Top Solo Traveler Cruises Without Single Supplements: A Guide

by Judith Eve | Mar 10, 2024 | Destination Guides & Ports

alaska cruises without single supplement

Solo travel is an exhilarating adventure, offering the freedom to explore the world at one's own pace. Yet, the thrill of setting sail alone can often be dampened by the dreaded single supplement fee, making solo cruising seem like a luxury reserved for the few.

But there's good news on the horizon for solo adventurers. A wave of cruise lines has begun to embrace the solo traveler, offering cruises with no single supplement. This means you can enjoy the serene beauty of the ocean and the excitement of new destinations without the extra cost.

Whether you're a seasoned solo voyager or contemplating your first solo trip, the world of cruising is becoming more accessible and inviting. Let's dive into the world of solo traveler cruises with no single supplement, where the journey is just as thrilling as the destination.

Understanding the Single Supplement Fee

When planning a solo cruise, travelers often encounter what's known as the single supplement fee . This fee is an additional charge imposed on solo travelers booking a room or cabin designed for two people. The reason behind it is straightforward: cruise lines traditionally price their accommodations based on double occupancy. Therefore, when only one person occupies a room, the cruise line potentially loses out on revenue that could have been generated by a second occupant.

The single supplement fee can vary significantly, sometimes costing up to 50% to 100% of the room's cost, effectively doubling the expense for a solo traveler. This financial hurdle is a major concern for those longing to explore the world by sea without a companion. It's not merely an extra charge; it becomes a barrier to entry for many.

However, the landscape is shifting. A growing number of cruise lines are acknowledging the solo travel trend and adapting their pricing strategies accordingly. No single supplement cruises are emerging as a popular solution. These cruises offer solo travelers the chance to enjoy their journey without the burdensome fee, making the adventure more attainable and enjoyable.

Below is a brief comparison of single supplement fees across several cruise lines:

The introduction of solo traveler-friendly cruises is reshaping the experience, creating opportunities for individuals to embark on maritime adventures with ease. As the trend grows, the hope is more cruise lines will join the movement, further breaking down the financial barriers that solo travelers face.

The Rise of Solo Traveler-Friendly Cruise Lines

alaska cruises without single supplement

In recent years, the travel industry has witnessed a significant shift towards accommodating solo travelers, especially within the cruising sector. Recognizing the growing demographic of individuals seeking adventure on their own terms, several cruise lines have started to roll out initiatives specifically designed to welcome solo travelers without the burdensome single supplement fees. This trend is not just a nod to inclusivity but also a smart business move, tapping into an untapped market of eager explorers.

Traditionally, the cruising experience was tailored towards couples and families, with pricing and accommodations reflecting this focus. Solo travelers were often left to grapple with additional costs that made solo voyages less appealing. However, the tide is turning. A number of cruise lines have begun to introduce ships with cabins specifically designed for single occupancy, boasting amenities on par with their double occupancy counterparts. These solo cabins are not only cost-effective but are also stylishly designed, offering the same luxury and comfort expected on a premium cruise.

Moreover, the introduction of dedicated solo traveler activities and social events on these cruises fosters a sense of community and connection among single travelers. From cocktail mixers to group excursions, these activities are tailored to enhance the solo cruising experience, ensuring that individuals traveling alone have ample opportunity to meet fellow adventurers.

As more cruise lines adopt solo-friendly policies and infrastructure, the solo traveler is no longer an outlier but a valued guest with a range of options tailored to their unique needs. The movement towards embracing solo travelers is a testament to the evolving nature of travel, reflecting changing societal trends and the desire for more inclusive and accommodating experiences. The progression of this trend holds promising prospects for the future of solo travel, signaling a more dynamic and diverse cruising industry ahead.

Benefits of Cruises with No Single Supplement

alaska cruises without single supplement

Solo cruising has always been an alluring prospect for those looking to venture out onto the seas on their own terms. However, the financial implications of single supplement fees often dampened the enthusiasm of potential solo travelers. With cruise lines now waiving these fees, the experience has been transformed. Here are key benefits that come with choosing cruises without single supplements.

First and foremost, cost savings stand out as the most immediate benefit. Traditionally, solo travelers had to pay almost double the fare to accommodate for the unused space in a double occupancy setting. Without these fees, individuals can save significantly, making luxury cruising more accessible for everyone.

Beyond the financials, cruises without single supplements foster a community of like-minded adventurers . Since these cruises attract solo travelers, it's easier for guests to meet others who share similar interests and travel styles. Many cruise lines have recognized this and now organize events specifically for solo travelers, enhancing the social aspect of the journey.

Tailored experiences are another compelling advantage. Cabins designed for one and activities targeted at solo travelers mean that every aspect of the cruise is crafted with the individual in mind. From dining options that don't enforce the communal table setting to excursions aimed at solo explorers, these cruises understand and cater to the unique needs of their guests.

Lastly, the sense of empowerment and independence that comes with solo travel is amplified on these cruises. Travelers have the liberty to plan their days as they wish, without the need to compromise. Whether it's choosing to join a group activity or spending the day lounging by the pool with a good book, the choice is entirely theirs.

The evolution of cruise lines to accommodate and encourage solo travelers with no single supplement fees is a testament to the industry's adaptability and commitment to inclusivity. It's clear that these benefits not only enhance the solo travel experience but also pave the way for more personalized and gratifying adventures on the high seas.

Tips for Solo Travelers Booking Cruises

Booking a cruise as a solo traveler can be an exhilarating experience, but it's important to navigate the process smartly to maximize enjoyment and value. Here are some essential pointers:

  • Research is Key : They should start by researching which cruise lines offer no single supplement deals as these can significantly reduce costs. Websites and forums dedicated to solo traveling are great resources for finding up-to-date information and reviews from other solo travelers.
  • Early Booking or Last-Minute Deals : To snag the best deals, solo travelers ought to book well in advance or keep an eye out for last-minute offers. Cruise lines sometimes drop single supplement fees closer to departure dates to fill up cabins.
  • Deck Plan Awareness : Understanding the layout of the ship can help solo travelers choose the right cabin. Some cruise lines offer cabins designed specifically for solo travelers which are strategically located, providing easier access to the ship's amenities and social areas.
  • Join Social Groups : Many cruise lines have social groups and events tailored for solo travelers. Participating in these can enhance the sense of community and make it easier to meet fellow travelers with similar interests.
  • Stay Flexible : Staying flexible with travel dates and destinations can lead to better deals for solo travelers. Off-peak seasons usually see a drop in single supplement charges, making luxurious cruises more accessible.
  • Consult with a Specialist : Talking to a travel agent who understands the needs of solo travelers can provide invaluable insight. They're often aware of the best deals available and can recommend cruises that offer the most rewarding experiences for solo adventurers.

By keeping these tips in mind, solo travelers can navigate the booking process effectively, ensuring a memorable and cost-efficient cruising experience.

Exploring Destinations on Solo Traveler Cruises

Solo traveler cruises provide an unparalleled opportunity to explore the world's vistas, each with its unique charm and adventures. When choosing a destination, solo cruisers often seek places that offer a blend of cultural richness, scenic beauty, and opportunities for personal growth. Popular destinations for solo traveler cruises include the Mediterranean for its historic ports, the Caribbean for its vibrant cultures and stunning beaches, and the Norwegian Fjords for their breathtaking natural landscapes.

Embarking on a solo cruise means you’re the master of your itinerary. You can dive into the local cuisine, wander through ancient ruins, or simply bask in the sun on a secluded beach. Many cruise lines offer excursions designed with solo travelers in mind, ensuring you experience the essence of each port while providing opportunities to connect with fellow passengers.

Solo travel doesn't mean you have to be alone unless you choose to. Onboard social events specifically for solo travelers are commonplace. These events range from welcome mixers and group dinners to exclusive tours, making it easy to meet like-minded individuals. For those who cherish solitude, the beauty of solo travel on cruises is the freedom to join in or opt out as you please.

The number of solo cabins and dedicated solo activities varies greatly among cruise lines and ships. It's essential to research and possibly consult with a travel specialist to find the cruise that best meets your personal travel style and needs. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, there’s a solo traveler cruise with no single supplement that’s right for you.

Tips on Booking a Solo Alaska Cruise Aboard a Small Ship

A single female traveler waves from the entrance to a tribal house in Alaska

Want to go to Alaska as a single traveler? An Alaska small ship cruise is an excellent way to go if you’re up for adventure. While the experience will be quite different from something like a themed Alaska singles cruise aboard a large cruise ship (see our Big Ship vs Small Ship for all the core reasons why), if your idea of fun is more off the ship than on one, then you’ll find good company.

There are currently no dedicated Alaska singles cruise sailings aboard expedition ships, but there are plenty of ways to get aboard with a mix of couples, families and other solo travelers.

Solo Cruises to Alaska – What They’re Like

Aboard a small expedition ship with AdventureSmith Explorations, it can be a lot like “a summer camp for adults,” as one of our past passengers described it. Depending on your ship and cruise itinerary, often different levels of adventure are offered, pairing you with different small groups of other travelers multiple times each day. One day, for example, you might pair up with a guide or another traveler into a double kayak. You might take a shoreline walk, or opt for a longer hike into wilderness with a group of 8. Meals are casual affairs with open seating and various table configurations, and often the guides join you for meals.

Alaska Cruise Single Supplements Explained

Imagine booking a hotel room as a solo traveler: the rate is the same whether you have two people in the room or not. That’s the same with cabins aboard a ship. But to help out single travelers, cruise operators will often offer a “single supplement.” This equates into a percentage that a person will pay in addition to the double-occupancy rate to book the cabin for solo occupancy.

For example, some single supplements are 50%. This means the solo traveler would have to pay the normal double-occupancy price, plus 50% of the cabin’s other listed (per-person) double-occupancy rate. The same concept for Alaska single cruise supplements, listed another way by some operators, is noted as “1.5x the per-person rate.”

Finding No Single Supplement on Alaska Cruises & Other Deals

To avoid a single supplement, simply find a ship that offers dedicated single cabins. These may not always be priced as low as double-occupancy cabins, but some might be. Dedicated single cabins are often smaller in size, and have a single twin bed, versus two twin beds. Ships with dedicated solo cabins in Alaska include, for example, the 22-guest Safari Quest , 36-guest Safari Explorer , 74-guest Wilderness Explorer and 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer . And some ships like the 12-guest Sea Star do not charge a single supplement at all for a few of their double-occupancy cabins.

Another way to skip single supplements is to browse our many Alaska cruise deals to find special offers for waived or reduced single supplements on Alaska cruises. Take a peek, or contact our team to search the best Alaska singles cruise deals for you.

We are experts at matching travelers to the cruise that fits their interests, ability and budget. We will help you find the best price and experience in Alaska. Let us assist you sorting through all the logistics, planning and booking your trip.

Hurtigruten Cruises Offers Solo Travelers NO Single Supplement

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: June 7, 2021

If you are a regular reader of Cruise Maven, you know I rarely write about a cruise line’s special offers. But when I saw Hurtigruten’s “No Single Supplement” cruise promotion for solo cruisers , I had to investigate. Here’s what I found.

alaska cruises without single supplement

Choose from Norwegian coastal cruises or expedition routes to the Arctic, Antarctica, Alaska, even the Northwest Passage with NO single supplement.

Norwegian Coastal cruises

Hurtigruten is offering no single supplement on four of its most popular Norwegian coastal routes. These include:

  • The Roundtrip Cruise – from Bergen, Norway
  • The Cruise North – Bergen to Kirkenes
  • The Cruise South – Kirkenes to Bergen
  • Norwegian Discovery – Bergen to Kirkenes to Trondheim

The Roundtrip Cruise, Hurtigruten’s 12-day classic coastal cruise, includes visits to 34 ports of which most are above the Arctic Circle. And with most of the sailings with no solo supplement are in late spring and summer, that means more daylight to see and do more along the way.

Shorter cruises include both the Cruise North and Cruise South itineraries. With a choice of ships, cruises are 7-days and itineraries are from either Bergen in the south to Kirkenes, or you can begin your cruise in Kirkenes and cruise south to Bergen. Both cruises include port visits to Norway’s major coastal cities and remote villages.

Hurtigruten Norwegian fjord cruise

The 11-day Norwegian Discovery cruise is sort of a combination of the other three. You’ll embark in Bergen, cruise across the Arctic Circle to Kirkenes and when the ship heads south for Bergen, passengers will disembark in the medieval city of Trondheim, founded in 997.

READ NEXT:  Best tips for your first solo cruise

Along the way, on all four itineraries, routes include sailing through Norway’s world-famous fjords with all the spectacular scenery you can imagine. There are complimentary enrichment lectures and onboard activities led by Hurtigruten guides and naturalists.

Hurtigruten Expedition Cruises with no Single Supplement

Hurtigruten has extended their no single supplement offer to 19 amazing itineraries. I think I counted the list of these 19 itineraries three times because it’s not often that cruise lines offer no single supplements on their best itineraries. But it’s true. From 6- to 20-day voyages to Antarctica, exploring Spitsbergen in search of polar bears, discovering the coast of Alaska or even a few Caribbean cruises, there’s really no single supplement.

No Solo supplement is a Limited time offer!

Here’s the deal…there’s a time limit on booking your cruise and not be hit with paying double. Take advantage of not paying extra and reserve your stateroom by February 29, 2020. While most of the cruises available on this promo are for this spring and summer, there are cruises into the fall and even 2021.

Exploring Alaska on a small-ship cruise is not only fun, but safe, convenient and relaxed. Leave the details and logistics to the crew, and focus on bonding with new friends and Alaska’s breathtaking landscape and wildlife.

Think of it as summer camp for adults! Minus the sleeping bags and curfews!

And the best part?

UnCruise is offering cabins on Alaska cruises this summer with no single supplement on bookings made by April 15, 2022.

No Single Supplement

In case you’re not exactly sure what a single supplement is; if you occupy a cabin by yourself you have to typically pay the dreaded single supplement since cruise cabin pricing is based on the double occupancy of the room.

So when there is “no single supplement,” it means you can occupy a cabin alone and not have to pay anything extra! And that’s exactly what UnCruise is offering.

Save BIG with no single supplement on all Alaska 2022 itineraries aboard the 86-passenger Wilderness Legacy , including the “ Wild, Woolly & WOW ” cruise round-trip from Juneau and the “ Rivers of Adventure & Wine”  itinerary on the Columbia and Snake rivers round-trip from Portland, OR.

The waived single-supplement offer is good on lead-in cabin categories on any 2022 Wilderness Legacy departure.

And it’s valid for new bookings made before April 15, 2022.

What travelers are saying

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

No Single Supplement: How to Find Trips without a Solo Penalty

Janice Waugh

February 8, 2023 by Janice Waugh

how to find tours with no single supplement

Since 2009, we've been working to change the way the travel industry serves solo travelers. We've been teaching solo travelers how to find trips with no single supplement and encouraging companies to eliminate it.

It's not been an easy battle but we are gaining ground. More companies are offering more trips and more departures with more space without single supplements. In fact, there are now some companies that cater exclusively to solo travelers.

But where are they? How do you find them? I have some advice.

how to find cruises with no single supplement

Table of Contents

What Is the Single Supplement?

The single supplement is a surcharge endured by people who book a tour, cruise, or other travel package as a single person rather than with a travel partner. What does the single supplement mean? It means paying more for one person than half of what a couple pays.

Have you looked at the prices for tours and seen the term “per person based on double occupancy”? When you see that term and look at the price for a single person you will notice it is much higher than the quoted price.

In fact, a single person can pay up to the full two-person price. In such a case the single supplement is 100%. You're paying 100% more than one person paying the double-occupancy rate.

low single supplements

10 Tips to Find Trips with No or Very Low Single Supplements

1. check our exclusive list of trips with no single supplements..

Hundreds of people use our  Deals page  every day. The trip offerings on it change frequently. If you're looking to travel to a specific part of the world, or for a particular type of travel, use our Searchable Trips page. Would you like to receive the list in your inbox so that you don't miss anything? Sign up for our Solo Travel Advisory .

2. Get clever with Google.

This is the most obvious tip yet many people don’t think of it. Simply Google “no single supplement” or “single supplement waived” plus your desired destination to see what’s out there.

You can also have Google monitor your search term for your desired trip. When you set up a Google Alert you’ll receive an email every time the phrase you’ve selected is published on the Internet. For example, if you want a trip to Ireland without a single supplement, here's what you can do.

  • Go to Google.com/alerts .
  • In the box at the top of the page set up an alert in this format: “single supplement waived” “Ireland”.
  • Click the “Show Options” box and set your options such as how often you want to receive email alerts.
  • Hit “Create Alert,” and you’re done. The number of no single supplement opportunities this will present will depend on the nature of your request.

3. Know how to search a website for no single supplements.

We encourage companies to have pages on their websites specifically for solo travelers. On these pages the company policy regarding solo travelers and the single supplement should be communicated clearly, followed, hopefully, by a listing of trips with no single supplement. To find these pages on a site, look for “Solo Travel” in the menu at the top of the site or enter “solo travel” in the search box that is usually at the top as well.

4. Know how to calculate the size of the supplement you may have to pay.

It may not be clear whether a trip has a single supplement. First, look to see if the price says “based on double occupancy” or has an asterisk beside it that links to the same statement. If so, you know there's a supplement but you don't know how much it is.

At this point I suggest that you go to the payment page before you read all the wonderful details about the trip. There will be a place where you indicate the number of people booking the trip. Calculate the cost of the trip twice, once for one person and once for two people.

Here's how you determine the single supplement rate. Divide the price for the single person by half the price of two people and you'll find the percentage of the supplement being charged. For example, if the price for one person is $1,200 and the price for two people is $2,000 then your simple equation would be: 1,200 ÷ 1,000 = 1.2. 1.2 equals 120% and indicates a 20% single supplement. Now that you know what the supplement is, you may be in a position to negotiate a better deal. Some sites will not provide accurate pricing information for solo travelers without forcing you to enter personal information, or requiring you to call them. If you find this frustrating, you can pick up the phone and use that toll-free number to let them know.

5. Book early or at the last minute.

Some companies will be more willing to negotiate on the supplement when they've just announced the trip (for a couple of spots) and also near the departure time to fill empty spaces. Booking very early or at the last minute can be your answer to a great deal.

6. Choose the shoulder season.

You're going to have more success finding trips with no single supplement when the tours are not as busy, the resorts not as full, and the ships not as booked. Try to plan your vacation at a time of year when fewer people are traveling.

7. Be bold and ask for the supplement to be waived.

Your success may depend on how soon the ship sails or how empty the resort is, but it’s always worth asking to have the single supplement waived. If you’re working with a travel agent, ask them to negotiate for you – perhaps they’ll have some leverage or inside knowledge that will help them be successful. If they’re not successful, go to the operator directly and try it yourself.

8. Fine-tune your timing.

Solo or not, flexibility is always a factor when looking for great deals. A day earlier or later can make a difference on a flight; a week sooner or later can make a difference on a cruise. Do your research and see just what that difference is. And, again, negotiate. Ask whether by changing your dates the company could waive the single supplement for you.

9. If you have to, accept a roommate.

Many people don’t like the idea of being paired with a stranger for a trip but I’ve heard many good reports and even that great friendships have resulted from this. After all, if you’re on the same trip you likely have something in common. Companies that do this will pair you up with someone of the same gender and, if they don’t have someone for you, they will usually waive the supplement. Read: Find a Travel Partner: Safe Options and Some to Avoid .

10. Find an offer you can’t refuse.

Find a deal so great that the single supplement isn’t really an issue. You may still have to pay a supplement, but if you find an extraordinary deal it won’t be quite so painful.

Solo Traveler's Work to End the Single Supplement

When I first started Solo Traveler, I was an independent solo traveler. It didn't occur to me that traveling with a group would be solo travel.

It didn't take me long to understand that it is and that there are times when group travel makes more sense than going independently. Then I learned about the single supplement. We have tackled the issue of the supplement ever since.

We started by producing a list of tours that we compiled from Google Alerts indicating that a supplement was waived. This was a very meagre list. Companies might waive the supplement for one tour or a few spots on one tour. It was not a common practice. Far less common than the 100% supplement.

Then we became proactive. We approached companies to sell them on the idea of waiving the supplement or, at least, reducing the supplement to a maximum of 20%. Slowly, we converted a few companies to our way of thinking and produced a more formal list on our Deals page and in the form of an email to our readership. That list has grown to offer a significant number of trips from a wide variety of tour and cruise companies.

Next, we started the Solo Travel Awards. This brought more attention to the issue and encouraged companies to up their game and lower the supplement more in hopes of winning an award. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put an end to that program.

Ah, but while on our “COVID Break”, we did some technical work so that our travelers could search trips offered by companies based on specific criteria. You can do so on the Searchable Trips page.

What's next in our campaign to deliver to you trips with no single supplement? Stay tuned! You can be sure that we are on the case. If you're not already on our mailing list, sign up now so you don't miss a thing.

How solo cruisers can avoid a single supplement

Learn the tricks to getting around single supplement fees on your next cruise.

If you go solo on a cruise, it might mean you pay almost double for your trip. Solo travelers thinking about taking a cruise might be surprised to learn that most cruise lines will charge a single supplement. This premium is charged to travelers who book a cabin for only one person.

The reasons behind this are simple: Cruise lines are counting on two people per cabin (at least) and they are prepared to charge a fee for those who want to occupy a stateroom solo. This means the cost of a single supplement can almost double the cruise fare.

While such a fee is waived on some cruise lines, it isn't often the norm. Single cruise supplements are at the discretion of the cruise line and in some cases, to promote bookings, cruise lines will waive the fee to generate sales. If a passenger is charged a single supplement, it is usually for the cruise fare only, not taxes or port charges on the second berth (bed) in the room.

Go for a solo stroll in the tropics on your Windstar cruise.

How cruise lines accommodate solo cruisers

The easiest way to skirt the single supplement is to find a studio cabin built for one guest. They're smaller, yes, but considerably less expensive. For example, a studio on a Norwegian ship might cost $1,099 compared to the cost of booking a double-occupancy room with a single supplement that sets you back $1,898.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been at the forefront of catering to solo travelers. Norwegian Bliss , which launches next month, and Norwegian Escape  both offer 82 studio staterooms. Norwegian Epic has the most studio cabins at sea, 128.  Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway  both offer 59 studio rooms. The studios are about 100 square feet and include entry to a common area, the Studio Lounge, which sports a bar, television screens and complimentary coffee and snacks.

Royal Caribbean also offers studio cabins, chiefly on its newest ships. Harmony of the Seas , the world's largest cruise ship, offers 15 studio interior or ocean-view staterooms that range from 96 to 104 square feet. Anthem of the Seas features 14 studio interior staterooms that measure 101 square feet and have virtual balconies . A slight upgrade scores you 119 square feet in one of a dozen Super Studios. Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas both offer 16 studios and 12 Super Studio Ocean View staterooms with balcony. And you'll find a handful of single rooms on the older Royal ships.

Holland America's new Koningsdam pampers its passengers in a dozen ocean-view cabins designed for singles. You’ll sleep on the line's signature Mariner's Dream beds — in a cloud of luxury — and enjoy great amenities like plush bathrobes and complimentary fruit baskets. The cabins are located together on the forward main deck of the ship and range from 127 to 172 square feet.

The classic ocean liner Queen Mary 2 from Cunard now has 15 ocean-view cabins for solo travelers.

Some of the smaller cruise lines also offer deals. Windstar Cruises recently reduced their single supplement to as little as 15 percent on some itineraries.

Share a cabin with another single

Match programs  are also a way to take the sting out of paying for a supplement , and are often arranged by tour companies such as Rick Steves' Europe and G Adventures . These programs help same-sex singles get paired up with roommates in order to lower costs.

One way to find a roommate for a cruise is to search for a hosted singles cruise . These special groups are put together by travel agencies or companies specializing in single cruises.

Booking a cruise far in advance can also help solo travelers avoid a single supplement. For example, Avalon Waterways offers discounted prices for those who book a cruise the year before they plan on traveling.
