hi i'm in the market right now for a safari and have received an offer from a seller for a '95 safari m/t 3.0d I just had several questions before buying 1. what should I look out for when I see the car engine wise and aesthetics wise. 2. hows the fuel economy? 3. hows the reliability? I'll second the rust. Rear slider window frames are often rusted. If it has the rear dickie seats, I recommend you pull the carpet back to look for rust around the seat mounts and the rear pan seam. The view of the mounts is blocked by a support and is not easy to see. Only found my two small rust holes because the carpet was damp in the back. Also agree on the IP seals -especially pre-1994. I believe it was in 1994 that they went to the viton type seals and hoses. However, i would check with Nissan to confirm this. My 1991 4.2 L usually gets around 10-11.5 liter per 100 kms. We are on winter diesel now so it is a tad worse than that now. Can't say much about the 3.0 because I have no experience with it. Is it the same 3.0 in the GUs? If so, I would be a bit concerned. I recommend you take it to a diesel mechanic before you lay out your cash and have them do a cold and hot compression test and a leak down test. Good luck.  

Rust, Rust and more Rust. Go over it with a fine tooth comb. Rust in the roof rails is common, doors etc and also around the windscreen seal. Check rear of engine bay/firewall seams for rust as well. If you see rust down the bottom of the B pillars, walk away as this can be terminal judging by around 5 safaris I viewed with the same rust issues. If the engine and gearbox sound OK, they probably are. Top end of the diesel could be noisey if the lifters havent been adjusted properly. Gearbox could make noise when cold at idle in neutral, synchros will probably be tight until its up to operating temp.  

thanks for the replies I went and saw a 95 3.0d everything looked good except for the usual wear in the inside. the engine sounded fine as it only had 89thou km on it. any other things i should look out for in terms of the engine? because the car is around 13 years old already just want to make sure before i lay out the cash  

How much was he asking ? I'm considering selling My 94 Safari Man TD42 soon, so I'm interested what they fetch these days. Jools

Never heard of a 1995 3.0d, sure its not a 2.8?????  

correction i saw the registration papers and its actually a 1994 model and this might be a stupid question but if the safari has 100thou plus miles on it how reliable is it? because i don't know if i can judge this car on miles since it has been relied upon y govt agencies u/n and such that the mileage may not matter.  

They're fairly bulletproof, but if you have the slightest doubts about its reliability, don't buy it. There'll be others.  

I got a 89'lwb safari 4.2td auto/ black/grey with only 69128km from parramatta rd SAFS IMPORTS for $15000 I had a state roads auto inspections done on it for $170, he went over it with a fine tooth comb, all good paint was good, no rust motor and G/B good tacho has probs carpet original like new brake peddle rubber not worn, tells alot interior very good **** radio, through that out exhaust was rusty, because japs put salt on icy roads, since replaced tyres new fitted a towbar fitted black widow immobilizer air filter looked like the original [filthy] it blew a gut load of black smoke and quite guttless up hills until I put DTS turbo and new injectors from Berrima Diesel, completely different truck now. most are 24v I get about 600ks to a 70L tank excelent for touring,and every day use plenty of room, even more than flat roofs BIG sunroof loves the rough stuff, sand, mud, rocks and highway top speed 170km [scary] BUT not all insurance companies will insure them My only problems were rusted exhaust blown Head/G, alternator A/C pulley bearing seezed GREAT TRUCK  

what kinda driving was this ? i'm looking at getting a swb as well and that fuel consumtion is better then my lil 1.8 carby subaru....2. My SWB 4.2 no turbo with a 3 inch lift and 33s MT and extractors gets 550-600klm out of 65L.  

I've got the SWB td42 auto and get between 9-11 km per litre depending on how I drive. I also found that a 20% biomix improves my economy by about 5% contrary to popular belief. Mine is an 89 model and I found rust in the rear windows like everyone else, I also found small pockets in places like under the bonnet above the fenders and also at the body join where the sill and fender meet, these didnt show up till about two years after I got the truck. My truck had 80,000km on the clock when I bought it and overall it looked like honest km, I found out a couple months after I got it that it had sustained some body damage back in japan, I found out when the bog job started to crack. Other problems were, stereo fubar, heavy truck batteries had been swiped somewhere along the line and switched for small car batteries that wouldn't have done the job very long. If you find these types of issues hit the dealer up for a fix included in the purchase price. Bob

Rare Rides: Patrol the Desert in This 1989 Nissan Safari

The Patrol has forever been Nissan’s answer to the Toyota Land Cruiser, as both brands compete for rough and tumble SUV customers. Today’s Rare Ride represents just how many creature comforts can be added to a go-anywhere truck.

Presenting the Nissan Safari from 1989.

The Patrol started production in 1951, aping the looks and function of the Willys Jeep. It borrowed the name too; sometimes it was just called a Jeep. Mostly intended for military use, the bare-bones first generation lasted through 1960.

With the debut of the second generation, production expanded to include more body styles: Patrol now offered hardtops, vans, and a pickup truck. Distribution expanded as well, and the Patrol was sold (as a Nissan) at Datsun dealerships in North America between 1962 and 1969.

It was 1980 before the third-generation Patrol began production, known as the 160 series. Comfort and equipment came into play for the first time, as this generation saw the introduction of an automatic transmission. Accompanying the transmission option were new trim levels. Deluxe examples included luxuries like air conditioning and power steering.

A fourth-generation (Y60) Patrol started production in 1987, bringing us to today’s Rare Ride. In a turn from prior generations, a coil suspension replaced the old leaf springs and brought refinement to travel. Power steering was standard and, if buyers spent enough money, they’d have the benefit of front and rear disc brakes. Automatic transmissions in this generation were all of the four-speed variety, while manuals had five forward gears. Engines ranged between 2.8 and 4.2 liters, all of them inline-sixes.

The Japanese market received the fourth-generation Patrol as the Safari. While models for other markets had a 12-volt electrical system, the Safari had a 24-volt. Today’s Rare Ride is a decked-out short-wheelbase example from the end of the Eighties. It has the largest 4.2-liter diesel engine. Said diesel propels all the tape stripes, power equipment, and tweedy seats through an automatic transmission. The Safari asks $14,900 and is located in Philadelphia.

One of the carriers around here has a JDM Mitsubishi Pajero for that.

@bumpy ii I've been tempted to become a mail carrier just so I can justify buying some quirky RHD Japanese metal. But, in reality, $14k+ is a bit much for an older vehicle that will see daily service and may quite possibly be near impossible to find parts for. Yeah, a new RHD Wrangler is twice that easy, but it has a warranty and service/parts availability virtually anywhere on this continent.

Does it still have the 24V electrical system? While such things have merits for reliability reasons, maintainability would take a huge hit unless you have military-like economies of scale. What do you use for lightbulbs, for instance?

If i were to guess, it's only a partial 24v for the starting and charging circuits, and the cluster and other electrical accessories are 12v. Some older diesel tractors were set up that way.

That's the price for an OEM Mitsubishi SST. Wow. It's obvious from reading everything the seller has done, he has put a lot of time, energy, and love into this car, but it's understandable that $17,000 before labor, tax, and fees is a bridge too far. And no one wants to see this car end up in a junkyard. The last excellent Mitsubishi before telling Subaru that they give up. And the rear facing car seat in the back - it's not every day you see that in an Evo! Get the kid to daycare in record time! Comments are reading that the price is best offer. It's been a while since Tim put something up that had me really thinking about it, even something over 1,000 miles away. But I've loved the Evo for a long time... And if you're going to scratch out the front plate image, you might want to do the rear one as well!
