom is the smallest and most critically endangered of all the floristic kingdoms and has been classified as world heritage site. • Social Impact The GCF’s focus on education and outreach, as well as its partnerships with local communities to engage and empower local communities in biodiversity conservation. The GCF’s approach to conservation recognizes the importance of ecosystem services for human well-being, and its conservation activities can contribute to enhancing these services.

• Biodiversity Restoration The GCF’s strategy can contribute to achieving the goals and objectives of addressing the underlying drivers of biodiversity loss, promoting habitat restoration and species conservation and integrating different sectors in biodiversity conservation efforts.

If you're going on safari in South Africa , the Western Cape might not feature too highly on your itinerary. This region is more about the finer things in life: food, wine, beaches and Cape Town — arguably the most beautiful city in Africa. For many, wildlife and safaris don’t really come into the equation.

However, if you know where to look, then the Western Cape does offer the chance to pull out a big camera lens and head out in search of elephants and lions. All the famed Big Five are present in this region although in most cases they’ve been re-introduced into fairly small, fenced private game reserves. These are not zoos, but they’re also not vast wilderness zones like the ones you might find elsewhere in Africa.

The reserves have their own upmarket lodges and camps. See the individual park websites for details. Both reserves are close enough to Cape Town to make day trips feasible if not entirely desirable — after all, the accommodation is a major part of the whole experience.

If all you’re looking for is a family-friendly, short safari experience that can be easily slotted into a wine tour or a Cape Town city break, then the Western Cape fits the bill.

Jackal in Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Western Cape safari reserves

Sanbona wildlife reserve, western cape.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Combine big cats with wine tasting, and you get the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

Sanbona is an exclusive private conservancy that’s been restocked with the big ticket animal attractions — lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos — and, thanks to the expert guides, all are regularly seen on safaris here. Covering more than 50,000 hectares, Sanbona is large enough to feel like a genuine wilderness, but at the same time is only a three-hour drive from Cape Town and lies close to the Western Cape’s famed wine lands. This means it’s easy to slip a Big Five safari into a wine tasting tour and a Cape Town city break.

Situated at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains in the Little Karoo, Sanbona offers three reserves with all the usual luxuries.

As well as standard vehicle safaris, I recommend joining an overnight walking safari and trying a bush camping experience. Look out for the 3,500-year-old rock art depicting people and animals left by the San and Khoikhoi tribes.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Named after the endangered black (Verreaux) eagle, Aquila is one of a number of small and rather stage-managed private reserves, a short drive from Cape Town. The 10,000-hectare conservancy was established back in 1999 and at the time was home to only a few antelope. Today, thanks to animal reintroduction and solid conservation programmes, Aquila Private Game Reserve is home to all of the Big Five as well as a significant number of other large mammals and birdlife.

It would be wrong to paint Aquila as a true African wilderness experience, but it can’t be faulted for quality wildlife viewing, which includes near guaranteed sightings of lions and all their friends and enemies, lots of alternative activities, easy access (you can visit on a day trip from Cape Town), and high-class accommodation.

Western Cape wildlife

Like the Eastern Cape, Western Cape contains many different habitats, and it supports a wide range of wildlife. This includes some massive marine life including some of the world’s biggest (and hungriest!) sharks. On dry land many of the larger native mammals were wiped out over the last couple of hundred years. However, today, thanks to reintroduction programmes in the region’s private game reserves, many of these animals are returning. It’s now possible to see most of the key big mammal species of South Africa here.

Western Cape is a wildlife-watching destination all year round, but try to avoid December and January which are busy tourist periods when accommodation prices rise significantly.

Tortoise in Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

While you’re in the Western Cape don’t miss a trip to Table Mountain (as if you would!) In addition to the great views over Cape Town, its distinctive shape, known as a “sky island”, is a botanical wonderland. The plant life here is primarily fynbos, a type of shrubland that is unique to the region. There are more than 1,500 species that are found only on Table Mountain and nearby Black Table and are protected by World Heritage Site status.

WELCOME TO BUFFELSFONTEIN

Situated in the heart of the West Coast, an hour away from Cape Town, you’ll find Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve. This 1600 ha family owned reserve is home to some of Africa’s greats such as Lion, Buffalo, White Rhino and Giraffe. Visitors can either enjoy an unforgettable guided game drive, a delicious meal, a good night’s rest or a team building/conference that will keep everyone talking for years to come.

“Friendly Game Reserve Close to Cape Town.”

This trip was our first experience of SA Game Reserves and we didn’t know what to expect. To cover the bases we booked one night at Buffelsfontein and one night a high price reserve. Both had their good points, but we both enjoyed Buffelsfontein more as it was more “rustic” and felt less insulated from nature. The staff were very friendly, and the ranger Willie was very helpful and knowledgeable about the many animals we saw on both game drives. We saw a wide variety of animals, and loved the giraffes, rhinos, cheetah and caracal.

safari in the western cape

Any reference to South Africa’s Cape region is almost guaranteed to bring to mind the famous mountains, glorious coastlines, and spectacular seaside scenery (also wine for the oenophiles). Yet inland from the sandy beaches and coastal forests lies a mosaic of fascinating habitats and protected spaces offering unique wildlife viewing. While South Africa’s safari circuit is dominated mainly by reserves in the northern and eastern parts of the country, the Cape safari experience is fundamentally different but equally enthralling.

safari in the western cape

The Cape nature experience – the Western and Eastern Cape

In the previous stories of our Cape series, we focussed in greater detail on the wonders of Cape Town and the Garden Route , including the natural marvels in and around these areas. This third instalment zooms in on the various wilderness areas in the greater Cape region – specifically within the Western and Eastern Cape. These two adjacent provinces make up the south-western corner of South Africa.  Together they encompass the entire Cape Floristic biome and most of the Karoo ecosystems right up to the transition with the grasslands of the Lesotho Highlands. Away from the lush greenery fed by temperate ocean climates and sheltered by a network of mountains, the landscape becomes progressively more arid and sparse, giving way to the almost Martian scenery of the Great Karoo.

safari in the western cape

It is important to note at the outset that while this story focuses on the more “traditional” safari experience complete with iconic, large wildlife, the entire inland Cape region is a paradise for the enthusiastic naturalist. From ancient fossils to rock art and dramatic landscapes to intriguing critters in unusual settings, the variety of habitats and animals on offer are guaranteed to captivate and delight.

For the most part, the Cape safari experience is an exclusive one, based around vast swathes of privately-owned wilderness areas peppered with a combination of basic and high-end lodges. For those more accustomed to the conventional savanna setting, there is something vaguely incongruous about the sight of an elephant against the austere backdrop of mountains and sparse karoo vegetation or the Indian Ocean in the background.  Yet, there was a time when the ‘Big 5’ (and many other species) roamed throughout the entire Cape region. Over centuries, they have been driven to the verge of extinction by human encroachment, unsustainable hunting practices and human-wildlife conflict. Fortunately, many of the private reserves of the Cape now boast an impressive conservation record and have served a pivotal role in restoring the magnificent creatures of the Cape to their rightful home. As a malaria-free destination, this is also one of the best safari options for families travelling with children.

Eastern Cape – the greater Addo ecosystem

safari in the western cape

Addo Elephant National Park

As South Africa’s third-largest national park, Addo Elephant National Park covers 1,640km² (164,000 hectares) of Eastern Cape bushveld not far from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Recent years have seen the park expanding to include the Woody Cape Nature Reserve, the Alexandria dune field and a marine portion extending to St. Croix Island and Bird Island. This expansion made Addo the only place in Africa where visitors can see the ‘Big 7’ – the ‘Big 5’ plus dolphins and whales.

As the name suggests, Addo is famous for its elephants. By the early 20th century, nearly every elephant in the Southern Cape had been slaughtered. Addo was established to safeguard the remaining few, then numbering fewer than thirty. Today, Addo is home to well over 600 elephants. Interestingly, nearly all females are tuskless, and bulls have been brought in from other areas to improve the population’s genetic diversity.

Elephants aside, Addo covers five of the country’s eight vegetation zones (Albany thicket, fynbos, Nama karoo, forest, and Indian Ocean Coastal Belt), and the biodiversity is staggering. Not only do the remaining ‘Big 5’ find sanctuary here, but a host of other creatures too. This list includes a flightless dung beetle that is of particular interest to those with an eye for the smaller, fascinating creatures of the region.

With its exceptional variety and fantastic elephant sightings, Addo is an essential stop for any Cape safari.

Cape safari

Amakhala Game Reserve

The 85km² (8,500 hectares) Amakhala Game Reserve features all of the scenic beauty and wildlife magnificence of Addo, with the added advantage that access is exclusively granted to guests of the various lodges. With awe-inspiring views, relaxed wildlife and a variety of accommodation options to suit most budgets, Amakhala epitomises the appeal of the Eastern Cape safari adventure.

Cape safari

Kariega Private Game Reserve

Another major destination on the Eastern Cape safari circuit, Kariega Private Game Reserve is a family-owned and operated 100km² (10,000 hectares) reserve. It is ideally positioned between the Bushman’s and Kariega Rivers, not far from the Sunshine Coast, and boasts a diverse range of habitats and glorious vistas.

The lush rolling hills are home to the ‘Big 5’, antelopes and myriad bird species. Visitors can opt to complement the traditional game drives with boat cruises and walking trails. Of particular interest to many of Kariega’s guests is Thandi – a white rhino cow that survived a brutal poaching attempt in 2012. Despite horrific injuries, Thandi went on to make a full recovery and, to date, has given birth to four calves (and has one grand calf).

Cape safari

Lalibela Game Reserve

Recently rejuvenated, Lalibela Game Reserve offers an exclusive bush experience not far from Addo Elephant National Park. The reserve is 100km2 (10,000 hectares), and access is exclusive to guests of the lodges. Lalibela shares a similar setting with Addo, with the added advantage that there are substantial areas of open savanna grassland where herds of zebra, red hartebeest, wildebeest and blesbok congregate.

As is the case for many of the reserves in the area, Lalibela is a vital habitat for South Africa’s national bird, the striking and endangered blue crane.

safari in the western cape

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

A private reserve with a proud record of rehabilitation from farmland to restored wilderness, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve straddles the Great Fish River and covers a total area of 580km² (58,000 hectares). This region of the Eastern Cape is topographically dramatic, picturesque and boasts high levels of biodiversity.

safari in the western cape

Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is probably one of the best-known private reserves in the Cape region and one of the most upmarket on this list. Offering the quintessential safari experience (and checklist), this 250km² (25,000 hectares) award-winning reserve has an impressive conservation record. Situated just 75km from Gqeberha, it shares many habitat similarities with Addo Elephant National Park. It is also home to the ‘Big 5’ and cheetah, with the added bonus of regular and reliable leopard sightings.

The reserve is also home to a wildlife rehabilitation centre, which is open for tourists to visit for an educational experience. No interaction with the animals is permitted, and the end goal is to release the animals back into the wild whenever possible.

Eastern Cape – Karoo safaris

safari in the western cape

Camdeboo National Park

Wrapped around the quaint town of Graaff-Reinet is the 194km² (19,400 hectares) Camdeboo National Park in the heart of the Karoo. The gorgeous scenery, with ancient dolerite columns looking out over the Valley of Desolation, is the main attraction here. Don’t be fooled by the name because arid though the area may be, it still teems with life. Shy buffalo are the only representatives of the ‘Big 5’, and antelope and zebra abound, as do endlessly entertaining meerkats that call the park home.

However, the Camdeboo experience is mainly about escaping into nature and revelling in the scenery on display, as the shifting clouds and setting sun transforms the rocks through myriad shades of red.

Cape safari

Samara Karoo Reserve

After a couple of days spent enjoying the surroundings of Camdeboo, visitors with a hankering for a safari experience can travel to nearby Samara Karoo Reserve. Gradually assembled from a total of 11 farms, Samara is restoring a patch of wilderness and bringing wildlife back. The reserve now covers 283km² (28,300 hectares) in the Great Karoo, treating visitors to fantastic wildlife sightings and glorious views.

Even at its busiest, Samara only allows for a limited number of guests, making the experience extremely exclusive. Guests can expect sightings of white and black rhinos, elephants, lions, and herds of springbok, but tracking cheetah on foot is one of the reserve’s particular highlights.

For more on Samara’s restoration, see Samara-Rewilding the Great Karoo

Cape safari

Mountain Zebra National Park

Situated further inland near the town of Cradock, Mountain Zebra National Park was initially established to save the Cape mountain zebra – a subspecies of mountain zebra that was threatened with extinction during the early 20th century. It straddles the transition between Nama Karoo, Albany thicket and the grassland habitats of the central plateau. The park now extends over 284km² (28,400 hectares) and is a population stronghold for the still vulnerable Cape mountain zebras, which at last count numbered around 700. Small herds are regularly relocated to other reserves to restore this zebra to its former range.

In addition to the park’s namesake animal, further introductions have seen the arrival of black rhinos, cheetahs, brown hyenas and lions that now roam the craggy hills of the park. Away from the scrublands of the Karoo, Mountain Zebra is primarily grassland and open savanna, offering unimpeded views of the wildlife, including herds of springbok, black wildebeest, and gemsbok. In the long term, there are plans to link Mountain Zebra with Camdeboo, creating a massive conservation area.

Gondwana Game Reserve

Situated along Garden Route not far from Mossel Bay, the 110km² (11,000 hectares) Gondwana Game Reserve was the first of its kind in the southern Cape region and is a fully free-roaming ‘Big 5’ region in the Western Cape. Once used for livestock farming, the land is being restored, and today wildlife abounds. Crucially, Gondwana boasts large areas of fynbos, many species of which are either endangered or critically endangered. In addition to the Big 5, cheetahs stalk through the fynbos and the reserve is also populated by herds of eland, bontebok, giraffe, and zebra.

Against the backdrop of the Langeberg and Outeniqua Mountains, visitors can explore on a game drive, mountain bike or hike on foot with a guide. The particularly adventurous can set off on a three-night trek through the reserve with overnight stays at fly camps along the route.

Cape safari

Karoo National Park

The state-run Karoo National Park covers 750km² (75,000 hectares) of arid and inhospitable-looking Great Karoo terrain. A portion of South Africa’s Great Escarpment (a prominent topographical massif that runs almost the entire width of the country) divides the park into lower and upper sections.

Originally known simply as a convenient stopover for people travelling to or from Cape Town, Karoo National Park has evolved to become the perfect escape for those looking to detox from city life without having to pay ultra-luxury prices. Harsh though the environment may seem, the park has gone from conservation strength to strength. It is now home to black rhinos and lions and an assortment of other rare and critically endangered creatures like the Cape mountain zebra and the riverine rabbit (one of the most endangered mammals in the world). Verreaux’s eagles nest on the dramatic cliff faces, and a small herd of Rau Quagga (a form of plains zebra back-bred to resemble the extinct quagga) was recently introduced to the reserve.

safari in the western cape

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

In the heart of the Klein Karoo, at the base of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, lies the 580km² (58,000 hectares) Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned reserves. Like the rest of the Karoo, ancient and more recent history is everywhere, including San rock art over 3,500 years old beneath rocky overhangs overlooking breath-taking views. Like many of the other reserves in the Cape area, Sanbona was once farmland, but intensive rehabilitation has restored the land to its former glory, as evidenced by the flourishing wildlife.

The’ Big 5′ are all present, as are cheetahs and brown hyenas, and sightings are made more impressive by the backdrop of magnificent scenery. From guided walks to boat safaris and stargazing to curated children’s programmes, Sanbona has something to offer everyone.

Want to go on a Cape safari? To find lodges, search for our ready-made packages or get in touch with our travel team to arrange your safari, scroll down to after this story.

The Cape safari experience offers adventures that are refreshingly different to the more renowned safari destinations elsewhere in Africa. The weather is generally good throughout the year (though the reserves can get very cold during winter), and the scenery is alluring and presents the perfect backdrop for diverse wildlife sightings. The wilderness areas are easily accessible and malaria-free, and the entire safari can be easily combined with a tour of the Garden Route, Winelands or Cape Town.

Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

safari in the western cape

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective.

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered.

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.

Best Game Reserves – Western Cape | Safaris Near Cape Town

Matt Davison

The Western Cape is home to many of South Africa’s best and most recognizable tourist destinations. Similarly, the capital city of the province, Cape Town, offers many incredible experiences.

If looking for the ultimate game and wildlife adventures, you could be forgiven for being under the impression that Cape Town offers little. The truth, however, is that some of the country’s best and most noteworthy game parks and reserves are to be found near Cape Town.

These parks and reserves offer an extensive range of packages, some of which include incredible day trips from Cape Town .

What lies in the Western Cape, and specifically around the city of Cape Town, is a treasure of wildlife exploration and indulgence. The best of these are located near Cape Town, featuring everything that makes a great game reserve.

The Best Game Parks and Nature Reserves – Western Cape

Before we delve into our picks for the best game parks near Cape Town, for any visitor planning a truly African wildlife experience, it is important to know how a game park and game reserve are more alike than most would think.

african-elephants

In the Western Cape, much like the rest of South Africa, the best game parks are located within a more significant, inclusive game reserve. And nowhere are these reserves more loved and appreciated than in the southernmost points of South Africa.

For our list, we will be looking at the best and most extensive parks, some of which are to be found in vast reserves containing thousands of different animal, plant, and bird species (including the Big 5).

But what exactly makes a game park great? There are four essential components that, when blended well enough, become the difference between good and great:

  • The number of different animals there are to be viewed and appreciated within the park/reserve.
  • The quality and availability of accommodation within the park/reserve.
  • Other activities and attractions offered by the park/reserve and how they include the natural area and wildlife.
  • Where the park/reserve is located.

According to the International Whaling Commission, annual visits from southern right and humpback whales and the presence of enormous pods of dolphins all year-round provide amazing viewing opportunities from land and sea.

At least 37 species of whales and dolphins can be found in the waters of South Africa.

Whale watching has traditionally focused on the migratory routes of spectacular species. Boat-based whale and dolphin watching started in the early 1980s, with the government regulating and managing the industry in 1999.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience this season, here are some of the destinations where you can see the magnificent creatures:

Hermanus, Western Cape

Hermanus is South Africa’s whale watching capital. A whale festival is held every year in the town and attracts large numbers of visitors during whale watching season. The annual Hermanus Whale Festival is at the end of September.

The event features interactive exhibits educating people about marine life and conservation efforts, as well as live music, food trucks, art and craft stalls and a lively street parade.

During the whale watching season, a whale crier alerts watchers to the presence of whales by blowing on a kelp horn.

The guest houses face the ocean, their large windows designed to give you the best views possible. You can also learn interesting facts about these annual visitors at Hermanus’s Whale House Museum.

Consider a stay at the Misty Waves Boutique Hotel with breathtaking ocean views. Prices start from R1 785 a night for two.

Cape Town, Western Cape

Cape Town Tourism says that of the whale species seen in the waters around the Cape, the southern right whales are the most common, however, you might also get a chance to see humpback whales and Bryde’s whales.

Whale populations in the region have grown and they’re fairly common to spot off the coast of Cape Town.

Travel advisers say False Bay is the best place close to town for whale watching and for a unforgettable experience. Opt for the higher vantage points along the False Bay coastline such as Cape Point, Boyes Drive between St James and Kalk Bay, and Clarence Drive between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els.

During the whale-watching season, you might even be lucky enough to spot them close up if you take the train trip from Muizenberg to Simon’s Town.

For the best views of cetaceans from afar, consider a stay at Whale View Manor & Spa. Prices start at R1 797 a night for two.

Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

In the next few years, Durban is set to become a premium whaling watching destination as whales migrate along the east coast of South Africa through the coastal waters of Durban and onto the warmer waters of Mozambique and Madagascar to breed and give birth.

A Norwegian whaling station was established in Durban due to the numerous numbers of whales migrating along Durban’s Coast in 1907.

The whaling station became the largest land based whaling station in the world, It was closed in 1975 . What is left of it can be viewed off the Durban bluff.

Since the closure of the whaling station, there are estimated to be more than 7 000 humpback whales migrating and, similarly, the number of southern right whales has increased to more than 1 000 off the coast of southern Africa, boasting a growth of 7% a year.

At this rate, the population is expected to double in the next 10 years.

Consider a stay at Ocean Blue Guesthouse on the Bluff which has spectacular views of the ocean. Prices start from R950 a night for two.

Elephant Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal’s Elephant Coast stretches from the World Heritage Site of Lake St Lucia in the south to Kosi Bay, virtually on the Mozambican border.

The Elephant Coast is an extraordinary, untamed area fast growing in popularity for its incredible variety of habitats and eco-systems that combine into an unforgettable blend of adventure, unspoilt scenery and unique experiences.

The waters act as a corridor for humpback whales that make their way toward the coasts of Mozambique, Tanzania and Madagascar to breed between June and early December.

You can take boat trips out to see them and other marine life, including the occasional southern right whale, dolphins and whale shark.

Consider a stay at Thonga Beach Lodge, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a World Heritage Site), which offers ocean-view rooms and open ocean boat trips. A stay at Thonga Beach Lodge starts from R11 500 a night for two.
