Sailing Greece - Santorini to Mykonos
Great country, excellent tour leader but very poor comfort...so think about it twice before taking the tour, little space in a boat, no real shower...and I won't comment the toilets. ..and in august, it's very windy so you will never be able to relax in the deck..just watch the others being sick...Just so you know.....but the country is nice and worth exploring.
Greece Sailing Adventure: Cyclades Islands
My daughter and I just got back from sailing around 9 greek islands starting in Santorini n finishing there. The whole experience was sensational and I highly recommend it. The group got on really well we had a blast of a time. The Skipper Antonios was totally awesome in assuring our safety n explaining the different parts of the yatch n he gave us an opportunity to sail the boat I totally loved sailing the boat what an experience it was. Ill never forget the deep blue sea i was mesmorised by the colour. Antonios did great job at telling us about the islands n where to catch the bus if we wanted n guided us in best way possible. I loved everything about this holiday the only downfall was how tiny the cabins were pretty tight n squishy but we survived, we were there for 3wks but it felt like 3 months in a fantabulous way. Will definately do it again 1 day. Love love loved it. Cat and Bonnie xo

Best of Greece
What an incredible trip to remember! Greece is such a beautiful country and my wife and I had so much fun exploring and experiencing the culture and extravagance. The view from our hotel in Mykonos was beyond stunning. The trip did have a few hickups but I really appreciated the quick and efficient communication from Tourradar to correct the problem or issue. They did not give excuses for the companies they booked through for transport or tours and really had our back. They also asked and listened to feedback and expressed their appreciation for it. Will definitely considerer using them again in the future!
Bewitching Greece with All Inclusive beach stay
Wow, really impressed with the team at TourRadar (Wendy, Rose, Alberto, Sam and others). Our first organized tour and they were fantastic! Planned us a great trip from beginning to end and were always there for us 24/7. We felt comfortable and reassured all the way. Thoroughly recommend you check them out as we will be next trip for sure. Cheers and thanks team TourRadar! Bryan and Karen
Med Sailing in Greece - Ionian Sea
The beaches and meal were the best!
Cyclades Luxury Sailing Adventure (Catamaran)
It was an awesome experience! Having done something similar in Croatia, we were hoping this tour would have more planned excursions at each island stop (or at some of them; eg a walk to a historic site or bike rides at a given island etc), and instead the structure was that we’d get somewhere and then be free to sunbathe, wander the small town, get food on our own. Also great, but much more oriented to a very laid back, nearly zero activity sort of vacation. The crew was amazing, the boat was great, the views were unbeatable, and everything was smoothly run!

Not quite what I expected, but the tour guide was terrific
Family Greek Coast Caique Cruise
A fantastic trip cruising the Aegean Sea. Our guide Thanos wowed us with his enthusiasm for Evia and Greece, its history, its coastline, its food and all it has to offer. As a family we embraced life onboard, which was cramped in the cabins, but expected in a vessel of this design and age. Great, traditional food was prepared onboard for breakfast and lunch. And dinner was always an experience on Thanos’ recommendation. We shared this trip with a wonderful group of fellow travellers. Many laughs were had and friendships made. There was a change to our planned itinerary due to high winds but it didn’t detract from the overall trip. Swimming off the boat and the views when sailing were absolutely amazing. Evia is a beautiful, untouched island and I’m so glad we took the plunge and booked this trip.

What people love about sailing tours in greek islands.
Loved this sailing adventure and plan to do another one in the near future. The Captain Marius was excellent with a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of sailing and taking care of his passengers. Our group gelled well and we all had fun swimming, eating on board and going out to dinner and playing cards. I would definitely do this adventure again
Max was an amazing Skipper and went to great lengths to ensure we all had an amazing experience. I highly recommend this trip and will definitely be coming back for future adventures.
Did the 10 day sailing trip around greece! Had an amazing time. Lots of time spent on the boat, beautiful swimming spots and a great way to spend a short time at lots of islands. Spent most of the day out on the water and afternoon/nights exploring different greek islands. We had the most amazing skippers (George and Orestis). They mad the trip so fun and we’re full of information about Greece and the history. Definitely recommend this trip! Best skippers ever!

OUR GUESTS SAY IT BEST
“We were 2 couples on their brand new Saona catamaran for 7 nights. We thoroughly enjoyed our days at sea and our nights at port. We had breakfast and lunch on board and dinner ashore at a different island or port every night… It was a lovely experience and we recommend this company!”

“This is my second trip on Greek Seas. That should say it all. First trip was a week and this one was 10 days. Another Great experience this time with Kostas and Mary… Islands were great, food was fantastic. Mary is a food magician. Kostas knows the islands backwards and forwards and helped us choose the right islands. Definitely recommend this group if you want a trip of a life time.”
“We had a great week sailing around the islands. We’d never been sailing before and had no real idea what to expect. However the skipper was very knowledgeable and professional. We had our daughter with us and I felt at all times that our safety was his priority. We saw some fantastic sights as well as being asked what we wanted to get out of the holiday. I would recommend Greek Seas without hesitation.”

TWENTY-TWO YEARS OF
5-Star Reviews!
From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless.
Our experience has been nothing short of exceptional.
From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless. This company and the entire team could not have been more helpful! We live in the USA and never had a problem with communication. The Catamaran we selected was the Lagoon 450F. It was beautiful, spacious, clean, and easy to live on for a week as we sailed to beautiful beaches.
The Ionian Islands we visited were breathtaking, especially Kefalonia – it was our favorite! Above all, the feeling of safety that Captain George ensured throughout our trip made our journey even more memorable. We can’t wait to experience it again.
So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable sailing experience around the Greek Islands with a professional company and a knowledgeable and friendly guide, look no further!

Great knowledge of the area and its history.
Excellent week of sailing in the Greek Islands with Yiannis. He has great knowledge of the area and its history. He showed us unique beaches and key sites on the islands. A memorable week of adventure, drama, and weather. A great first visit to the country of Greece and its islands. Recommend Yiannis as a skipper and guide for your trip.

The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering.
We made it back safely and happily to Paros today. Yianni showed us secluded beaches, surprising chortas and agreed to take us to santorini even though he hates sailing there! The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering it on occasion. It’s a beautiful part of the world and we’d definitely recommend exploring it.

Yannis is a superb captain
First and foremost, Yannis is a superb captain. He is a true professional and puts the comfort and safety of the guests first. We had a superb week and thanks to the knowledge of Yannis we visited hidden beaches and places that were sublime. Yannis is passionate about sailing, and we all improved our sailing skills and learned about sailing this magical part of the world.
We cannot wait to return and know that Captain Yannis is our go-to Greek master of the seas.”

The best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.
My friends and I had a terrific sailing trip with Cpt. Yiannis. We sailed islands from Athens to Milos for a week. [...] Captain Yiannis was not only an outstanding skipper, but he also is a very knowledgeable tour guide. [...] Also, he had tremendous knowledge of any island we stopped on the way and recommended the best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.
The captain was very professional and sailed extremely safe and responsible. Great guy, a great captain, thank you, Captain Yiannis!

Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht
We had a wonderful week of sailing in the Saronic Gulf end of August. Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht for this bareboat charter trip . Together with the charter company we felt us in very good hands, for all questions we had. Except in this year 2020, with these special conditions!
Thanks Yiannis.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles
From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.
The best Greece cruises offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.
If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.
Note: Prices were accurate at the time of publication; they're subject to change without notice.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream
Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.
The vessel isn't the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, and you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newest vessels.
Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances, which means your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)
Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, you might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archaeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archaeological dig.
If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.
Disney Dream sails five-, seven- and nine-night voyages from $322 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady
If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.
Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.
The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed like mermaids, crew dressed like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.
As part of what just might be the best entertainment at sea , nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a drink. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.
If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.
Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 11-night cruises from Athens, starting at $145 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature a mix of stops in Greece (including Santorini and Rhodes and an overnight in Mykonos), Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas
Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Europe to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Explorer of the Seas could be right up your alley.
The vessel is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest ships — it debuted in 2000 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.
The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of six, seven or eight nights from just $85 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. These cruises sail either between Rome and Athens or between Barcelona and Athens, or round-trip from Ravenna (the port for Bologna, Italy). Voyages include calls on Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as ports in Cyprus and Turkey.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star
Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience because it calls on some of the area's smaller ports in addition to Athens.
The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, it can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Monemvasia, a town carved into rock, and Gythion, where you'll find caves and lovely beaches.)
Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.
Among other itineraries, the vessel sails weeklong cruises between Athens and Rome that call on Monemvasia and Gythion in Greece, as well as several ports in Italy. Rates start from $300 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey
Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.
If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flair, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. The ship isn't new, but it's new to the line. Following an extensive refurbishment, and its Celestyal debut in late 2023, it's the youngest member of the line's fleet.
Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.
Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Prices start from $89 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.
Bottom line
The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

Sailing in Greece: The Yachting Numbers
There are more than 6.000 professional pleasure crafts in Greece, ranging from inflatable boats to mega-yachts. Notably, there are 350 mega-yachts (more than 24 meters in length), out of a global population of 8,500, making Greece a prominent destination for luxury yacht enthusiasts . The country hosts 35 marinas and is home to 83 boat-building companies.
The chartering season extends from April to November, with the peak period occurring between June and September.
Sailing in Greece: Type of Vessels
The Greek chartering market offers a wide array of vessels, with the primary distinction being between sailing boats and motorboats. An essential consideration is whether the vessel is chartered bare, assuming the client holds the required license, or with the necessary crew.
Furthermore, there’s a diverse range of sizes available. Options span from two-cabin, 30-foot sailing boats to impressive 300-foot mega yachts. In between, there are 40-70 foot motor yachts, as well as the versatile hybrid category of motor sailers.
1. Sailing Boats
A sailing charter boat, though relatively slower and with limited space, offers an unparalleled experience of cruising. It provides the unique sensation of gliding through the water without the hum of an engine, only the soothing sounds of the wind in the sails and the water flowing around the hull. This type of vessel allows passengers to actively participate in its handling, making it an ideal choice for groups who enjoy physical activity and are environmentally conscious about their carbon footprint.
While sailing boats primarily rely on the wind, they are equipped with small engines for situations where there is no wind or much time to wait for the wind to blow. If you are not an experienced sailor , boats can be hired with a skipper (see “Other Practical Information” below for minimum qualifications to hire a bare sailing boat).
2. Catamaran Sailing Yachts
A catamaran is a double-hull boat that offers a roomier living space and thus, more comfort on board. Due to their two hulls, they do not yaw making for smoother sailing with minimal heeling. This stability allows for the ease of performing everyday activities, such as cooking, while under sail.
Moreover, it has a lower draught allowing it to sail in shallower waters or anchor closer to the shore. Finally, it may be safer due to the duplication of the motor and the rudder (one per hull).
On the flip side, catamarans tend to be pricier both in terms of purchase and charter costs. Their wider beam also translates to higher docking expenses. Regarding sailing, a catamaran will drift more easily, due to its lower draught. This requires swift anchoring especially if winds blow from the side.
3. Motor Yachts
A motor yacht provides greater speed, allowing you to cover more significant distances in a day without relying on the wind. Additionally, it offers a bit more space, making it well-suited for sunbathing, and often comes with a protected cockpit for rainy days.
However, it’s worth noting that motor yachts may not be suitable for use in rough seas, defined as conditions exceeding 6 Beaufort. Due to their power and speed, motor yachts are typically chartered with a captain.
4. Motor Sailers
Motor sailers are a hybrid of a sailing boat and a motor yacht. They have sails but they are bulkier and roomier than a pure sailing boat, they therefore also rely on their engine.
5. Mega Yachts
This category represents the essence of yachting luxury. Officially, it includes yachts that are more than 24 meters long. In the chartering market, however, one can find vessels exceeding 100 meters in length, accompanied by crews ranging from 10-15 people for vessels accommodating up to 12 passengers to more than 30 people crews for those designed for larger guest capacities. Yachts of this magnitude must comply with the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) convention set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
How Much does Sailing in Greece cost?
Chartering prices greatly vary, mainly according to the period of the year and the type of yacht, (size, age, condition, equipment). Here are some indicative starting prices :
- (36”) sailing yacht (w/out skipper): €300/day or €1.500 /week
- (38”) catamaran sailing yacht (w/out skipper): €2.750 /week
- Motor Yacht (w/ skipper): €1.500/day
- Skipper: €150-180/day
- Hostess: €110-150/day
Essentials for Chartering a Yacht in Greece
Number of persons.
It’s crucial to choose travel companions with whom you’re confident your friendship can withstand the closeness of confined spaces. A yachting vacation serves as a test for friendships. Consider individuals who share a compatible travel style and communication, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable sailing experience for everyone on board.
The idea is you all have a blast cruising the seas without driving each other crazy!
Sailing in Greece: When is the Best Season?
Peak season in Greece runs from June to September, with warm or even hot air and perfect sea temperatures for swimming. Keep in mind that late July to mid-August can get pretty windy in the Aegean. While the weather stays fine until early October, from September (or sometimes even late August), there might be some rain, particularly in the more humid Ionian Sea as opposed to the drier Aegean.
Make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecasts, adjusting your plans as needed for a smooth sailing experience.
Type of Vessel
Choosing the right yacht for your Greek adventure is a matter of personal preference. If you’re into the thrill of sports and the excitement of the sea, or if you’re seeking a more relaxed and leisurely experience, the type of yacht matters. Your familiarity with nautical activities and your ecological concerns also play a role in making the best choice.
When it comes to size, consider your budget and the number of companions on your journey.
With or Without Crew
In most cases, motor yachts come with a captain , and for larger vessels, additional crew members may be included. Depending on the yacht’s size, you might have the option to add a cook and/or hostess for extra convenience. On the other hand, sailing boats are commonly chartered bare , especially by experienced sailors who prefer to take control. However, if you’re not an expert sailor, you can always request a skipper for a smoother sailing experience
For larger sailing boats, having a second crew member can be beneficial, and they might also take on the role of a cook or hostess. Opting for a skipper ensures a seamless sailing holiday . Beyond commanding the vessel and understanding local sea conditions, the skipper handles all communications with ports, marinas, and suppliers.
However, it’s essential to note that the skipper’s presence may slightly compromise your privacy onboard.
Duration of the Trip
Sailing boats are typically chartered weekly, starting on Saturday although charterers may offer more flexible arrangements. Motorboats can be hired daily.
Sailing the Greek Islands
The Greek seas boast various sailing areas, each with its unique characteristics and charm.
The Cyclades are the most internationally known destination in Greece thanks to the reputation of Mykonos and Santorini. All islands share the same iconic whitewashed houses, arid landscapes, golden sand beaches, and crystalline blue waters.
Cyclades islands are known for the windy conditions, particularly the ‘meltemi’ winds, prevalent from June to August, peaking between mid-July and mid-August. Navigating these waters demands strong sailing skills and experience.
The Dodecanese are the warmer sailing destination with moderate winds, allowing sailing during the shoulder months (April-May, October-November) when the winds are calmer. It also offers proximity to popular destinations on the Turkish shore like Bodrum.
Sailing in Greece and in particular the Ionian Sea, in the western part of the country, offers a different scenery with green islands and blue-emerald waters. Prevailing NW winds are mild and the sea is calm. This makes the area the perfect destination for the less experienced sailors.
The North Sporades islands, located on the Northwest side of the Aegean Sea are a chain of 6 islands three of which, the easternmost ones, are non-inhabited and are an important shelter for the Mediterranean seal. The westernmost ones offer rich vegetation and beautiful beaches. The prevailing wind is usually N – NW. Moderate to good sailing skills and experience are required in this area.
The Saronic and Argolic Gulfs (Argo-Saronic) present three advantages, in addition to its islands: Ease of access as it is close to Athens, proximity to the archaeological sites of Epidaurus and Mycenae , and calmer sea as the area is somehow covered by the north. It is, therefore, along with the Ionian Sea a good pick for sailors with moderate experience.
Sailing in Greece and Children
If there will be children on board, please inform the charterer so that appropriate life vests can be provided, along with the possibility of a safety net below the vessel’s rail for added security.
Typically, the boat comes with a policy that covers the client against responsibilities concerning third parties, marine pollution, and significant damages to the boat. However, it’s essential to note that the personal injuries of the clients are not covered. Therefore, potential clients should review the coverage provided by their insurance policies and consider purchasing additional insurance, if necessary.
Renting a Sailing Boat in Greece
The minimum qualification to hire a bareboat sailing yacht is either two sailing licenses or at least one sailing license and one declaration of sailing experience for the co-skipper. In the latter case, the co-skipper will sign such a declaration of sailing experience upon embarkation.
Sailing licenses can be issued by various entities, including the government of origin, sailing clubs, sailing schools, yachting and sailing associations, as well as established charter companies.
Marinas in Greece
Marinas are quite cheap in Greece. They may cost from 5-15 € per day plus expenses on the water and electricity. On the other hand, there are not many marinas but there are many commercial ports as well as small ports in fishing villages. Places in ports are free, however, one cannot reserve them in advance.
Docking at commercial ports may be a bit challenging due to the maneuvering of liners, especially if they arrive at night. The typical berthing approach is stern-to, while berthing alongside is less common, particularly during the busy high season. Opting for bows-to berthing (generally feasible) offers more privacy.
How to Charter a Boat in Greece
Feel free to submit your request here , and we’ll promptly send you an offer from reputable charterers. If you have any general questions, don’t hesitate to reach out as well . Keep in mind that making a reservation sooner increases the variety of available vessels that can better match your preferences and needs.
Practical Tips for Sailing in Greece
- Pack light when sailing, there’s nowhere to store big suitcases so choose a small backpack and, if you need to, leave extra luggage behind in storage.
- Learn Local Navigation Rules: Familiarize yourself with local navigation rules and regulations to avoid any legal issues.
- Ensure you have essential emergency equipment on board, such as life jackets, a first aid kit, and a throwable lifebuoy.
- Have reliable communication tools on board, including a VHF radio, and know the emergency channels.
- You will be spending a lot of time traveling on board (with stops for swimming and lunch breaks) so be prepared if you get seasick. Stock up on anti-nausea medications or use seasick bracelets. Stay above deck and keep your eye on the horizon line. Being below deck (usually) makes seasickness worse.
- If you are on the front part of the boat you may get sprayed which you may find fun or you may not. If not, you better sit in the back of the boat.
- The Wi-Fi access will probably be limited. Bring a book with you (or two).
- Dispose of waste properly, respect marine life, and follow eco-friendly practices to preserve the beauty of the Greek Islands.
Packing List for Sailing in Greece
- Starting from your luggage you should rather get a waterproof duffel bag than a large, hard suitcase . Remember, storage room may be limited .
- This is an opportunity to invest in a good underwater camera like GoPro 12 or Olympus TG-6 . Bring along rechargeable batteries for your phones, laptops, and cameras.
- Cover-ups for the constant sun on the boat are your best friends!
- A lot of sunscreen lotion for the body, face, and lips . Salt will make your lips very dry.
- Dry bags for mobile and any other electronics on board.
- The light sea breeze feels wonderful on your skin but the sun will burn you if you are not covered or protected with strong UV, a couple of good sunglasses, and a hat.

The best time to sail in Greece is during the summer months of June to September when the weather is warm, the sea is calm, and the islands are buzzing with activity. However, if you prefer a quieter experience with milder temperatures, the months of May and October can also be pleasant for sailing.

It just makes sense that we’d organise a Greek Islands sailing trip. Our Stoke Afloat Croatian Sailing trips sell out every summer, with all the lucky buccaneers on board having a banger of a time on every cruise (the open bar most certainly helps). And we just adore the Greek Islands, the relaxed ones, but especially the party party ouzo soaked ones. So we combined the two, found a bigger boat, and have organised an eight-day route dripping in beauty and beers from Athens to Mykonos. Seven days of sailing the Cyclades, stopping at sites of great natural appeal, Greek cuisine, the best bits of the Mediterranean Sea, and more than a few obligatory spots to lose our minds on the dance floor.
Like in Croatia, Stoke Afloat Greek Island Sailing is the only boat with an open beer and sangria bar, so you won’t get hit at the end of the trip with an outrageous bar bill (you’ll probably still find a way somehow). Like always, you can be sure that your boat-mates will be absolute legends, with Stoke Travel’s good times reputation meaning that all the dead weights choose to float with the less fun crews.

Sailing through the Greek Islands, the wind in our hair and ouzo down our throats, stopping only to swim in clear blue bays, force feta into our faces, explore whitewashed villages, and to party until our knees fall off.
We love the Greek Islands and we love sailing around the Mediterranean, so we figured that in this post-pandemic world – when we really need to be treating ourselves to all the nice things possible – why not combine the two and set sail on the first of many Stoke Afloat Greek Islands charters. We’ll be sailing from Athens to Mykonos, stopping off at a bunch of off-the-beaten-track island gems along the way, eating and drinking and swimming and sunning and living our best possible lives. Our vessel is a traditional Greek Gulet, a gorgeous piece of nautical architecture with a storied history of ferrying fun-lovers through this archipelago, stopping to swim, explore, and sample the wonders of Eastern Mediterranean, Greek, cuisine. The yacht itself has plenty of space for activities, multiple decks with shade and sun, and a fully stocked bar that we’ll open to you (for beer and sangria) for a measly €10 a day, saving you the shock and indignity of a malaka of a bar tab at the end of the tour.
Where are we going to sail in the Greek Islands?
We’ll sail from the capital Athens (cheap flights, hehe) through the Cyclades chain of islands, the most beautiful and well known chain in all of Greece, and maybe the Mediterranean and the world.
Acropolis and the Parthenon and so on. You know the story of Athens, and you know you want to be there to take a bunch of photos of antiquity. Maybe arrive a couple of days early to explore, get content for the ‘Gram, eat, drink, and so on before we set sail.
Verdant island playground for the Athenian rich and famous, beautiful villages with more earthy tones than the rest of Greece (sounds silly, but you’ll notice it), valleys full of orchards, virgin beaches and coves… There are so many beaches and coves on this trip, but because this is our first island these ones will hit differently.
Less “touristy” than other islands in the Cyclades, and thus is a bit of an unspoilt paradise with 100 beaches – many of them unspoilt – and rolling hills with traditional whitewashed villages and classic Greek Island landscapes.
Another gem off the international traveller trail, Syros is a hit with Greek tourists and for good reason. From the colourful over-sea architecture of the island’s main village, Ermoupolis, to the villages and monasteries hidden in the hills.
An island of much religious significance for Greek Orthodox worshippers, the island of Tinos has more virgin beaches, outstanding food, and could serve as a nice place to make our peace with God before we hit the next stop…
The premier party island of the Eastern Mediterranean, Mykonos most certainly doesn’t need any introduction from us. Nevertheless, we do have to let you know that we will be spending three nights in and around Mykonos to finish up our trip. Exploring the uninhabited islands off its tips, partying, party boating, lapping up the sun, living it up, etc and so on and so forth.
Our Greek Islands sailing itinerary covers the hot spots of Athen and Mykonos, and then squeezes in a whole bunch of lesser-known islands in between. We reckon this is the perfect balance of what you know you want to see, and a few little gems you mightn’t have heard of yet. Get your culture ON (and take advantage of the more authentic – and cheaper – food and drink)
Who Sails with Stoke through the Greek Islands?
If you know Stoke, you know that we attract the best of the best (or the best of the worst, depending on your perspective). Legends who choose to travel and sail with Stoke are always the ones who want to make the most of their time away, the people who will sightsee all day and party all night, who will challenge each other to jump from the highest cliffs, who want to spend the days sitting around talking shit, and fill much of their nights with the same. Stoke Travellers are curious, interested in the culture and history of the places they are travelling, but ready to crack open a cold beer and tear apart a dancefloor at a moment’s notice. The people you will be sailing with are your shipmates, your new crew, and probably your new best buds for life. Stoke only attracts the best (of the worst). In addition to the fellow travellers on board, your boat will be captained and crewed by experienced locals who know the waters well, and have a lot of experience in taking young and fun travellers to the best spots for them – from superb swimming spots, to perfect ports for a trip ashore to get acquainted with the local taverna scene. There’s also a dedicated bartender to mix your drinks and keep the beers cold, and an onboard chef who will be whipping up your daily brunch made from local produce and typical ingredients. And then there will be your Stoke tour guides, who are trained in and trusted to make sure that every aspect of your trip is as it should be, and that you are having as much fun as is physically possible day in, night out.
What kinda boat will we be sailing the greek islands on?
You’ll be on the legendary MS Artemis, a 35 metre traditional Greek gulet with space for 46 soggy sailors on board, sleeping in a combination of quad, triple, twin and double cabins (small surcharge for solo travellers wishing to bunk alone, and amorous couples looking for the double bed). All cabins come with AC and an ensuite, so this is pretty much like sailing first class on the Titanic (minus the sinking). There is a fully equipped kitchen where the chef will dazzle us everyday with our bottomless brunches, and the bar is fully stocked and also fully open for beer and sangria at only €10 extra a day. Plus we have outdoor and indoor areas galore, plenty of space for activities or sharing tall tales, sunbeds and seating for all, a spot for dancing, somewhere for romancing and plenty of handrails to practice your jimmy-flips from, as well as spots for more subdued entrances into the sea.
A beautiful boat for a beautiful bunch of buccaneers. Can you think of a better way to glide across the Aegean Sea this summer?

The Best Places to Learn How to Sail, From the Greek Islands to the Florida Keys
Posted: March 21, 2024 | Last updated: March 21, 2024
Sailing is one of the best ways to explore some of the most beautiful, untouched coastal destinations around the globe. But from the outside, learning how to sail might seem like an intimidating—and expensive—pursuit.
However, learning to sail isn’t as difficult as it might seem. And contrary to what some may believe, “sailing is for everyone,” Zeke Quezada, the Director of Communications at the American Sailing Association (ASA) tells Condé Nast Traveler.
“It is important to understand that anyone can sail, and it is really easy to learn,” Quezada says. “Sailing is not just for the affluent; head into a community sailing club at your local marina, and you'll have options to get out on the water for little to no cost.”
While mastering the art of sailing takes consistent practice, hopeful captains looking for a crash-course to jumpstart their journey may consider a sailing vacation . These educational charters allow you to fully immerse yourself in the nautical lifestyle —and you can earn official certifications along the way. On these types of trips, “you have a qualified skipper on board who is offering instruction, as well as advice on how to become a safe and confident sailor,” Quezada explains. “The best part is that you can have your family onboard, and everyone is having a vacation while you check off the bucket list item of learning to sail.”
When planning your first sailing trip , look for trips and schools that offer credentialed schools and instructors; organizations such as ASA, US Sailing, and the Royal Yacht Association are internationally recognized. By following these certification tracks, you can become licensed to sail a charter without a captain on board, also known as a “bareboat charter.” Though not required in some places, a bareboat certification makes it much easier (and safer) to rent your own boat .
No matter which route you take, sailing is a lifelong skill that will open doors to a community of people passionate about getting out on the water and protecting the oceans. “Most importantly, you will learn how to sit back, turn off the phone, and feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face,” says Quezada. “You might start listening to Jimmy Buffet as well.”
Below, we’ve rounded up the best places around the world for learning how to sail—including destinations in North America , Europe , Asia , and Australia —plus, the sailing courses and trips to book in 2024.
Sign up to receive the latest news, expert tips, and inspiration on all things travel
The Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands are some of the best training grounds for novice sailors “because of their line-of-sight sailing, predictable wind, and sailor-friendly destinations,” Quezada says. “In the BVI, you can learn to sail and have a beach vacation simultaneously.”
If you’re looking to get your bareboat license, there are several ASA-certified sailing schools in the BVI and US Virgin Islands. Offshore Sailing School , one of the world's preeminent sailing institutions, offers fast track courses for all levels of sailing. Alternatively, charter a captained catamaran, one of the most popular ways to explore the Caribbean.
Florida Keys
Warm temperatures, calm turquoise waters, and consistent easterly winds make the Florida Keys one of the best places to learn to sail in the US. Stay at the Key Lime Sailing Club and cottages resort on Buttonwood Sound in Key Largo and take lessons at the American Sailing Academy , located onsite.
Alternatively, outdoor education organization Outward Bound, which offers program scholarships, is hosting a Florida Keys sailing excursion for adults in March/April 2025. Participants will live on a 30-foot open sailboat for slightly over a week learning beginner, intermediate, and advanced skills in chart and compass navigation, small boat seamanship, weather observation, and anchoring.
Greek Islands
Sea of Cortez, Mexico
New England
There’s no better way to experience a quintessential New England summer than by sailboat. The sailing season in the Northeast runs from April to October, with ASA and US Sailing accredited schools located in major metropolitans like New York City and Boston as well as coastal enclaves like Newport and Cape Cod .
For adults seeking a basic introduction to the sport, US Sailing offers “first sail” lessons in dozens of locations up and down the Eastern seaboard. Pull on a striped sweater, pack a bottle of rosé, and you’re good to go!
Croatia’s Adriatic Coast is home to a vibrant sailing community with picture-perfect weather conditions. Beginner sailors will appreciate the gentle winds of Dubrovnik, the Split Islands, and Kornati National Park , whose sheltered coves and bays supply calm and predictable winds. Enjoy incredible natural wonders only accessible by boat, like the famous Blue Cave.
Student sailors can earn beginner, intermediate, and advanced ASA certifications aboard 8-day learn to sail vacations in July, August, and September 2024. Hosted by American Sailing partner Sailing Virgins, the catamaran and monohull ships—each a minimum of 40 feet with 3-5 cabins—visit the Croatian islands of Brac, Korčula, Šćedro, Komiža, Vis, and Hvar.
Gulf of Thailand
