Saudi Arabia has recently launched electronic visa services for seven countries, including India. The new system eliminates traditional visa stickers on passports and issues e-visas with QR codes.

The change, which came into effect on May 1, has been launched in the Kingdom’s missions in the United Arab Emirates , Jordan, Egypt, Bangladesh, India, Philippines and Indonesia, according to Al Arabiya .

All you need to know about the Saudi electronic visa

The development is a part of the ongoing efforts by the Saudi Kingdom to “automate procedures and boost the quality of consular services provided by the ministry”, as well as to develop the mechanism of issuing work, residency and travel visas.

Saudi Arabia has been working to revamp its visa procedures and rules in a bid to attract more travellers as well as foreign businesses. Along with this, there are also talks of having a unified Schengen-style visa for all the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, as per multiple reports.

With the new e-visa system, scanning of a QR code is all that will be needed to get the details of the visa holder. However, the visa information is also sent to registered e-mail IDs of applicants, which can be printed by them on an A4-sized sheet to show it as proof of having obtained the visa to Saudi Arabia.

The new system is part of Saudi’s Vision 2030, which talks about reform strategies and goals related to the long-term economic success of the Kingdom.

Apart from smoothening the application process, the digital initiative is also expected to remove the travel agent system that currently acts as an intermediary between the applicants and the visa application centres in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Visa to visit India - General Information

1. E-Visas :

(i) With effect from 17.06.2019 E-Visa facility has been extended to Saudi nationals also.

(ii) E-Visas are admissible only for the following categories - eTourist Visa, eBusiness Visa, eConference Visa, eMedical Visa and eMedical Attendent Visa.

(iii) Applicants may go to the link https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html and apply in 4 easy steps -

(a) Apply online and Upload photo and passport page,

(b) Pay eVisa fees online using credit / debit card /payment wallet,

(c) Receive Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online (ETA will be sent to the Email).

(d) Fly to India - Print ETA and present at Immigration Check Post where eVisa will be stamped on Passport.

(iv) Application and payment of fees is required to be made a minimum of 4 days in advance from the date of travel and wait for approval.

(v) Contact 24X7 Helpdesk at +91 11 24300666 (Tel) and indiatvoa[at]gov.in (E-mail) for assistance on eVisa process.

2. Regular/Paper Visas : The present system of obtaining regular/Paper visa continues to be available.The Embassy of India, Riyadh has outsourced the visa services (submission of visa applications and delivery of serviced passports) to M/s VFS GCC LLC. The outsourcing of consular services covers areas of Central and Eastern regions falling under the jurisdiction of Embassy of India, Riyadh and areas of Western, Northern and Southern regions falling under the jurisdiction of Consulate General of India, Jeddah.

For Regular/Paper Visa Services

1. Those intending to visit India may visit the website at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/indianVisaReg.jsp to fill up the application form online. 2. A print out of the filled in application form duly signed is required to be submitted along with fee, two recent passport size photographs, photocopy of ID card/Iqama, proof of confirmation of hotel accommodation, airlines booking and passport-valid for at least six months beyond the applicable visa period- be submitted at any of the Visa application centre of M/s VFS GCC LLC between 08.30 hrs to 15.00 hrs on all working days. (i.e. Sunday to Thursday). 3. (i) Visas applied at Jeddah and Riyadh will normally be issued on the 3rd working day except in cases which require detailed procedural formalities and clearances.

(ii) Visas applied at other centres may take a little longer.

(iii) In case of any difficulty the visa applicants may contact Attache(Visa) at visa[dot]riyadh[at]mea[dot]gov[dot]in or 011-4884144 Ext 205.

5. Capture of Biometrics is mandatory except for the following categories:

(i) Diplomatic and Official passport holders;

(ii) Senior citizens (above 70 years) and minors (below 12 years);

(iii) Those who have given their biometrics previously are exempted for 5 years. This is reflected in the online visa application form as exempted till dd/mm/yyyy.

Additional Information

1. Applicants visiting India are advised to abide by the law of the land and not to misuse status of their respective visa granted by the Mission. Indulgence in any unlawful or undesirable practice will be dealt with strictly.

2. Satellite telephones services are not permitted in India. Under the law, people including tourists found to be making unauthorised use of satellite telephone services will be prosecuted and all the sets found in possession of any individual will be seized.

3. Any person seeking a visa to India for purpose of entering into a surrogacy arrangement must ascertain beforehand whether the law of that country permits surrogacy and will provide appropriate travel documents to the child for accompanying the surrogate parents. Entering into surrogacy arrangement under any other visa not sought for surrogacy is punishable under the Indian law.

4. Foreign Nationals visiting India on a short visit or for tourist purposes are allowed to carry a maximum of Rs. 25000 in Indian currency of any denomination. It is also advised that such currency should be procured from authorized agents with receipt or other authorized sources only as instances of counterfeit currency have come to notice of the authorities. Travellers found in possession of such currencies may face prosecurition as per relevant provisions of the Indian law.

5.For foreigners who do not hold a valid resident permit for Saudi Arabia, a reference will be made to the Indian Mission in their country of residence and would require additional processing time and fee of SR.100 (Saudi Riyals One hundred).

7. Validity of the visa

(i) The period of valdity of visa begins from the date of issue of visa.

(ii) The Embassy reserves the right to refuse visa without assigning any reason.

(iii) Visa fee is charged regardless of whether visa is issued or not.

Saudi Arabia Opens E-Visa Access for Indian Passport Holders with UK, US, and Schengen Visas

In a significant move aimed at bolstering tourism, the Saudi Tourism Authority has announced that Indian passport holders possessing valid visas for the United Kingdom, the United States, or Schengen countries, which have been utilized at least once, are now eligible to apply for Saudi e-visas online .

This landmark decision was revealed by the President of the Saudi Tourism Authority (Asia Pacific) in an exclusive interview with the Times of India (TOI).

Simplified Entry with 96-Hour Stopover Visa and VFS Tasheel Offices

To enhance the ease of travel for prospective visitors, Saudi Arabia has introduced a 96-hour stopover visa, allowing travelers to briefly explore the country during layovers.

Additionally, to facilitate the visa application process, nine VFS Tasheel Visa offices have been established throughout India, providing secure and efficient administrative services to help kick-start the journey of experiencing Saudi Arabia.

India Emerges as a Key Market for Saudi Tourism

With its diverse attractions and cultural richness, Saudi Arabia has witnessed a surge in interest from Indian tourists. Notably, approximately one million Indian visitors venture to Saudi Arabia annually, making India one of the fastest-growing markets for the country.

• e-Visa has 5 sub-categories viz. e-Tourist Visa(for 30 days/01 year/ 05 years) ,e-Business Visa, e-Medical Visa, e-Medical Attendant Visa and e-Conference Visa. A foreigner (other than those applying for e-Conference Visa) will be allowed to club activities permitted under these categories. Foreigners applying for e-Conference visa will be permitted to club the activities permitted under e-Tourist visa only (validity co-terminus with e-Conference Visa only i.e. 30 days). Only two e-Medical Attendant Visas will be granted against one e- Medical Visa.
• For e-Tourist and e-Business visa, Applicants of the eligible countries/territories may apply online minimum 4 days in advance of the date of arrival.
• For e-Medical, e-Medical Attendant and e-Conference visa, Applicants of the eligible countries/territories may apply online minimum 4 days in advance of the date of arrival with a window of 120 days. • e-Visa fee is country/Territory specific. Bank transaction charges of 2.5% will be charged additionally on applicable e-Visa fees. The documents required for completing the eVisa application is indicated against each type of eVisa. Please keep all these documents ready at hand before beginning to fill your eVisa application. If an applicant is presented with a 3D Secure page prompting to enter a password/OTP, this means the Card issuing Bank participates in 3D Secure transaction. If the applicant’s transaction is processed without directing to 3D secure page, he/she should contact the card issuing Bank for support.

In an ideal scenario, once the transaction is processed, the applicant shall be presented with a payment successful page along with a reference number.

In some rare scenarios it may happen where the application is not shown Payment successful page post completion of transaction, which may be due to a drop in connectivity leading to non-receipt of success response. If the applicant does not receive any success message even after card account has been charged, a refund shall be initiated after due reconciliation process to the applicants’ card account.

In rare case of transaction status unknown to the applicant, which is when the applicant has not received success response due to time out or connectivity issue and the account has been debited, we advise the customer not to attempt another transaction immediately and rather provide their Order no. on the e-Visa site after 30 minutes to check the status of the transaction. If the transaction status is showing ‘failed’, then customer may attempt another transaction. Also, the debited amount shall be refunded to the applicants’ card account after reconciliation process within seven (7) days of transaction.

The banking charges for:

• Payment Gateway Card transactions (both Debit or Credit Card): 2.5%* of the applicable e-Visa fee.
• Paypal: 3.5%* of the applicable e-Visa fee.

N ew Delhi: Japan has officially rolled out its e-Visa program through Japan Visa Application centers managed by VFS Global for several countries, including India. This single-entry visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in Japan, tailored for air travelers with ordinary passports starting April 1.

Eligible countries

Eligible countries and regions for the eVisa include Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the USA. Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are also eligible.

All the people residing in these countries/regions, except those who are exempted from short-term visa, can apply.

Procedure to apply

• Verification of required visa and documents
• Enter the necessary information for the online visa application
• Receive the visa application results via email
• Pay the visa fees (from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025)

Transit visa: Rs 50

• VFS Service fee will be also charged.
• Receive the e-Visa after payment.

Display 'visa issuance notice'

• The new eVisa system requires travelers to show a digital "Visa issuance notice" on their mobile phones upon arrival at the airport, with internet access being essential for this step.
• Travel agency will provide a "Visa Issuance Notice" (printed or pdf data) with a two dimensional barcode.
• Scan the two dimensional barcode with your device and enter the required information to display the notice.
• By tapping “Display“, the electronic "visa issuance notice" appears and the countdown timer shown at the top right starts immediately. This countdown proves that the notice is valid.
• All other formats, such as PDFs, photos, screenshots, or printed copies, will not be accepted.

Important notes

• Japan eVisa is available only to those who travel to Japan by plane.
• During the application process, the applicant may be requested to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the place of the applicant’s residence for an interview.

Indian passport holders no longer need to carry a physical visa sticker to travel to Japan. From April 1, Japan began issuing eVisas to Indian travellers. The much-awaited Japan e-Visa programme allows anyone to apply for a visa electronically through Japan Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global. This programme allows visitors to enter Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.

Under the revised system, applicants must still submit their applications to the Visa Application Centres overseen by VFS Global, which is the same process as before. However, one notable change is in the way visas are issued. Instead of receiving traditional visa stickers affixed to their passports, successful applicants will now receive electronic visas. The e-Visa process requires travellers to present a 'visa issuance notice' on their mobile device upon arrival at the airport. It's important to note that internet access is required for this process. What are the eligibility criteria

Citizens and residents of the following countries and regions are eligible: Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, USA. Additionally, Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are also included in the eligibility criteria. Residents of these countries or regions, with exceptions for those exempt from short-term visas, can apply for an eVisa through the Japan e-Visa website.

How to apply

Here's a step-by-step guide to the application process:

Step 1: To initiate the application process, individuals should access the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre, managed by VFS Global, by visiting https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/.

Step 2: Choose the "Temporary Visitor Visa" option and review all visa requirements carefully. Download the application form, fill it out accurately, and print it. Ensure all fields are completed. Additionally, prepare photocopies of the required documents for the single-entry short-term tourism visa.

Step 3: Schedule an appointment to submit your application at the Visa Application Centre. Once booked, you'll receive a confirmation email for your appointment, which will include the letter of appointment.

Step 4: Submit your completed visa application form at the center during your appointment. Then, wait for an email notification informing you when your decision is ready for collection. You can track the progress of your visa application online using the reference number provided on your invoice or receipt. Approved applicants for the eVisa will receive an electronic visa instead of a physical visa sticker. However, travelers are required to show a "visa issuance notice" on their mobile devices upon arrival at the airport.

Step 5: At the airport check-in, display the "visa issuance notice" on your device. The travel agency will furnish a "Visa Issuance Notice" inclusive of a two-dimensional barcode. Tokyo: Japan has officially launched its e–visa program for several countries including India. This allows the visitors to stay in the country for up to ninety days with a single-entry visa. The e–visa program has been envisioned to benefit the passengers who possess a regular passport and wish to enter Japan via air. Besides Indian citizens, people from countries like Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States of America can utilize this service.

How to apply? The e–visa could be applied online via the official website . Make sure to upload the required documents at the time of application. Meanwhile, the visa status will be sent to your registered email ID. The visa fees too could be paid online. It must be noted that the e–visa would be granted only after the fee has been paid. Here is a complete list of the latest visa updates every Indian traveller should know.

1. japan’s e-visa:.

Japan has introduced an eVisa system for Indian travellers, making it easier and more convenient to visit the country. Starting in April, eligible Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India can apply for an eVisa for short-term tourism purposes through the application process operated by VFS Global. Now, instead of physical stickers in passports, visas will be issued electronically and would offer a single-entry option, allowing stays up to 90 days.

2. Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia’s Schengen visa:

Becoming the recent EU nations to join Europe’s Schengen travel area, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria have partially joined the Schengen area, expanding the scope of the Schengen visa  to include 29 countries across continental Europe. This means that Indian travellers can now obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, allowing stays of up to 90 days within 180 days.

3. Dubai’s five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa:

Dubai introduced a new visa program tailored to Indian travellers in February, which offers a five-year, multiple-entry option, allowing stays of up to 90 days in the country, with the possibility of a single extension not exceeding 180 days annually, for both business and leisure trips, with unlimited entries and exits within five years.

4. Thailand’s visa-free entry:

The Thai Government has introduced a temporary visa exemption for Indian passport holders, enabling them to enter Thailand without a tourist visa from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024, with an exemption granting a 30-day stay for tourism purposes.

5. Kenya to eliminate visa requirements:

Starting from January 1, 2024, Kenya has abolished visa requirements for Indian citizens and all international tourists, to boost its tourism industry. This decision aims to provide easier access to Kenya’s rich wildlife and beautiful beaches, encouraging more visitors to explore the country’s unique attractions.

In a big move, Japan has recently introduced electronic visas (e-Visa) for Indian tourists, especially for domestic tourism purposes. E-visa provides a short-term entry visa, allows you to stay in Japan for up to 90 days, ensures a hassle-free entry process and provides greater convenience for tourists to visit the country.

Japan e-Visa submission procedure

To apply for an e-visa Applicants can be contacted by VFS Must visit the website provided.

This application process includes downloading and filling out the visa application form, preparing copies of the required documents and making an appointment at the Visa Application Center.

After submitting the application form, applicants must wait for the visa procedures to be completed at the centre. An email will notify the date to expect your visa. 

Successful applicants will be issued an electronic visa that will replace the one in their passport.

However, those travelling as part of the visa must display the “Visa Notification” function on their mobile phone upon arrival at airport processing.
